Tour of Britain: Wout van Aert attacks solo to win stage 5

Jumbo-Visma continue to dominate

Jumbo-Visma extended their winning run at the Tour of Britain to five days, continuing the Dutch team’s dominant week as Wout van Aert soloed to victory a kilometre from the line to win stage 5 in Felixstowe.

The day looked all set to conclude with another sprint finish, and likely another Olav Kooij win, as Jumbo-Visma controlled the race in the closing kilometres, but rather than set things up for the 21-year-old, the squad pulled a surprise move heading under the flamme rouge.

With Van Aert seemingly ready to provide the final touch to another sublime lead-out as Edoardo Affini pulled off the front, Kooij let a gap go heading around a left-hand bend.

That move let Van Aert steal a march on their sprint rivals, who were caught totally unprepared for a late attack. Nobody could muster a response from behind on the headwind run to the line, leaving Van Aert to claim his third win of the season and with it the race lead.

Three seconds behind him, Ethan Vernon (Great Britain) led home the peloton, outpacing Danny van Poppel (Bora-Hansgrohe) to fill out the podium.

Jumbo-Visma had played their part in controlling the peloton for much of the day but were caught out at an unmarshalled corner 8km from the finish line. The team rallied around on the suburban run-in, however, making it back to the front for the final 3km alongside Trinity Racing, Bolton Equities Black Spoke, and Uno-X.

First Nathan Van Hooydonck and then Edoardo Affini took up the work on the front, setting up another big sprint finish. But clearly, the team had a different idea, one that caught the riders from Movistar, Bora-Hansgrohe, and Ineos Grenadiers behind by surprise.

The late attack provided welcome respite from a procession of sprint finishes at the race, even if it was yet another win for the Dutch powerhouse team – their 57th of the 2023 season.

Over four hours earlier, Callum Ormiston (Global 6), Joey Rosskopf (Q36.5), and Abram Stockman (TDT-Unibet) had jumped from the peloton to make the breakaway on the longest day of the race – a 192km out-and-back course hitting the North Sea coast.

The trio got away after an early move including mountain classification leader James Fouché (Bolton Equities Black Spoke) went away on the first of two third-classification climbs of the day. The New Zealander took his KOM total to 37 over the top – 17 up on second-placed Harry Tanfield (TDT-Unibet) before the break established itself 162km out.

10km later they passed the second and last climb of the day and went on to enjoy a three-minute advantage over the peloton, which was controlled, predictably, by Jumbo-Visma, Movistar, and Ineos Grenadiers.

The two WorldTour teams largely held the gap around the two-minute mark on a quiet mid-section of the stage, while the breakaway trio entered the final 50km at 1:50 up on the peloton, though the gap gradually came down as the finish line loomed, hitting the minute mark at 30km out as the pace was upped behind.

At 20 to go, still with the same teams leading the chase, the break had just 30 seconds in hand as Ormiston dropped away from the break. The remaining duo battled on, but Stockman dropped 12km out before Rosskopf – who did well to push on alone – was eventually brought back 5km from the line.

Jumbo-Visma’s brief mishap 8km out provided some drama on the run towards Felixstowe, but they soon got back to the front, lining up in their familiar lead-out formation for the final 3km. Other teams joined them in the pacemaking, but nobody could wrest control for a sprint which never came.

In the end, it was a day which saw Olav Kooij finally beaten at the 2023 Tour of Britain, but it was another Jumbo-Visma man, the race’s superstar in Wout van Aert, who took the spoils.

Tour of Britain 2024 Stages and Routes

The first details of the 20th edition of the modern race will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Following the cancellation of the 2021 edition owing to the death of Her Majesty The Queen, organisers SweetSpot will continue to work with the local authorities who were due to host stages to explore opportunities to host the race in the future.

One of the most highly anticipated professional cycling events in the United Kingdom is all set to kick off in the first week of September. The Tour of Britain is gearing up for its 2021 edition, which will also be the 14th edition since the reincarnation of the event with several changes in 2004. The cycling Tour of Britain route was unveiled back in February 2021 with the addition of a time trial stage. It now means that the Tour of Britain 2021 has nine stages compared to 8 in recent years. Even those eight Tour of Britain stages were a bump up from the five stages the event used to have in 2004.

The Surprising Route

Tour of Britain 2021 race director Mick Bennett unveiled the cycling Tour of Britain route in the hope of keeping up with the recent momentum of popularity gathered by the event. Several changes to the Tour of Britain stages over the last few years have made it more competitive and brought it to the levels of Tour de France or Vuelta a Espana. Attracting the best riders in the world to the United Kingdom is one of the sole objectives of this event.

George Square in Glasgow will form the location for the start of the 2021 edition. The nine Tour of Britain stages will see riders cover just over 1300 km from September 4 to September 11. This will certainly take its toll on the riders, but there is a consensus that the 2021 edition will be slightly easier than the 2015 edition. Furthermore, there is an opportunity for riders to make use of every Tour of Britain stage to prepare well for the upcoming World Championships in Qatar. This reason alone is expected to increase general interest amongst riders in the competition.

Tour of Britain 2021 – Challenging Parts

The upcoming competition brings a lot of aspects like challenging races and sprint finishes. These are aspects which will have a lot to do at the World Championships. Glasgow last played host to the start of the event back in 2008. It provides a sprint finish to the Castle Douglas since there is no prominent climbs along the way. Stage two goes through various sections of the enchanting Lake District, which may not offer anything out of the blue for experienced riders. The Lake District has been a standard fare of the Tour of Britain in recent years. Even though much of the route will be familiar, riders will have to be prepared for the climb from Ambleside towards the end of the stage.

Stage three at the Congleton marks the beginning of the tough stages. As expected, the stage four takes its toll since it is the longest. As the competition enters into the final stages, riders go through Wales and Bath before a time trial event near London. The final stage will be a replica of the final stage in 2015, which received a lot of rave reviews. Each stage is tough and this will be on the minds of punters when it comes to Tour of Britain bet online.

The growing popularity of the event has also resulted in a number of punters looking for good Tour of Britain bet online opportunities. These opportunities are presented because of the Tour of Britain 2021 odds, which are once again leaning towards the favourites like Alberto Contador. Even though it makes a lot of sense to make an early judgement, Tour of Britain 2021 odds at a later stage will provide a more accurate picture about the favourites for the title.

Tour of Britain 2023 Route stage 5: Felixstowe - Felixstowe

On paper, crosswinds and echelons are the only possible things that could stand in the way of a bunch sprint. After all, the entire race is played out near the coast, mostly on exposed terrain. The only other possible obstacles appear early in the race. The climbs in Freston (900 metres at 3%) and Holbrook (500 metres at 3.2%) are done and dusted before kilometre 50.

The clockwise loop of stage 5 takes the riders through Suffolk’s quintessentially villages such as Hadleigh, Needham Market, Stowmarket, Framlingham, Leiston and Woodbridge.

Positioning will be essential when it comes to a sprint, as two 90 degrees lefthanders mark the last 600 metres.

Giant Crash Neutralizes 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné Stage 5

A large swathe of the peloton at the 2024 Critérium du Dauphiné fell in a giant pileup Thursday, with several ambulances attending the injured and race organizers canceling the day's racing.

The eight-day race is a warm-up for the Tour de France in three weeks time, and top riders Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic both fell, but appeared not to be badly hurt.

Race leader Evenepoel was left clutching the shoulder he injured in the Basque Country in April before clambering back on to his bike.

Organizers said they had canceled the stage because all the ambulances at their disposal were taking riders to hospitals.

"Due to the fact there are no ambulances to take care of the riders, because they are all busy going to different hospitals, the race will be neutralized," race organizers said.

The announcement means no times from Thursday's stage will be counted.

Two riders from the Visma team that won the previous two editions of the Tour de France lost key riders Dylan van Baarle and Steven Kruijswijk in Thursday's fall.

Both Evenepoel and Roglic fell at the Tour of the Basque Country two months ago and this is their first race back.

The pair are expected to challenge for overall victory in the Tour de France.

2024 Criterium du Dauphine

The peloton remounted and rode the remaining 20 kilometers to the finish line at Saint-Priest, where team buses and medics awaited them.

Evenepoel leads the race, with Roglic second at 33 seconds and Visma's Matteo Jorgenson third at 1minute, 4 seconds.

"I'm all right but look at my helmet," said Soudal rider Evenepoel. "My helmet saved me today. I fell on my shoulder again, and it's bleeding, but it should be OK. There's guys far worse off than me."

The race continues with three mountain stages in the Alps over the weekend.

Tour of Britain Women stage 3: Lorena Wiebes wins sprint

Lorena Wiebes won stage 3 of the Tour of Britain Women, SD Worx-Protime 's third straight victory in this year's race.

Led out by Lotte Kopecky in the green leader's jersey, Wiebes launched her sprint with 200 metres to go and pulled ahead. Charlotte Kool (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) challenged her but dropped her head in the final metres as Wiebes was a bike length ahead to take her team's third consecutive victory. Georgia Baker (Liv-AlUla-Jayco) finished third.

The stage had been dominated by a two-rider breakaway. Jo Tindley (Pro-Noctis-200° Coffee-Hargreaves Contracting) and Maddie Leech (Lifeplus-Wahoo) had attacked with 102km to go and built a gap of four minutes, but Leech suffered mechanical problems and had to drop back after the second QOM. Tindley continued on her own before being caught about 12km from the line.

After a late attack by Valerie Demey (VolkerWessels) was closed down, the sprint trains took over. SD Worx-Protime were in control, taking the lead onto the finishing straight and delivering Wiebes to victory.

Going into the final stage, Kopecky leads the GC with a 17-second buffer on Anna Henderson (Great Britain) and 32 seconds to Letizia Paternoster (Liv-AlUla-Jayco).

“The team did a really good job all day controlling the breakaway. We kept Christine [Majerus], Barbara [Guarischi], Lotte and me together for the final, and Christine delivered us really well through the corner in first position," Wiebes said after the podium ceremony.

"It was a really fast finish, and I was like, ‘oh, it’s only 200 metres to go’, so I started my sprint, and I was happy to deliver for the team. It's always nice to finish it off after the girls did so much work. There is one more day to go, so we go full for it again tomorrow."
