Reviews of Small Group tours to Italy

Very well organised tour. Communications were timely and clear. Hotels were in very well chosen locations with comfortable rooms and excellent breakfasts. Local guides were informative.Transport in mini-vans was efficient and comfortable.
The food and guides were great! Hotels were very comfortable. Drivers were excellent!
The accommodation was a bit too small but wasn’t as big a deal as we were out for most of the day. Overall, it was an amazing experience and a great way to make new friends!

Active components such as hiking, bicycling and walking longer distances may be included, and hills and/or uneven terrain may be encountered on several days. Guests should be able to walk two to three miles and stand for long periods of time with no difficulty.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

A grand tour – in a small, intimate group... a trip of a lifetime through the most sought-after destinations in Italy with names like the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Rome, Venice and Florence...

Ferragamo museum & wine tasting, private classical recital in umbria, private classical music recital in a frescoed music room.

Between the late 16th century and the 1960s, a grand estate in the small Umbrian town of San Martino in Campo near Perugia was inhabited by members of the noble Donini family. What began as two 17th-century villas of the summer residence of the Donini counts became at the turn of the 21st century the hotel Alla Posta dei Donini, boasting many authentically restored features from centuries past. One of these is a sitting room that was primarily used for concerts, decorated with frescoed walls and ceilings painted by artists from the school of noted 18th-century painter Francesco Appiani. Fittingly, it's in this magnificent setting that you'll enjoy a private classical music recital for Tauck guests only!

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

This was a trip of a lifetime and I chose it because I felt the itinerary allowed me to experience the best Italy had to offer. All my expectations were met and exceeded!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

I wanted to thank you for an amazing vacation! We truly had the perfect vacation that was worry free. Alfredo went above and beyond to ensure everything went smoothly. He helped us at every turn. I will recommend you and your company to everyone and anyone who is traveling to Italy. Your company's tours are truly top notch. Also the tour guide in Cinque Terre was so incredibly sweet to my daughters, it warmed my heart.

Italy Tours & Experiences for the Soul

General information, about alma italia.

Alma Italia Travel is the bespoke travel company from Alma Italia Design, a group of Italian architects and interior designers.

Everything we do from booking your tour to saying arrivederci at the end of a beautiful time together is guided by our founding principles and values.

1) Family. At the heart of Italian life is the family. We will take care of you like our own family in Italy. Every travel detail is taken care of so you can share experiences, relax and connect with your own family and friends care free in the magical atmosphere of the soul of Italy.

2) Authenticity, Integrity and Sustainability. We work with the best family run businesses in Italy with integrity to give your family the most authentic experience of Italy you can possibly have. We don’t work with chains or big corporates to ensure our trips create a sustainable benefit to the local Italian economy.

3) Soul. Restore your soul in the soul of Italy. We want our tours to be full of adventure, and discovery but also rest. Our goal is that you leave Italy inspired and rejuvenated body, mind and soul.

ALMA ITALIA was founded with a passion to create a better way to travel Italy. Far from the mass tourism experience, and deeper than the generic ‘5-star luxury’ chain hotels. Alma [meaning soul in Italian dialect] offers an experience at the heart of Italian life—full of beauty, style, and authentic charm.

A love for all things Italy and her culture, fuels service that delights in the details, and unique experiences tailored to interest.

With a lifetime’s worth of local secrets, hidden gems and special friendships formed over two generations of organising Italy tours and trips to our homeland of Italy, you will benefit from Alma Italia’s ‘little black book’ of stylish places and exclusive contacts to unlock an authentic experience of Italy. Alma Italia ensures that our customised, bespoke and personalised Italy tours are truly the trips to Italy of your dreams.

Today Alma Italia, still owned and led by the Mazza family, renowned in Italy for their work in interior design, fashion and art has an international team based in the heart of Italy.  Our team is dedicated to ensuring your Italy tour is a stylish, carefree, joyful and relaxing time to reconnect with family and friends. If you are looking for Italy tours that are exclusive, safe in the privacy of your own group and enable you to experience the very best of Italy, then Alma Italia can craft the trip to Italy to fulfil your dreams.

Now led by the next generation, Alma Italia remains at heart a family business, dedicated to working with other Italian family businesses with your family in mind.

Expert Advice

diana

Some of what you think of as traditional Italian foods are actually American interpretations and not widely available there. Some examples are heavy cream sauces such as alfredo, spaghetti and meatballs, and chicken parmigiana (however, you may find these items in more tourist-oriented restaurants).

How to Choose a Travel Tour Company

Choosing a travel tour company requires careful consideration to ensure a memorable and enjoyable experience.

Research and Compare

Start by researching different travel tour companies online. Compare their itineraries, destinations, group sizes, inclusions, and prices to find the best fit for your preferences and budget.

Read Reviews

Check customer reviews and testimonials to gauge the company’s reputation and customer satisfaction. Look for reviews on multiple platforms to get a well-rounded perspective.

Accreditation and Licenses

Ensure the tour company is accredited and licensed, adhering to industry standards and regulations. Look for affiliations with reputable travel organizations.

Review the tour itinerary in detail. Ensure it covers the places and activities you’re interested in. Check if there’s a good balance of sightseeing, free time, and optional activities.

Inclusions and Exclusions

Pay attention to what’s included in the tour package (e.g., accommodation, meals, transportation, guided tours) and what’s not. Be clear about additional costs.

Tour Leaders/Guides

Check the qualifications and experience of tour leaders or guides. Experienced and knowledgeable guides can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Special Interests and Themes

Some companies offer tours based on specific interests (e.g., culinary, adventure, history). Choose a company that aligns with your interests.

By considering these factors and conducting thorough research, you’ll be better equipped to choose a travel tour company that suits your preferences and ensures a memorable travel experience.

The Benefits of a Small Group Tour

Small group tours offer several benefits that can greatly enhance your travel experience.

Personalized Attention

With fewer travelers in the group, you’ll receive more personalized attention from the tour guide. This allows for better interaction, the ability to ask questions, and a more tailored experience.

Flexibility

Small group tours are often more flexible, allowing for spontaneous detours, additional stops, and adjustments to the itinerary based on the group’s interests and preferences.

Less Waiting Time

Smaller groups are easier to manage, reducing waiting times at attractions, restaurants, and transportation, allowing you to make the most of your time.

Camaraderie

Traveling with a small group fosters a sense of camaraderie and facilitates the opportunity to make lasting connections with like-minded travelers.

Access to Unique Locations

Small groups can access places that larger tours may not be able to reach, providing opportunities to explore hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations.

Enhanced Cultural Experiences

Interacting with locals and immersing in the local culture is often more feasible in a small group setting, allowing for more authentic experiences.

Better Accommodation Options

Smaller groups can often stay in boutique hotels or unique accommodations that may not be suitable for larger tour groups.

Focus on Quality

Tour operators leading small group tours often focus on quality over quantity, ensuring a more intimate and enriching experience for travelers.

Some reviews of our tours:

“My daughter and I toured Sicily with Italy with Pleasure in 2019. It was the trip of a lifetime with professional and knowledgeable guides. I cant wait for life to return to normal so that I can once again book a tour! They are very easy to work with and booking was a breeze.”

“The tour was absolutely fabulous. I was able to see and experience things that created once in a lifetime memories. Riccardo was phenomenal. He made sure that our trip was perfect. Any question or request we had, he worked hard to answer/meet. He was so upbeat and fun while dealing with all of our varied personalities! Thanks again for a trip of a life!”

“Everything was perfect! They packaged the hotel, all meals, daily tours to a variety of very special and interesting sites, and handled all of the myriad of details seamlessly. The agency is very customer-service focused and was a pleasure to work with.”

“The tour was terrific as was the hotel accommodation, and Andy was the best! It was well organized and we didn’t skip a beat. That last night at the farmhouse was memorable and the perfect send-off. The tour guides in each of the cities we visited were well informed and did a great job explaining what we were seeing. I highly recommended Italy With Pleasure to people I know that might be interested in travel to Italy. The small group size, and in our tour, Andy, is what makes it happen.”

Day 1: Palermo & Monreale

Welcome to Palermo, with its many layers of civilizations and history. The city today is a vibrant, living testimony to this cultural heritage. Our hotel is located alongside the historic centre of town, and the vibrancy of this diverse city is all around you.

Starting the tour, we first look at a series of sights that provide an insight into both Palermo and Sicily – the Quattro Canti, the fountain Fontana Pretoria, and the exteriors of the Arab-Norman churches of San Cataldo and Martorana.

At this point we team up for the afternoon with a specialist expert who has a depth of knowledge about all things Sicily and Palermo. Together we travel a short distance to Monreale, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Monreale is on the outskirts of Palermo, a 30 minute drive.

We start by visiting the cathedral at Monreale, with incredible golden mosaics. It is said to be one of the finest Norman buildings in the world.

We go on to visit the cloisters at Monreale, a particularly evocative setting lined with marble columns. You’ll be amazed at the detailed carved marble and inlaid stone.

On returning to central Palermo we visit the Oratorio of Santa Cita. In this 'oratorio', a private chapel constructed in the 16th century, you will find sumptuous rococo stucco sculptures decorating the interior. The quality and detail of the sculptural elements are a wonderful surprise to many who visit here. This chapel really is a masterpiece of craftmanship.

After wandering through the Vucciria market area, we view the largest opera house in Italy, the Teatro Massimo (external only).

In the evening we dine together, sharing a meal of Sicilian dishes where we start to discover the unique flavours on offer here: Mediterranean vegetables that combine with Arabic influences to create this unique cuisine; seafood fresh from the Tyrrhenian Sea and distinctive local wines from grape varieties grown only in Sicily.

Day 2: Erice & Segesta

We depart for Erice, a charming town on a hilltop overlooking the western coast of Sicily. Erice is a medieval town, with beautiful cobbled lanes. There is a long history here, starting with a population that pre-dated the Greeks. We visit the site of the Temple of Venus, now a Norman castle. The views from this point are stunning, looking out over the Egadi Islands where the traditional tuna fishing grounds are.

For lunch we enjoy the traditional dish for this part of Sicily, which some people are surprised to find out is couscous. This western end of Sicily was most influenced by the Arab rule and for many centuries their own take on couscous has been made here.

We have lunch in Erice, after which we continue on Segesta, where we have our first glimpse of the monuments that remain from when Sicily was part of Magna Grecia (the greater Greek empire).

Segesta boasts one of the most intact Greek-era Doric temples anywhere, and an excellent theatre, both from the 5th century B.C. In fact some performances continue to be held in this theatre during the summer.

We return to Palermo in the early evening.

Day 3 - Agrigento

Today we depart from Palermo and travel first to Agrigento, with its famous ‘Valley of the Temples’.

This UNESCO World Heritage site features the beautiful Temple of Concordia, one of the most photogenic spots in Sicily. We are shown around by an expert guide, who explains the phases of civilisation here, as well as the current discoveries that are being made.

Strolling through the archaeological area gives a sense of the gravitas of history, as well as a pleasant experience of continued traditions, surrounded by almond groves and olive trees.

For lunch we stop at a farm in the countryside, where we get an opportunity to taste good, wholesome rural Sicilian produce. Much of our lunch is grown right here on the farm. We enjoy a leisurely lunch in the courtyard of the farmhouse.

After lunch we continue on to our hotel in the town of Ragusa, arriving in the early evening.

Accommodation Ragusa:

Day 4 - Ragusa and Modica

On waking in Ragusa, you can’t help but be charmed by the elegant palazzos and the picturesque winding streets.

We drive to the nearby town of Modica. While Modica is another of Sicily’s famed baroque towns, here we also have an ulterior motive, and that is chocolate. Modica is an important centre for chocolate making, and has its own distinctive style known as ‘cioccolato modicano’. This is made using a different production method to regular chocolate, based on Aztec techniques brought in during the period of Spanish rule. We have a tasting where you can appreciate the unique qualities of this chocolate. Later in the morning, we visit the Cava d’Ispica, a site where early civilisations of the area used to inhabit, and we can see many examples of these ancient populations.

We continue on to have lunch just outside Modica.

We work our way through a range of specialities from the Ragusa and Modica area. On our return to Ragusa we spend some time together to look at specific elements of the baroque architecture that are a feature of Ragusa. Ragusa is one of the best examples of the Sicilian baroque style, with ornate edifices and intricate detailing. Some of Sicily’s architectural gems are scattered through Ragusa. The buildings we see in this style were built from 1693 onwards and feature elegant balconies and balustrades. We return to our hotel in the afternoon.

Day 5: Siracusa

Today we reach Siracusa, a treasure trove of ancient palazzi, a fascinating old centre, and many harbourside restaurants where good living comes first.

The old town of Siracusa is the island of Ortigia, the heart of Siracusa, with the remains of the ancient Greek city.

We first walk through the Ortigia markets. Here the particular speciality is seafood, with the fishing fleet heading out from the adjacent port and bringing the fresh catch here each morning – the huge swordfish are an impressive sight. It is in places like markets that you really get a good feel for the people and the lifestyle of Sicily.

We visit the Duomo (the main church), elegant and domineering in the beautiful central piazza. This church has an intriguing history, going right back to its origin as the Greek Temple of Athena. We still see the ancient Greek columns forming part of the structure of the current church.

Taking advantage of our coastal location, lunch is in a restaurant that specialises in the seafood of the area.

We spend some more time after lunch exploring more of Siracusa, with some free time built in to the day to let you wander around independently.

Santa Cita Sicily small group tour italy

Day 6: Taormina and Sicilian Cooking

We first visit the ancient theatre in Taormina, built first by the Greeks and enlarged by the Romans. This theatre continues to be a premier location for music and drama performances to this day.

The rest of the morning and lunchtime is free time in Taormina. Visiting Taormina is like visiting an elegant film set, such is the combination of spectacular views (over the sea and Mt Etna), beautiful old buildings, plus a touch of the ancient (both Greek and Roman). We take full advantage of all three aspects (the view, the town, the ancient ruins) as we enjoy our time here.

Located high on a hill, there is time available to take the cable car from Taormina down to the beach below the town, and the island Isola Bella. Around town, as well as the archaeological sites, there are numerous ceramic shops and cafes on the piazza.

We taste wines produced on the lower slopes of Mt Etna, benefitting from Etna’s unique microclimate and lava soils. Wine has been made in Sicily for over 2000 years, and the Etna DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) region is one of the key quality wine areas. The predominant red grape is called Nerello – these wines are reminiscent of pinot noir – and the whites made from Carricante can be excellent.

We have a session cooking with a chef, where you take an active part in preparing a complete three course meal.

The dishes are typically Sicilian, a cuisine which has developed through the absorption of a myriad of influences through the ages. With today’s focus on Sicilian cooking, we have a local chef unlock some of the secrets and teach us the techniques used here. As well as this, we discuss the importance and provenance of the ingredients and produce used. Then we relax and eat!

“The Sicily Tour in 2019 was outstanding. All of the guides are so friendly, caring, knowledgeable and passionate about their country. This love comes through in every aspect of the Tour, and transfers to the group. The accommodations, the food, and the attractions were chosen with the care deserving of the area. Because of the “small group” identity, we were introduced to highlights of beautiful Italy that would not be available to larger groups, nor would they be available to independent travellers. It provides the opportunity to “get to know” your fellow travellers and share your love for exploring. I highly recommend “Italy with Pleasure” if you are wanting to explore the history and the character of the local people. You will come away with knowledge and fabulous pictures, but more than that you will come away with the feeling of having made new friends.”

“The history of different civilisations over time influencing architecture, agriculture and food, have created a cultural diversity that makes Sicily a very interesting island. From the busy streets of Palermo, the cobbled uphill streets of Erice, the winding, winding road to accommodation in a monastery overlooking a ravine at Ragusa, visiting the Valley of Temples near Agrigento, and from Taormina seeing Byzantine tombs and a 2nd century BC Roman theatre, our experience of Sicily was very varied and rewarding.”

“Believe all that they say in their brochure... family run, hands on and very professional. Their standards are high and they are very responsive to everyone’s needs.”

“We had an amazing trip with Riccardo (our tour guide). Ended up taking this tour for our honeymoon, and would do it over 1000x. Everything was planned to perfection. We are excited to do another one with Malcolm and his team soon!”

“Malcolm and Antonella are excellent tour guides, and all the dining and wine tasting they arranged on this trip were fantastic. They are very knowledgeable about the local area and had great advice on some side trips. The hotels chosen were well located and locally run. I had a wonderful time!”

“We had a fantastic time on this trip. Ricardo was wonderful and we all really enjoyed his company and knowledge of the area. Another fantastic Italy with Pleasure trip. I love this company for providing a small, private tour atmosphere, with attention to detail on food, logistics and educational site visits. You guys are amazing. Until next time.... thanks so much.”

“We had a most wonderful time and a most wonderful tour guide, Mark. He was personable, knowledgeable and accommodating. We would love him as our guide on another tour. Each town we visited had another guide specific to the that history and culture. Everything was beautifully planned out and well executed. Our room was beautiful, our view was breathtaking, we could not have asked for a more memorable trip!!”

Turin, with its fine, aristocratic atmosphere, old-world sophisticated shops, grand boulevards and palaces, leafy parks, and art galleries, actually leads a double life as also the centre of European industrial technology.

This afternoon we have a guided tour of Turin including a visit to the Cathedral, containing the Chapel of the Holy Shroud and the Palazzo Reale, seat of the Savoy Royal Family from 1660 until the unification of Italy.

Day 21: Verbania

Accommodation: Casa Immacolata Verbania Pallanza or similar.

We cruise to the 3 Borromean Islands on the western side of Lake Maggiore, directly opposite Stresa. The islands take their name from the aristocratic Borromean family who transformed the islands of Bella and Madre into grand, luxurious residences. The third island, named “dei Pescatori” after its age-old fishing community, was left to continue its traditional way of life. We will enjoy guided tours of the islands Bella and Madre, including a visit to the palaces and gardens. After some leisure time, we return to our accommodation to pack and have our final dinner together.

Our tour ends today after breakfast with a transfer to Milan. Arrival at Malpensa airport will be approximately 9.30 am and the coach will continue into the city centre with a drop-off at approximately 11:30am.

The italians.

John Hooper

Sublime and maddening, fascinating yet baffling, Italy is a country of endless paradox and seemingly unanswerable riddles.

John Hooper's marvellously entertaining and perceptive new book is the ideal companion for anyone seeking to understand contemporary Italy and the unique character of the Italians. Looking at the facts that lie behind - and often belie - the stereotypes, his revealing book sheds new light on many aspects of Italian life: football and Freemasonry, sex, symbolism and the reason why Italian has twelve words for a coat hanger, yet none for a hangover.

The Pursuit of Italy: A History of a Land, its Regions and their Peoples

David Gilmour

Visiting a villa built by Lorenzo de Medici outside Pisa, David Gilmour fell into conversation about the unification of Italy with a distinguished former minister: '"You know, Davide," he said in a low conspiratorial voice, as if uttering a heresy, "Garibaldi did Italy a great disservice. If he had not invaded Sicily and Naples, we in the north would have the richest and most civilized state in Europe." After looking cautiously round the room he added in an even lower voice, "Of course to the south we would have a neighbour like Egypt."'

Was the elderly Italian right? Was the unification of Italy a mistake? The Pursuit of Italy traces the whole history of the Italian peninsula in a wonderfully readable style, full of well-chosen stories and observations from personal experience, and peopled by many of the great figures of the Italian past, from Cicero and Virgil to Dante and the Medici, from Cavour and Verdi to the controversial political figures of the twentieth century. The book gives a clear-eyed view of the Risorgimento, the pivotal event in modern Italian history, debunking the influential myths which have grown up around it.

Gilmour shows that the glory of Italy has always lain in its regions, with their distinctive art, civic cultures, identities and cuisine. The regions produced the medieval communes and the Renaissance, the Venetian Republic and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, two of the most civilized states of European history. Their inhabitants identified themselves not as Italians, but as Tuscans and Venetians, Sicilians and Lombards, Neapolitans and Genoese. This is where the strength and culture of Italy still comes from, rather than from misconceived and mishandled concepts of nationalism and unity.

This wise and enormously engaging book explains the course of Italian history in a manner and with a coherence which no one with an interest in the country could fail to enjoy.

The Borgias

Christopher Hibbert

The name Borgia is synonymous with the corruption, nepotism, and greed that were rife in Renaissance Italy.

The powerful, voracious Rodrigo Borgia, better known to history as Pope Alexander VI, was the central figure of the dynasty. Two of his seven papal offspring also rose to power and fame - Lucrezia Borgia, his daughter, whose husband was famously murdered by her brother, and that brother, Cesare, who served as the model for Niccolo Machiavelli's The Prince. Notorious for seizing power, wealth, land, and titles through bribery, marriage, and murder, the dynasty's dramatic rise from its Spanish roots to its occupation of the highest position in Renaissance society forms a gripping tale.

Erudite, witty, and always insightful, Hibbert removes the layers of myth around the Borgia family and creates a portrait alive with his superb sense of character and place.

The Land Where Lemons Grow: The Story of Italy and its Citrus Fruit

Helena Attlee

Travellers have always been thrilled by the sight of citrus in Italy, where dark leaves and bright fruit seem to charge the landscape, making the trees symbols of a sun-soaked, poetic vision of the country. Citrus also holds a special place in the Italian imagination, and in The Land Where Lemons Grow, Helena Attlee sets out to explore its curious past and its enduring resonance in Italian culture. The Land Where Lemons Grow is a heady mixture of travel writing, history, horticulture and art; a unique journey through Italy's cultural, culinary and political past. Helena Attlee is the author of four books about Italian gardens, and others on the cultural history of gardens around the world. Helena is a Fellow of the Royal Literary Fund and has worked in Italy for nearly 30 years.

The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy

Jacob Buckhards and Peter Murray

For nineteenth-century Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt, the Italian Renaissance was nothing less than the beginning of the modern world - a world in which flourishing individualism and the competition for fame radically transformed science, the arts, and politics. In this landmark work he depicts the Italian city-states of Florence, Venice and Rome as providing the seeds of a new form of society, and traces the rise of the creative individual, from Dante to Michelangelo. A fascinating description of an era of cultural transition, this nineteenth-century masterpiece was to become the most influential interpretation of the Italian Renaissance, and anticipated ideas such as Nietzsche's concept of the 'Ubermensch' in its portrayal of an age of genius.

Art in Renaissance Italy

John T. Paoletti and Gary M. Radke

With a freshness and breadth of approach that sets the art in its context, this book explores why works were created and who commissioned the palaces, cathedrals, paintings, and sculptures. It covers Rome and Florence, Venice and the Veneto, Assisi, Siena, Milan, Pavia, Genoa, Padua, Mantua, Verona, Ferrara, Urbino, and Naples. Chapters are grouped into four chronological parts, allowing for a sustained examination of individual cities in different periods. "Contemporary Scene" boxes provide fascinating glimpses of daily life and "Contemporary Voice" boxes quote from painters and writers of the time. Innovative and scholarly, yet accessible and beautifully presented, this book is a definitive work on the Italian Renaissance. This revised edition contains around 200 new pictures and nearly all colour images.

Italy Tours

Tour Italy Rome Colosseum

Your own personal Renaissance

Italians love to surround themselves with beauty, and it shows. A more fitting country could not have been designed by Michelangelo himself: from medieval hilltop towns to sun-drenched Mediterranean islands, Italy is sublime. Icons are so numerous it's difficult to choose. Some are entire cities: Venice, Florence, and Rome are works of art in themselves, and Italy has played host to arguably the greatest collection of art, architecture, and artists the world has ever seen. Home to more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country, Italy is nothing if not cultured; an education was once considered incomplete until one spent time in Italy. Today, this tradition continues, as visitors from around the world come to surround themselves with beauty and immerse themselves in la dolce vita. Viva Italia!

Editor’s Pick: What a Life Tours – Skip-the-line Vatican Small Group Tour

Price: Adults from 99 euros (about $108); kids from 94 euros (around $102) Duration: 3 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Laura Itzkowitz , a freelance journalist based in Rome, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. What a Life Tours – Skip-the-line Vatican Small Group Tour was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

One of the largest – and most crowded – landmarks in the world, the Vatican Museums actually comprises 26 museums, plus various chapels and galleries, so while it’s a must-see attraction, it can be an overwhelming place to visit. The engaging guide leading this skip-the-line tour brought us straight to the highlights, starting with the Pinecone Courtyard and ending in St. Peter’s Basilica , where she showed us Michelangelo’s Pietà and explained why it’s the only work the artist actually signed.

Along the tour, you’ll see masterpieces from the Vatican Museums’ collection, including the ancient statue of Laocoön and his sons; the Belvedere Torso, which inspired Michelangelo; Greek Cross Hall; and the Round Hall, which contains a monumental bronze statue of Hercules. Other highlights include the Gallery of Candelabra; the Gallery of Tapestries; the Gallery of Maps, where the guide pointed out some fun facts about Italy in the 1600s; and the Sistine Chapel. Talking isn’t allowed in the Sistine Chapel, so the guide explained Michelangelo’s frescoes at the beginning of the tour. Our guide shared a deep knowledge of the artworks, and delivered her commentary with a sense of humor. However, the guide didn’t bring us to the Raphael Rooms; if this is a priority for you, you may want to book a different tour.

Tours generally operate Monday through Saturday; the first tour begins at 9:30 a.m. In addition to its variety of Vatican tours, the company also offers tours of the Colosseum and daylong tours of Rome.

Vatican Museums tour

Why we love it:

  • Groups are capped at 12 or fewer participants.
  • After the tour, stroll down Via della Conciliazione to capture perfectly framed photos of St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • For a nice lunch nearby, book a table at Ristorante Arlù, a family-run eatery that’s been open since 1959. If the weather is nice, ask for a table outside on the charming cobblestone street.
  • Prati, the neighborhood surrounding the Vatican, is popular for shopping, especially along Via Cola di Rienzo. Stop by il Sellaio di Serafini for a handmade leather bag, or Castroni for espresso and other gourmet foods to bring home.

The Ultimate Guide to Umbria: Weather, Cuisine, and Culture

Jun 5, 2024 | Italy Travel Tips , Travel , Travel Tips for Italy , Umbria, Italy

umbria travel guide

Umbria, or the “Green Heart of Italy,” is an often overlooked hidden gem region. With spectacular rolling hills, hundreds of miles of vineyards, and lush forests, it’s easy to see why Umbria has earned this nickname.

Unlike the bustling tourist hubs of Italy, the far-off corners of Umbria still offer a serene and authentic experience, a true reflection of the Italian way of life. Here, you can meander through medieval towns frozen in time, explore ancient Etruscan ruins, and indulge in cuisine like you’ve never tasted before.

Umbria is steeped in history, with roots that trace back to the Etruscans and Romans. Its towns and cities are living museums, where ancient walls, grand cathedrals, and charming piazzas tell stories of another time.

While many know the region for the town of Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis, and for the Perugina Chocolate factory, this lesser-traveled region of Italy has so much more to offer than meets the eye.

Umbria Geography & Provinces

Located in Central Italy and bordering Tuscany, Lazio, and Marche, Umbria is one of a few completely landlocked Italian regions. Even without a coastline, it is still one of Italy’s most beautiful regions, with stunning verdant mountains as the backdrop to a wine-tasting or truffle hunt.

The region is split into two provinces, Perugia and Terni, with Perugia covering much of the Eastern side. The capital city of Perugia is in the center North of the region, with the famous town of Assisi just a 30-minute drive away.

Gubbio, home to the world’s largest Christmas tree, is in the North of the region, while Terni, home to the world’s tallest manmade waterfall, is in the South.

Lago Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy, is situated in the West near the Tuscan border. Many small villages line the lakeside, and there are even historic Etruscan castles, such as Castiglione del Lago.

Should I visit Umbria or Tuscany?

When travelers think of Italy, Tuscany often comes to mind with its rolling hills, vineyards, and historic towns. However, just a little to the southeast lies Umbria, a region that offers all the charm of Tuscany and more, and if you know where to go Umbria can be a great respite from the hoards of tourists that Tuscany attracts.

Known for its picturesque landscapes and famous destinations like Florence, Siena, and Pisa, Tuscany attracts millions of tourists each year. Just last summer there were more tourists in Tuscany than the residents that live there! While its beauty is undeniable, its popularity all too often leads to crowded streets, busy attractions, and a more commercialized feel. Not to mention the negative effects that over-tourism has on the average local and cost of living.

Umbria, on the other hand , away from popular cities like Assisi, Montefalco, and Perugia, offers equally breathtaking landscapes with rolling hills, lush valleys, and serene lakes, but with a fraction of the tourists. The region’s unspoiled beauty allows for a more peaceful and authentic experience. You can explore charming towns without jostling through throngs of tourists, making your visit more intimate and enjoyable. In addition to the fact that by choosing Umbria over Tuscany, your presence will help the local economy while helping ease the pressure of over-tourism in Italy’s most frequented regions and cities.

When Should You Visit Umbria? – Weather and Crowds

There’s truly not a “bad” time to visit Umbria! Unlike other regions of Italy, much of the region hasn’t been overrun by tourism. The weather is chilly in the winter, mild and temperate in the spring and fall, and warm to hot in the summers, often mild enough for enjoying outdoor festivals.

In the Spring, flowers line the hilltops making the region an explosion of color. In the summertime, many famous festivals take place, such as Infiorata in Spello or the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia. Learn more about Italy’s best cultural festivals here!

When winter arrives, the temperatures drop as the holidays approach, meaning tourist crowds largely thin out for much of the region. However, Gubbio is home to Italy’s Largest Christmas tree and a bustling Christmas Market, which is definitely worth a visit!

Our favorite time to visit Umbria by far, though, is in the fall harvest season. There is no greater beauty than watching a golden sunset over the rolling vineyards. The fall is when you will get the opportunity to see the heart of the region in its winemaking and enjoy autumn’s spectacular seasonal dishes.

That’s exactly why we host our Italy Uncorked tour in Umbria exclusively in September and October. Visitors with us experience an exclusive welcome wine-tasting evening, Umbrian organic farm visits, and a private honey-making experience with a biodynamic renowned beekeeper, followed by lunch in an ancient Abbey! With so many wonderful dishes to savor, it’s a tour that will delight any food and wine lover whether it’s your first trip to Italy or one of many!

Umbria Cuisine & Wine

Known for its farm-to-table philosophy, Umbria’s cuisine celebrates fresh, local ingredients prepared with time-honored techniques. As one of the only Italian regions without a coastline, many of the famous dishes are centered around meat, vegetables, or legumes.

Torta al Testo

Torta al Testo is a traditional Umbrian flatbread often compared to focaccia but uniquely its own. It is typically sliced and filled with a variety of delicious ingredients, such as prosciutto, local cheeses, or grilled vegetables. It makes for a perfect snack or light meal, and the best of this dish is often found at local markets from street vendors.

Black Truffles

Umbria is famed for its truffles, particularly the prized black truffles from Norcia and white truffles found in the region’s woodlands. These aromatic fungi are a gourmet delicacy, adding a rich and earthy flavor to dishes. Since Umbria is Italy’s largest truffle-hunting region, the ingredient is more readily available in all seasons.

Truffles are often shaved over pasta, risotto, or eggs, infusing the dish with their distinctive aroma. Many restaurants in Umbria have special menus featuring seasonal truffle dishes.

Did you know that Norcia, Umbria, is also the pork capital of Italy? Porchetta is a savory, boneless pork roast seasoned with garlic, rosemary, fennel, and other herbs. The meat is slow-roasted until the outside is crispy and the inside is tender and juicy.

This meat is sliced and served in sandwiches, often at local markets and food festivals. Other pork-based meats from Norcia include corallina, capocollo, mazzafegato, and coppa di testa.

Castelluccio Lentils

The lentils from Castelluccio, a small village in the Sibillini Mountains, are renowned for their quality and unique taste. These small, tender lentils have a delicate flavor and hold their shape well when cooked.

The lentils are often featured in hearty soups and stews, paired with sausages or simply dressed with olive oil and herbs. They are a staple in Umbrian cuisine and a perfect comfort food.

Pecorino Cheese

Pecorino is a hard, salty cheese made from sheep’s milk and a staple in Umbrian cuisine. The region produces several varieties, each with its own distinct flavor profile.

Often grated over pasta dishes, served with honey and walnuts, or simply enjoyed on its own with a glass of local wine. The aged versions, known as Pecorino stagionato, have a sharper taste and are particularly delicious.

Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

Sagrantino is a robust red wine native to Montefalco, known for its deep color and rich, tannic flavor. It is made from the Sagrantino grape, which is indigenous to the region and is considered one of Italy’s finest red wines. According to some studies, this may be the “healthiest” wine with the most antioxidants.

Love wine? Then you should know that Italy Uncorked is our only tour where all meals are included and has the most wine experiences out of all the trips you can join us on ! Enjoy all of Umbria’s top cuisine and have that “best meal of your life” moment with every meal and never worry about making a dinner reservation.

Notable Destinations & Towns in Umbria, Italy

Assisi is one of Umbria’s most renowned destinations. It is the famed birthplace of St. Francis, one of Italy’s patron saints. This small town perched on a hill offers a deep sense of peace and spirituality alongside breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

The Basilica of St. Francis is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and many visit for religious tours each year.

Gubbio is one of the oldest towns in Umbria, with roots dating back to pre-Roman times. It’s known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, steep streets, and vibrant traditions. The Gubbio Roman Theatre is one of Italy’s best-preserved ancient theatres and is still used for shows today. And Gubbio’s medieval town center was featured in the original Romeo and Juliet film!

Perched on a volcanic rock, Orvieto is a striking town known for its magnificent cathedral, underground tunnels, and exquisite wine.

Beneath the town lies a labyrinth of Etruscan tunnels and caves. Guided tours offer a fascinating journey through these ancient passages, revealing wells, cisterns, and storage rooms – it’s a great spot to visit after our Italy Uncorked tour!

Terni, often known as the “City of Lovers” due to its association with St. Valentine and the home of the Basilica of St. Valentine, offers a mix of industrial history and natural beauty.

The town is close to Marmore Falls, one of the tallest manmade waterfalls in the world, built by ancient Romans. It is a breathtaking sight to see from many vantage points.

Thinking about visiting Italy’s Green Heart? If you’re a foodie or a wine lover, we have the perfect option for you.

Our Italy Uncorked tour includes all meals and experiences in Umbria and the Marche region exclusive to our guests, including a bespoke underground cave tour, a UNESCO heritage site that is the most well-preserved Renaissance Palace in the Marche region, and three wine tastings across both regions.

When is the best time to visit?

Late fall to early spring (October to April): Avoid Rome in July and August unless you can handle heat and humidity with temperatures reaching high 80s°F (26.6°C). Spring and fall offer perfect conditions with temperatures 60 - 70 °F ( 15.5 - 21°C), but the trade-off is peak crowds and prices.

Instead, visit during the off-season months of October through April, when you’ll trade shorter opening hours for fewer crowds. Winter is crisp, but nothing a light coat can’t handle.

Rome is full of churches and places of worship, so dress neatly and respectfully — cover bare shoulders and refrain from wearing short skirts or shorts when sightseeing.

Meals should be savoured and enjoyed, not eaten on the go while walking.

Italians take their coffee culture seriously. Milk-based coffee beverages are considered breakfast, so don’t order them after 11 a.m. — stick to espressos instead. Coffee is also meant to be enjoyed as a digestive after a meal.
