When is 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 coming out, where can you watch 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, is there a trailer for 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3, who's in the 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 cast, who are the creators of 'star trek: strange new worlds', when did 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 film, what's the plot of 'star trek: strange new worlds' season 3 about, is 'star trek: strange new worlds' getting a season 4, more shows like 'star trek: strange new worlds' that you can watch right now.

It's a huge sigh of relief when a spinoff of a classic like the original Star Trek (which ran from 1966 to 1969) is well done, polished, and gripping. Especially when that show stands out in a franchise with twelve - yes, you read that right - twelve corresponding series. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which serves as a prequel to the original (and iconic) Star Trek series, follows Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) as he leads his crew through the galaxy aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. The show, which premiered in 2022, was met with high critical acclaim from the beginning and continues to find fans with each new season - an impressive feat in a time when so many shows get lost in the streaming shuffle. Now renewed for a third season right after its Season 2 finale, here's everything we know so far about the next chapter in the epic space adventure.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window was from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Subscriptions to Paramount+ are available in two tiers: Paramount+ Essential (with commercials, $5.99/month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (commercial-free, $11.99/month).

WATCH ON PARAMOUNT+

With production recently ending, there is still no official footage from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3. That said, we hope to get our first look at the new season sometime later this year. Stay tuned to Collider as we await more info.

Leading the charge is fan-favorite Captain Pike , played by Anson Mount. Mount is no stranger to the Star Trek world, as he also appeared in Star Trek: Discovery in 2019. His other credits include films like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Britney Spears -led 2002 drama Crossroads . Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

The series was originally set to film early in 2023 but due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the series was delayed by several months. Thankfully, they recently wrapped up filming in Canada earlier this year. Anson Mount took to Instagram to celebrate the conclusion of filming.

Mount also wrote a heartfelt message to fans after concluding production, saying:

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on season 3, at least from me, there’s still a little bit of work to be done. I feel like I could sleep for a week, but I still have many travels and many things ahead of me to do, and I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shots here. Thank you for your patience, especially during the strikes, it wasn’t anyone’s intention for us to be delayed to that extent. Thank you for sticking with us, thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans, I am one of you and it’s because of people like you that I get to live out my dreams like this and I’ll never stop thanking you for having me in your house.”

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again.

To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

There are still many more stories to be told and strange new worlds to explore. In a surprise to no one, Paramount+ has already renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a fourth season. Mount took to Instagram , saying:

"We’ll see you again in the spring when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes back into production for Season 4!"

The Mandalorian (2019-)

Disney+'s runaway hit The Mandalorian has taken the world - and the internet - by storm. Premiering in 2019, show creator and showrunner Jon Favreau ( Chef ) has confirmed that Season 4 has already been written. The series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ), as he travels through the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Oh, and let's not forget about his companion, the now-iconic Grogu AKA Baby Yoda . WATCH ON DISNEY+

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

In the spirit of revisiting classic sci-fi television, for an updated version of the original Battlestar Galactica , try 2004's refreshed version. While not entirely a remake, it offers a more modern view of the cult classic, which originally ran from 1978-1979. Starring Edward James Olmos ( Stand and Deliver ), Mary McDonnell ( Donnie Darko ), Jamie Bamber ( Law and Order: UK ), and, who can forget, Katee Sackhoff 's iconic Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the show is sure to hit that same, familiar space exploration note.

Lost In Space (2018-2021)

For another modernized take on a classic, try the remake of Lost in Space , based on the original that ran from 1965-1968. The Robinsons are a family who wanted to start over on a space colony (very relatable), but they end up on an uncharted alien planet instead and must struggle for survival. The remake stars Toby Stephens ( Die Another Day ) and Molly Parker ( The Wicker Man ) as Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and ran for three seasons on Netflix.

How Many Episodes Are In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2?

Captain Pike wearing a tribal uniform

To boldly go where no one has gone before has always been the focus of the "Star Trek" franchise, all of which  can be watched on Paramount+ . "Star Trek" and its many spin-offs have seen a wide variety of species working towards common goals in typically peaceful and compassionate means, though that isn't to say that conflict is always avoidable. Just look at Paramount's popular "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" series, which is set canonically before the events of the original '60s series. Focusing on Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" quickly endeared itself to both Trekkies and the general public for its episodic format that often features a message of hope.

Luckily, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" was quickly greenlit for a second season, which is set to premier on June 15, 2023. That means it won't be long before audiences are given a chance to once again sail the stars with the crew of the USS Enterprise, but some may wonder how many episodes are on the horizon. Unsurprisingly, Season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will contain 10 episodes, which is the exact same episode count as the first season. Considering the many events and stories were packed into Season 1, one can only imagine what Season 2 might have in store.

One of the showrunners of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds hopes to amplify what worked in the first season

The Season 1 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" certainly set the stage for Season 2, and it sees Pike come face to face with his own mortality, a burgeoning conflict between the Federation and the Romulan Empire, and of course the arrest of Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) because of her genetically engineered status. Needless to say, Season 2 will more than likely hit the ground running when it returns on June 15. In addition, Season 1 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" currently maintains a 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, which sets the bar very high in terms of expectations for Season 2.

In an interview with Trek Movie , co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers was asked whether Season 2 of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will be different from the first season. Myers answered, "I want to say more of what's worked. But I would also say, in some ways, it's different. We were trying to take what worked and really amplify that. And then try to correct where we weren't happy with it. But the biggest thing we tried to do was not hold back stuff. We were really like, 'Okay, let's pretend this is our last season. And let's absolutely go for everything that we wanted to do.'" With this comment in mind, it definitely sounds like Season 2 of "Strange New Worlds" is chock full of glorious "Star Trek" goodness that will be spread out over ten hopefully awesome episodes.

star trek strange new worlds how many episodes

Boldly go! Of all the new Star Trek projects, Strange New Worlds probably has fans the most excited, if only because it seems poised to be the one series that feels the most like “regular Star Trek.” Just a few short years ago, it would be hard to imagine yet another Star Trek prequel whipping the fandom into a lather. And yet, Strange New Worlds is poised to really, truly, take the Trek franchise back to boldly going basics. Here’s everything we know so far.

As Discovery and Picard continue to chart a course into Trek’s future, one part of the Trek franchise is keeping a nostalgic boot firmly planted in its colorful past. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the next new series in this expanding universe, and it's swimming in nostalgia even though not a single legacy actor is involved with the project. Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek continues to boldly recast legacy characters. Here’s what that looks like for Strange New Worlds .

When is the Strange New Worlds release date?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will hit Paramount+ May 5, 2022. Season 2 is already in production. It looks like each season will be 10 episodes long.

Is there a Strange New Worlds trailer?

There are several videos that are basically different kinds of Strange New Worlds trailers. The first proper video was released in 2021 and was called “Meet the Characters.” More recently, there’s been a teaser trailer that focused on Captain Pike riding a horse, and boundless outer space optimism, in a decidedly pointed pivot away from darker, grittier, Star Trek.

What is the plot of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a new ongoing TV series set in the 23rd century probably about 5 years before the classic show. It was announced on May 15, 2020, in a video message from Ethan Peck, Anson Mount, and Rebecca Romijn. The cast repeatedly suggested this project came into being because fans wanted it . The show will take place in established Star Trek continuity (Prime Timeline), but during a period that has not been extensively depicted.

Why is it called Strange New Worlds ?

The title "Strange New Worlds," is taken from Captain Kirk's opening narration from the classic Star Trek.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before!

In subsequent versions of Star Trek , this narration was changed: in TNG the "five-year mission" became "continuing mission" and "where no man" became "where no one." It's a good bet that if there's an opening narration from Captain Pike in Strange New Worlds , that he will say "five-year-mission" and "where no one has gone before." In canon, this speech is considered to be the motto of Starfleet, and in the J.J. Abrams movie Star Trek Into Darkness (which featured a different Captain Pike) it was called "the captain's oath."

Where is Strange New Worlds in the Star Trek timeline?

Strange New Worlds is a sequel to Discovery Season 2, a sequel to Star Trek: Enterprise , and a prequel to The Original Series . Presumably, the show will chronicle a five-year mission commanded by Captain Pike from roughly 2258-ish to 2263-ish. For context, this is how it shakes out.

  • 2150s-2160s Star Trek: Enterprise
  • Early 2254: Short Treks episode "Q&A"; Spock's first day on the Enterprise
  • 2254: "The Cage"; first (initially) unaired 1965 Star Trek pilot. Also, the first (filmed) appearance of Spock, Pike, and Number One
  • 2256-2258: Star Trek: Discovery Seasons 1 and 2
  • 2258-2263(?) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • 2265-2270 Star Trek: The Original Series .
  • 2270s-2290s Star Trek classic movies
  • 2360s-2401: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, TNG movies , Lower Decks, and Picard.
  • 3189-?: Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and Season 4.

Trek canon has established that Pike commanded two consecutive five-year missions on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 prior to Kirk taking command in 2265. (Though in some old canon this was 2264.) The events of "The Cage" on Talos IV happen before Discovery and Strange New Worlds , and the Short Treks episode "Q&A" happens before all of that. Pike’s temporary command of the USS Discovery in Discovery Season 2 was seemingly a blip in between back-to-back five-year missions on the Enterprise .

In theory, Strange New Worlds might have taken place between 2254 and 2257, which would then make it a prequel to Discovery and a weird midquel to "The Cage." However, Akiva Goldsman said the showrunners are not "hitting the reset button," on the characters, which confirms the series will take place after Discovery Season 2. So, 2258 or 2259 is a good bet. Goldsman also told the Hollywood Reporter in April 2021 , that various aspects of the Strange New Worlds' aesthetic will be made to look like it matches up closer to The Original Series . This means that yes, the uniforms and the design of the Enterprise have changed again, slightly .

“It's a fine line because obviously we want to keep continuity with the storytelling and the style, but we also want Strange New Worlds to be a different show. It's not Discovery . There are a few more reach-backs (to The Original Series ) and the uniforms have been adjusted slightly, the sets are slightly different. Remember the Enterprise existed as a little piece of [the show Discovery ] but now its its own object. When you close your eyes and think of the key sets and situations that you think of The Original Series , that's what we're looking to do.”

Because Strange New Worlds is literally taking place so close to The Original Series , it will be an interesting dance to see how exactly Pike, Spock, and everybody else is dressed. Will Spock switch back to a gold shirt at some point? (He wears gold in “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” the second TOS pilot episode.)

Who is in the cast of Strange New Worlds ?

Here’s the full regular cast of Strange New Worlds, all crew members of on the USS Enterprise NCC-1701:

  • Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike
  • Ethan Peck as Spock
  • Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley AKA “Number One”
  • Celia Rose Gooding as Cadet Nyota Uhura
  • Jess Bush as Nurse Christine Chapel
  • Babs Olusanmokun as Dr. M’Benga
  • Bruce Horak as Chief Engineer Hemmer (an off-shoot of the Andorian species called an Aenar.)
  • Christina Chong as Security Chief La’an Noonein-Singh
  • Melissa Navia as Flight Controller Lt. Erica Ortegas

Season 2 of Strange New Worlds will also feature Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk. (But we don’t know if he’s a Captain, yet.)

How does Strange New Worlds connect to Discovery and Short Treks ?

The 2018 Season 1 finale of Discovery ended with the arrival of the USS Enterprise, though we didn't see anyone inside. 2019’s Season 2 re-introduced Pike, Spock, and Number One. Captain Pike was in every single episode of Discovery Season 2, the adult Spock started appearing from episode 7 onward, and Number One appeared in three episodes.

After that, Pike appeared in three Short Treks , "Q&A," "The Trouble With Edward," and "Ask Not." Number One and Spock only appeared in "Q&A" and at the very end of "Ask Not."

These versions of Pike, Spock, and Number One are the in-canon versions of the characters previously portrayed by Jeffrey Hunter (Pike), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), and Majel Barrett (Number One) in the TOS episodes "The Cage" and "The Menagerie." However, from a contemporary point of view, you could view Strange New Worlds as a direct spin-off of Discovery Season 2.

Who are the showrunners of Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman . At least one episode, probably the premiere episode, will be written by Jenny Lumet. As of 2021, Akiva Goldsman is the co-showrunner of Strange New Worlds along with Henry Alonso Myers. Kirsten Beyer also has revealed that she will be part of the writers’ room in Season 2.

We don't know all the directors of Strange New Worlds episodes, but Will Riker himself , Jonathan Frakes, has already said he can't wait to work with the cast:

"I’ve had great experiences with all three of them. Anson and I worked through finding Captain Pike. And Ethan and I worked through finding who Spock was. And the mantle of Spock, in particular, was so complicated and so emotionally taxing and was such huge shoes to fill, and Ethan felt it. Rebecca and I have a long relationship from back on The Librarians , and we have a fabulous working shorthand, so it will be great getting back to the floor with three old friends."

In addition to directing two Trek films in the '90s ( First Contact and Insurrection ) Frakes directed episodes of The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager, Discovery, and Picard . He has also directed at least two episodes of Discovery Season 3.

Akiva Goldsman also confirmed he has directed the pilot episode of Strange New Worlds . Previously, he directed the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Picard .

How many episodes will be in Strange New Worlds Season 1?

Strange New Worlds Season 1 will run for 10 episodes.

How is Strange New World s different from other new Star Trek shows?

One of the biggest departures for Strange New Worlds will actually be a return of sorts. Since 2017, the various new Trek series have focused on heavily serialized seasons in which each episode must be watched in order to avoid being totally confused. Strange New Worlds is poised to return to stand-alone, episodic stories, a type of sci-fi storytelling that defined The Original Series and The Next Generation .

"We're going to try to harken back to some classical Trek values, to be optimistic, and to be more episodic," Akiva Goldsman told Variety in May 2020. "Our plots will be more closed-ended than you’ve seen in either Discovery or Picard . I imagine it to be closer to the original series than even DS9 . We can really tell closed-ended stories. We can find ourselves in episodes that are tonally of a piece."

Something Goldsman pointed out while on the official Star Trek aftershow, The Ready Room , was that the subgenres of Discovery and Picard were somewhat fixed, while TOS and TNG could hop genres week-to-week. Goldsman labeled Discovery as "science fiction/action-adventure" and Picard as "science fiction/drama." Some episodes of TOS and TNG are outright comedies("Trouble With Tribbles," or "Q-Pid"), while others are murder mysteries with barely any science fiction elements at all ("The Conscience of the King," or "Suspicions").

This is all to say that modern Trek seasons scan more like 10-15 hour long single episodes, whereas Strange New Worlds will focus more on self-contained episodes.

In April 2021, Goldsman doubled down on the episodic, stand-alone aspect of Strange New Worlds telling the Hollywood Reporter : “It's unlike the other [new] shows in that it's really episodic... Strange New Worlds is very much adventure-of-the-week but with serialized character arcs.”

Where can I watch Strange New Worlds ?

Strange New Worlds will stream on Parmount+ in the United States, on Crave in Canada, with a global rollout to be announced.

Strange New Worlds Does 3 Important Things That Bring Back Classic Star Trek

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds combines classic and modern elements with nostalgic details from the Original Series.
  • The show honors the franchise's past with updated designs and a modern touch.
  • Physical sets and makeup effects enhance the show's realism and personality, setting it apart in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is no stranger to using nostalgic details to boost its ongoing connection to Star Trek: The Original Series , and it does three important things to bring a classic Star Trek feel to an otherwise very modern production . In its first two seasons, Strange New Worlds ' characters , tropes, and creatures have introduced - and sometimes reimagined - essential aspects of Star Trek lore. The effortless blending of old and new makes the show an exciting prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series while encouraging a freshly modern take on the classic, established canon of past Star Trek projects.

The timeline of Star Trek TV shows and movies has been evolving for decades, and Strange New Worlds hasn't missed its opportunity to recognize the bygone eras of Star Trek . Strange New Worlds season 3 promises to bring even more new takes on quintessential characters, adding to the ranks of current regulars Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) to further its association with TOS . However, instead of relying only on characters to connect to the past, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds utilizes three authentically Star Trek tactics.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be Our Best Season So Far, Says Anson Mount

Anson Mount hypes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which he hints will take even bigger swings than the ambitious season 2 did.

Strange New Worlds' Sets Make The Show Feel Like Classic Star Trek

Detailed sets help strange new worlds seem more realistic.

The newest version of the USS Enterprise proves Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' commitment to its 20th-century roots through meticulous set design. Second only to its iconic characters, the settings of Star Trek have always been near and dear to the heart of the franchise. Some of the most memorable moments from the best Star Trek movies and TV shows have happened on one of the franchise's many starships, and these sets often make returning to these projects feel like coming home . The sets of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds show off a vintage mid-century style with a sleek, futuristic edge.

Strange New Worlds utilizes many physical callbacks to Star Trek: The Original Series , like featuring the classic console design and the familiar circular pads of the transporter room. Captain Pike's living and working quarters provide 1960s stylistic choices and personal touches like horse figurines and Earth artifacts, making the space feel more lived-in. While every version of the Starship Enterprise has its own unique style that demonstrates different time periods, Strange New Worlds ' flagship recreates sets incorporate the classic Original Series bridge and uses Star Trek: The Next Generation 's style of warp core, calling back to TNG 's episodic environment.

Instead of using a green screen to depict a computer-generated backdrop, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds opts for physical settings with personal touches.

By rethinking familiar sets from previous Star Trek shows, Strange New Worlds creates space to introduce new designs that could become as iconic as the scenery that inspired them. Instead of using a green screen to depict a computer-generated backdrop, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds opts for physical settings with personal touches . Remaining loyal to the franchise's past lets the show honor classic characters, but adding a modern edge adds anticipation for new characters in future seasons and other upcoming Star Trek projects . Sets in Strange New Worlds are closely tied to characters, and character design adds to the setting.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Makeup Gives Aliens More Character

Physical makeup effects instead of cgi help non-human characters feel personable.

Like its rejection of green screen backdrops, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds avoids computer-generated design for its alien characters. While Strange New Worlds ' first 2 seasons feature fewer recurring non-human characters than other Star Trek shows, its alien species have more personality thanks to their special effects makeup . Characters like Vulcan Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chief Engineer Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) have prosthetics in every scene, and this choice makes them more personable than post-production CGI. The old-fashioned makeup choices are evidence of the show's desire to remain realistic while still honoring Star Trek 's sci-fi origin.

While a few characters wear minimal prosthetic makeup throughout the show, guest stars offer Star Trek: Strange New Worlds its biggest dose of classic one-off Star Trek aliens. One-episode characters such as Orion pirate Remy (Michael Hough) and the puppeteered Buckley are the greatest testament to the special effects makeup team on Strange New Worlds . The Orions' green skin is a simple but eye-catching design, but Klingons are a species whose iconic look is harder to nail. After divided opinions regarding Star Trek: Discovery 's controversial Klingons , the makeup for Klingon Ambassador Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom) was among Strange New Worlds ' best accomplishments.

Strange New Worlds Made Star Trek's Gorn Scarier By Making Them Real

The gorn look and feel much scarier because they're hand-built animatronics.

The history of the Gorn in Star Trek canon is long and well-known, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds changed the Gorn in a big way . The Original Series is often mentioned and reimagined in newer Star Trek shows, but Strange New Worlds ' Gorn take updating the past to a whole new level by retconning the stiff, humanoid costumes of the 1960s. Instead, the new Gorn are a terrifyingly deadly new alien species threatening Starfleet, but they still have a hint of Star Trek: The Original Series ' lizard-like enemies, with greenish skin and wide, hungry eyes.

Strange New Worlds changed the Gorn a lot from their original introduction in 1967, but updating them was essential for making them scarier and more fitting for a modern production. To achieve this updated look, creatives behind the scenes chose a more traditional route when redesigning the Gorn. From fully grown, aggressive adults to the smallest of hatchlings, the Gorn in Strange New Worlds are predominantly physical creatures in real life . Unlike a computer-generated species, these puppets and animatronics were explicitly created to show up more realistically on screen.

As seen in Paramount+'s The Ready Room on YouTube, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Gorn are physical props on the set of the show. This change from CGI creatures featured in other Star Trek projects makes the Gorn scarier on screen , and actors also have the benefit of working face-to-face with their characters' terrifying adversary. Instead of acting against an unseen entity in front of a green screen, the cast of Strange New Worlds is subjected to real, physical creatures handled by crew members, moving and reacting in front of them in each scene.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a modern production with a vintage twist , incorporating both old and new techniques and technology to blend classic and contemporary aspects of Star Trek . Its set designs offer the show a classic feel, calling back to Star Trek: The Original Series and shows from the 90s era of Star Trek . The characters make the meticulously detailed sets come to life with more personable character design, thanks to old-fashioned makeup and traditional prosthetics. The newly designed Gorn offer Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the perfect adversary for a show determined to be both old and new.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 7 Crossover Ending Explained

Strange new worlds does 3 important things that bring back classic star trek, uhura & kirk's strange new worlds episode was “harder” than star trek’s musical for celia rose gooding.

  • Celia Rose Gooding and Tawny Newsome formed a real-life friendship through their roles in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks crossover episode.
  • Gooding praises Newsome as "the love of my life" and credits her for uplifting her and inspiring her character Uhura's growth.
  • The crossover episode allowed both actors to explore their comedic sides and brought a positive, joyful energy to the set.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' season 2 crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks sparked a real life friendship between Celia Rose Gooding and Tawny Newsome. Gooding plays Ensign Nyota Uhura, who helped welcome Star Trek: Lower Decks Ensigns Beckett Mariner (Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) to the USS Enterprise. Strange New Worlds ' comedic crossover directed by Jonathan Frakes was a smash hit with critics and audiences, and one happy result is Celia Rose Gooding and Tawny Newsome became actual besties.

Awards Radar interviewed Celia Rose Gooding about Star Trek: Strange New World s, where the Grammy Award-winning actor spoke effusively about her friendship with Tawny Newsome. Calling Newsome "the love of my life," Gooding explained how her real life friendship with Newsome reflected how Mariner helped inspire Uhura in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' crossover episode, "Those Old Scientists." Read Celia's quote below and check out Awards Radar 's full interview in the link above.

I think Uhura and Mariner, their relationship was so… I don’t know. It reminds me of how I love Tawny Newsome. Tawny Newsome is the love of my life. I love her so much. And so to get to work with her and really have a very honest conversation, it felt at times very much like Celia and Tawny talking as opposed to Uhura and Mariner, just because she was someone who I talked to a lot about just showing up in this franchise and how to be a person in Trek. I don’t know if I really ever expressed it to her as specifically as I will try to now, but she really just uplifted me in a way that made me feel so safe and so supported, and gave me such freedom to try new stuff and really take big swings comedically. I consider myself to be a really dramatic actor. And the comedic moments find them when they can, but I think, when it comes to me, the comedy has to be in the writing. And because we have such a stellar writing team, it worked out so well. But yeah, that scene when we’re in Uhura’s quarters and she’s opening up to Mariner saying that, “I don’t know what the future version of me is doing, but I am barely holding it together.” And Mariner is the one who teaches her how to relax and exhale and let her, at the time, very short hair down and take a little bit of pressure off herself. And that gave Uhura permission to move to a version of herself that is, again, more recognizable. I think the Uhura that generations of Trek fans have gotten to know and love is somebody a lot more relaxed than the Uhura that we’re seeing today. And she’s a lot more carefree, a lot more joyful, a lot more… She flirts with life. And I love that about her. I can’t wait to bring more of that to my Uhura as time goes on. But I think Mariner is one of the first people in canon that we’re seeing really just feed and uplift Uhura’s joy and uplift her confidence, which is something that she desperately needed more of in that season. And so, to be able to do that with somebody as just awesome as Tawny Newsome, it just felt real good. It felt really, really good. She is just a wonderful person and a wonderful actor and a wonderful medium and person and friend. And so, to be able to play opposite her and to really just be poured into by her, it felt very good for the character and for the greedy actor that lives within me. It was great. And Frakes is such a wonderful director. The three of them, Jack, Frakes and Tawny, they brought such a lightness and a… Ooh, come on language, find me. They just brought such a air of positivity and lightness and joy and ease to the room that was so necessary because they’re sandwiched in between.

Ensigns Boimler and Mariner from Star Trek: Lower Decks cross over into Strange New Worlds, but how do the get home, and do they harm the timeline?

Tawny Newsome's Mariner Is A Big Influence On Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Uhura

Sometimes, meeting your heroes is good..

Ensign Beckett Mariner meeting Ensign Nyota Uhura was a pivotal part of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Naturally, Uhura is a Starfleet icon to Mariner, who knows all about the 23rd century Communications Officer's achievements on the Starship Enterprise. But the young Uhura Mariner met is uncertain and lacks confidence, which is something the chaotic 24th century has in droves. It's a clever bit of writing for Mariner to help push Uhura along her path to becoming the Lt. Uhura Nichelle Nichols played in Star Trek: The Original Series , while Mariner learned it can be a very good thing to meet your heroes.

Celia Rose Gooding and Tawny Newsome reflect their characters, and Mariner and Uhura's, friendship in real life. Newsome is a seasoned and accomplished veteran of comedy and television, and she's now even a writer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy . Gooding is younger but still incredibly accomplished at this relatively early stage in her career. It's heartening to know Tawny and Celia hit it off in real life. Unlike Mariner and Uhura, who may not meet again on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Celia Rose Gooding and Tawny Newsome stay in touch and see each other when they can, including at Star Trek conventions.
