Universal Music Group has announced a long-term partnership with the Weeknd encompassing recorded music, publishing, merchandise and video, the company has announced.

The deal further builds upon the artist’s relationship with UMG’s Republic Records, which has been his label home and partner since 2012 and “will remain his label partner for future recorded music releases,” according to the announcement. It also will see Universal Music Publishing administer all of the Weeknd’s future works and songwriting catalog in a new long-term deal, upon expiration of his existing commitment with Kobalt.

Bravado, UMG’s brand-management and merchandise company, will continue to work closely with the Weeknd and XO to expand and develop global merchandising, branding, ecommerce and retail licensing opportunities around future projects and releases. In addition, the new agreement also covers  future audiovisual projects in collaboration with Republic Records and UMG.

This review might not be completely objective as Abel has been my favourite singer for a few years now. However, I can definitely admit the Starboy tour date in Paris was the best pop concert I've been to this year. Even though some songs could have been put out of the tracklist, he mostly sang his catchiest songs of his career, no matter the era. He has great, or should I say, tremendous energy as he continuously sang twenty-something songs with no pause in between. He has no trouble reaching high notes live, his voice sounding even more heavenly in real life. That night, he invited Travis Scott on stage who pumped up the crowd more than him, which is a shame and showcases very well his lack of success and recognition in France, yet, in a sold out stadium. Most people actually didn't even know his real name or the lyrics of his songs ! I would recommend any "real fan" who has known him for a while or who likes his last album a lot to go to a Starboy tour date. I promise you, you won't regret it.

The concert was absolutely stunning. A starship was used and the lights were coordinated very well. Abel sang amazingly in person and I loved jumping up and down screaming with other members of the audience while he sang. The concert was truly magical and I enjoyed every second Abel stood on stage.

As for the other singers who appeared on stage, I was very satisfied with their singing as well. They did an amazing job and captured the entire audience. In between Abel's music, the other singers such as Lil Uzi and 6lack played their hits on stage and the whole crowd became even more alive. If I the concert played out any other way, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as this concert.

The Weeknd tour kicks off with an apocalyptic stadium rave in Philadelphia

tour manager the weeknd

PHILADELPHIA – If The Weeknd’s “Dawn FM” album is the equivalent of a dance party in purgatory , his live show is nothing less than a rave before the apocalypse.

The emotionally intense singer-songwriter finally achieved liftoff with his After Hours Til Dawn stadium tour on July 14 at Lincoln Financial Field. The launch was not only a victim of COVID-19 postponements over the past two years, but also saw its initial kickoff date delayed last weekend in the performer’s hometown of Toronto, where a nationwide internet outage stymied venue operations.

That pent-up eagerness to perform emerged the moment The Weeknd, sporting a plastic face mask, rose from one of the burned-out building models erected as a part of a skyline on the main stage for “Alone Again,” from his massive 2020 album, “After Hours.”

From there, it was a blitz of chaotic lighting, beat drops and The Weeknd encouraging the sold-out crowd of more than 45,000 like an enthusiastic Peloton instructor as he poured his gorgeous upper range over a trio of “Dawn FM” tracks : “Gasoline,” “Sacrifice” and “How Do I Make You Love Me?”

Welcome to 'Harry's House': Styles' latest taps into synths, funk, loneliness

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Though no band was present (or at least seen), the music unfurled seamlessly and crisply as the man born Abel Tesfaye cavorted between the front stage and a runway that stretched the length of the field, often surrounded by mysterious dancers in full-body shrouds.

At 32, The Weeknd has already crafted record-breaking releases (in January, “Dawn FM” charted 24 songs on Billboard’s Global 200 chart),  headlined a Super Bowl halftime show , boycotted the Grammy Awards and now conceived an ambitious sprawl of a stadium spectacle that mostly flourishes.

The creative setup includes field seating that partially faces the runway rather than the main stage, giving the show an in-the-round vibe (a giant inflatable moon hangs at the other end of the stadium for reasons only The Weeknd could answer). Two small video screens attached to light towers faced those in the nether regions, but with the primary screen used only for aesthetics, more than half of the stadium was denied any close-ups of the singer.

But no one could refute The Weeknd’s unflagging energy, the scope of his catalog curated for the set list or his cool-guy vibe (after about six songs, he stripped off a black coat that had to be sweltering in Philly’s summer humidity, but retained the black gloves that matched the rest of his ensemble).

His appealing blend of New Wave and pop with smidgens of hip-hop and soul were sometimes mixed with dramatic accouterments, such as the church organ that introduced “Hurricane,” his song with Ye.

And while the exceptional lighting – which stuttered with teal shades during “Kiss Land” and the ensuing “Party Monster” – carried the visual aspects of the concert, The Weeknd threw in some rock trappings with giant puffs of pyro exploding along the catwalk and adding to the meltdown of the skyline during “The Hills.” A supply of plastic wristbands handed out to concertgoers upon arrival blinked faithfully during the gliding “I Feel It Coming,” which also featured a cameo of Jim Carrey’s smooth-groove DJ voice from the “Dawn FM” album.

Looking for 'Love'? Think about going to see The Beatles' Cirque show in Vegas

The most major of The Weeknd’s hits – “Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy” and, toward the end of the 100-minute show, “Blinding Lights” – caused mini eruptions in the crowd as they screamed familiar choruses. But throughout the night, his fans, primarily the young men packing the venue, sang his words of love, lust and longing with gusto, The Weeknd their conduit for expression.

With his excellent “Dawn FM” album to still promote, The Weeknd naturally stoked the set list with current single “Out of Time,” a throwback ballad with DeBarge overtones , and the heavenly “Less Than Zero,” its spidery synthesizer inserts the perfect complement to the shimmery keyboards that propel “Save Your Tears,” which preceded it.

Last fall, The Weeknd decided to shift his tour from arenas to stadiums because he had a vision he wanted to present on a major scale. It was worth the wait.

Opening the show in lieu of Doja Cat , who announced in May that tonsil surgery would prevent her from joining the tour, were DJ/producers Mike Dean and Kaytranada (Swedish R&B singer Snoh Aalegra will join Dean on several dates in August).

Dean stood behind a bank of keyboards, presenting chill instrumentals with flecks of electric guitar for his 30-minute set as the crowd filed in. At 7:30 p.m., Kaytranada bounced onto the stage to work his DJ setup – a laptop and mixing board – and slowly elevated the mood as he danced behind his table to remixes of songs by Rihanna and Janet Jackson, while also showcasing his own beats.

Both openers served more as accompaniment rather than artists to engage with – creating even greater anticipation for The Weeknd’s arrival.

The Weeknd, Madonna, Playboi Carti "Popular"

The Weeknd has become the first Canadian artist to achieve seven diamond certified singles, following the RIAA ‘s certification of “Save Your Tears” and “Die For You.” He’s also the fourth overall artist to score seven or more diamond tracks, which marks at least 10 million equivalent units sold.

Madonna, the Weeknd & Playboi Carti Live the Lush Life in ‘Popular’ Video

The song peaked at No. 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 14 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs . With “Popular,” Madonna joined the elite company of artists who have earned Hot 100-charting hits in five distinct decades. Madonna’s most recently released song to reach platinum status was the Justin Timberlake collab “4 Minutes,” which was released in 2008 and certified platinum in June of that year. Also this week, Madonna’s 1986 “Papa Don’t Preach” single was certified platinum.

“We had a different version of this song prior, so I’ve had these vocals for a while and I’ve kind of worked around it and then kind of kept it in the tuck. But now, it was time. And it felt right,” the “Blinding Lights” hitmaker (real name Abel Tesfaye) told Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe in an interview last June. “[Madonna is] the ultimate co-sign for this song, for this album, and for this TV show.”

Tesfaye is one of three artists to have produced seven diamond singles throughout his career alongside Rihanna and Post Malone, the latter of whom holds the record for the most diamond certified singles with nine.

The Weeknd Spotted at Kendrick Lamar's 'Pop Out' Concert in Los Angeles

Unlike former toronto raptor demar derozan, the scarborough-born artist never got onstage, but he was in the audience of the show that featured drake diss tracks 'not like us' and 'euphoria.'.

Kendrick Lamar took over the internet last night (June. 19) with his "Pop Out" concert live-streamed on Prime Video from the Kia Forum in Los Angeles . If it wasn't clear Kendrick had won public opinion in his beef with Drake, it was when the stage united cultural figures from L.A. — from up-and-comers to legends like Dr. Dre, basketball stars like Russell Westbrook, even someone Drake name-dropped in one of his diss tracks, DJ Mustard — to dance along to the scathing "Not Like Us."

DeMar DeRozan, the beloved former Toronto Raptor who was once close enough to Drake that he spilled the beans on an upcoming mixtape joined fellow L.A.-born NBA player Westbrook onstage at the Forum during "Not Like Us."

advertisement

But it wasn't only Californians getting noticed. One Toronto native was there too, and it was someone Drake has had a complicated history with: Abel Tesfaye a.k.a. The Weeknd. Clips have surfaced today of of the Scarborough, Ontario singer having a good time in the audience. He was there with rapper Big Hit, the father of Hit-Boy, a producer with major credits including Drake's hit "Trophies."

Drake and The Weeknd have had an on-again off-again relationship as friends and collaborators, but have had a slow-simmering beef that's hid in the cracks of the beef with Kendrick Lamar.

In "All to Myself," a collaboration with Future and Metro Boomin on their We Still Don't Trust You album, The Weeknd sings “They could never diss my brothers, baby/ When they got leaks in they operation/ I thank God that I never signed my life away" — a line many interpret as a reference to Tesfaye turning down a deal with OVO Records to sign with Republic and launch his own XO Records in 2012.

Drake hit back with a line for Tesfaye on "Family Matters": I know you like to keep it short, so let me paraphrase/ Knew it was smoke when Abel hit us with the serenade." There was also speculation Drake threw shots at The Weeknd manager Cash XO on "Push Ups."

The Weeknd kept a relatively low profile, staying off the stage at Kendrick Lamar's "Pop Out" show, but he was there in the crowd amongst others including LeBron James and SZA. That's more than enough to keep the conversation going today.

Avril Lavigne

The Canadian superstar has been given one of the country's highest honours, in the same month as she's released her first greatest hits compilation album of fan favourites, accompanied by a tour set for August.

One of Canada's biggest stars is getting one of the country's highest honours.

Pop star Avril Lavigne has been named to the Order of Canada, a civilian honour that recognizes outstanding achievements and contributions to the country. Lavigne was announced by Governor General Mary Simon yesterday, amongst a list of 83 new appointees that includes scientists, economists, poets and activists.

Lavigne's appointment notice highlights her impressive commercial and artistic achievements, as well as her charity work. "With over 50 million albums sold worldwide, she paved the way for female-driven punk-rock music and continues to do so today," the notice reads, going on to mention her support of individuals living with disabilities and serious illnesses through the Avril Lavigne Foundation.

Lavigne is one of Canada's best-selling artists, with ten Juno awards to her name. The Order of Canada appointment comes as Lavigne is celebrating her successes with Greatest Hits , a new compilation released June 21 featuring platinum singles like "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" as well as her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Girlfriend."

The Canadian icon is also taking her hits on the road with a major tour , which kicked off in Vancouver in May and begins its second leg in Toronto on August 12, with a sold-out Scotiabank Arena show.

Beyond the charts, Lavigne helped pave the way for a punk-inspired vision of girlhood in the early 2000s, when most female pop stars were embracing a more traditionally feminine image. Lavigne's brash attitude and white tank top and tie combo cemented her as an icon for a generation of Canadian kids.

That influence has been recognized of late with Lavigne receiving recognition from Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 2022, Canada's Walk of Fame in 2023 and now the Order of Canada.

Lavigne wasn't the only musician recognized by the Order of Canada this week. Montreal singer-songwriter Daniel Lavoie was named an Officer of the Order, as were percussionist Beverley Johnston and conductor Kent Nagano.

Late last year, longtime host, broadcaster and Apple Music DJ George Stroumboulopoulos was also named to the Order of Canada. Read more about that here .

Davon gingen laut spanischen Medien 7,2 Millionen Euro direkt an ASO. Rund 2 Millionen Euro flossen in Sicherheitsmaßnahmen.

Texas security guard quits job during live tv interview, texas security guard quits job during live tv interview ... after on-duty assault.

A security guard in Texas quit his job live on-air after his manager scolded him for being in uniform while he was telling local TV crews about being assaulted on duty.

Percy Payne was doing an interview with FOX 7 Austin when his manager came up and told him he was breaking company policy. The two argued until Percy abruptly turned in his uniform and quit on the spot.

The reason Percy was talking to the news station ... he's got surveillance video showing what he claims is him being assaulted by two men at the parking garage he protects.

Percy was recalling how two young men on electric scooters pulled up to his job site and tussled with him on surveillance video when his manager appeared and gave him a dressing down.

The manager tells Percy the alleged assault was his fault ... and that's when he reaches a boiling point and quits ... then finishes his interview in street clothes.

For his part, Percy claims the men from the video were trying to steal his car ... and that's what led to the physical exchange.

Percy's also upset with the police response to the on-duty incident. When it rains it pours.
