Ybor City Historical Walking Tour

In the fall of 1885 Vincente Martinez-Ybor purchased 40 acres of swampland and the saga of Ybor City began. Eventually, more than 230 factories were located here, employing 12,000 tabaqueros (cigar makers) and producing over half a billion cigars a year.

The rich history of Ybor encompasses manufacturing, immigration, organized crime and revolution.

The Official Ybor City Ghost Tour

A true “melting pot” of immigration, what began as an area populated largely by alligators and snakes grew to become home to tens of thousands of people within the span of just 40 years.

Along with the cigar workers who came from Cuba and Europe to make a new life in the New World, “Cigar City” hosted more than its share of villains, conspirators, Buccaneers, bandits and gangsters.

The $5.7 billion in visitor spending supports a total of $8.9 billion in sales across the county , these sales create more than  59,329 jobs with associated incomes of over $3 billion . Aside from jobs and income, Hillsborough residents benefit from tourism due to more than $535 million it generates in state and local taxes revenues .

We are funded in part by Tourism Development Collections (aka the bed tax) gathered in Hillsborough County from overnight visitors. These funds provide resources to support the base marketing, advertising, and promotions programs; office operations; partnership marketing; customer services; and administrative support functions that support all other departments.

At  Shell Key Preserve , you’ll paddle along mangroves, enjoy white sand beaches and sandbars, and search for incredible wildlife. Depending on the time of year, we see a variety of wildlife. In the summer months, keep your eyes peeled for a manatee or the beautiful pink Roseate Spoonbills. During the winter months, White Pelicans call the sandbars of Shell Key Preserve their home! Throughout the year, dolphins frolic in the crystal-clear waters of the preserve, and cormorants love to paddle alongside our tours. Even though we love showing our guests the wildlife within the preserve. Sightings are random and not guaranteed. Our Shell Key Preserve Clear Kayaks Tours take place in Tierra Verde, FL, right near St Pete Beach.

We also offer an evening  Glow Tour   of Shell Key Preserve . Our glow tours a unique nighttime adventure where you paddle through the preserve while our color-changing, waterproof LED lights illuminate the waters below your clear kayak.

Prior to working with Get Up and Go Kayaking, she guided tours through the waters of Captiva Island for 3 years! Her favorite thing about guiding kayak tours is that it is one of the least disruptive way to interact with nature and you never know what each tour will bring! A fun fact about Carmen is that being stung by a stingray led to her curiosity of the oceans!

Tampa Bay Tour Company goes to most haunted places in Ybor City

YBOR CITY, Fla. - Ybor City is considered to be one of the most haunted cities in America.

According to the Travel Channel, it hosts the 33rd and fourth most haunted buildings in the states. The famed Cuban Club is that fourth building.

With "Spooky Season" upon us, It's a good time to check in with the ghosts that haunt Tampa . 

The Tampa Bay Tour Company takes visitors around Ybor City.

The Tampa Bay Tour Company gave FOX 13 an inside look at some of the scariest places on the list. Max Herman is with the company, and he visits haunted spots regularly. 

"I like the skeptics that come my way because, as I said, seeing is believing," shared Herman.

The tour includes a stop inside the Centro Espanol building, once home to the Spanish Club. 

Locals say a safe in the Centro Espanol building is haunted.

Inside, there’s an old safe that's said to still be haunted by the man who died trying to break in, in 1908.  

"They're [ghosts] just as confused sometimes as we are when we make connections with the other side. Sometimes they're, you know, happy to see me. Sometimes, not so happy to see me," said Herman.

As much as I love to be out on the water and exploring, I never had a chance to explore Tampa’s waterways. As a Tampa Bay native, I could not let this stand. So, I set out on a mission to find something that was affordable and fun to go out on the water… for myself. It wasn’t until I started thinking about my childhood trips to Disney World that my idea grew. Located in the historic Ybor City neighborhood, a visit to Tampa Bay Rum Company is a delight, both for the rustic, festive atmosphere and to taste some fine rum samples. Your first stop is the appropriately decorated Buccaneer Bar, where proprietor Sam Meyers and master distiller Brad Bunn welcome visitors to their charming craft distillery.

The Rum Distillery Tour

The tour continues behind the scenes, with a walk through the barreling area into an immaculate production space where we find large fermenting tanks and their big copper pot still with rectifying columns.

Tampa Bay Rum Company uses top-grade molasses from Okeelanta Sugar Mills in South Florida for their seven day fermentation. Brad specifies different types of yeast for each fermentation at different temperatures to achieve the proper variations. The reserve rum is distilled at a lower proof for a slightly heavier bodied distillate.

Award Winning Rum

Brad has earned a reputation as a masterful rum maker. His premium Gasparilla Reserve — aged exclusively in 57 liter Maple Syrup Rye Whiskey Barrels — won Best In Class Craft Rum in the 2020 American Distillers Institute competition .

The 80 proof spiced rum ($29.99) made with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, clove and allspice is delicious. The rums that sell best in the tasting room are Coconut, followed by Scurvy Lime ($29.99) which really captures the essence of the local Florida citrus crop. The 80 proof white rum ($27.99) is a delightful expression which shows off Brad’s rum-making skills. A newer edition is a Butterscotch ($29.99), based on the spiced rum base with the addition of two types of butterscotch extract to emulate the taste profile of butterscotch candy.

The award-winning Gasparilla Reserve aged rum ($39.95) bottled at 92% is available only at the distillery.

McIlroy says he and Adam Scott also involved in Saudi meetings

Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott are joining Tiger Woods on the subcommittee directly involved in negotiating with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf, an addition to what the PGA Tour previously disclosed even though McIlroy says he’s been involved in discussions.

McIlroy said Thursday at the Wells Fargo Championship that while he is not on the PGA Tour Enterprises board, “I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee.”

It was yet another twist in the players’ involvement on the board. McIlroy resigned in November, and the other player directors voted to replace him with Jordan Spieth. Then, Webb Simpson said he would resign his seat but only if McIlroy would replace him.

McIlroy was willing, but he said there was “a subset of people on the board that were maybe uncomfortable with me coming back on for some reason.”

The PGA Tour sent out a release Thursday night confirming Joe Gorder, the chairman and CEO of Texas-based Valero, would be the inaugural chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises. It also listed McIlroy and Scott on the transactional subcommittee — along with Woods, Gorder, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, John W. Henry of Fenway Sports Group and Joe Ogilvie, the director liaison.

McIlroy said he was on a call with the group Sunday that last 1 1/2 hours as it went over a 150-page document on a future model, among other things.

“I’m not on the board, but I’m in some way involved in that transaction committee,” McIlroy said. “I don’t have a vote so I don’t have I guess a meaningful say in what happens in the future, but at least I feel like I can be helpful on that committee.

“And that was sort of a compromise for I guess not getting a board seat.”

A person directly involved with the PGA Tour Enterprises board was surprised Thursday to hear Woods was the only player involved because the person thought McIlroy and Scott were supposed to be part of the subcommittee. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because board matters are to be kept private.

Simpson suggested as much Wednesday when he spoke of player directors supporting McIlroy being involved based on his ideas and experience.

“I just think his views are important, and the other guys feel the same,” Simpson said. “We kind of had to figure out, ‘OK, where is his place? How can we hour our role as board members ... but also bring in a guy at least to voice his ideas and just see how he can help us.”

Monahan had said McIlroy not returning to the board was “in no way a commentary on Rory’s important perspective and influence.” He said it was more sticking to the process of how a player becomes a board member.

Scott joined the PGA Tour in January. Other players on the board are Woods, Spieth, Simpson, Patrick Cantlay and Peter Malnati, with Ogilvie — a former player — as a liaison director.

The PGA Tour already has Strategic Sports Group as a minority investor, and is working on a similar deal with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
