Tour Description

You will be treated to a special trip by your guide, who is also a fully licensed and professional driver with thorough knowledge of each of the places you will go. There are seven featured highlights during your tour: Trou aux Cerfs volcano, Grand Bassin, Black River Gorges, Alexandra Waterfall, Chamarel Village & Waterfall, Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth, The Rhumerie de Chamarel, and The Curious Corner of Chamarel.

The South Tour is a full-day activity , lasting approximately 8 hours. This tour is completely private. While the above stops are suggested to give you a well-rounded approach to Mauritian southern culture, they by no means encompass every possibility for the tour. You have the final say in deciding where you would like to stop and the duration of your stay. You may even design your own southern tour from the ground up; your driver guide will always be on standby for you.

Grand Bassin , also called Ganga Talao, is a crater lake and features numerous statues and sacred temples that perform daily worship ceremonies, and several annual religious festivals that draw pilgrims from around the island (and world) to this holy spot. The lake is also home to towering trees and friendly wildlife.

Black River Gorges National Park covers roughly two percent of the island’s surface. Many protected species of plants and animals thrive within its steep slopes and shadowed valleys. The park contains a handful of peaceful walking trails. In its southern section lies Alexandra Falls; this breathtaking waterfall sits perched at the apex of a winding scenic road.

To the park’s southwest sits the village of Chamarel . Here, you’ll get a feel for Mauritian culture and its relationship to the island’s natural beauty. Explore the village, swim at the nearby waterfall, or enjoy peaceful dining in one of several eateries. You can witness the rum-making process at the nearby Chamarel Rhumerie, with a sampling of local rums and a fine restaurant available.

The Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth is a 650-million-year-old geological oddity that displays its multihued sands in brilliant contrast under sunny skies. Reflect on the ancient mysteries that must have taken place under the earth’s surface to produce such a unique sight. You may even purchase a glass vial containing all seven colours of sand to commemorate your visit.

Finally, warp your sense of balance and depth among the multitude of optical illusions and interactive puzzles at The Curious Corner of Chamarel . This popular tourist attraction contains many galleries, each with its own peculiar quirk. You may find new perspectives on gravity and perception by the time you leave this fun and popular spot. Upon the conclusion of your tour, your friendly guide will return you to your accommodation while you reflect on your memories of the day.

What is the pickup time? There is no hard starting time. Since this tour is private, you get to choose your own pickup time. We usually recommend starting between 09:00 and 09:30 to give yourself ample time to complete the track.

What do I need to bring? Sunscreen and other sun protection, camera, water, cash to cover activity entry fees at the different locations.

What languages do the driver/guides speak? English, French, Hindi, and other languages upon request.

How does parking work? Who pays the parking fees? Your driver will locate parking and pay the fees.

What's Included?

  • Timely, knowledgeable, licensed local driver/guide will make your day safe and memorable
  • Multilingual guides available who speak English, French, Hindi, and more
  • A variety of family-friendly activities all conveniently contained in one package
  • Completely private tour that can be customized however you choose

Reviews can only be left by Mauritiusly customers after they have completed the south tour.

Absolutely loved the views at Black River Park! Nowhere else on the island did I feel so above it all...literally had my head in the clouds! Alexandra, Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, Chamarel waterfall...this day is all about getting out to explore the sights on this corner of the island. I’d go again in a heartbeat. Thanks to our driver for navigating the roads safely!

Nice variety of nature, dining, and sightseeing some oddities. Our guide told us that the weather in this part of the island can be very dynamic, so I suggest bringing both sunscreen and a rain poncho or sweater. Still, it’s worth it for all you’ll see and learn. My favorite parts were the rum tasting at The Rhumerie in Chamarel and the mind-bending mirrors at Curious Corner.

This tour is a must. If you leave Mauritius without discovering what is on offer here, you’ll do yourself a disservice. From Grand Bassin lake to the streets of Chamarel to the curiosity of Seven Coloured Earth, this tour has something for everyone.

Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to the Northern Isles

Rating : 4.7/5 |  Tour Duration : 8 hours | Check rates here

Although Mauritius boasts many beautiful beaches , the small islets scattered around the mainland also offer some pretty spectacular beaches.

One of the best Mauritius excursions is this full-day catamaran cruise to the Northern isles departing from Grand Baie public beach.

The first stop is Flat Island where you can explore a small hiking trail leading to a lighthouse or swim in the lagoon.

You’ll then have a delicious BBQ lunch on board before heading to Gabriel Island for more swimming and relaxation. The final stop is near Coin de Mire Island for snorkeling among the colorful fish.

I 100% recommend this cruise. Sympathy of the crew, excursion in small groups , background music, arrival ahead of the other catamarans on the islands… we are well isolated and we can enjoy the tranquil paradise landscapes ! The food served is delicious, excellent value for money . Go for it without hesitation. Astrid ( see more reviews )

Full-Day Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs + BBQ Lunch

Rating : 4.7/5 |  Tour Duration : 7 hours | Check rates here

Taking a boat trip to Ile aux Cerfs is another fun Mauritius excursion to add to your itinerary. Located off the east coast of Mauritius , this small private island features pristine white-sand beaches and heaps of water activities like banana boat rides, parasailing, kayaking, and snorkeling.

Tours depart from either Trou D’Eau Douce (east) or Pointe Jerome (southeast) and you’ll even visit a small waterfall along the way.

Absolutely recommend! Even spotted dolphins . Staff, food & drinks are top class . Rarely experienced such good value for money . Immediately again! Henrik ( see more reviews )

A light breakfast will be served before jumping on board and you’ll also get the chance to snorkel in the lagoon. Once you get to the island, you’ll be free to explore on your own. BBQ lunch and drinks are also included.

The tours are available by either catamaran or speedboat .

Dolphin Swim and Whale Watching by Speedboat

Rating : 4.6/5 |  Tour Duration : 5 hours | Check rates here

If you’re looking for a boat trip in Mauritius where you can swim with dolphins, I recommend this highly-rated dolphin swim and whale watching tour .

The boat will depart at 7 a.m from Black River and you’ll get a briefing on how to get close to the dolphins while still respecting their natural environment.

Wow what a fantastic experience . I know the chance of seeing whales was not very high so when we saw so many I was just blown away. I wasn’t sure about swimming with dolphins at first but the skippers were clear about respecting them and how to keep safe for both you and the marine life so I felt comfortable. Rebecca ( see more reviews )

Depending on the season, you might be able to spot some whales as well. Snorkeling gear and drinks are also included in the price.

Le Morne Brabant Guided Hike

Rating : 5/5 |  Tour Duration : 4 hours | Check rates here

If you Google Mauritius, I can guarantee that a picture of Le Morne Brabant mountain with its world-famous underwater waterfall will pop up. While the waterfall is best viewed from a helicopter, hiking to the summit is a much cheaper alternative.

During this hiking tour , your guide will tell you all about the history of the mountain and point out the rare endemic plants.

It was an incredibly beautiful experience! You felt safe and secure at all times . You don’t need any experience for this excursion. The guide “Bryn” makes an incredible effort and pays attention to every participant ! He even takes beautiful photos and videos for free , which you get sent afterwards! 5 out of 5 stars! I can recommend this experience to everyone. Alica ( see more reviews )

You’ll make a few stops along the way before reaching the final viewpoint with the metal cross where you can enjoy unobstructed views of the lagoon and neighboring forests.

Private Guided Tour of the Southwest

Rating : 4.8/5 |  Tour Duration : 7 hours | Check rates here

This South Mauritius excursion is the perfect way to discover the most unique locations in the southwest. I highly recommend this guided tour , especially to first-time visitors since it serves as a great introduction to Mauritius Island.

You’ll visit the colorful sand dunes of the Seven Colored Earth Geopark as well as Chamarel waterfall. Other highlights include Gorges viewpoint, Ganga Talao (also known as Grand Bassin), an important pilgrimage site for the Hindus, Trou aux Cerfs which is a dormant volcano, and Curepipe town.

Very good. We got to see many different beautiful sights, and our driver Noorani was very pleasant, flexible and open to “customize” the tour by driving us where we wanted to go. He did come with us (on foot) at some of the spots, but mostly stayed by the car and waited for us, so we could explore at our own pace – which was very nice, as we didn’t feel like we were on a time schedule. Niclas ( see more reviews )

Lunch, entrance fees, and hotel transfers are included in the price. The tour is available with an English, or French-speaking guide.

Ile aux Benitiers and Dolphin Spotting + BBQ Lunch

Rating : 4.7/5 |  Tour Duration : 6 hours | Check rates here

Another boat tour worth adding to your Mauritius itinerary is this Ile aux Benitiers and dolphin spotting tour . This small island is located on the southwest coast and along with the famous Crystal Rock feature some of the best snorkeling spots on the island.

Was a great experience . Beautiful to watch the dolphins swim. The BBQ was absolutely amazing. The crew too, very friendly and accommodating.  Raphael ( see more reviews )

During the tour, you’ll get the opportunity to spot dolphins at Tamarin bay before heading to Crystal Rock for snorkeling. You’ll then have a BBQ lunch with unlimited drinks and finally, make a stop at Ile aux Benitiers for more swimming.

7 Cascades (Tamarind Falls) Hiking Tour

Rating : 4.8/5 |  Tour Duration : 3 hours | Check rates here

As one of the most impressive waterfalls in Mauritius , a visit to Sept Cascades , also known as Tamarind Falls, is a must for adventurous travelers.

Although it’s called 7 Cascades, there are actually over 12 waterfalls nestled between the lush vegetation, each offering the perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim.

This hiking experience was unbelievable. We visited 5 waterfalls and we were able to take pictures and swim in one of the natural pools. Our guide, Lucas was very helpful showing us the way and explaining the techniques during the hike as certain parts were more difficult than others . Meropi ( see more reviews )

Whether you choose to do the half-day hike or full-day hike , I can guarantee that you’ll be in for a treat during this Mauritius excursion! I mean, the photos below speak for themselves!

Note : This hike requires a moderate level of fitness. The path is very slippery and rocky in some parts, plus it’s very easy to get lost which is why booking a hiking tour with a local guide is the safest option.

Blue Bay Half-Day Snorkeling Trip with Creole Picnic Lunch

Rating : 4.7/5 |  Tour Duration : 4 hours | Check rates here

Blue Bay Marine Park is located in the southeast of Mauritius, near the small fishing village of Mahebourg. It was proclaimed a national park in 1997 and features over 100 species of coral and 200 species of fish.

Great activity to do if you pass by there, the corals are magnificent, you can see a multitude of different fish . Our guide Endy was on top he taught us a lot of things about the island, wonderful activity. Maïmounna ( see more reviews )

During the tour, you’ll visit an old shipwreck and snorkel in the marine park. Afterward, a typical Mauritian lunch of fish, chicken, or vegetable curry and drinks will be served on the island of Ile des Deux Cocos where you’ll also have some free time to relax before another snorkeling session in the lagoon.

Port Louis Street Food Tour

Rating : 4.7/5 |  Tour Duration : 3 hours | Check rates here

What better way to sample the local cuisine than to go on a street food tour of Mauritius? The best place to do just that is the capital city of Port Louis .

From the Caudan Waterfront to the Central Market and Chinatown, you’ll wander around the city with a knowledgeable guide in search of the most delicious Mauritian street foods and at the same time, learn a bit about the history of Mauritius.

The tour was well organized and the guide was funny and friendly ! We got to taste several street food snacks (sweet/savory/fruity) and heard some stories about Mauritius. Pay extra attention to the tiny Port Louis’s oldest patisserie, which you would have never spotted yourself in the city. Super cool!  Anna ( see more reviews )

Some of the foods you’ll try during the tour are dholl puri, faratha, and boulettes (dumplings).

Faratha - flat bread filled with curry

Private Island Tour with Driver and Guide

Rating : 4.8/5 |  Tour Duration : 4-8 hours | Check rates here

If you don’t want to rent a car in Mauritius or join a shared tour, the next best option is to hire a private driver and customize your very own private Mauritius excursion.

I’ve written several travel guides about the best places to visit in Mauritius , so you can just pick and choose and craft your own itinerary.

We hat a really nice day. The Guide (Dhiren) knew a lot to tell about Mauritius and made it a very informative and fun trip all around the Island. He was very punctual and showed us even more than we expected on a full day tour. It was also very comfortable because the car was air conditioned and had wifi on board. If you plan to see the Island with your own schedule then we highly recommend this option! Lily ( see more reviews )

I also recommend picking a specific region for each day so that you don’t spend a lot of time sitting in the car but more time sightseeing.

Another advantage of having a local driver is that you’ll get insider tips about the best places to eat along the way.

Mauritius may be a small island, but it’s absolutely packed with amazing things to do. One of the easiest ways to make the most of your trip is to do a tour.

Most Mauritius tours are one day only, so they can fit flexibly into your itinerary. You can go on an adventure one day and relax on the beach the next. Perfect!

Another great thing about doing a tour is that you can see most of the island without needing to hire a car.

Most tours also offer hotel pickups and drop-offs, making it super easy to get out of your resort and explore.

The best tours and day trips in Mauritius

Without further ado, here are the best ways to tour Mauritius Island.

Mauritius: Wild South West Full-Day Tour

Chamarel seven coloured earth surrounded by trees. It's a must visit location on your Mauritius tours.

  • Length: 8 hours
  • Highlights: Chamarel Waterfall, Seven Coloured Earth, Black River Valley, Grand Bassin

Celebrate the best natural sights, and scenery Mauritius has to offer on a wild landscape tour of the southwest. The great thing about this tour is that you can get picked up and dropped at any hotel on the island.

The itinerary is then a full day of sightseeing, starting at the volcanic crater Trou aux Cerfs with its panoramic views of Mauritius.

Next, you’ll visit the model ship factory in Curepipe and Grand Bassin, a sacred site for Mauritian Hindus – watch out for monkeys!

After a stop at the Black River Gorges National Park, you’ll have lunch and a rum tasting at La Rhumerie Chamarel and then visit what I believe is one of the top highlights of Mauritius – the Seven Coloured Earth.

Similar to Rainbow Mountain in Peru, this area of ground is a naturally occurring phenomenon with multi-coloured earth. It’s an incredible sight!

Make sure you take some time to see the famous cascading Chamarel Waterfall here too.

The last stop is Baie du Cap for a final breathtaking view on your tour.

This tour is small-group. There’s also a private tour version which you can do depending on the size of your group.

You’ll be able to go snorkelling at some amazing coral reefs too!

The great thing about this tour is it’s a small group which means there will be no more than 8 people and 2 skippers. You’ll also get a briefing about how to respect and keep a safe distance from the dolphins you swim with.

On the second half of the tour, you’ll go whale watching and you have a 60% chance of seeing one.

Look out for resident sperm whales all year round and magnificent humpback whales from June to October!

Snorkelling gear per person and soft drinks are included in the price.

Mauritius: Le Morne Mountain UNESCO Eco Hike

View of the rocky and steap Le Morne mountain with a beach and sea below.

  • Length: 4 hours
  • Highlights: Scramble hike, panoramic views, learn about history and conservation

See Mauritius from on high by climbing Le Morne Mountain on this Eco Hike up a UNESCO World Heritage site!

One of the best eco tours in Mauritius, this thrilling adventure takes you 465 metres above sea level, where you’ll admire breathtaking lagoon views and learn about the island’s history.

Start the hike with a 4×4 car journey through private lands where you might spot wildlife such as deer, wild pigs and birds.

You’ll then begin on foot at the North-Western base of the mountain, which will warm you up for the next challenging phase.

At 340 metres above sea level, you’ll reach the first of the four scrambling/climbing sections. Don’t worry; you’ll get a safety briefing, and each stop offers panoramic views and photo opportunities.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking views, and you’ll be able to take a well-earned break before you descend.

Heads up, this is a challenging hike with some scrambling and climbing bits so you’ll need a good level of fitness and stamina.

Make sure you’re wearing good footwear too. It might not be suitable for those who have a fear of heights!

Port Louis: Street Food Tour

View from above of colourful skyscrapers and buildings of Port Louis, Mauritius.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Highlights: Delicious street food, local guide

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a culture is through food which is why I highly recommend this Port Louis Street Food Tour.

This half day tour will allow you to experience Mauritian culinary delights like a local. Your guide will take you through bustling streets to some of the best authentic food stops in the capital that a tourist is unlikely to come across.

Enjoy traditional feasts such as Indo-Mauritian “faratas” (fried dough bread) served with Creole “rougaille, Mauritian dumplings and Franco-Mauritian pastries.

There are eight tastings in total and each one highlights the diversity of Mauritian heritage and culture with its French, Creole, African, Indian and Chinese influences. Look out for the oldest patisserie in Port Louis too!

All food tastings and a bottle of water are included in the price.

Ile aux Aigrettes – Tea Route – Gris Gris Guided Day Tour

Mauritius tours aren't complete without a trip to Ile aux Aigrettes. Pictured, a giant tortoise surrounded by vegetation.

  • Highlights: Nature reserve, giant tortoises, tea factory and museum, lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial house

If you’re a nature lover, Ile aux Aigrettes is an absolute must-visit during your trip to Mauritius. Here, you’ll discover a wild island and protected nature reserve home to rare plants and animals, including the Giant Tortoise.

This full-day Mauritius tour takes you to Ile aux Aigrettes, where you can learn about the ongoing conservation projects on the island and hang out with the giant tortoises that roam free.

You can also find rare birds such as the Pink Pigeon and Mauritius Fody, so it’s a great choice for bird watchers!

Next, you’ll see another side to Mauritian heritage and culture: tea. A Bois Cheri Tea Factory, you’’ learn about the history and production of tea before winding your way through picturesque plantations to a tea-tasting chalet.

Enjoy a selection of teas, admire the views and try a few rum samples in the on-site shop before you leave.

The tour includes a local lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial House, that’s located in a beautiful garden. Finish off with a stop at Gris Gris Beach for dramatic cliff views.

The price of the tour includes hotel pickup, lunch, drinks and Ile aux Aigrettes and Bois Cheri entrance fees.

Don’t forget travel insurance!

At the risk of sounding like a parent, it’s always a good idea to have travel insurance on the off chance something goes wrong when you visit Mauritius.

I currently use Holiday Extras because it has great plans – including electronics cover – at an affordable price point. I’ve recently used them for Mauritius and Jordan and got cheap cover for both!

Final Thoughts: The best Mauritius tours

Chamarel Waterfall in Mauritius surrounded by trees.

Mauritius has plenty of tours, excursions and day trips to suit a range of interests. Whether you would like to spend the day relaxing on a 45-ft catamaran, scrambling up a mountain or sampling the culinary delights of Port Louis, there’s something here for everyone.

I recommend booking in advance to save your spot as they do tend to get sold out fast.

The great thing is that most offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which gives you peace of mind if plans change.

A Brief on Mauritius Tours

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean that lies off the southeast coast of Africa. It sits on 720 square miles of land that is full of beautiful lagoons. It also has 330 km of pristine coastline dotted with beautiful palm-filled beaches. Coral reefs surround most of the coast. These features have earned Mauritius a reputation as one of the world’s best holiday destinations. Consequently, this country offers you a wide range of sightseeing, ecological, nature, and historical, religious and adventurous tours.

Mauritius is an ideal place for such tours because it has a high population that lives in relative harmony and peace. In other words, ethnic and religious groups coexist in a spirit of unity driven by common objectives. One of these objectives is the preservation of their cultural heritage. That means you will experience the rich culture of this great nation because the people who live in it cherish it. These positive attitudes are another reason why tourists like visiting Mauritius.

Sightseeing Tours

The sightseeing tours allow you to enjoy several tourist attractions and are the ultimate choice if you are an adventure lover. You get to see the icons of Mauritius and the perfect spots the country has to offer. These involve visits to the picturesque landscape, scenery, wildlife, and a feel of the local culture. Some of these tours are helicopter and seaplane, 7 coloured earth, Chamarel waterfall, Ebony Forest Reserve in the South.

The north sightseeing attractions bring you to the Citadel Fort, Le Caudan Waterfront, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, and Grand Baie Beach.

Helicopter & Seaplane

If you want to see the beauty of Mauritius island from the sky, you need to get on one of these tours. The most favourite destination for this tour is the underwater waterfall. It is breath-taking, and if you are taking the tour from the north, you get through the Moka mountain range overlooking the Pieter Both and Le Pouce, which are favourite trekking spots of tourists.

Chamarel Attractions & Adventures

Chamarel is a gorgeous site to see in the country. Continue reading, and you will see why?

SEVEN COLOURED EARTH

The seven-coloured Earth is the main attraction with 7 different hues of sands and dunes that have piled over 7500 sq. meter area over the years. It is amazing to see the 7 different soils displayed so vibrantly in such a small space.

RHUMERIE DE CHAMAREL

But for Rebecca and Dan, before you get to the seven-coloured Earth, visit the Rhumerie de Chamarel, where you can taste the local Rhum. Then get yourself a glass of freshly squeezed sugar cane juice & take it to the site, or you can grab a coffee with some nibbles at the site café.

THE WATERFALL

Very nearby is the Chamarel Waterfall. The amazing natural wonder stands at 83m tall. You can even see its power from far away. For an incredible experience, walk to the waterfall’s source or the watchpoint.

EBONY FOREST

The Chamarel adventure also optionally includes the Ebony forest. A jeep ride takes you to the top of the mountain, where the focal attraction is the ebony tree that takes a very long time to grow. The island was home to ebony trees around 1000 years old at its discovery. From the top of the forest, you can see the West Coast. The place is great for spending the morning with your family and enjoying Mauritius more.

CURIOUS CORNER

The curious corner is another attraction in Chamarel that you would not like to miss.

Le Morne Brabant

Another notable destination in Mauritius’ South is Le Morne Brabant. It is a Unesco world heritage site. It is an important part of Mauritius’ history and culture. A basaltic mountain is found on the Peninsula of Le Morne Brabant, surrounded by palm trees. It also has some of the most stunning beaches you’ll ever see. The mountain is considered freedom in Mauritius because enslaved people would go there to escape their oppressed lives. Adventure enthusiasts can hike the mountain even with family.

Ecological Tours

The ecological tour allows you to experience a blend of cultural and cherished adventure. Some such tours involve a visit to the Bois Cheri tea factory, Ile aux Aigrettes & Black River Gorges National Park.

Ile aux Aigrettes

Ile aux Aigrettes, a small coral island, is located 800m off the coast of Mahebourg’s South East coast. The Mauritius Wildlife Foundation designated the island a nature conservation area. It has done an amazing job in removing invasive species from the island to allow for the natural forest to reshape. It is the only dry coastal woodland in Mauritius. The kestrel, pink pigeon, green Gecko, and Aldabra Giant Tortoise are just a few of the rarest birds and animals that live on the island and will amaze you with their beauty.

Historic Tours

This tour takes you through some of Mauritius’s historic sites with a deep heritage. It is a full day of fun and adventure. Examples are Apravasi Ghat, Sugar museum, Château Labourdonnais, Fort Citadel & the Eureka House.

Apravasi Ghat

Apravasi Ghat is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the place where indentured labourers landed in Mauritius to work in sugar cane fields after the abolition of slavery. Make sure you pre-book a guided tour 2 days before. You can see the names of labourers with their photographs and the ships that brought them to the island. It displays the camera used to take 2 photos of every indentured labourer.

Adventure Tours

An adventure tour to Mauritius is memorable as you will have an opportunity to discover historic and breath-taking scenery. They include activities at Vallee des Couleurs, Casela. The last two visits are full of adrenaline-producing activities like zipline, quad biking, walking with big cats, mountain climbing or trekking.

On-water adventure Tours

The journey starts from the west coast, where you can enjoy watching whales and dolphins in their natural habitat while riding in a speed boat or catamaran. Get into your snorkelling attire to swim with wild dolphins. You will need a camera to capture all the memorable events you have experienced. Big game fishing, dolphin watching or swimming, and kite surfing are some to mention in this category.

Religious Tours

As an ancient country, Mauritius is filled with many sacred places. The spiritual journey takes you to some of Mauritius’ holy sites. You get a chance to absorb the history and learn about its significance. Here you get to visit Grand Bassin & the giant statues of Mangal Mahadev & Hindu Goddess Durga, and the Red Church.

Ganga Talao

Ganga Talao. It is a place of pilgrimage for Hindus in Mauritius during the Mahashivratree festival. Several hundred thousand pilgrims converge on Ganga Talao during the festival. If you are in Mauritius during the period of Mahashivratree, make sure you visit Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin.

What tour reserves the East?

5 island tour.

The main attraction of the East is undeniably Ile-aux-cerfs. The island is a center of attraction for many activities, from sightseeing the Grand River South East Waterfall to visiting the other 4-islands comprising Ilot Marianne Nature Reserve, Ile aux Fouqueux Nature Park, Ile aux Aigrettes, Îlot Flamants. The visit is well known as the 5 islands tour.

Guided Tours

Guided tours form an essential part of discovering Mauritius island. Make sure that you have a guide when venturing to certain places. The Tamarin Falls stands out of all as Mauritius special response services have often been deployed to pick up tourists from this region, and you certainly don’t want to get lost here. Gris Gris beach, known for its tranquil scenery, is another place that certainly needs guidance. So is Souillac because of the unstable nature of the waves striking rock flanks?

Hiring a guide also saves you an enormous amount of time. You also get the best out of your visit to Mauritius with a guide better than without one. Make sure to ask lots of questions. As a result, you can choose the best places to eat, visit the best shopping malls or enjoy your night coffee in a cosy environment.

Local Tours

The local tours entail all the north, south and east tours listed above, but more importantly, you may have something in mind when doing such a search on the internet. Such an inquiry brings you to the streets of Port Louis for food tasting or the crafts market of Mauritius, where you can find some local souvenirs. When we talk of the latter, we cannot miss the dodo or even the ship shop in Floreal.

Group Tours

You always get the expertise of a tour guide when you book a group tour with us. The guide gives you all the best ethics to follow in different places and tourist spots. For example, if you are at a religious place like Grand Bassin, you must remove your sandals before entering any Mandirs. For adventure activities, we will advise you on the profiles needed for the different adventures, and we take no risks with our clients. Normally, we give you a bus to travel so that you are a few yards from your loved ones throughout all your tours. As a result, you enjoy the attractions and have fun with each other at places like the curious corner.

Our planning is perfect, and your tour manager will cater to everything you need during any trip or activity. You need not worry if you are in a group of 20 persons or 200 people; we will have every one of you covered. Our utmost priority is customer satisfaction.

Family unearths ‘monster' megalodon tooth while fossil hunting

Palmetto fossil excursions co-owner skye basak said land site hunters are lucky to find even one tooth of this length — 6.5 inches — in their lifetimes, by nicole tan • published june 26, 2024 • updated 3 hours ago.

A Florida family made the find of a lifetime when they unearthed a 6.5-inch megalodon tooth near Charleston, South Carolina , earlier this month.

Paul Columbia and his family of four from Largo, Florida, found the tooth during a fossil hunting expedition with Palmetto Fossil Excursions .

"Can you say MONSTER?!?!" the tour group said in a Facebook post on June 10.

The family had been driving to Tennessee for their son's baseball tournament, according to USA Today, when they decided to stop by South Carolina to hunt for fossils. Little did they know they would discover a tooth belonging to a former apex predator.

The fossil came from a shark about 60 to 65 feet long, Palmetto Fossil Excursions co-owner Skye Basak said.

"I think it was an incredible find," she said. "You're lucky to find a 6-inch [tooth]. You're aiming for a unicorn to find the 6.5-inch."

Megalodon teeth found on land are typically between 2 to 4 inches long, according to Basak. While it is common for divers find larger teeth in the water, she said land site hunters are lucky to find even one tooth of the size the Columbia family found in their lifetimes.

Basak herself found a 7.17-inch megalodon tooth in September 2023, which she said is "literally a unicorn."

"There’s just something about digging through the layers of earth in search of pieces of history that nobody else has ever seen before," she added. "That's a pretty incredible feeling to be slicing through the dirt and suddenly, your shovel meets the blade of something that lived in the ocean three million years ago."

In addition to the megalodon tooth, the family found 30 more teeth belonging to mako sharks and direct megalodon ancestor Otodus angustidens .

The megalodon is the largest shark to have ever roamed the ocean, and its very name means "large tooth," according to the National History Museum . The species went extinct about 3.6 million years ago.

“We could not believe the size, the color or our luck,” Columbia said to the media. “What started as a baseball tournament trip became an experience of a lifetime.”

KIBBUTZ NIR OZ, Israel (AP) — A new kind of tourism has emerged in Israel in the months since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack. For celebrities, politicians, influencers and others, no trip is complete without a somber visit to the devastated south that absorbed the brunt of the assault near the border with Gaza .

Jerry Seinfeld, Elon Musk , Michael Douglas, former presidential candidate Nikki Haley , and Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are a few who have visited, at times posing for photos in front of burned-out homes. Many Israelis, including soldiers and security officials, are also visiting on organized trips.

“It’s our personal story, but it’s also the story of all of the state of Israel,” said Irit Lahav, spokeswoman for Kibbutz Nir Oz, who gives many of the tours.

A quarter of the approximately 400 Nir Oz residents fell victim to the attack. Hamas militants killed more than 20 and kidnapped over 80. In the dining hall, a wall of post office boxes is plastered with stickers — red for killed, black for kidnapped, blue for released.

While it’s uncomfortable to open the community to visitors, she said it’s important for people to “come here and smell the burned smell of death, to imagine your friends or parents here.”

Hamas militants killed around 1,200 people as they rampaged through southern Israel, and kidnapped around 250. Health officials in Hamas-run Gaza say more than 37,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war that followed.

Prior to Oct. 7, Lahav ran a tourism company. Now she has turned those itinerary-building skills to the kibbutz where she grew up. Her tour includes the spot in the fence where Hamas militants stormed the kibbutz, along with small details that humanize the scale of destruction, like the candy eggs that melted when the general store was torched.

Many of the kibbutzim and towns that experienced the worst destruction are closed to the public, accessible only via organized tours like those for dignitaries or celebrities, or by invitation from a resident.

Nir Oz decided that the guides must be residents. Rena Bazar, who lives with most of the community in temporary housing elsewhere, is among those giving tours.

At first, it was difficult to return to Nir Oz. She didn’t like the idea of strangers on the lawns and in the dining hall with its bullet-riddled windows. But eventually, she understood the importance of helping visitors understand not just what happened, but also what life had been like before Oct. 7.

“I want to make it less about the combat and more about the personal stories of people who were there,” Bazar said.

For visiting dignitaries and VIPs, trips to Israel have long included stops at famous religious or cultural sites, such as the Western Wall, Masada, the Sea of Galilee or the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, and the national Holocaust memorial, Yad Vashem. The visits to the battered kibbutzim and border towns are the latest way to build support and solidarity with Israel’s allies abroad.

Other parts of southern Israel are open to the public and encouraging visitors — both foreigners and Israelis from elsewhere.

The city of Sderot runs “resilience tours,” connecting groups with survivors who share their memories of Oct. 7 or highlight cultural or culinary offerings. In contrast to the hardest-hit kibbutzim like Nir Oz, most of Sderot’s residents have returned.

Hen Cohen, the city’s tourism director, estimated that about 200,000 visitors have come during the first half of 2024, compared with 100,000 total in a normal year. Most come via solidarity missions from abroad or are local visitors such as soldiers and police officers on educational tours.

Birthright Israel, an organization that provides 10-day free trips to Israel for Jewish Americans, said that nearly all of the 13,500 participants expected this summer will visit Sderot and the site of the Nova music festival, where at least 364 people died. These visits provide an economic and morale boost to residents, Cohen said.

The Sderot police station, where 10 officers were killed on Oct. 7 in a standoff that left the station in ruins, is a main attraction. Visitors stop at the local museum, and watch security footage of what happened on Oct. 7, then walk to the empty lot where the police station stood. Twisted metal remains. Israeli flags flutter in the wind. A sign says a memorial will be built there.

“In this dark hour, I wanted to do my part to make sure the people of Israel know that the people of the United States are with you,” former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said while visiting the site. Seinfeld later cried while talking about his own visit to a kibbutz, describing it as “the most powerful experience” of his life.

Zehava Ben Zaken, a lifelong Sderot resident, said it has taken time to adjust to seeing visitors every time she walks by. “I’m happy they come to see this place, so they can understand and stand with us,” she said.

Hearing the booms from Gaza a few kilometers (miles) away, she hoped that visitors can finally understand Sderot’s precarious security situation. “We’re totally broken,” she said.

South of Sderot, the site of the Nova music festival has become a pilgrimage site for hundreds of visitors per day. Photos of victims are arranged around what had been the main stage. Loved ones have left candles, sculptures, photos and other mementos.

Standing there helped her understand the enormity of loss of life, said Naomi Hanan, a medical student from San Francisco. “It’s right in front of your face and there’s no denying or ignoring what you’ve been hearing or seeing through the media,” she said.

In a eucalyptus grove near the site, an organization called Triumph of the Spirit offers virtual reality tours of three kibbutzim, including Nir Oz. The tours are currently only open to soldiers on official educational visits, but an English version will be available in the coming weeks for international tourists.

“I feel like I’m in Fortnite!” one soldier said as he slipped on the headset, then went silent as images of destruction appeared.

The videos were created by Miriam Cohen and Chani Kopolovich, who had created such tours of Auschwitz for a Holocaust education experience for people who don’t travel to Poland.

Image

“We’ve made it accessible to go on this tour without damaging peoples’ privacy,” said Pinchas Tosig, who runs the tent and has 300 to 700 soldiers visit per day.

Some residents of southern Israel are looking beyond the visitors to the future.

In the coming weeks, Nir Oz will start demolishing some buildings to make way for new construction. Residents wonder how to preserve what happened while making space for new lives. Some say part of the destruction should remain. Others don’t want reminders — or visitors.

On one tour, Bazar pointed out the safe room where she spent hours hiding on Oct. 7. Her home was mostly spared. Others were burned. She doesn’t want the destruction to remain inside Nir Oz and hopes any future memorial will be elsewhere.

“I don’t want any child to be impacted by the ruins,” she said. “Our cemetery is full. Isn’t that memorial enough?”

  • Dubai and Mauritius are top trending destinations for South African travelers - Mastercard Economics Institute
  • Digitalization driving greater convenience for tourists in Africa, reveals report
  • Longer stays are benefiting the continent’s travel sector, with tourists to South Africa spending an extra two days on vacation

Johannesburg, South Africa; 26 June 2024: The travel sector in 2024 is breaking boundaries. This year consumer spending on travel is robust with significant increases in passenger traffic, according to the latest global report from the Mastercard Economics Institute. ‘Travel Trends 2024’ provides comprehensive insights into the evolving landscape of the travel industry across multiple markets.

Despite fluctuating exchange rates and varying levels of affordability, the desire to travel remains stronger than ever. From South Africa, the top five trending destinations to escape the winter are Dubai, Mauritius, Istanbul, Frankfurt, and Nairobi. Cape Town is among the top three trending destinations from Saudi Arabia. Globally, Japan (#1), Ireland (#2) and the UAE (#9) are among the global frontrunners for top trending destinations in the last 12 months . Looking forward however, Munich ranks as the top trending destination for the next three months (June-August 2024) given the European Championship action.

In 2024 the travel sector is flourishing, with nine out of the last 10 record-setting spending days in the global cruise and airline industry occurring this year [1] .

“The travel sector in Africa is recovering well, complemented by an appetite to discover destinations that offer nature, culture, and authentic experiences. It’s great to see travelers extend their stays, and also use more digital payments, both of which are very positive for the tourism industry at large, as well as local governments building diversified economies,” said Natalia Lechmanova, Chief Economist EEMEA at Mastercard Economics Institute .

In addition, growing digitalization is driving greater convenience for tourists visiting Sub-Saharan Africa. The fast growth in adopting digital payments has also meant a lower reliance on cash in the region, resulting in shifts in spending patterns within tourism. According to Mastercard Economics Institute estimates, the percentage of tourism cash volumes (measured by ATM withdrawals as a proportion of card spend) made by tourists while visiting Sub-Saharan Africa dropped to the lowest point on record in 2024 – about 10 percentage points lower compared to 2019. While domestically, most digital payments across the region are made through mobile money payments, travelers rely on their cards to make payments in the region more than ever before.

Drawing on a unique analysis of aggregated and anonymized transaction data, including Mastercard SpendingPulse™, and third-party data sources, the report takes a deep dive into key travel trends globally for the year and beyond, including:

Record-breaking travel

International tourist arrivals to Africa have exceeded pre-pandemic levels for the first time in the first quarter of 2024. During the first quarter of South Africa welcomed 2.4 million visitors from the rest of the world, representing a 15.4% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Mauritius recorded a 16% increase over the same period. In 2023, tourist arrivals to Tanzania increased by 24.3% to a record-breaking 1,808,205 [2] .

Leisure for longer

Travelers to South Africa are extending their trips by almost two extra days (from 7.8 to 10.6 days) compared to pre-pandemic. The global average is one extra day, a trend driven by warmer climates and affordable destinations. The Mastercard Economics Institute found a clear inverse relationship between the price of the destination and the incremental number of days tourists spend while in those destinations. In other words, the cheaper the destination, the longer the stay.

Experience economy on the go

Consumers have prioritized meaningful experiences over material goods, even when traveling. Spending on experiences now totals 12% of tourism sales, according to SpendingPulse Destinations which measures in-store and online retail sales across all forms of payment - the highest point in at least five years as of March 2024. Memorable events are driving travel trends, whether it is for concerts (like Taylor Swift shows) or sporting events (like the Cricket World Cup).
