Las Vegas, Nevada

Run wild in sunny Las Vegas for a truly exciting last-minute getaway trip. Bright lights, buzzing casinos, notorious nightlife - this high-paced city never sleeps. For a last-minute vacation, there's just so much to do in Vegas.

On the North Strip, gaze at the hoopla that is Las Vegas from the Stratosphere Tower. Watch waters splash at the famous Bellagio's fountains or ride the monorail to the convention center. Or stroll the street where the first casinos stood in downtown Las Vegas. This vintage area offers gambling and captivating street acts. And make sure to bring your appetite. Vegas still offers the all-you-can-eat buffets, but it also hosts some of the country's finest restaurants. Last Minute Deals in Washington D.C.

Washington Plaza Hotel

Washington D.C.

For a fun and easy last-minute vacation, treat yourself to a tour of Washington, D.C. See awe-inspiring monuments and picturesque colonial villages right in the heart of our nation's capital. The famous Metro transit system whisks visitors through the District, stopping near major tourist sights and traveling on into nearby Northern Virginia and Maryland. No visit to Washington, D.C. would be complete without visits to the monuments and memorials honoring the country's presidents, war veterans, and founding fathers. Since few of them are located near Metro stops, many visitors prefer to take a bus tour.

The districts many Smithsonian museums cover a wide variety of topics. Art galleries alone cover American, African and Asian art, plus modern and contemporary works and portraiture. Other favorites include the Air and Space Museum and the National Zoo. If you want to skip all that and just check out a fun neighborhood for your last-minute getaway, stroll the lovely campus of historic Georgetown University, or take a guided tour for an in-depth look. Just outside the gates, be sure to check out the area's colorful 18th-century row houses. Historic sights in the village include the C & O Canal, the Old Stone House and the Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitors and residents flock to the Georgetown Flea Market on Sunday mornings in search of hidden treasure.

Last Minute Deals in NYC

The Manhattan at Times Square Hotel

New York City, New York

It might seem too big a city to accommodate a last-minute getaway trip, but never fear - because of its sheer number of attractions, New York City is actually an ideal spontaneous trip destination! It's a city of contrasts, where the 24-hour hustle and bustle balances the oases of Central Park and the quietly elegant Hudson River. Stick to one or two fun neighborhoods and you'll get your fill of the Big Apple. Short for "South of Houston"; SoHo is New York's artistic sanctuary and a fantastic area to shop, eat or just hang out. Located in lower Manhattan, it's an eclectic assortment of lofts, combining residential, commercial and gallery space. In the 1960s, artists started inhabiting lofts in the area, which were actually vacated sweatshops.

Today, these live-work units sell for millions of dollars. People are drawn to Greenwich Village by the local diversity, funky shopping, top-notch restaurants and fascinating Old New York architecture. Washington Square is one of the most romantic neighborhoods in the city. Tree-lined streets, pretty brick houses, jazz clubs, coffeehouses and sidewalk cafes - you'll find them all in the Village. Tips for a last-minute getaway: you can most easily snag theater tickets during January and February, but finding a good table at a restaurant can be easier in July and August, when New Yorkers tend to escape the city. Visit New York City between the first of the year and early April for great bargains.

Introducing the latest trend in travel: surprise trips to places that won’t be revealed to you until it’s go time.

spontaneous travel deals

Jubel , a tech-enabled travel company founded in 2015 in California, offers customized multi-destination getaways and route planning. It can also save you more than 55 percent in travel costs compared with booking a trip yourself, thanks to insider travel deals. Jubel also offers surprise trips .

Fill out its survey with your preferred dates, budget, and travel style, and it’ll send you a trip proposal. You can be completely surprised by the destination or learn the continent or country ahead of time. Once you’ve booked, you’ll get sealed envelopes to open along your journey, plus details on what to pack and when to show up at the airport. International trips start at around $1,000 per person per week.

Pack Up and Go

spontaneous travel deals

Want a weekend getaway in the U.S. without any hassle of planning it? Enter Pack Up and Go , founded in 2016 in Pittsburgh. Give the company your dates and budget, and complete a quick survey (sample question: Do you want action, relaxation, or culture?), and it will do the rest for you. Prior to your trip, you’ll get a packing list, flight information, and a weather forecast. Days before you leave, an envelope with your destination and itinerary will arrive in the mail. Open it at the airport. Trips start at $400 per person.

The Vacation Hunt

spontaneous travel deals

Whether you have three days or two weeks, the expert travelers at the Vacation Hunt , started in 2017 by a husband and wife in Washington, D.C., will plan a trip for you. Tell the reps what you’re looking for (spas or zoos? bars or museums?) and they’ll start sending you clues as to where you’re going. Packaged trips in the U.S. start at $750 per person; international trips start at $950. They also offer gift certificates if you want to give someone else a surprise trip.

Magical Mystery Tours

spontaneous travel deals

With Magical Mystery Tours , you won’t know where you’re going until you show up at the airport. First, enter your preferences: Do you want a foreign trip? Do you dislike the cold or the beach? Would you prefer heading to the desert or someplace tropical? Then input your dates, budget, and who you’re traveling with. The company will take care of the details. Magical Mystery Tours has been booking destination vacations to locations all over the globe since 2009. Cost depends on the length of the trip, whether it’s international or domestic travel, and the kind of accommodations you want. Weekend trips for two start at $1,500.

Surprise Me Trips

Choose between quick road trips from your hometown or far-flung destinations via airplane. You’ll get details about what to bring and where to be just before your departure. For its weekend road trips, tell the company where you want to start, and it will plan a surprise itinerary around your region, including a few nights in different locales and major landmarks and activities to check out along the way. Despite this travel company’s name, it will also arrange trips that don’t come as a surprise, if that’s more your thing. Surprise Me Trips was launched by three well-traveled friends in Texas in 2016. Weekend regional road trips start at $375.

Black Tomato

spontaneous travel deals

In 2017, high-end travel company Black Tomato  debuted its  Get Lost service, which creates adventurous tailor-made expeditions to wilderness destinations like Mongolia or the Arctic that are kept entirely a secret from you. Here’s how it works: select a polar, jungle, coastal, desert, or mountain trip—or have Black Tomato choose that, too—and book at least six months in advance to give you time to train and prepare. When you arrive at your location, you’ll be outfitted with all the gear you need, plus a private transfer from the airport to your starting point and a satellite phone for emergencies. Chart your way through a series of mapped-out checkpoints using navigational technology and your own two feet. The journey ends at a luxury retreat. Average Get Lost trips cost around $15,000 per person—but there are shorter, less expensive options, too.

Rustic Pathways

spontaneous travel deals

Designed for high school students looking for an exciting summer group trip, student-travel company Rustic Pathways offers a mystery trip to an unknown international destination. Before departure you’ll get a Patagonia duffel bag sent to you that’s filled with clues and a few essentials. Then arrive at the designated airport and spend the next two weeks exploring foreign cities and remote villages with other intrepid students as a guide leads the way. As of press time, there were still a few spots left on an upcoming trip in late June. It costs $5,995, not including airfare.

Why You Should Try Spontaneous Travel This Year

Senior Reporter, HuffPost Life

spontaneous travel deals

Planning a vacation often entails months of researching, asking friends for recommendations, strategizing around costs, making reservations and otherwise preparing for a nice escape from your everyday life. But that’s not the only way to travel. In fact, many people enjoy more last-minute getaways.

“Spontaneous travel is one of my absolute favorite ways to travel,” travel blogger Rocky Trifari told HuffPost. “The spontaneity takes away a lot of the stress that comes from the arduous planning and anticipation of a trip. It can even be empowering to recognize that in some cases, those planning procedures we typically follow aren’t nearly as necessary as we brainwash ourselves to believe.”

Taking a spontaneous trip is a great way to let flexibility be your guide and explore destinations that weren’t necessarily on your radar. Don’t hesitate to go outside your travel comfort zone. And it doesn’t necessarily mean you need to spend more money.

“It’s unlikely someone comes back from a trip regretting they took it, and additionally, the spontaneous travel doesn’t have to mean booking a flight the day before and traveling for a month,” said Katy Nastro, a spokesperson for Scott’s Cheap Flights . “It can even be seeing a great fare pop up, booking a week or long-weekend stay when you had no intention of taking that trip at all.”

Below, travel experts break down the benefits of spontaneous travel and share their top tips for making the best of a last-minute trip.

A spontaneous trip allows you to be more present.

“The benefit of spontaneous travel is that it allows you to be more present,” said travel blogger Esther Susag . “Instead of needing to make sure you check everything off of your planned itinerary, you are able to take it all in and not feel the pressure of needing to rush to your next stop.”

These types of trips tend to comes with more bare-bones itineraries ― or no itinerary at all ― which makes for a slower, calmer experience.

“With spontaneous travel, you don’t have the time to figure out every ‘top spot’ to see, so instead when you arrive and you find something you are enjoying, there’s not that pressure to leave immediately to fit everything in,” Susag said.

There’s greater openness to the endless possibilities in travel.

In October, the team at Skyscanner released a report about the happiness benefits of traveler spontaneity created in consultation with psychologist Emma Kenny.

Kenny “pointed out that spontaneous travel helps foster a ‘can-do’ attitude and reminds travelers of the limitless possibilities that await them,” said Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s travel trends expert. “When travelers are able to live in the moment, they’re able to experience the thrill of adventure without the stress of planning a trip and making all of the decisions that entails.”

Trifari echoed this sentiment, noting that he recently took an excellent last-minute trip to Chicago and unexpectedly made lifelong friends in the process.

“Spontaneous travel is a way to meet new people, discover destinations that maybe you wouldn’t have gone to ordinarily, and helps prevent decision paralysis, which stops many people from traveling in the first place,” he said.

If you're looking to up your travel game next year, consider not spending time planning a trip and jumping into "spontaneous travel" instead.

You can discover new sides of your travel personality.

“For the more organized and ‘Type A’ kind of traveler, spontaneous travel may allow them to take a new and different approach to travel, and they might be surprised at how much they enjoy having a more flexible schedule, maybe they will even find that they are less stressed overall,” Susag noted.

Of course, there are benefits to planning ahead for a trip, but having to be more spur-of-the-moment in your travels can lead to pleasant surprises and amazing adventures.

“You may not have found that amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurant where you got to chat with some locals about their country for hours as opposed to planning your meals around the highest-rated restaurants on Tripadvisor,” Susag said. “Instead of having your trip already planned out when you arrive, it may push you to ask locals some of their favorite hidden gems or places to see and that can lead you down some really unique and fun adventures that you wouldn’t have known about had you planned far in advance.”

The mental health benefits are real.

“There are countless surveys that affirm travelers are more healthy, happy and productive than non-travelers, and with the addition of spontaneity to the mix, you can expect an increase to all of the above,” Nastro said. “Spontaneous travel can have the power to release us from daily stresses, spark creativity and an overall sense of adventure when we immerse ourselves in a new place.”

In a time when many of us live über-scheduled lives, she emphasized the value of breaking away from routine by taking a last-minute trip. It can be especially helpful if you’re feeling a little stuck in a rut.

“And while going on a super long and well-planned vacation can be amazing, it may not necessarily mean you’ll be feeling transformed the entire trip,” Nastro said. “ A Dutch study at Radboud University in Nijmegen showed that trip length may not necessarily correlate to increased health and well-being as respondents said their health and wellness peaked at day eight, returning to pre-trip levels, so three one-week trips may be better than one three-week trip for overall well-being, for example.”

Spontaneous travel introduces more excitement and relaxation into our lives.

Here’s how to make spontaneous travel work for you.

Taking a spontaneous trip may feel daunting and unfamiliar at first, but the experts HuffPost spoke to shared their tips for making the most of it as well.

Be strategic about your flights.

“My advice for anyone wanting to try out spontaneous travel is to be strategic about how you buy your flights,” Susag said. “This is a great opportunity to use those credit card points you’ve been racking up and save some money.”

Don’t be afraid to book each leg with a separate airline, especially if you have a small number of loyalty points with different companies.

“Try to fly during the weekdays. Flight prices tend to be cheaper during the week as opposed to the weekend,” Susag added.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to fly in terms of cost, crowds and cancellations, so consider booking those days if you can.

“Being able to work remotely in a location for a day or two can help to maximize your time away as well if you are short on vacation days,” Nastro noted.

Snag deals when they pop up.

“If an opportunity presents itself, take it!” Trifari urged. “Monitor flight prices, keep in touch with friends or family who may share an interest in traveling with you, and look for good deals online.”

There are lots of websites and apps that share good travel deals, like The Points Guy and Scott’s Cheap Flights.

“If you happen to see something that makes sense for your wallet ― a flight, accommodation, or itinerary ― book it,” Trifari said. “You can ask around and create a trip with memories that’ll last you a lifetime. Even if you go on your own, solo adventures can be some of the most rewarding ones a person can take.”

Keep the itinerary short and simple.

Resist the urge to cram a bunch of last-minute adventures or reservations into your itinerary. That goes against the spirit of a spontaneous trip.

“For people who are big planners but are thinking about doing their first spontaneous trip, try to only plan one big activity or place to see a day,” Susag said. “That way you cross something off your list that you are wanting to do, but still allow yourself to leave room for flexibility and unplanned adventures.”

Book accommodations with free cancellation.

“One thing I do even before I have fully decided if I am going to go on a spontaneous trip somewhere is I will book a hotel with free cancellation as soon as I’m even thinking about a trip,” Susag said. “That way I have decent accommodation as a backup, and I can always look for better options after.”

Location is another important factor when picking lodging as well.

“I also try to get my accommodation as central as I can and, I promise, that makes doing a spontaneous and unplanned trip somewhere much easier and more stress-free,” Susag said.

Flexible accommodations will help make spontaneous travel more doable.

Be flexible with your destination.

“For a leisure traveler, price is almost always the deciding factor when booking airfare. However, oftentimes we are stuck by dates or location, and don’t consider being flexible with either, when in fact flexibility is key to finding amazing deals,” Nastro said.

She recommended searching for flight options based on a broader region like Western Europe, rather than a specific country like Spain. You may come across an amazing destination that’s less familiar or find the opportunity to rediscover a place you haven’t visited in years.

Travel search engines and other third-party sites make it easy to spot good deals if you cast a wide net.

“ An ‘Everywhere’ search on Skyscanner for December reveals great value flights from New York for as little as $35 to Nashville, $55 to Miami, $79 to Turks & Caicos, $85 to Chicago, $89 to San Francisco, $170 to Cartagena, $246 to Rome, $266 to Paris for those willing to be a little spontaneous,” Nastro said.

Consider the off-season.

“Try going to places during an ‘off-season,’” Nastro advised. “Not only is airfare significantly less, but during a low-season, all aspects of travel are more affordable such as car rentals and hotels.”

Research the peak and low seasons in destinations you’re considering. For many, it’s right after the winter holidays.

“January and February are the least traveled months of the entire year, yet this is the time when airfare tends to be cheapest, as well as there is an abundance of cheap deals to be found, regardless of warm or cold weather destinations,” Nastro said. “A lot less people are traveling due to just traveling over the winter holidays so for those of us looking to find spontaneous last-minute deals, this might be a great time to consider.”

Be flexible with your dates, as well as your destination.

“Searching by multiple dates and airports will give you the best chance of a bargain,” Lindsay said. “Flight prices are all based on supply and demand. Because some dates are more popular than others, prices will vary. The ‘whole month’ search tool allows you to see cheap flights at a glance and pick the right deal for you.”

Find a spontaneity buddy.

“If you struggle to be spontaneous and you know that you need that extra push to get you out of your comfort zone, enlist the help of your partner, best friend, or parent,” Lindsay recommended. “Get them to plan some fun trips away and agree that they will only tell you where you are going a few hours before you need to set off!”

Then, you can repay the favor by taking on the next surprise trip. The key to making spontaneous travel happen is to find what system works best for you. Channel the Nike slogan and just do it.

As Trifari remarked, “You can make the decision to travel somewhere, ask a buddy to join if you’d like, book the trip and go!”

Apps and Websites to Use for Spontaneous Family Travel

Terry Ward

Last-minute family travel can either be astronomically expensive or can translate to big savings on airfare and hotel stays, if you're flexible and let the deals guide your decisions. When the stars align, these too-good-to-miss deals can create opportunities for family vacations you weren't even expecting.

But if you don't know where to look for these deals, then you'll miss out on the joy of spontaneous travel. We're here to change that. The first thing you should do is start following @TPG_Alerts, of course, but then read on for some of our favorite apps and websites for planning and setting (spontaneous) family travel in motion.

HotelTonight

Every frequent traveler should have this last-minute hotel-booking app on their phone. This app helps you find well-priced, centrally located hotels in cities around the world.

Using HotelTonight is simple. Launch the app, enter the city where you plan to stay and the dates of your travel (it doesn't have to literally be just for that night). Then scroll through the selection of available hotels, which are categorized with descriptions such as "solid," "basic" and "hip." You can look for same-day deals on hotels, but most hotels give the option of searching 100 days in advance of your travel date.

HotelTonight recently announced a new multiroom feature on the app, so you can book a block of rooms for larger families or groups traveling together. However, note that only some of the hotels let you select whether you need one bed or two, so select the room type, if possible, before booking if your family needs to ensure it has two beds.

HotelTonight has its own loyalty program, HT Perks , which earns you tiered elite status after spending certain amounts on hotel stays booked through the site. Each status level awards extra discounts on the already-discounted room rates.

A longtime favorite for finding cheap flights, the free Skyscanner app is also great to have on your phone when you need to find a last-minute car rental or hotel room. A particularly handy feature is how the flight options are broken down into either cheapest and best, with the latter category providing the most convenient connection times (something parents appreciate when it comes to those long-hauls with little ones).

If there's a route you're particularly interested in, you can sign up for the app's price-alert feature. When you're ready to travel, book through one of Skyscanner's partner websites; an airline website, so you can use your miles; or use your rewards at a booking a portal such as the Chase Ultimate Rewards travel portal.

When you book a family trip at the last minute, scrambling to pack will take precedence over planning a family-friendly itinerary -- that can wait until you're actually inflight, provided your kids are old enough to entertain themselves on the plane.

At times like this, an itinerary-planning website like Inspirock can be a real timesaver. The free website has a simple-to-navigate format: Enter your destination and dates. Choose your travel style (fast-paced or slow and easy) and click the kind of activities your family enjoys, with options such as museums, wildlife, historic sites, beaches, etc. Within seconds, the website suggests an itinerary that includes information on your destination, suggestions for side trips and other activities.

A recent search for a Florida trip listed impressive itinerary selections that included a visit to a museum specializing in Tiffany glass in Orlando and advice for spotting manatees near Tampa. The website is a resource for last-minute travelers to find travel information based on personal preference -- without putting in too much legwork.

PackPoint Travel Packing List

All parents know how stressful the scramble of packing for yourself and the kids can be, so having a packing list at the ready is a good idea for a family that wants to be on the go.

There are many list-making and packing apps out there, but PackPoint (free) is especially cool thanks to a few nifty features. When you first launch the app, it asks a series of questions about your trip, including activities you are planning and whether you plan to do laundry during your travels (genius, right?). The app checks the weather at your destination and generates a list of items to pack. You can whittle the list down by checking lines off as you pack or removing suggested items you don't need. The app keeps your list handy for future trips and makes it easy to share via email or social media.

Scott's Cheap Flights

I've been a premium member of Scott's Cheap Flights for almost a year now. I get wanderlust just reading the daily deal emails, especially knowing I am going to be chained to a desk for a while. Subject lines like "Big Europe Sale" and "Price Drop Sydney" are like travel catnip to me.

Believe me, as soon as I can take a break from my workload, I'm going to press "purchase" on one of the great flight deals the service keeps on my radar.

Scott's Cheap Flights focuses primarily on international airfare deals from airports frequently across the US. My city, Tampa, is frequently on the list, along with other cities you might not expect to have cutthroat rates. You can opt for a free subscription, which gets about a third of the deals emailed your way. I think it's worth paying for premium (there's a 30-day, money-back guarantee) because premium members get more deals and also are alerted about 30 minutes before other members (which can make a big difference in pouncing on a great deal). Premium costs $39 a year after the 14-day free trial, but the price is slated to rise in mid-April.

Once you find a deal, you should act quickly, but you can always pay with a card that awards fixed-value point s so that you are taking advantage of a good deal while still keeping your money safely in your wallet.

Bottom Line

Families need all the apps and tools they can get to book the least expensive and most captivating trips . So take advantage of the wonders of the 21st century to make sure you get to spend more time with your kids and not fretting over travel chores and bills.

Need to get away? 5 ways to book much-needed, impromptu travel

best apps and sites last minute travel tel aviv 2

This shift mirrors how we travel plan today. We no longer drive to the travel agency, but pull up a travel site to book our flights and hotels. But even that’s becoming old school: A lot more of us are now using apps on our phones. And with a desire for on-demand pricing and booking, there are plenty of travel apps that do just that.

But what if you are looking for inspiration? While most apps are good at handle the basic transactions, few can offer insights or recommendations. If you’re looking for some help in planning a last-minute getaway, these six apps are our current favorites.

  • Have T-Mobile? Your 5G service is about to get much faster
  • The Galaxy A54 gets a much-needed design refresh in new renders
  • WhatsApp gets much-needed improvements for voice messages

Google Flights

Google Flights is useful for looking up real-time airfare and price fluctuations, but if you’re looking for inspiration, the website (there’s no app) has a handy discovery tool. Punch in some dates or search by month, length of trip, places, and interests. You can leave it vague if you want a wide selection of suggestions, or narrow down to a specific weekend or location.

The website shows a visual list of recommended cities, along with estimated pricing for flights (based on your point of departure) and hotels, as well as interests (we’re not sure we would count “fog” as our must-see attraction in San Francisco, but to each his own). If you have a strict budget, use the “Explore map” view to adjust the search parameters to include a price cap. Then, pan through the map to see what surprising locations pop up. Hit the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button if you really want to be spontaneous.

We’ve sung many praises  for Hopper, the flight search app that uses artificial intelligence and big data to make fare predictions. It tells you the best times to book, and you can have Hopper keep watch for better prices. Hopper’s results can help you determine whether you should make that last-minute getaway or save it for another time.

A new feature we like is Fair Bear. Essentially, it’s an overview of the fine print associated with an airfare that many travelers may not pay attention to. While a fare may be the cheapest, it could come with a lot of restrictions. As airlines continue to introduce confusing pricing tiers and new fees, Fair Bear gives a quick nutshell of what you’re getting into, and whether the price is worth it.

HotelTonight

With the rise in what’s being termed “spontaneous travel,” many hotel booking services are now catering to last-minute travelers. The one app that’s the most popular is HotelTonight , which focuses solely on this type of travel.

HotelTonight says it offers heavily discounted rates, and we found this to be accurate. In one search, a HotelTonight rate for one hotel was $100 (or more) cheaper than other booking sites, include the hotel’s. The only downside we notice is that hotels tend to be on the pricier side, but the positive is that they are all highly rated properties, so you don’t have to scroll through hundreds of listings.

While it’s better known as the app for short-term vacation rentals, Airbnb also offers a service called Experiences. As the name suggests, these are events hosted by in-the-know locals that focus on interests in the area, like sake tasting in Tokyo, home cooking in Bangkok, trail exploration in Portland, Oregon. If you’re looking to include some authentic experiences – whether it’s the arts, food, nature, etc. – in your trip, this is a nicer alternative to packaged tours. Of course, you can still use the app to book last-minute lodging.

Google Trips

Not to be confused with Google Flights, Google Trips is an iOS and Android app for planning and managing itineraries. It’s great for those who already have a flight reserved (if you use Gmail for bookings, it can search for trips – past and future – and automatically add them to the list), but haven’t done any research on things to do and see, places to eat, important info to know, how to get around, etc. – city guides essentially. Besides suggestions, Google Trips can even plan entire itineraries for select destinations, which is perfect for the lazy, last minute non-planner.

Qualcomm has announced a new 6-series Snapdragon processor, the Snapdragon 690, destined for mid-range phones in the near future. Why should you care about it? Because it’s the first 6-series chip to support 5G, and that means the price of 5G phones is ready to tumble. By how much? For reference, the Nokia 5.3 has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 665 inside, and can be purchased for 125 British pounds, or about $160, while the new Motorola Moto E has the Snapdragon 632 chipset and is yours for $149. Last year, Google used the Snapdragon 670 in the $399 Pixel 3a.

That’s a lot less than the entry-level 5G phones we see now which use the Snapdragon 765G processor, including the 549 British pounds (about $690) Motorola Edge, and the 399 British pound (about $500) TCL 10 5G. The new wave of cheap 5G phones which use the Snapdragon 690 could potentially reduce this cost to $400 or much less, based on comparable phones today.

Humane has told owners of its Ai Pin device to stop using its charging case “immediately” because it “may pose a fire safety risk.”

The warning was sent in an email to owners on Wednesday that was seen by The Verge. It comes just two months after the $700 gadget started shipping, and follows a slew of reviews in which it was widely panned for falling short of the maker's promise to act as an AI-powered digital assistant.

The newly released Google Pixel 8a has made its debut in the competitive budget smartphone category, officially replacing its predecessor, the Google Pixel 7a, which launched last year. Despite the two phones' similar appearances, the latest model boasts significant improvements under the hood, setting it apart as a considerably superior option.

Spontaneous Travel: How to Book a Last Minute Trip

Janice Waugh

December 5, 2023 by Janice Waugh

image, woman traveler, spontaneous trip

Spontaneous travel, a trip at the last minute, is truly possible when you travel solo.

Gone is the hassle of coordinating with others. You can leave home at a moment's notice. As you travel, you can change plans, leave a place early or stay longer, or turn left rather than right, whenever you want.

A spontaneous trip is an adventure. Your travel choices will be based on timing, availability, and pricing rather than a specific destination.

On short notice, pricing for flights will likely be higher. To compensate, this could push you to less expensive destinations you might not otherwise consider. There may be great deals on tours and cruises as companies try to fill the last available spots. Again, the destination selection may be not be your first choice but one of them could turn out to be that surprising trip of a lifetime.

So, how do you make spontaneous travel happen?

With the right attitude and the right tools.

9 Tips for Booking a Spontaneous Trip

On a spontaneous trip you need to take care of the basics of travel planning: transportation and accommodation. With that figured out, you'll be good to go, unless you are going out of country. Traveling abroad, you will need a few more things like travel insurance, visas, and a phone plan that will work for you.

1. Start your road trip at a moment's notice.

A road trip is so easy. Pack a bag, hop in the car and go in any direction you want. It could be to visit a friend in another city or to a destination that is just for you. As long as there is accommodation and a grocery store on route, you'll have what you need.

2. Use the “everywhere” search for affordable last-minute flights.

Skyscanner has a cool feature where you can search for a flight based on dates but without specifying a destination. It will then present flight options based on the least expensive by country. Dig into the countries of your choice and book an affordable flight.

3. Use Rome2Rio to plan a multi-destination trip.

Rome2Rio is my favorite site for planning to get from one place to another. It works just about anywhere in the world. Put in your starting point and where you want to go to and it will let you know your travel options as well as approximately how long each option will take and what it will cost. I use it for big picture planning but also for figuring out small details like how to get from the airport to my hotel.

4. Book your first three nights before leaving.

A last-minute trip won't be as well planned as one that you've spent a long time researching. You will likely do a lot of planning while you are there. It is, therefore, important to land and stay put for a bit while you get oriented and make a plan that is realistic for your time, budget, and interests. I book using Booking.com .

5. Be aware of your booking commitments.

The cancellation policies for accommodation and transportation are important for the spontaneous traveler. Know what your commitment is when you book.

6. Stay central.

For the same reason as above–the fact that you have not researched this trip extensively–plan to stay in a central location so that you can easily enjoy your first few days of travel while you are also planning the rest of your trip. You'll also have better access to public transport, giving you more opportunities to explore in more directions.

7. Resist overpacking.

When you're heading out at the last minute it's easy to overpack. You look at your clothes and think that you may need this or that and end up overstuffing your suitcase. Resist this, especially if you've booked a budget airline which will ding you at the airport for your luggage being overweight. Our packing list will help you stay on track.

8. Don't forget travel insurance.

I don't travel without insurance but it's easy to forget as you get organized for a spontaneous trip. Here's our guide to buying travel insurance . If you're American, go right to travelinsurance.com , a comparison site that will help you book quickly.

9. Get your phone ready for travel.

If you're a little reckless with your phone when traveling out of the country you can end up with a very large bill. I have an account with UBIGI . Once it's set up on your phone, you can quickly and simply buy data for just about any destination. Read more about how to use your phone when traveling here .

How to Find a Last-Minute Tour or Cruise

1. sign up for emails from your favorite tour and cruise companies..

All tour and cruise companies have a mailing list for future deals. If you have favorite travel companies, sign up for their newsletter so that you know when there's a deal. You can be spontaneous on your schedule but it can also be on the schedule of a special deal.

2. Look for the Special Offers links.

The larger tour and cruise companies will have a menu link to their special offers which often point to last-minute trips. Sometimes it's a great deal. If there are no options for solo travelers, you may want to call the company directly if the trip departs within a week or two. They may be willing to negotiate on the single supplement of a double room in order to have some revenue on the spot.

3. Look for the search function by date.

Not all companies have a special offer section on their site but some will let you search based on dates as well as destination. Active Adventures has this feature. Click here and drag down to choose the year and month.

4. Book a cruise with an Online Travel Agent – OTA

Cruises can be incredibly cheap at the last minute. Go to a site like Expedia, choose cruises in the top menu, enter your dates, and see what pops up. The deals can be shockingly cheap.

Smartphone Apps for Spontaneous Travel

While travelers have long been able to set up airfare alerts, these apps go a step further in helping flexible travelers plan a last-minute trip.

spontaneous travel deals

By Justin Sablich

Have you ever just shown up at an airport without a clear travel plan? If your lifestyle allows for that sort of a lack of planning, but you’d rather ease into such a spontaneous adventure, there are several phone apps that can make unplanned travel feel less risky and more affordable.

While travelers have long been able to set up airfare alerts using Google Flights, Skyscanner, Kayak and a host of other web-based tools, the following apps go a step further in helping budget-conscious people who want to go somewhere but don’t know (or care) where.

Within the Hopper app there is a feature — once referred to as Flex Watch but now integrated into the Hopper app’s main functionality — which, as the original name suggests, aims to help those with flexible travel dates or destinations as well as spontaneous travelers.

You have the option to search for airfare of a specific destination, or you can tap on the box that asks “Flexible?” From there, simply choose your time frame (either “anytime” or any range up to 10 months in advance) and a length range (somewhere between a weekend and two weeks). You then set your home city; your destination can be either a specific city or “Anywhere.”

I first tried the former option using a theoretical long-weekend trip from New York to Chicago. After setting the appropriate parameters, Hopper gave me the most affordable options. In this case, round-trip airfare from New York to Chicago for March 1 to 5 was available for $112. Scrolling further down led me to a chart showing which months of the year are the least and most expensive for this route. (It turned out that March is the second cheapest month to travel from New York to Chicago.)

I also tried the “Flexible?” option to see what it could offer me from my home base of New York. It provided a range of trips of varying length available over the next several months, from nine days in Denver for a round-trip price of $145 to seven days in Reykjavik for $205. These are great deals if you’re free to go on the specified dates that accompany the airfare.

Once you settle on a trip, you have the option to book directly on the app (note that the cheapest fares are often nonrefundable, as my Chicago one was). But if I wasn’t ready to commit, I could have selected “Watch this trip for updates,” which basically bookmarks my trip by putting it on a “Watch” list.

Also from Hopper is a separate app with one function: to show you the best flight deals for the current day from your location. Unlike the main app, Get the Flight Out (GTFO) is for spontaneous travelers only. (Note: Since this article was originally published, Hopper stopped supporting the GTFO app; the company said the feature will be integrated into the main app sometime in May).

HotelTonight

Let’s say you got your last minute flight — you’ll need a place to stay.

HotelTonight is an app that offers travelers last-minute, same-day hotel deals and in-app ratings from users. The makers of the app say that hotels with unsold rooms share this information with them, hence the great bargains.

Searching for a room in Buffalo for my fake trip, I saw there was one room left at the Curtiss Hotel for $99, a room that the app says would normally cost $161. It looked quite nice, and 91 percent of the 34 people who have booked there using the app liked it.

The only problem is this deal was just for one night, and I was (theoretically) planning on eating chicken wings through Sunday. After going back to reset my dates, the Curtiss was unfortunately no longer an option. But there was a Days Inn near Niagara Falls for $45 a night, and many other options.

Initially, the app only allowed for same-day bookings, but it eventually expanded to seven days and now allows for up to 100 days in advance.

Other apps for last-minute hotel deals include HotelQuickly and One Night.

If you prefer to do all of your spontaneous bargain hunting in one app, consider Hipmunk, which studies itineraries and other data to find affordable travel deals.

You can search for specific destinations and dates, but those seeking inspiration will like the “Discover” tab, which shows a wide variety of deals based on categories ranging from basics like “Beach” and “Europe” to “Roman Empire” and “World’s Best Nightlife.”

Tapping on “Beach” reveal s round-trip flights to Cancun from $254, and then a calendar showing current prices for each day through the end of April. But, because I’m all about living in the moment, I decide I want to leave today, which is going to cost me roughly twice as much ($510).

There’s also a “Get a Room Tonight” button on the destination page, which will display a ranked list of rooms available for same-day booking.

Other apps that let you search for airfare and hotel rates include Last Minute and CheapTickets.

Colletts Travel: People rush to book last-minute Luxury Summer Holidays

' src=

Colletts Travel, part of Global Travel Collection, has reported high demand for last-minute summer trips, with sales up 30% for departures over the summer months compared with the same period last year.

The increase in bookings is driven by a combination of factors, including competitive pricing and exclusive packages in popular summer destinations such as Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Italy, the Maldives, South Africa, Thailand, and Dubai. There is also sustained interest in the Caribbean even during the low-season summer months, as clients seek out value-for-money deals, with a strong emphasis on family travel.

“We are significantly up from last year when looking at our summer bookings and this shows the eagerness of clients who want to make the most of their summer holidays,” said Jennifer Hartnett, Head of Tour Operations and Contracting at Colletts Travel. “All-inclusive resorts in Greece and the Balearic Islands are expected to sell out quickly this summer. Touring in South America has also proven popular, with itineraries including the Amazon and Galapagos.”

Colletts Travel has seen a noticeable shift from ticking off bucket list trips to more spontaneous, live-for-the-moment experiences. Luxury clients are prioritising immediacy and flexibility in their travel plans, seeking unique and personalised experiences rather than waiting for the perfect moment to fulfil long-held travel ambitions.

“Using an independent travel advisor, clients can book spontaneous getaways with peace of mind, leaving the experts to get them the best deals and create bespoke packages to suit them,” added Francesca Mendola, VP, Global Travel Collection. “We pride ourselves on securing the best contracts and our contracting team works diligently to ensure our independent travel advisors can deliver exceptional travel experiences that meet every client’s needs and preferences.”

5 tips to help you ace spontaneous travel in 2024

Some people prefer the simple things in life without making grand plans and go through life day by day.

In travel, “last minute” trips conjure visions of spontaneous adventures and the thrill of embracing the unknown.

The key is to not think too much about it, choose a destination , get on a flight and explore.

For South Africans desperate for a sun-soaked or snow-draped getaway, understanding the ins and outs of booking can unlock a world of possibilities.

Choosing between a sun-soaked holiday versus snow-draped holiday

The decision between sun and snow destinations often hinges on seasonal inclinations. When it comes to impromptu holiday planning, these distinctions play a pivotal role.

Tropical visa-free havens, Mauritius and Seychelles, emerge as favoured options for those yearning for a swift escape.

The allure of sandy beaches and the convenience of short flight times from South Africa make deals for these destinations particularly accessible.

On the flip side, the majestic snowy peaks of the French and Italian Alps beckon adventure enthusiasts seeking a winter wonderland.

However, securing bookings for snow destinations may pose unique challenges, including considerations for visa application processing times and flight availability.

Yet, for the spirited traveller willing to embrace spontaneity, the prospect can reveal hidden gems nestled in the heart of the Alps.

So how does a last-minute booking affect your wallet?

Navigating the financial terrain of eleventh-hour travel involves understanding the nuances that vary between sun and snow destinations. For sun seekers, the prospect of securing these deals can be a welcome boon to the budget.

Out of peak travel periods, airlines and resorts frequently reduce prices to fill remaining vacancies, providing a cost-effective option for those with flexible schedules.

Conversely, the financial dynamics undergo a discernible shift when it comes to snow destinations, such as the revered French and Italian Alps.

Given the seasonal nature and heightened demand for winter escapes, waiting to secure deals in these Alpine wonderlands may not consistently translate into significant cost savings and any holidays to these destinations should be booked early as a rule of thumb.

According to Olivier Perrilat-Piratoine, MD at Club Med South Africa, early-bird bookings for ski holidays, which are available during the launch of the season early in the year, give holiday makers the best offer of the season as they benefit from significant discounts on their accommodation, best choice of resorts, dates and rooms, plus a low deposit of R3000 per person on accommodation which secures their stay and locks in the exchange rate.

So here are 5 tips to help you ace your spontaneous travel in 2024.

Flexibility is key

Embrace a sense of adventure by remaining open to diverse destinations and departure dates. Being flexible with your travel plans increases the likelihood of capitalising on the best deals.

If you have the freedom to explore various locations and can adjust your departure dates, you may uncover exclusive offers that align perfectly with your getaway.

Subscribe to alerts

Stay one step ahead of opportunities by proactively signing up for travel alerts and newsletters. Airlines and resorts often release exclusive deals and promotions to subscribers before making them widely available.

By staying informed through timely notifications, you can pounce on coveted offers, securing both the destination and the budget-friendly deal you desire.

Off-peak advantage

Consider the unbeatable advantages of travelling during off-peak periods. Beyond avoiding crowds and enjoying a more intimate travel experience, off-peak travel increases the likelihood of securing discounts.

Resorts and airlines may be more inclined to offer enticing deals during quieter times to fill vacancies, making your escape not only more affordable but also more serene without the crowds.

Go all-inclusive

Consider booking with hospitality operators like Club Med whose expertise in all-inclusive offerings ensures a seamless experience.

The all-inclusive packages, that include accommodation, meals, childcare, entertainment and an array of land and water activities, make them particularly appealing and convenient for last-minute bookings, ensuring a quick and stress-free experience for impromptu adventurers.

Additionally opt for bundled packages that include both flights and accommodation. Booking your travel components together can often result in additional savings.

Stay social media savvy

Harness the power of social media to stay in the loop about flash sales and exclusive offers. Follow airlines, resorts, and travel deal accounts on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Many travel providers share time-sensitive promotions through these channels, allowing you to stay connected and snag incredible deals at a moment's notice.

Deciding to go on holiday on a whim offers an exciting avenue for South Africans to break free from routine and embark on unforgettable journeys.

Whether chasing the sun or the snow, understanding the dynamics of such bookings can transform your impulses into well-curated adventures, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

‘It’s all been so spontaneous’: New Braunfels artist goes viral with powerwashing artwork

Sam ward said during the pandemic, he had to power wash his driveway. now, he’s getting paid to do this type of artwork across the country.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Powerwashing isn’t a chore for artist Sam Ward.

“I get to come out and do whatever I want to do,” Ward said. “It’s all been so spontaneous.”

Ward uses concrete as his canvas and a powerwasher as his paintbrush. His mission is to make beauty out of the mundane, and now, he’s going viral on social media for this style of art.

“It’s so cool that I can do something that I truly love and I truly enjoy and it doesn’t feel like work,” Ward said.

Ward first started his power-washing art journey during the pandemic. He said he bought a big pack of chalk for his kids to use on the driveway. But, before they could draw, he had to clean it.

“I got really bored, and I started drawing some shapes,” Ward said. “Then the next day, my wife asked me if I was going to go finish pressure washing, and I said, ‘No, I’m gonna go draw something,’”

What started as circles and squares quickly became lifesize murals and intricate drawings. Ward said he’s been commissioned to help with pieces for Freight Harbor and Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.

“I’ve had some really interesting opportunities that I could have never expected,” Ward said.

He’s constantly coming up with ideas and constantly looking for dirty surfaces.

“I have different folks who kind of donate their dirty driveways,” Ward said.

He started filming these projects and posted them on social media. Within a couple of months, viewers started tuning in from across the world. Some of his videos have millions of clicks.

Ward said his work as a power-washing artist is far from finished, as he’s always looking for his next project.

I tried 'skiplagging' to save $200 on flight tickets, but it was a nightmare experience — and I'll never use this travel hack again

  • Jesse Collier used a travel hack called "skiplagging" to find cheaper tickets for her vacation.
  • She purchased a flight with a layover, but skipped the second leg to get off in the layover city.
  • Collier details how she got separated from her luggage and spent her vacation in the same clothes.

Insider Today

What are you willing to do to save a buck when you travel? Some might rough it up in a hostel, others might stuff their outfits in a carry-on or break an airline policy or two.

I did the latter and tried "hidden city ticketing" via Skiplagged .

Hidden city ticketing is a travel hack that involves purchasing a flight with a layover, but never getting  on the second leg and staying  in the layover city instead.

This travel "hack" is a gray area. It's not illegal, but it is against many airlines' Terms and Conditions — you know, that box you check when you legally agree to abide by policies you didn't read.

I had just gotten laid off from my job and decided to take a spontaneous multistate, cross-country vacation

Being in-between jobs made me conscious of my spending, so I was hunting for a good deal. I managed to find reasonably-priced accommodation, but one-way flights from LAX to NYC were around $400, which was a lot for me.

That's when I saw an ad for Skiplagged, which championed hidden-city ticketing. In my case, the trip was from Los Angeles to New York City to Buffalo. I would be hopping off in NYC and going along my merry way — or so I thought.

I booked the flight and really thought I was a genius. I told my mom, my husband, and my best friend Becky that I found a great deal. $146 for a cross-country flight! Who could beat it?

The catch of hidden city ticketing is that you cannot check a bag

This is because the bag would go to the final destination (in my instance, Buffalo). I stuffed my rolling carry-on bag with all the warm clothes and necessities I needed to visit the east coast in February. It wasn't easy, but I made it work.

Seconds after arriving at LAX, my smug travel-hacking persona was taken over by an anxious mess. What if this doesn't work? What if they make me gate-check my bag?

If you've ever scored a really cheap plane ticket, it's more than likely that you're sitting at the back of the plane and you're in the absolute worst boarding group you could ever imagine. While those instances are not the end of the world, it usually means one thing: the overhead bins are full and you're forced to gate-check your bag.

After making it through security, I noticed my boarding group number — 5 — and nervously laughed to myself. Who knew they went that low?

I sat at the gate for 40 minutes and racked my brain trying to figure out what to do if they asked me to check my bag. The gate attendants warned us about a full flight over the speaker, letting us know that we would likely be asked to check our carry-ons.

Boarding Group 5 was finally called and I slowly walked up to the gate. Before she even looked at me, the attendant had her hand out to collect my bag. I scanned my pass while she wrapped a tag around the handle.

Related stories

I nervously asked if I could pick up my bag in New York. "I can't gate-check it," she said before politely motioning for the next guest to approach. And that was the end of the conversation.

I spent the 5-hour flight trying to figure out how I could get out of this mess

I realized I had two options: follow my bag to Buffalo and come back to NYC, losing a day or so of travel, or abandon my bag and see what I can do to get it back.

Neither of those options were how I wanted to spend my first couple of days in New York City.

As the flight landed, I had an idea — and it wasn't my proudest moment. I pulled out my makeup compact and rubbed my eyes, one by one, smudging my mascara. I wiped some black residue off my eyelid and dabbed it underneath my eye. I looked at my reflection and saw my eyes were red and I looked like hell. Good.

As I exited the plane, I gave my best sick-girl look to a gate attendant, and said, "I'm supposed to go to Buffalo but I just came down with something on the flight and I feel really sick. Is it possible to get my bag?"

The kind woman empathized but didn't know how to help me. She told me that I should really see a doctor, though, then sent me to another department at the airport. But they also didn't help me and told me to call the customer-service line.

Either way, my bag was already on the plane to Buffalo.

I spent the next two days in the same clothes I boarded the plane in

I found myself caught in this cycle of calling the customer-service line, being told that they would put my bag on a plane to New York City and that I could either have it delivered or go pick it up, only to be ghosted hours later and be told my bag never made it on that plane.

I wanted to feel bad for myself, but it just felt like karma. I thought that this is what I got for lying and breaking the rules.

I learned that a trip costs more than just money

In my extensive research on how to get my bag back, I found out that some airlines had banned people who were caught trying to do exactly what I did.

Multiple airlines, including the one I used, have since attempted to sue Skiplagged and accused the company of encouraging these practices. The last thing I need as a broke traveler is to be blacklisted by one of the largest US airlines.

I finally got my bag delivered to my Airbnb, but not without paying $60 in delivery fees.

Hidden city ticketing is positioned in the travel community as a "travel hack," but I'll tell anyone who asks that it's rarely worth the hassle. Sure, it can save you money — it saved me around $200 — but there was an added cost I never accounted for: my time and peace of mind.

I spent two days in New York City on the phone and my computer, agonizing over whether I would get my luggage back. Those two days could have been spent enjoying a pretzel in Central Park, seeing "The Book of Mormon," or eating delicious pizza — all of which would have been more enjoyable than waiting on hold with an airline.

There are better ways to save a buck in travel. I'll happily pay $200 if that means I don't have to wash my undergarments in a sink to rewear them.
