The Smashing Pumpkins Are Coming To Australia For A Massive Tour… And A Pro Wrestling Showcase

The Smashing Pumpkins Are Coming To Australia For A Massive Tour… And A Pro Wrestling Showcase

Chris Singh

Legendary rock bands The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane’s Addiction are coming to Australia for a tour across April 2023. With locals Amyl & The Sniffers on support duties, the two pioneering bands will pack no less than ten shows into an extensive schedule, kicking off in Wollongong and ending with an outdoor concert on the Gold Coast.

And, well, it’s not your typical concert either. The tour is fashioned more as a festival because Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan will also be peppering in some wrestling matches between his NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia), working in a line-up that includes themselves, Jane’s Addiction, Amy & The Sniffers, glam-rock band Battlesnack, RedHook and a few local openers.

There is no indication as to whether or not the ring will also serve as the stage for these bands. Although that’s unlikely given the roadies would have to work double time as the day switches between live music and live wrestling.

The Smashing Pumpkins will be the headliners considering this is their The World Is A Vampire Festival, which they have been touring around the world to showcase the second act of their ambitious 33-song rock opera, ATUM , which is conceived as the sequel to seminal classic Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness .

The Smashing Pumpkins will tour Australia with Jane's Addiction and Amyl & the Sniffers this April

smashing pumpkins 2022

  • X (formerly Twitter)

Strap in, one of the biggest rock'n'roll tours of the year has just been announced.

In April, The Smashing Pumpkins will return to Australia with an enormous cast of guests that includes alt-rock pioneers Jane's Addiction , Aussie heroes Amyl & the Sniffers , and up and comers Redhook and Battlesnake .

On top of this, each show will feature professional wrestling matches between Billy Corgan's NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia).

Across multiple massive shows in cities and regional areas, rock fans will be treated to a hugely entertaining program.

Update 3/3:  There's been some changes to the tour, introducing new shows to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne while relocating shows originally hosted in Wollongong, Penrith, and Newcastle. Read on for more.

The Smashing Pumpkins are one of the defining bands of modern rock'n'roll.

The immense influence and quality of their early material is undeniable, records like Gish , Siamese Dream , and Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness among some of the most vital rock records of the 90s until their split in 2000.

The band has lived on well beyond that, with Billy Corgan forming a new version of the band in 2006 and keeping it relatively active ever since.

His latest iteration of the band features original members James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin, and they spent plenty of 2022 belting out career spanning sets across the USA with incredible guests.

It's finally Australia's turn, with Corgan bring the Pumpkins back for the first time since they played Soundwave in 2015, and the first time this line-up of the band has played down here since reforming.

Jane's Addiction were one of the most influential forces in alternative rock in the late-80s and early-90s.

Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery cooked up some of the most enduring songs of that time in 'Been Caught Stealing', 'Jane Says', 'Stop!' and more, and they'll release their long-awaited fifth album – and first in 12 years – sometime in 2023.

The band have played unforgettable slots at festivals like Big Day Out, Soundwave, and Splendour In The Grass on their most recent Australian visits, and we've no doubt they will pull out all the stops for these shows too.

Josh Klinghoffer (formerly of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers)  has been filling in for Navarro at recent US shows as the guitarist recovers from a bad case of COVID. No word on who'll play the Aussie dates yet.

What more can be said about Amyl & the Sniffers that hasn't already? The Melbourne-based punks have taken the world by storm and when you see them live, you'll understand why. They are, without question, one of the great live acts on the planet right now.

Sydney heavy rockers Redhook , led by the awesome Emmy Mack, and seven-piece shredders Battlesnake round out the line-ups, and the aforementioned wrestling battles will take place between sets.

Brisbane fans can now join in the action with an outdoors show at Eatons Hill Hotel on Saturday 15 April.

Bad news for NSW, the Wollongong and Penrith shows have been cancelled, "due to circumstances out of our control," promoters note. Ticket holders are eligible to transfer to a newly-added second Sydney show at Hordern Pavilion on Wednesday 19 April.

As a result, the Newcastle Entertainment Centre show has been moved to Saturday 29 April.

Lastly, fans in Mornington should note that the Hastings Foreshore event is "now uninsurable and we've had no choice but to move it," promoters explain in a statement. "Due to the Mornington Council updating their Environmental Plan on February 7, that states ANY wet weather can lead to an event being shut down at their discretion.

All Hastings tickets are valid at Port Melbourne (on Sat 22 April) or Ballarat (Sun 23 April).

Catch this enormous day of music (and wrestling) at the following stops.

Tickets are on sale from midday Friday.

Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, the world is a vampire is australia's new festival led by the smashing pumpkins and jane's addiction.

Also on the bill: Amyl and The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake, plus professional wrestling.

The World Is a Vampire Is Australia's New Festival Led by The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction

Talk about a perfect name: if you're going to start a new music festival that revolves around The Smashing Pumpkins, then calling it The World Is a Vampire is a no-brainer. This exciting addition to Australia's festival scene is being sent to happily drain all your attention this autumn, when it heads around the country with one helluva bill. Billy Corgan and his band members will be there, of course, and so will fellow alt-rock legends Jane's Addiction.

Today is the greatest day for news about 90s favourites hitting our shores, clearly. And yes, you can expect the rollicking classic that is 'Bullet with Butterfly Wings' to get a spin — the whole fest is named after it, after all. As well as hearing fellow Pumpkins greats such as 'Disarm', '1979', 'Tonight, Tonight', 'Today' and 'Zero', the Perry Farrell-led Jane's Addiction will be on hand to bust out 'Been Caught Stealing', 'Jane Says' and the likes.

How many 'Zero' shirts will you see at the fest? Oh so many, as at every Pumpkins gig.

Also on the bill: Australia's own Amyl and The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake, plus yet-to-be-announced local acts opening each stop. And this fest has stops. It'll be singing about rage and rats in cages at ten venues, pinballing around New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia — heading to Sydney's Hordern Pavilion, plus Penrith, Newcastle and Wollongong; Port Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula and Ballarat; Bribie Island and the Gold Coast; and the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

If you're a fan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Aussie music, and you know a bit about Billy Corgan's romantic history, you might be crossing your fingers for a wild addition to the bill: The Veronicas. The Australian duo joined the Pumpkins on-stage for 'Eye' back in November 2022 , albeit at the Hollywood Bowl.

Whoever else joins the lineup, they'll feature alongside professional wrestling, with each show including matches between Billy Corgan's NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) and the WAOA (Wrestling Alliance of Australia). Wrestlers will take to the ring in-between the bands — and yes, Corgan does own the alliance that bears his name.

It's currently a stellar time for music icons who first made it big a few decades back touring Australia, with The World Is a Vampire and its killer lineup joining the Modest Mouse- and Slowdive-led Daydream , Fatboy Slim doing his own tour and headlining Groovin the Moo , Ice Cube and Cypress Hill teaming up, Snoop Dogg also heading our way, and Blink-182 stopping by in 2024 — and Red Hot Chili Peppers currently making their way around the nation. Yes, the list goes on, and also includes Vengaboys .

Smashing Pumpkins Launch 2024 Tour with U2 Cover, New Guitarist: Videos + Setlist

The post Smashing Pumpkins Launch 2024 Tour with U2 Cover, New Guitarist: Videos + Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

Smashing Pumpkins  kicked off their 2024 world tour (grab tickets here) over the weekend with an opening performance in Birmingham, England, which saw them play hits, new cuts, rarities, covers, and more. It also marked the debut of the band’s new touring guitarist Kiki Wong.

Part of a leg of UK tour dates with Weezer, the opening night saw Smashing Pumpkins get things started by playing a recording of “ATUM,” the first track on the band’s recently-released concept album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts . From there, they performed a few older songs, and then covered U2’s 1991 song, “Zoo Station,” live for the very first time.

Get Smashing Pumpkins Tickets Here

The night also saw Smashing Pumpkins perform a few of their biggest hits, like “Today,” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” and “1979,” which must be a sign that the band still enjoys them, considering that Billy Corgan recently said that he feels no obligation to do the hits and won’t “play any songs I don’t want to play.” The band also pulled out a few bust-outs, like the first performances of “Thru the Eyes of Ruby” since 2015 and “Panopticon” since 2013, plus “Gossamer” and “Birch Grove.”

Throughout the night, too, Smashing Pumpkins’ sound was augmented by their new touring guitarist Kiki Wong, who was chosen after the band put out a call for someone to replace previous guitarist Jeff Schroeder this past January. Later, they revealed that they received over 10,000 submissions, but Wong rose to the top.

Watch videos of the tour kickoff and check out the full setlist below.

Following their UK/European jaunt with Weezer, Pumpkins will join Green Day as the main support for the North American leg of their “Saviors Tour.” Get tickets to all of the band’s upcoming tour dates here .

Smashing Pumpkins Kick Off Tour With New Guitarist: See The Setlist

Smashing Pumpkins kicked off their 2024 tour over the weekend in Birmingham, England, marking their first show with new touring guitarist Kiki Wong . Though the performance was in support of Weezer on their European tour, the band still managed a 25-song set that included their first ever live cover of U2 's "Zoo Station."

Billy Corgan and company played plenty of hits; however, they also sprinkled in some rarities including the first performances of “Thru the Eyes of Ruby” since 2015 and “Panopticon” since 2013, as well as “Gossamer” and “Birch Grove.”

The band will continue touring Europe with Weezer before heading back to North America to support Green Day on their Saviors tour and play a headlining tour throughout the country this summer. Smashing Pumpkins Kick Off Tour With New Guitarist: See The Setlist

"For 90s alt rock fans, this is the holy grail": Weezer and The Smashing Pumpkins kick off their UK tour with setlists that are a Gen-X wet dream

Live debuts, surprise covers and all the alt rock hits you could ever possibly want - weezer and smashing pumpkins kick off their uk tour in birmingham.

Rivers Cuomo/Billy Corgan

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

God bless nostalgia. With touring becoming ever-more expensive and punters being forced to make tactical decisions about what shows to go to, it's hardly surprising we're enjoying a golden age of nostalgia-driven package tours that perfectly cater to Fans Of A Certain Vintage, offering just a little more bang for your buck with the added bonus of bringing together the kinds of bills you could only fantasize about 25 years ago. Enter, The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer , two of the scene's most enduring - if creatively mecurial - forces uniting for a massive night out that's packing arenas throughout the UK, kicking off at Birmingham's Utilita Arena.

For 90s alt rock fans, this is the holy grail and the ultimate testament to how diverse the Gen-X alt gold rush was both stylistically and philosophically. In the left corner, Billy Corgan's maximalist, artful yet arch art metal operas, where no concept is too grandiose and everything from classical music to shoegaze can be deployed at the drop of a hat. On the right, Rivers Cuomo's penchant for pure, simple rock with no ostentation, a collision of power pop choruses and massive riffs that somehow blurred the lines between punk, 70s rock/heavy metal and indie. They might inhabit the same broad church of alternative rock, but they sing from very different hymn sheets.

Even the setlists suggest a wildly different approach. Arriving to a hale My Name Is Jonas, Weezer go for broke with an all-killer, no filler set that burns through the likes of Beverly Hills, Dope Nose, Undone - The Sweater Song and Pork And Beans back-to-back, each song stripped to its bare essentials and played with an endearingly infectious enthusiasm that betrays the band's punk leanings. Not so much in the spotlight as inhabiting the space around it, Weezer are from the fame-shunning stock as Nirvana and it shows in a largely spartan stage set-up, colourful lights and a a spotlight-encrusted Weezer logo the only indulgences that mark the show apart from a club performance or a particularly intense jam session in the garage.

Needless to say, it's magic . Armed with some of the catchiest hooks in rock history, the crowd respond to the blitzkrieg of anthems with a relentless enthusiasm that charges the room with an electric buzz, Weezer bursting from one song to another with barely any pauses. In turn, although Rivers doesn't address the crowd for much of the set, his wry humour comes through in little bits like singing " Bir-Min-g-HAM, that's where I want to be! " into Beverley Hills , or otherwise slipping choruses from other songs into the set - most notably Troublemaker 's chorus into Dope Nose.

" This is a dream come true!" Rivers breathlessly says, by this point well over halfway through the night after an extra-bouncy rendition of The Good Life. "Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins together! Now we're gonna play a song written by Billy Corgan," he teases, before the band hammer out a colossal cover of Hole's Celebrity Skin, somehow adding to their already impossible arsenal of arena-friendly tunes.

Speaking to Kerrang! ahead of their UK tour, Billy Corgan suggested that Smashing Pumpkins had no interest in just churning out the hits. But, as the first show of The World Is A Vampire shows, they've clearly found some room for compromise, still belting out everything from Today to 1979, Tonight, Tonight and Bullet With Butterfly Wings to massive roars of approval.

Granted, their approach - and accompanying aesthetic - is still vastly different to Weezer's; the buzzing riff of The Everlasting Gaze sees the Pumpkins stride out one-by-one, while the song is given extra metallic heft that shows they approach from a very different side of alternative music.

It's not lost on the Pumpkins that they're in the birthplace of heavy metal; before they arrive the PAs blare out a non-stop rotation of Judas Priest songs, and partway through the set guitarist James Iha can't help himself as he starts to strum Sweet Leaf, Corgan joining in by singing a verse. "The Smashing Pumpkins, in the home of heavy metal..." he muses. "I never thought to write a love song about weed. But that's the magic of Birmingham!"

In turn, the Pumpkins' sound is amped up with seemingly every riff and drum-fill afforded some extra bombast, songs often ending in squalling solos as every member jams with a sense of zeal that could only come from opening night excitement. Granted, there are some metal clichés that could have been dropped - a drum solo capping off U2 cover Zoo Station three songs in feels overly indulgent - but the overall atmosphere is one of utter enthusiasm and joy that only gets amplified when the classics do start rolling in.

Today is tackled with the same bombast the band applied to Doomsday Clock before it, utterly explosive in both performance and sound, while the likes of Tonight, Tonight, Ava Adore and Disarm come with the gorgeous grandeur that embodied Pumpkins' classic releases.

True to Corgan's promise that Pumpkins don't want mindless nostalgia, their new songs prove equally massive; the stomping riff of single Beguiled has heads banging enthusiastically as Corgan's kid comes running out to dance along to the song, while Empires deploys a guitar tone that could just as easily pop up in a Ministry song.

With a hefty 24-song set, the Pumpkins cover the majority of their three-decade-plus career, bringing things home with a sense of literal fuzzy nostalgia as Cherub Rock buzzes along, inducing tonal whiplash when Zero kicks up immediately after and Corgan gnashes his way through the song, holding the mic out as the crowd roar along to every lyric, Corgan's invitation to go for a ride still as thrilling as it was 30 years ago.

The Smashing Pumpkins in 3Arena review: Scintillating, self-absorbed, inspired – and loud

At times you think this might be endurance test but billy corgan and crew produce victory in the end.

3arena, dublin.

Several hours before leading the Smashing Pumpkins through a bulldozing set at 3Arena in Dublin , the group’s frontman, Billy Corgan , poses for a photo alongside the statue of Thin Lizzy singer Phil Lynott that stands just off Grafton Street. The hometown tributes continue at the concert where, three songs in, the 1990s arena heavyweights uncork a cover of U2 ′s trans-European dirge, Zoo Station.

“That’s a song by a local band,” says Corgan, though, judging by the reception, the deep dive into the U2 catalogue has gone over the heads of an audience which didn’t come out for an evening of Bono homage.

There’s plenty of nostalgia earlier when this double-headliner tour opens with a hit-packed turn by nerd-rock megastars Weezer. But Corgan and the Pumpkins steer a different course across a night by turns inspired, indulgent, self-absorbed and scintillating.

An Irishwoman in New York: I’m flattered, but why do Americans love the Irish so much?

[  Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan: ‘Taylor Swift is one of the most gifted pop artists of all time’  ]

The Smashing Pumpkins emerged in the early 1990s just as grunge went mainstream. Yet they were always too weird, obtuse and overwrought to sit comfortably alongside Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Heavy metal and shoegaze were the influences threaded through their 1991 debut Gish. Then came the chart-topping one-two of Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness – classic albums which, 30 years on, have come to define their decade as definitively as everything their peers put out

Both LPs feature prominently in a 120-minute performance. However, Corgan has no interest in pandering to his fan base, and the show presents those old songs in the new context of the Pumpkins recent output.

pic.twitter.com/92nhAFJuIz — William Patrick Corgan (@Billy) June 10, 2024

[  Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam: ‘Music has helped me in survival, in mental health, in dealing with aggression’  ]

First, there will be a sci-fi intro, with strobes and an instrumental flourish from last year’s Atum – a three-disc rock opera that lands somewhere between Pink Floyd’s The Wall, The Sisters of Mercy’s Floodland and Gene Rodenberry’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It’s followed by prog-rock avalanche The Everlasting Gaze off of 2000′s death metal puzzle box of a record, Machina/The Machines of God.

That project marked the break-up of the original Pumpkins line-up. Three of the four have now reunited, and at 3Arena, Corgan plays alongside drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha – that rare sideman more charismatic than the lead singer. They are joined by guitarist Kiki Wong, whom the band recruited from a field of 10,000 applicants – and by Corgan’s two young children who emerged twice, wearing hearing protection, to dance with their dad.

If the scene is heart-warming elsewhere, the Pumpkins are variously mind-expanding and patience-testing. The years fall away for concertgoers of a certain vintage as that U2 cover gives way to Today – a textbook of the classic 1990s indie rock quiet/loud/quiet song structure. And the loud parts truly are loud: if there is an equivalent at 3Arena of cranking it up to 11, then the Smashing Pumpkins have gone there (at moments, it feels they’ve dialled it up to 12).

There are further cheers as the group slaloms through a stately Tonight, Tonight while Corgan relishes his persona of goth curmudgeon during industrial stomper Ava Adore. The newer songs are mostly worth their place, too – particularly if you’re a fan of galactic space rock. Still, there are moments when you wonder if the show might be about to become an endurance test, such as on the never-endingly hoary Gossamer – which starts a glacial funk jam and ends as a Stephen Hawking-style inquiry into the nature of infinite.

But the Pumpkins get the night back on course as a cake is brought out for drummer Chamberlin’s birthday, and they then plunge into Cherub Rock. The first track from Siamese Dream has one of the greatest opening riffs of all time, as a slinging guitar line is suddenly dunked in oceans of fuzz.

The journey has not always been straightforward, but by the night’s end, the Smashing Pumpkins have cracked it with a gig respectful towards their catalogue yet never beholden to it. It is nostalgia done correctly – a greatest hits set with one foot in the present day and its head raised towards the future.

“Someone pinch me… actually don’t, because I want to keep living this dream”: Kiki Wong brings a metal edge to her debut Smashing Pumpkins performance after beating 10,000 guitarists to the gig

In her first show with the alt-rock icons, the Instagram favorite delivers on her quest to bring out the Pumpkins’ heavy side

Kiki Wong and Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins performs at The O2 Arena on June 08, 2024 in London, England.

New Smashing Pumpkins guitarist Kiki Wong – who was picked from a pool of 10,000 applicants – played her first show with the alt-rock heroes on Friday (June 7) in Birmingham, UK, and fan footage showcases how she fits into the lineup.

Throughout a two-hour set that spanned tracks from the Pumpkins’ 1991 debut Gish right up to last year’s triple-album rock opera ATUM , Wong slots right in with fellow guitarists Billy Corgan and James Iha, deploying blazing guitar harmony lines, chunking up riffs and lending texture to the Pumpkins’ multi-layered six-string approach.

And she is clearly loving every moment of it – you can even catch her grinning throughout Today , whose lyrics must have taken on a new meaning that night.

“What an absolute mind-blowing experience it was for @smashingpumpkins first show of the tour at the @utilitaarenabirmingham,” Wong wrote on Instagram after the show.

“I am so overwhelmed with excitement. It was such an honor to play my first arena on guitar with such an incredible group of musicians. Someone pinch me, actually don’t because I want to keep living this dream.”

The Instagram shredder employed a number of metal-leaning electric guitars throughout the show, including two Jackson MJ Series Rhoads models, a PRS Custom, Yamaha Revstar and Zemaitis IGF AC 24 – the same guitar she used for her audition with the band.

Wong also gets her own solo spot during the two-hour performance. As 2023 riff-rocker Empires comes to a close, Corgan yells his bandmate’s name – in response, she fires off a series of whiplash wah runs that showcase her lead chops.

With her metal-forward guitar choices and aggressive playing style, Wong definitely succeeds in her quest to “bring a little bit of that heavy side of Pumpkins out more,” as she told Guitar World last month .

“My voicing will be different and new, and some may not be used to my style,” she said of her approach. “But I hope I can bring a little chunk and dirt to the sound, in the best way possible, without tainting the iconic sound of the Smashing Pumpkins.”

Wong was chosen from a pool of 10,000 applications when the Smashing Pumpkins launched a worldwide search for a new touring member to replace outgoing guitarist Jeff Schroeder.

A post shared by KIKI WONG (@kikiwongo) A photo posted by on

Last week, Billy Corgan opened up on the band’s hiring process for the first time, and what made Wong the right person for the job.

“I wondered if she would fit in, because I knew her as more of a metal guitarist,” he revealed. “So, we talked to her on Zoom – she's such a nice person, and so engaging – then we invited her out to audition.

“We had such a good feeling about her. And then it wasn't that other people weren't as good, but there was something about Kiki's presence and personality and sweetness that we just were really attracted to.

“She just felt like a real breath of fresh air. We love that it's a great opportunity for her. But we also think she's the right person.”
