Squeeze 50th Anniversary Tour

To celebrate their momentous 50th anniversary, british music legends squeeze have today announced a massive uk tour for 2024. with a half-century distinguished by some of the smartest and sweetest guitar-pop made during the rock & roll era, squeeze will be performing an impressive list of hits and rare gems from their extensive back catalogue. they will be joined by special guest badly drawn boy..

Squeeze are one of rock's vital institutions, a band who carved out a distinctive place in the pop firmament with their vibrantly melodic, perceptive songs. Those songs were written by Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook , the composers who have remained at the heart of Squeeze since its inception. With hits such as Up the Junction, Cool for Cats and Hourglass. ‍

Joining Squeeze on their 50th anniversary festivities is one of the UK’s most treasured songwriters, Damon Gough aka Badly Drawn Boy , who also recently celebrated a musical milestone, 25 years of releasing music. From his still-towering, Mercury Prize winning debut The Hour Of Bewilderbeast in 2000 to the enthralling soundtrack to Nick Hornby adaptation About A Boy (from 2002); Badly Drawn Boy ’s beautiful and eclectic discography spans over nine albums including Have You Fed The Fish? (also 2002) Born In The U.K. (2006) and his most recent album Banana Skin Shoes in 2020. His set will feature a career-spanning set of hits and fan favourites.

A statement from the band: After many years of fundraising and awareness activities with Squeeze and as a solo artist, Glenn Tilbrook , recently accepted an invitation to become an Ambassador for the anti-poverty charity, the Trussell Trust . Squeeze have confirmed that they will once again be supporting the charity, which provides emergency food and support to people who cannot afford the essentials, while campaigning for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.

Right now, millions of people across the country are experiencing hunger and have no option but to turn to a food bank for support. Food banks in the Trussell Trust network gave out a record 1.5 million emergency food parcels between April and September 2023. This will be the busiest winter ever at food banks, who are already stretched to breaking point and urgently need food donations to continue to be there for people who need them right now.

We are inviting attendees on the tour to bring along food donations to the shows, where there will be collection points across the venue each night. There will also be collection buckets for any cash donations.  All donations will be distributed to people in crisis across the 1,300 food bank centres in the Trussell Trust network.

You can donate food at our shows or, if you want to make a difference right now, make a donation this winter to your local food bank. Visit www.trusselltrust.org/donate-food to find out how to make a donation to your local food bank and the items they most need this winter.

Squeeze thank you in advance for your generosity and look forward to seeing you at the shows.

Squeeze in the 1990s delivered exquisitely crafted records - ‘Play’, ‘Some Fantastic Place’, ‘Ridiculous’ and ‘Domino’. Reuniting in 2007 after solo careers, the ensuing decades have found Squeeze continuing to build  their formidable body of work, with the release of the vigorous comeback albums ‘Cradle to the Grave’ and ‘The Knowledge’. Squeeze have stayed on the road through the early 2020s, taking time to record the ‘Food for Thought’ charity EP in 2022 raising foods and funds for food banks.

With Difford and Tilbrook joined by bassist Owen Biddle, guitarist Melvin Duffy, percussionist Steve Smith, keyboardist Stephen Large and drummer Simon Hanson - the sound and spirit of Squeeze remains vital and vibrant for its fiftieth year.

Squeeze (formed in 1974) is arguably the finest new wave band to grace the ‘70s and ‘80s, bridging the gap between British rock and post-punk, hailing from London, England.

Originally formed in 1974 by Chris Difford who advertised for a guitarist in a local sweet shop, guitar player Glenn Tilbrook was the only respondent and subsequently joined. Keyboard player Jools Holland and drummer Paul Gunn arrived shortly afterwards and the group began playing the pub rock circuit under the monikers Captain Trundlow’s Sky Company and Skyco. The name Squeeze was later decided upon, chosen as a tribute to The Velvet Underground’s 1973 album of the same name. Bassist Harry Kakoulli was added in 1976 at the same time Gunn was replaced by former Chuck Berry drummer Gilson Lavis.

Squeeze released their debut EP “Packet of Three” in 1977 on Deptford Fun City Records, after which the group secured a record deal with A&M Records. With much of their initial output discredited by label execs, Squeeze’s debut self-titled album didn’t prove to be the best representation of their early material upon release in 1978. The group’s 1979 sophomore release “Cool for Cats” was a much more cohesive sound and spawned a pair of No. 2 singles “Cool for Cats” and “Up the Junction”. Subsequently the EP “6 Squeeze Songs Crammed into One Ten-Inch Record” was issued in late 1979, after which Kakoulli was fired from the group and replaced by John Bentley.

“Argybargy” appeared in 1980 representing a modest U.S. breakthrough, spawning the singles “Another Nail in My Heart” and “Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)”. Proficient pianist Jools Holland departed the group after the release wishing to pursue a boogie-woogie aesthetic and was replaced by the extolled Paul Carrack, formerly of Ace. Produced by Elvis Costello and Roger Bechirian, Squeeze’s fourth full-length “East Side Story” was critically acclaimed, peaking at No. 44 on the Billboard 200. The group continued to release a string of albums across the 1980s, following a short hiatus, including “Sweets from a Stranger”, “Difford & Tilbrook”, “Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti”, “Babylon and On” and “Frank”, raising Squeeze’s reputation as one of the respected live bands in the UK.

The live album “A Round & a Bout” arrived in 1990, after which, with contributions from sessions musicians Steve Nieve, Bruce Hornsby, and Matt Irving, the group issued the full-length “Play” in 1991. With little label backing the album performed poorly, and following the record drummer Lavis went to play in Jools Hollands’ big band. The record “Some Fantastic Place” was released in 1993, debuting at No. 26 in the UK, followed by “Ridiculous” in 1995, and the compilations “Piccadilly Collections” and “Excess Moderation”. Having completed their contractual obligations to A&M, Squeeze signed with independent Quixotic Records for their 1998 studio release “Domino”.

Live reviews

One of the television highlights of 2015 has been "Cradle To Grave", a light-hearted slab of early 70's nostalgia that has seen Danny Baker's adolescent adventures brought to the screen. Responsible for much of the show's jaunty soundtrack is one of the world's finest songwriting partnerships, Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, who, with "Cradle To The Grave" have released the first album of new material under the Squeeze banner since 1998's "Domino".

Wednesday evening found the band at Sage Gateshead towards the tail end of a successful UK tour proving that like a fine wine, they just get better with age. While Difford and Tilbrook remain Squeeze's core, both drummer Simon Hanson and keyboardist Stephen Large are familiar faces to Squeeze fans and they have been joined by Lucy Shaw on bass and, for much of the set, Melvin Duffy on pedal steel guitar.

Opening with a high tempo trio of "Hourglass", "Is That Love" and "Another Nail In My Heart" the band were quickly into their stride, and while the usual parade of tried and trusted pop perfection was offered - "Labelled With Love", "Goodbye Girl", "Black Coffee in Bed", "Some Fantastic Place", "Tempted", "Pulling Mussels" - Squeeze were justifiably pleased to bring us plenty of new songs from "Cradle To The Grave".

Introducing, "Happy Days", Tilbrook commented how nice it was to hear a new song of theirs being played on the radio after all these years and, truth be told, both "Happy Days" and the title track are classic Squeeze songs that could hold their own on any Squeeze album regardless of era. But it was also nice to hear several other tracks from the new album such as "Everything", "Open", "Only 15" and "Nirvana" too and cover versions of Jeannie C. Reilly's "Harper Valley PTA" and Tom Waits' "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" were a pleasant surprise. Squeeze are also happy to trawl their catalogue and pull out some "deep" cuts such as "The Elephant Ride" from 1982's "Sweets From A Stranger" album, performed here solo by Tilbrook on the wurlitzer organ and "The Truth" from 1991's "Play".

Mid-set, Difford invited the audience to leave their seats and move around a little to "Slap and TIckle"' and from that point everyone remained on their feet until the final numbers - singalong versions of "Cool For Cats" and "Take Me I'm Yours" the latter of which, to the crowd's delight saw the band members swap their instruments for acoustics and wander off the side of the stage, along the front row and out through the audience to the lobby where they took some seats and held a meet and greet and signing session.

Opening for Squeeze was the punk-poet himself, Dr John Cooper Clarke. Almost certainly one of the few people whose silhouette looks exactly as it did back in 1977, JCC proved a real crowd pleaser cracking jokes and performing a number of pieces including "I Wanna Be Yours", "Beasley Street" and "Evidently Chickentown" all of which can be found on his new compilation "Anthologia" as well as newer material such as "Trouble at Mall".

I was wonderfully surprised by the quality of the show. The band has had it's up's and downs in recent time but both Glen Tilbrook and Chris Difford lead a tight band including 2 drummers, 2 keyboards, accordion, steele guitar, etc. (special mention to Simon Hanson on drums) through 23 songs across the wide spectrum of their albums from Squeeze to the most recent, The Knowledge.

They covered the hits of course but also were not shy about going deeper, it was an almost perfect setlist. You realize how prolific their writing is over time. The casual fan knows Tempted and a few others, but as they opened with Footprints (Babylon and On), perfect vibe to open with, continued staying away from biggest albums until song 4-Pulling Muscles. Other notable moments The Day I Got Home(Play), a slower matured version of King George St (Cosi Fan Tutti Fruti), perfect renditions of early hits Up The Junction and Goodbye Girl and a thumping set closure with If I Didn't Love You which the entire band were perfectly in sync and blowing the doors off the Holland Center.

Glen Tilbrook (in his 60's?) voice was outstanding, hit everything, I thought I had time-traveled back to 1982. The acoustic version of smash hit Tempted was right on the mark, bring the Hammond B-3 organ sound at the end forming a powerful conclusion to a simplified start including an audience sing-along. There was another 10-15 great songs they could have played but I can't complain with what they laid out. Some Fantastic Place the most notable song left out, There at the Top, and I held out for Striking Matches (a potentially perfect live song). I also valued hearing Loves Crashing Waves from Difford & Tilbrook solo effort (better than critics gave them credit for).

Difford and Tilbrook were the only original members. I was a giant fan of Gilson Lavis on drums with the original keyboardist Jools Holland-tremendous stage presence/entertainer but the backup band was excellent -tight, it all worked beautifully.

KT Tunstall was a strong opener. It was my first visit to the Holland Center in Omaha and it is a great concert hall, better than anything we have in Kansas City, great sightlines, acoustics, and professional staff.

Please reacquaint yourself with this band, best songwriters of a generation, the depth of their work is what most do not realize.

Squeeze Squeeze came on the seen in the earlier 80’s and it didn’t take long for the London act to gain a cult following. In a similar style to other iconic London bands such as Madness and The Jam they wonderful crafted songs telling the stories of their every day working class lives. In a happy ‘tongue in cheek’ way they sing about all the highs and lows, mischief, troubled romances and many more issues one may come across. Anyone can surely listen to the songs and smile in recognition of such experiences.

The band was made up of Difford and Tilbrook, two wonderfully talented lyricists and songwriters, not to mention an extremely underrated guitarist in Tilbrook. Then with Lavis on drums, who was considered one of the best drummers at the time and Jools Holland on Keys, they had all the tools to make them infamous! They got themselves a reputation for being a wonderful live act. With all the members full of energy and with a repertoire of chart topper such as, Pulling Mussels’ ‘Slap and Tickle’ and ‘Up The Junction’ they are a spectacle l not to be missed. A class, feel good British band! One of the best of the 80’s!

They started off with great energy and the 1st 5 songs were really well played. The set then took a bit of a nose-dive, then they got back into the swing of things with a fabulous rendition of 'Labelled with Love' - that was followed by a a whole string of hits (a couple of covers, and two newer songs which were excellent 'Cradle to the Grave' and 'Happy Days') - culminating with Cool for Cats and Take me I'm Yours for the encore.

We had a really good view of the band and they were in good spirits - overall and excellent evening out to see one of Britains best ever pop bands. Highly recommended to catch them before they decide to quite forever.

The set list is pretty much the same as the one that can be found here: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/squeeze/2015/indigo2-london-england-33f450f1.html

Holy shit that show was better than anticipated. Might have been the youngest person in the crowd. Expected a bunch of seat-ridden geriatrics but Squeeze got them off their asses. Everyone was up by Cool for Cats. Tempted about brought down the house.

Time has killed most groups that have been around this long, for squeeze it has only made them more delectable like a fine wine. That last part I'm just guessing I'm the douche in the crowd with a PBR.

Also their opening band was Look Park. Never had heard of them but the voice was familiar. Now I know. Wish they had created a song called Stacy's Grandma.

Met Bernie Sanders brother after the show. Found it was the guitarist for Look Park. Badass.

Keep rocking folks. I'll keep listening.

Following a superb opening set by 9 Below Zero in support , enter stage right Squeeze. The band has enjoyed and rightly so considering the huge songwriting skills of Tillbrook and Difford a huge resurgence of popularity. Taking many songs from the new album The Knowledge, which were rightly well received , and surrounding with old classics was a balance that worked . Came away thinking they might not be in the first flush of youth but the energy and sheer songwriting power lifts this band into lofty heights . I just hope those there on the day were aware of what they just witnessed , genius of master craftsmen at the top of their game ! If they come to your town just go you owe to yourself you work hard ; this is entertainment !

Thoroughly enjoyed the gig. Played all my old favourites and many others as well.

For me the sound wasn't quite right, I always enjoyed their lyrics but at times the music drowned out the vocals which I think is down to the mixing gurus. I also felt they hit every song hard which worked for many but not for all off them.

My highlights were Labelled with Love (I could hear the lyrics) Slap & Tickle (which was just Glen and Chris - felt they could have done the whole gig this way and it would have been awesome) Cool for Cats and Take me I'm yours which has always been a favourite.

All in all an enjoyable night out and a must for all Squeeze fans as they played songs that they hadn't done live for years....

Pretty mixed feelings here.

-Squeeze had a lot of less well known songs for the first 2/3 of the show. And most of those pieces were frankly a bit boring and low energy IMO. [I realize bands want to play other songs than their hits from 35 years ago. But I just wasn't excited about most of the songs they selected.]

-The last 1/3 of the show they played many well known Squeeze songs and a couple of Difford & Tilbrook songs. Most of these would be songs up to "Babylon and On" album ('88). The band was very tight on all of these songs. This was much more enjoyable.

-"Black Coffee In Bed" as their final song is a fine choice. I wasn't thrilled with the jam band session the song turned in to.

Show was great. After SO many years and thousands of shows the band was very enthusiastic and seemed to be having great fun. The crowd was VERY into it, so much so that Tillford kept thanking the audience for it's enthusiasm. They played a good variety of songs and hit all the big hits. X was really good too - I didn't realize they were opening and that was a big bonus. That said, the venue itself is well organized, fairly clean, and fun. However, the acoustics, at least so the stage level, were pretty bad, very little accuracy and balance to the vocals and low to mid bass was very mushy and the treble (high guitars, etc.) were very weak. Impact of drums and stuff were good.

What can we say? Saw Squeeze for the first time at Camp Bestival in 2016 and promised ourselves we would see them again as we loved them so much and were in touching distance of them! Saw them at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on Friday 6 October and they were as amazing as we had remembered. To see and hear them at their own gig for a full two hours was wonderful. Two hours of hits and new songs and energy and Glenn and Chris! Wow! Wonderful, fantastic, amazing we would see them again and again and again. Looking forward to hearing the new album and will defo be booking tickets for their next tour. Well done boys and your lady bass player!! YOU WERE AND ARE AMAZING!!

Squeeze 50th Anniversary Tour

Stockton globe.

Fri 15 Nov 2024

Book Squeeze 50th Anniversary Tour Tickets at Stockton Globe Official Box Office

A statement from the band:After many years of fundraising and awareness activities with Squeeze and as a solo artist, Glenn Tilbrook , recently accepted an invitation to become an Ambassador for the anti-poverty charity, the Trussell Trust .

Watch Kelly Clarkson sing Heart's Crazy On You with Nancy Wilson on guitar while Ann Wilson looks on

A nn and Nancy Wilson of Heart have been everywhere of late as they promote their current Royal Flush tour. They appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon , where a version of Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse Of The Heart was performed during an actual eclipse . They visited with Howard Stern, where Led Zeppelin's Going To California was covered. And now they've appeared with the queen of daytime television, on the Kelly Clarkson Show .

While on the show, the host sang a short version of Heart's debut American single Crazy on You , after Ann Wilson revealed how she approached the original.

"That was the first song I ever recorded as a singer in a studio," says Ann. "You were talking about feeling, and that's what I had. I didn't have a bunch of technique or anything yet, but I definitely felt how to say certain words, how to jump in early sometimes, how to 'blue note' things... just feel that kind of stuff."

Ann Wilson also told the story about the origins of another Heart classic, Barracuda . It's a story she's told plenty of times before, but this time with an added detail: the sleazy record company man who inspired the lyric was wearing a pornographic wristwatch.

"We were in Detroit opening up for The Kinks , says Ann. Back in those days, after your show – especially if you're a baby band like we were – your dressing room would be full of all these industry types. A lot of satin jackets. And they could be pretty sleazy.

"And there's this one guy in particular who had this pornographic watch on – like one of those watches that if you move your hand, it'll do something sexy. Naughty . And so he asked me, 'Hey Annie, you know, how's your lover?' And I went, 'Oh, Michael's fine. He is right over there.' 'Cause I was with Michael Fisher at the time. And he said, 'No, ya sister. Your sister, your lover.'

"It was like, if there's two chicks it has to be sexy, you know? It made me really mad. And I went back to the hotel and wrote the words to Barracuda."

Heart's Royal Flush tour runs until September 22 in Morrison, Colorado. In the midst of the US run, on which they'll be joined by  Cheap Trick , the band will travel to Europe and the UK for summer shows, playing a series of festival dates alongside their first arena gigs on the continent in eight years. The second run of US dates includes a trio of stadium shows with Def Leppard and Journey . Squeeze  will play support at the UK shows.

The cost of bread, biscuits and beer could increase this year due to the impact of the unusually wet autumn and winter on UK harvests.

Research suggests that production of wheat, oats, barley and oilseed rape could drop by four million tonnes (17.5%) compared with 2023.

The wet weather has resulted in lower levels of planting, while flooding and storms over winter caused farmers more losses.

The predictions come just as the rate of price increases on many food items begins to slow as inflation falls.

The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) analysed forecasts from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHBD) and government yield data.

It found a "real risk" of beer, biscuits and bread becoming more expensive if the poor harvest increases costs for producers, according to its lead analyst Tom Lancaster.

Beer prices could be affected because the wet weather is still disrupting the planting of spring crops such as barley, the ECIU said.

And potatoes might also see a price hike in the coming months, with growers warning of a major shortage in the autumn due to persistent wet weather.

When I think about the toys of my childhood - my pink Barbie car, my Gameboy Micro, my collection of Pokemon cards - I can't tell you where they went.

Maybe they were shipped off to a charity shop at some point... Or perhaps they're in the attic?

While my hot pink Gameboy Micro is lost to the void of time (or a cardboard box somewhere in my mum's house), other versions of it are selling on eBay for £100 or more.

And there are Pokemon cards selling for anything from a tenner to hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

It's possible you also have items at home that are a collector's dream.

Gumtree says its collectables category is already proving to be a "hotbed of activity" this year, with listings up 22% in 2024 so far.

Its most popular items include rare stamps, coins, war memorabilia and Pokemon cards.

Spring is often the most popular time for buying and selling collectibles, with demand spiking in March and April.

We've enlisted the help of TV presenter and collectables expert Tracy Martin to give an idea of what could make you an easy buck.

Old toys making a 'retro comeback'

Tracy explains that while trends change, vintage toys tend to stand the test of time.

"Toys are always going to be popular because they tap into nostalgia, our childhood memories," she says, explaining that adults like to buy the toys they used to have.

Perhaps you were into cars, and you've got some old diecast vehicles from Matchbox, Corgi or Dinky Toys.

A quick look on toy auction site Vectis.co.uk shows a Corgi Toys "James Bond" Aston Martin estimated to sell for between £600 to £700 - while others are likely to fetch £50 to £60.

Sindy dolls are also particularly sought after - particularly those from the 1960s - and Barbie dolls from the 1990s too.

Pokemon cards have seen a "massive surge", Tracy says, with people paying "thousands and thousands of pounds" for good unopened sets.

She's even seen examples of people paying £16,000 upwards.

Another up-and-coming market is games consoles, such as Gameboys, vintage consoles and PlayStations, which are making a "retro comeback".

What else could earn you some cash?

Tracy says there's currently a surge in people wanting to buy "mid century" furniture, which is dated to roughly 1945 to 1965 and typically uses clean lines and has a timeless feel.

Vintage Danish furniture is sought after, particularly tables and chairs with good designer names such as Wegner, Verner Panton and Arne Jacobsen.

Prices range from the low hundreds into the thousands.

People will also look out for vintage framed prints by artists such as Tretchikoff, J.H. Lynch and Shabner - these can range in price from £50 upwards to a few hundred pounds plus.

Vintage clothes, handbags and shoes can fetch a good price - but you can also invest in modern pieces.

Tracy suggests looking out for good classic designs with high-end designer names such as Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton.

Modern designers such as Irregular Choice, Vendula and Lulu Guinness are also collected.

Collaborations with designers and celebrities can do well as they're often limited edition.

For example, Tracy says the H&M x Paco Rabanne maxi silver sequin dress retailed at £279.99 last year but now sells for in excess of £600.

When it comes to shoes, "the quirkier the design the better" - so look out for brands such as Irregular Choice and Joe Browns.

Converse and Dr Martens collaborations also do well, depending on the design and condition, as well as Adidas and Nike limited edition trainers.

What's the best way to sell?

Tracy recommends to always research before selling your items, as they might perform better on different platforms and you can also get an idea of how much they sell for.

For example, Vinted can be a good place to sell clothes and shoes, while other items might be better suited for sale on Gumtree, eBay or Etsy.

Tracy's favourite way to sell is through auction - especially if there are specialist sales.

Vectis is one of the biggest and most popular for toy selling.

Interests in different periods and items can go up and down, but for the time being vintage pieces from the 1980s and 90s are popular.

How much you'll be able to get from an item often takes into account its rarity, condition, whether it reflects a period in time, and if it's got a good name behind it.

You never know - you might be sitting on a treasure trove.

Annual mortgage repayments have increased by up to 70% since 2021, according to new data from Zoopla .

The biggest impact of rising interest rates has been in southern England where house prices are higher.

Across the South West, South East and East of England, the annual mortgage cost for an average home is £5,000 higher than previously. This rises to £7,500 in London.

But the universal uptick in mortgage costs has been less pronounced in other parts of the UK, with the North East seeing a £2,350 increase.

In a bid to tackle inflation, the Bank of England has raised the base rate from 0.1% in December 2021 to a 16-year high of 5.25% now.

The Zoopla research looked at the average home buyer taking out a 70% loan-to-value mortgage.

This week seems to be starting where last week left off - with three major lenders announcing further hikes in mortgage rates.

Amid uncertainty of the timing of interest rate cuts from the Bank of England  this year, swap rates (which dictate how much it costs lenders to lend) have been rising in recent weeks.

Financial markets currently see two rate cuts by the Bank of England this year.

We've reported on a string of rate bumps from the high street over the last 10 days, and this morning NatWest, Santander and Nationwide moved.

In its second hikes announcement in less than a week, NatWest laid out increases across its full range of residential and buy-to-let fixed deals of up to 0.22%.

Santander, meanwhile, announced increases for both fixed and tracker deals across their residential and buy-to-let products - up to 0.25%.

The same hikes are being imposed for a range of Nationwide deals.

All of these will kick in tomorrow.

Amit Patel, adviser at Trinity Finance, told Newspage it was "not a great start to the week".

"This is not good news for borrowers," he said.

Where will the base rate go this year?

The majority of the bets, according to LSEG data, are on the first cut coming in August (previously this was June) and the second in December.

This would take Bank rate from the current level of 5.25% to 4.75%.

Disabled people could receive vouchers instead of monthly payments under proposed changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

The changes could see people being provided with either one-off grants for specific costs such as home adaptation, or being directed to "alternative means of support" rather than financial support.

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride is set to announce plans today to overhaul the way disability benefits work.

In a Green Paper due to be published alongside Mr Stride's statement to the Commons, ministers will set out plans to reform Personal Independence Payments (PIP), the main disability benefit, through changes to eligibility criteria and assessments.

The plans also include proposals to "move away from a fixed cash benefit system", meaning people with some conditions, such as depression and anxiety, will no longer receive regular payments but rather get improved access to treatment if their condition does not involve extra costs.

Speaking to Sky News earlier, Mr Stride said: "I want us to have a grown-up, sensible conversation about a benefit called PIP that has not been reviewed in over a decade.

"And I want to ask the question, is it fit for purpose given the world that we're in today, in which mental health issues sadly present more of an issue than they did a decade ago."

By James Sillars , business reporter

A fresh high for the FTSE 100 to start the week.

The index of leading shares in London was 0.5% up at 8,179 in early dealing.

The gains were led by miners and financial stocks.

Dragging on the performance were some consumer-facing brands including JD Sports and Flutter Entertainment.

One other development of note to mention is that stubbornly high oil price.

A barrel of Brent crude is currently trading almost 1% down on the day.

But it remains at $88 a barrel.

The market has been pulled by various forces this month, with hopes of a rebound in demand in China among them.

The latest decline is said to reflect peace talks being held between Israel and Hamas.

A demand for smaller homes has driven growth in UK property prices early in 2024, according to research by Halifax.

Data from the bank's house price index suggests annual property price growth hit 1.9% in February this year - a significant rise from -4.1% just three months prior.

That equates to a rise in prices of £5,318 over the past year.

It follows interest rates stabilising, Halifax says, after a sharp rise over the past two years which squeezed mortgage affordability.

A key driver behind rising prices, Halifax says, has been first-time buyers, who made up 53% of all homes bought with a mortgage in 2023 - the highest proportion since 1995.

And it's smaller homes that have recorded the biggest increases in price growth in the early part of this year - with buyers adjusting their expectations to compensate for higher borrowing costs.

Flats and terraced houses made up 57% of all homes purchased by first-time buyers last year.

This varies by region - for example, in London, flats and terraced homes accounted for 90% of all first-time buyer purchases.

Challenges remain

However, Amanda Bryden, head of Halifax mortgages, said "it's important not to gloss over the challenges" facing the UK housing market, given the "impact of higher interest rates on mortgage affordability" and "continued lack of supply of new homes".

"But scratch beneath the surface and there is a more nuanced story, one which shows that demand for different property types in different parts of the country can vary hugely," she added.

"As interest rates have stabilised and buyers adjust to the new economic reality of owning a home, one way to compensate for higher borrowing costs is to target smaller properties.

"This is especially true among first-time buyers, who have proven to be resilient over recent years, and now account for the largest proportion of homes purchased with a mortgage in almost 30 years."

Every Monday we get an expert to answer your money problems or consumer disputes. Find out how to submit yours at the bottom of this post. Today's question is...

I had a company coat the exterior of my house with a rubberised paint product in November 2022. The original cost was £3,280 - though there was a discount. This came with a written 10-year warranty. The product started to fail after five months (peeling off). I first contacted them one year ago, on 3 April 2023, and the company keeps fobbing me off, blaming bad weather for not resolving issues. They don't come round when they say they will. What can I do? Robert Anderson, 77, Scotland

We asked consumer disputes expert Scott Dixon, from complaintsresolver.co.uk , to pick up this one...

This falls under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which states that any faults found within the first six months are considered to have been there at the point of purchase (or in this case, application).

You are entitled to one free repair under S49 Consumer Rights Act 2015 which states that every contract to supply a service is to be treated as including a term that the trader must perform the service with reasonable care and skill.

Traders can only have one crack at the same fault - if that fails, you are entitled to a refund/replacement.

You have two options: make a warranty claim/pursue a remedy under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

How did you pay for it? If you paid (even just the deposit) by credit card, you can make a S75 claim against the credit card provider who is jointly liable under S75 Consumer Credit Act 1974.

If the trader is unwilling to remedy it, seek at least three quotes from other traders to price putting the job right. You can get another trader to remedy the job and invoice the original trader for the work.

I know what you're thinking: what happens if they refuse to pay?

Options and next steps

If all else fails... You could take your case to the small claims court if it was England, or follow Simple Procedure in Scotland .

Before you file a claim, send screenshots to the company of the court papers setting your case out and demanding a refund within seven days. Tell the company that if they fail to do so, you will lodge a claim via Simple Procedure.

It is a relatively easy, inexpensive route and is designed for disputes such as this. Court fees are based on the amount of money you want to claim.

This may resolve the dispute. If it does not, you can proceed and file the small claim papers online.

Another option is to file for their bankruptcy as a creditor, which is free. It effectively freezes their bank accounts and credit lines and locks their business down until it is resolved. You can find an SD1 form to do this here .

I have done this before and it works like a charm. You need to send any documents by recorded delivery. This is a last resort if you cannot resolve your dispute.

I would also report this firm to Trading Standards. Ensure that you point out that they are deliberately selling products and carrying out defective work without due care and skill, which is fraudulent and illegal. You have proof of this so make sure you provide it.

Finally, leave reviews online too.

Money team note : We got in touch with the company involved, who said they had agreed to recoat the building at no cost but that dry days were needed before and after to fit the product in line with the manufacturer's guidelines. They said they had contacted Mr Anderson last week. We decided not to name the company as it is a small business - but we'll follow up this case in summer.

This feature is not intended as financial advice - the aim is to give an overview of the things you should think about.  Submit your dilemma or consumer dispute via - and please leave your contact details as we cannot follow up consumer disputes without them.

Britons could face higher food prices, and even empty supermarket shelves, as new post-Brexit border fees are introduced this week, industry figures have warned.

A maximum charge of £145 will apply on imports of plant and animal products, such as cheese and fish, entering the UK through the Port of Dover and Eurotunnel from Tuesday.

"The fundamental change is huge to the nation's food supply," Nigel Jenney, chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC), told the Money blog when we first covered this story in January.

"I would certainly expect to see price rises because these costs simply couldn't be absorbed by the industry."

James Barnes, chairman of the Horticultural Trades Association, said this month that the policy "feels like it is constructed on the back of an envelope at best" and that the charges would "undoubtedly increase costs" and increase the likelihood of empty shelves in supermarkets.

He said as well as higher prices and a more limited variety of products available in UK shops and restaurants, "we now might begin to observe a decline of EU businesses trading into the UK, simply because they have been priced out".

The new rules explained

The new rules, known as the Border Target Operating Model (BTOM), are intended to protect biosecurity by imposing controls on plant and animal products considered a "medium" risk. These include five categories of cut flowers, cheese and other dairy produce, chilled and frozen meat, and fish.

From 31 January, each shipment had to be accompanied by a health certificate, provided by a local vet in the case of animal produce, and, from Tuesday, shipments will be subject to physical checks at the British border.

There is also the prospect of delays caused by inspections of faulty paperwork, which could derail supply chains that rely entirely on fast turnaround of goods.

The policy has been delayed multiple times and earlier this month the Financial Times reported that the government would not "turn on" the checks this week because border systems were not fully ready. The government said this was not true - but indicated they would initially focus on higher-risk products.

The fee will be charged per type of product imported, and will vary from £10 to £29 depending on the risk products present. It will be capped at £145 for mixed consignments.

A government spokesperson said this was "within and at the bottom end of the range which we consulted with industry on".

They added: "The charge is designed to recover the costs of operating our world-class border facilities where essential biosecurity checks will protect our food supply, farmers and environment against costly disease outbreaks entering the UK through the short straits."

The fees will not apply to goods brought into the UK for personal use, the government said.

EU business 'could stop trading with UK'

Marc Forgione, director general of the Institute of Export and International Trade (IEIT), said there was another risk beyond price rises and potential shrinkflation.

He told the Money blog earlier this year: "There is also a concern that has been raised with me by some UK-based businesses that their suppliers in the EU will frankly take a view that it's too complicated to deal with these changes and withdraw from the market."

Mr Forgione said that over time the UK will have "the most efficient border in the world", due to digitisation and the BTOM's assessment of goods based on risk, but it will create friction for EU businesses where there was none.

What has the government said?

A spokesperson told us when we first covered this story in January: "We remain committed to delivering the most advanced border in the world.

"The changes we're bringing in will help keep the UK safe, while protecting our food supply chains and our agricultural sector from disease outbreaks that would cause significant economic harm."

Spoof Tycoon Brian Butterfield.

Brian Butterfield: ‘Selling candy to babies is harder than it looks ... they don’t carry money’

The business mogul – who looks suspiciously like comic Peter Serafinowicz – knows his stuff: he invested in Blockbuster and advised Liz Truss. Now he’s sharing his ‘wisdom’ with a book and tour

I t is 9am on a cold spring morning, and I’m standing in central London outside posh bank Coutts & Co, staring at my own breath, waiting for Brian Butterfield. This is our third attempt at meeting due to “diary issues”. Butterfield dropped his diary down the toilet, twice.

You’ll know Butterfield, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the comedian Peter Serafinowicz , as one of the UK’s most prominent businessmen alongside Lord Sugar, Sir Richard Branson and Sir Philip Green. (I ask why Butterfield hasn’t been made a sir yet. “I was Liz Truss’s leading economic adviser, so I was surprised not to be offered a knighthood in her honours list.”)

Butterfield made his live stage debut in 2023 with Brian Butterfield’s Call of Now, a self-improving business seminar that resembles a Ted Talk, or “BRIAN Talk”, as Butterfield puts it. The tour was a sellout, although Butterfield later denies this. “I have not sold out! I have always stuck to my business principles,” he protests. He is now readying himself for more live dates in May to coincide with his first book, There’s No Business Like Business.

“Are you here for the interview?” he asks, arriving at pavement level. Butterfield travels by Sinclair C5 – the battery-powered recumbent tricycle from 1985. “I signed up for a 40-year lease. Only two payments left. I’m thinking about trading in for a C6. You should get one. You don’t pay the congestion charge and it’s great for going under car park barriers.” Butterfield appears in fine fettle. Hair: tidy. Moustache: neatly trimmed. (“You need to look as good as your business.”) His trademark grey suit looks freshly pressed. “It’s made from a material I invented myself – Brylon – a blend of wool, nylon and asbestos. I’ve only been able to wear it since Brexit as it contravenes several European health regulations.”

Butterfield rarely grants interviews. He is not press-shy, but time is money, and he’s a busy man. Eventually, his PA Briana – who sounds suspiciously like Butterfield himself on the phone – manages to squeeze me in. (“I’ve had to let Briana go,” Butterfield tells me later. “He was hopeless. I mean, she .”) The proviso is that I don’t mind if Butterfield is “on duty”. Who wouldn’t want exclusive access to witness the extraordinary business titan at work?

Coutts is the bank that infamously closed Nigel Farage’s account in 2023 . “Farage owes me money!” snorts Butterfield. “£2,000 from 2010 when Butterfield Aeronautics serviced his two-seater aircraft.”

How long has he banked with Coutts? “Oh, I don’t bank with Coutts,” he scoffs. “I’m offering Coutts the chance to bank with me .”

“What’s safer than a safe?” he says, his voice raising an octave as he walks into the bank. The pitch has begun. “Butterfield Secure Banking, where you can entrust all your money, gold and cryptocurrency. It’s the most secure banking service in the world … ”

Deborah, the Coutts receptionist, looks baffled. “Have you got an appointment, sir?” she asks.

“Never mind that, here’s how it works,” he says, handing over a takeaway menu for Chicago Chicken. “Oh, hang on.” He pats his pockets. “I had 100 leaflets printed this morning. Come on, Stephen. Let’s come back this afternoon.” Stephen? Apparently he’s talking to me. I’ll correct him later.

Butterfield was born in “19 … something or other”. He’s unwilling to be more specific. “I want people to see me as a young, fresh-faced businessman,” he reasons. “I fear investors would be disinterested if they knew I was 65 … 66 next month.”

Brian Butterfield (or is it Peter Serafinowicz?) on tour.

Butterfield grew up to working-class parents. His education then is a surprise. “You’ve caught me. I’m an Old Etonian,” he says. “My parents could only afford one day’s tuition. Still, I learned a lot and made strong friendships in that lunch break.” He’s aware he hasn’t matched the heights of other Old Etonians. “I didn’t become prime minister, like Boris Johnson. Or a helicopter pilot, like Prince William.”

His first job was a sweet shop he set up outside a nursery. “Selling candy to babies is harder than it looks because babies don’t carry money.” He then worked as the lord mayor’s croupier and as a circus horse dentist. “That was intense. And also in tents. Very big tents.”

Butterfield is also responsible for The Butterfield Diet, a revolutionary programme where you almost starve yourself for five days, gorge on anything for one day (“treat day”), then recover on the seventh. Butterfield is adamant he spawned the intermittent fasting craze. He also says he supplied £120m-worth of PPE to the government, but is somehow the only contractor who lost money. “I’m still paying back several Chinese manufacturers. I believe every failure is an opportunity to learn a new lesson,” he adds.

After the Coutts false start, our next meeting is lunch with fellow captain of business Sir Richard Branson. I ask where we’ll be dining. “Pret a Manger on Tottenham Court Road. It’s his favourite one. As Branson says: ‘It’s easy to become a millionaire, but to remain one, you have to be careful with your money.’ That’s why Branson shops at Lidl, while Sugar is more of an Aldi man.”

after newsletter promotion

A table for three, please. But there’s bad news. Branson has WhatsApped to cancel, Butterfield says. There’s a crisis at his flagship business, Virgin Olive Oil. “It’s typical Branson,” says Butterfield. “Today is his turn to pay.” I turn this to my favour: some alone time with Butterfield, to find out what makes the great man tick. “Good idea,” he says. “I actually forgot to print out your CV, so you asking me questions is a smart use of our time.”

Slightly confused, I ask what Butterfield has learned from his live shows so far.

“ Lots of things,” he says. “For example, I learned that the money you make from the tickets should be more than the cost of hiring the venue. Hopefully the second leg will help pay off my debts from the first.” He touches the plastic tray. “Touch wood.”

“Everyone is different. What works for one person may not work for another,” he continues. “But you can’t do a personal seminar for each person. I did try but it was very time-consuming and not cost-effective.”

I ask if Butterfield truly believes that business seminars can transform people’s lives. “There are a lot of charlatans out there charging a small fortune for the promise of success,” he says. “Don’t trust anyone who tells you they know the secrets to business success. That’s just one of the business secrets I reveal in my seminar.”

With the cost of living crisis, what advice would he give to the public? “Never give up. Keep working hard and eventually you’ll achieve your goals. I just wish I could speak to my younger self. Tell him to hang in there … I’d also tell him not to invest all his money in Woolworths and Blockbuster Video.”

Butterfield goes silent. I ask if he’s OK. He says he’s better than OK. “A phone that allows you to speak to your younger self? Write that down, Stephen. I want to pitch it on Dragons’ Den.”

The conversation moves on to Butterfield’s personal life. I realise that, beyond the asbestos suit, I know very little about him. Is he married, for example? “I am married,” he says. “To business.”

The alarm on Butterfield’s phone suddenly goes off. “Well, it was lovely to meet you, Stephen,” he says, extending a hand. “Congratulations! You’ve got the job!” He hands over a crumpled piece of paper. “Could you pick up my dry cleaning and click-and-collect from Tesco?” He tells me he’s got to rush off to a meeting with Guardian journalist Rich Pelley who’s writing a profile piece on him. Before I can point out I’m from the Guardian and not interviewing for the job of his new PA, he’s out of the door. Thanks, Brian. See you in the office tomorrow.
