8 Things To Know Before Visiting Dibrugarh

Encircled by the grand Brahmaputra River on one side, and expansive tea estates on the other; Dibrugarh is a scenic city nestled in Upper Assam. Having pioneered the tea trade in this northeastern region along with timber and oil, Dibrugarh soon blossomed into the bustling 'Camellia Capital of India' renowned globally for producing finest Assam tea.

Beyond rolling carpets of neatly clipped green bushes lie misty hills, serene wetlands and verdant rainforests sheltering exotic species waiting to be explored. As you plan your trip to soak in the nostalgic vestiges, brittle sunshine, warmth and varied treasures of Dibrugarh, here's a comprehensive guide for making your discovery truly fulfilling.

1.The Tea Plantation Capital

No Dibrugarh visit feels complete without ambling past the lush tea estates producing the region's Black Gold from century-old bushes nurtured in fertile red soil. Sip fragrant brews like Golden Tips or Irish Breakfast, buy Green Tea variant gift boxes while learning cultivation nuances.

Popular estates are Chowkidinghee Tea Estate near Dinjoy area spanning 200 hectares that organizes Tourist Homestays for immersive plantation living alongside factory visits. The 200-year-old Hookhmali Tea Estate offers fascinating Land Rover Rides through lush gardens followed by Seven Spring Tea tastings amidst their colonial-era bungalow lawns. Don't miss their special Silver Needle White Tea produced through meticulous harvesting.

2.Cultural Insights at Heritage Houses

Beyond lush estates, step back in time at magnificent heritage houses ornately built by pioneering Assamese tea planters using fortunes reaped from the flourishing crops. These sites allow glimpses into the opulent lifestyles and contributions of 19th century industrialists who propelled Dibrugarh's tea fame.

The crafted brick-and-wood Chowkidinghee Mansion built on the ruins of Ahom palaces, impresses with stained glass ceilings, chandeliers and a unique fusion of Gothic, Assamese and Colonial styles through its lounges, libraries and exquisite furniture over five levels. Pay respects at their family temple behind.

Radha Pukhuri offers a lakeside bungalow retreat owned by British-era planter Hem Barooah who introduced pioneering cultivation techniques. The tastefully furbished cottage filled with memoires provides charming lawns to enjoy fish fries or row across the tranquil lake.

The Heritage North East Museum run by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) documents Dibrugarh's development through 4000 artefacts, costumes, tools and photographs letting you glimpse prominent families and trade talents. Seek stories from the ever-helpful volunteers here.

3.Cruise Upon the Mighty Brahmaputra

No trip here feels complete without time spent bonding upon the expansive Brahmaputra River waters passing through Dibrugarh in all her mighty splendor. For leisurely cruises, embark from Bogibeel Ghat for fishing villages with scenic hills in the distance. Or try the Double Decker River Boat from A.T Road Ghat for evocative sunset views where gulls circle above calm waters blending serene shades.

Relish freshly fried countryside fish snacks onboard washed down with creamy Dibrugarh Milk Tea sweetened with sugar cane jaggery. For overnight trips, cruise towards Dibru-Saikhowa National Park for glimpses of river islands (saporis) sheltering rare flora-fauna. Camp under twinkling skies after wildlife sightings. Options are luxury houseboats with balcony views or camping on beaches alongside village chokey stays trying local dishes.

4.Wildlife Encounters Beckon

Venture across the swirling river by motorboats to discover Dibru-Saikhowa Biosphere Reserve, famed as a biodiversity haven for rare creatures documented since 1870s, some even discovered here first.

Cruise by magisterial Sal (teakwood) trees rising from the sparkling wetlands, flanked by water meadows sheltering frolicking otters, rare black necked storks and endangered Gangetic River Dolphins. Your naturalist guide will regale with jungle tales during forest and grassland treks, maybe spotting wild buffaloes or golden langur families enroute to treehouse stays.

The dense Diphu Reserve Forests are equally biodiverse and less discovered, promising hikes through Sal glades and bouncing streams to spot shy clouded leopards, serows amid exotic orchids, endemic plants. Try local cuisine at eco-camps after exhilarating jungle days teeming with natural wonders.

5. Flavorful Local Repasts

After wilderness wanders, allow tastebuds to dive into Dibrugarh's flavourful fares blending Assamese with ethnic tribe influences:

Try starters like spicy dried fish fries followed by wholesome Red Rice with Duck Curry or flavoursome Chicken with Bamboo Shoots, simmered overnight in earthen pots over charcoal ovens to let smoky aromas seep through. Balance fiery tongue tingles with cooling Tenga Masor sides made tangy with juicy elephant apple.

Desserts bring fragrant Pitha rice cakes with fresh coconut, banana or sesame flavours served with curd. Don't miss out on scoops of aromatic Tulsi scented Bhoot Jolokia Ice Cream, guaranteed to make you see stars!

Pair the feast with Xaj Panir, a digestive side made rich with cream, cottage cheese, rice powder and spices. Top up meals with Sulfi / Phulkar Thiya herbal teas popular with locals.

6. Famed Duchess of Dibrugarh

Any exploration remains incomplete without knowing about Radhika Paul, an eminent tea entrepreneur who scripted many firsts in the erstwhile male bastion. After her parents' untimely deaths, the 16-year-old Radhika assumed charge of family's poorly-run Chowkidinghee Estate in 1960s transforming it into Assam's largest plantation through innovative cultivation, welfare and environmental efforts that raised productivity, profits and local living standards tremendously.

This pioneering role model greatly inspired women's advancement regionally and her enterprising success led her being fondly addressed as Duchess of Dibrugarh. She was also vocal supporter of varied philanthropic initiatives benefitting the youth. The Chowkidinghee Mansion now immortalizes her eventful, empowering life story for all who stop by.

7. Soaking in Twilight Sublime

As evenings approach after soul-stirring sojourns, head towards the rustic Dadhia village facing the Brahmaputra River Islands to witness an ethereal natural spectacle.

Just as the sun begins descending in a riot of golden orange hues, countless winged visitors arrive honking loudly and settle cosily on the slender bamboo groves along the riverbanks. These Amrit Dhara riverine wetlands then transform into a feathered spectacle with over 50 resident and migratory birds species flocking here from Russia, China and Himalayas to roost!

Stand awestruck by amicable swarms of geese, pelicans, storks, herons, cormorants and more jostling for premium perches, turning dyed crimson skies into vivid canvases with their elegant silhouettes. An exhilarating avian orchestra continues late into dusk before deep slumber. Witnessing this soulful gathering wrapped in Brahmaputra's embraced provides beautiful closure to remarkable Dibrugarh memories.

8. Travel Convenience

Dibrugarh enjoys smooth domestic and international access through:

Mohanbari Airport has flights from Kolkata besides helicopter charters. Railheads operate regular broad gauge trains on journeys over 500 kilometers long towards New Delhi and Kolkata. Luxury buses by Network Travels ply towards Shillong (Meghalaya) besides Guwahati and Jorhat covering 200 kilometers in 5 hours.

Waterways remain vital for closeby towns using steamers and country boats. State transport and reserved taxis like Ola, Uber operate locally. Auto-rickshaws also easily found but clarify language differences. September to May remains ideal with temperate weather. Carry hats, umbrellas and light woollens.

For discerning souls seeking profound journeys, Dibrugarh shines bright with her rare treasures - from aromatic first flush teas nurtured lovingly for generations to tropical biospheres resonating with exotic creatures; framed eternally by the Brahmaputra waters gushing through. Lose yourself to the rhythms of this charming Camellia County waiting to be discovered.

Amritpal Singh Khadoor Sahib Waris Punjab De Chief Dibrugarh Jail Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Khadoor Sahib MP-Elect Amritpal Singh's Father Meets Him In Assam Jail After Poll Win, Asks Govt To 'Withdraw All Cases'

The parents of Amritpal Singh, leader of 'Waris De Punjab' and newly elected independent MP from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib constituency, visited him in Dibrugarh Central jail on Saturday. His father, Tarsem Singh, conveyed Amritpal's gratitude to voters and called on the government to drop the charges against him, allowing him to serve his constituency in the Lok Sabha. The visit came after Singh secured victory in the recent parliamentary elections, despite his incarceration since March 2023.

"He (Amritpal Singh) asked to thank every voter who supported him... He will work to serve the public... The public has given such a big mandate, the government should withdraw all the cases and should allow him to raise the voice of Punjab in Lok Sabha," Tarsem Singh told reporters after meeting his son in the jail.

"It is not in either his or our hands to get him out of here for his oath-taking ceremony. The legal procedures would have to be checked and followed to initiate steps in this direction," he added.

Amritpal Singh's parents, Tarsem Singh and Balwinder Kaur, were received at the airport by his wife Kirandeep Kaur, who has been in Dibrugarh since June 5. They went to the jail to meet their son, who has been held there since March 2023.

"We are very happy that our son has won the elections. We have come to meet him so that he will also feel happy that people love him and elected him by such a huge margin," Amritpal's father had said before him.

According to a PTI report, Balwinder Kaur was seen distributing sweets to jail employees, celebrating her son's victory. She mentioned bringing a new set of clothes and shoes for her son for his oath-taking ceremony as an MP.

Amritpal's wife was accompanied by advocate and former Punjab MP Rajdeo Singh Khalsa, who said that all necessary legal steps were being taken to secure his release. Khalsa, according to PTI, claimed that the Sikh community voted for Amritpal because they saw "leadership qualities" in him.

Amritpal Singh won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat by 1,97,120 votes as an independent candidate, defeating Congress's Kulbir Singh Zira and AAP's Laljit Singh Bhullar. Amritpal polled 4,04,430 votes, Zira received 2,07,310 votes, and Bhullar 1,94, 836 votes.

Ten members of the pro-Khalistani outfit, including Amritpal and one of his uncles, have been in Dibrugarh Central Jail since March 19 last year. They were arrested under the National Security Act following a crackdown on the outfit.
