When it comes to smiles, Tom Cruise ‘ s teeth might take the cake. More than three decades into his career, the action star — who has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters , including Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Top Gun   — is still one of the hottest stars, and it’s all thanks to his impeccable acting chops and winning good looks.

But no matter how phenomenal he is as an actor, fans can’t help but notice that Tom’s 100-watt grin has one tooth that’s just a bit out of place. In fact, you can see from photos that his teeth aren’t exactly symmetrical with the center of his face. Many have noticed that Tom’s right front tooth is just a tad askew and has been widely referred to as his “middle tooth” for quite a while now.

Tom has certainly put in the time and effort to achieve the smile he has today. Just after his split from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the Hollywood veteran got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems. He proudly showed them off while walking the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report .

The  Jerry Maguire actor has never been shy about flaunting his less-than-perfect smile. When he played Steve Randle in 1983’s The Outsiders , a young Tom voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

Despite his dental imperfection, Tom has never lacked confidence. In 1985, only a couple of years after his career took off, the genetically blessed star explained why he decided to embrace his newfound sex symbol status. “It doesn’t bother me at all,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.”

Fans have never seemed to mind his unique grin. Since he was thrust into the spotlight in the early ‘80s, Tom has remained one of Hollywood’s hunkiest actors. He stepped back into his role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick . The action movie was a huge hit at the box office, becoming the New York native’s first film to gross $1 billion worldwide, per People .

Fans could not help but notice Tom’s timeless look in the film, sparking major social media attention along with his costars Miles Teller and Glen Powell . He promoted the sequel on red carpets all over the world with his dashing looks, proving that he is ageless. Of course, he rocked his best accessory — his smile!

Although it doesn’t seem like it, the Edge of Tomorrow actor — who was just 20 years old at the time — actually started off his career with a set of chompers that were very discolored and extremely unaligned. According to Heightline , Tom initially fixed this issue with teeth whitening and alignment procedures.

Considering Tom has one of the most famous smiles in the world, the actor didn’t want to draw attention to his face while trying to improve his teeth around 2001. Luckily, he was able to opt for invisible braces with ceramic brackets.

It wasn’t long before Tom was out and about smiling like normal!

Tom Cruise’s Smile Is Not as Perfect as It Seems Because of This One Thing

Taylor Swift Is Having 'Separation Anxiety' With Travis Kelce

When it comes to smiles, Tom Cruise ’s teeth might take the cake — unless you look very closely . More than three decades in to his career, Tom is still one of the hottest actors in showbiz. He’s starring in the upcoming film Mission: Impossible — Fallout , scheduled for release on July 27, and we know his impeccable acting chops and winning good looks will make the movie a great one. No matter how phenomenal he is as an actor, we can’t help but notice that Tom’s smile consists of a rather odd middle tooth .

Don’t believe us? Check out photos of Tom Cruise’s middle tooth!

While he has amazing pearly whites, Tom’s 100-watt grin has one tooth that’s just a bit out of place. You can see from the photo that his teeth aren’t exactly symmetrical with the center of his face. Many have noticed that the 55-year-old actor’s right front tooth is just a tad askew, and has been widely referred to as his “middle tooth” for quite a while now.

Deal of the Day

During an interview at The Mummy fan event in New York City, Tom flashed a smile showing off his pearly whites. You can tell from looking up close that his right incisor lines up with his nose. There’s a reason Tom Cruise’s smile is irresistible: his confidence.

You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.” His choice to embrace the public perception of his appearance has only driven success to his career, even now in 2018.

Many fans are also surprised to find out that Tom is actually only 5 feet 7 inches tall, which isn’t the “typical size” of someone you’d think would play Jack Reacher. In a previous interview, Tom was forced to open up about how his unconventional body type for superhero roles. “You know, [author Lee Child] created the character,” he said. “I had my own opinion that I didn’t say to Lee and then he came back and pretty much reflected what I had felt about it. But had he said ‘look I’d rather not,’ I would not have played the character.”

Smile Tom! Let’s See That Gorgeous Red Carpet Grin…

Tom Cruise Teeth: The Real Story Behind Tom Cruise’s Unique Toothy Grin plus his original teeth.

There’s not a single person in the world devoid of flaws.

Even multi-millionaire and A-list actor Tom Cruise is no exception – with his ‘former’ less than perfect smile.

But, Hollywood stars do have a huge stack of cash and a wide variety of resources at their disposal.

Think movies, endorsements, business ventures, etc.

Once they enter the world of stardom, they feel the need to “upgrade” their looks to fit in with the other stars.

Tom Cruise

A makeover, if you will.

Tom is someone most people have looked up to for his entire career .

Ever since he was young, when he first started acting way back in the 1980s, he grabbed everyone’s attention.

The effortless charms he owes in part to his good looks and innocent Tom Cruise Smile.

But let’s face it. Turns out, he didn’t always have that million-dollar smile.

Many celebs are born with imperfections in the tooth department and Cruise is one of them.

And the good news?

Well, he has plenty of money so he was able to undergo cosmetic dentistry and have all his choppers all aligned nicely.

If you want to know why he – and many other people – feel the need to do this, read on, my friend.

Here are some facts about Tom Cruise’s teeth – and a couple of photos to boot.

Let’s get started.

Tom Cruise Original Teeth

Let me set the record straight.

Tom Cruise isn’t perfect.

Yes, he was born with poor teeth alignment. The cupid’s bow of his lip shows the former asymmetry in his young smile.

Tom Cruise’s unique teeth weren’t always aligned as beautifully as the way you see him in red carpet events.

To achieve that so-called “million-dollar smile,” young Tom had to put on braces.

Tom Cruise Teeth

…and we all know how excruciating that is.

Turns out , he underwent cosmetic dentistry just like many others. For what, you may ask?

Well, you know why.

Tom Cruise’s Smile – to achieve that beautiful smile he so wanted to have – opted to undergo the procedures early in his career.

Wise choice, I reckon!

That’s why you may be shocked to see the photo above.

Well, as cliche as it may sound, we can’t always have everything.

The procedures involved whitening, bonding, fixed bridges, crowns, veneers, and dental implants. He endured all these for the sake of having that “perfect smile.”

Not to mention, it’s one pricey endeavor!

Tom Cruise Middle Tooth (Or One Strange Tooth)

Tom Cruise Teeth

What’s with your middle tooth, Tom?

One smile is all it takes to know how long – and how big – your front gnashers are.

And just like everything else that makes each human unique, your front top teeth will differ from one another.

Try smiling in front of the mirror. Does one front tooth protrude in a different direction? Does it have discoloration? If you’re a non-celeb, well, that likely won’t matter one tiny bit.

But apparently, if you’re an A-list celebrity – let alone the Tom Cruise – well, it matters…a lot!

Now, Tom Cruise has a set of choppers with the “right” color, size, and shape (at least according to his stardom’s standards).

However, it wasn’t always that way.

See that one front tooth over there?

If you take a picture of Tom and examine the center of his face closely, you’ll notice he has a big white middle tooth. Yup, there it is, front and center!

Bear in mind, though, in the celebrity world, having the best smile and fangs is essential.

…especially among singers, actors, players, models, etc.

Celebrities have to have that million-dollar smile.

That’s why most, if not all, move mountains to fix whatever needs to be fixed – tooth or not.

As unpleasant as it might seem, Tom Cruise middle tooth had always been referred to as a horrible “unitooth” or “mono-tooth.”

The actor’s good looks weren’t always complemented with perfectly-designed choppers.

There, I said it!

Tom Cruise Teeth Have Dental Veneers

When the Top Gun superstar was younger, he wanted to achieve better-looking teeth and a perfect grin with discolored teeth a thing of the past. That’s why he wore braces and dental veneers.

If you don’t know, dental veneers are thin custom-made shells used to cover the surface of the front upper teeth.

Porcelain veneers are often recommended by dentists for a good teeth makeover.

When he received porcelain veneers his damaged, disfigured, and stained choppers were now be a thing of the past in just a snap of a finger!

Tom flashed his sparkly whites for the first time at a Hollywood event after his whitening treatments.

Tom Cruise Teeth

Ha! Sounds good to me. Sign me up for that!

As you can see in the photo above, he’s already flaunting that iconic Tom Cruise ear-to-ear smile.

The smile most people have gotten to witness and love about him.

Tom Cruise’s Invisible Braces

Tom Cruise Teeth 05

No wonder they’re called “invisible braces.”

Later in his career, Tom finally decided to have his misaligned tooth set straight. He jumped onto the braces bandwagon if you couldn’t catch my drift.

In 2002, while at the premiere of his movie Minority Report , fans were shocked to find Tom Cruise with braces.

He only had them for a few months, though.

And after all, they helped him achieve that picture-perfect smile.

He had regular wires with invisible brackets to disguise his teeth alignment procedure. But, of course, every hawk-eyed fan noticed anyway.

Tom Cruise Had Invisalign Teeth Straightening Procedure

The Invisalign straightening procedure involves having removable, transparent plastic aligners.

Most celebrities choose this procedure.

Got you scratching your head too? It’s pricey, I know!

…but anything for the glitz and glamour, right?

I mean, would you want to be photographed looking unflattering?

No? I thought so too.

Sure, they’re much more expensive and much more convenient than regular wire braces. That’s the catch!

Tom Cruise Teeth

The good thing about them, though, is he can sport that stunning look in red carpet events without having to awkwardly smile for the cameras.

…something that you might do for the sake of hiding those wires.

Also, you can remove these plastic aligners anytime you feel the need to.

More Middle Tooth Evidence

Tom Cruise Teeth

A lot of people don’t believe Tom Cruise’s teeth ever underwent a makeover.

Some fanatics even go to the extent of trying to prove the claims to be lies.

First off, who on Earth has totally natural pearly white gnashers ?

If you have, well, props to you!

In most photos circulating the Internet, you can see that Tom’s teeth are bizarrely white!

Ordinary choppers can never be so white without professional help.

Other than that, they should be in tandem with someone’s complexion.

Smile! Show me those famous ‘Tom Cruise Teeth’.

A tad too white, if I may say.

Having a natural smile means having the bottom of the top front teeth equal in length.

However, in Cruise’s case, his two front teeth appear like crowns as they look much more dense compared to a normal set.

His front tooth, after being straightened, lies exactly at the center of his face.

…which is actually off!

For years and years, memes on Tom Cruise’s front tooth have circulated online, causing some “bashers” to call him out for having a “mono-tooth” or “uni-tooth.”

Yes, you read that right! Uni-tooth. Shame!

Tom, despite all his efforts, still has unaligned teeth, but that’s okay.

Others are quick to say he might have had a major upper jaw operation that resulted in a significant shift in his tooth’s alignment.

I mean, who knows, right?

While Cruise has never jumped in to comment on his dental work, this leaves us with just raw speculation.

Well, all I can say is, “Smile, Tom! Never mind the outsiders.” They’re called outsiders for a reason.

Conclusion: Tom Cruise’s Teeth: The Real Story

There you have it! Everything you need to know about Tom Cruise’s Smile and how he overcame his overbite, misalignment problems and general dental imperfection so we could see him smiling big like never before!

We’ve laid out for you the many reasons why Tom is smiling widely from one ear to the other.

Do you know of other celebs that underwent major reconstruction too?

Did they ever come close to Tom Cruise’s A-list status?

What Really Happened To Tom Cruise's Teeth?

Tom Cruise smiling

When Tom Cruise emerged in Hollywood in the '80s , he quickly became not only one of the industry's most prominent leading men but also one of the decade's most recognizable sex symbols. Apparently, Cruise took that status very seriously. Even before breaking through with 1983's "Risky Business," Cruise had always been rather conscious of how he looked in front of the camera, his old agent Eileen Berlin told the Daily Mail in February 2022. "Tommy had many faces — you see it in the photos," the retired executive said.

According to Berlin, with whom Cruise lived when he was starting out at 18, Cruise relentlessly prepared before photo sessions, in an effort to emphasize what he considered to be his strongest features. "We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror," she described. While he knew he was handsome, Cruise was self-conscious about his height . "He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit," she said.

Cruise has reportedly gone to great lengths to conceal his 5 foot, 7 inch stature, often making producers apply different techniques to make him appear as tall as his co-stars, according to Refinery29 . In light of Cruise's perceived vanity, rumors about plastic surgery and other corrective procedures has followed him throughout his career. That even includes Cruise's smile, with many contending his grin has changed over the years.

Everyone has an opinion about Tom Cruise's front teeth

Tom Cruise's smile was a big part of the boyish charm that made him so popular in the '80s and '90s. But his wasn't what most would call a perfect smile. As seen in the photo above, Cruise's front teeth aren't aligned with the center of his face, giving the impression Cruise has a "mono-tooth," as  Metro described. "The mid point between his two central upper teeth (the dental midline) did not match the midline of his face, giving him the appearance of a single prominent front tooth," said Dr. Asif Chatoo of  The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic .

Some believe the trait was less pronounced in his early career , leading experts to conjecture that Cruise has undergone upper jaw surgery, Showbiz Cheat Sheet noted. Additionally, the perceived changes in color and texture of Cruise's teeth has given way to theories he has used porcelain veneers, according to Life & Style magazine. Others have also suggested he has whitened his teeth, but, honestly, who in showbiz hasn't? It was Hollywood that popularized the practice to begin with, U.K. clinic St. Peter's Lodge  noted.

But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. "My mouth wasn't closing properly," he said (via  Time ).

Tom Cruise inspired cosmetic surgery rumors as recently as 2021

Tom Cruise's looks drew unwanted public attention in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game, Page Six reported. The "Mission Impossible" star's face looked swollen, leading many to wonder whether Cruise had had cosmetics procedures done or gained weight. Social media users took to Twitter to mock his appearance, drawing comparisons to Norm MacDonald, who had recently died . "Norm macdonald being reincarnated into tom cruise is one of his best bits ever," one wrote .

However, many others defended Cruise while criticizing the normalization of online body-shaming. "I had hoped people learnt to not comment on men's bodies after mocking Zac Efron for gaining weight and supposedly being 'ugly,' despite knowing his history of eating disorders, addiction and body image struggles," one user tweeted . "Leave Tom Cruise and his face alone. People are allowed to change."

But because Cruise had been spotted over the summer with his so-called normal face and it seemingly returned to what fans were used to shortly after, experts hypothesized the swelling could've been caused by cosmetics treatments. "Tom definitely looks swollen and puffy, which could be due to filler, post procedure swelling or weight gain," a practitioner told The U.S. Sun . Some social media users had an issue with this type of coverage, which seemed to disregard the possibility Cruise's swelling could be due to medical reasons. "He looks like he's on prednisone to me," a Twitter user pointed out, referring to the commonly prescribed corticosteroid.

Unraveling the Mystery of Tom Cruise's Teeth

From his dazzling smile to his daring stunts, Tom Cruise is an undeniably captivating figure. One aspect of his persona that has piqued the curiosity of many is his unique set of Tom Cruise teeth. What’s the story behind those pearly whites, and how have they transformed over the years? Let’s delve into this fascinating dental journey!

Tom Cruise

Key Takeaways

  • Tom Cruise’s iconic smile was caused by a sports injury!
  • His commitment to personal growth & improvement led him to wear ceramic braces at 40, resulting in his dazzling trademark asymmetrical smile.
  • Tom Cruise’s signature grin has been an integral part of his success as an actor, Wow!

The Origins of Tom Cruise's Unique Smile

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been a topic of intrigue since the beginning of his career. Young Tom’s original set of chompers were far from perfect, with misaligned and discolored teeth due to a sports injury. This less than perfect smile was on full display in his early roles, such as Steve Randle in “The Outsiders”.

The injury caused a noticeable shift in his dental midline, with his central upper teeth not aligning with the center of his face. What was the source of this peculiar misalignment?

The Impact of a Sports Injury

Sports injuries can have various exciting impacts on teeth, including:

  • Tooth fractures
  • Tooth intrusion
  • Temporomandibular joint dislocation
  • Missing tooth, which may require orthodontic treatment, especially when it involves the two central upper teeth

In Tom Cruise’s case, a flying hockey puck during a match caused him to lose a tooth on the left side, resulting in a midline shift and misaligned teeth, including Tom Cruise’s middle tooth, which has become famous.

Athletes like young Tom should take precautions such as wearing mouthguards to prevent these injuries, even if they dream of becoming Hollywood stars like Cruise in “Top Gun”. In fact, young tom voluntarily removed his mouthguard once, realizing the importance of safety in sports.

Tom Cruise's Dental Journey

Over the years, Tom Cruise underwent various dental procedures to improve his smile, including teeth whitening and alignment operations. This dental journey led to a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, making his red carpet appearance even more stunning.

One of the most notable steps in Tom Cruise’s fix journey was when he opted for braces at the age of 40. The question arises, why did he opt for braces at a relatively late age?

Ceramic Braces at 40

Tom Cruise braces

In 2002, Tom Cruise made the bold decision to wear ceramic braces to enhance his dental midline and overall smile. His braces became a topic of discussion during red carpet appearances and interviews, with the Hollywood veteran even joking about his teeth on David Letterman’s show. Tom Cruise wore the braces from January to October of the same year, proving that it’s never too late to make a change to improve one’s appearance.

While some might find it unusual to see a 40-year-old with braces, Cruise’s resolve to pursue his dental transformation showcases his dedication to personal refinement and perfection. This Tom Cruise fix had dual benefits - it corrected his dental midline and mitigated the issue of a single prominent front tooth, enabling him to present a more balanced smile for the camera. With the Tom Cruise fixed smile, he continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Analyzing Tom Cruise's Asymmetrical Smile

Despite numerous dental treatments, Tom Cruise’s smile remains asymmetrical, with his left incisor appearing larger than the right one. This unique feature adds a certain charm to his smile and sets him apart from other Hollywood stars. It’s a reminder of the fact that even the most famous actors aren’t entirely perfect.

Even though his smile lacks perfect symmetry, it has turned into an iconic trademark of Tom Cruise’s persona. His teeth, once misaligned and discolored, have been transformed into a dazzling smile that has captivated audiences for decades.

The Evolution of Tom Cruise's Teeth Through the Years

Tom Cruise’s teeth have undergone a significant transformation over the years, with noticeable improvements in color, alignment, and symmetry. From his misaligned teeth in the early 1980s to his improved grin in the early 2000s, Tom Cruise’s dental journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

The transformation of his teeth stands as a tribute to the advancements in modern dentistry and the perseverance of celebrities like Tom Cruise in upholding their image. Today, his smile is admired by fans and dental professionals alike, demonstrating how far dental treatments have come in recent decades.

Notable Moments in Tom Cruise's Dental History

Key moments in Tom Cruise’s dental journey include his natural teeth in “The Outsiders”, his ceramic braces in 2002, and his more symmetrical smile in 2016. These milestones showcase the dedication and effort it took for Tom Cruise to achieve his current smile.

It’s intriguing to ponder the influence of these dental transformations on shaping Tom Cruise’s image and in solidifying his enduring success in the acting realm. From his early days in Hollywood to his current status as an icon, Tom Cruise’s teeth have played a significant role in his journey.

Comparing Dental Solutions: Crowns vs. Veneers

Tom Cruise likely chose dental crowns over veneers due to the extent of damage to his teeth, as crowns offer more protection than veneers. Veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth, while crowns offer more protection and are better suited for cases like Cruise’s, where teeth have sustained significant damage.

Choosing crowns over veneers indicates Tom Cruise’s commitment towards not just enhancing his looks, but also preserving the health and lifespan of his teeth. His dental journey is one of both aesthetic enhancement and functional restoration, showcasing the importance of making informed choices when it comes to dental treatments.

Tom Cruise's Thoughts on His Dental Work

While Tom Cruise has never explicitly discussed his dental work, it is known that he opted for braces at the age of 40 to improve his smile. His decision to undergo various dental treatments throughout his career and his dedication to maintaining a dazzling smile demonstrate his commitment to personal growth and improvement.

Although he hasn’t vocalized about his dental journey, his actions communicate his intent more eloquently.

Alternative Dental Treatments for Tom Cruise

The consideration for alternative dental treatments, such as implants, might have been on the table for Tom Cruise. However, time constraints due to his career may have been a factor in his decision-making process. With a busy schedule and numerous film commitments, Tom Cruise needed dental solutions that would provide the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Tim Curry Didn't Know What He Was Getting Into When He Agreed To Legend

Tim Curry in Legend

Ridley Scott's "Legend" might be the closest thing we've gotten to a "Legend of Zelda" movie so far. The film came out in 1985, just a year before Nintendo's beloved fantasy-adventure video game series was created. Even so, the parallels between the two are hard to miss. Tom Cruise stars in "Legend" as Jack, a hero who has long hair and wears a green tunic. There's also a princess in the movie (" Ferris Bueller's Day Off " star Mia Sara in her screen debut) who gets kidnapped by a tall, demonic figure bent on ruling their magical homeland. See what I mean?

A critical and box office failure upon its theatrical release, "Legend" has gone on to amass a cult following. Similar to "Blade Runner," this was partly the result of a director's cut being released on DVD in 2002, with over 20 minutes of added footage and the original score by Jerry Goldsmith restored. But more than its fantastic sets and creature designs (this is a Ridley Scott film, after all), there is one aspect that everyone seems to remember above all else in the movie.

That would be Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness, a devilish being who — along with David Bowie's goblin king Jareth in "Labyrinth" — is responsible for many a young fantasy fan's sexual awakening. Unlike Bowie, however, Curry had to don layers of makeup, prosthetics, and more to bring his sinister, seductive fantasy villain to life. What he didn't know was that he would end up spending as many as eight hours a day in the makeup chair during filming, with everything from his eyes to his teeth and his entire face covered.

Big horns and long legs

According to Monsters of Makeup , Curry has already signed on for "Legend" before the design for the Lord of Darkness had been finalized. Much to his concern, he found that with each new piece of concept art, more and more of his actual face was being covered over to play the character. His attempts to avoid wearing contact lenses didn't pan out, either. When all was said and done, the Lord of Darkness was devoid of any distinctly human features, from his "cat-like orbs" to his "faun-like ears" (as the outlet described them).

The process of applying Curry's makeup and costume took eight hours a day at first, although the film's artists shaved it down to a "mere" five-and-a-half hours after a while. Of course, it wasn't just his face they were altering. His hands were also fitted with devilish nails and skin, with three-foot-long fiberglass horns strapped to the top of his head. The horns were initially too heavy and had to be reduced so as to avoid straining Curry's back. In their final form, Scott found it "weird" and "disarming" how light they actually were.

Where Curry was his regular height playing the monstrous Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the "IT" mini-series , his role in "Legend" further saw the actor wear 18-inch stilts to create the Lord of Darkness' hoofed feet. Between his stilts, horns, and his own height, it's likely Curry stood over 10 feet tall while playing the character. That's almost two Tom Cruises stacked on each other's shoulders.

Does the man or the makeup make the monster?

Curry's "Legend" getup (which, on top of everything else, includes what seems to be dark lipstick and fake fangs) was just as difficult to remove as it was to put on. Every day, after filming was finished, Curry would have to sit in a bath for an hour just to remove all the adhesives that had been applied to him face and body. He couldn't remove the makeup by force, either, as he learned the hard way after losing patience one day and trying to rip the material off, tearing up his skin in the process. Scott spent a week shooting around Curry to "calm him down" after.

In his review of "Legend," Roger Ebert praised Curry, writing that he "makes an effective Darkness; I liked his style." But Ebert also felt the actor's makeup was a little too potent, arguing, "almost any actor could be lurking inside there (only Curry's sensuous lips give him away)." I would counter that it's Curry's luscious voice and line delivery that really makes the character come alive. All the prosthetics in the world can't compare to the alluring sound of Dr. Frank-N-Furter crooning, "My dream is of eternity with you."

Tom Cruise’s Teeth: A Journey Through Dental History and Hollywood’s Influence on Dental Trends

Tom Cruise is an American actor and producer known for his action-packed roles in movies such as Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and The Last Samurai. However, the 56-year-old star is also famous for something else: his teeth. Before Cruise’s rise to fame, he had a much different set of chompers that were noticeably crooked and misaligned. In this article we’ll take a look at what Cruise’s teeth looked like before he became a Hollywood star.

Who is Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise is an American actor and producer who has been in Hollywood for nearly four decades. He has starred in some of the most iconic films of our time, such as Top Gun, Mission Impossible, and The Last Samurai. He is also well-known for his megawatt smile that lights up the screen. But before he became a Hollywood icon, Tom Cruise’s teeth were far from perfect.

Tom Cruise’s Dental History

Early dental issues.

Before Tom Cruise became a famous actor, he had a much different set of teeth. His front teeth were notably crooked and misaligned, giving him an uneven smile. He also suffered from enamel erosion due to poor dental hygiene and habits like grinding his teeth in his sleep. Finally, Tom Cruise had several cavities that went untreated for years due to a lack of access to quality dental care.

Orthodontic treatment

Once Tom Cruise made it big in Hollywood, he was able to get the dental care he needed. To fix his misaligned teeth, Cruise underwent orthodontic treatment with an experienced dentist. This included wearing braces to slowly shift his teeth into a more aesthetically pleasing position, as well as undergoing several other cosmetic procedures such as bonding and vene ers.

Tom Cruise’s Current Teeth

Teeth structure and alignment.

After completing orthodontic treatment, Tom Cruise’s teeth are now perfectly aligned and symmetrical. His upper and lower arches of teeth meet evenly, giving him a dazzling Hollywood smile. His front teeth are straight and even, with no gaps or overlaps from where his misaligned teeth used to be. The enamel erosion caused by his poor dental hygiene has also been corrected, giving his teeth a bright and glossy appearance.

Teeth color and brightness

Tom Cruise’s teeth are now a brilliant white, and his smile radiates with brightness. This is due in part to the veneers he had fitted on some of his teeth, which added a glossy coating that reflects light and gives them an extra sparkle. He also regularly undergoes professional teeth whitening treatments to keep his smile looking its best. The end result is a dazzling set of teeth that has become synonymous with Cruise’s name.

Controversies Surrounding Tom Cruise’s Teeth

Rumors about cosmetic dental procedures.

One controversy surrounding Tom Cruise’s teeth is the speculation that he has had cosmetic dental procedures done to enhance his smile. In recent years, rumors have abounded that Cruise has undergone dental veneers as well as bleaching and whitening treatments to make his teeth appear brighter and more perfect. While there is no concrete evidence of these procedures taking place, it is widely believed that Cruise has used cosmetic dentistry to perfect his smile.

Criticism over teeth size and shape

Tom Cruise’s teeth have proven to be a source of controversy for many years, with some people criticizing the size and shape of his teeth. Some fans have accused him of having his teeth artificially enlarged and reshaped to give them an overly perfect look. Others claim that the size and shape of his teeth are unnatural, making them look too big and out of proportion with the rest of his face. While these claims are difficult to prove, it is clear that Cruise’s teeth have been subject to a great deal of scrutiny over the years.

Tom Cruise’s Influence on Dental Trends

Popularity of teeth whitening.

Tom Cruise’s teeth have become an iconic symbol of perfect Hollywood smiles, and his influence has been felt in dental trends all over the world. The popularity of teeth whitening has skyrocketed in recent years, with many people striving to emulate Cruise’s dazzling smile. Professional teeth-whitening treatments are now commonplace, with dentists offering a variety of methods to help people achieve a brighter, whiter smile.

Impact on dental industry

Tom Cruise’s teeth have had a profound impact on the dental industry, in particular the trend towards cosmetic dentistry. His iconic Hollywood smile has inspired many people to seek out treatments designed to improve the aesthetics of their teeth. This has led to an increase in demand for services such as veneers, braces, and professional whitening treatments. As a result, dentists are now able to offer a wider range of services that cater to the growing desire for perfect white teeth.

Tom Cruise’s dental journey has been a long and winding road. He began with a set of misaligned and discolored teeth, and despite years of poor dental hygiene he was able to undergo orthodontic treatment to fix his bite. His upper and lower arches were then brought into perfect alignment, giving him the dazzling Hollywood smile that has become so iconic today. Cruise has also had cosmetic procedures to whiten and brighten his teeth, and many fans now strive to replicate his Hollywood look.

The Story Behind Tom Cruise’s Unique Teeth And Smile

Find out more about how Tom Cruise got his signature smile.

Tom Cruise smile

(360b / Shutterstock.com)

Tom Cruise has long enjoyed A-list Hollywood hunk status. From Top Gun to the Mission: Impossible series, he’s one of the few actors whom men want to be and women want to be with.

Perhaps that’s why he never hesitates to flash a mile-wide grin in front of cameras. However, if you’re a stickler for details, you may have noticed that Tom Cruise’s teeth aren’t exactly perfect. Experts suspect that his bright smile is a result of major dental work.

Here’s what we really know about Tom Cruise’s smile, and how he might have achieved it.

Tom Cruise’s Acting Career

Tom Cruise in Risky Business

(Warner Bros.)

In 1983, Cruise earned his breakout role in the coming-of-age film Risky Business . The film kick-started a long career as a leading man with range. Cruise could easily shift gears, playing a bad-boy heartthrob ( Top Gun ), a heartbreaking war veteran ( Born on the Fourth of July ), and a sci-fi hero ( War of the Worlds ) with equal gusto.

But his role as a super-spy Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible launched Cruise into the highest echelon of stardom. The franchise has grossed over $3.5 billion to date and is rated as the 16th highest-grossing film series of all time.

There is no question that Cruise’s good looks and charisma play a huge part in his success. Some outlets estimate that the actor has a net worth as high as $600 million . It wouldn’t be a shock to learn that he’s tweaked his appearance over the years to maintain a top spot in Hollywood’s pantheon.

What’s Up With Tom Cruise’s Teeth?

The earliest giveaway of Tom Cruise’s imperfect teeth is in the 1983 movie The Outsiders . To fit the role of working-class greaser Steve Randle, Cruise voluntarily removed a cap while filming (his front tooth had been chipped from a flying hockey puck—ouch!)

His chompers were also anything but pearly white. Check out his earliest roles in the 1980s and you’ll notice that his teeth are discolored with a yellow hue. However, it’s unlikely that Cruise turned to drugstore whitening strips to solve the problem. Dental experts believe that he had porcelain veneers applied for a fast makeover.

And who could forget Cruise’s brace-face era? At the 2002 premiere of Minority Report , the actor proudly flashed his mega-watt smile on the red carpet, revealing a set of wire-bound upper teeth. We credit him for being carefree about his efforts at self-improvement.

Tom Cruise’s Misaligned Smile

One particular flaw in Tom Cruise’s smile that people seem to obsess over is its misalignment. Look closely and you’ll notice that his teeth shift off-center. The result? The appearance of a “unitooth” that lines up dead-center with his cupid’s bow (it’s actually his right front tooth). To make matters worse, it’s significantly larger than his other front tooth, which draws attention to the asymmetry.

But braces, veneers, and caps—you name it, he’s probably done it—haven’t managed to fix this one issue. And that’s probably fine by him. As we all know, Tom Cruise’s teeth have hardly stood in the way of his fame. He’s already sealed his reputation as a Hollywood success story. We also suspect there are plenty of people who’d overlook a dental quirk to nab a date with him.

Tom cruise teeth

The accomplished American Actor, Tom Cruise has dominated the screens since the eighties. And while his talent has remained consistent throughout his career. The same can’t be said about Tom Cruise’s teeth. The multiple-times Oscar nominee had an iconic smile. And while it’s been along with his best assets, even Tom Cruise’s smile had a humble beginning.

What was wrong with Tom Cruise’s smile

Tom Cruise’ Smile wasn’t naturally perfect, in fact, it was the contrary. When Cruise first rose to fame, his teeth haven’t had all the work of cosmetic dentistry just yet.

Time Cruise’s smile was remarkably misaligned and one of his incisors was oddly prominent. His dental midline was way off-grid where his upper incisor took over it.

In addition to his misalignment, Time Cruise’s teeth were also very stained. And all in all, his smile wasn’t up to Hollywood’s standard.

How did Tom Cruise fix his teeth

To fix Tom Cruise’s teeth, the actor had to go through many years of treatment to fix his smile. To get the perfect he currently has, Tom Cruise couldn’t opt directly for the Hollywood Smile procedure. Because Tom Cruise’s teeth were severely misaligned, he had to get braces first.

Tom Cruise had braces for his teeth around the time he was 40 and reportedly opted for ceramic braces. These types of braces are usually color-matched to your teeth so they’re not very visible. But this was back in 2002, now there are modern options if you wish to have braces minus the chunky look. There’s the Invisalign as well as bilingual braces.

The braces helped get Tom Cruise’s teeth into proper alignment restoring his dental midline. Orthodontics is always the first part of treatment in cosmetic dentistry. Getting the right alignment helps pave way for additional tweaks to polish your smile. Because when your smile is straight, it’s easier to identify other construction problems and opt for the Hollywood Smile.

While many might assume Tom Cruise was too old around the time he sported braces for his teeth, adult braces are in reality very common.

As for the staining, Tom Cruise’s teeth have had whitening to give them a natural glow. But since then, the actor has upgraded his treatments wearing veneers for the ultimate smile.

The Takeaway

Tom Cruise’s teeth took on a pathway similar to his career, rising into fame and perfection. Tom Cruise fixed his teeth in the early 2000s, so the technologies weren’t half as advanced as they are now. Now not only are there more modern and convenient options, but there are affordable ways of getting cosmetic dentistry. Tom Cruise’s teeth might have cost him a fortune, but you can correct more complicated costs for a trivial sum of money. For instance, you can consider the Hollywood Smile in Turkey, and for very low costs you can receive high-quality dental treatments. Especially at the leading dentistry center in Istanbul, Dentakay.

Tom Cruise Has One of Hollywood’s Most Famous Smiles! The Story Behind His ‘Middle Tooth’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

When it comes to smiles, Tom Cruise ' s teeth might take the cake. More than three decades into his career, the action star — who has starred in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters , including Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Top Gun — is still one of the hottest stars, and it's all thanks to his impeccable acting chops and winning good looks.

But no matter how phenomenal he is as an actor, fans can't help but notice that Tom's 100-watt grin has one tooth that's just a bit out of place. In fact, you can see from photos that his teeth aren't exactly symmetrical with the center of his face. Many have noticed that Tom's right front tooth is just a tad askew and has been widely referred to as his "middle tooth" for quite a while now.

When he played Steve Randle in 1983's The Outsiders , a young Tom voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

Despite his dental imperfection, Tom has never lacked confidence. In 1985, only a couple of years after his career took off, the genetically blessed star explained why he decided to embrace his newfound sex symbol status. "It doesn't bother me at all," he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. "I mean, I don't, like, resent it. I'm not tortured at night by it. You know, I'm actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way."

Fans have never seemed to mind his unique grin. Since he was thrust into the spotlight in the early ‘80s, Tom has remained one of Hollywood’s hunkiest actors. He stepped back into his role of Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick . The action movie was a huge hit at the box office, becoming the New York native's first film to gross $1 billion worldwide, per People .

Tom-Cruise-Signature-Smile-Several-Dental-Flaws

Iconic Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has looks to die for - a stunning face and a charming smile, but the actor has overcome a major dental flaw to flaunt his now perfect smile.

The Middle Tooth

Cruise is undeniably one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors, but his good looks and contagious smile is another reason he rules the hearts of millions.

However, there is a story behind his picture-perfect smile. The actor spent years to find the right dental solution for the front tooth, perhaps popularly known as the  “middle tooth.”

Many fans have noticed that his front right tooth is a bit out of place. In fact, if you have a closer look at his old movies and portraits, the pictures speak for themselves.

In 2001, just after his breakup with Nicole Kidman, the  Mission Impossible  star got braces to address an overbite and dental misalignment.

Cruise proudly flaunted his  invisible braces  with ceramic brackets while walking the red carpet of  Minority Repor t Premiere’ in 2002. The artist’s then publicist Pat Kingsley revealed Cruise would wear an orthodontic device for a year.

Even before that, during the shooting of  The Outsiders  (1983), where he played the role of Steve Randle, the then 21-year-old Cruise removed the cap from one of the front teeth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

The Dental Imperfection Never Shook His Confidence

Despite the dental flaw, the 58-year-old never lacked conviction. During his initial days as a Hollywood hero, Cruise mentioned why he happily embraced his newly found sex symbol status.

In a 1985 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he explained that the tag neither bothered him, nor did he particularly like it.

It doesn’t bother me at all. I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.

The Transformation

The maverick actor started his career in 1982 with his genetically gifted looks and not-so-perfect smile. According to reports, he initially opted for teeth whitening for his discoloration and alignment procedures.

When he appeared at a public event in 2010 with the completely transformed look, people went head over heels for him. After completing over twenty-five years in the industry, he aced the fresh look.

By 2012, the actor had undergone a complete  dental modification.  At the 2012 premiere of  Rock of Ages , Cruise looked ever so handsome with his newly improved dentition and a fresh haircut. Later in December that year, the actor was also seen at a charity event.

However, the  Mission Impossible  star never opened up about his dental transformation. Many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers apart from braces.  Some dentists also suggested that Cruise might have an implant-supported ceramic crown in the area where he lost his tooth.

At 58, Cruise remains a fan-favorite, and the actor is known for his realistic acting skills, fantastic persona, and charismatic looks.

Tom Cruise's Teeth Are His Hallmark — Facts about the Actor's Middle Tooth and Smile Makeover

Oyin Balogun

Iconic actor Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks, which earned him the reputation of a Hollywood sex symbol. However, his teeth have had to go through years of modification to match his almost perfect good looks.

Apart from starring in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters over the last three decades — including "Top Gun" and the "Mission Impossible" franchises — Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks and his nearly perfect smile.

However, fans cannot help but notice that beneath Cruise's 100-watt grin, there is a glaring imperfection — a slightly out of place tooth that has undergone modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S TEETH BEFORE

As a newcomer in the movie world, the young Tom Cruise's teeth were badly discolored and very unaligned. By closely inspecting some of the actor's pictures, it can be seen that his teeth are not symmetrical with the center of his face.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles.

Additionally, the veteran actor's dentition features a right front tooth that is slightly askew from others. Interestingly, the front tooth has earned some fame through the years and has been dubbed the "middle tooth" by the media.

In an industry that can be described at best as "vain," and overly conscious of physical appearance, Cruise has carried on confidently with his less-than-perfect smile — even flashing it for the cameras every now and then.

Popular Los Angeles dentist Dr. William Dorfman understood the special focus on looks in Hollywood and was famous in the 90s for helping actors get their teeth in line. While speaking on Cruise's teeth, Dorfman said:

"They're terrible. His two front teeth are different sizes. They looked so bad when he was on the cover of last November's GQ that I wrote him a letter saying he should come see me."

Well, it seems Cruise must have paid a visit to the famous dentist because his teeth have undergone some modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S DENTAL TRANSFORMATION

During his early years as an actor, Cruise initially fixed his dental issues by undergoing teeth whitening and alignment procedures. The whitening helped the talented actor deal with his discolored teeth.

In 2002, after his split from his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Cruise got braces to reconfigure his misaligned teeth. The braces were nearly invisible, and at the time, his publicist Pat Kingsley revealed the 57-year-old actor would be wearing the orthodontic device for a year.

By 2012, Cruise's teeth had undergone a complete transformation, and the actor showed off his improved dentition at the premiere of "Rock of Ages," and at a charity event in December that year.

Despite the improvements, eagle-eyed fans were still able to notice that aside from his famous "middle tooth," his left incisor looked bigger than his right one.

More recently, the actor's teeth appear to be nearly perfect, much to his fans' admiration. While Cruise has never explained what he did to his teeth, many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers in addition to getting braces.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles. From Lindsay Lohan's gnarly grin to Johnny Depp's mysterious red tooth and Anna Paquin's gap-tooth, these stars pose a hefty challenge for every dentist.

However, like Tom Cruise, they have remained confident in their imperfection and have not let their unique dental features upstage their showbiz careers.

Tom Cruise’s Monotooth – The Mystery of Tom Cruise’s Weird Middle Tooth

Why does tom cruise have an extra tooth.

Tom Cruise was born with an extra tooth, which is called a supernumerary tooth. The extra tooth is located right in the middle of his two front teeth. While Tom Cruise’s monotooth may be a bit of a mystery, it’s certainly not the only one out there. In fact, there are several celebrities who have extra teeth. What Happened To Tom Cruise's Smile?

Tom Cruise’s smile was initially damaged due to an accident that left him with chipped teeth. It happened during the filming of his film “The Outsiders” in 1983. During a fight scene, Cruise was accidentally hit in the face, which resulted in his teeth being damaged.

The chipped teeth had a significant impact on Tom Cruise’s confidence and self-esteem, particularly as he was building his career in Hollywood. dental veneers treatments

Tom Cruise’s smile has always been one of his most recognisable features, but during his adolescence, he struggled with dental issues that affected the appearance of his teeth. The actor had several problems, including misaligned teeth, crowding, and a small upper arch. To correct these issues, Tom Cruise underwent orthodontic treatment, which included the use of braces to straighten his teeth and align his bite. The treatment was successful, improving the alignment of his teeth and creating a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

However, one orthodontic treatment was not enough to solve all of Tom Cruise’s dental problems. He still had a slight upper arch, which affected the proportions of his teeth and made his smile appear narrow. To correct this, he underwent maxillary expansion, a procedure that involves widening the upper arch with a special tool. The process was successful, creating a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Despite the challenges he faced in his teenage years, Tom Cruise was determined to achieve a perfect smile. His commitment to dental health and aesthetics has been a key factor in his success in Hollywood, where appearance and charisma are critical factors.

What Did Tom Cruise Do To Correct The Appearance Of His Teeth?

Tom Cruise opted for veneers to restore his damaged teeth, and the results were remarkable. His smile looked natural and aesthetically pleasing. The veneers helped him achieve a perfect smile, improve his appearance and boost his self-confidence.

Despite the initial damage to his teeth, Tom Cruise has continued to captivate audiences with his remarkable performances on the big screen. His charisma and talent have made him one of the most successful actors in Hollywood, with a net worth of over $600 million. With several blockbuster hits under his belt and a legion of fans worldwide, Tom Cruise continues to be a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry.

Does Tom Cruise Have Veneers?

dental veneers

Yes, Tom Cruise has veneers. The actor opted for veneers to fix chipped teeth that occurred during the filming of “The Outsiders” in 1983. Veneers are an overlay on the front of the teeth, which are used as a cosmetic treatment, to restore the aesthetic function of the teeth. Veneers can also improve the size, shape, and symmetry of teeth, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Tom Cruise’s veneers are designed to match the colour, shape, and size of his existing teeth, creating a natural and seamless appearance. The process of placing veneers involves grinding down the upper layer of the tooth enamel. After that, veneers are installed in the place where the tooth enamel has been ground down. The result is a durable and long-lasting solution that can significantly improve the appearance of the teeth.

Despite rumours to the contrary, Tom Cruise’s veneers do not detract from the authenticity of his smile. Many people are surprised to find out that he has veneers, as they look so natural and flawless.

Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV on July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, Cruise seemed to be drawn to physical activity and danger from an early age. In 2022, the actor recalled that when he was around 4 years old, he thought it would be a good idea to jump off the roof of his childhood home while using a sheet as a parachute. "It’s that moment when you jump off the roof and you go, ‘This is not gonna work,’” he said. “’This is terrible. I’m gonna die.’ And I hit the ground so hard. Luckily, it was wet … And I saw stars in the daytime for the first time, and I remember looking up, going, ‘This is very interesting.’”

Cruise’s mother, Mary, separated from his father, Tom Senior, in 1976, when Cruise was 14. (The actor would later allege that Senior had been abusive toward him.) The family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, and Cruise also spent some time in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he briefly considered becoming a Franciscan priest. Eventually, he rejoined his family and they settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, where he joined the varsity high school wrestling team as a junior and senior. During the 1979-1980 year, the team went 14-4-1.

The wrestling may have indirectly played a role in his career choice. After a leg injury prevented him from continuing, he decided to investigate acting and signed up for a role in a school production of Guys and Dolls . “All of a sudden, I felt like I knew what I was doing,” he said in 1983. “And I got all this attention, and it just felt right. So I came to New York. I wanted to try [acting].”

In 1981, Cruise appeared in a small role in Endless Love and as a military cadet in Taps . Two years later, he appeared in the teen sex comedy Losin’ It and the football drama All the Right Moves . Cruise also scored a role as a street punk in The Outsiders . It was during filming of The Outsiders that Cruise auditioned for Risky Business , which cast him as a preppy kid who runs amok when his parents leave town. “I told them, ‘I can't afford to tamper with my Outsiders character because I have to work tonight,’” he said in 1983. “’I can't take a shower, even.’ I was all greasy, had a chipped tooth and a tattoo, and an Okie drawl. And they cast me for this clean-cut boy.”

Risky Business was considered Cruise's true breakout role. It also made Cruise synonymous with Ray-Ban sunglasses, which he later wore to great effect in 1986’s Top Gun .

The mid- to late-1980s was a period where Cruise was able to demonstrate his dramatic chops with prestige directors in films like 1985's Legend (Ridley Scott), 1986’s The Color of Money (Martin Scorsese), 1988’s Rain Man (Barry Levinson), and 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July (Oliver Stone). In the middle of this impressive run came Cocktail (1988), a relatively lightweight drama about a bartender who relocates to Jamaica. It was “not a crowning jewel,” he told Rolling Stone in 1992. The film earned a Golden Raspberry Award, or “Razzie,” for Worst Picture, the same year that Rain Man won the Oscar for Best Picture.

Given his collaborative nature and intense interest in filmmaking, it’s somewhat surprising Cruise has yet to helm a feature film. But he has gotten behind the camera. In 1993, Cruise directed an episode of the Showtime series Fallen Angels , an anthology set largely in 1940s and 1950s Los Angeles. In the episode, titled “The Frightening Frammis,” a con man (Peter Gallagher) has the misfortune to cross paths with a femme fatale named Babe (Isabella Rosellini). The series was produced by Sydney Pollack, who had just directed Cruise in the 1993 film The Firm .

When Cruise was cast as the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview With the Vampire , the book’s author, Anne Rice, was a vocal critic, saying she preferred someone like Daniel Day-Lewis for the role. After seeing Cruise in the part, Rice changed her mind, calling him “wonderful.” Cruise had a similar experience in 2012’s Jack Reacher , where fans of the Lee Child book series found him smaller in stature compared to Child’s towering protagonist. The film did well, however, meriting  a 2016 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .

The list of movies Cruise has been offered (or at least had discussions about doing) is long, and the list of movies he’s turned down is likely even longer. Among them: Footloose , Edward Scissorhands , and The Shawshank Redemption . Director and writer Frank Darabont, who adapted the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption for the screen in 1994, said that producer Rob Reiner offered to acquire the script so he could direct and his A Few Good Men star Cruise could step into the role of Andy Dufresne. Darabont was tempted, but ultimately decided to make the movie himself. He cast Tim Robbins as Dufresne.

Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman agreed to star in director Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut , which examines the complicated marriage of a young couple tempted by forces outside their union. Kubrick ( 2001: A Space Odyssey ), a notorious perfectionist, shot the film for an astounding 15 months, far beyond the typical four- to six-month shoot of many films. Guinness World Records recognizes it as the longest continuous production in cinema history. (Interrupted shoots are a different story: Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age drama Boyhood shot for 39 days over a window spanning from 2002 to 2013.)

Eyes Wide Shut was met with a tepid reception, though it proved bountiful for Cruise. While on set, he met with director Paul Thomas Anderson, who cast him as a motivational speaker in 1999’s Magnolia . That part earned Cruise an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He had previously been nominated for Born on the Fourth of July and for Jerry Maguire (1996), though he has yet to win.

William Mapother is pictured

Cruise wasn’t the only member of his family to get into acting. His fraternal cousin, William Mapother, is also in the business and has shared several of Cruise’s film sets. Mapother was a production assistant before getting parts in Magnolia (1999) and in 2002’s Minority Report , playing a desk clerk who is threatened by Cruise’s distressed protagonist. Mapother might be best known as Ethan Rom, a character of dubious intentions on ABC’s drama Lost .

In 1996, Cruise and then-wife Nicole Kidman were aboard a yacht near Capri, Italy, when they came upon a family floating in a lifeboat whose own yacht had caught on fire. They climbed aboard Cruise’s vessel until the Coast Guard arrived.

A decade prior, it was Cruise himself who needed a hand. While filming Top Gun , he was dragged underwater by parachute lines. According to United Press International, Navy swim school instructors rushed to pull him out.

Shooting The Last Samurai with Cruise in 2003, director Ed Zwick was surprised to see several A-list directors dropping by the set to see Cruise. When the actor learned that David Fincher ( Fight Club ), Cameron Crowe (who directed Cruise in Jerry Maguire ), and others posed for a group photo with Zwick while he was busy, he asked that he be retroactively placed in the image.

To work with Tom Cruise is to risk being sent a cake every holiday for the rest of your life. (Or his.) Each year, the actor orders white chocolate coconut Bundt cakes from Doan’s Bakery in Los Angeles and has them sent to a list of recipients, including former co-stars. According to former talk show host James Corden, Cruise himself has never tried the cake. (Other stories, however, have him tasting it as part of a “cake-off” while Cruise’s then-wife Katie Holmes and Diane Keaton were making a film together in 2008. The cake was reportedly Keaton’s favorite.)

Tom Cruise showed off his beaming smile and perfect pearly whites as he posed at the Producers Guild Awards in LA on Monday night.

But the A-list movie star, now 60, hasn't always had the best smile - sporting crooked teeth in his younger years before getting them fixed.

Images from his time on the 80s movie The Outsiders showed his far from straight gnashers before having a dental work done.

But over the years he has made sure to curate an impeccable grin to make him film star and red carpet ready.

Here MailOnline takes a look at the transformation of his teeth over the years...

Tom Cruise was just 20 and started his acting career in the early 1980s.

Back then like many young people his teeth were misaligned and were also discoloured.

According to Heightline, Tom initially fixed this issue with teeth whitening and alignment procedures.

His teeth are also not symmetrical with the centre of his face which is something you can still notice when you look at snaps of him now.

In addition, when he played Steve Randle in 1983's The Outsiders, a young Tom voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

As The Outsiders called for Cruise to portray a streetwise brawler, the actor felt that revealing his teeth in their natural state would be fitting for the character.

In the film we see his real teeth, with one brown, dead tooth prominently on display in the middle of his mouth.

The cap came straight back over Cruise's teeth in his subsequent movies, and with blockbusters like Risky Business, Top Gun and Cocktail.

Then after his split from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the Hollywood veteran got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems.

He proudly showed them off while walking the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report. He had just turned 40 at the time.

To the surprise of many the actor arrived on the red carpet and interview circuit wearing his visible silver dental brace.

Cruise said at the time that it was to correct his overbite.

Cruise joked to David Letterman, 'I couldn't close my mouth properly for years, so they finally said, 'please, shut your mouth.''

The actor explained he'd taken his children to a dentist to have their teeth checked out, but to his surprise the dentist instead told Cruise that he could benefit from braces.

He wore the brace starting in January 2002 until the October of that year before beginning work on his film at the time - The Last Samurai.

It was a significant difference from 25 years ago when he appeared in The Outsiders, where he had the cap removed from the front of his teeth.

From swoon-worthy Top Gun star to THAT puffy face - and now a deep tan and flowing locks: A look at Tom Cruise's changing appearance

Tom Cruise debuted a bold new look at the 95th Annual Oscars Nominees Luncheon this week, marking his first red carpet appearance in eight months.

The Top Gun: Maverick star, 60, was there to support the 2022 blockbuster summer film that has received several Oscar nominations, including Best Picture.

The actor sported much longer hair and a deep tan as he dressed to impress in a navy blue suit with a matching waistcoat and white shirt.

As one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors, Tom's career in front of the camera has spanned over four decades.

After making his breakthrough with roles in Risky Business (1983) and Top Gun (1986), he became a leading actor in the nineties with roles in The Firm (199) and Jerry Maguire (1996).

1980S - THE EARLY YEARS

Tom was a fresh-faced 24-year-old when he appeared in one of his most famous films: Top Gun.

The actor won the lead role of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the action flick, which became the highest-grossing domestic film of the year with $357million.

The star looked worlds away from his current self during this period, which also saw him appear in films like The Color Of Money (1986) and All The Right Moves (1983).

Tom spoke about his rise to fame during this time, saying it was strange being suddenly recognised in the street.

He told Interview magazine: 'I'm really very private, in my own world. Suddenly I was someone walking on the street and people were looking at me and I was thinking, "Jesus, is something hanging out of my nose?"

'It took time to get adjusted to it. It was such a perfect time to do Legend in England. Everyone is looking at you and somehow just moving your hand seems so much more exaggerated.

TURN OF THE MILLENIUM - MOVIE STAR

Tom was firmly established as one of the industry's biggest stars by this time and had a chiselled look to match.

The star looked like a male model when he attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards that year where he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role in Magnolia.

Tom also sported a longer hairstyle during this period, just months before the end of his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.

This was also the year the Mission: Impossible franchise kicked off in earnest with the release of the first sequel which made over $500million at the box office.

MID-NOUGHTIES - CONTINUED SUCCESS

Tom had gone with a bolder look a few years later, sporting a much shorter crew cut that he would keep for several years.

This decade was one of the busiest for Tom when he apeared in a slew of successful films including The Last Samurai, Collateral, and War of the Worlds.

He was also gearing up for a return to the Mission: Impossible franchise, with the third instalment released two years later.

Tom would soon embark on one of his most highly publicised relationships when he began dating actress Katie Holmes in Apirl 2005.

Just a few months later in October, the couple announced they were expecting their first child, Suri, who was born in April 2006.

They married in November of that year, with Katie filing for divorce five and a half years later.

2021 - TOM'S PUFFY APPPEARANCE RAISES EYEBROWS

Tom raised eyebrows in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game in San Francisco with a noticeably puffier face.

The father-of-three sparked speculation he had fillers after sporting a fuller face during the LA  Dodgers match.

Dawn Attewell, Registered Aesthetics Nurse at therapyhouse.co.uk told FEMAIL the pictures were a result of 'excessive filler' and 'post-procedure swelling' but he now looks fresher thanks to a 'hair transplant' and 'skin tightening treatments'.

'In the infamous October 2021 picture, you can see that Tom looked swollen and puffy, which could be due to excessive filler, post-procedure swelling, or weight gain.'

'Often, surgical procedures such as a platysmal plasty, or neck lift, combined with a mid-facelift could create this type of swelling in these areas.

However, it wasn't long before Tom was back to his old self as he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022 with a slimmed down appearance.

PRESENT DAY

Tom returned to the spotlight last year with his first film in four years, To Gun: Maverick.

The fim made over $1billion at the box office - the higest grossing film of is career - and many critics considered it to be an improvement over the original.

Tom is once again sporting longer locks and has been busy in recent months putting the finishing touches on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning parts one and two.

Part one is due for release in July while franchise fans will have to wait until June 2024 for part two.

Tony Khan Draws Comparisons Between Wrestling Legend Sting and Actor Tom Cruise

I n an intriguing meld of worlds involving professional wrestling and Hollywood fame, Sting has been likened to no less a figure than box-office star Tom Cruise.

Tony Khan, President of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), shared his thoughts on the legendary wrestler’s career during his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show . He drew parallels between Sting’s remarkable run in wrestling and Cruise’s recent surge in cinematic stunts despite both being in their 60s.

Reflecting on AEW Revolution and Sting’s retirement, Khan said, “I’ve had some great nights in wrestling, but the best might have been earlier this year in 2024, witnessing Sting’s last match. To me, Sting in AEW has been much like Tom Cruise’s incredible performance in recent movies. Everyone who’s seen a film knows Cruise, and if you’ve watched wrestling, you definitely know of Sting.”

Remarkable Five Years: Undertakings of Sting and Tom Cruise

“Both have managed to keep a resemblance to their younger selves over the years. What’s astonishing is their decision to perform wild stunts now in their 60s — something they didn’t much attempt when younger. In fact, the stunts they’ve done in the last five years might just overshadow the ones from the previous 25.”

Khan continued to praise Sting for his contribution to AEW, highlighting the iconic wrestler’s final match and strong relationships backstage, “Sting’s farewell at Revolution, where he teamed with Darby Allin against The Young Bucks, was memorable. He closed his AEW chapter undefeated, a testament to both his skill and the esteem he’s held in by fellow wrestlers and fans.”
