Sometimes you just don’t know which restaurants have the best menu selection, where to find that cool mural you saw on Instagram or which brewery is pouring exactly the style of beer you love. Other times you’re looking for a high-flying adventure or a cruise around Lake Tahoe. Fuel your ambition with any of these good-times-guaranteed Reno and Lake Tahoe tours. In addition to the list below, be sure to check out Reno Tahoe tour operators that can accommodate larger groups.

Reno Brew Bike

Want to ride around with a group of friends on a bicycle bar, combining a bar crawl and a (low-key) cardio session? Enter the Reno Brew Bike . On this Reno tour, you’ll earn your beer through the collaborative pedaling of a bar-top trolley. Cruise around some of the best-tasting establishments in Reno, sampling brews and bites along the way.

MidTown Mural Tours

Reno is a community that loves their arts, and we have more than 120 murals in MidTown and downtown painted by local, national and international artists to prove it. If you’re an art junkie, MidTown Mural Tours is a great way to experience the heart and soul of the Biggest Little City. Take your time, adventure down alleys and don’t forget to bring your camera on this self-guided tour of Reno’s artistic side.

Reno Food Tours

Get to know the culinary side of Reno’s vibrant downtown and hip MidTown districts with these tasty food tours. Reno Food Tours offers different tour options throughout the year. You can experience the taste of downtown with the Downtown Tour, or you can embrace Reno’s MidTown District and art culture with the MidTown and Murals Tour. If you have a large group, private tours are available.

Virginia City and Carson City Tours

Sierra comstock tours.

Sierra Comstock Tours offers narrated tours to two of Reno Tahoe’s most iconic spots, Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. Their Virginia City and Lake Tahoe tour departs from local hotels year-round. The tour itself lasts seven hours and features a two-hour exploration of Virginia City and a tour of Lake Tahoe. Although it is a driving tour, there are plenty of chances to get out and take in the sights. It can be difficult to see everything in Reno Tahoe, and this tour is a great way to cover some ground.

Virginia & Truckee Railroad Tour

There is no better way to take in the beauty of Carson Valley than the V&T Railway. In its heyday, this historic railroad, which dates back to 1868, successfully operated 30-45 trains daily on the 55-mile railroad to support the booming mining industry.

The V&T is no longer a working train route, but since renovations in the early 2000s, it has become a historic tourist attraction. Offering a 24-mile round trip tour from Carson City to Virginia City, the Virginia & Truckee Railroad Tour is a fully-narrated journey on a 1916 Baldwin locomotive, taking you through a scenic route of tunnels, canyons and mining towns.

Bats in the Belfry Tour

A unique Virginia City experience, the Bats in the Belfry Tour takes brave visitors through the city’s most haunted locations, throughout which costumed tour guides tell chilling historical and paranormal stories of the Silver Queen Hotel, Mackay Mansion, the Washoe Club and more.

Kit Carson Trail

Experience the rich history of Nevada’s capital on along the Kit Carson Trail . This self-guided tour includes stops at Nevada’s first brewery – Carson Brewing Company – as well as the State Capital Building, the Governor’s Mansion and many other historic points of interest. Be on the lookout for ghostly happenings as many of the locations are reportedly haunted!

Lake Tahoe Tours

Action water sports.

Action Water Sports , located in Incline Village, offers historic Lake Tahoe tours, with an adventurous twist. Get a birds-eye view of Lake Tahoe with their parasailing tour, sail around the lake on the Sierra Cloud Catamaran or race across the water in a formula yacht charter. If you’d rather customize your experience, they offer comprehensive boat and watercraft rentals, including boats, jet skis, kayaks and paddleboards.

Thunderbird Lodge

The historic Thunderbird Lodge offers tours of the estate, as well as tours of Lake Tahoe aboard the Thunderbird Yacht. Built in 1936, the lodge has a lighthouse room, servants’ quarters, gaming room and a 600-foot underground tunnel that leads to the boathouse, where the Thunderbird Yacht, the most valuable wooden yacht in the world, is housed.

If you are up for a day of adventure, check out the Tahoe Adventure Company Paddle tour . This kayaking trip will start you at Sand Harbor State Park, where you will paddle an easy 1.5 miles along Lake Tahoe’s magnificent shoreline ending at the Thunderbird Lodge. This tour includes lunch on the beach and a fully guided tour through the Whittell estate.

Tahoe Gal – North Tahoe Cruises

Cruise around Lake Tahoe on this historic, 120-passenger paddle wheeler. The Tahoe Gal departs daily from Tahoe City, and takes guests to sites like Ehrman Mansion and Vikingsholm Castle. This is a great opportunity to experience the lake while also learning about the unique history of the area.

M.S. Dixie – Zephyr Cove Resort

This all-season resort has a tour for everyone, including one of their most popular tours aboard the M.S. Dixie , which departs from Zephyr Cove and cruises to beautiful Emerald Bay.

Eastern Sierra Tour

The highest, lowest, hottest, oldest, wildest 555 miles in america.

The Eastern Sierra of California has long been an iconic destination. From the indigenous Paiute people to early gold miners of Bodie, this area has attracted and enchanted wanderers and wonderers of all types. This larger-than-life landscape of deserts and mountains, alpine forests and spectacular waterfalls, ranks as one of the most photographed regions in the USA. A land of natural extremes, the Eastern Sierra also holds historical and cultural treasures, with human tales as high and low as its altitudes. Now, for those ready to go the distance, there is a route that will take you to the furthest extremes of this spectacular part of America. Check it out as a Road Map with Images >>

WELCOME TO THE EASTERN SIERRA TOUR (E.S.T.)

The Highest, Lowest, Hottest, Oldest, Saltiest, Rockiest, Earliest, Purest, Strangest, Loneliest and Wildest 555-Mile Road Trip in America.

ArcGIS Guided Story Maps to take you in, around and through the Eastern Sierra.

DEATH VALLEY – America’s Hottest, Driest and Lowest National Park

Whether you begin or end here, the extreme nature of this massive desert basin must be experienced to be believed. See one of the largest saltpans on Earth with scenery that would look at home on a desert planet from Star Wars. Yet, despite its name, this area hosts a diversity of life, from lush oases to vast fields of wildflowers that appear after one of its rare rainstorms. You could also add another ‘-’ to its title, as the Largest National Park in the Lower 48. Open: Year-round

Traveler Tip: Temperatures can exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit here in the summer. Bring extra water and plan for extreme heat.

WHITNEY — The Highest Peak in the Contiguous US

With spires that rise like dragon’s teeth from the horizon, reaching 14,505 feet, Mt. Whitney looks as unassailable as a medieval fortress. Yet the Whitney Portal Road welcomes you, with views that make it one of the most scenic drives in California. For dedicated mountaineers, there is more than one route to the summit of Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. (The route from Whitney Portal is a little under 22 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 6,134 feet). More casual road-trippers may just want to stop for pancakes at the Whitney Portal Store and Café — no doubt, some of the fluffiest (open in the summer). Open: June-October depending on snow pack and weather conditions.

Traveler Tip: Whitney Portal Road closes in winter due to snow. You can see Mt. Whitney year-round from the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center located at the junction of Hwy US 395 and State Route 136 just south of Lone Pine. A permit is required to hike Mt. Whitney.

ALABAMA HILLS — The Wildest West

If you’ve watched any old western movies, you may have already seen some of the Alabama Hills. This National Scenic Area is home to rounded rock formations, tawny Sierra hills, and hundreds of natural stone arches. The Alabama Hills are a natural playground for hikers, climbers, landscape photographers, plein air painters and nature lovers. Open: Year-round

Traveler Tip: Stop by the Museum of Western Film History located in the town of Lone Pine to see artifacts from the many movies filmed here over the years.

MANZANAR NATIONAL HISTORIC PARK — The Truest View

If this road trip feels remote to you today, imagine how it must have felt for Japanese families relocated here in 1942. The Manzanar War Relocation Center was one of ten camps at which Japanese American citizens and resident Japanese aliens were incarcerated during World War II. Located between the towns of Lone Pine and Independence, Manzanar is one of the best preserved of these camps. Open: Year-round

Traveler Tip: You can explore the site on foot or reserve a free ranger-led program for your group’s visit (subject to availability).

ANCIENT BRISTLECONE PINE FOREST — The Oldest Living Thing

Bristlecone pines grow in the poorest soils and harshest environments, reaching out to the sky from rocky bluffs and outcrops just below the tree line. Some of these gnarled and twisted trees are over 4,700 years old—making them the oldest living things on the planet. Trails from the Visitor Center at Schulman Grove lead you past specimens of varying age and size, with views overlooking the Owens Valley. Open: Typically late April to late October, depending on snow and weather conditions.

Traveler Tip: Beyond Schulman Grove is Patriarch Grove— home of the world’s largest Bristlecone Pine, the Patriarch Tree.

Phone: 760-873-2500 Website: Fs.usda.gov/

PAIUTE SHOSHONE CULTURAL CENTER — The Earliest Communities

The Owens Valley is home to cultures as old as the Bristlecone pines. A museum and cultural center that serves the community and safeguards its history, Owens Valley Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center offers insights into the Nuumu (Paiute) and Newe (Shoshone) nations that originally inhabited the area. These beautiful grounds offer a quiet break from the road, where traditions of the past meet a shared vision for the future of this land and the community. Open: Year-round

Traveler Tip: Check their website for seasonal events happening monthly in collaboration with local tribes.

DEVILS POSTPILE NATIONAL MONUMENT — The Strangest Structures

Tens of thousands of years ago, a thick flow of lava slowed and cooled, contracting into 6-sided columns. Devils Postpile is one of the best examples of these natural basalt columns in the world, some reaching as high as 60 feet. Besides these eerie natural stone towers, the Devils Postpile National Monument offers varied opportunities for recreation, from hiking to horseback riding and sightseeing to wildlife viewing, over its 800-acre site. Open: May-October

Traveler Tip: A mandatory shuttle bus into Reds Meadow/Devils Postpile leaves Mammoth Mountain Main Lodge continuously throughout the day. $15 for adults, $7 for children aged 3-15, and free for children under age 2.

Phone: 760-934-2289 Website: nps.gov/depo

MONO LAKE — The Saltiest Swim

The largest natural lake in California, Mono Lake is an amazing 2.5 times saltier than the ocean and is one of the western hemisphere’s oldest lakes. Mono Lake is one of the most studied— and photographed—bird sanctuaries in North America and is also a beautiful ever-changing oasis of light and color. Photographers love its jagged snow-capped mountain reflections and the eerie spires, with the best displays located at the South Tufa Reserve. Open: Year-round

Traveler Tip: Drop by one of the two visitor information centers in Lee Vining and find out how Mono Lake’s mystical-looking limestone tufa towers are formed and how the lake was saved.

BODIE STATE HISTORIC PARK — The Loneliest Town

Turn off a long, quiet stretch of historic Highway 395, get out of your car and get ready to step right into the past. In 1880, the town of Bodie was home to some 10,000 miners, store owners, gunfighters, robbers and people from every part of the world. Now it’s a ghost town of weathered buildings, rust and faded dreams. The California State Park System that manages this property has chosen to leave the buildings in their natural state of deterioration rather than restore them. Yet, Bodie impressively well preserved. You can book ghost walks and tours, or just spend hours wandering its streets, peering in windows and listening for the past.  Open: Bodie is open year-round, however vehicle access on Hwy 270 into the park is open April-November, depending on weather and snow conditions.

Traveler Tip: Daily tours of the Stamp Mill may be offered for a small fee per person. Visit the Museum for current information and to register.

Phone: 760-616-5040 Website: Parks.ca.gov/?page_id=509

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK — The Grandest Landscape

For centuries, people have tried to put into words the majesty that is Yosemite. From epic spring waterfalls to towering granite icons like El Capitan and Half Dome, the whole vista seems designed to make humans feel small. Beyond Yosemite Valley itself, the Park offers wide-open lakes, peaceful alpine meadows, giant sequoia groves, and much more. Whether you start or finish your Eastern Sierra Tour here, you’ll remember it for a lifetime. Open: Tioga Pass Hwy 120 (the east entrance) is open May-November depending on snow and weather conditions. Yosemite National Park is open year-round.

Traveler Tip: Plan to arrive early! Parking and traffic can be an issue in Yosemite Valley during the summer months. Plan to arrive at your destinations before 9 am. Better yet, take a YARTS tour-style bus into Yosemite without a worry about traffic or parking. Purchase advance tickets at YARTS.com .

Knott's berry farm, knott's berry farm | knott’s berry farm announces opening date for camp snoopy makeover, the reimagined peanuts-themed kiddie land officially debuts on june 27 at the buena park theme park..

sierra bus tours

The reimagined Camp Snoopy will officially open on June 27 at the Buena Park theme park after blowing past a Memorial Day Weekend debut that was postponed due to construction delays.

ALSO SEE: Knott’s Berry Farm cracks down on line jumping: What you need to know

The Camp Snoopy makeover will add a new family coaster and super-sized kids swing, update an off-road rally race and miniature train ride while removing two original attractions from the themed land that opened in 1983.

The last major Camp Snoopy overhaul took place in 2014 for the 30th anniversary of the kiddie land when Knott’s added Charlie Brown’s Kite Flyer, Pig Pen’s Mud Buggies and Linus Launcher – all from Italy-based ridemaker Zamperla.

It’s always possible that a few of the new and refreshed rides could soft open before the official return of the land.

The four new and refreshed attractions will be ready when Camp Snoopy finally returns this summer.

Snoopy’s Tenderpaw Twister Coaster

The new Snoopy’s Tenderpaw Twister Coaster will take the place of the 1983 Timberline Twister roller coaster and the 1992 Camp Bus flying carpet ride.

The Tenderpaw family coaster will take riders on an off-road adventure with Snoopy in his Beagle Scout uniform at the wheel of a jeep-like vehicle. During each ride, the launched coaster will travel twice around the twin helix track.

The new Zamperla family coaster will be similar to the Daddy Pig’s coaster at the Peppa Pig mini-park at Legoland Florida.

Sally’s Swing Along

The new Sally’s Swing Along will replace the 1983 High Sierra Ferris Wheel that offers birds-eye views of Camp Snoopy, La Palma Avenue and the Claim Jumper restaurant just outside the park.

The two-sided backyard swing set will sweep young riders 10 feet in the air as they sway back and forth on a bench seat.

The Zamperla Happy Swing will be themed around Charlie Brown’s younger sister, Sally, and feature a playlist of songs she longs to sing to her long-time unrequited crush, Linus.

Camp Snoopy’s Off Road Rally

Camp Snoopy’s Off Road Rally will revamp the Rocky Mountain Trucking Company road rally ride – transforming the big rig trucks into four-wheel jeeps.

The new backstory for the ride will be a celebration of the annual Camp Jamboree with humorous checkpoints along the route marked by Woodstock sculptures.

Each of the jeeps will be themed to an individual Peanuts character – including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, Franklin, Sally, Pigpen and Peppermint Patty.

ALSO SEE: Knott’s Berry Farm never runs out of ways to use boysenberry

Beagle Express

The Grand Sierra Railroad will be rethemed as the Beagle Express, with a new electric locomotive replacing the steam engine.

Show scenes along the miniature train route will reflect the Camp Jamboree theme – with Charlie Brown participating in a sack race with a sack over his head and Beagle Scouts earning their horticulture badge by tending to the boysenberry vines.

With a little help from Woodstock, the Beagle Scouts will wrap Lucy in bandages from head to toe like a mummy.

Camp Snoopy Theater

The Camp Snoopy Theater will not be opening this summer. A reopening date for the outdoor theater has not yet been announced.

The Camp Snoopy Theater will be reoriented with the relocated stage facing the midway and a shade cover over new log-style seating.

During the theater closure, Peanuts fans will still be able to take photos with Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Pigpen and Peppermint Patty.

The first extensive makeover of Camp Snoopy in a decade removed several rides from the 1983 birth of the themed land; originally, it was a High Sierras camping experience unrelated to Peanuts.

The Timberline Twister roller coaster, High Sierra Ferris Wheel and Camp Bus magic carpet ride were removed as part of the makeover while Woodstock’s Airmail kiddie drop tower will be relocated.

The Timberline Twister was the first roller coaster experience for generations of Knott’s riders during the past four decades. The 1983 Bradley and Kaye Little Dipper climbed to a height of 30 feet before taking riders on a twisting and dipping course over 480 feet of track, according to Roller Coaster Database. Each ride came to end with the help of a manual hand brake.

Sierra Ferrell Knows How to Put On a Show

By Sam Reed

Image may contain Photography Body Part Finger Hand Person Skin Tattoo Face Head Portrait Clothing and Costume

Sierra Ferrell wears a stiff white wig that’s part beehive, part Marie Antoinette costume piece, and a ball gown befitting a Southern belle, its hoop skirt cascading in yards of glossy ruched fabric. Tiers of ruffles flutter at her elbows, and a corseted bodice erupts into a bouquet of rich red roses that decorate the bust.

The 35-year-old stands before a sold-out crowd at Webster Hall in Manhattan, her guitar—tattooed with peonies and double-headed snakes—slung over her shoulder. She’s branded the instrument with her name, which is spelled out in mother-of-pearl letters along the guitar’s neck. “Sierra Ferrell” shimmers in the pink, purple, and orange stage lights.

Sierra Ferrell

Sierra Ferrell on stage at Webster Hall on May 16

The resulting image of the singer-songwriter, who has been praised as much for her authentic showmanship as her “spellbinding and time-bending” voice, is something like Gone With the Wind on an acid trip.

If you were expecting the stripped-back image of a ’60s folk singer, à la Joni Mitchell, or the jeans-and-a cowboy-hat mold of a country star, Ferrell’s over-the-top display is a shock to the system. But then, Ferrell has never fit easily into a box.

Her twang is undeniable, as is her liberal use of fiddles and other Americana-tinged instruments, such as the upright bass or steel guitar. But to call her simply a country artist is to sell her short. Ferrell’s music is peppered with references to genres far and wide, from Spanish flamenco to New Orleans jazz to techno. She’s been categorized as indie folk, Americana, and simply roots, and more creatively as psychedelic bluegrass or Appalachian gothic. I first came across her catalog via Spotify’s Modern Eclectic playlist, which is just vague enough to be wholly accurate.

The musician, who landed in Nashville by way of West Virginia around five years ago, has her own descriptor for her music: “the life-changing kind.” And in the context of her own life, it certainly is.

Her surreal story sounds as though it was written by a heavy-handed Mark Twain disciple: She was born and raised in West Virginia at the onset of the opioid epidemic, eventually making her way to Nashville after a nomadic youth spent freighthopping, busking, and battling addiction.

Since getting clean and settling in one place, she’s become a music-industry darling: She has played the Grand Ole Opry, collaborated with artists as diverse as Ray LaMontagne and Diplo, been covered by Kelly Clarkson, and been featured on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Sierra Ferrell performs at Webster Hall on May 16

In the process, as she proudly tells me over the phone one May afternoon, she also acquired dental insurance.

“I can go to the dentist and afford dental care,” she enthuses as she talks about life then versus now. “I can afford health care. I’ve bought a house—that’s huge. Nothing big and fancy, I don’t really need much. Honestly, all of us, we don’t really need much.” For all her success, Ferrell remains steadfastly and humbly herself.

Back in March she released Trail of Flowers, her second studio album with Rounder Records following her 2021 debut, Long Time Coming. Both were met with rave reviews from critics and fans alike. As she tours the country—this time on a bus rather than in the back of a rail car—Ferrell spoke to Glamour about her over-the-top aesthetic, her blooming career, and being a “carney at heart.”

Glamour : You’ve got a busy summer ahead with the tour. How are you preparing for everything?

Sierra Ferrell: I’m just ironing out all the wrinkles of things; it’s like you fix a couple problems, you get a couple new ones. I’m also figuring out how to spend my time, and thinking, What can I do to recharge myself? What can I do to help with my mental health? I do a lot sauna-ing, I like to float, and I do a lot of praying. I think that’s really beneficial.

Did you say float?

Yeah, it’s like a float tank.

Like a sensory deprivation tank?

Yeah. It’s really important for people to take time to recharge and remember who they are, because it’s so easy to get wrapped up [in everything] mentally.

What does a typical day on the road look like? What do you do to get ready and then how do you wind down after?

I try not to party too much the night before, but most of the time I’ve been doing pretty well, actually not really drinking that much. Drinking can really just throw a wrench in the tire, especially getting older; we can’t really drink like we used to. Our bodies just don’t want to hang as much.

Today I went to the sauna, and afterward I sat in this salt room and just meditated for a bit. I’m always looking for a place to sauna and do a cold plunge, or any sort of healing thing. I did this thing where I was laid on a water bed and there were these vibrations that came through the waterbed. And then you put your headphones on and you listen to these frequencies.

That sounds amazing.

I know. I’ve only found one of them, but I really like that. I felt like it enhanced my brain. I kept getting goosebumps, and I’m like, This is what I need to be doing.

So it's kind of like a sound bath, but instead of the gongs and stuff, it's these frequencies in your headphones?

And you’re laying on this waterbed, and then they send these same frequencies through the waterbed.

I have to try that. I also wanted to also talk to you about your tour looks and how you’ve prepared what you’re going to wear. You’ve got such amazing style.

I've always been super into fashion, I just love it. I mean, it's as simple as putting on a dress that makes you feel good for a bit more confidence. Any little thing like that to help. In today’s society, we tend to be hard on ourselves based on what we think is the right image, which is different for everybody.

As I’ve been progressing further in my career of doing music and I’m starting to get some cash flow, I can really invest in nice, timeless pieces or get something made original that’s a one-of-a-kind sort of dress or outfit. Recently I’ve been collaborating with some friends. It’s good to spice it up because I like to keep things exciting, and I trust that my friends have really good taste, and of course if I don’t like it I’m going to say no. But it’s always fun to see what they’re going to come up with.

I loved what you wore on Jimmy Kimmel too. It was a bit theatrical, and it felt like the audience was immediately immersed in Sierra’s World. Can you tell me about that look and how it came together?

That look was sort of like a woodland fairy, just a creature of the mountains. That’s what we were going for with that. I worked with this woman, she’s got this company called Fables by Barrie.

And I love the glam, too, with your hair and big braids and makeup. Do you have a makeup artist or a glam team that you’re taking with you on tour helping you out with everything?

Yeah, I’ve had a rotating cast of really amazing folks that’ve come out on the road with me. They have really great ideas, and of course I’m always going to say no if I don’t like it. It’s just like I said, it’s so fun to have different approaches and different eyes to help you.

It’s also fun to keep the show visual—I want you to have all these senses piqued. I want to have a show where people can taste something. I guess they’re drinking normally, so they’re tasting that, but I want to maybe come up with something else where there’s something that you can touch. They’re already listening, they’re already watching—and that’s the cool part of about the fashion moment, they’re watching it. The more senses I feel that you can interact with, the closer bond that you can create with the audience.

So you want to overload everybody’s senses, all five, and then you’ll go float and you remove all of them.

You’ve also done shows that incorporate circus themes. Is that something that you’ve always been drawn to?

I’ve always been a carney at heart. I love the circus. I always wanted to run away with the circus when I was a kid.

The fact that you were train hopping, that you wanted to join the circus—it feels very much as if you came out of a different century. Do you feel that way?

I definitely feel that way.

Can we expect any circus elements as you continue the tour?

I mean, I feel like there are always going to be some sort of circus-y, quirky aspects to my show because that’s just who I am.

What are your inspirations—keeping it in the aesthetic area for a minute—for what you’re going to wear?

I pull from a lot of different eras and a lot of different centuries. I definitely always pull from what speaks to me. I just like a little bit of everything with a twist. Like Victorian things—I love corsets and that snatched waist, sort of corset-y type vibe, that shape.

Where do you draw your inspiration from musically? I was reading that you’re currently working on what’s next. What's on your mood board?

I really love surf rock music, so I want to start doing surf-rock-sounding energy and vibes. I love big band sounds, like Frank Sinatra vibes, and I do like some pop music too. I think whenever things are good and you like it, it’s good. You don’t necessarily need to have a name, which is something that we have to remind ourselves sometimes. There are so many different things in one. In a way, I just want to do it all.

I guess you’re under the Americana and folk umbrella, but I saw somebody call you psych bluegrass, and someone else just said country, but you also have jazz influences. Do you have a term that you prefer for how you see yourself as an artist?

I always try to say my music is the life-changing kind. What I want to do is inspire people to explore different genres of music because it’s so easy to regurgitate things that are put right in front of us.

People just get so busy—they’re waking up early, going to work, and they're listening to the radio. People are so used to just turning on a radio station and listening to what they’re playing. And so I feel like in a lot of places, especially rural areas, they’re missing aspects of culture from all over the world. I hope that my music entices people to explore other cultures and explore different sounds instead of just staying in one area, which is totally fine to do that, too, but I want to help encourage people to explore.

Totally. I read that you’ve taken up rapping. Is that true?

Oh my gosh! I mean, I’ve always joked that I want to be a rapper, and I think it’s fun. I could see myself in a rap song, doing the hook or something. I don’t want to rule it out. But I’ve got to put my time in.

So surf rock next, then your debut rap album after that.

You’ve written songs for other artists—do you prefer writing for yourself or collaborating?

Of course I’m a huge fan of other people’s music. Sometimes when I listen to myself it’s pretty annoying, like I don’t want to do this to other people. [ Laughs. ] I like trying to work with as many people as possible. At a younger age I was probably a little bit more ego, but now I’m just like, whatever. Let’s go.

Is there anybody you’d love to work with that you haven’t yet?

I want to work with Hozier .

I only just learned he’s like eight feet tall and Irish.

That’s what makes me love him even more!

What’s the biggest change in your life over the last five years?

Well, I can go to the dentist. I can afford health care. I’ve bought a house, that’s huge. Nothing big and fancy. I don’t really need much. Honestly, all of us—we don’t really need much.

It’s just this cute little house, and I’ve got my flowers, I’ve got my ideas of gardening, but I’m too gone right now for it.

I know why I’m going [forward in my career], honestly, but I sometimes forget why I’m still going. But then I remember. I feel like I’ve taken a position as a healer in some sort of way, not in the way of therapy where you go talk to someone, but it’s more therapy where you’re listening to music and you kind of heal in a way through song. I do that with other people’s music all the time.

I’m doing a lot of work on myself. I’ve got a lot of healing to do. I’m on the right path. I’m aware of what is wrong in a lot of ways, but not always aware or even know exactly how, to rewire the brain to make you feel lighter. I’m pretty tortured in a lot of ways, but like I said, I’m on the right journey of healing and I’m doing a lot of my work. It’s kind of funny to me because I myself am a healer, but as this person who is helping so many people, I myself still have a lot of healing to do.

So you bought this house. Is that going to be long-term home base, you think? Nashville?

For now. I kind of want to move to Spain and learn Spanish and eat tacos forever.

As a southern California native I would also recommend Mexico for tacos.

I love Mexico, dude. I was just there. I feel like I have a deep connection. I’ve got some Iberian blood, and a lot of times when I talk about Spain I get goosebumps and I’m like, I need to go. I feel like my ancestors are just…

Calling to you?

Yeah, they’re calling for me. I wish I knew more about my lineage—like where my ancestors hung out, ya know?

I think that our DNA is a blueprint. We might not know why we’re scared of something, but then maybe our great-great-great-grandfather was scared of something. Now you have this fear and you don’t know why you have it, and it’s because it’s been passed down through the coding of your DNA.

Have you done a DNA test?

Yeah, I’ve done one. I don’t really know how much I believe it, but I think it’s really cool. And what showed up, some of it made a lot of sense to me about why I’m drawn to certain styles of music, or why I feel a certain way. I definitely feel like we have more of a connection in that realm than what we’re aware of or told or talk about much.

Tell me about the beginning of your career and growing up in West Virginia.

Well, I’ve always been a singer. I’ve always loved singing. It’s just something that was in me. It’s something that I feel like maybe even my ancestors did it, and it’s something that feels natural on me.

It was definitely a journey because, believe it or not, for how flamboyant I’m, I’m a pretty shy person. I feel like I’ve definitely broken barriers in that sense where it’s not as bad, it’s easier for me from where I’m doing it a little longer. I’ve been chipping away at that.

Did you take vocal lessons as a kid? Your voice is amazing.

I’ll say that music programs in schools are so important, and that’s what honestly kind of helped me dial in a lot of my sound and find my voice. Just getting to speak freely, admire people…that is so powerful and beautiful.

“American Dreaming” is one of my favorite songs off your album. It feels almost like an anthem. What was going on in your mind when you wrote that song? Where were you at mentally?

I was doing a lot of touring then, and I was working a lot. So I was not in a really good place because I wasn’t paying attention to my body. I wasn’t listening to my body; I wasn’t listening to my mental health. And if you don’t listen to your body whenever it’s speaking to you and it’s telling you, “Hey, slow down,” it will make you slow down.

So it was just me teetering between mental breakdowns and playing shows, giving, giving, giving, giving, giving. I just wasn’t refilling my cup. I was probably drinking too much. I will say, it’s a tough thing to do because when you’re out here, it’s like, you’re a party maker.

So it’s, Well, I’ll just have a couple drinks or whatever. And then before you know it, you’re drinking a lot. It’s not really an issue for me these days, but it’s easy to fall back in that routine. And it’s not good. It’s not healthy. We’re all on our own journeys, and we all find these things out at different times, at different periods.

What has been the most exciting moment of your career so far?

The most exciting moment is the enthusiasm from all these amazing artists, these amazing talented musicians that I get to work with, just how enthusiastic they are to work with me. I think that’s really special because it is hard to find people that you can stick with and make something magic. I feel like I’ve been finding my people, and it’s been a fun ride.

President Biden

Fuel economy, biden finalizes another softened fuel economy rule, still saves us billions.

Avatar for Jameson Dow

The Department of Transportation has finalized its newest Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, requiring an increase in fuel economy that will reduce pollution and save Americans $23 billion in fuel costs. But like other recently adopted standards, they are nevertheless softer than the administration had originally sought.

The new CAFE standards cover model years 2027-2031 and target a fuel economy increase of 2% per year, bringing average fuel economy for light duty vehicles up to 50.4 miles per gallon in 2031. The increases are larger for heavy duty pickups and vans, with 10% increases from 2030-2032 and 8% from 2033-2035, targeting 35mpg average for these vehicles by 2035.

The DoT says the new rule will save car and truck owners $600-700 over the lifetime of their vehicles, and save the country $23 billion in fuel costs total. They will reduce carbon emissions by 710 million tons and save 70 billion gallons of gas by 2050.

Nevertheless, these rules are much softer than the administration had originally proposed, as the proposed rule would have targeted 55.7mpg, rather than 50.4mpg.

(Note: CAFE fuel economy calculations are more lenient than EPA calculations, especially on electric vehicles (though that calculation just changed too ), so cars won’t see an average of 50mpg in the real world)

These numbers are much lower than the effect of the EPA’s newly-finalized emissions rules , which the administration said will save $100 billion per year in fuel and health costs, cut 7 billion tons of climate pollution, and save $6,000 per vehicle. Those standards were also softened from the original proposal in response to automaker lobbying .

The two rules are meant to complement each other, attacking the problem of pollution and fuel costs from different angles.

The EPA’s rules regulate tailpipe pollution in a technology-agnostic way, allowing automakers flexibility in how they meet higher emissions standards. And CAFE simply sets an average fuel economy requirement – which is also technology-agnostic, and automakers can meet it by increasing efficiency in whatever way they see fit.

In either case, a higher electric vehicle share is the easiest way to meet the new numbers, so both will encourage automakers to offer more consumer choice of high-tech, low-polluting electric vehicles. The DoE also recently reduced how much “extra credit” EVs get , which means automakers can’t just sell a few EVs to meet higher targets, and will have to offer a greater EV share. This new calculation will make the new CAFE rules more effective, offsetting some of the disappointment from the lower mileage target.

The complementary rules will also be more resilient to legal challenges from a republican party that is hostile to human health and the pocketbooks of Americans. Senator Ted Cruz already said that he will try to reverse the money-saving rule through the Congressional Review Act, though it is unlikely that this effort will bear fruit.

In addition, several republican attorneys general have already filed suit against the EPA regulation, demanding that Americans be saddled with higher fuel costs and more poisonous air in order to satiate their donors in Big Oil. And the convicted felon running for president on the republican ticket has told oil companies he will take $1 billion in bribes in exchange for efforts to make cars more expensive for Americans.

But both are well within the purview of the EPA’s and DoT’s mandates, as has been recognized many times in the past. And even if the US supreme court ignores the law to rule against one (as they have done before) , the other might survive for longer.

Reaction to today’s CAFE rule was mixed. Environmental and health groups were mostly positive on it with Sierra Club and American Lung Association supporting the changes, though Dan Becker of the Center for Biological Diversity said the rules don’t go far enough and that the administration “caved to automaker pressure.”

Automakers, for their part, supported the changes, through the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the main automaker lobbyist. AAI President John Bozzella (who we have repeatedly covered for lying to support more pollution) said that the rule “works with the other recent federal tailpipe rules,” which was AAI’s main desire – to ensure that the various government rules were complementary of one another, instead of in conflict. That said, given his opposition to reasonable rules in the past , his acceptance of this rule does inspire some skepticism.

Beyond these rules, the administration has implemented lots of other policies to encourage the transition to EVs.

To take care of upfront costs, the  Inflation Reduction Act  includes credits for light- and heavy-duty EV purchases and charger installations, along with incentives for domestic manufacturing. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law incentivizes chargers further.

On the commercial/heavy side, ports get specific support from the  Clean Ports Program , as do  school buses , and the EPA is ensuring that California  will remain a testbed for even better environmental rules . The administration also recently released  a master infrastructure plan to electrifying all the US’ freight routes by 2040 .

Biden also recently increased tariffs on EVs , supposedly to help encourage domestic manufacturing. But this is probably the wrong way to approach the problem .

Electrek’s Take

We can basically copy our Take from any other recent article on these emissions standards.

On the one hand, it’s great to see things moving forward, and the government does seem to be working on electrification from every angle.

On the other hand, this doesn’t move forward fast enough, and we need to stop listening to automakers begging government to let them go bankrupt as they refuse to move quickly enough on the transition.

The transition is coming, and within a couple decades, every car on the road has to be electric. Not only are they better, and consumer demand will move in the direction of EVs for that reason anyway (likely in advance of targets , as we’ve seen before ), but rapid electrification of transport is required if we want to have any chance of avoiding the worst effects of climate change.

At this point, we cannot move to cleaner transport fast enough, and any standard yet proposed by any nation (well, except Norway) is not strong enough to meet the environmental needs of the planet. So all of these standards could bear to be stronger, this one among them.

We still need to celebrate movement in the right direction, and recognize that the opposition wants to move in a worse direction , which would cause more harm to Americans and to every living being on Earth.

But we can be disappointed and ask for more, which we do again today, as we have in the past.
