Halifax Titanic Cemeteries

Visiting the Titanic cemeteries is a heart-wrenching experience.  I was not sure what to expect and found myself pondering what it must have been like for the people on the Titanic that fateful night.  And what it must have been like for the people of Halifax and how the tragedy overwhelmed the city.

titanic graveyard halifax tour

I did not see the cemeteries as a tourist attraction but as a place to pay solemn respect to all who perished as well to those who survived.  A visit to these sites can be quite emotional given the extent of the tragedy.

The 3 cemeteries used were Fairview Lawn (121 graves), Mount Olivet (19 graves) and Baron de Hirsch (10 graves). Each cemetery has informational panels indicating the location of the grave sites.

titanic graveyard halifax tour

I met a lady from Australia when I was there.  Her great uncle perished in the sinking and she was looking for his gravesite.  She did not seem to know much about what else there was to see so I gave her my map of the titanic interest points.  She was so grateful. She was amazed at the Halifax connection to the Titanic.

The layout of the tombstones at Fairview Lawn is interesting.  They are arranged in the shape of a ship's hull.  Most of the grave markers are the same.  These ones were paid for by the owner of the Titanic.

Some graves remained without any names for a long time.  Modern technology has helped to identify those graves.  Information markers in the cemeteries explain how this came about.

Did you know there are many Titanic connections throughout Nova Scotia?  There are numerous community museums and locations who have displays, collections and stories about the Titanic . Check out my eBook, The Titanic in Nova Scotia , and learn where you can find them.

The 'Unknown Child'

One thing that cannot be missed is the grave of the ‘ unknown child ’ at Fairview Lawn. This can be especially heartbreaking. When no one came forward for the little boy, the crew of the Mackay-Bennett took care of the funeral arrangements. It was  the crew of this cable ship that had found him.

To this day, visitors leave flowers and teddy bears for the baby.  This is probably the most sought after gravesite in all of the Titanic cemeteries.

titanic graveyard halifax tour

It is remarkable that 95 years after the disaster, DNA testing was able to identify the child as Sidney Goodwin from Britain.  His parents and siblings also perished but his body was the only one recovered.

titanic graveyard halifax tour

And then there is the pair of child ’ s shoes that were donated to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in 2002. They came from the family of a police sergeant who was working in Halifax at the time of the disaster.

The Halifax police department was given the responsibility of guarding the personal belongings of victims. A small pair of shoes was among the belongings.  Instead of seeing the shoes destroyed the police sergeant kept them.

The story and the shoes remained in the family. The sergeant ’ s grandson decided in 2002 to donate the shoes to the museum.

After much investigation the museum was sure that the shoes were authentic. They were also very sure the shoes belonged to the little boy known as the ‘ unknown child ’ .  These shoes were very important in the investigation to the child's identity.

The shoes are now on display in the museum.  Halifax will never forget little Sidney Goodwin.

Finding the Titanic Cemeteries

Check out my Halifax map to find the location of the Fairview Lawn, Mount Olivet and Baron de Hirsch cemeteries.  The Baron de Hirsch is now known as the Beth Israel Synagogue Cemetery.

There is a wide variety of places to stay in the city and in the surrounding areas. Check out my Halifax Hotels page!

You will find many fine restaurants in Halifax. The restaurant scene has grown a lot over the last couple of years and there is something for everyone!

Paul Mc Neil was awesome. The tour is listed as a 4 plus hour tour and we were with him for almost 7 hours. It was fantastic. I can't believe that one person could know so much about this beautiful city. He had great knowledge on History, architecture, government and the local museums and restaurants. While driving around he would show us contrasts from old to new buildings. He had lots of historical pictures on his large iPad to show us at different locations. He even had small video clips of some historical events. We hit all of the highlights of the city including a cemetery where some of the Titanic victims are buried and the Citidel. We were there for the firing of the cannon at Noon. Very knowledgable about the Titanic and the infamous Halifax explosion during world war 1. We had lunch in Fisherman's cove in a private room and we put in an order ahead of time so we did not have to wait at all. He said that it was the best fish and chips and he was not kidding, truly the best fish & Chips I have ever had and I don't general like fish. I could go on and on but let me just say that you CAN'T GO WRONG BOOKING PAUL.

Absolutely Outstanding Tour... Let me just start by telling you that Paul has a passion for history in general and Halifax in particular...and it shows. The van in which we traveled was clean and comfortable. Paul's commentary as we traveled between stops was interesting and intriguing. He took his time and happily answered our many questions. It felt as though a friend or relative from Halifax was driving us around and showing us the sights. Lunch at the Wharf Seafood Restaurant in Fisherman's Cove, an off the beaten path, local eatery that I'm sure no one else will take you too, was more than outstanding. The fish and chips were so good they might just be worth a trip back from New Jersey. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour to anyone visiting Halifax and I would also recommend booking early. Paul has a very well deserved reputation and the limited seats available fill up quickly.

We had Emerson as our tour guide. He was fantastic. The Ford Expedition was very comfortable for the four of us. He was very knowledgeable and took us to the changing of the guard , beautiful gardens as well as the titanic cemetery. We also ate at a lovely seafood place for lunch. Such personal interest in our group and a great conversationalist he was!

Thank You Marci J for taking the time to review Your Tour with Emerson

We were lucky enough to book Paul McNeils Halifax Titanic Historical Tour on September 20, 2019. This is a really grand tour. The tour vehicle was so comfortable and Paul was simply a wealth of information. We were so pleased that Halifax weathered Hurricane Dorian so well. We arrived in Halifax two weeks after the hurricane and much of the debris was already cleaned up. Halifax is a beautiful city. Paul explained that the two events that shaped Halifax were the were the explosion of 1917 and the sinking of the Titanic. We visited 2 Titanic cemeteries, which was very moving. We also visited an actual working fishing village and ate at the Off the Hook restaurant. The fish was some of the freshest we have eaten. Paul has a large tablet mounted in his van and that allowed him to show us pictures and videos all day. Paul is so organized and this was one of the best tours ever. Don't miss the chance to learn about this wonderful city.

Thank you Lindsay for your very kind words

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Paul is both knowledgeable and passionate about the rich history of Halifax. The tour lasted over six hours and was such fun that the time flew by. I highly recommend this tour particularly for cruise ship passengers who are only stopping for the day.

Thank you Guy Z for your kind words

Halifax Public Gardens with the Victorian kiosk built in 1836, Nova-Scotia, Canada

They say the best things in life are free—and the abundance of free things to see and do in Halifax and the surrounding area certainly makes a case for just that. The small but mighty city is filling up with high-end restaurants and world-class bars but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank in order to get a feel for Nova Scotia’s best-in-class offerings.

The following are some of the best places for first-timers to visit in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and they’re all totally free of charge.

Crystal Crescent Provincial Park

If you spend most of your visit in Halifax proper, it can be easy to forget the fact that you’re right on the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. If time permits, hop in the car and drive the coast to Crystal Crescent Provincial Park . In the summer, the beaches are ripe for swimming and soaking up the sun, while the winter months (albeit chilly) boast jaw-dropping, moody seascapes.

Halifax Central Library

Voted one of the most beautiful libraries in the world by Wired.com, a stop at the Halifax Central Library is well worth it—whether you bring your library card or not. Grab a coffee at the resident cafe if you feel so inclined and make your way to the rooftop, which boasts panoramic views of downtown and the Halifax Harbor.

Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market

One of the best ways to get to know the true pulse of a city is to visit its farmers’ market and the Seaport Market is no exception. Tucked into the edge of the Halifax Waterfront, the Seaport Market boasts unparalleled views of the harbor and of George’s Island National Historic Site, as well as the best produce and homemade goods the city has to offer.

WWE Raw Results, Winners And Grades After Great Wyatt Sicks Follow-Up

Amazon prime day 2024: this year’s dates and details are finally here, dana white is ‘not thrilled’ with long-time ufc contender, halifax public gardens.

The Halifax Public Gardens is a great way to spend the afternoon in Halifax; the Victorian-era gardens date back to the Canadian Confederation in 1867 and as such, it’s one of the best places in the city, or perhaps the country, to see carefully manicured mature trees and foliage. The gardens are right on the corner of Spring Garden Road and Summer Street which makes it easy to pop in for a quick visit if you’re short on time or craving a break from the shops and restaurants downtown.

Fairview Lawn Cemetery

It’s not the infamous Cementerio de la Recoleta in Buenos Aires or the celebrity-laden Cimetière du Père-Lachaise in Paris, but the Fairview Lawn Cemetery is still a necropolis worth visiting if you’re at all interested in sailing history. The cemetery holds the graves of more than a hundred Titanic victims, including, oddly enough, a grave marked J. Dawson.

RMS Titanic surfaces again at Halifax Public Gardens

Replica ship is the third to be placed in griffin's pond in three decades.

A group of people is seen sitting on a bank with a large Titanic model in the water in the foreground.

The RMS Titanic still lies in the inky depths of the North Atlantic after its ill-fated maiden voyage more than a century ago but a model of the ship returned to Griffin's Pond in the Halifax Public Gardens on Saturday.

An enthusiastic crowd lined the banks of the pond to watch as the latest model was rowed out to its mooring spot.

Two men are seen in a rowboat pulling a model of the Titanic behind them

Built by Brad Browne of the Maritime Ship Modelers Guild, the new replica ship is the third to grace the pond and the first to be 3D-printed.

The first Titanic model was placed in the pond in the mid-1990s.

Browne documented the construction of the 90-kilogram replica online, noting that some of the modules used in the project took 50 hours to print.

A plastic model of the Titanic in progress is seen sitting outside a garden workshop.

The printed modules are reinforced with multiple layers of fibreglass.

A metal keel strike plate is fitted inside and outside to provide support and act as ballast.

An excited Deanna Ryan-Meister, president of the Titanic Society of Atlantic Canada, was at the Public Gardens to see the new model moved into position.

A replica of the Titanic floats in a body of water with the bank of a pnd in the background.

According to Ryan-Meister, there is a tradition of launching pond models in Victorian gardens dating back to the 1800s.

She credited the large turnout for the event to the fact it coincided with the 40th anniversary party for the Friends of the Public Gardens and was held on a weekend.

Ryan-Meister said the previous Titanic launches were staged on weekday mornings in April or May, limiting the number of people who could attend.

She said the presence of the model is a poignant reminder of the role Halifax played after the Titanic struck an iceberg south of the Grand Banks and sank on April 15, 1912.

The RMS Titanic hit an iceberg on April 14, 1912 during its maiden voyage.  Of the more than 2,200 individuals on board, approximately 1,500 perished in its sinking in the North Atlantic Ocean

Ships were dispatched from Halifax to respond to the disaster and 150 of the victims brought back to the city were buried in Halifax cemeteries. Ryan-Meister said the local effort took nearly two months.

"That's how long the recovery took and the burial of bodies and things like that," she said. "So when people come, they get that sense of the Titanic history. It keeps the history alive."
