Tour Activity Level

The activity level for this tour:

You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.

You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.

You’re an on-the-go traveler. You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.

What travelers say about their Christmas Market tours

Tips for planning a trip to europe’s christmas markets.

There are so many Christmas markets all around the world! We offer tours to Christmas markets in Amsterdam, Brussels, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Heidelberg, to name a few.

Here are some of the top markets on our European Christmas Market tours:

  • Maastricht, the Netherlands.  Maastricht, in the  Netherlands , is a charming medieval city with cobblestone streets and fairy tale views. The small huts are filled with holiday gifts, mulled wine, local cheeses, and more.
  • Trier, Germany.  Christmas markets originated in  Germany , making this one even more magical. From local artwork to handmade ornaments, you can find the most unique gifts here—and also some of the best gingerbread cookies around.
  • Brussels, Belgium.  This market, like the city itself, is very large. In addition to the vendors selling food and other goods, there’s a large ferris wheel, ice skating rink, carousel, games, and beer tents.
  • Innsbruck, Austria.  If you’ve ever dreamed of strolling through a  Christmas market in the Alps  with a cup of hot mulled wine, this one’s for you.

There are also Christmas Market tours outside of Europe, too. From New York to Toronto, check out  our 5 favorite Christmas markets not in Europe .

One of the best parts of our tours to Christmas markets is seeing all the souvenirs and gifts our travelers find. From scented ornaments and Advent calendars to cinnamon cookies and handmade nutcrackers, you’re bound to find a gift for everyone on your list. Check out  the best souvenirs you can find on our European Christmas Market tours .

The most important thing to know about European Christmas market vacations is that each one is unique. You could visit ten markets and have a different experience at each one! Read our blog on  what to do at Europe’s different Christmas markets .

Another tip is to be sure to visit at least one market at night. That’s when they’re the most magical! Show up hungry, too, because there are so many delicious foods to try at each market.

Lastly, if you’re wondering what to pack for a Christmas Market tour, bring lots of warm layers to keep toasty as you walk around the outdoor winter wonderland. And of course, our best tip is to leave room in your luggage for all the souvenirs you’ll bring home!

Christmas Market in Vienna, Austria

Vienna at Christmas Time

The Austrian capital was one of the pioneers of the Christmas market tradition, holding its first event in 1298. Visitors today can enjoy any number of markets, including the Viennese Christmas Market—in front of city hall—and the market at Baroque Schönbrunn Palace, as well as shopping stalls in the historic Spittelberg District.

Jungfrau Mountain, Berne, Switzerland

Christmas Markets in Zurich

With 150 stalls and operated completely indoors, a 50 foot Christmas tree adorned with Swarovski crystals welcomes visitors to Zurich as they arrive at the Main Train Station. With fruit cake, vendors from all over the world, and all kinds of other traditional Christmas cuisine, the air is filled with the scents and sounds of the holidays. Exhibitors compete for the honor of being named the “Most Beautiful Stall” at the market, ensuring that the entire venue is beautifully adorned. The Zurich market is the largest indoor market in Europe, making it the perfect escape for those blustery cold evenings.

Munich Christmas Market at night, Germany

Christmas in Munich

Stalls surround an impressive 85 foot Christmas tree in the German Capital. Here you’ll find children dressed as angels and learning to be the next generation of crafters inside the “Heavenly Workshop” in town hall. Musicians fill the air with festive music every Friday before Christmas as guests hop on the Christmas tram that parades them through the old city as they eat gingerbread cookies and sip hot spiced wine.

Prague Christmas Market at night, Czech Republic

Prague for the Holidays

The abundant Gothic architecture provides a perfect backdrop to the Christmas scene you’ll find in Prague. The two most famous Christmas markets, held at Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, are walking distance from each other. Wander among the traditional wooden huts to admire handmade wooden toys and jewelry, Czech marionettes, nativity scenes, and even a petting zoo. Prague also offers numerous culinary delights, including   klobása   (sausage), roasted ham,   Trdelník   (a rolled pastry),   Vosí Hnízda   (beehive cookies), and hot mulled wine

European Christmas Markets Tours & Travel Guide

European Christmas Markets Attractions & Landmarks Guide

What are christmas markets in europe.

Christmas markets originated in German-speaking parts of Europe in the late Middle Ages. The first recorded Christmas market was the Vienna December Market in 1298. Early markets sold meat, decorations, and crafts, and often featured singing and dancing.

Today, there are Christmas markets all over Europe, from neighborhood markets in small villages to world-famous holiday destinations. They continue to serve as a place for people to gather, shop, and celebrate the holidays.

Will Christmas Markets Be Open in 2020?

This year has been full of uncertainties, closure both local and international and plans have changed or been canceled all together. This may leave you wondering, what about Christmas markets? Will they be open. The simple answer is yes and no. Some Christmas markets are open to visitors and many others, unfortunately, are not. Here are some of the top European Christmas markets you can visit in 2020 and their safety protocols.

Basel Christmas Market, Switzerland: A stunning winter destination, this Switzerland Christmas market has nearly 200 stalls selling all things Christmas from spices to decorations. There are many family friendly activities including gingerbread decoarting and train rides. The market has yet to include Covid-19 safety protocols which suggest there may not be any. Consider your own health risks before visiting.

Christmas in Tivoli, Copenhagen, Denmark: This market is a magical destination. The grounds are decorated with  500,000 fairy lights and on December 13 more than 100 girls walk through the gardens with candles for a very Christmas-y feel. This destination is perfect for families, couples and solo travelers alike. The market has put safety protocols in place to combat Covid-19 which includes visitors booking their time of arrival before visiting, sanitizing stations and distance markers scattered throughout and guests will be required to wear masks.

Viennese Dream Christmas Market, Austria: Full of festive spirit, Viennese Dream Christmas Market has reindeer rides, a ferris wheel and stunning Christmas decorations. There are over 150 stalls selling tasty holiday treats and the famous Tree of Hearts is a must-see. Safety precautions have been added this year due to Covid-19 including mandatory masks.

Top 10 European Christmas Markets

Due to Covid-19, not all of these markets will be open in 2020. Each destination will be updated with current information on whether they will be open this year or not.

**Note: Situations are constantly changing during the pandemic so be sure to check with the market's website before traveling.

Nuremberg, Germany -  Christkindlesmarkt is likely the most famous Christmas market in the world. Visitors can enjoy mulled wine and gingerbread while browsing the hundreds of stalls. Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Vienna, Austria -  Vienna’s famous Magic of Advent fair features ice skating, cookie-making, and a Ferris wheel. Open in 2020.

Bath, United Kingdom -  About 2 hours outside of London, Bath is known for its Roman baths and Georgian architecture. Almost all vendors at the Bath Christmas Market sell goods made in Britain and about 80 percent of vendors are local to the area.  Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Salzburg, Austria -  While slightly less well-known than Vienna’s market, the Salzburg Christmas Market is worth a visit for its location at the historic Salzburg cathedral and the Hohensalzburg fortress.  Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Prague, Czech Republic -  Prague’s Old Town is known for being a great place to spend Christmas. Cathedrals, lights, snowfall, and a giant Christmas tree transform this capitol city into something out of a storybook.  Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Tallinn, Estonia -  The first known Christmas tree was displayed in Tallinn in 1441. Over 600 years later, Tallinn was voted European Best Destinations’ “Best Christmas Market of 2019”.  Open in 2020.

Colmar, France -  The historic French city of Colmar lights up for the holidays. The entire town is filled with wreaths, Christmas lights, and street vendors for the month of December.  Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Edinburgh, Scotland -  Edinburgh’s market is especially exciting for children, who can enjoy a Christmas tree maze, a train ride, and a 108-foot Ferris wheel.  Cancelled due to Covid-19.

Stockholm, Sweden -  Taste reindeer meat and glögg (mulled wine) in Sweden’s historic Old Town.   Open in 2020.

Oslo, Norway -  Oslo’s Christmas market features an ice skating rink and hundreds of stalls. This market is famous for its food, from caramel apples to smoked salmon.  Open in 2020.

What to Expect

Depending on when you visit, the markets can be packed with locals and tourists. If you are trying to avoid crowds, consider visiting in late November or early December. In general, the closer to Christmas Day you visit, the more crowded the markets will be.

Remember that these markets are traditionally outdoors-- Christmastime in most places in Europe is very cold, so dress warmly!

What Can You Buy at European Christmas Markets?

Generally, you can buy souvenirs, crafts, religious objects, and traditional delicacies at Christmas markets in Europe. Many markets feature items created by local vendors. What you might find at a Christmas market will depend on where you are; for example, you might find handcrafted wool tartan scarves in Scotland or lebkuchen (gingerbread) cookies in Germany.

Food and drink at European Christmas markets

European markets usually offer a variety of traditional dishes, so visiting one is a great way to try the local cuisine. German Christmas markets are known for their bratwurst and gingerbread cookies.

In some countries in Northern Europe, such as Estonia and Norway , you can try reindeer meat. Christmas-themed treats and candies are common, and markets throughout Europe offer mulled wine and local liquors.

River Cruises to see Christmas Markets in Europe

The Danube River and the Rhine River are popular river cruises for seeing Christmas markets in Europe. On the Danube, visitors can disembark at Vienna, Melk, Salsburg, Passau, Regensburg, and Nürnberg. The Danube once connected the Roman Empire, and the cities along its banks are filled with beautiful architecture and cultural history.

The Rhine River flows through Germany , France , and Switzerland . Markets along the Rhine include Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, Basel, and Lucerne. Aboard a river boat, travelers can experience traditional meals and holiday events, as well as visiting a variety of Christmas markets.

Our guide to the best Christmas markets in Europe

Christmas market in Vienna

A sunshine-filled sailing trip around the coast of Croatia or enjoying Sangria and tapas on a warm evening in Spain might be what springs to mind when someone mentions a Euro trip, but there’s so much to do during the colder months too. Yep, I’m talking about taking a winter holiday in Europe.

Visiting Christmas markets is one of the best things to do in Europe at this time of the year. What’s not to love? The festive spirit is at an all-time high, with locals and tourists joining together to enjoy mulled wine, decorations and entertainment. Lights twinkle above, snow crunches underfoot and the air rings with cheerful festive songs. And the food – oh the food! The smell of roasting chestnuts and freshly baked gingerbread is enough to make anyone giddy with excitement. Many would agree that it’s the most magical time to be in Europe.

Throughout December, we’ll be running a special Christmas Market itinerary through Germany , Austria and Hungary taking in the best of the Yuletide festivities in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest. The itinerary is packed with visits to the region’s most famous markets – as well as some less conventional ones – and also features plenty of free time and general sightseeing opportunities. Come nightfall each evening, you’ll rug up and head to the markets to eat, drink and peruse the stalls.

Munich is home to over 20 Christmas markets, so you’ll definitely want the expertise of your local leader to help you determine which ones are worth your time. The Kripperlmarkt is the perfect market for Christmas traditionalists – it’s literally a ‘manger market’, where you can buy everything you would ever need to recreate the perfect nativity scene. We’re talking three wise men figurines through to farm animals and of course, the stable itself.

Tollwood is touted as the ‘market of ideas’ and is the place where different ethnic groups from around Germany come to share their diverse Christmas traditions. All the international food served is organic, so you can enjoy delicious global cuisine as you browse the toys, woodcrafts, candles and more.

Even outside of the official marketplaces, there is plenty of festive cheer to be enjoyed around Munich. Wander over to the Town Hall and watch the daily Christmas concert that runs while the markets are on – or simply grab a hot gluehwein , a traditional mulled wine, and watch the rugged-up crowds strolling by.

2. Salzburg

Christmas market in Salzburg, Austria.

Possibly most famous for being the setting of The Sound of Music , Salzburg’s hills really do come alive at Christmas time. The Christmas Market in Cathedral Square is a crowd-pleaser, with plenty of sugary snacks to sustain you as you explore the stalls and listen to the sweet sounds of the Salzburg choirs performing live around the market. Grab a cinnamon-dusted baked apple or some roasted nuts and immerse yourself in the magic of Christmas.

If you want to experience the festivities on a smaller scale, the iconic Hohensalzburg Fortress hosts a more intimate Christmas market, called the Advent Market. You have to reach the fortress by cable car, but once you do, the stunning Christmas lights in both in the courtyard of the fortress and the distant city below make it all worthwhile. Snack on local treats and do your Christmas shopping to the soundtrack of the local trumpeters.

Vienna ’s old-world charm is the perfect place to enjoy your own Christmas fairytale, with plenty of different Christmas markets to choose from. If arts and crafts are your thing, head to Christmas Village located in the old Vienna hospital and shop for (or simply admire) the handmade wares from craftsmen and women all over the country.

The market in front of Schönbrunn Palace is an excellent place to soak up a bit of local culture and grab dinner. Here there are plenty of opportunities to indulge in Christmas snacks and seasonal Viennese food including a variety of hot grilled sausages, maroni (simmered chestnuts) and a range of pastries such as doughnuts, pretzels and waffles. Don’t forget to grab a cup of punsch , a local spiced liqueur served hot.

Or, if you’re looking for a bit of everything – shopping, delicious local cuisine and a picturesque part of town to explore – then head to the Spittelberg Markets. This market is located throughout the historical Biedermeier quarter, which is known for its beautiful architecture.

4. Budapest

Traditional langos in Hungary.

Langos = YUM! Image via Shutterstock.

The grandeur of a city like Budapest is pretty special at any time of year but visiting during the festive season is even better. Head to Vorosmarty Square to see the biggest and brightest Christmas market Budapest has to offer – and when I say brightest, I really mean it; the whole area is decorated with Christmas trees and quaint fairy lights.

There are hundreds of stalls to explore, and a range of Hungarian fare on offer to keep your tummy happy while you shop – from dodolle , a traditional potato dumpling to langos , a deep-fried flatbread served with various toppings, sour cream, cheese and garlic butter. Or, if you’re more of a sweet tooth, you can’t miss trying kurtoskalacs , a cinnamon Hungarian chimney cake that goes perfectly with a local mulled wine.

Music lovers will be able to get into the festive spirit with a special alpine Christmas Market concert from the balcony of Munich's town hall, which takes places every day while the Christmas markets are on. Sip on a mug of gluehwein, grab a grilled sausage and browse the markets full of toys, wood carvings, candles etc.

Travel south-east into Austria by train to Salzburg today, which should take around one hour and forty five minutes. Built on the fortune of its famous salt mines, Salzburg is the birthplace of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarves legend, home to the hills from the Sound of Music and purveyor of absolutely everything Mozart. On arrival, check in to your hotel and then head out into the city for an orientation walk with your leader. The city will captivate with its history, as well as its cobblestone lanes, bubbling river and charmingly kitsch atmosphere. In the late afternoon, visit the atmospheric Christmas market in Cathedral Square. The smells of gluhwein, roasted chestnuts, toasted almonds and cinnamon brushed baked apples waft through the marketplace, while the sounds of traditional Salzburg choirs fill the air. Later on, jump in to a cable car and reach the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city’s most visible landmark. This fully preserved castle hosts very small, intimate Christmas market and if you’re lucky, a Christmas themed live music.

Today is free to explore Salzburg and the surrounding areas. Perhaps make your way to the salt mine in Berchtesgaden, situated in the German Alps. Otherwise, you may want to experience the life of the von Trapp family from the Sound of Music and visit movie scenes of the Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain, Leopoldskron Palace and Hellbrunn Palace. In the evening, why not head back to the Christmas markets to soak up even more of the blissful atmosphere?

Board a train bound for Vienna today (approximately 2.5 hours). On arrival, embark on a leader-led walking tour of Vienna, passing grand buildings and parks. You'll see many monuments dedicated to famous composers and historical figures. In your free time, perhaps visit the striking Hofburg Palace, the Leopold Museum or seek out exceptional city views on the Prater Ferris Wheel. Later in the afternoon, head to the Christmas markets in front of the City Hall. Browse the markets, sip on Christmas punch and snack on some freshly baked cinnamon biscuits.

You'll have the whole day to explore Vienna, so perhaps head to Schoenbrunn Palace, which was designed by Empress Maria Theresa herself. The gardens are free to all visitors but there is a charge for entrance and tours of the palace. Avoid long queues by pre-booking your tickets at schoenbrunn.at. Also, with over 12 Christmas markets to visit in the city, you'll be sure to find the perfect Christmas present.

Travel east from Vienna to Budapest by train (approximately 3 hours). Known as the 'Pearl of the Danube', Budapest's grand architecture and boulevards evoke a time gone by. With so much to see and do, hiring a bicycle is a great way to move between sights and attractions. After a short orientation walk around the city, it's time to visit the Christmas markets. With the main Christmas market being located in Vorosmarty Square, every street light, tree and market stall lit up it gives the area a real Christmas feel. There are plenty of stalls offering different Hungarian foods to try and buy. Experience these great markets of Budapest with a glass of mulled wine or shot of traditional Hungarian palinka. The combination of market cheer and Neo-Renaissance architecture is a charming one.

Your Christmas Market adventure comes to an end today. There are no more activities planned and you're free to depart the accommodation at any time after you check-out.

Christmas Market Tours and Trips

Taking Christmas Market tours and trips opens you to the spirit of the festivity

Christmas Market Tour Highlights

  • Marvel at the lights on display when wandering around the markets at night. The beautiful decorations are stunning — and even more spectacular once the sun goes down.
  • Taste local delicacies from street food vendors surrounding the markets. Try a delicious slice of roasted ham in Prague or a mouthwatering grilled sausage at Germany’s iconic Nuremberg Christmas Market.
  • Sip a cup of glühwein to stay warm during the chilly European winter nights. This spiced wine is the perfect beverage to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere and is often served in traditional mugs.
  • Check out handmade, one-of-a-kind crafts that you won't find anywhere else.  From sheepskin jackets in Munich to blown glass candles in Strasbourg , find an endless array of items for a shopping extravaganza.
  • Walkthrough enchanting squares teeming with buildings of marvelous architectural styles. Historic cities such as Tallinn , Budapest and Vienna each have their own characteristic charm to create a winter wonderland.
  • Put on a pair of skates and work your magic on the ice rinks. Numerous markets throughout Europe have skating rinks for a thrilling time in the chilly weather.
  • Experience the Christmas spirit that fills the air when waltzing through the markets. Enjoy the company of friends and family and listen to carolers sing tunes during this time of glee.
  • Learn the history of Christmas and why it is such a special occasion in Christianity. Normally, there is a nativity stall that depicts the birth of Jesus Christ and churches offer services to celebrate the holiday.

Christmas Market Tips

  • Book your flight to your first destination early to save money on airline costs. If you wait too long, flights can become extremely pricey and you will have fewer funds for your Christmas Market trip.
  • Head to the Christmas Market during the weekday instead of the weekend. Lines will be much shorter and the overall atmosphere will be less chaotic than the weekends.
  • Plan your Christmas Market tour during the early part of the season to avoid larger crowds. Many markets open during mid-November and this an ideal time to partake in the magical atmosphere before it becomes much busier.
  • Ensure you have plenty of cash for the duration of your Christmas Market tour. Many stalls you encounter will not accept credit cards and you could miss out on purchasing a wonderful souvenir.
  • Wander to a smaller, less-visited city and discover one of Europe’s hidden gems. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore more of the continent and have a more intimate experience.

European Christmas Markets

small group european christmas market tours

Tour Summary

We invite you to join us on our ‘Christmas Markets of Europe’  Small Group Tour & Conference through Central Europe visiting Austria, Germany, and the Alsace region of France.

From late November through December, Europe turns into a magical world of lights, handicrafts, gingerbread, mulled wine and falling snow. On this curated Amaco tour, we make it easy for you to immerse yourself in the most atmospheric Christimas and Advent Markets of Europe.

Our Main Conference begins in the Bavarian Capital of Munich . Spend 3 nights delving into the festivities and the darker side of Munich’s WWII history. The contrasts are remarkable!

The Marienplatz (town square) is transformed into a Christmas extravaganza with the Christkindlmarkt , the city’s oldest Christmas market, and its massive Christmas tree that towers over the Neo-Gothic town hall.

You’ll then make your way to the Bavarian town of  Füssen to delve into the world of King Ludwig II of Bavaria’s madcap world of ornate castles visiting Neuschwanstein – the fairytale-like castle which supposedly inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

It’s then deep into the Black Forest  where we conference in one of the most quaint Black Forest settings before visiting the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market with one of the most picturesque settings of any Christmas Market in the whole of Europe.

You’ll delve into the art of Black Forest Cake creations, discovering the delicate balance of ingredients required to make this mouthwatering masterpiece  – you are in the Black Forest after all!

It’s then time to cross the border into France . The Alsace region lies in the northeastern area of France bordering Germany and Switzerland. It has alternated between German and French control over the centuries and reflects a unique mix of German and French culture .

The locals do not consider themselves French or German but Alsatian – a distinct mix of the two!

France’s ‘Capital of Christmas’ Strasbourg is your base for 3 nights. Looking like a real-life nativity scene, you’ll find over 300 traditional market stalls crowding the city’s central square. Imagine teddy bears decorating century-old houses and Baccarat chandelier-lined streets – it’s all here. The blend of French and German culture is also reflected in the architecture here. Colourful, half-timbered houses line cobblestoned streets.

You’ll visit the picture-perfect town of Colmar , this medieval town is part of the Alsatian wine route and the start of a day exploring the wine villages with 12th-century churches, bell towers, winding canals and century-old wine houses passed from generation to generation.

You’ll then cross the border back to Germany stopping in Heidelberg – a charming university town on the Necker River before arriving in the walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.  You’ll head out with ‘The Nightwatchmen’ to discover life in medieval times.

One of the most captivating German towns, expect choral singing, the warm smell of cinnamon and allspice wafting in the air as you explore the cobble-stoned medieval streets filled with market stalls.

Leaving the snow-dusted rooftops behind we head to Franconia . The city of Nuremberg held great significance during the Nazi Germany era. With its mixed past of Nazi Rallies and the Nuremberg trials, you’ll spend some time learning about its dark past.

The Christmas Market ambiance is not amiss here either. Fostered by historic squares medieval architecture and the looming Nuremberg castle.

The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt is one of the oldest and most famous Christmas Markets in the world. In the wooden booths of “the little city of wood and cloth” you’ll find traditional, often handmade Christmas decorations and sweet treats such as gingerbread and Spekulatius almond cookies.

From here you follow the Romantic Road toWürzburg before arriving at the Schlosshotel Kronberg in Taunus. Built between 1889 and 1893 for the German Empress Victoria Friedrich  you’ll celebrate your last evening in Germany amongst the treasures of paintings and antiques the empress once owned.

For those with a little extra time, we encourage you to consider joining us on our Pre-Tour to Austria.

Imagine crisp winter air , the glitter of a thousand candles, steaming mugs of mulled wine , roasted chestnuts, the tinkle of glass baubles, and the delicate crafts of a hundred artisans. Now throw in the scent of baked potatoes, fresh bread, strudel, candied nuts, and more. Then spread it all out in front of a magnificent Baroque palace. There you have it – a Viennese Christmas Market.

Experience three nights in Vienna , the Imperial city also renowned as the ‘City of Dreams’ for being the residence of the world’s pioneering psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud. Immerse yourself in its wealth of architectural marvels, from Baroque palaces and gardens to the late 19th-century Ringstraße, adorned with majestic buildings, monuments, and lush parks.

Visit Schönbrunn Palace  – the summer residence of the Habsburg rulers.  The parade court transforms into a winter wonderland with soul-stirring melodies and the scent of roasted almonds and mulled wine.

Leaving the city behind you’ll take a meandering drive through the stunning natural beauty of the Salzkammergut region with a visit to Melk Abbey and Hallstatt with its 16th-century alpine houses and quaint alleyways to cafes and shops.

Arrive in Salzburg , where you stay for 2 nights. The birthplace of Mozart  becomes a movie scene with its twinkling lights and Christmas cheer. The origins of the famous Salzburg Christmas market go all the way back to the late 15th century. Back then, the so-called “Tandlmarkt” would be held on Cathedral Square in the heart of the city, offering a wide range of goods for the locals to buy.

This enchanting town on the border of Germany is also the backdrop to ‘The Sound Of Music’ and the birthplace of ‘Silent Night’. The carol was written and first performed here. Market stalls were first set up here in the 15th century and concerts occur every day leading up to Christmas. You’ll wander this picturesque town whilst taking in the aroma of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked pretzels.

Leave Austria behind and cross the border visiting Lake Chemisee  with its castle Herrenchiemsee.

The castle on an island is one of  King Ludwig II’s  mad creations inspired by Versailles. Known as the crown jewels of all palaces built by the Bavarian king it was the first project of the King and the last to start construction, after buying the island of Herreninsel for that purpose.

The Pre-Tour ends with an arrival in Munich to meet new participants joining the Main Conference.

In each location, you’ll enjoy the history, Christmas markets, and culinary delights whilst staying at some of the finest hotels in Europe.

We’ve kept some destinations up our sleeve that will surely enhance the itinerary and we can guarantee there will be no shortage of castles, fairytale architecture, cones of steaming chestnuts, handblown baubles, and Christmas cheer.

You’ll discover the history, culture and people of Vienna as you walk around Burggarten, the former Emperor’s private garden, Augustinian Church and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

After lunch you’ll head to the Schönbrunn Palace. At the end of the 17th century Emperor Leopold I commissioned the Baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach to design an imperial hunting lodge for his son, Crown Prince Joseph.  Replacing the château de Plaisance built on this site for the dowager empress Eleonora of Gonzaga in 1642, it grew into a palatial imperial residence over the course of the 18th century.

You’ll tour the many rooms before you a free to enjoy the Christmas Markets on the grounds of the palace.

Embark on a culinary journey, indulging in savoury dishes like stuffed dumplings, oven-baked and spiral-cut potatoes, soups, cheesy spätzle, old Hungarian kettle goulash, and sweet treats like Kaiserschmarrn, freshly baked waffles, and fragrant Germknödel all on offer at the many stalls.

Of course she was not travelling alone: It must have been a wonderful spectacle to see the Baroque splendour of 21 coaches, 36 carriages and 450 horses moving through the Black Forest. Marie Antoinette stopped at the old inn. A way stone can still be found today, which informed the future queen that Freiburg was still a three-hour drive away.

Today most come to experience the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market. Before having time to take in the energetic festive atmosphere you’ll delve into local traditions such as cuckoo clock making and glass blowing.

The origin of Christkindlesmarkt goes back to the traditional fairs of the Middle Ages. The market was first mentioned in 1628, but it’s considered to be older. The original Nuremberg Christmas market was a three-day-event, where traditional craftsmen gathered to sell their wares. With time, the interest in the event increased and the three days were expanded to three weeks.

Travel Options & Extensions

Given everything that has happened in the travel industry of late – you’re correct to be vigilant about where you spend your travel dollar.

Amaco is not only a member of  ATIA (the Australian Travel Industry Association) and CATO (Council of Australian Tour Operators) but we are also ATAS Travel Accredited . This means we have met strict industry financial, operational, and management standards and criteria. Only the best industry agents achieve this accreditation meaning that you can travel with us knowing that you’re in safe and very capable hands.

With almost 30 years of experience  in planning and running conferences, we understand that participants often want to add additional travel destinations and adventures either before or after the all-inclusive packages we provide.

Other operators might discourage you from doing this. Sometimes, it’s because of the added complexity it creates and at other times they’ll try to talk you out of it simply because they don’t have capable or experienced consultants with the breadth and depth of the consultants we employ.

We encourage all participants to make the most of the time away . This might mean departing earlier than the rest of the group and visiting other destinations before meeting up with the main group at the conference or staying on at the conclusion and doing some additional travel.

Either way –  our advisors are perfectly positioned to assist you with making these arrangements and will do all the hard work for you  – seamlessly combining your personalised itinerary with the group program.

CAN I BOOK MY OWN FLIGHTS?

Yes… not a problem. We understand that people may have a preferred Travel Agent they want to use and we don’t have any issues with you doing so. We’ll advise you of suggested arrival and departure times to allow you to make use of our group transfers.

That said though… we do have experienced consultants who are ready and waiting to help… even if that means just giving you a comparison price – nothing wrong with some competition.

If you do book your own flights, we do ask for a copy of your full itinerary so that we can double-check it to ensure that it fits with our program and group itinerary.

One word of warning, however, when booking flights independently – as the non-ticketing Agent we’re not notified of any time changes or cancellations to your booking. If anything changes with your booking, it will be up to your agent to contact you and then for you to contact us.

It is also worth pointing out that even though we’ll have experienced staff members escorting the group during the conference, as the non-ticketing Agent we are unable to make contact or deal with the airline on your behalf.

CAN I CHOOSE MY OWN CLASS OF TRAVEL?

We used to include flights in our travel package but found that in many cases the fares were more expensive than the best available daily fares or were not applicable for people who were looking to extend before or after the main conference travel dates.

We also felt it was unfair on you, as a participant, to unknowingly pay a premium for a more flexible group fare when you are already committed to attending the conference.

By not including the airfare in the package, you are able to work with one of our experienced and knowledgeable Travel Consultants to arrange flights on any airline and from any destination depending on your preferences…. including the class of travel.

CAN I VISIT OTHER PLACES BEFORE OR AFTER THE CONFERENCE?

In short….. Yes !

You’re encouraged to talk to our  experienced travel consultants  to learn more about the options open to you  either before or after the conference itineraries . We will gladly work with you to put together a  personalised itinerary  that can include as much or as little as you want.

We believe it is important for your own peace of mind to know that  our consultants are all employed directly by Amaco Small Group Tours  and are located in our office.

We don’t subcontract out the travel to a third party which means you can be comfortable knowing that whatever arrangements you make through Amaco will be tied together with the conference program to  make one continuous, seamless travel itinerary . We’ll put as much care and effort into your extension as we put into the planning of the conference.

Whether it is simply booking some airport transfers with a couple of nights accommodation through to more elaborate arrangements we are perfectly positioned to incorporate any individual travel plans into your overall conference itinerary.

Email or call us so we can put together your perfect itinerary.

TRAVEL INSURANCE - IS IT REALLY NECESSARY?

Much has been said about the value of travel insurance – especially given the broad-based exclusion policies many underwriters had in place which protected them from claims resulting from pandemics and epidemics.

A lot has changed in the past 12 – 18 months and many of the reputable travel insurance policies available in the market now not only include the usual cover for luggage and emergency medical expenses but also include coverage for COVID.

All members of the Amaco team are trained and authorised to provide information to clients regarding travel insurance. We routinely attend product updates on the various policy options and inclusions and stand ready to assist you in finding the right policy for you.

Please call our office and we will gladly explain the various different scenarios to you in greater depth.

Amaco is an Accredited Education Provider for the R oyal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine .

Each conference we run includes an education syllabus that assists GP’s, pharmacists and health professionals to improve the quality of care they provide to patients and customers while at the same time providing them the opportunity to travel to and experience new and exciting destinations.

Our conference will allow delegates the opportunity to earn CPD hours / points based on the content and time in sessions. As has been the case with past conferences, we will work closely with participants affiliated with other associations to ensure that they receive maximum recognition for attending the conference.

The content of the education sessions will be relevant to GPs, Medical Specialists, Pharmacists, Dentists, Nurses, and other health providers . We encourage all attendees to register for the conference sessions.

The Education Committee for the Christmas Markets of Europe Conference will be selected in mid-2024 with final conference topics to be chosen based on the feedback from our previous conference attendees and with input from the RACGP, ACRRM, and medical journals. Suitable speakers will be approached based on the topics selected.

Subject to final accreditation, the Christmas Markets of Europe Conference will include up to 12 hours of accredited education.

ACRRM members can also expect the education program to be accredited and to earn CPD points. RACGP and ACRRM accreditation will be applied for under the triennium 2023 to 2025.

As has been the case in the past, Amaco will work with pharmacy bodies and those affiliated with other associations to ensure that they receive maximum recognition for attending the conference.

We welcome applications from potential presenters and encourage anyone interested to contact us to obtain further information.

This Is Exactly How To Plan An Epic Christmas Market Trip To Europe This Winter

Planning a Christmas market trip to Europe this year? You’re in the right place because this guide will help you make sure you don’t miss a thing!

Last year, Caleb and I went on an EPIC Christmas market adventure across Europe, where we covered more than 25 cities and 50+ Christmas markets in less than 2 months. Hitting up that much Christmas in a short time required us to do a lot of planning in advance! Honestly, I’m tired just thinking about it.

In this guide, we’re sharing literally every single thing we did to plan our trip, including the tips that we *wish* we would have known before because our festive vacay would have been a lot smoother and enjoyable!

Let’s get into the festive deets!

Step 1: Choose Kind Of Markets You Want To Visit

The first and most important step that no one told us about when we were planning our European Christmas market extravaganza (which is why we are telling you) is to choose the STYLE of Christmas markets you want to visit.

Do you want to hit all the huge, over-the-top, most famous markets that have tons of people and ALL the food, drink, and entertainment options you can imagine? Or do you want to go to small, local markets that may have fewer options but are quieter, more authentic, and romantic?

Do you want to make sure you are in the main European cities so that there are *other* things to do than see the markets? Or, is your main focus on Christmas market-ing it up, and you’re fine staying in small towns that don’t have a lot of other “attractions?”

TAYLOR’S CHRISTMAS MARKET TIP:

We didn’t know that not all Christmas markets are created equal, so we visited all the ones you hear about the most, which was a mistake. Many of them felt over-commercialized and were crazy busy, so we wished that we had done more research and seen more of the smaller, more authentic markets (which we will see this coming Christmas!)

If you have NEVER done any markets, we suggest you pick a couple of the most famous markets, like Nuremberg, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, or Budapest, just to visit so you can experience what they are like

Step 2: Research Possible Markets Using Blogs AND City Websites

On that note, once you’ve picked the kinds of markets you want to visit, it’s time to get researching.

While blogs are GREAT (obviously. I AM writing one), we found that a lot of them said the same thing, and most just sang the praises of every single Christmas market in existence instead of being an honest guide about what to expect. This is why ours is that honest guide because we wished we had more realistic expectations going in, to be honest.

So, we recommend starting your research with blogs and other articles to start narrowing down the markets where you think you could see yourselves drinking so much mulled wine that you forget how cold your face is.

THEN, search for X Christmas market (where X is the city) and find the official Christmas market website f or that city (most have them) to really drill down into the offerings and events.

This will help you figure out what markets sound the most like you guys among the sea of general “BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS IN EUROPE” posts that you will find that all say the same thing. Just being honest.

Step 3: Pick The Best Month To Visit

This one will take you less time than it takes to drink a glass of mulled wine (can you tell what’s on my brain?) because you just have to choose between November and December.

If you’ve done your research, you should already know the opening dates of the markets you want to visit and can plan accordingly.

We find early December to be the best month. All the markets will be open, and they won’t be as crazy as right before Christmas

Step 4: Choose How Long To Stay At Each Christmas Market

Now that you know which markets you want to visit, you have to start setting your itinerary by planning how long you will stay in each city to experience the said market.

While Caleb and I usually don’t plan anything in advance because we’ve traveled enough to know how to do it on the fly, we don’t recommend this for a Christmas market holiday. So, having an idea of when you’ll be where is key.

Get Our Best Travel Tips

We won’t send you any spam & unsubscribe at any time!

Our general rule of thumb is to plan about 2 days/2 and nights for BIG cities  that have lots of markets (like Berlin, Dresden, Nuremberg, etc.) We stayed one day in some of these cities and felt too rushed.

If you are going to a small town, like Heidelberg or Esslingen, you really do only need one day/night.

These day recommendations assume that the *main* reason you are going to the cities is for the markets. If you want to explore the cities beyond the market, add more days!

Step 5: Set a Budget

Chances are you guys are so excited about all the magical festiveness that you are going to see that you haven’t realized that traveling at Christmas is EXPENSIVE.

One of the reasons we say that the Christmas markets are not worth visiting is because they were WAY MORE expensive than we planned, so factor this into creating a budget.

We found most mulled wine to be around $7-8 (cheaper in some Eastern European countries like Poland or Bratislava) and “meal” food like sausages, noodles, etc, to be anywhere from $10-$20!

Sweet snacks will probably run you $5-$10.

Hotels also get more expensive, so do your research on accommodation options in the cities you plan to visit. We always use Booking.com to save the most money .

Step 6: Create Your Itinerary

Now that you know when you’re going, where you’re going, how long you’ll stay in each city, and your budget, you can start laying it out in an itinerary.

When planning your trip, make sure you factor in any travel time you need. 2 days in Vienna is different than 2 days when you don’t get in until the evening of the first day, you know?

You’ll either be flying between countries/cities or taking the train, depending on how widespread you’re making this whole Christmas market extravaganza. We use the Trainline app to see what kind of trains might be available and how long it takes when we plan our trips.

Step 7: Make a List of Must Try’s/Must Do’s In Each Location

Something most people miss when creating a Christmas Market itinerary is making a list of the food, drinks, and activities in each location! If you just *hope* you remember everything in each city, you run the risk of missing stuff, and we don’t want that!

We always add some bullet points for any special food, drinks, or activities in each town and then review them before going to those markets to make sure we don’t miss out.

TAYLOR’S CHRISTMAS MARKET TIP

Write it in a note on your phone or a Google doc with the Google Docs app so you can refer to it throughout the day!

Step 8: Track Flights Using Open Jaw

The whole purpose of a Christmas market trip is to see lots of Christmas markets! So, unlike other vacations you may have taken, you may start and end in different cities or even different countries.

Once you’ve nailed down your travel dates and itinerary, you can start tracking flights. Our insider tip is to use an “open jaw” flight, meaning you arrive and depart from different locations. This gives you one extra day to enjoy the markets instead of having to get back to your starting location.

They are usually almost the same price as a round trip ticket + the cost of transportation to get back to your arrival city!

We use Skyscanner or our membership for Going.com to track flights and highly recommend them.

Step 9: Book Hotels In Advance

Whew – you’re almost done planning! Now, the second to last step is just to book hotels on Booking.com!

The Christmas market season in Europe is VERY busy, and this is one time you don’t want to leave booking to the last minute. We did this in Colmar and almost had to pay $800 for one night…10/10 do not recommend it!

Once you know all the things, start booking and LOCK IT IN BABY.

Step 10: Make a Packing List & Get Clothes

So, hate to burst your bubble here, but you’re going to be cold in Europe at Christmas. More excuse to drink mulled wine, though, we say!

Caleb did a TON of research on what to wear in Europe, and we were very happy with our choices because we were mostly pretty warm and super happy with them.

Invest in a good layering system, like a base layer, mid layer, and fleece, as well as a GOOD jacket and waterproof shoes. I did not bring the latter and had to buy them in Europe.

We made a list of all the warm clothes we brought to Europe for Christmas HERE.

Your Next Step After Planning Your Christmas Market Trip:

If you want to make sure your trip to Europe at Christmas is the most streamlined and enjoyable, you should follow our 10-step guide! Doing so will make sure you guys don’t go into the markets and they’re not what you thought they would be like what happened to us! You’ll make sure you eat the best food, have the best festive booze, and just have an all-around good time full of festive cheer. Cheesy, I know.

So, which tip was the most helpful?

Planning a Christmas market trip to Europe this year? This ultimate guide will give you all the steps to follow to make sure you don't miss a thing!
