Brad Boimler

  • View history

Bradward "Brad" Boimler was a male Human who served in Starfleet as a command division junior officer during the mid- 24th century . He was assigned to the USS Cerritos under Captain Carol Freeman , then to the USS Titan under Captain William T. Riker . He was later transferred back to the Cerritos following a transporter accident . Although Boimler's high-strung emotionalism and immature need to gain the positive attention of his superiors is derided, his genuinely considerable talent and command potential as an officer is also being noticed.

Early life [ ]

Boimler was born in Modesto , California on Earth , where he grew up around the raisin vineyards ran by his family. He became a well versed and skilled raisin farmer but found the work unbearably dull, and would have preferred for the family to be doing something different, like making wine instead. He also disliked the flies attracted to the grapes, and how it would take a month to get rid of the smell of raisins from his hair. His dislike for this life was so intense that the fact that numerous comely female co-workers on the farm openly propositioning him was of no interest. ( LD : " Second Contact ", " wej Duj ", " Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus ", " Grounded ")

Prior to Stardate 57436.2 , Boimler had only visited four planets , including Vulcan . ( LD : " Second Contact ")

Starfleet career [ ]

Starfleet academy [ ].

At some point during his life, Boimler enlisted in Starfleet and attended Starfleet Academy , where he received no demerits and failed the Kobayashi Maru scenario seventeen times. He graduated and was commissioned as an officer in 2379 . Upon graduating, he was assigned to the Cerritos , where he bunked in Bunk A12003. ( LD : " Second Contact ", " Temporal Edict ", " Reflections ")

Boimler and Fletcher were close friends at the academy. ( LD : " Terminal Provocations ") While there, he took Ethics of Collecting , and chose to take some studies on the Tamarian language . ( LD : " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ", " wej Duj ") He also took matter synthesis as an elective. ( SNW : " Those Old Scientists ")

Brad Boimler giving Captain's Log

Boimler giving a Captain's log

In 2380, during a stop at Douglas Station , Boimler was wounded by fellow ensign Beckett Mariner . Mariner, who was drunk on Romulan whiskey , gave him a hard time for writing his own mock captain's log , then accidentally sliced his leg open with a bat'leth . He was treated and assigned as an orientation liaison to Ensign D'Vana Tendi . Later, while assisting in second contact efforts with the Galardonians , Captain Freeman asked Ensign Boimler to monitor Ensign Mariner's activities. Boimler eventually believed that he had caught her selling Federation weapons, but she had in fact been giving farm implements to local Galardonian farmers. The confrontation intimidated the farmers that Mariner had been assisting, and roused a spider cow from its sleep, which attacked Boimler, though it posed no immediate danger to Boimler's life, due to it being an herbivore . The spider cow ended up coating Boimler with an oral slime , which held a key to neutralizing a rage virus that Commander Jack Ransom had unknowingly brought aboard the ship. Dr. T'Ana synthesized a cure from this slime, which cured the entire ship, but Boimler received no credit in discovering the cure. Boimler also did not inform Freeman of any breaches in protocol from Mariner with the Galardonians. ( LD : " Second Contact ")

Boimler was later selected for a special escort mission , assigned to take Klingon General K'orin to Tulgana IV . It was a mission he took very seriously and prepared immensely for. Boimler was disheartened when Mariner was also assigned the mission and didn't seem to be taking it quite as seriously as he was. The mission was made harder for Boimler when it turned out that K'orin and Mariner shared a history, as they got intoxicated together and were very disruptive for Boimler as he piloted the shuttlecraft. Making an unscheduled stop in Little Qo'noS , K'orin stole the shuttlecraft, and stranded Boimler and Mariner in the Klingon district, forcing them to track down the shuttle. This task was daunting for Boimler, who often found himself in trouble, and bailed out by Mariner. It made him question his place in Starfleet, but his confidence was restored when he successfully thwarted a Ferengi from mugging them. While his confidence was restored, the Ferengi was actually a friend of Mariner, and was acting by Mariner's wishes in a small act of subterfuge. ( LD : " Envoys ")

On Stardate 57501.4, Boimler accidentally revealed the secret of buffer time to Freeman while the Cerritos was en route to Gelrak V . This slip of the tongue resulted in Freeman assigning strict deadlines to each crewmember in their daily tasks. This quickly resulted in disorder and chaos aboard the ship, which eventually hindered the ship's functionality. Boimler was the only crew member who was unaffected by the deadlines, still being able to complete his assignments ahead of schedule and request more work. When the Gelrakians attacked the Cerritos , due to a gesture that was mistaken as an insult on Gelrak V, Boimler was able to convince Freeman that buffer time allowed the crew to finish their tasks comfortably and properly. Freeman brought back buffer time, and the crew successfully fought off the Gelrakians. Freeman thanked Boimler for helping her understand how important buffer time was by instigating a new ship-wide mandate known as the Boimler Effect . Boimler was never fully comfortable with being 'responsible' for this mandate, although he would later openly display the plaque he was given in his quarters. ( LD : " Temporal Edict ", " No Small Parts ")

During a mission in which the Cerritos offered support to the USS Merced , Boimler was incredibly flustered, and upset that Mariner was promoted to lieutenant , despite her disruptive behavior, and constant breaches of protocol. Convinced that this behavior was what convinced the senior staff to promote her, he did his best to break more rules and protocol. When the Cerritos found itself in a crisis, he deliberately spilled hot coffee on Ransom's lap, which just angered Ransom. ( LD : " Moist Vessel ")

About a month prior to Stardate 57601.3, Boimler picked up an alien parasite and began a romantic relationship with Lieutenant Barbara Brinson of the USS Vancouver . When the Cerritos offered support in the controlled implosion of a moon around Mixtus III , Boimler found himself intimidated by the fact that Ensign Jet Manhaver used to be in a relationship with Brinson and was working closely with her for the mission. Boimler attempted to one-up Manhaver in his personality and tried to stay close to Brinson while they worked, but also had to convince Mariner that Brinson was a normal human, and not an alien in disguise. Boimler eventually believed that Brinson was cheating on him with Manhaver, and thought he caught them in the act of sex but was flustered when this wasn't the case. After he and Brinson reconciled, he went with Brinson to an orbital platform where he intended to have sex with her. Mariner caught him fully naked , and he brushed aside any accusations she made that Brinson was a parasite, despite her having discovered the husk of one. Boimler was knocked unconscious when the moon's implosion began, and when he had come to, Brinson and Mariner discovered the parasite latched on his head. The parasite went on to say that it was the one who had made Boimler get romantic with Brinson, but despite the fact that Brinson said that she fell in love with Boimler, and not the parasite, she broke off their relationship, expressing an interest in further studying the parasite. ( LD : " Cupid's Errant Arrow ")

On Stardate 57663.9, Mariner and Boimler attended the Chu Chu dance held by the Zebulon Sisters . Afterwards, they found that their crewmate, Ensign Fletcher, had accidentally corrupted an isolinear core by plugging it into a device to affect his brainwaves. The core itself went on a brief rampage inside the Cerritos , before Mariner and Boimler were able to eject it into space via an airlock . The core would go on to destroy a Drookmani ship , and Mariner's exaggeration of the events would land Fletcher a promotion, and a brief transfer to the USS Titan , much to Boimler's disappointment, as the Titan was a ship he wanted to serve on. The transfer would not last, as Fletcher was demoted and fired less than a week later for dumping garbage into the ship's warp core . ( LD : " Terminal Provocations ")

On stardate 57752.6, Boimler assisted Sam Rutherford with a transporter experiment which would have made the transporter slightly faster in the beaming process. However, the experiment resulted in failure, as Boimler was materialized out of phase, making him glow brightly, and give off the loud tone of the transporter. While the accident was cosmetic in nature, and offered no threat to his life, it baffled Dr. T'Ana, who contacted Division 14 , and gave Boimler a brief leave of absence to Endicronimas V to recover from the accident at the medical spa there, known as " The Farm ". On his way there, he befriended many other officers who had been the victims of bizarre medical accidents, and they revealed to him that they had reason to believe that the Division 14 ship they were on, the Osler , was in fact the Farm itself, and that they were there not to recover, but so that Starfleet didn't have to worry about curing them. They planned a mutiny, which Boimler revealed to the specialist in charge of the ship. Angry at his betrayal, the other officers attempted to kill Boimler, but stopped when the Osler ended its long journey and arrived at the Farm. Boimler did not end up staying very long at the Farm, due to the fact that, shortly before their arrival, the phasing effect had worn off by itself. ( LD : " Much Ado About Boimler ")

On Stardate 57818.4, the Cerritos was involved in a diplomatic crisis when Captain Freeman accidentally insulted the Clicket ship Tweerk when she was negotiating for a map of the Romulan Neutral Zone . Missing a call for a red alert , Boimler and Mariner were unaware of the details surrounding the crisis, and unsure how to act with the Clickets . Boimler suggested executing evasive maneuvers , dumbfounding the entire bridge crew. Unbeknownst to Boimler and Mariner, the Cerritos was in the middle of a top-secret covert rescue mission of Imperium Magistrate Clar . While the rescue was a success, and Clar had initially intended to honor the crew of the Cerritos for his rescue at a party on K'Tuevon Prime , the secret nature of the mission left Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford in the dark about details surrounding the rescue, and when Clar asked them to testify about the rescue, they got the idea that they were actually in a trial rather than a party. Boimler sternly defended the senior staff of the Cerritos and accused Clar of holding a drumhead trial . This miscommunication ruined Clar's party. ( LD : " Veritas ")

Expressing an interest in advanced diplomacy, Boimler programmed a holodeck scenario, Boimler Seven , and by making use of the entire crew's personal logs , created a near-perfect simulation of the crew of the Cerritos , which he hoped to use as a tool to prepare for an interview with Captain Freeman. However, Mariner altered the program to let out some frustration and anger, making the program much more action-oriented, and giving it a narrative similar to a movie. While she acted as a supervillain named Vindicta in the program, Boimler still attempted to use the program to help prepare for his interview with Freeman. Ironically enough, it was through Mariner's changes to the program that he found out that Mariner was, in fact, Captain Freeman's daughter. This discovery flustered him so much that he was unable to face Freeman in the interview and ran out of the interview in fear. The secret regarding Mariner and Freeman would not remain secret for long as Boimler accidentally let the entire crew of the Cerritos know about the nature of their relationship when he confronted Mariner about it and was unknowingly hailed through his combadge . ( LD : " Crisis Point ", " No Small Parts ")

Mariner and Boimler butted heads in the time following this revelation, and while Boimler was attempting to transfer aboard the USS Sacramento , Mariner competed for the transfer, hoping that a new ship would result in her having a fresh start without the crew giving her special attention. While the two competed, the Cerritos was attacked by a heavily-modified Pakled ship . During the attack, Mariner and Boimler reconciled, and fought off multiple Pakled intruders. The ship was very nearly destroyed but was saved with the arrival of the USS Titan , who had picked up their distress signal.

Afterwards, Commander Ransom informed Captain William T. Riker that Boimler was one of the best officers aboard the Cerritos , and Riker offered Boimler a promotion and transfer to the Titan , which Boimler accepted, much to Mariner's anger. ( LD : " No Small Parts ")

USS Titan and Duplication Incident [ ]

Boimler aboard the Titan

In 2380, Boimler took a position as a flight control officer aboard the USS Titan , as well as a promotion to lieutenant junior grade. ( LD : " No Small Parts ") This promotion lasted for at least three months, at which point Boimler accidentally created a transporter duplicate while saving his away team from Pakleds and escaping a distortion field. Riker praised the now-two Boimlers for their "bravery and ingenuity," but informed them that Starfleet believed having two identical crew members was an undesirable complication for the Titan' s "complex" mission; one would have to go back to the Cerritos as an ensign. By this time, the two Boimlers had become sufficiently differentiated that only one of them volunteered and expressed surprise that the other did not. The volunteer continued to be known as Brad Boimler, while the other took up the name William Boimler . ( LD : " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ")

Back to the Cerritos [ ]

Brad Boimler, 2381

Boimler after being demoted back to the Cerritos .

Mariner, Tendi and Rutherford welcomed Boimler's return to the Cerritos . Upon his return, the ship's computer did not initially respond correctly to him as a crew member, interfering with Boimler's efforts to meet Lieutenant Tom Paris , who visited the ship on a handshake tour. ( LD : " We'll Always Have Tom Paris ")

In 2381 , Boimler fell through a time portal on Krulmuth-B and ended up in 2259 . Boimler and later Mariner were found by the USS Enterprise where Boimler was excited to meet his heroes Spock and Una Chin-Riley , the latter of whom he kept a recruitment poster of on the Cerritos . After the portal was taken by an Orion science vessel, Boimler used his future knowledge to help the Enterprise track it down, but the grain trade that was made to get it back caused issues for the colonists on Setlik III and the efforts to power the portal through synthetic horonium damaged the Enterprise . After a conversation with Commander Pelia , Boimler helped to make things right by revealing to the Orions that they will be remembered in the future as the ones to find the portal and that one of the crew, Astrea Tendi , was the great-grandmother of his and Mariner's friend D'Vana Tendi . By using a piece of deck plating from the Enterprise NX-01 that contained horonium, the Enterprise crew was able to power the portal and return Boimler and Mariner to their own time. ( SNW : " Those Old Scientists ")

Later, Boimler, Mariner, T'Lyn, and D'Vana Tendi were all promoted to the rank of Lieutenant junior grade . ( LD : " Twovix ")

During the confrontation with Nova Fleet , Boimler was briefly promoted to acting captain of the Cerritos while Captain Freeman was off of the ship rescuing Mariner. In the aftermath, Boimler appeared to have let the experience go to his head, but stated that Commander Jack Ransom was very happy with his captaining. Mariner suggested that he should consider getting captain's lessons from Captain Freeman. However, Tendi was forced to return to Orion due to the deal that she had made with her sister in order to get help from the Orions. ( LD : " Old Friends, New Planets ")

In the far future , Boimler was remembered as " the laziest, most corner-cutting officer in Starfleet history " and namesake of the Boimler Effect , a ship-wide mandate aboard the Cerritos that encouraged breaking the rules to get results. ( LD : " Temporal Edict ")

Physical condition [ ]

Boimler suffered from hay fever and acid reflux , got rashes from sand , and allegedly had sensitive corneas . It had also been observed that his skin was unhealthy from chronic dehydration . ( LD : " Second Contact ", " Much Ado About Boimler ", " Veritas ", " I, Excretus ")

In addition to the aforementioned ailments, Boimler suffered from various injuries or conditions during his Starfleet career: an alien parasite attached itself to the back of his head for about a month; a drunken Beckett Mariner cut into his thigh with a bat'leth ; he sustained injuries from various aliens in a bar on Tulgana IV ; and his body temporarily became glowing and transparent following a transporter accident . ( LD : " Cupid's Errant Arrow ", " Second Contact ", " Envoys ", " Much Ado About Boimler ")

Boimler was also very shy about communal nudity , and usually kept a booth open in the sonic showers as showering next to someone made him uncomfortable. His friends were supportive of this need and even continued to do so out of habit for the three months he was assigned to the Titan . ( LD : " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ")

Personal interests [ ]

Boimler's dream was to rise in the ranks of Starfleet and earn his own command and embraced a lifestyle of rule-following and sucking up to the senior officers to get there. ( LD : " Second Contact ")

He often idolized and referenced the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the USS Enterprise -D . ( LD : " Cupid's Errant Arrow ") He also idolized Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise , and even once dressed as him for Halloween . ( SNW : " Those Old Scientists ")

He frequently stressed over decisions that would make him more "promotable," such as his hairstyle or preparing the captain's favorite cookies . ( LD : " Much Ado About Boimler ", " Crisis Point ")

In pursuit of being a model Starfleet officer, Boimler spent a lot of time studying in the ship's library . In preparation for a mission to escort General K'orin, Boimler spent a day studying K'orin's career in preparation. He appeared to have had a good head for facts and figures but had trouble when attempting to speak alien languages . He had read about five books on Taxors , though when it came time to apply his studies, he botched the Taxor language . He had also taken some studies on the Tamarian language at the Academy, but during his attempt to converse with Kayshon , he accidentally insulted him. ( LD : " Envoys ", " wej Duj ")

Boimler was known amongst his friends to savor the dishes that were limited replicator privileges to senior officers aboard the Cerritos , such as pasta dishes like variations on macaroni and cheese with a breaded top, and would take opportunities to order such food during his shift when available. He was greatly pleased along with the other junior officers when the senior staff had an unlocked replicator added to the ship's mess hall . ( LD : " Moist Vessel ", " I, Excretus ")

Over time, Boimler became much more willing to join or go along with Mariner's harmless rule-breaking, such as sneaking off the ship to Starbase 25 while the bridge crew was preoccupied with a duplicating Doopler emissary and causing mischief with a submanifold casting stone stolen from Shaxs ' items to be collected for anomaly consolidation duty . ( LD : " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ", " The Spy Humongous ")

Boimler played the electric violin , having composed several original songs about his mother, including " Essence " and " Requiem for a Hug ". ( LD : " Temporal Edict ")

He had some knowledge of wielding a rapier and had an interest in swordplay. ( LD : " No Small Parts ", " Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus ")

Upon being assigned his own quarters , he proudly displayed his Boimler Effect plaque . ( LD : " No Small Parts ")

Boimler collected commemorative plates , displaying one of Jack Ransom in his quarters on the Titan . He also owned a complete set of Voyager plates , autographed by their respective officers. He finished getting the entire set signed when he finally received Tom Paris 's signature in 2381. ( LD : " No Small Parts ", " We'll Always Have Tom Paris ")

He preferred to drink cocktails while off duty, including, among others, a prune juice spritz . ( LD : " Mugato, Gumato ", " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ")

It was revealed in his personal logs that he dyed his hair purple , and kept his true hair color a secret from everyone. ( LD : " Grounded ")

Relationships [ ]

Friendships [ ].

Boimler considered his fellow " lower decks " crew members aboard the Cerritos to be some of his closest friends.

Beckett Mariner [ ]

Boimler and Mariner having a drink

Boimler and Mariner having a drink

Boimler would come to see Mariner as his best friend, despite their clashing personalities. Boimler would often voice disapproval for Mariner's impulsive decisions that often went against Starfleet protocol. She uses nicknames like "Boims" for him.

Before they got close, Captain Freeman assigned Boimler a secret assignment to monitor Mariner's activities, and to notify her if she broke protocol. While he initially was intent on reporting Mariner for stealing some farming equipment and giving them to some Galardonian farmers, he came to realize that despite her unorthodox methods, Mariner was a good Starfleet officer, and did not report her. Following this, Mariner appointed herself as his mentor, and promised to help him get to the rank of captain. ( LD : " Second Contact ")

They quickly grew as friends, despite many misadventures, and their frequent disagreements and tendency to butt heads. In 2380, Boimler accidentally stumbled onto the secret that Mariner was the daughter of Captain Freeman, as a result, crashing his interview with Freeman for the Advanced Diplomacy workshop, by blurting out Mariner's name. When he eventually told Mariner that he knew the secret, he inadvertently revealed the secret to the crew of the Cerritos when the conversation was overheard on his combadge. Mariner, frustrated that the secret was out, decided to compete with Boimler when he showed interest in transferring to the USS Sacramento . Boimler was angered with this, but later admitted to Mariner, when the Pakleds were attacking the Cerritos , that he was only frustrated because he knew that she would get transferred instead and that he would miss her. ( LD : " Crisis Point ", " No Small Parts ")

Ironically, Boimler would accept a promotion and a transfer to the USS Titan shortly afterward, much to Mariner's anger. Mariner called him a "backstabbing weasel" and held a small grudge that he didn't even say goodbye as he had left during their shift, though Boimler neglected to do so deliberately, as he was afraid that Mariner would talk him out of it, and he believed that Mariner would eventually get over it. Boimler's time on the Titan was brief, however, and when he was transferred back to the Cerritos , the two rekindled their friendship, and Boimler eventually apologized for his quietly leaving. ( LD : " No Small Parts ", " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ", " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ")

Boimler was particulary distressed by Mariner's short-lived resignation from Starfleet, their friends noting that "the longer [she's] not around the more [he] kind of loses his grasp on reality." ( LD : " The Stars At Night ")

Paired together, Boimler and Mariner were an exceptional team, and while Mariner could quite often get them into trouble, Boimler's knowledge of Starfleet protocol, and diplomatic skills could help get them out of trouble as well. The two were so close, that Tendi did not dismiss the assumption of them to be dating, though this idea sat wrong with Boimler. They affectionately teased one another, and Boimler considered Mariner his "number one". ( LD : " We'll Always Have Tom Paris ", " Mugato, Gumato ", " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ")

Jack Ransom [ ]

Boimler's relationship with Commander Ransom began fairly distantly, with Ransom initially frequently forgetting Boimler's name, treating him with some respect but mostly as an extremely junior officer he didn't know well. Throughout 2380 and 2381, Ransom and Boimler began interacting more frequently, and Ransom grew to respect the young man as a capable budding officer. It was Ransom's recommendation that caused Captain Riker to offer Boimler a promotion on the Titan . Ransom's respect for Boimler only grew after his return from the Titan , and would commend him when he did well. In mid-2381, Ransom directed one of the ship's provisional-officer cadets to Boimler for mentoring, citing Boimler as the most organized officer on the ship. ( LD : " wej Duj ")

William Boimler [ ]

Boimler appeared to have a disdain for his transporter duplicate in William. William successfully tricked Boimler into giving up his position on the Titan , and Boimler would sometimes express jealousy of William still remaining aboard the Titan in his place. ( LD : " Kayshon, His Eyes Open ", " An Embarrassment Of Dooplers ") However, when Boimler was told of William's apparent death in 2381 , it sent Boimler into a depression that caused him to question the meaning of life and the randomness of death. This depression nearly resulted in his own death due to dehydration. ( LD : " Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus ")

Romances [ ]

Barbara brinson [ ].

Boimler introduces Brinson

Boimler introduces Barbara Brinson to Mariner

Boimler briefly dated Lieutenant Barbara Brinson of the USS Vancouver . Before Stardate 57601.3, it had been quite some time since Boimler had " taken a lover ". Brinson later broke up with Boimler when it was discovered that she was attracted to, and dated, him, only because a googa parasite had attached itself to Boimler, and made him irresistible to her. ( LD : " Cupid's Errant Arrow ")

Memorable quotes [ ]

" I need you to tell me that your senior officers are infallible heroes! " " Well they're not, and that's okay. We all joined Starfleet to dive first into the unknown. We're explorers, of course we don't always know what's going on. Did Picard know about the Borg ? Did Kirk know about that giant Spock on Phylos ? Did Dr. Crusher know about that ghost in the lamp thing from the Scottish planet that she hooked up with that one time ? That whole thing. You clearly want us to say that the captain and her crew messed up, but we simply don't have the full story, and that's the truth! Whatever they did, I guarantee you it was all for good. You have shown no evidence that they're guilty of a crime, in fact, I find you guilty of trying to take them down with this sham of a trial! DRUMHEAD ! "

" If this was actually happening, they'd send the Enterprise . But, you know. Artistic license . "

" Sorry, you can't come with us. That move you pulled in the mess hall proves you don't belong in the Redshirts. " " Hey, my friend was in trouble. " " You made a fool of yourself to make a bug laugh. It was shameful. " " Alright, you know what's shameful? Trying to build a persona by copying other captains. You think Riker did that? You guys are wasting your time on this Redshirt stuff. Be your own captains! " " Cute speech. I'm sure it'll play great on the lower decks. "

" I- I didn't program any of this. I was in the holodeck trying to find meaning in the randomness of death, but I just… made a fool of myself. " " Brad, I've lost many friends. Some heroically, some tragically. The randomness of death is merely a reflection of the unexpected joys we find in life. " " So, if I spend my life worrying about a meaningless death, I'll never find joy? " " I literally just said that. " " Sorry. Thanks, Captain Sulu. I think I can live with that. " " Happy to help a fellow Starfleet officer looking for answers. "

Boimler was voiced by Jack Quaid .

In developing the characters for Lower Decks , Mike McMahan described all four leads in an 10 August 2020 TrekMovie.com interview as a combination of other Star Trek characters, parts of himself, and people in his life. Boimler was partially based on Sam Lavelle from TNG : " Lower Decks ", " a great Starfleet officer, but he's just so dedicated to trying to rank up and he's so careful about everything that he doesn't get to be Kirk. He was named after co-producer Brad Winters . ( Star Trek: Lower Decks DVD, "Aliens Among Us" )

"Bradward" is not a known long form of "Brad," and appears to be a portmanteau of "Brad" and "Edward."

'Star Trek: Lower Decks' Cast & Character Guide: Meet the Crew of the USS Cerritos

Here's our cast and character guide to the hit Paramount+ show.

It's time to boldly go where no Star Trek show has gone before! Star Trek: Lower Decks made Star Trek history when it debuted on August 6, 2020. It was not only the first animated Star Trek series since the short-lived 1970s show Star Trek: The Animated Series , it was the first ever comedic installment in the expansive Star Trek universe. Star Trek is known for exploring strange new worlds and new civilizations, but exploring comedy was brand new territory for the groundbreaking franchise. Fortunately, Lower Decks was a hit for its streaming service Paramount+, which at the time went by the name CBS All Access. Created by Mike McMahan , a self-proclaimed Trekkie, Lower Decks is a hilarious love letter to all things Star Trek with plentiful Easter eggs that pay loving homage to every iteration of Star Trek , both on the small and big screen.

Star Trek: Lower Decks follows the low-ranking support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos. The story revolves primarily around Starfleet crew members such as Beckett Mariner, Brad Boimler, D'Vanna Tendi, and Sam Rutherford as they perform menial tasks on the Cerritos. While classic Star Trek ships like the flagship U.S.S. Enterprise went on important missions like defending Earth from the Borg, the Cerritos is one of Starfleet's least important ships. Another departure from the traditional Star Trek structure is that Lower Decks focuses on the "lower deckers" of the Cerritos, while the senior officers such as the Captain are essentially supporting characters. This creates thematic opportunities for Lower Decks to explore new stories and characters often not explored in a conventional Star Trek show, usually to hilarious results.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is streaming episodes on Paramount+ . The first episode of the third season debuts on Thursday, August 25, 2022. Similar to the first two seasons, Season 3 will consist of ten episodes. Before the third season drops, let's take a look at the cast and their corresponding characters who will be warping through the cosmos once more on the USS Cerritos.

Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner

Tawny Newsome voices Ensign Beckett Mariner, one of the "Lower Deckers" of the U.S.S. Cerritos. Mariner is brash, impulsive, and always looking for trouble. Mariner's recklessness often brings her into conflict with Ensign Boimler, who is very much the polar opposite. As the show progresses, more of Mariner's backstory is revealed, including her connection to one of the senior officers of the Cerritos. Mariner also experiences quite the character growth as she becomes less impetuous throughout the show. There's a lot hidden underneath Mariner's seemingly distant demeanor, as revelations bring about emotional realizations that bring her even closer to Boimler and her fellow crew members.

Lower Decks isn't Newsome's first foray into space travel. She played Captain Angela Ali on the satirical comedy Space Force , which lasted for two seasons on Netflix and featured Steve Carell and John Malkovich in the lead roles.

Jack Quaid as Brad Boimler

Ensign Brad Boimler couldn't be more different from fellow crew member and friend Beckett Mariner if he tried. Voiced by Jack Quaid , Boimler is the neurotic perfectionist counterpart to Mariner's spontaneous adventurer. While Boimler has lofty ambitions of climbing the ranks of Starfleet, Mariner is perfectly content surveying the lower decks. In the same way that Mariner pushes Boimler outside his comfort zone, Boimler forces Mariner to come to terms with the aspects of her past she'd rather keep hidden. As the series speeds along, Boimler gradually becomes more comfortable in his own skin, more willing to take risks, and not as uptight on upholding Starfleet regulations as he was when the series began.

Jack Quaid is quite popular among the nerd community, known for playing vigilante Hughie Campbell on The Boys . Quaid also voiced Alberto Falcone in the animated film Batman: The Long Halloween and got his big break playing Marvel in The Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire .

Noël Wells as D'Vanna Tendi

Noël Wells voices D'Vanna Tendi. Tendi is an Orion ensign that serves in Sick Bay on the Cerritos. For those unaware, an Orion is an emerald green alien made famous when Captain James T. Kirk fraternized with one during a popular episode of Star Trek: The Original Series . Tendi is one of the biggest fans of Starfleet there is, giving some hardcore Trekkies a run for their money. Tendi is also incredibly excited to be serving onboard a Starfleet vessel. Her tenaciousness and excitement bleed over even during the most dangerous of situations, from scary away missions or when the Cerritos is under attack. When the show begins, Tendi is new to the crew of the Cerritos and was created to help introduce audiences to the characters. Tendi goes through quite the transformative journey in Lower Decks , as she comes across lethal enemies and terrifying situations that test her naive excitement to be serving on a Starfleet vessel in the far reaches of outer space.

Noël Wells got her start on Saturday Night Live in 2013, debuting in the show's 39th season.

Eugene Cordero as Sam Rutherford

Sam Rutherford is voiced by Eugene Cordero . Rutherford is a human/cyborg hybrid serving onboard the Cerritos. Rutherford begins the show still trying to figure out what field he is most interested in pursuing, whether that's command, engineering, or medical. Rutherford eventually settles on engineering, realizing he has a knack for problem-solving. McMahan, the show's creator, has compared Rutherford to Geordi La Forge ( LeVar Burton ), who is the chief engineering officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation . The only difference is that Rutherford isn't as adept at problem-solving as La Forge, given he's still young and figuring things out on his own. Cordero has made appearances on numerous fan-favorite shows including Arrested Development , Curb Your Enthusiasm , and The Office .

Dawnn Lewis as Carol Freeman

Dawnn Lewis voices Carol Freeman, the captain of the U.S.S. Cerritos. McMahan has described Freeman as a "very capable captain" whose starship is just not very important. Freeman also has direct ties to Mariner given that Freeman is her mother. Much of the interpersonal conflict between Freeman and Mariner on the show involves Freeman wanting Mariner assigned to another starship. Neither Freeman nor Mariner want the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos to know of their biological connection, so when the crew does find out, it causes both Freeman and Mariner quite a bit of heartache. As the show progresses, Freeman and Mariner are able to confront their complicated past in an effort to work better together as captain and crew member. Lewis has lent her voice talents to such projects as Inside Out , Toy Story of Terror! , and Monsters University .

Jerry O'Connell as Jack Ransom

Jack Ransom is voiced by Jerry O'Connell . Ransom is the first officer of the U.S.S. Cerritos and Freeman's right-hand man. When comparing Ransom to previous Star Trek first officers, McMahan has compared Ransom to William Riker, the first officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation . McMahan specified that Ransom was similar to Riker but with the addendum "if he was on speed and had less shame." That summarizes Ransom pretty well. The burly, muscular, brazen Starfleet officer who famously works out and shamelessly isn't afraid to mention it every other episode. During Season 2, Ransom was possessed by the same alien energy that took over Gary Mitchell, James T. Kirk's best friend and first enemy on The Original Series . O'Connell has a deep connection with Star Trek , given that he's married to Rebecca Romijn , who plays Number One on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . His previous credits include Billions , Stand By Me , and a whole lot of DC animated projects .

Fred Tatasciore as Shaxs

Fred Tatasciore voices Shaxs, a Bajoran tactical officer and chief security officer aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. In the first season finale, Shaxs most notably sacrifices himself saving Rutherford from the Pakleds. It was an emotional death given that Shaxs took Rutherford under his wing during the first season. Shaxs started the show as a gruff and emotionless security chief, but through the course of the first season, and as a result of his tutelage with Rutherford, opened up significantly. Of course, as in tradition with Star Trek deaths, Shaxs was resurrected and returned for Season 2. It was a hilarious commentary on how beloved Trek characters often return from the dead, such as Spock -- who dies in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , only to return in the next installment. Tatasciore has voiced many notable characters on popular animated shows such as Lard-Nar on Invader Zim , Nikos on Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law , and Qui-Gon Jinn on Star Wars: The Clone Wars .

Gillian Vigman as T'Ana

T'Ana is voiced by Gillian Vigman . T'Ana is the chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Cerritos and a member of the Caitian species. The inclusion of T'Ana was a homage to Star Trek: The Animated Series , which also featured a Caitian by the name of M'Ress. T'Ana is the first Caitian to appear on a Star Trek show since The Animated Series . McMahan has described T'Ana as a "good doctor, but unpleasant cat" and that is undoubtedly the best way to define T'Ana. T'Ana might not be the most affectionate doctor, but she revealed a softer side when she mentored Tendi last season. Tendi briefly served in Sickbay and while she realized being a medical officer comes with a fair amount of challenges, T'Ana made sure she was looked after. T'Ana is emblematic of Lower Decks in general -- often hilarious, sometimes surprising, but always heartfelt.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 7 Review: Much Ado About Boimler

Star Trek: Lower Decks episode 7 finally answers the biggest question we’ve had about one of the characters — and it’s not the person in the title of the episode.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 7

This Star Trek: Lower Decks review contains spoilers.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Episode 7

Unlike the most recent Star Trek shows, one of the appealing things about Star Trek: Lower Decks is that nearly all of its episodes are self-contained. There hasn’t been a season-long mystery to solve, and for the most part, you can watch the episodes totally out of order. That said, there is one nagging mystery that was quietly mentioned in the very first episode, that finally, appears to have been solved.

Basically, is Ensign Mariner good at her job on accident or occasionally bad at her job on purpose? In this Lower Decks we find the real answer.

While the vast majority of this episode deals with Boimler being “out of phase” and sent to a Federation recovery colony euphemistically called “the Farm,” it’s arguably the B-story that is slightly more interesting.

Ad – content continues below

Boimler’s adventures with the fellow “freaks” who have been exiled by Starfleet is both entertaining and smart, but there isn’t a whole lot of character development there. The bulk of the episode serves as a good reminder that in Trek’s past, the franchise has not done a great job dealing with stories about disability or the consequences of dangerous space accidents. Here, a lot of those less-than-great storylines are put in a new light, with a smart Star Trek -y spin. Yes, in the future, we do take care of everyone, regardless of their “ability,” thank you very much.

But beyond that commentary, and beyond everything that commentary means for the franchise, the more down-to-starship plotline in this episode is the more rewarding one. While Boimler is shipped-off to “the Farm,” Mariner is faced with having to put up with a temporary Captain, who challenges her with a simple question: Why is Mariner still an ensign!?

Back in the first episode , “Second Contact,” Boimler balks at the idea that Mariner has “seen stuff” and says “aren’t we like the same age?” In episode 5, Mariner’s flashback muddies the waters a little bit more, implying she’s maybe been an ensign for much longer than we actually think.

Now, it’s not like “Much Ado About Boimler” directly answers all of these timeline questions, but it does answer a thematic question that is connected. The substitute Captain in this episode is Captain Ramsey, who, as it turns out, is someone Mariner was friends with at the academy.

Regardless of how old Ramsey and Mariner are, respectively (doesn’t matter) this small detail proves one thing: A person who has been promoted to Captain has been in Starfleet for the exact same time as Mariner. This means Mariner has been in Starfleet long enough to have been promoted many times but has figured out how to stay permanently demoted. We kind of already knew this, but this episode drives it home. One of Mariner’s classmates from the academy is a Captain. Why isn’t Mariner further along in her career?

The answer is simple and somewhat heartfelt: Mariner has sabotaged her own career because she simply doesn’t want the responsibility. And in this episode, she outright admits this fact to Captain Ramsey. It isn’t that she can’t be an amazing Starfleet officer, she simply doesn’t want to be. This echoes the same themes in both “Temporal Edict” and “Moist Vessel,” which were also excellent standouts for Lower Decks , specifically, the idea that Starfleet may be tolerant and egalitarian, but it still places values on “winners.”

When you consider how cozy the Trek future is, it does make you wonder why someone would want to become a badass Captain or First Officer of a starship. If you were savvy, wouldn’t all that just be a bigger pain in the ass? Isn’t it more likely you’d die if you had those jobs? In the TNG episode “Tapestry,” Picard bemoans an alternate future where he’s a lowly officer, calling this other self a “dreary man in a tedious job.” But what Mariner’s arc in

is saying is that maybe Picard is a little bit wrong. After all, there’s a big difference between being good at your job and being a careerist who forgets how to enjoy life. Mariner might not be the best example of a Starfleet officer, but she might be the best example of what most of us would be like if we were really in Starfleet.

The Improvised Lower Decks Moment That Spawned A Brand-New Star Trek Character

Tendi, Rutherford, Boimler and Mariner in Star Trek: Lower Decks.

These are the voyages of the USS Cerritos. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" follows the madcap antics of one of the most average ships in Starfleet. More specifically, it's the adventures of the lowly crewmates who man the lower decks — the support crew who never even get near the spotlight. Enter Ensign Boimler, the career-driven suck-up, Ensign mariner, the lone wolf badass who hates that she's the captain's daughter, Ensign Tandy, the ultra-nerd with a heart of gold, and Ensign Rutherford, the softly spoken cyborg.

As a long-time "Star Trek" fan, I wasn't expecting to get quite so attached to a bunch of redshirts, but "Lower Decks" keeps you caring as they blunder their way from episode to episode. Even then, there's one crewmate nobody was expecting to have such a big impact: Ensign Jennifer Sh'reyan

Sh'reyan originally appeared in the series as a mere background character, manning the decks of the USS Cerritos and hanging out in the mess. But one throwaway line improvised by Ensign Mariner actress Tawny Newton changed everything.

"Get out of my Way! Move Jennifer!"

The "Lower Decks" Season 1 episode "Cupid's Errant Arrow" is where it all began.

After Ensign Boimler welcomes his new girlfriend Barbara to the lower decks, Mariner is instantly suspicious. She's hot, she's smart, she's even a lieutenant. "I've got to hand it to you, Barb is great," admits Mariner. "A little too great."

That's right — Mariner thinks Barb might be a secret alien, a Romulan spy, or a salt succubus, or an android, or a changeling... And she's determined to prove it. Secret scans, attempts to disrupt her positronic brain, and analysis of hair samples show nothing. And that's when she finds part of an exoskeletal husk.

Certain that Barb is some kind of alien parasite (or being controlled by one) she races after her pal Boimler. And that's when the moment happens. Tearing through the corridors of the ship, she's determined to save her friend ... and shoves one unsuspecting crewmate out of her way, yelling "Get out of my way! Move, Jennifer!"

That moment, and the quote "Move, Jennifer!" became an instant meme. GIFs of Ensign Mariner shoving poor Jennifer out of the way flooded fan forums. And in that moment, the new character Jennifer Sh'reyan was born.

But it turns out, the line wasn't even in the script.

"I've been places – I just pick stuff up along the way."

One of the coolest things about "Lower Decks" is its pithy quips that subvert "Star Trek" expectations, often toying with established canon along the way. During an interview with Syfy , "Lower Decks" creator Mike McMahan revealed that a lot of the dialogue is actually improvised... and that's how Jennifer was created:

"Mariner has to run to try to get to save Boimler and Tawny [Newsome] just threw in. I was like, 'Just give me effort and just... you're running, you're running. Just say whatever comes to mind while you're doing this.' Because we improv a lot of stuff too. And she was like, 'Got to save Boimler. Move, Jennifer!' And that just made me laugh so hard. And I was like, 'Mark that. That's going into the show.'"

I love this moment. For one thing, it's the kind of off-the-cuff scene that really helps establish a character's personality. Mariner's confrontational attitude is front-and-center as she shoves Jennifer — even though she's already easily racing past her.

But there's a bit more to why Jennifer became a fully fleshed character.

"And then on top of that, the artist chose, whoever was boarding that episode, put in the Andorian design because they knew that I liked it there," said McMahan. "And that's how the whole Jennifer arc started. You find these serendipitous things and they just feel better than if you had made it happen on purpose sometimes."

Why is Jennifer Sh'reyan so important? It took us two seasons to find out.

"I really hate that Andorian."

Ensign Jennifer Sh'reyan first appeared (then unnamed) in "Lower Decks" during episode 2 of the first season. After Boimler proves himself during an away mission with Mariner, he proceeds to brag about it to anyone who will listen while quaffing drinks in the mess hall. Enjoying a laugh at Mariner's expense, there's Jen — sat right next to Boimler lapping up his story about how he was right... and more importantly, how Mariner was wrong.

"I loved her because she was wearing her hair the way my wife wears her hair sometimes," explained McMahan.

This small moment would lay the foundation for Jennifer and Mariner's relationship aboard the USS Cerritos. She's regularly seen engaging with eye-rolling annoyance to Mariner, who at various points singles Jennifer out during aggressive rants. They regularly butt heads and even angrily compare fitness routines on the holodeck. As one memorable scene plays out:

Jennifer: "So, you work out by staging Cardassian prison breaks? Mariner: "Yeah. What do you do?" Jennifer: "Err... Yoga?" Mariner: "Wow, how unique!" Jennifer: "Whatever. Captain wants you in her ready room." [exits] Mariner: "I know we're not supposed to have interpersonal conflict, but I really hate that Andorian."

Their strained professional relationship is hilarious, but it soon makes way for something else entirely. Why is Jennifer so important? It all comes down to the season 2 finale.

"Thanks for doing a super dangerous space walk to save my life."

A full-blown emergency aboard the USS Cerritos brings Mariner and Jennifer's previously aggressive relationship to a head ... and it turns out they have a lot more feelings for each other than they first thought.

The USS Cerritos is assigned to aid the USS Archimedes in a first contact mission — the crew's first-ever first contact. But disaster strikes. The USS Archimedes is pulled into a gravity well, and it's up to the crew of the Cerritos to save the day. It all culminates in a dramatic space flight — the Cerritos having been stripped down and the crew forced into space suits to even get near the Archimedes. Navigating headfirst through a field of space debris, the USS Cerritos is hit head-on by a massive asteroid, which knocks a crewmate out into the void of space.

None other than Ensign Mariner.

Tumbling head-over-heels into the void, it looks as though Mariner is done for, until Jennifer dramatically saves her life, scrambling out across the hull of the Cerritos to grab hold of Mariner for dear life. The one person she hated is the one person who's there when she needs it the most... and there's a good reason why.

"When I like people, I go out of my way to force some distance."

It all comes out in the final scenes of the "Lower Decks" Season 2 finale — Mariner and Jennifer like each other. But even after admitting her feelings, Mariner still gets too embarrassed to really put herself out there:

Jennifer: "What I'm taking away from that... is that you like me?" Mariner: "No. Shut up, come on."

Taking Jennifer by the hand, she drags her over to Boimler, Tendi, and Rutherford, introducing the long-hated Jennifer Sh'reyan to her friends. Of course, all the hints were there. Throughout season 2, Mariner's distaste for the Andorian developed into romantic feelings. And a possible relationship was always an option.

"It was always a baseline in my head that Mariner could date a guy, Mariner could date a girl, Mariner could date an alien," McMahan told StarTrek.com . "It just felt right for that to be the tone of Mariner."

That never transpired in the first season. After all, Mariner was far more focused on her sense of duty and her complicated relationship with Starfleet. But as Mariner opened up in season 2, the time felt right:

"Nothing felt more appropriate for Mariner than taking the person that she ostensibly dislikes the most on the Cerritos and finding out that, of course, she's attracted to her because anything Mariner likes, she pushes away."

Where this goes in season 3 remains to be seen, but I get the feeling we can expect the relationship between Mariner and Jennifer to develop even further. And it's about time Mariner found someone she can truly trust.

‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Boss Explains Why “All Star Trek Is Good”

Canceled TV Shows 2024: Which Of Your Fave Shows Got The Axe?

'star trek: strange new worlds' renewed for season 4 at paramount+, r.i.p. kenneth mitchell: 'star trek: discovery' and 'captain marvel' star dead at 49, new shows & movies to watch this weekend: netflix's 'love at first sight' + more.

On this week’s episode of Paramount+’s  Star Trek: Lower Decks , titled “Kayshon, His Eyes Open,” Ensign Boimler (Jack Quaid) is stuck in a very bad situation. Trapped by some bad guys attacking his action-obsessed crew-mates from the Titan , his team decides to go out in the biggest, fieriest fashion possible. That’s when Boimler finally stops pretending he loves being in an action movie, and admits what he likes is the slower pace of ships like his former assignment, the  Cerritos .

“I’m sorry, I’ve gotta be honest, I didn’t join Starfleet to get in phaser fights,” Boimler says. “I signed up to explore, to be out in space making new discoveries, and peaceful, diplomatic solutions. That’s boldly going. And you know what? I’d love to be in a string quartet. I loved that when Riker was on the  Enterprise he was out there jamming on the trombone, and catching love disease, and acting in plays, and meeting his identical transporter clone Thomas. That stuff may not seem as cool as what you guys do, but it’s Starfleet. All the way.”

It’s hard not to read this as not just a commentary on the expectations for what  Star Trek has become — meaning big budget action spectaculars — but also a mission statement for  Lower Decks , as well, as show that is purposefully built on showing the dichotomy between the intensity of the bridge crew’s situations, and the monotony of the lower decks.

But as showrunner Mike McMahan told Decider, it goes beyond that, even.

“This is a show that’s saying: we love Star Trek and if there is a Star Trek you aren’t into, tough beans, we love that Star Trek ,” McMahan said. “There’s no bad series, there’s no bad movie, because at the end of the day it’s Star Trek . Specifically, I think the series is a mix of and a celebration of the goofier parts of Star Trek and the serious parts of Star Trek .”

For Boimler’s big speech, McMahan noted that it’s “really cool” because, “it takes being in the cool part of Star Trek, or the cinematic Star Trek: Nemesis sort of Star Trek to be like, wait, maybe I like the string quartets. Maybe Starfleet for me, personally, I don’t want to be in the movies, I don’t want to be jetting around the planet in the ATV. I want to be doing the week to week thing where it’s like, Leslie’s nanobots are getting around, I guess we all have to have chocolate sundaes. That’s my kind of Star Trek . And it makes me love Boimler even more that he got the kind of Star Trek he thought he wanted and then has grown enough to be like, well, wait, maybe all Star Trek is good and you just have to find the one that’s for you.”

Given Boimler’s effective argument, chances are at least some viewers might agree that  Lower Decks is, indeed, the  Star Trek for them.

New episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks stream Thursdays on Paramount+.

Chosen One of the Day: Ensign Boimler from Star Trek: Lower Decks

Boimler Star Trek Lower Decks hero

Credit: CBS

When Star Trek: Lower Decks  kicked off, no one was quite sure what to expect. An adult-oriented animated show about our favorite problematic space organization? But turns out, what we got was an absurdly funny, found family sitcom with a solid heart.

Obviously, we all want to be the flawed but strong Ensign Mariner (Tawny Newsome). Much like our rash, beloved Starfleet captains and officers past, she’s aspirational. But if we’re all being very honest with ourselves — I mean, really honest — most of us are Brad Boimler (voiced by Jack Quaid). I don’t mean we all are obsessed with rank or rules, but who among us cannot relate to Boimler’s level of constant anxiety?

Brad Boimler is not a cool man. And that’s OK! Great, even! He’s one of us!

And he’s so consistent in how hard he tries. Whether he’s covered in hot bananas while meeting a new colleague, dictating his own very nerdy logs, or being suckled on by a giant alien milk-laden spider, Boimler tries . Or he acts like a cocky asshole and ruins everything, but again, people in glass houses (people meaning us, because we’re all also assholes, let’s be real).

Honestly, I do very much love Bradward Boimler, but I mostly wanted Boimler to be today’s chosen one because of this face:

Boimler Star Trek Lower Decks3

This is the face of a man who knows he’s gone too far. He’s spilled the beans on a secret he shouldn’t have known and he had all the confidence in the world while doing it, and it immediately blew up in his face. I mean, immediately .

This is the visage of a broken brain. This is the visage of 2020. This is the visage of my heart.

Brad Boimler knows my heart.

"Hold onto your saddles" —

Check out live-action boimler and mariner in strange new worlds s2 trailer, "our job puts us up against death. we might not like it, but we do have to face it.".

Jennifer Ouellette - May 24, 2023 5:55 pm UTC

We already knew that the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would feature a crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Paramount just dropped the full trailer for S2, giving us our first glimpse of Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid playing the live-action counterparts to their animated Lower Decks characters Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler. They definitely nailed their respective looks. And yes, part of the crossover episode will be animated in a similar style just to keep things fun.

(Some spoilers below, notably for S1.)

As reported previously , the series features classic The Original Series characters Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Spock (Ethan Peck). Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr. M'Benga; Celia Rose Gooding plays Cadet Nyota Uhura; Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel; Melissa Navia plays Lt. Erica Ortegas; and Christina Chong plays La'An Noonien-Singh (a relation of the classic revenge-obsessed Star Trek villain Khan).

Alas, we bid farewell in the penultimate S1 episode to Chief Engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak), an Aenar, aka an albino subspecies of Andorians that are generally depicted as blind. When an infection of Gorn eggs hit the ship, Hemmer helped fight the spread, only to become infected. When he sacrificed himself, perishing along with the Gorn eggs he carried inside, there wasn't a dry eye in millions of homes around the world. And the S1 finale gave us a bona fide cliffhanger when Number One was arrested for being a genetically modified Illyrian. So the Enterprise is getting a new chief engineer for S2: Pelia, played by the legendary Carol Kane.

Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid totally look like their animated counterparts Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler.

There was a short teaser for S2 last month, but it didn't tell us much about any plot details. Mostly the teaser emphasized the diversity and camaraderie of the crew as they embark on new adventures and face fresh challenges, both personal and professional. This full trailer gives us more of the same. Even the brief official synopsis is maddeningly vague: "Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Spock (Ethan Peck) and the rest of the Enterprise crew are back exploring strange new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before." That's probably due to this show's (welcome) episodic nature, a return to classic Star Trek standalone stories each week.

The trailer opens with Ortegas attempting a daring shuttle descent to a planet's surface as Captain Pike looks a bit queasy. "Don't worry, I did this a hundred times during the war. It's like riding a bike," she assures him—and she pulls it off because this is Ortegas we're talking about. There are aliens and explosions and at least one shot of each main cast member in action, plus the occasional bit of poignant philosophizing. "Our job puts us up against death," Kirk tells Singh. "We might not like it but we do have to face it."

And yes, that is Spock locking lips with Nurse Chapel in a passionate embrace, finally giving in to the sparks that flew between them in S1. It looks like Spock may also bond a little with Boimler, giving the latter his best Vulcan "live-long-and-prosper" salute as Boimler is about to be transported. Boimler naturally fumbles his response.

When Star Trek: Discovery Ends, I'll Miss Tig Notaro's Jett Reno The Most

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 7 - "Erigah"

  • Jett Reno shines with sarcasm and humor in Star Trek: Discovery, making her a standout character despite limited screen time.
  • Reno's colorful past includes smuggling and survival, adding layers to her character and making her even more intriguing.
  • With the possibility of appearing in future Trek projects, Reno's memorable presence may continue to delight fans.

Since her first appearance on Star Trek: Discovery , Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) has been one of the show's best characters. Despite only appearing in seventeen of Discovery's sixty-two episodes so far, Reno never fails to make her presence known with her biting sarcasm and often hilarious observations. Discovery's main characters like Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Ambassador Saru (Doug Jones) have joined the ranks of Star Trek's greatest, and will surely be missed when the series is over. Jett Reno received far less screen time, making the potential end of her Star Trek career even more unfortunate.

Introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premiere, Reno joined the crew of the USS Discovery after she was rescued from the wreck of the medical frigate, the USS Hiawatha. Since then, Reno has served in engineering, helping Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) keep the Crossfield Class starship up and running. Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 7 , "Erigah" revealed more about Reno's past, which apparently includes working as a bartender, a shuttle pilot, and a smuggler, among others. While Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) work to decipher the final Progenitors' clue, they seek information from Reno. Always busy working on the ship, Reno walks and talks, revealing pieces of her fascinating history.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Star Trek is ending series like Discovery and Lower Decks but renewed Strange New Worlds while setting up new streaming and theatrical movies.

Commander Jett Reno Is A Discovery Character Unlike Any Other

"i can fix stuff with duct tape, if you want.".

Commander Jett Reno served as an engineer on the USS Hiawatha during Star Trek: Discovery 's Federation-Klingon War , and when her ship crashed, Reno volunteered to stay behind to care for injured crew members. Stranded on an interstellar asteroid, Reno kept her fellow Hiawatha crew members alive for over ten months before the USS Discovery found them. Soon after she was rescued, Reno joined Discovery during its investigation of the Red Angel, and she remained on the ship for its journey to the 32nd century. Although Reno initially butted heads with Stamets, the two eventually formed a somewhat dysfunctional friendship.

Comedian and actor Tig Notaro has imbued Reno with so much personality, that she makes a big impression with a small amount of screen time.

Despite the trauma Reno has experienced, including losing her Soyousian wife during the Klingon War, she remains a breath of fresh air among the crew. Her no-nonsense attitude and ability to take every situation in stride make Jett an invaluable addition to the USS Discovery, and she's helped save the ship on multiple occasions. In some ways, Reno's sense of humor feels like a callback to Star Trek: The Original Series and Dr. Leonard McCoy's (DeForest Kelley) lovable irascibility. Although Reno only pops up a few episodes per Star Trek: Discovery season, her commentary and interactions with the other characters are often the highlight of the episode.

Jett Reno Has A Fascinating (& Colorful) Star Trek History

"you havent lived until youve tried my seven of limes.".

As revealed in Star Trek: Discovery's "Erigah," Commander Reno worked several different jobs before joining Starfleet. As Tilly and Adira search for answers about the last of the Progenitors' five clues , they learn Reno used to work with rare manuscripts. When they ask Jett about it, she replies that she "may have padded [her] résumé with that one." In reality, Reno smuggled old manuscripts. At Tilly's surprise, Reno lists off numerous "odd jobs" she had before Starfleet, including: "VIP shuttle pilot, deep mercury welder, [and] bartender at a cozy little dive on Ashalon Four."

This history fits Jett Reno perfectly, and she has added even more fantastical experiences to her life's story since joining the USS Discovery. Not only has she survived a starship crash and been stranded for nearly a year, but she has also traveled 930 years into the future. In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Reno was abducted by Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) when she caught him sabotaging Discovery. Reno helped convince Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) that he had chosen the wrong side, and escaped Tarka's force field prison using black licorice and a spare communicator chip.

Star Treks Paramount Plus Movies Must Keep Canceled TV Shows Alive

Star Trek on Paramount+'s potential series of made-for-streaming movies can keep canceled shows like Picard, Discovery, and Lower Decks alive.

Could Jett Reno Return In a Future Trek Project?

"if i had some hot and sour soup... wouldn't help us, i'm just hungry.".

With the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery spin-off, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, the possibility remains open for Commander Reno or any other Discovery character to appear in the new series. While Reno doesn't seem a likely candidate for teaching Starfleet cadets, she would make a hilariously perfect guest lecturer. Considering this is Star Trek, there is also the possibility that time travel or some other science fiction solution could send Reno to one of the other ongoing Trek series. (If Ensigns Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) can cross over from Star Trek: Lower Decks to the live-action Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , then anything is possible.)

Whether or not Jett Reno appears in any future Star Trek projects, she remains one of Star Trek: Discovery's most memorable characters.

In Star Trek: Discovery 's "Erigah," Commander Reno mentions that she "used to move hard-to-find folios for a shady antiquarian archivist." Could this archivist be someone who has already appeared in another Star Trek project? On Strange New Worlds, the Lanthanite Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, Commander Pelia (Carol Kane), once ran an antique and curio shop on Earth. Before Discovery's trip to the 32nd century, Reno could have known Pelia in the 23rd century, and the two would likely make great scene partners. Whether or not Jett Reno appears in any future Star Trek projects, she remains one of Star Trek: Discovery's most memorable characters.

Last-Minute Reinforcements Are a Starfleet Tradition

As seen in Discovery's confrontation with the Breen, Starfleet's penchant for arriving with support in the nick of time has endured into the 32nd Century.

Collage of Star Trek episodic stills that showed when Starfleet reinforcements arrived

StarTrek.com

When four Federation vessels arrived to back up the U.S.S. Discovery -A during a confrontation with a Breen dreadnought in Star Trek: Discovery ’s " Erigah ," the impromptu armada proved that Starfleet's penchant for last-minute reinforcements has endured into the 32nd Century.

Let’s look back on some of Star Trek 's most exhilarating starship entrances from across the franchise's celebrated history.

10. "Beam Them Aboard, Chief!"

Garak and Odo pilot the runabout as they are pursued by the Jem'Hadar in 'The Die is Cast'

"The Die is Cast"

Held captive on a Romulan warbird in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's " The Die is Cast ," Garak and Odo can only stand by as a joint Tal Shiar and Obsidian Order fleet is ambushed by scores of Jem'Hadar fighters near the Founders' homeworld. The two successfully retreat to their runabout, but Jem'Hadar ships follow and quickly knock out the small Starfleet vessel's shields and warp drive.

Garak and Odo resign themselves to their fates… at least until the U.S.S. Defiant swoops past their forward viewports and dispatches the nearest Jem'Hadar pursuers. Although the combined Romulan-Cardassian fleet is lost, the Defiant beams Garak and Odo out of danger and escapes back to the Alpha Quadrant.

9. "A Pakled Party, and I Wasn't Invited?"

A tattered Boimler points out the Cerritos viewscreen at the U.S.S. Titan as they're attacked by the Pakleds in 'No Small Parts'

"No Small Parts"

In the classic Star Trek: Lower Decks episode " No Small Parts ," the Pakleds surround the U.S.S. Cerritos — which the Pakleds erroneously refer to as the Enterprise — and begin to pull the Federation vessel apart. Ensign Beckett Mariner sits in the center seat and braces to order the crew to abandon ship, but Ensign Brad Boimler detects another starship approaching.

The U.S.S. Titan — or, according to the Pakleds, "another Enterprise " — sails in with its phasers and photon torpedoes ablaze, causing their confused foes to depart in a hasty fashion. Captain Riker's Titan even comes away from the encounter with an additional officer, as Boimler accepts a promotion and is transferred over to Riker's command.

8. "Might We Be of Assistance?"

Picard looks out the viewscreen to see the Romulans arrive to support them in Star Trek Nemesis

Star Trek Nemesis

With Praetor Shinzon intent upon deploying his Scimitar 's devastating thalaron-based weapon against Earth in Star Trek Nemesis , Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise -E put up a valiant struggle in the face of their opponent's overwhelming firepower. Two additional Romulan warbirds decloak, seemingly reducing the Starfleet vessel's odds of survival… at least until Commander Donatra announces her intention to ally with the Enterprise -E and openly oppose Shinzon.

Although the two Romulan ships are eventually incapacitated, they take a toll on the Scimitar and provide valuable humanitarian aid to Picard’s ailing crew once the Praetor’s vessel is vanquished. This newfound rapport with the Romulans ultimately plays a key part in Picard’s future dealings involving the proposed evacuation of Romulus.

7. "Who's to Say We Aren't a Federation Armada?"

James Kirk pilots a shuttle in 'A Quality of Mercy'

"A Quality of Mercy"

In " A Quality of Mercy ," the stunning first season finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Captain Christopher Pike partakes in an alternate future in which he avoids being wounded in a training accident. Opposed by the Romulan Praetor's flagship and its accompanying armada, the U.S.S. Enterprise is weeks away from any Starfleet support.

Luckily, the ever-resourceful Captain James T. Kirk utilizes a shuttle to retrieve dozens of robotic mining craft to bluff their way through the situation. Hostilities prove inevitable, but the unmanned Federation haulers divert enough incoming fire to grant the Enterprise the ability to escape. A declaration of war and severe injuries inflicted upon Spock demonstrate to Pike what could happen if he dodges his own fate.

6. "I'll See If I Can Get the Klingons' Attention."

An alt-future Picard looks out the viewscreen with an alt-future Riker standing behind him on the bridge in 'All Good Things...'

"All Good Things..."

In Star Trek: The Next Generation 's iconic series finale " All Good Things… ," Jean-Luc Picard experiences an alternate future in which he travels into Klingon space aboard Captain Beverly Picard's U.S.S. Pasteur . In search of any signs of a temporal anomaly, the Pasteur 's unsanctioned mission draws the ire of two Klingon warships that greatly outmatch the medical ship's shields.

An attempt to surrender fails, and only the equally unauthorized appearance of an upgraded U.S.S. Enterprise -D saves the day. Commanded by Admiral Riker, the Enterprise -D beams over the Pasteur 's survivors and sets course back to the Federation. Jean-Luc Picard convinces Riker to reconsider, and the Enterprise -D returns to help seal an anti-time rupture and prevent it from consuming the galaxy.

5. "Our Destiny Has Arrived."

Admiral Brett Anderson warps in with reinforcements to help Georgiou's Shenzhou as they face off against the Klingons in 'Battle at the Binary Stars'

"Battle at the Binary Stars"

Drawn to the outermost borders of Federation space by T'Kuvma in Star Trek: Discovery ’s "Battle at the Binary Stars," the U.S.S. Shenzhou faces off against a Klingon fleet that has assembled to heed the sacred call of the Beacon of Kahless. A task force overseen by Admiral Brett Anderson warps in to back up Captain Georgiou's ship, but T'Kuvma has orchestrated the entire situation as a ruse.

Initially seen as a way to even the odds, Starfleet's reinforcements actually play into T'Kuvma’s ploy to start a war between the Federation and Klingons with the goal of uniting the Great Houses behind him. Although T'Kuvma perishes in the battle's aftermath, the skirmish results in the devastating war that he wished to ignite.

4. "We're Basically a Hotel Now."

The Titan rushes in to aid the Eleos XII as it was trapped in the Shrike's tractor pull in 'Disengage'

"Disengage"

Star Trek: Picard 's " Disengage " finds Jean-Luc Picard, William Riker, Jack Crusher, and a severely wounded Beverly Crusher trapped on board the S.S. Eleos XII as Captain Vadic's malevolent Shrike bears down upon it. Ensnared by the Shrike 's tractor beam and unable to break free, the Eleos XII 's capture seems inevitable.

However, Commander Seven of Nine persuades Captain Liam Shaw to intercede, and the refit U.S.S. Titan -A races into position between the two ships. This severs the tractor beam and allows them to rescue the four passengers from certain death. The relatively small-scale triumph ends up paving the way for a far greater achievement, as the Federation ensemble tracks clues which unearth Vadic's plot to infiltrate Starfleet and the Borg Queen's own insidious plans.

3. "Captain, I’m Sorry We Were Late."

Worf appears on the Defiant viewscreen to apologize for being late with Klingon reinforcements in 'Sacrifice of Angels'

"Sacrifice of Angels"

Resolved to wrest Deep Space 9 from Dominion hands, several Federation fleets converge on a Dominion armada twice their size in Deep Space Nine 's " Sacrifice of Angels ." As the lead ship, Captain Benjamin Sisko's U.S.S. Defiant is pummeled by enemy fire and its shields are pressed to the limit.

Fortunately, Commander Worf bursts into the fray with Klingon reinforcements which dive through the Dominion formation. Bolstered by their allies, the Defiant 's crew members propel their vessel on a daring charge through the Dominion lines and become the only starship to reach Deep Space 9 before the Dominion's own reinforcements can emerge from the wormhole. With help from the Bajoran Prophets, the Defiant denies the additional Dominion forces entry into the Alpha Quadrant and retakes the pivotal space station.

2. "Fly Her Apart, Then!"

The Excelsior appears on the Enterprise viewscreen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

As Captain James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise -A are rattled by incoming fire from General Chang and his Klingon Bird-of-Prey in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country , Captain Hikaru Sulu orders his crew to push the U.S.S. Excelsior 's warp drive to the limit.

Sulu's starship arrives on scene in time to split Chang’s attention, and the Excelsior follows the Enterprise -A's lead in a coordinated strike on the cloaked enemy vessel. The Excelsior 's heroic intervention supplies Captain Kirk with enough time to expose the conspiracy to scuttle the Khitomer Conference, thus paving the way for the Khitomer Accords and a lasting peace between the Federation and Klingon Empire.

1. "It's the Enterprise !"

The Borg lays on its assault on several Starfleet vessels in Star Trek: First Contact

Star Trek: First Contact

A Federation fleet intercepts the Borg in the Typhon Sector, but the cube's powerful weapons and regenerative technology leave death and destruction in its wake. As the Collective approaches Earth, Commander Worf readies the heavily-damaged U.S.S. Defiant for ramming speed in an effort to prevent the Borg from assimilating the planet.

Worf's helm officer suddenly calls out the arrival of another starship, quickly identifying it as Captain Jean-Luc Picard's U.S.S. Enterprise -E. The flagship's appearance boosts morale, and Picard harnesses his lingering connection with the Collective to pinpoint a weak spot on the cube for the remaining Starfleet vessels to target. The Borg ship explodes, momentarily ending the most immediate threat to Earth and handing the Federation a victory in Star Trek: First Contact 's Battle of Sector 001.

Picard Playing Poker In TNG's Finale - What It Really Means

I really hope this all of us are dead character is alive in season 2, squid game season 2 release month confirmed by gi-hun star.

  • Picard and the USS Enterprise-D tried to save Chief O'Brien after TNG's finale in a bold mission against the Cardassians.
  • DS9 provided updates on Enterprise crew post-TNG finale, impacting Dominion War effort and Worf's new home.
  • USS Enterprise-D underwent upgrades between TNG finale and Star Trek Generations, leading to a crash on Veridian III.

Just a short time after the events of the Star Trek: The Next Generation season finale, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-D embarked on a mission to save Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney). The TNG finale aired on 23rd May 1994, wrapping up the TV adventures for the crew of the USS Enterprise-D until Patrick Stewart returned for Star Trek: Picard in 2020. In November, the TNG crew would relaunch the Star Trek movies as William Shatner literally handed the franchise over to Patrick Stewart in Star Trek Generations .

However, fans didn't have to wait until November to find out what happened next to the Star Trek: The Next Generation characters , as an Easter egg in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine updated viewers on the whereabouts of the USS Enterprise-D. DS9 would occasionally provide updates on the movie exploits of the Enterprise crew, with the events of Star Trek: First Contact heavily impacting the Dominion War effort, and Lt. Commander Worf (Michael Dorn) finding a new home on DS9 after the destruction of the Enterprise-D. DS9 's first such Enterprise update occurred just two weeks after the TNG finale in 1994.

TNG’s finale “All Good Things” saw Captain Picard finally join his senior staff for a hand of poker, a gesture that meant more than it might seem.

Star Trek: DS9 Revealed USS Enterprise-D Tried To Save O'Brien After TNG's Finale

In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 25, "Tribunal", Chief O'Brien is arrested by the Cardassians and put on trial for supplying weapons to the Maquis. Outraged at the Cardassians arresting a Federation citizen without prior extradition negotiations, Starfleet decided to put pressure on the Cardassian Union. Picard's Enterprise was part of a small group of starships sent to the Federation-Cardassian border to demonstrate force and pressure the government into releasing O'Brien from prison . As O'Brien was Chief Petty Officer aboard the Enterprise, Picard and the crew had a personal stake in their assignment.

Due to Miles O'Brien being a background character in early episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation , he had various ranks, including Ensign and Lieutenant. He was finally confirmed to be a Chief Petty Officer in TNG season 4, episode 2, "Family".

Unfortunately, the presence of the USS Enterprise-D, USS Prokofiev, and the USS Valdemar wasn't enough to dissuade the Cardassian Union from their plan to execute Chief O'Brien and discredit the Federation . It was therefore up to the combined efforts of a mysterious Maquis informer and the crew of Deep Space Nine to expose the Cardassians' elaborate deception. Unmasking O'Brien's former colleague Raymond Boone (John Beck) as a Cardassian impersonator, Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) brought "Boone" to the tribunal, which swiftly brought the sham trial to a close.

What Happened To USS Enterprise-D Between TNG And Star Trek Generations?

The gap between the broadcast of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 2, episode 25, "Tribunal" and the theatrical release of Star Trek Generations is reflected in the time that passes in-universe. When audiences next see the crew of the USS Enterprise-D, they're celebrating Worf's promotion to Lieutenant Commander in an elaborate holodeck hazing ritual. Beyond their attempts to pressure the Cardassian government to release Chief O'Brien, not much is known about what the Enterprise-D crew were up to between "All Good Things" and Star Trek Generations .

The Star Trek Generations version of the starship Enterprise has had several upgrades since the events of "All Good Things", suggesting a refit took place some time after the O'Brien situation. A refit would allow time for some much-needed downtime for the crew after the Star Trek: The Next Generation finale. Among the upgrades seen in Generations are additional science stations on the bridge, a chair for Worf at the tactical station, and new lighting was also fitted. It's just a shame that the upgrades to the Enterprise were so short-lived, as the ship crashed on Veridian III a few short months later.

Star Trek Generations is currently streaming on Max.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, also known as DS9, is the fourth series in the long-running Sci-Fi franchise, Star Trek. DS9 was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, and stars Avery Brooks, René Auberjonois, Terry Farrell, and Cirroc Lofton. This particular series follows a group of individuals in a space station near a planet called Bajor.
