So, you’re interested in finding the best street hockey goalie pads ?

Welcome. We’re Goalie Coaches. Unapologetically, we are one of the most trusted companies in hockey goalie training. We’ve trained goalies at every level of play, including the National Hockey League. When it comes to overall knowledge of the position of goaltending and everything that comes with it, we’d like to think we are well versed on the subject.

We care about one thing and one thing only, introducing our passion for the position of goaltending to everybody that shows an interest. So, if you son or daughter is interested in getting between the pipes on the street, we’re interested in encouraging that.

And then, hopefully, when the season comes around, we can get them on the ice and mold them into the goaltender they dream of becoming.

So, let’s jump into this.

The main issue with finding a top quality set of street hockey gear is, you’re spending money on a pad that you’re going to destroy. Long ago, we grew up on the streets using beat up goalie pads as our street hockey gear to stop tennis balls slapped around by friends.

Today, street hockey has changed. Many of the world’s top goalie gear manufacturers make specific lines just for street hockey. With that being said, however, many of these companies make what we call “roller gear”.

These are the top two pairs of street hockey goalie pads that we’d recommend.

  • Winwell Street Goalie Pads

Bauer Street Hockey Goalie Pads

Top street hockey goalie pads .

Street hockey goalie gear, specifically, is built to be low budget in nature. The entire setup shouldn’t cost you more than $250, and if it is, it’s probably too nice to be using on an asphalt street. One thing however, that we should clear up is that these are not roller hockey pads. While you can use street goalie pads with roller blades, goalies that play competitive roller hockey should probably consider something from our regular goalie pads guide .

Keep these things in mind when it comes to street hockey pads for goalies

  • Low quality – the gear is not built anywhere remotely close to that of a real goalie pad. We have a youth goalie pads and a regular goalie pads guide for real gear. This stuff will probably tear in a couple years (or maybe even year one), it’s for messing around in the driveway, or for the grandkids. Some of my best memories are playing street hockey, so when an old beat up set laying around the house won’t work, pads specifically built for street hockey are built using some of the lightest foam there is, obviously, for cost reducing purposes
  • Light – this stuff is extra light. Almost weightless. That means, it’s also low on protection. Most manufacturers recommend the use of a ball with street hockey equipment, no pucks!

Now at the risk of sounding negative, I want to make one thing clear. Street hockey goalie pads are not real goalie pads. They’re real, yes, in the sense that they are pads, but they’re not built for use with anything except a ball. I know you know that, but I want to set the record straight. These are great pads for the driveway, but that’s about it.

Winnwell Street Goalie Pads

tour hockey goalie pads

As far as street hockey specific pads go, these Winnwell Pads are the best ones on the market. I say this because they’ve got the most choices for both youth and adult goalies.

You wouldn’t go out and take your brand new gear on the street, so don’t. Buy something cheap, beat it up and save your nice gear for the rink.

These pads are made of one piece of foam and feature an adjustable knee cradle.

As far as specs are concerned, street hockey gear for goalies is basic. As basic as it gets. The foam isn’t anything special, it’s not overly protective, and it’s definitely not made for use on ice.

Check prices of Winnwell goalie pads at Goalie Monkey

tour hockey goalie pads

They’re on the budget end of things, and they’ve got sizing for both younger goalies as well as adults.

Does design make the gear worth the investment? Well, when it comes to true street hockey gear, it absolutely does.

These pads come in a number of different sizes, so make sure you select the right size at checkout.

  • Junior 24″
  • Junior 27″
  • Senior 32″

If you’re looking for adult street hockey pads, I’d recommend the Winnwell series we listed above, as they do come in more sizes than the Bauer option here has, but these ones at 32″ should work for goalies up to 6 feet tall. Please don’t take that as advice for pads used for ice, as 32″ won’t work for a 6 foot goalie on the ice (knee cradles will be way off)

Buy them at Pure Goalie

CCM Fleury Street Hockey Pads

tour hockey goalie pads

Price-wise, they’re cheaper than the Bauer by about twenty bucks, which is a sweet bonus.

Unfortunately, these are not offered at Goalie Monkey. I’m pretty positive that they quit making them, so honestly, I’d just stick with the Winnwell

Bauer 2 Street Hockey Goalie Pads

Looking for a different color option for street hockey pads? These Bauer are a black-based design built specifically for youth and junior sizes, which is a nice bonus.

Shop Bauer street hockey pads on puregoalie.

Is there a difference between roller hockey goalie pads and street hockey goalie pads?

The difference is, for roller hockey, regular goalie pads are modified using a specific sliding strip to make the gear slide better during roller hockey play. Street hockey goalie gear is lower quality and much more affordable.

Pro ambitions at the prague hockey cup, august 2018.

Pro Ambitions Hockey competed in the Czech Hockey Challenge Cup (CHCC) for the sixth time in August 2019. The competition was excellent and included teams from Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Latvia, Sweden, France and Canada. We are excited to return this summer with six Pro Ambitions Seal Teams. The 2022 CHCC will take place from August 8-August 14 in Prague, Czech Republic and will consist of one exhibition game before the tournament begins as well as five guaranteed games (15 minute stop time periods). Pro Ambitions will be fielding teams at the 2005/2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 levels for this year’s tournament. In addition to the hockey, all players, parents and guests participate in several scheduled events and sightseeing tours throughout the beautiful city of Prague. The official Tournament Party is one of the highlights of the trip and includes a catered dinner and refreshments. A tour of a Crystal Factory and a Dinner Cruise on the Vltava River gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy the culture of the Czech Republic. There is ample time every day for anyone who wants to shop or sightsee on their own. Two meals are included daily and games are normally completed no later than 5:00pm which leaves plenty of time every day to enjoy Prague with your family and friends.

Prague guided city tour and the following excursions crystal factory, castle, river dinner cruise with all of The Pro Ambitions Teams, Concentration Camp (very emotional excursion). Awesome city to explore on your own as well. One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, hands down. Practice Aug. 8 before tourney starts. Prague Hockey Cup staff during the stay are at your disposal for questions. Rinks are conveniently located around the city, all within 10-30 minute drive. Tournament Jerseys/Socks/custom sublimated by Pro Ambitions and sponsored by Bauer. Tournament Bauer jackets and other swag available for purchase prior to trip Your gear will be mailed to you be careful in ordering proper size for tournament uniforms, more on this if you join us. All local taxes. Book your flights to arrive in Prague to join us at The Hilton on Aug 8 meaning your will be departing the USA on Aug 7 on an overnight flight of your choice. We have lowered the price to allow folks to purchase their own flights because we have found it preferred after analyzing the pros and cons of traveling as a group. There was not a savings for families and it is easier for them to chose their own travel. The hotel is 15 minutes from Prague airport, a short and inexpensive taxi ride. The competition is amazing. You will be playing teams from Russia, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ireland, Canada, UK, Slovakia, Germany and more. We have 6 professional coaches. Jeff Serowik, Founder of Pro Ambitions will be coaching a team again this year. Billy Jaffe, NHL analyst, will be coaching a team for the third year in a row. Larry Rooney (Catholic Memorial Coach, Providence College, Buffalo Sabres 3rd Round), Henry Berger (4th year professional, Director of Operations Pro Ambitions), Jay Kenny (10 year professional) and Derek Britner (UMASS Dartmouth Captain and Graduate). All of our coaches have a very extensive coaching resume and are fantastic with the kids. You will have a very personal experience with your coach and team. Each team has its own schedule of games and practices and excursions. Each team has their own coach bus and personal tour guide for the week. There are many times we convene as a group, especially “ happy hour” in the hotel daily with all of the parents… All players must have at least one parent or guardian travel with them, most families brought whole family

Q and A Very helpful information about the Tourney and Experience…

  • How do I sign up to play for one of your teams?

You email Jeff Serowik ( [email protected] ) TODAY.  Jeff will help guide you through the process.

  • Who will we be playing?

Teams from all over Europe: Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, United Kingdom, Ireland, Latvia, The Czech Republic and more.

  • Can my son or daughter attend without a parent?

No. Each player must have one parent or guardian accompany them. Most players last summer brought their entire family. We welcome that and plan for all of them.

  • Where will we stay?

All of our teams will stay together at The Hilton Prague. Located right on the river. Last year we realized which hotel would be best for our group. We as Americans want a full American breakfast, strong air conditioned rooms, ICE in our drinks are a few things to name a few that were a challenge at the historic hotel we chose last year. We know everyone will love The Hilton Prague.

  • Who coaches our teams?

You have a very personal experience with your coach and team. Each team has its own schedule of games and practices and excursions. Each team has their own coach bus and personal tour guide for the week. There are many times we convene as a group, especially “ happy hour” in the hotel daily with all of the parents…

  • The week is carefully well planned. How does it work?

Every team has a detailed daily schedule. It is extremely organized. Every team will have a daily game. We utilize three different rinks around Prague. Each team will have an excursion and game daily, again at different times. Breakfast and Happy Hour in the late afternoon is a time when you will see parents and coaches and players and parents from all of the teams back at the hotel but during the day each team was off in a different direction with their parent or family.

  • What are the excursions in Prague?

-Dinner and cocktail river cruise. This is awesome. -Terezin Holocaust Concentration camp. Theresienstadt concentration camp, also referred to asTheresienstadt ghetto, was a concentration camp established by the SS during World War II in the garrison cityof Terezín (German: Theresienstadt), located in German-occupied Czechoslovakia. This is a very moving experience. -Glass blowing factory outside of Prague. -Private guided city walking tour. The city is absolutely beautiful -The John Lennon Wall -Celebration Dinner Party Gala for all teams from all over the world. This took place at our hotel last summer, where it will take place again. In the historic courtyard of the hotel.

Yes. Plenty of time to go out on your own to dinner. Now that we are staying at The Hilton. You are in the heart of the old world city. Walking to beautiful restaurant and cafes. Amazing location. You will love it. Also you will find that your dollar goes very far in The Czech Republic which is refreshing. Beers and Beer Gardens everywhere. We only have two dinners planned as a group. A few lunches. And breakfasts daily. You will enjoy exploring the beautiful city on your own or with teammates and families. You will make a lot of new friends.

  • Meeting your new teammates from across The Nation. How is this experience?

It was amazing. You have met friends both players and parents for life. Hockey people are great people. Many of our kids from last summer want to come back with the same exact team to compete again. It was awesome. The kids and parents were THE BEST.

  • How is the competition?

High level. As we have said before some of the teams are incredibly skilled. A few of our teams lost to Russian and Czech teams by substantial scores, however our teams typically go .500 during the tournament. Players, families and coaches were amazed by the skill and organization of their hockey systems. The style of hockey is very different in Europe. We epitomize American grit. The Europeans play with more finesse and focus on technicality of finite hockey skills. We have hired the Russian and Czech coach along with Sweden’s top youth hockey skill developer to train our American players next spring and summer at three locations. Italy Sweden and Prague. This is a different experience, focusing on individual training.

  • Will this make me a better hockey player?

100 percent Yes. This experience is culturally and athletically an eye opener.

  • What is the uniform for tournament play?

Included is a game and practice jersey/socks. Custom Bauer. Custom Bauer Tournament tees, jackets and baseball hats are available for purchase on our online store. We must look good to play good. We make our presence known. The Americans are here to compete with our flag on our jerseys. Awesome!

Testimonials

Jeff, Hope all is well – we had a great time in Prague as a family and grateful to you for the experience. Best Regards,
Good Evening Jeff and Mike, Well it’s been a week since we’ve returned from Prague, CZ. Although it is my second trip in a year to that beautiful city, what was much more captivating was the sportsmanship and cohesiveness of the makeshift team. And what pulled at my heartstrings and left me speechless was the kindness and support that the players and their parents showed to our son Jewels. We travel a LOT, but this trip was particularly tough on Jewels. Yes he has autism, and yes we frequent large cities like New York, Philadelphia and even LA. What was new was the amount of time spent at hockey rinks, Also being on a bus with the players and families. Despite his challenges, Jewels bonded with parents and players alike. Eloping was very difficult for us, as he’s older and faster. I’m sure as a parent, you know how scary it is to have a child missing. We are extremely grateful to every single individual who was on our bus, to the young men and their parents who helped out during the week. Your lovely wife was gracious and extremely encouraging. Sometimes we wonder whether to take Jewels to certain places. In the end we know we did the right thing. As we packed our bags for our journey back home, Jewels let us know that he wanted to be back on the bus with the ProAmbitions hockey team, and he wanted to go to the hockey rink. He wanted those suitcases unpacked. Dave and I particularly appreciate the feedback concerning Nathaniel’s development as he enters the high school scene. He is a caring and considerate boy, fast becoming an adult. He bonded seamlessly with members of the team that a few days prior were total strangers. We can truly say that playing with the ProAmbitions team in Prague was the highlight of not only our summer, but of the entire year. Thank you for the memories. In just a few weeks, Nathaniel will have another shot at playing hockey with some of the boys he met in Prague. And I, mom from the Caribbean, look forward to cheering him on in a freezing hockey rink at the Boston Breakout tournament. Take good care; until next year. And do enjoy what remains of summer 2019. Sincerely,

Mary and David Harrison

Thank you Jeff for the great opportunity that we had in Prague, although Hammad got injured, we had a blast, Coach Sones was awesome, and if we have an opportunity to do Prague again, we would very happy to go again. Thank you, Jeff, great tournament and opportunity, he had a great time.

Jeff, I want to thank you for the wonderful trip you put together every year for these boys. John has the time of his life and we are so happy he went with you.

Jeff I just wanted to thank you for putting together the Prague trip. Our family had a great time and made memories our kids will always have. We had an 04, 06 and 07 playing and we were able to balance each kids time with their teams as well as separate family time at places like the Prague zoo. Everything was organized, the guides were top notch and it could not have gone more smoothly. Thanks to Michael for answering all my questions ahead of time and for Garrett and Billy for coaching. All of my kids received positive feedback and coaching, which was great. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone that wants to see a beautiful city and also enjoy some local hockey. Thank you again,
My son, who is a 2004 Goalie and I attended the 2016 Czech Challenge Cup in Prague in August. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity. ProAmbitions did a tremendous job coordinating all the transportation, meals and sightseeing. The hockey experience was amazing. It was great for our USA kids to witness international hockey. The hockey community in the Czech Republic was very cordial and made our visit very enjoyable. I would recommend the trip

The Pro Ambitions Prague trip was the perfect balance of hockey and international travel. The competition was great, families were amazing and seeing a new European city was a lifetime experience. It was a trip my family will never forget. Thank you for including us!

Thanks Pro Ambitions The Madden Family!

Thanks so much for taking all of them! Best tournament for meeting great kids and people!!! Hope to watch our kids play together again!!
The Dunnes had a terrific experience, and good luck to all the boys with their upcoming seasons.

Warm regards to all, Chris & Kelly Dunne

Jeff, Thank you so much for giving Indiana an experience he will cherish the rest of his life. He made lifelong friends on the trip and I did as well. It was great hockey and every game we had was competitive- which is all you can ask for. Indy and I really enjoyed meeting your amazing wife and daughter and wish her the best of luck at Harvard. Indy is friends with her on all social media and will be keeping a close eye on her and cheering her on! ALL the Best until our next great adventure.

Melanie and Indy

Hi All, It was greeting meeting everyone. Casey had a great time. I posted about 150 pictures up on my website. You can find them at 85×200.com under the Spring Hockey tab. Feel free to download and share however you like.

Hope to run into you again Thom

No doubt Zach and I had an absolute blast. I called Zach’s group the Posse. The boys jelled so well they had a ball walking together to the pizza place and probably knows that hotel from rooftop to basement. Testosterone kicked in at these games. Confidence was there but we obviously were also playing against referees. One game had if I am not mistaken almost or over 21 minutes total in penalties for the game. Zack loved all the penalty kills he skated. Zach says the boys plan to reunite for next summer. I told him it is up to the parents. On that thought, count the Cestero’s in for Sweden and Prague maybe even Italy. This time wife Milli has to come.
Bob, Just wanted to put in writing and let you know Dominik and I had a great time with Pro Ambitions in Prague. Your PA team and event planners were super with the weeks events and Darina did a fantastic job meeting and following up with everyone. Especially want to let you know that our coach, Matt Nee was amazing the whole trip and really made our experience both on and off the ice a memorable one. From him running our two practices seamlessly after just arriving and incessantly ‘coaching’ our boys from the bench it was a great hockey experience. Even more importantly, I witnessed Matt bonding with each and every kid on our ’07 team off the ice; not picking any favorites in the short time we had together – which after experiencing dozens of coaches I can say is a rare thing. Even with his wife and new baby there, Matt went out of his way to always be with the team for everything and every ride. I think I can speak for our entire ’07 families in that Pro Ambitions has a great asset in Coach Matt.

Best Regards, Darren Braude

Hi Jeff, We had an amazing time in Prague and couldn’t have imagined having a better coach than Matt! Thank you so much for the opportunity for Evan to play on the 07 Seal Team!! We are very interested in the Italy opportunity in April! We look for to additional communication!

Thank you again – we couldn’t have imagined a better experience!! Barbara Noble

Jeff and ProAmbitions Prague team I wanted to thank you for a truly wonderful weak. As you stated we had some challenges that we had to overcome. We were one of the families that got their equipment on Tuesday as it arrived during the 1st period of our first game. Your wife, Dairine and your team behind the scenes went above and beyond to assist us in getting his equipment back. My wife Ami and I can’t thank everyone enough! With that said, I think that losing the equipment for two days, helped our team create a tighter bond. Everyone on our team and families on other teams immediately started offering up extra equipment. Next thing I knew we had skates, elbow pads, shoulder pads, pants and a stick. If I had to purchase equipment it would have been very limited due to the generosity of everyone on the trip. Ultimately we did not as Dairine came flying up to the rink and the crisis was averted. Brett has been speaking non-stop with his Prague teammates since getting back and not only do they want to play in another overseas tournament together they want to attend an overnight camp together. A unique bond for life. Having Billy as a coach was a real treat as the boys loved playing for him. We had a trip of a trip of a lifetime and it was directly related to all the little things you and your staff did!

Thanks, Chris, Ami, Anna and Brett Edgren

Good Morning! I just wanted to tell you our family had an amazing time last week. Not only was the city beautiful, but the hockey was great. Brendan loved every minute on ice and we discovered that our forward might just be a natural born defenseman— knew there was a reason we still send him to your defense camp every summer as a forward. We enjoyed our time so much, that Brendan is already talking about getting his buddies to come along next summer. Mike was a great coach. Brendan liked him so much that when I just mentioned he’d be coaching an 06 team in Italy, he asked if he could play down again— so if 05’s are allowed, count him in … as a D 🙂

Best Hillary Morrissy

Jeff , Just wanted to tell you how much fun the Boys had in Prague playing hockey and making new friends. It was a family experience we will never forget ! The hockey was awesome and I think the European style was very important for them to get to play and experience first hand . Maura and I also made a lot of new friends including your Wife and daughter! If you get a 03 & 05 team together for Italy next summer count the Casey’s in ! Hope to see you at the club sometime soon .

Very Best , Tom

Hi Jeff! I wanted to share these pictures with you. Jason, Shane, Brodie, Jack and Josh all played together on the 06 team this past summer in Prague! The parents and kids have all have stayed in contact, and we were all able to see each other in Marlboro today! These kids represent three different teams on both the East and West coast. They will be forever friends after playing together in Prague. Thank you for the opportunity. I’m trying to convince them to join us in Sweden/Finland! Hope to see you soon,

Larry, have you worked with Jeff before? He is one of the few men in this whole big hockey world that TRULY CARES about everyone of his players. He is an exceptional human that is a gem among the unfortunate money grab that has gone on in the hockey system in our area(Massachusetts). I think the trip was excellent for our son on many levels: 1. Chance to go to Europe 2. Thrill and excitement of playing teams from other countries on the Russian/Czech turf: John just wanted to beat them from the rivalry that dates back from so long ago in US history. I think this was one of the best parts for him: He has loved the Herb Brooks story and watched Miracle so many times. In a way it let him be a part of this History. 3. Gave him a sense of self in this huge hockey world: showed him that he can play at a level against the Czech team AND WIN! 4.His Team Camaraderie Has been formed with players all over US that I believe will be life long friends. They formed a STRONG bond. They are STILL in a group chat after 13 months later and they see each other at major tournaments or camps and root for each other’s success. When they see each other it is the unspoken connection there always. 5. They left me home and it was a good thing because his Dad let him run the streets of Prague with his team and BOY ????did they have fun. THE STORIES are endless and priceless!!!!! 6. He begs me to go again all the time ! So yes the trip is amazing and your son will gain much from it. I hope this helps. Reach out if you need anything else or any specific questions to my husband.

Jeff Serowik and Martin Straka were former teammates on The Pittsburgh Penguins. Jeff fondly remembers  Marty as one of the most skilled European players and nicest guys in his tenure of hundreds of former professional teammates. Straka is noted as one of the most prolific Penguins of all time as an NHL All Star. Jeff and Straka have teamed up to offer a European style training camp for our American Pro Ambitions youth hockey players in Marty’s hometown outside of Prague in Pilsen. The families who have played for us before on our Pro Ambitions Teams in the Prague Tournament realize that hockey in Prague is quite different than in the USA. Rinks are called Hockey Clubs with restaurants/pubs and private teams.  After leaving the NHL Straka moved back to the Czech Republic and served six more seasons as the team captain of Hockey Club Plzen in Pilsen. Afterwhich he quickly moved into development and coaching. He is now the franchise owner,  general manager of the club and also owns a hotel downtown.  Straka’s team of Czech coaches will be running the training camp. The style of play and training is very different than here in America. There is much to be learned from the Europeans as in turn they have much to learn from us.

Vladislav Tretiak: Goaltending Guru

Over the last few decades, individuals such as Vladislav Tretiak have shaped the game of hockey in unbelievable ways. It has often been noted that Tretiak never had a fair shot to compete in the NHL back in the 1980s, but the Russian netminder changed the face of the game for future goaltenders in his 15-plus seasons with the Russian Red Army Team , CSKA Moscow.

Substack The Hockey Writers Hockey History Banner

Tretiak’s appearances and play in the Olympics, World Championships, Canada Cup, and Summit Series will always be engrained in hockey history and the goalie’s name is rightfully enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a result of his hard work. Politics and stubbornness (on the part of the Soviet Government) were probably the biggest factors that prevented Tretiak from making an impact at the NHL level, but the goalie managed to cement himself in hockey lore by being a pioneer of the goaltending position and revolutionizing the way that goalies play the position in the modern day.

The Butterfly Style

The story of the butterfly style of goaltending cannot be told without mentioning names such as Glenn Hall , Tony Esposito, and Patrick Roy .

Hall is widely considered by many to be the first goalie to employ and perfect the use of the butterfly style. While others improved on his style of play over the decades, being nicknamed “Mr. Goalie” goes to show how much Hall impacted the game during his career. Hall’s achievements in the NHL speak for themselves, but it is safe to say that North Americans were not prepared to see a Russian goalie take center stage at the World Championships, Olympics, and a plethora of other popular hockey events.

Unlike modern butterfly goalies, Tretiak played a style where he combined new aspects of getting low to the ice with classic stand-up methods. The result was outstanding as the goalie vaulted himself into notoriety during the 1972-1973 hockey season as he put on quite a show during the first Summit Series between Russia and Canada. Fans expected Canada to win handily, but Canadians left the series with a great amount of respect for Tretiak who wowed the crowds with his unbelievable style of play against some of the world’s greatest hockey players.

Tretiak’s use of the butterfly style earned him accolades and recognition around the world as one of the most feared, skilled, and intelligent netminders to have never played a single game in the NHL. Even though Canada emerged victorious against the Soviets, Tretiak dispelled any notion that he was a B-rate goalie as he used a mixture of the butterfly and stand-up styles to distinguish himself from the rest of hockey’s elite netminders.

Vladislav Tretiak – Statistical Success and the Impact of the Summit Series

Not much was known about Tretiak before the 1972 Summit Series, but it is safe to say that many North American hockey fans underestimated the skills of the Russian goalie. Even though Tretiak, who was only 20 years old at the time, played to the tune of a 3.87 GAA and .884 save percentage during the 1972 Summit Series, the goalie impressed many Canadian hockey fans as he stole games from a Canadian team that had an all-star laden lineup. While Tretiak fared a little better during the 1974 Summit Series, it should also be of note that Ken Dryden (4.75 GAA, .838 Save Percentage) and Tony Esposito (3.33 GAA, .882 Save Percentage) did not do much better statistically than Tretiak did in the ’72 Summit Series.

After a hotly contested 1972 matchup between Canada and Russia, the hockey world was not satisfied with just one set of games between the dominant hockey forces of the world. The 1974 Summit Series featured the same home and away format as four games would be played in Canada and the other four in the Soviet Union. After leaving Canada, both teams had a victory and two ties, but it would be the USSR that emerged victorious as the Soviets won three of four games in Russia. Tretiak appeared in seven of the eight games and managed to keep his GAA to a 3.57 clip, but the hype surrounding Russia’s netminder was only starting to grow.

Jacques Plante poses for a photo with Vladislav Tretiak

While the USSR dispatched Canada in the ’74 Summit Series , Tretiak’s reputation overseas only grew stronger. The Russian goalie went from a relative unknown to a feared stalwart within a matter of years and it was the goalie’s play that enabled many hockey fans to change their outlook on Russian hockey. Not only did the Summit Series illustrate that future international opponents would have to be much more prepared against the Russian National Team, it provided some much-needed relief during a time when the Cold War crisis was at its peak.

Cold War tensions persisted for more than a decade after Tretiak’s Summit Series debut in 1972, but international hockey provided the USSR and Canada a chance to display their hockey skills to the world. Even if the Summit Series did little to change the perception of the Soviet Union, the play of Tretiak endeared him to hockey fans across the world.

Players such as Valeri Kharlamov, Alexander Gusev, Valery Vasiliev, Boris Mikhailov, Alexander Yakushev, and Vladimir Petrov were just some of the players that dazzled Canadian players and fans with their crisp passing and precision scoring opportunities, but Tretiak certainly came away garnering some great respect from the adversaries and their crowd.

Tretiak’s efforts in the Summit Series and in international play merited him a seventh-round selection by the Montreal Canadiens at the 1983 Draft, but a career in the NHL was not in the workings for the Russian goalie. Even though the two extensive appearances at the ’72 and ’74 Summit Series exposed Tretiak’s abilities and potential, the goaltender put in quite an effort between the ’74 Summit Series and the 1983 Draft to cement his reputation as one of the great goalies of the late twentieth century.

Aside from playing a multitude of games for CSKA Moskva in the ’70s and early ’80s, Tretiak’s resume included a variety of successes on an international level:

Tretiak’s performances on various stages illustrated that the goalie had what it took to compete in Russia and across the world in unfamiliar territory and surroundings. The netminder’s accomplishments included three gold medal victories as an Olympian, ten World Championships appearances that resulted in gold medals, and a gold medal in the 1981 Canada Cup and 1979 NHL Challenge Cup. While Tretiak was no stranger to winning gold medals, the netminder’s resume was all the more impressive because of the fact that he had only won silver (the 1980 loss to the US at the Lake Placid Olympics, 1972 & 1976 World Championships) and bronze (1977 World Championships) a combined four times during a hockey career that wasn’t played to its fullest.

As the years passed by in Russia, Tretiak seemed to improve every year for CSKA Moskva and the same applied to the international tournaments that the goalie participated in. He was undoubtedly an Iron Man for the Russian National Team, but the goalie was not given a fair opportunity to test his abilities overseas as the Soviet government prevented Tretiak from going abroad to play in the NHL. Even though Tretiak prematurely retired after he was denied the opportunity to play for the Canadiens, the goalie’s legacy still lives on to this day and is illustrated in various forms.

Tretiak Transcended the Craft of Goaltending

After retiring in the mid-1980s, Tretiak finally appeared in the NHL in the 90s with the Chicago Blackhawks. While hockey fans did not get to see Tretiak play any hockey upon his arrival to the NHL, his impact was felt during the 1990-1991 season as the Blackhawks’ goaltending coach. While Ed Belfour made it apparent that Tretiak was a boyhood idol for him and other Canadian kids growing up, the goalie mentioned how Tretiak had an impact on him during the ’90-’91 season despite not knowing the English language.

It was in Chicago where Tretiak embarked on the next phase of his career, as Belfour detailed the coach’s impact by saying:

“I had to teach myself for the most part, but we had Tretiak as our goalie coach in Chicago and he wasn’t real technical with us, but we did a lot of drills,” said Belfour, adding it was his first time in a decade of stopping pucks that he did position-specific drills.

Part of Tretiak’s game was based largely on the goalie positioning himself in the most optimal spots in his crease. By cutting down angles, playing deeper in his crease, and being able to incorporate elements of the butterfly and stand-up style, Tretiak was able to put himself in a position where he could react to most of the shots or plays thrown his way. Despite having a slight language barrier, Tretiak was able to impart his knowledge on Belfour, who had an outstanding ’90-’91 season with the Blackhawks as he went 43-19-7 with a GAA below 2.50.

Belfour went on to achieve a great amount of success in the NHL and the tutelage under Tretiak was undoubtedly a boost to “The Eagle” as he commented:

“We had an interpreter but through body language I knew what he wanted me to do,” Belfour said. “He’d put the pads on and go out on the ice with us. In fact, he had the pads on in practice one day and nobody could score on him. And Keenan wanted to start him. But he turned it down and said this is Eddie’s time. I’m still thankful for that, too.”

While some may happen to catch a glimpse of the back of Evgeni Nabokov’s jersey these days and see the number 20 being worn as a modern-day tribute to Tretiak, Belfour was another netminder that wore the same number in honor of his childhood idol. Even though Belfour and Tretiak were only united for one season with the Chicago Blackhawks, positional play became one of the strongest aspects of Belfour’s game as the goalie continued his NHL career with other teams. Tretiak might have only been around for one year with the Blackhawks, but Belfour refined his game throughout the years to become a better positional netminder, much like Vladislav Tretiak.

Former greats such as Phil Esposito have gone on record to say that Tretiak played too deep in his own crease, but the Soviet style of hockey (particularly goaltending) dictated that a goalie should stay in their own crease and rely on lateral movements and reflexes rather than coming out of the net to challenge a shooter. Fusing elements of the butterfly and stand-up style allowed Vladislav Tretiak to be a very successful goalie for CSKA Moskva as well as the Russian National Teams that he played for, but it was the goalie’s ability to show others the tricks of the trade that registered within the hockey community.

Tretiak Establishes a Goalie School

After his time with the Chicago Blackhawks, Tretiak established a goalie school where he tutored the likes of Martin Brodeur and Jose Theodore. While teaching older goalies that were coming into the NHL seemed to be a forte of Tretiak’s, he also established a goalie school for young children. The Vladislav Tretiak Elite School of Goaltending continues to be considered one of the best and most challenging goalie schools in Canada and across the world.

Jose Theodore Montreal Canadiens

Teaching younger kids the craft of hockey goaltending can be a great reward for some and it should come as no surprise why Tretiak’s school has been consistently attracting young kids that want to learn the art of netminding. Tretiak’s name has always been mentioned alongside the goaltending greats of the ’70s and ’80s, but his impact on the hockey community has been just as powerful. Aside from working with elite goalies such as Belfour, Brodeur, Hasek, and Theodore, Tretiak has chosen to dedicate his life to enriching hockey foundations for young kids that want to make it to the NHL someday.

Teaching young kids can be a fulfilling venture for any individual whose heart is in the right place, but Tretiak has made it his goal to share his knowledge with a wide array of individuals.

Being named the President of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation was undoubtedly a huge honor that was bestowed on Tretiak during the mid-2000s and fans should expect the former netminder to avenge Team Russia’s quarterfinal ousting at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Under Tretiak’s tutelage, the Russian Team has won bronze and gold at the men’s ice hockey World Championships and hockey fans should expect some adjustments to be made in order to give Team Russia the best chance of succeeding at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Vladislav Tretiak Will Always Be Considered One of the All-Time Great Goalies

Vladislav Tretiak’s historic career as a hockey player has been hotly contested by hockey fans throughout the last few decades. Some have argued that the hockey world was never able to see Tretiak’s abilities on full display against NHL talent for the course of a full season, but it was Soviet politics that prevented the netminder from ever playing overseas. While Tretiak’s inability to play in the NHL was not done of his own volition, the former goalie has done everything that he can in order to teach his trade to those willing to learn.

Tretiak was surrounded by talented forwards when he played for CSKA Moskva as well as the Russian

National Teams of the 70s and 80s, but one also has to take into consideration that the goalie was put into some of the most pressure-packed situations at a very young age. With Cold War tensions at a high level, Tretiak was thrust into the thick of things during the 1972 Summit Series at a mere 20 years of age. Even though the Russian teams that Tretiak played for were stacked with great offensive talent, the goalie was also exposed to a North American style of play that he was not accustomed to playing against.

After playing in the ’72 and ’74 Summit Series, Tretiak earned his stripes with a good portion of the North American hockey fan-base and he never looked back. During a time when individuals were on their heels because of a possible World War between the world’s superpowers, Tretiak, the Soviet Team, and Team Canada gave hockey fans across the world an outlet through which differences were set aside for the sake of competition. Not only did Vladislav Tretiak play himself into hockey lore during the late 1970s, he opened the door for North Americans to adopt a view of Russian hockey players that had never been imagined before.
