Tawang Itinerary – About Tawang Valley | Tawang History

Beautiful landscape near Tawang

It is imperative to understand briefly the history of Tawang India and the legends associated with it before delving into the attractions and experiences that await you there. The origins of Tawang city date back to medieval times and are lost in the grey corridors of time.

Tawang is synonymous with the monastery that stands as its best-known icon and the history of both are inextricably linked.

Legend has it that, sometime in the latter half of the 17th century (1680-81), Merak LamaLodre Gyatso arrived from Lhasa on the instructions of the 5th Dalai Lama . His mission was to build a Buddhist monastery in the land of the Monpas . The land of the Monpa tribe stretched across what are now the districts of Tawang and West Kameng.

Merak Lama sat in deep meditation, hoping for divine guidance about where the monastery should come up. When he emerged from his meditation, he found his horse missing. He went in search of his horse and found it grazing on a beautiful and verdant hill that looked over the valley.

He found the place, perfect for a monastery, and taking this incident as a divine instruction, he decided to build the monastery there.

Tawang Monastery

In the year 1680-81, the Tawang Monastery came up , it shone like a pearl, perched on a high cliff, caressed by clouds, a truly mystical place, and the perfect abode of the spirit of Buddhism. The monastery was known as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse, which in Tibetan means, “the complete paradise of divine victory .

“ The town that came up around the monastery came to be known as Tawang , which literally translates in Tibetan as “ chosen by the horse .”

Tawang has had a chequered political history. It was under the Tibetan administration till 1950, when Tibet lost its autonomy, and became a part of the Peoples’ Republic of China. Tawang thus came under the control of the Chinese. It was in the year 1951, that India finally took control of Tawang.

However, the 1962 war with China saw Tawang fall to the Chinese forces and was in their control for a brief period before the ceasefire and withdrawal of the Chinese army. In spite of this somewhat chaotic history, Tawang is enveloped in an aura of calm and serenity and exudes a mystical charm.

A Week-long trip To Tawang and Bum la including Bomdilla, Dirang, and Sangti Valley – Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to dirang .

We start from the Guwahati airport in the morning and enjoy our drive through the golden fields of Assam before we start ascending the hills of Arunachal Pradesh , taking a newly built road that makes for a fantastic drive and even better views.

On our way, we stop by the beautiful Gyuto monastery and spend some time exploring it. We stop for lunch at a small Tibetan settlement en route for lunch before proceeding further ahead. We halt at a lovely little town Dirang, overlooking two mountain rivers, for the night.

Day 2 – Dirang to Tawang.

We start for Tawang today and en route stops at the Nyukmadung war memorial and pay our respect to the fallen soldiers there.

Next, we stop at the mighty Se la and soak in the gorgeous views on and around it. We visit & pay our respect at the Tawang war memorial there and then warm ourselves with piping-hot tea at the army canteen there before we resume our onward journey. We stop for a small stroll by the lovely Sela Lake if time permits and then start for our next stop, the Nuranang waterfall, the sheer grandness of which is sure to make your jaws drop.

We reach our lovely homestay in Tawang by late evening and call it a day.

Day 3 – Tawang Tour.

We start our day by visiting the largest monastery in the world, the Tawang Monastery . We explore the place at our own pace before heading to the Urgeling monastery, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama and the Ani Gompa.

In the evening, we visit the war memorial and experience the light and sound show there.

Day 4 – Penga Teng Tso, Madhuri Lake and Bumla.

We start early today to explore the beautiful lakes and valleys in the higher reaches of the region. On our way to our first stop, the Penga Teng Tso, we drive through what was once the battlefield.

The scars of the war can be seen scattered all around. From there we head to the uniquely beautiful Sungester Lake , also known as the Madhuri lake of Koyla (the Bollywood movie) fame.

Finally, we head towards the India-China border at Bum-la and spend some time at the border before starting our return journey to Tawang.

Day 5 – Tawang to Bomdila/Dirang.

We drive down to the Buddhist town of Dirang/Bomdilla today, taking the same road we took on our way up to Tawang. Only this time we will stay at a unique and special place for the night instead of staying at the same homestay (if staying in Bomdila ). By evening, we reach Bomdilla and stay in the monastery for the night(if available) or else at a lovely Monpa homestay, of course after exploring it.

If we stay at Dirang, it will probably be the same wonderful Dirang homestay of ours that will be your stay for the night.

Day 6 – Bomdila/Dirang to Gauhati.

We wake up early today so that we can explore the monastery once again, this time while the monks are busy praying.

After a hearty breakfast at the monastery, we start our return journey back to Guwahati which marks the end of this beautiful trip.

We were planning to visit the North East and some ease to access locations. We got in touch with NatureWings who suggested and designed the package for us which was for 6 days including 2 days stay each at Shillong, Cherrapunjee and Kaziranga. Naturewings had got our hotels booked and arranged for a cab pick up from the Guwahati airport who stayed with us during our journey and then finally dropped us back to the airport at Guwahati at the end of the trip. I must say not only the trip well planned but the choice of stay and the points to visit at the various tourist spots was very well thought of. The cab operator who was a local person was very friendly and helpful. He acted as guide to us and advised and informed us on points of interest. We had stayed at Orchid Lake Resort Barapani and Barbareek Inn at Shillong, at Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort at Cherrapunjee and at Wild Grass Resort at Kaziranga. The stay at these places were very comfortable and along with the tranquility and scenic beauty Orchid, Cherrapunjee Resort and Wild Grass Lodge it turned out to be a very memorable and enjoyable stay. Naturewings were also regularly in touch with us and though we really didn't need any help as everything was very well planned out. Must mention the support we got from Ms Arpita and later Mr. Ratul who kept in regular touch.

Leena Prabhu

We have taken Kaziranga and Arunachal Trip through NatureWings in this year January month. It was Nine Nights trip with my three friends and their families. Our trip includes Kaziranga, Tawang, Dirang, Bomdila and Bhalukpong. We are from Mumbai and we got the reference of NatureWings from one of my close friend, who took the North East Package Tour from NatureWings last year and suggested me to take the Kaziranga Package Tour along with Arunachal with NatureWings only as they were extremely happy with NatureWings Service. So after a discussion, we did lots of customization as our choice and they revised the itinerary happily so many times. We have planned for Kaziranga Jungle Safari for long and our first day was in Kaziranga Jungle and on the next day early morning we took the famous Kaziranga Elephant Safari . It was only once in a life time experience as we could see the One Horn Rhinos just from few metre distance. In the afternoon, we took the Kaziranga Jeep Safari in the central range and that too was great experience. We stayed in a nice resort close to Kaziranga Western Range and resort was very beautiful with nice ambience, food and service were extremely good. Next day, we started for Western Aurnachal and we visited Bomdila, Tawang, Diranga and Bhalukpong and overall Arunachal experience was also very good. Thank you NatureWings for providing best experience in our North East Package.

We were very confused about whether to choose Arunachal Pradesh as our holiday destination but NatureWings, especially Suman convinced us that it will be a good journey and he made it. Thank u, Suman. You made it. We were fascinated by the enchanting beauty of Arunachal. It's really a gem in the North East travel sector. The hotels, homestay, the driver provided were really commendable and cordial especially when you are traveling such an extreme part of any location, The driver must be very friendly, faithful, and cordial and that one provided by NatureWings was perfect. Thank you, Suman and NatureWings for such a nice and perfect trip.

Arunachal Holiday Package

We booked our Arunachal Tour for Nov 2019 end. We were 6 persons traveling from Mumbai. We reached Gauhati by air and from there, our Arunachal Tour started with a tour guide cum driver provided by NatureWings. In this remote off-beat destination like Arunachal, you have to depend entirely on your driver and thankfully we got a decent and cordial driver throughout our Arunachal Tour. On our return, we visited Kamakhya Temple and offered puja. It was a nice trip. Mr. Suman from NatureWings deserves a Kudos.

It was such an amazing tour to Arunachal Pradesh that I can't get over it even after a year of our visit especially the quaint town of Tawang. Our family planned to have an incredible vacation to this North Eastern State with our journey starting from Guwahati and covering beautiful places like Bhalukpong, Dirang, Tawang, Bomdila, Tezpur, and Kaziranga. The destination was great, and we enjoyed a lot while staying in good accommodation amidst the mountains, quiet nature with serenity and peace was true bliss.

Tawang is a beautiful place to visit while on a North East Package Tour and in early 2020 we got a chance to explore this beautiful place amidst the tough mountains. The highlight of this place is its 400 years old Tawang monastery along with few ads on nearby places like Jaswant Singh Memorial, Nuranang falls, Bumla Pass, Sangetsar Lake, and War memorial. Although the place was undoubtedly great with a good stay, but the food is an issue here as my mother being vegetarian had to rely upon minimal options, but other than that we had a great family time.

But before you learn about different sample tour itineraries for Tawang you must also know about the facts that make it so special amongst the tourists. Learn a little more about your next destination and some interesting facts about the valley!

Tawang has unmatched natural beauty and to discover it, you will have to take the sinuous road that cut through the vertical hills and high passes while leaving behind the gushing rivers at its depth. Here the snowy mountains rise above the clouds to touch the blue skies and the cascading waterfalls plunge from the luxuriant hills to allure your senses.

This heavenly highland lies in the northwestern part of Arunachal Pradesh sharing an international border with Bhutan to its southwest and China Occupied Tibet to the north. It is the land of the peace-loving Monpa community who are believed to be the only nomadic tribe in Northeast India.

The word ‘Tawang’ is a mix of two different words from the local Monpa dialect ‘Ta’ and ‘Wang’ where the former means Horse (Ta) and the latter signifies blessed or found (Wang). It is said that in the 17 th century, the 5 th Dalai Lama assigned a Buddhist priest named Merag Lama Lodre Gyatso or Mera Lama to establish a monastery in this region. For day and night, he kept searching for an ideal place but even after his intense scouting, he couldn’t find any suitable plot for the monastery.

Upset with his failure, Mera Lama retired into a cave to offer prayers to get divine interventions to choose a perfect site. After coming out of the cave he noticed that his horse is missing. Later when he found his horse, it was grazing at a surreal mountain top. He was mesmerized to see such an amazing greener pasture and took it as divine guidance to establish the monastery at the same place. This is how the monastery got its name and so does the town next to it.

Interesting Facts About Tawang Valley

5. Tawang region is also claimed by the People’s Republic of China as a part of South Tibet, under Tsona Dzong of Shannan, Tibet.

6. It is through Tawang that His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama entered India after he escaped Tibet in 1959.

7. During the Sino-Indian War of 1962, Tawang was captured by the ruthless Chinese army but later they withdrew their forces after the war got over.

8. There are many existing villages like Thembang, Zemithang and Sangti Valley that boast the rich ancient history and legacy of the tribes inhabiting the region since time immemorial.

9. The region also boasts the highest mountain of Arunachal Pradesh, the sacred Gori Chen Peak or Sa-Nga Phu with a height of 22,500 ft.

11. Tsangestar Tso is one of the most famous high altitude lakes near Tawang and it is also popular as Madhuri Lake because of the Indian Army who named it after the famous Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit who visited this lake for shooting 90’s Hindi blockbuster film ‘Koyla’.

How to Reach Tawang

Fly or take a train to Guwahati, the gateway to Northeast India and travel in a taxi to Tawang. Guwahati is well connected with the rest of India through all modes of travel, hence it is convenient to start your tour from this place. It gets dark early in Arunachal Pradesh and as soon as 4.30 pm in winters and at around 6.00 pm in summers so it is advised to begin early in the morning.

If you plan to travel through the old route then you can board a Guwahati-Tezpur bus and hire a taxi from this place. Please note that there will be a difference in cost if you do such break journeys because the taxi rates are still not standardized in this part of India and you may end up paying more. You may also prefer to hire a self-driven car or a motorcycle with a unique itinerary from a tour operator.

Ask for a quotation for your Tawang tour itinerary from the Guwahati, Tezpur and Bomdila based operators and compare the prices to take the final decision. But one thing that you must know is that it takes a minimum of 6 days to enjoy a perfect tour of Tawang and there is no shortcut to it. Plan it wisely and go through our detailed Tawang tour itinerary for reference.

Until a few years back, this used to be the only way to reach Tawang. As you move further from Bomdila, you will drive past the fluttering prayer flags and cold mountain passes to reach Tawang.

The other important monasteries nearby the town are Urgelling Gompa and the Khinmey Monastery. Urgelling Gompa is a hidden gem and it is around 5 km from the town. Very less frequented by usual tourists but this revered gompa is a birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama. With paintings of Dalai Lamas and foot/head imprints in stone, it is one cozy building steeped in history.

Your monastery sighting will end after visiting the Khinmey Monastery of the Nyingmapa sect (Red Hat). It is a major shrine of this particular sect that used to flourish in the Tawang region before the emergence of Gelugpa sect (Yellow Hat). This 600 hundred-year-old monastery is located below Tawang near the Lhou village.

Come back to your hotel for lunch and take rest for sometime before heading to the ‘ Craft center of Tawang ’. Craft center displays the finest traditional and religious art and crafts of the Monpas. You can even buy traditional crafts like bronze statues, Shongbu utensils, masks and incense sticks from emporium nearby. After your shopping, you can go to the Tawang war memorial. It is built according to the Buddhist tradition in the memory of the brave Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the 1962 war. Day 5 – Bum La Day Excursion

On your way to Bumla pass you can also visit Singshur Nunnery, Taktsang Gompa – one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in Arunachal Pradesh, Pangateng Tso Lake and Sangetsar or Madhuri Lake .

Not far from the fork on the Tawang-Bumla Road is the Singshur nunnery. It is calm and serene ‘all woman’ monastery housing sculptures related to dynasties that ruled the region in the past. After visiting the nunnery your next stop is at Bumla Pass at 15,200 ft . This pass connects India with Tibet & China. In 1950, His Holiness the 14 th Dalai Lama escaped from Tibet and entered India via Bumla Pass. You can stay here for about 30 minutes and walk to the Indo-China borderline with army personnel to see the mountain tops on the other side from where the Chinese army keeps a watch on the Indian Territory. You will be inspired to see our soldiers performing their duties at such hard weather conditions.

After Bumla Pass go to the holy Taktsang Monastery . This is the most important place for the Monpas and a sacred Tibetan Buddhist pilgrimage site. It is said that Guru Padmasambhava consecrated this monastery and also meditated here. Situated on a cliff surrounded by lush green and dense coniferous forest a trip to this place will surely awaken your spiritual senses. Sangtesar Lake is just 5 km from this place and it can be covered while going back to Tawang along with the Pangateng Tso Lake .

Sangtesar Lake is a beautiful high altitude lake in the middle of the snow-capped mountains. Walk around the lake and spend some time in the midst of a peaceful nature and immaculate landscape. Scenic offbeat Destinations in the Tawang Sector

The mountain valleys of the Tawang region are dotted with some amazing tiny scenic villages which are ideal destinations to find solace from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although not many details are available on the internet about these villages offering stunning views, absolute tranquillity, serenity and peace of mind. Here is the list of five offbeat villages that you can add in your Tawang tour itinerary,

Sangti Valley – Sangti Valley is near Dirang at a distance of seven km from the old village. Dotted with Kiwi and Apple orchards, a visit to this valley will surely be a delightful experience. It is the most picturesque valley in all of West Kameng district with green landscape, meandering river and unusual architecture. Click on the link to know more about this unheard destination of Arunachal Pradesh.

Thembang Fortified Village – Located 55 km northeast of Bomdila, Thembang fortified village is under the tentative list of UNESCO heritage sites . It is an ancient Monpa village with high cultural and historical significance. It has several ancient historical structures and a fortified Dzong which was built using the traditional locally available materials. Due to the structural and architectural richness of the village, the locals consider the entire village of Thembang as a monument.

Thembang Dzong is believed to be constructed before 1100 CE and it bears exceptional testimony to the living cultural traditions of the Monpa tribe depicting the influence of diverse cultures of the Bhutanese, the Tibetans and the indigenous North East Indian.

Zemithang – A hidden paradise in the extreme northwest of Tawang region bordering Bhutan and China is Zemithang. It is approximately 90 km from Tawang town and it can be added as a full day tour option in your tour itinerary. The route from Tawang to Zemithang has a thick forest with waterfalls naturally marking the road as milestones. Zemithang is a famous pilgrimage site for the Tibetan Buddhist known as Gorsam Chorten.

Gorsam Chorten is located five km before reaching Zemithang and has a giant stupa that is believed to be built in the early part of the 12 th century by a monk named Sangey Pradha. It is the largest stupa in the area or probably in all of Arunachal Pradesh, having a close resemblance with the Boudhanath Chorten in Kathmandu, Nepal. There are only three stupas of this kind, in Nepal, Bhutan and near Zimithang.

This place also has some of the most scenic short trekking trails but you need prior permission from the border forces to step out on these trails.  His Holiness, the 14 th Dalai Lama escaped from Lhasa to Tawang via Khenzamani which is just 10 km from Zemithang and even the Chinese entered through this route during the Sino-Indian War.

On your way to Zemithang you can also visit the spectacular Bap Teng Kang aka BTK Waterfall.

Shergaon – Shergaon is a small village in the West Kameng district and locally it is also as Shenthuk or Sherbumtang. Surrounded by lofty foothills of the eastern Himalayas, Shergaon valley is a fertile land with three rivers Natu Kho, Peng Leng Kho and Chowskorong Kho flowing through the village. You must include this destination in your Tawang tour itinerary if you seek peace and solitude.

Walk around the village and meet the friendly villagers. You can also explore different horticulture farms of this village. Shergaon is known for its Apple, Walnut, Plum, Chestnut, Peach, Cherry, Pear, Pomegranate and Kiwi. The best is Apple at this place and there are more than 15 different varieties of apples grown in this tiny village and its adjoining areas.

The people of Shergaon are expert fishermen as well as hunters and some of the fishing techniques are so unique to this village that you can never find them anywhere else in the outside world. There are two beautiful monasteries that you can also visit near Shergaon.

Charlie Woods’ road to Pinehurst begins Thursday.

Woods, the son of 82-time TOUR winner Tiger Woods, will compete in an 18-hole U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday at The Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The younger Woods is slated to tee off at 8:18 a.m. ET Thursday.

The road to the U.S. Open features 109 local qualifying sites across April and May, leading to 13 Final Qualifying sites in late May and early June. Final Qualifying is known as Golf's Longest Day, requiring competitors to navigate 36 holes to earn a tee time at the season’s third major championship.

To be eligible for qualifying, a player must have a Handicap Index not exceeding 0.4 or be a professional.

The elder Woods is a three-time U.S. Open champion, but he has yet to win at Pinehurst No. 2. Tiger Woods finished T3 at Pinehurst in 1999, two strokes back of winner Payne Stewart, and he placed solo second at the venerable venue in 2005, two back of Michael Campbell. He didn’t compete at Pinehurst in 2014.

Earlier this spring, Charlie Woods competed in a pre-qualifier for the TOUR’s Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, his first foray at attempting to qualify for a TOUR-sanctioned event. The younger Woods shot 86 that day but will look to apply learnings in Thursday’s U.S. Open local qualifier.

Tiger and Charlie Woods have paired together in the last four PNC Championships, the two-player team event contested each December that utilizes a scramble format. Team Woods finished runner-up in 2021 but has yet to win the event.

Other notables in the field at Woods' site include Cameron Kuchar (son of Matt), Sunny Kim, Garrett Willis, Reed Greyserman (brother of Max), Austin Lemieux (son of Mario) and Michael Buttacavoli.
