Royal de Luxe comes to Nantes and Saint-Herblain in September 2023

Royal de Luxe have confirmed that the giant dogs Xolo and Bull Machin will be returning in 2023 to the streets of Nantes and Saint-Herblain on the fourth weekend of September, the 22nd – 24th 2023.

An announcement was made on January 5, 2023, by the mayor of Nantes, that the Royal de Luxe troup will be putting on their popular giant puppet show in the streets of Nantes and Saint-Herblain after the Summer in 2023. Now Royal de Luxe themselves have confirmed that the puppets will be there.

Fresh from their appearance in Villeurbanne in 2022, we can expect to see the giant dogs ‘Bull Machin’ and ‘Xolo’ wandering around the streets of Nantes in the free performance.

Royal de Luxe’s Weekend in Villeurbanne

From 23 to 25 September 2022, we were treated to faithful company dog Xolo and new arrival Bull Machin shuffling around the streets, taking toilet breaks, snacking, napping, and for Bull Machin, a few sneaky cigar breaks.

The performance was ended with a race held on Sunday between the two hounds.

Travelling to Nantes

The closest airport to Nantes is Nantes Atlantique Airport (NTE). From there, you can catch a shuttle bus from the airport to the railway station or the city centre. They leave every 20-30 minutes and it’s a 20-minute journey between the railway station and the airport. It costs €9 for a one-way ticket.

Buying Nantes public transport (tram/bus) tickets

You can purchase a Tan ticket from self-service ticket machines at tram and bus stations for either one hour (€1.70) or for 24 hours (€6). Authorise them the first time you board a tram or bus, and show it to the driver if you transfer. Children under 6 travel for free.

Staying in Nantes

The Bouffay district , or the historical district in Nantes is very lively, and a great place to stay if you like being in the heart of things. You’ll be near to most of the city’s main monuments such as the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Nantes (Cathedral of Saint Peter and Saint Paul), the Château des ducs de Bretagne (Castle of the Dukes of Brittany) and the Jardin des Plantes , plus there are plenty of markets to stroll around in.

It’s now been confirmed that the giants can be seen in Nantes on the 4th weekend of September 2023, 22nd-24th. But I don’t believe the little giant girl is making an appearance, it’s likely to be a repeat of the performance in 2022 with Xolo and the Bulldog.

It’s now been confirmed that the giants can be seen in Nantes on the 4th weekend of September 2023, 22nd-24th.

I want very much to see the giant marionettes and would schedule a flight from the US.

When and where will that be in 2023?

The giants of the Royal de Luxe troup will be in Antwerp from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 August, but there is no confirmation yet on when they’ll be in Nantes.

I would like to see the giants in Antwerp August 2023 but do I need to book tickets? What is the route they will take and where would I book suitable accommodation? I can’t seem to find out details n their site.

Unfortunately it’s a huge secret which Giants will come to Antwerp in 2023, and there are no details on the route yet either. But keep an eye on my blog here which I’ll update as soon as I know more. You don’t need to book any tickets; it’s a public event. As for where to stay, the historical city centre is ideal, or for something a bit quieter, the Little Island/Het Eilandje is popular.

Have these puppets ever come to Canada? Is there possibly an international tour dates sometime soon?

The Giants actually came to Montreal in 2017, but as for if they’re travelling to Canada again sometime soon, I’m afraid there’s no news on that. Stay tuned to the blog however, as I’ll be sure to add a post as soon as there is any announcements!

There’s no news currently on where the giants will be appearing in 2024, but I will be keeping an eye on it and will post as soon as I know anything!

What puppets will there be in Nantes-St Herblain the 22nd to 24th September 2023 please?

It’s been confirmed that it will be the two giant dogs, Xolo and Bull Machin.

Is is possible to see the puppets at the end of October, is there a permanent exhibition in Nantes that one can visit?

Unfortunately not, the puppets aren’t permanently displayed anywhere, they are paraded only on the dates and in the locations advertised.

Royal De Luxe show in September 2023

• Major event

Nearly 30 years after their very first Giant appeared, street theatre company Royal de Luxe will be presenting a new performance in which two Dogs will be roaming the city’s streets, squares, and boulevards for 3 days, to put on a show you won’t forget!

During the first two days of their city exploration, the two dogs wake up, smell each other, prepare themselves, breathe in the asphalt like two conquerors ready to run after their craziest dreams. Each animal writes its own story. They’re so different. To the grace of the first one answers the strength of the second. The crowd waits, the pressure grows, each character will get ready according to their own methods, rites, and liturgy. The two Dogs go through intensive training. It constitutes in several trials testing their agility, speed and strength. The Bull Machin must pull Egyptian-style a bus put on its side on pine logs following the rhythm given by a drummer while the Xolo must travel a given distance loaded down like a mule with all sorts of objects and ridden by a princess straight out of the Arabian Nights tales.

Fortunately, our Dogs can enjoy some moments of respite and relaxation that allows them to recharge: for the Xolo, manicure with a grinder, hair do, play time with a scooter or a teddy bear, and for the Bull Machin, cigar break, relieve his thirst thanks to his giant bowl without forgetting to spit on a laughing audience. Then they each get a snack before going back to their own kennel, one under its parasol, surrounded by an ice wall and the other on a knob made of tire.

The crowd can sense the D-day approaching. This most anticipated day is the one of the race. Of the battle between the Xolo and the Bull Machin during the Grand Prix, with their colorful jerseys.

Throughout this unique race of more than 1 km, several key moments are filled with difficulties, with even a dangerous turn to spice it up! The two champions are galvanized by two eccentric comedians analyzing the race live.

Full speed departure. The departure is checked by the race director, who’s a bit strange and day-dreaming, and then at the gunshot from the Giant revolver, an army of Lilliputians, wearing red for the Bull Machin and blue for the Xolo sets off to ride their Dog’s machine, along the cheers of the crowd. No titleholder, as during the last race in Villeurbanne, the two rivals were tied.

During the race. The two Dogs attack, counter-attack, the Lilliputians break but saddle right back up, adopting different strategies. One can be the victim of an accident, which can force them make a pit stop for a change of paw, and end the race with a prosthesis, fitted in record time by a mechanics battalion! Antidoping controls, food and water stops, and signings of lap count sheet give rhythm to this frantic race. The weather – rain or high temperatures as well as the ground type can disturb the race, creating an additional obstacle. Everything is there, and it is then magic, the Lilliputians are full of courage, abnegation, wanting to suffer while rejecting pain, wishing to win, pride to finish, tears are starting to blurry eyes, rivalries, camaraderie, acceleration, braking, acceleration… The finish line, absolute triumph. After a magnificent battle and crossing the finish line, the two Dogs meet again on a big scene for the prize ceremony, a dinosaur bone! And ready to start on other circuits, other macadams around the world…

Funky guitar plus Congo drums plus quirky lyrics equals one of the most fun shows you could possible ever attend, all thanks to the band Deluxe. The collective quirky-ness of each member is a reflected into the music, resulting in a dance your pants off good time.

The stage is setup so that when the show starts; you can’t actually see the stage, just the curtain behind all the instruments. You hear the first notes being played for “My Game,” then a spotlight goes on to focus solely on the funky guitar that starts up the song. Then another spotlight goes on when the Congos start to be played, leading up to the last spotlight for the vocals. As they reach the height right before the chorus the whole stage lights up behind them with red flashing lights. Epic. Amazing that that’s just the beginning of the show. They continue to give high energy, so much so that you feel like the music completely takes over you, and no matter how good or bad, you start to dance and let it flow through you. Their between song conversation with each other and the audience just reinforces how great of a time they have making music together.

Amazing energetic show! I wasn't a fan, but fall in love with the band after their performance in Amsterdam. And the club was sooo crowded with other Deluxe lovers. They play good live fank music and their Liliboy rap singer is also very impressive. Highly recommend.

On a dansé (beaucoup), sauté (beaucoup), chanté et crié (encore plus !).

Probablement le meilleur concert auquel j'ai assisté. Non : sûrement.

ABOUT ICE SPICE ​​With a sugar rush of playful sensuality and unbothered cool, Ice Spice has established herself as the music world’s latest shapeshifting superstar. After initially releasing the song and its follow-up, “Bikini Bottom,” she signed a deal with Capitol Records and 10k Projects. Luke Combs’ chart-conquering “Hurricane,” a stormy torch song about a love the narrator just can’t quit, heralded the 2016 arrival of a towering new voice in country music. Combs’ North Carolina-tinged vocals—a combination of grit and soul as suited to intimate moments as arena-rocking grandeur—were something of a revelation in Music City; he clearly had the range. By the time his debut album, 2017’s This One’s for You, made good on the promise of “Hurricane,” Combs had just turned 27. His gruff voice and deft songwriting hand provided evidence that he was an industry-shaking talent. When Combs moved to Nashville in 2014, he made a point of working with untested names, like Ray Fulcher, with the intent of just writing songs that Southern boys like themselves would like to hear. He shows his age on songs like the rollicking drinking anthem “Beer Can” and the album’s second single “When It Rains It Pours,” a triumphant tale of a dumped slacker who hits an unbelievable “redneck roll” of good fortune. But even on his first album, it was clear Combs contains multitudes. “When It Rains It Pours” leads directly into the title track, a moving ode to the friends, family, and fans who supported him on his path to country stardom. On the earthy “I Got Away With You,” Combs sincerely compares his luck in love with pulling off a heist of the Crown Jewels. He turns the mood around again with “Honky Tonk Highway,” a roadhouse banger that recalls the punchy classics of Brooks & Dunn. Shuttling between these vibes sets the tone for Combs’ career, identifying him as an authentic presence in Nashville, a sensitive and down-to-earth balladeer who can also turn up and rock out. The 2018 deluxe reissue, dubbed This One’s for You Too, adds five tracks to the original that largely flesh out Combs’ sensitive side, with songs like the sweet “Beautiful Crazy” and heartbroken “She Got the Best of Me” paving the album’s way to going multiple times Platinum.

Luke Combs’ rough-around-the-edges brand of country music provides a welcome foil to Music City’s polished radio fare, mixing versatile songwriting with hard-rock dynamics while always staying true to the genre’s established values. While new artists usually get a cold reception from country radio, Combs (born in 1990 and raised in North Carolina) barged right through any obstacles. His 2016 debut single, “Hurricane,” went to No. 1. The following year, his second single, “When It Rains It Pours,” went to No. 1. By 2019, Combs was the first country artist in history whose first seven singles went to No. 1—a streak he extended to a lucky 13—and he was soon headlining arenas. It seemed like overnight success, but it wasn’t. Combs molded his signature sound—a bold, yearning tenor, Southern rock guitars, hip-hop-imbued beats—and released three independent EPs before a major label signed him. It doesn’t hurt that he has an Everyman appeal, looking, he’s said, not like a star but like a typical country fan. In a sea of styled and coiffed Nashville stars, Combs' unkempt manner is a statement of rural masculinity. That attitude is reflected in his thick, raucous sound, but he’s also a diverse songwriter who covers a lot of ground: rowdy and loose, sweet and devoted, funny, and sentimental. Case in point is the faithful and impassioned 2023 rendition of Tracy Chapman’s classic 1988 track “Fast Car”—Combs’ self-proclaimed favorite song—from his fourth record, Gettin’ Old. In the ’90s, Garth Brooks gave country music the scope of arena rock; Combs has taken up that mantle, shaping it anew for his own generation while keeping the roots of tradition intact.

Her 'SOS' surpassed astronomical expectations to make chart history. As she gears up to release a deluxe edition and headline arenas, she's finally internalizing "that I'm good enough."

In the five years that followed SZA ’s culture-shifting 2017 debut album, Ctrl , the pressure to deliver another ambitious, eclectic project reached a boiling point. Yet somehow, she managed to cut through the noise, surpassing the astronomically high expectations set by Ctrl with her much anticipated follow-up.

SZA’s ‘SOS’ Has Most Weeks at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Among Albums by Women in Seven Years

“Right now, I just have extreme gratitude because I swear to God, I never thought I’d be No. 1 for even a week, let alone seven,” the 33-year-old artist born Solána Imani Rowe tells Billboard in early February as she cruises along the Pacific Coast Highway — a brief moment of reprieve before she really hits the road this spring for her first-ever arena tour.

While the industry and public alike overwhelmingly share Henderson’s sentiment, Billboard ’s 2023 Woman of the Year remains prone to self-doubt. Thoughts like “Do I deserve this?” and “I wish I did better” frequently creep into her mind, and she’s working on quieting them. She has already released new music since SOS dropped, by way of her February appearance on the remix of Lizzo’s 2022 song “Special.”

“Manifestation is real,” Lizzo tells Billboard . “I declare 2023 the year of SZA. But SZA has been Woman of the Year for me for at least a decade. I’m always such a fan of her music, a fan of her artistry, but I really love her as a friend. Solána Imani Rowe, you will always be ‘the one.’ ”

And, once she releases the deluxe edition of SOS — which will feature 10 additional tracks and is coming soon — SZA says she’ll be done trying to convince herself that she deserves her flowers.

“I guess I need to stop trying to figure out what it means,” SZA admits, “and start realizing and living in what it is.”

How did you feel after SOS was released? Did you have any hesitations about its reception?

It’s hard making music as a Black woman [because] we don’t get the luxury to try something and have it be something that’s genuinely part of us. You have to allow people to get to know different parts of you. Some people may really f–king hate that, and some people might enjoy it. And I’m grateful for those who enjoy it.

Were you surprised that “Kill Bill” — which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 to become your highest-charting song to date — was the SOS song that took off?

I knew it would be something that pissed me off. It’s always a song that I don’t give a f–k about that’s just super easy, not the sh-t that I put so much heart and energy into. “Kill Bill” was super easy — one take, one night.

The chart success of SOS has put you in the same conversation as pop superstars. Is it important for you to be recognized outside of the R&B space?

To even be in the conversation with Taylor [Swift] and Miley [Cyrus], even the fact that our fans are fighting, is ridiculous because it’s like, “How?!” I just really appreciate the opportunity to be in that conversation at all. It’s something I never dreamed of.

What are your thoughts about your upcoming first-ever arena tour and performing this album in front of your fans?

It’s interesting because my other shows were intimate, and I felt like people were really coming to see me . But I know certain people are just coming to see what the hype is about, and that makes me nervous. But I just want to put on the best show that expresses my theatrical side.

How do you tour an emotionally intense album like SOS ? Do you insulate yourself from the material, or does it inevitably dredge up emotions?

I never know. When I was performing “20 Something” before my grandma died, it didn’t hit me the same. And then after my grandma died, I could barely get through it at rehearsal. Who knows what any of these songs will bring up for me in real life? Shooting the video for “Nobody Gets Me” was really f–king sad. I cried a lot. I’m just going to wing it and see.

What does it mean for you to be Billboard ’s Woman of the Year? It really scares me. But I really want to do something with my time in the sun right now. There’s so much I want to do for other people. I need to do something to deserve that in a way that has nothing to do with me, something that’s selfless and uplifts other women, people, period. It makes me feel more responsible than I was before. I feel like I owe everyone so much more than just smiling and getting onstage and waving. Part of it I know is just letting God use me and be myself and letting that be part of the work. But I know that there’s something more that I have to do.

You were the first woman signed to TDE in 2013. How did you manage to maneuver through the male-dominated label for nearly a decade on your own?

I didn’t mind the lack of female artists. I just felt like I was always the first to do something, and that was frustrating. It was me telling y’all I need hair and makeup because I’m super hands-on, on top of being a woman. I’m making PowerPoints trying to explain why I want to be in this type of publication versus that type of publication.

Who are some women in the music industry whom you look up to?

There’s nobody in the industry that f–ks with me and that I f–k with the way that Lizzo f–ks with me and the way I f–k with her. She never made me feel like because I don’t have a No. 1 song or I [previously] didn’t have a No. 1 album that I wasn’t capable. She’d been telling me that she thought I was the one for years. The way that she thinks of me so highly as a human being and as an artist means so much to me. I just have never met anybody like her in this entire industry.

There’s a lot of women I look up to in general that I don’t know personally, but watching them is incredible. Beyoncé, but who doesn’t look up to Beyoncé? I love Jozzy’s and Starrah’s energy. I love the way Nija is from New Jersey and has been able to transmute her energy from being a writer to an artist. Kehlani’s hella effervescent, and you can just feel the energy when she’s performing. I love Chloe Bailey and her commitment to perfection — I feel like she’s going to be a legend. Even Taylor letting that whole situation go with her masters and then selling all of those f–king records. That’s the biggest “f–k you” to the establishment I’ve ever seen in my life, and I deeply applaud that sh-t.

What does the future look like for SZA?

After I do the deluxe, I’m hoping to be able to accept that this chapter is done. I’m looking forward to actually feeling proud of myself and not just smiling and nodding at accolades but really feeling it internally and knowing that I’m good enough.
