17 Amazing Tourist Spots in Luzon, Philippines: Ultimate Guide

This comprehensive guide will take you through the most beautiful places and tourist spots in Luzon Island in the Philippines. You will find out the most important information like prices, transportation and how to get there, accommodation or the estimated time needed for visit.

1) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Rice terraces in B anaue & Batad

There is a lot of rice fields in northern Luzon but in Batad and Banaue they are concentrated in one hilly place, where they create an absolutely amazing landscape. The locals call those rice terraces the eighth wonder of the world!

The rice terraces in Batad can be reached only by walk. We definitely recommend visiting this lovely remote mountain village! It is almost unbelievable that there are still inhabited places that you can reach only by foot. We spent there whole 2 days – walking through these amazing rice terraces and taking pictures. According to the locals, rice terraces are a profitable business.

How to get to Banaue & Batad?

A lot of tourists visit only Batad rice terraces as the only place in Luzon. Well, this monumental scenery is absolutely worth it! Although, we recommend combining this trip with Sagada.

Getting from Manila to Banaue

You can book bus tickets from  Manila to Banaue and back at 12GO . The journey between Manila and Banaue takes 8-10 hours. You can get a one-way ticket from $ 13 (PHP 450).

There are 3 bus companies, each starting from a different location in Manila:

• Ohayami Transit – corner of Fajardo Street and Lacson Avenue, Sampaloc Manila
• Danga Transit – Florida Cubao Terminal near Kamias
• Coda Lines – Cubao HM Transport Terminal

Getting from Banaue to Batad

Batad is located about 18 km from Banaue. The Jeepney (minibus) to Batad goes regularly only once a day, at 3 PM. The journey takes about 45 minutes and it cost 150 PHP. Jeepney back to Banaue leaves from Batad early in the morning (ask for the exact time at your hostel).

If you miss that Jeepney, you can go by tricycle for 400 PHP (or for 300 PHP only to the saddle – it is 3 more kilometers by foot from there). Alternatively, you can arrange some other taxi, but that is going to be more expensive.

Another option is to take the Jeepney towards Bangaan or Mayoyao and get off at Batad Junction. From here it is 6 km by walk (and it’s uphill).

Sagada – Bontoc – Banaue

If you are arriving from Sagada, you have to get to Bontoc first. There is a regular Jeepney from Sagada to Bontoc (timetable is available at Sagada tourist office). There are shared vans going from Bontoc to Banaue for 150 PHP. They are supposed to have 1-hour interval during the morning, but the driver is waiting for the passengers to fill up the van completely. The journey from Bontoc to Banaue takes about 2 hours.

If you want to get from Sagada to Batad in 1 day, you should leave Sagada early in the morning.

Where to stay in Banaue ?

There are multiple different options in Banaue . We recommend Bogah Homestay with a wonderful view of the rice terraces.

Where to stay in Batad ?

Our favorite place was Ramon’s place . If you search a good value for money pick Batad View Inn and Restaurant . In general, don’t expect anything luxurious (everything is very difficult to bring/carry here). Expect simple facilities, but very welcoming hosts.

You can also choose from many other options, whether at Agoda or Booking .

What should you consider?

In any case, we do not recommend traveling with a suitcase to Batad village. Prepare for a mountain trek to get there, so the suitcase is not an ideal choice. Everything is much easier with a backpack in the Philippines.

Batad – Trip to the Tappiya waterfall

Trek to Tappiya Waterfall is a popular hiking trip from Batad. Narrow paths around the rice terraces with significant descent will bring you to the Tappiya waterfall. The landscape is beautiful and you can extend your trek as you wish by wandering around the beautiful rice terraces.

They will try to offer you to pay for trekking guides at your accommodation, but that is not necessary (GPS and offline map is enough).

Recommended time to stay in Banaue a Batad

We recommend spending at least 2 full days to enjoy the rice terraces and the mountain area of Batad and Banaue, there.

2) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Sagada

Sagada is a magical and very interesting village, which has a lot to offer. Whether you plan to visit the mystical aerial cemetery, so-called Hanging Coffins or stroll to a nearby waterfall, beautiful church, or explore Sagada Caves with a dose of adrenaline speleology!

How to get to Sagada?

From manila to sagada.

If you are heading from Manila directly to Sagada, there is nothing easier than booking your bus online. The journey takes 12 hours and buses depart from Manila in the morning. Prices start at $ 18.

From Baguio to Sagada

You can get to Sagada by GL Trans buses, which leave Baguio every hour from 6:00 AM, the last bus departs at 13:00. Buses depart from the bus terminal: Baguio City. The journey takes 5-6 hours. You can buy tickets on the spot.

After you arrive in Sagada:

The bus stops right in front of the tourist information office, where you have to register and pay the tourism fee (you won’t be able to book any activity without this confirmation).

There is an ATM at the tourist information office.

Accommodation in Sagada

There are some options to choose from in   Sagada . We can recommend Agape Log Cabin And Restaurant with a beautiful wooden interior in the heart of the village.

2a) Hanging Coffins in Sagada

A truly mystical place is located nearby the village of Sagada. There is an aerial cemetery high in the rocks called Hanging Coffins. Several dozens of coffins are either hung directly on the rock or simply stacked on top of each other in caves among the rocks. That is the 2,000-year-old  Igorot  burial tradition.

However, not everyone can be buried in this honor way. There are some criteria:

• A person must be over 80 years old
• Must have children
• His/her children must be married
• And also must have grandchildren

Although the Philippines is a Christian country, this funeral ritual is open to non-Christians as well. The only difference is the type of coffin. Non-Christians are buried in a hollowed tree trunk tied with a rope and placed inside in a fetal position.

Except Hanging Coffins hanging you can see also a lot of coffins in the caves around the trail in Echo Valley. Some coffins are already falling apart.

Why are the hanging coffins hanging?

Our guide told us, that they were simply worried that dogs will eat the corpse. Another reason was that they wanted to be closer to the sky due to the belief that the higher the dead were placed, the greater the chance for their spirits reaching a higher nature in the afterlife. Believe it or not, this tradition is still ongoing, the latest man was buried in 2010.

Hanging Coffins: Entrance fee and guides to Echo Valley

You are required to pay for a local guide and there is no other way to visit Echo Valley without the guide. You can join some other people to pay for one guide together. If you are 4 you will pay around 200-300 PHP per person.

The journey to the Echo Valley begins several dozens of meters behind the Sagada church. You can leave your backpack at the stand where the entrance fee is collected. Your guide is probably going to be someone local. Our guide told us that her grandma was buried high in the rocks in the Echo Valley.

2b) Sagada Caves

Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave is truly impressive creation of mother nature. You can easily book a guided caving tour at the Tourist Center. There are 2 options:

• Shorter Samuguing Cave (tour last approx. 2-2,5 hours), which is quite easy and safe, or:
• Lumiang – Sumaguing Cave connection , which is quite adventurous ( tour last approx. 4-5 hours)

Lumiang-Sumaguing cave connection – Sagada

We decided to take the adventurous option . But we did not expect that much adrenaline… We got headlamps and started climbing down to the bottom of the cave. Some places required nearly acrobatic positions (seriously, nothing for overweight people). Well, most of the rock was really slippery and I don’t even want to know how deep was the abyss we had to climb around with no safety materials. After this excursion, we understood why there were T-shirts with giant letters – “I survived Sagada” in every souvenir shop.

Prepare to get a little wet and dirty, you are going to climb wet rocks, and sometimes you will need to climb up the rope as well. Regarding the safety standards – this would not be allowed in Europe 😀 Be prepared for that and enjoy it!

2c) The Church of Saint Mary the Virgin in Sagada

Be sure to visit the Church of Saint Mary the Virgin. It is an Anglican church that was built in 1904 by American missionaries. You can visit it on the way to Hanging Coffins.

2d) Bomod-ok and other waterfalls in Sagada

You can take a nice track to the Bomod-ok waterfalls, where you can even swim. Allow about 4-6 hours for the whole trip. There is a possibility to arrange a guide for 500 PHP in the tourist office.

If you want to explore other waterfalls in the area, you can visit Bokong Falls , with a beautiful lagoon where you can swim or another waterfall – Pongas Falls.

Recommended time for Sagada

You will need 2 days to fully enjoy what Sagada offers.

3) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Baguio

Baguio is a lovely city where you will probably stop on your way to Sagada. It has become the summer “capital” of the Philippines thanks to its high altitude (1540 meters above seas level) and the pleasant temperature. Check this Baguio itinerary to plan your trip.

3a) Mines View Park in Baguio

Viewing deck at Mines View Park is one of the most famous and most visited places of Baguio. It is located in the north-western part of the town (4 km from the center). Mines View Park offers beautiful views of the city and former gold mines and copper mines. Apart from several souvenir stalls, you can try traditional Cordirela Regalia clothing.

How to get to Mines View Park?

There is a Jeepney line “Plaza to Mines View” available from the city center. The terminal is located at the bottom of Mabini Street opposite the Danes Bakeshop. The journey takes 5-10 minutes and costs around 12 PHP.

3b) Baguio Cathedral

Cathedral of Our Lady of Atonement in Baguio is located right on the top of the hill with a nice view of the city. If you go by walk from the center, you will find a long and steep staircase on a very steep street. It is a beautiful Roman-Catholic Cathedral and we can definitely recommend visiting it!

3c) Baguio City Market

Baguio City Market is a very nice place to see, even if you don’t plan shopping. You will see a lot of fruits, vegetables, spices, fish, etc. The City Market is spread along Magsaysay Avenue.

3d) Burnham Park

Burnham Park is located in the very center of the city is a nice place to have a walk. You can buy ice cream, fruits, go for a “Swan ride”, rent a bike or even roller-skate in the indoor arena.

We found a good and cheap restaurant there – The Ganza Restaurant.

3e) Baguio night market

If you stay overnight, visit the night market. It takes place every evening, between 9 PM and midnight right next to Burnham Park in the middle of Harrison Road.

3f) Baguio Botanical Garden

If you are a fan of different flowers and plant species, you may also like visiting the botanical garden. Baguio Botanical Garden is also known as Igorot Village (there are the original cottages or carved sculptures) and at the entrance, you can also take a picture with a group of locals wearing traditional costumes. There is no entrance fee to Baguio Botanical Gardens. Garden closes at dusk.

How to get to Baguio Botanical Garden?

4) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Hundred Islands National Park

This could be the most beautiful National Park on Luzon island. There are exactly  123 small islands in this beautiful National Park.  You can  hire a boat  and your captain or boatmen will guide you among these cute islands. It is just a very short distance from the island to the island. There is a very nice view from several Islands! You can even ride a  zip-line  from one of these Hundred Islands. I must admit that this zip-line was the most beautiful one I’ve ever tried! Actually, there is a wide range of activities . You can make a single day trip or choose the overnight option.

What to expect?

There is a statue of Jesus – almost like in Rio, a cave you can swim in (and also jump into at the high tide), another island has an excellent restaurant, beach, and bridge from one island to another. You can also enjoy a superb zipline with amazing views on Governor’s Island, do a cool snorkeling stop or visit a bamboo ba r, which has a perfect ramp for jumps.

Entrance fee to Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Before embarking on an adventure cruise, you need to visit Park Infocentre, which is right in the harbor. You a required to register there and pay the entry (you will receive a document which you will present to your boatmen).

• Park entrance 30 PHP per person.
• Environmental fee 40 PHP/day per person.

TIP: Bring enough cash! It is not possible to pay by card on islands.

As mentioned, you can choose between a one-day trip and overnight stay. If you decide to take overnight stay , except that it will be at least twice as expensive. It is also necessary to book accommodation on the islands (from 1000 PHP) or if you have your own tent, you only pay 200 PHP. They will tell details at the information center.

Hiring a boat (with boatmen)

Price of the boat depends on its size . You can arrange a group of people to share costs. But consider that the trip is variable and it’s up to your decision (group decision if you are more people there) how much time you spend on each island. So different people will have different needs, that is why it’s maybe worth paying for the private boat.

• Small boat (1-5 person) – 1400 PHP per day (3000 PHP for 2 days)
• Middle size boat (6-10 person) – 1800 PHP per day (3800 PHP for 2 days)
• Big boat (11-15 person) – 2000 PHP per day (4500 PHP for 2 days )

Activities at Hundred Islands National Park – Luzon

Hundred Islands National Park offers a lot of activities. Here is a price list:

Kylah Pension (Transient) House has a perfect location directly in the harbor. On the other side, the cheapest option is Villa Milagros Pension House (accommodation in a shared room). You can also check other options in the area.

If you are heading to Bolo Beach, you can stay at the Santorini mini-resort with a private beach, Santorini has excellent references.

How to get to Hundred Islands National Park?

Bus from manila to alaminos.

The first step is to get to Alaminos. You can book direct buses to Alaminos from Manila at 12GO . The journey takes about 3-4 hours. From Alaminos, you can easily reach the port by tricycle. Look for the Lucap tricycle terminal.

5) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Mt. Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is a volcano with a beautiful Crater Lake in the middle. Its colors change every week according to the lake plankton lifecycle. The color can range from turquoise blue, green to brown.

The trip is a great experience from the beginning. There is a wide river, so you will be transported by an army vehicle, which must be assisted by a giant tractor so help it cross the river. You can’t get there without a guide, it is necessary to join an organized tour , which includes transport across the river and to the beginning of the hiking trail.

As soon as you get to the “truck” base, there is going to be a little trip introduction with coffee or tea. Time to get ready to jump on the army vehicle or jeeps and head off. The road is incredibly dusty . You can see the indigenous people of Aeta Tribe on the way. As soon as trucks arrive at the trailhead, it is time to start 7 km hike up. There are toilets at the beginning if you need.

The trail leads through the volcanic landscape and laters through the gorge with the river. There are some simple souvenirs shop and snack bars on the way. There is a beautiful view of Crater Lake at the end. The color of the lake will be a surprise…

How to get to Mount Pinatubo?

There are some options to choose from. You can either go directly from Manila , join the tour at designated pick-up locations or come directly to the “truck” base nearby Mount Pinatubo.

If you go by bus directly from Manila, be prepared for very early departure (around 3 or 4 AM from Manila).

You are likely to meet locals returning from the nearest town on their water buffalo and later even visit them directly in one of their huts!

6) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Vigan

If you are a fan of Spanish Colonial Architecture , you should definitely visit Vigan. The city is listed at UNESCO World Heritage List. 7) Tourist Spots in Luzon – Manila

I would like to give you a friendly advice: Don’t stay in this city longer than you need to. Manila is a city of contrasts. Although you can find there, luxury western cafés, where coffee cost around 3 USD or fast foods like McDonald’s, you can find there also street grills, where a 9-year-old boy is preparing dinner for you and even his younger brother assists him with accepting payments meanwhile their father (who is sitting nearby) is watching them.

You can get across half of the city for 0,15 UDS only. Believe me, it is not a pleasant experience, I was glad I didn’t suffocate with all that smog! If you drive Jeepney or a tricycle, you have no chance to avoid literally black clouds of smoke from all these old vehicles. Every single ecologist would get mad there! Rivers and streets are full of garbage, rubbish, and dirt.

During our travels, we are used to walking around the city according to our GPS and point of interests. It’s NOT the best idea in Manila! During that walk, we found ourselves in places where you realize how lucky you are that you can live somewhere else. We saw children sleeping on the streets or other people who live in the most primitive “shelters” around the street. Chickens and cocks were tunning around the streets in the middle of this ugly city. It was highly inappropriate to take pictures of that scenery, so there is no illustration.

Manila Ocean park

If you have some time, Manila Ocean Park is nice place to visit . You can see the aquariums, parrot, and seal show. The best and cheapest is the Ocean Park Attraction Pass   (with the lowest price guarantee).

Accommodation in Manila

The best accessible area near the airport is Pasay . There is also a bus station , from where you can get o buses to explore places in Luzon Island.

LUZON TOURIST SPOTS

1. pagudpud.

We have been visiting twice Pagudpud so far and it’s one of our top tourist spots in the Philippines. It’s so quiet and great place to take pictures. Most of the tourists are locals.

The beaches are so beautiful and the sunsets are so colorful. Plus there are many places to visit around Pagudpud which keeps us busy for a few days always that we go to Pagudpud.

2. BANGUI WINDMILLS, ILOCOS NORTE

Bangui Wind Farm  is a wind farm in Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. The wind farm is  created to supply electricity to the province. Thus, the windmills are not only beautiful to look at; they are also useful and environmental tools used to supply electricity.

The beach is so windy an ideal for taking pictures. To get Bangui windmills from Pagudpud is 25 kilometers ride.

Laoag on the way to Pagudpud is a nice place to stop for trying local food. You can visit St. William’s Cathedral in Laoag City is famous for its Sinking Bell Tower. It is one of the things that will capture the attention of the tourists upon entering the city.

The bell tower is one of the landmarks of Spanish colony in the Philippines. The tower has earned its “sinking” reputation because it is so heavy and it was built on sandy foundations that it has been consistently sinking into the ground.

Vigan is a city in the Philippines located in Ilocos Sur. It’s known for its preserved Spanish colonial and Asian architecture. And because of its beauty and its well-preserved Spanish-era streets, Vigan has been listed as a  UNESCO World Heritage Site . Great place to walk around, try local food and visiting museums to know more about the Filipino history.

6. LA UNION

La Union is  one of the most popular spots for surfers . But this place is more than just its beautiful waves! There are many things to do apart from surfing. The nightlife is great and there are beautiful beaches in Bacnotan just 10 kilometers far from La Union.

After visiting Banaue and Sagada, you might want to go on a trip to Baguio City, the Summer Capital of the Philippines. It is a famous place for its temperature, beautiful views, and of course, strawberries!

If you are available, try to visit during the month of February because it is when the month-long Panagbenga Festival is celebrated! Panagbenga Festival is also known as the Flower Festival and it is the most awaited festival in Baguio City. Experience dancing on the streets with large flower costumes and loud music.

8. BANAUE RICE TERRACES, IFUGAO

Found on the northern part of Luzon, Banaue is one of the tourist spots in the Philippines. This is the perfect place if you want to take a break from the city and inhale fresh air, feel the cold breeze, and feed your eyes with stunning views. Banaue and Batad rice terraces are amazing and it’s great to get lost around the area!

Hike the downtown up to Banaue Viewpoint because it really feels good to be at the top of the mountain! Banaue is one of the spots where you will realize how beautiful nature is. You should also try watching Ifugao cultural shows and dance to the sound of gongs.

9. SAGADA, MOUNTAIN PROVINCE

Sagada is 3 hours away from Banaue. Tourists are encouraged to go here from Banaue during daytime as transportation might be quite difficult during the night. It was a great experience riding jeepneys full of people and sometimes you have to go on the top.

It is famous for the hanging coffins, rice terraces, lakes, and rich heritage and culture. It is also a popular spot for locals during the holy week, as a pilgrimage.

10. HUNDRED ISLANDS, PANGSINAN

This group of 123 islands is a popular destination in the Province of Pangasinan. Apart from enjoying the views, you can enjoy swimming, snorkeling and there is a pilgrimage island. Most of the tourist are locals and you can even enjoying overnight camping if you wish. This destination isn’t very popular for foreigners.

11. SUBIC, ZAMBALES

One of the most  adventurous  places in the country, Subic should be in your list of places to visit in the Philippines. They are famous for their Zoobic Safari, where you can experience the country’s very own African adventure. You just have to pay for the entrance fee and enjoy taking pictures of the animals.

If you are traveling with a kid, you should also check Ocean Adventure. Have fun with the kids watching dolphin and sea lion shows. You can also find an Oceanarium, or a big aquarium where you can watch marine animals in their habitat. Nightlife is great around Pier One for dinner and drink.

12. anilao, batangas.

Ah, one of our favorites! We loved our diving experience in this quiet barangay in Mabini, Batangas. It is just a 3-hour drive from Manila and is a famous spot for diving enthusiasts. You can also do snorkeling here, as the water is clean and clear. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a long week. The picture above is from Sepoc Island!

13. TAAL VOLCANO, BATANGAS

You will fall in love with the views from the viewing point in Taal Volcano, but you will fall in love more with the view from the Red Lava Viewing Point, where you can view the crater of the volcano. No worries if you do not like hiking. It was just an easy hike, that even a kid can do it.

Now if you love volcanoes and lakes, then it is recommended for you to visit Taal Volcano in  Tagaytay . It Is the 2 nd  most active volcano in the Philippines and a popular tourist spot in Batangas. It´s a must in the places to visit in the Philippines.

14. TAAL LAKE IN TAGAYTAY

You will appreciate Taal Lake better through Taal Lake Yacht Club. They offer boats for rent, and they could teach you how to sail on Taal’s beautiful lake. The club offers  kayak  for a solo ride or a couple, as well as  catamarans  having four and six passenger capacity.

Renting a boat that has a passenger capacity of one to four costs about  1500-2000 PHP  while bigger boats cost about  1900 PHP  for an hour, and  4200 PHP  for the whole day. For couples that enjoy tandem kayaks, they may rent it for  400 PHP per hour  and  1200 PHP  for the whole day.

If you’re feeling a little bit more brave you could also try paddle boards for  300 PHP  per hour and  900 PHP  for the whole day. Rest assured that these services come along with either/or life vests, instructors and drivers.

15. MAYON VOLCANO, BICOL

This volcano is one of the things the Philippines boasts. It is an active, perfect-cone volcano that is famous to tourists.

Aside from the Mayon Volcano, don’t forget to taste the delicacy of the Bicolanos- spicy foods. You can even find chili ice cream here! Would you dare to try it?

16. DONSOL, SORSOGON

And the last but not the least on our list of places to visit in Luzon- Donsol. This place is famous because it is known as the home of  Butanding  or the Whale Sharks.

When you visit Donsol, you shouldn’t miss diving and swimming with the whale sharks. Don’t worry because they are friendly creatures. Just don’t do anything that will stress or scare them.

17. NASUGBU

Visiting Nasugbu, Batangas is definitely underrated compared to the more popular destinations in the Philippines. It’s beauty is also incomparable. Nasugbu, Batangas is one of the most  beautiful places you can  visit in the Philippines .

Only a few hours from Manila, there are many things to do in Nasugbu. You can dive, swim, snorkel, do island hops and do amazing trips in Nasugbu,  Batangas .

18. EL NIDO, PALAWAN

This is on the top of our list despite of its actual location being on the southern part of Luzon. We just can’t help it because it is one of our favorite places in the world! We have been here a few times already and every single visit was unique, and we loved every single experience we had.

You will seriously forget all the problems you have once you step on the clear waters and white sand beaches of El Nido. It was once a quiet place north of Palawan but because of number of people visiting here, it was developed but still beautiful!

19. PUERTO PRINCESA, PALAWAN

Another gift from above, Puerto Princesa! It is the capital of Palawan and the most visited part of the province. Unlike El Nido, the capital is not famous for its beaches.

It is famous worldwide for its  UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Palawan Underground River or also known as Puerto-Princesa Subterranean River National Park. You will see unbelievable limestone formations here as you explore the underground river.

20. CORON, PALAWAN

Isn’t it obvious that we love Palawan so much? Another spot we recommend you include in the places to visit in the Philippines is Coron.

You will surely love diving and snorkeling here. Island hopping is also a famous activity in Coron that you shouldn’t miss. Lastly, if you have time don’t forget to hike Mount Tapyas. You have to hike for 20-30 minutes to get to the top and enjoy the picturesque views. It is surely worth it!

21. PORT BARTON

Start off at these affordable places to visit in Luzon, the largest of the three main island groups in the Philippines.

Where to go in the National Capital Region

1. city of manila.

You might be wondering where to go in Luzon first? When you come to the Philippines, you’ll most likely land in Manila, the country’s capital. To truly immerse in the local culture, head straight to downtown Manila. But let me warn you, it’s crowded, noisy, and fast-paced. You can get cheap hotels and ride a jeepney (public transport) to anywhere. Areas of interest are Intramuros, Rizal Park, Chinatown, and Divisoria. Many places also sell all kinds of food, from specialty restaurants to cheaper joints and street food. The area is rich in history and there are museums and attractions worth visiting. You’ll probably shell out anywhere from $1 to $2 for the entrance tickets. For those who want to enjoy some nightlife, the Malate and Roxas Boulevard areas come alive at night. If you’re already low on cash, take a stroll on the baywalk and enjoy the famous Manila Bay sunset for free. Hotels are plenty and you can take your pick starting at $16/night.

Places to visit in North Luzon

2. vigan, ilocos sur.

If you want to see how the Philippines looked like during the Spanish Colonial Era, pay a visit to this city north of Manila. The main attraction here is Calle Crisologo where the old houses and cobblestone streets remind you of what things looked like a hundred years ago. You can then head off to other sites of the city which include a visit to Baluarte Resort and Zoo, the Bantay Bell Tower, and the Pagburnayan (jar factory), to name a few. Most sites are free and there are plenty of good and inexpensive restaurants all over the city. Of course, you should try their local dishes particularly the Vigan longganisa (sausage) and empanada (pork pie), both selling for a little over $1. You can search for a range of hotels and inns to fit your needs with nightly rates that start at around $16.

3. Baguio City

When you can’t stand the Philippine summer heat, you can take a bus from Manila to Baguio for $10. This is one of the popular places to visit in North Luzon as it offers a range of cheap (or even free) attractions. The usual stopovers are the Mines View Park, The Baguio Cathedral, Burnham Park, The Philippine Military Academy, and Camp John Hay. Getting around the city is by jeep or local taxis. A wide variety of food choices is available all around and you can always find one that will suit your budget. Peak periods are the Christmas season, summer months, and February when the city gets really crowded and a bit expensive. If you time your visit during the off season, you can find lodging for as low as $15/night.

4. La Union

Surfing, anyone? This is what La Union is famous for, especially from the months of October to March when the waves are perfect for surfing particularly in Urbiztondo Beach. But the province offers more than its beaches. There are churches and temples, waterfalls, and good food. There’s also the chance that some beach party will be going on somewhere when you visit. Some resorts charge a minimal fee for surfers and they rent surfboards for around $4/hour. Visitors often choose San Fernando or San Juan as their base and just take public transport to where they want to go. From Manila, bus fare costs about $12 one way on a 4-5 hour trip. An overnight stay is good enough and you can find all sorts of accommodations – from the spartan beach tent at $14 or a hotel room at $19.

5. Bolinao, Pangasinan

They call this town the Jewel of the North because of its beautiful beaches and other natural wonders. Although the Province of Pangasinan has a lot of coastal towns, Bolinao is one of the few that have white sand beaches. Visitors can also visit several waterfalls and cave formations. Other attractions include the Cape Bolinao Lighthouse and the Balingasay River. If you want to take a 1.5-hour river cruise, the fee is about $30 with meals included. The town is known for its milkfish dishes so try one, specifically the charbroiled kind. If you want to stay overnight, there are some very reasonable accommodations available starting at $20/night. Bus fare from Manila to Bolinao is about $9.

6. clark freeport zone.

Clark in Pampanga is one of the popular places to visit in Central Luzon. This used to be a U.S. Military Base but has now become a traveller’s destination. The good news is, there’s an international airport right inside it so you can fly direct. Places of interest include Aqua Planet, a water theme park with $18 entrance fee; Nayong Pilipino, a site that features replicas of famous Philippine landmarks and sites which charges a $3 admission fee; Clark Museum; Paradise Ranch; and Air Force City. Clark also draws shoppers because of the many duty-free shops scattered all over the complex. Some guests also come in just to play golf or have fun in several casinos situated around the area. There are also a lot of weekend events happening in the place and one could be going on during your visit. You can get a hotel in the nearby Angeles City for as low as $14 and take public transport to get around Clark.

7. Subic Freeport Zone

This is another former American military installation that is now a popular tourist spot. Aside from its beaches and water activities, the rich flora and fauna also draw visitors. You can try to go on a mountain trail to check out the huge, old mangrove trees or cliff dive at El Kabayo Waterfalls for $1. Take a dip in one of the beaches and watch the beautiful sunset. At night, you can catch an event that usually takes place near the beach area. It is also home to dozens of duty-free shops where you can buy bargain goodies and hundreds of restaurants to grab a bite or a drink. It’s okay to stay in Olongapo City proper, outside the Freeport Zone where you can get a hotel room for as low as $10/night then take a jeepney to the Freeport Zone. Bus fare from Manila is just around $6.

8. Malolos, Bulacan

Malolos is probably one of the relatively undiscovered places in Luzon. By travelling just some 35 kilometres north of Manila, visitors can ‘go back in time’ to the Spanish era in Malolos, Bulacan. This historic town is rich in architecture, culture, and Philippine history. Its most famous landmark, Barasoain Church, is notable not just because of its religious significance but also because it is the site where the First Philippine Congress convened and where several Philippine Presidents took their oaths of office. A museum near the church provides visitors with relics and mementoes that link them to Philippine history. A walk along the streets, particularly in Pariancillo District, would give travellers a glimpse of the heritage houses that serve as a reminder of the affluence of the residents of this town during the Spanish period. Like any other memorable towns in the Philippines, Malolos also boasts of their own delicacies and cuisines but local tourists also come to try the many prawn and crab buffet restaurants here. Bus fare from Manila to this town is just under $2.

9. Puerto Galera

Are you more of a beach buff? Then you can head off to Puerto Galera, a resort island south of Manila. Food is not a problem because there are many places where you can eat or get a take-out. Of course, if want to enjoy some other activities like diving, boat rides, snorkelling, etc – they would cost extra. But if you just want to soak in the water or bask in the sun, they won’t cost you anything. The place also comes alive at night if you want to have a nightcap or two. The summer season is peak season here so if you want to come during those months, make your arrangements in advance. You’ll need to shell out around $10 for bus and ferry (one way) and a minimum of $15 for lodging

Places to visit in South Luzon

10. tagaytay city.

Tagaytay is definitely one of the go-to places to visit in South Luzon. It’s just around 65 kilometres from Manila, and is famous for its cool weather, food, and view of Taal Volcano. Locals come here to escape the hot weather of Metro Manila and grab some great bites while marvelling at the volcano that nestles serenely in the middle of the Taal Lake. The main highway bustles with all kinds of restaurants that offer everything from fine dining, fast food, specialty dishes, and street food. Try the burgers made out of mushrooms and the famous bulalo (beef marrow stew) while you’re there. The good thing about it is you can go in the morning, explore the city then go back to Manila in the evening. You can take a bus from Pasay City that will let you off in the centre of Tagaytay. From there, you can ride an electric tricycle or jeepney to wherever you want to go. If you want to stay overnight, you can find some cheap lodging for under $30.

11. Nasugbu, Batangas

After your Tagaytay City adventure, you can visit the next town which is Nasugbu. The place is famous for its beaches but you can also take a side trip to check out some scenic churches. If you’re up for it, you can take a guided mountain hike up Mt. Batulao to get a good view of the province and take some nice photographs. The hike would cost you around $33. Then, you can head off to the town proper by bus or jeep and enjoy the beach. A nice resort room would cost you around $29.

12. Corregidor Island

Do you want to see the spot where General Douglas MacArthur made his escape from the Japanese during World War II? This and other historically significant sites are in Corregidor Island. You can visit the war batteries all over the island that served as the last defense of the Americans against the Japanese during WW II and learn about the accounts before the fall of Bataan. Take a walk inside the Malinta Tunnel, a military installation soldiers built beneath a mountain that withstood thousands of pounds of Japanese bombs during the war. You can get a pre-packaged day tour for around $72 that would include ferry transfers from Manila, a guided tour around the island, entrance fees, buffet lunch, and souvenirs. After that, all you need to do is enjoy the island.

13. Antipolo City, Rizal

Located east of Manila, Antipolo is popular among local travellers because of its high terrain that offers a view of Metro Manila, its attractions, and the local delicacies that abound in the area. You can allocate a full day for this city to visit the many offerings it has. Places of interest are the Hinulugang Taktak waterfalls, the Antipolo Cathedral, the Pinto Art Museum, and Mount Purro Nature Reserve. Antipolo is now home to several malls and hundreds of restaurants so you can take your pick where to eat but be sure to look for those specialty restaurants. Antipolo City is very accessible by public transport from many parts of Metro Manila. Fares in public vans range from $1 to $2 one way.

14. Calamba, Laguna

Calamba City is one of the many historical places in the country that is very near Metro Manila. Bus fare from Manila to Calamba would just be around $2 to $4, depending on the type of bus you choose. Once in the city, you can take the jeepney or tricycle to go around and explore the place. Visit the Rizal Shrine and learn about the country’s national hero Dr. Jose Rizal. Take a tour around the old churches, parks and Mt. Makiling. Stay in Pansol area and enjoy the natural hot springs that come from Mt. Makiling for relaxation and for the water’s healing properties. Of course, one should also try the variety of food that the place offers, especially their famous Buko (coconut) Pie and other sweet delicacies. If you come during summer, you will also find many vendors selling local fruits in season such as mangoes and watermelons. For lodging, you can find a place to stay for as low as $20/night.

These are just some of the many affordable places to visit in Luzon. If you don’t mind sacrificing a few comforts here and there once in a while, a small budget can get you places and give you many beautiful memories of the Philippines’ largest island group.

The northern region of the Philippines is a popular summer destination because of the cool weather of the mountains, especially in Baguio and the Benguet area. You’ll get to see and trek beautiful mountains and the distinct culture of the locals. However, trekking isn’t the only activity you can do here; there are plenty of beaches for those who want to get some vitamin sea.

If you want to go surfing, La Union is the place to be. The province has a number of surf schools, hip restaurants, and a distinct surfing vibe. One of the places to test your mettle on the waves is Urbiztondo Beach. The waves are at a level where it is good for both beginners and experienced surfers. There are a number of instructors and board rentals (if you don’t have your own) to choose from. After surfing, you can relax on the beach, get a cold drink, or visit other nearby attractions such as Tangadan Falls.

Patar Beach

Pangasinan has a number of beach destinations in different municipalities, making the province one of the top choices of a northern Luzon road trip. Play a few games of volleyball or ultimate Frisbee to pass the time, wade in the waters, or just bum around during your vacation.

Bolinao and Hundred Islands are often the first two destinations in mind when thinking of a Pangasinan getaway. However, the province has a lot more to offer when it comes to beaches. One of the places to visit includes Tambobong Beach in Dasol. Some of the activities you can do during your visit include swimming, snorkeling, getting a tan, or visiting the nearby Colibra Island. From Alaminos, take a bus bound for Sta. Cruz in Zambales. The bus will pass the town of Dasol, so tell the conductor or the driver that you will alight there.

9 Top Destinations in Central Luzon, Philippines

Although it is known as ‘the rice granary of the Philippines’, Central Luzon has much more to it than just endless plains of rice fields as magnificent mountains peaks are to be found alongside twinkling waterfalls, beautiful beaches and a wonderfully wild and rugged coastline.

Located just to the north of Manila, its diverse landscapes are home to a whole host of different peoples and cultures with each of the seven provinces that make up Central Luzon having its own unique look, feel and identity.

With lots of wonderful old colonial-era architecture to discover, delicious local cuisine to sample and fun-filled festivals to take part in; this delightful region of the Philippines is well worth exploring if you have the chance.

9. Ditumabo Mother Falls [SEE MAP]

Majestic to behold, Ditumabo Falls gushes forth from up high. The dazzling white of its waters contrasts stunningly against the lush green of the rainforest that lies to either side of it. The impressive waterfall is also known as Mother Falls since it is the largest and grandest in the area.

While the waterfall only reaches about 15 meters in height, its scenic setting makes it a very picturesque place to spend some time, although it can get crowded during the weekends. After hiking for an hour through the jungle to reach the falls, nothing beats bathing in the clear pool that lies at its foot and basking in the fantastic scenery all around you.

8. Minalungao National Park [SEE MAP]

Established in 1967 to protect and preserve the scenic Penaranda River and its surroundings, Minalungao National Park is home to some of the most beautiful and pristine nature in Central Luzon.

As it is promoted as an ecotourism destination by the local government, it should come as no surprise to learn that the national park has a wealth of fantastic outdoor activities for you to enjoy, with hiking, rock climbing, and ziplining all on offer.

In addition to this, you can also go swimming or kayaking on the river – or even rafting and cliff diving if you feel brave enough. While its range of outdoor activities will certainly keep you entertained for days, the scenery on show is just as arresting; the emerald waters of the river are beautifully framed by glimmering limestone formations looming above it.

7. Magalawa Island [SEE MAP]

Lying just off the west coast of Central Luzon and surrounded by the glittering waters of the China Sea, Magalawa Island is a fantastic place to head to if you’re looking for a quiet getaway.

With beautiful white sand beaches lining its shores and gently swaying palm trees wherever you look, Magalawa certainly paints a pretty picture. There’s nothing better than lounging on the beach all day while taking in the stunning scenery.

As it is still quite undeveloped, the island habitat is very untouched. As such, it is ideal for nature lovers, while outdoor enthusiasts will also rejoice at the amazing rafting and snorkeling on offer. In addition to this, taking a scenic boat trip around the island and surrounding waters is simply a must. This is particularly magical at sunset when the waves shimmer and sparkle before your eyes.

6. Monasterio de Tarlac [SEE MAP]

Located atop the appropriately named Mount Resurrection, this incredible monastery is a very popular destination with both locals and tourists alike. Its majestic Jesus Christ statue is the undoubted highlight of what’s on show.

Towering to a height of 30 feet, Christ’s outstretched arms welcome visitors to the Monasterio de Tarlac. From the peaceful gardens surrounding the church, you have some lovely views out over the picturesque Zambales Mountain Range.

While its scenic setting and splendid statue are what many people come for, the interior of the monastery houses a very important relic which is believed to be a remnant of the cross upon which Christ was crucified.

Although the fragment of the True Cross is not all that much to look at, lots of pilgrims come here and venerate the holy site. The monastery’s peaceful mountaintop setting certainly makes it the perfect place for some quiet reflection.

5. Dingalan [SEE MAP]

Lying alongside a delightful bay of the same name, Dingalan is a breathtakingly beautiful part of Central Luzon to visit. The municipality is awash with stunning scenery and landscapes for you to explore. While its wild and rugged coastline is exhilarating to surf or swim along, its interior is equally enchanting. Among its towering mountains, you can find cavernous caves, gushing rivers, and sparkling waterfalls.

As such, it really is an outdoor lover’s dream, and there are loads of lovely beaches to kick back and relax on if you simply want to bask in the magnificent scenery. While there isn’t all that much for you to do in town, its delightful setting amongst the Sierra Madre Mountains and the abundance of nature nearby means that you’ll never get bored.

With lots of interesting historical sights to explore and a wealth of excellent woodland paths and coastal trails for you to hike or cycle along, Corregidor Island is well worth visiting when in Central Luzon.

Due to its strategic location at the entrance to Manila Bay, Corregidor has long been fortified. Many people now visit to see Fort Mills and the various anti-aircraft artillery batteries that were erected to protect the Philippines’s capital during the Second World War.

While the crumbling fortifications, memorials, and WWII sights are what make Corregidor Island one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, its spectacular scenery is also well worth checking out.

3. Pilar [SEE MAP]

Although there is not all that much to see or do in the town of Pilar, there are some interesting historic sights to discover. The municipality itself lies not far away from Bataan National Park and Mount Mariveles, both of which boast some astounding natural wonders.

The main attraction in Pilar is the Mount Samat National Shrine, which was built to honor and remember the brave Filipino and American soldiers who fought in the Second World War. The enormous cross certainly does look impressive.

Besides that, the Flaming Sword shrine and Our Lady of the Pilar Parish Church are the main noteworthy sites to see in town, while the small fishing villages and ports along the coast are also well worth a visit; they are very picturesque with a laidback feel.

2. Mount Pinatubo [SEE MAP]

Simply awe-inspiring to look at, Mount Pinatubo is a must-visit when in Central Luzon. While the majestic mountains and volcanoes that dot the landscape are breathtakingly beautiful, it is the glimmering crater lake that lies at their heart that is the undoubted star of the show.

Hemmed in by towering peaks, the turquoise waters shimmer and gleam beneath the midday sun, and the color of the lake remarkably changes throughout the year, depending on the season.

Formed over millennia, the volcanic region makes for some beautiful hiking. Lots of mountaineers come to Mount Pinatubo to climb its various peaks. One of the most spectacular natural sights in the Philippines, Mount Pinatubo will set your heart racing.

Lined by beautiful palm trees and overlooked by majestic mountains off in the distance, the small town of Baler is a very laidback place to visit, and the scenery on show is drop-dead gorgeous.

Famed for its white sand beach and surfing spots that appeared in the iconic film Apocalypse Now, Baler truly is blessed when it comes to its scenic setting. If you’re up for some exploring, the surrounding area has some wonderful beaches and waterfalls.

Despite being founded all the way back in 1609, there aren’t any historical or cultural attractions of note in the town. Most people simply come to kick back and relax on the beach or take to the waves and surf all day in the sun; it’s the perfect destination for sun-worshippers and beach lovers.
