Popular tourist attractions from Mymensingh district

Mymensingh is one of the largest and oldest districts in Bangladesh. Mymensingh city is more than 200 years old, and was constituted by the British East India Company during 1787. Earlier this district was known as Nasirabad . Initially the current districts Tangail , Jamalpur and Sherpur were part of Mymensingh which was known as Greater Mymensingh . River Brahmaputra is the major river from Mymensingh. This district is famous for its Nakshikatha . This district gave birth to numerous notable persons in the past. Mymensingh has a high potential to become a popular tourist destination as it has fast communication with Dhaka through train and bus. Yet this district never got that much attention from the local tourists of Bangladesh. Below are the few tourist attractions from Mymensingh district based on my travel experience.

muktagachha jomidar bari, mymensingh tourist attraction

#1 Muktagachha Jomidar Bari

Mymensingh has several old  Jamidar Bari  to visit and  Muktagachha Jomidar Bari  is one of those. This old building is located at the heart of the Muktagachha town. It covers a vast area, though most of the structures are in very poor condition. Few things were stolen by the locals, and others are just dilapidated for the lack of care.  It is believed (or fact) that the Jomidars were actually came from the Natore or Bogura of the North Bengal.

Alexander castle, mymensingh tourist attraction

#2 Alexander Castle

Alexander castle is an old edifice that was mostly built using iron and wood. It was built during 1879 by the  Moharaj Surjo Kanta Acharya Chodhury . As most of the portions were built using Iron, local people used to call this as Lohar Kuthi (means house of iron). The whole building is placed over a high plinth, probably to avoid the flood from the nearby mighty Brahmaputra river. It is currently being used as a library of the Teacher’s Training College.

Shoshi Lodge. Mymensingh tourist attraction

#3 Shoshi Lodge

Shoshi lodge  is a luxurious  Jamidar house located in the Mymensingh town. Initially (approximately 150 years back) this massive house was built by the Jomidar SurjoKanto  of Muktagachha . He had an adopted son named  ShoshiKanto . The king named this lodge after him. After the initial construction, this  Shoshi lodge  was dislodged by the  massive earthquake of 1897 . Later  ShoshiKanto  himself installed the current structure at the same place. During that process he imported the raw materials from Italy and the other parts of Europe.

Gouripur lodge, Mymensingh tourist attraction

#4 Gouripur Lodge

Gouripur Lodge  is an antique edifice from the Mymensingh town. It is unknown about the built date and the purpose for which it was built. It was made using iron, tin and wood. Structure of the building is similar to the other Jamindar mansions of that period. It was built by  Brozendra Kishor Ray Chowdhury . This archaic  Gouripur lodge  is located near the main Mymensingh town. One could go using a rickshaw easily. It is near the  Boro Bazar .

Bangladesh Agricultural University

#5 Bangladesh Agricultural University

Bangladesh Agricultural University (in short BAU) was established during 1961. This university is devoted to agricultural education and research. This is the best university in Bangladesh for this category, and also one of the best from Asia. During the visit to Mymensingh, anyone could spend an hour around the university area, especially during the weekends.

Mymensingh botanical garen

#6 Botanical Garden

Bangladesh Agricultural University Botanic Garden is located beside the University (eastern side). It was founded during 1962 and currently it is under the Department of Crop Botany. This is a small garden but rich with plenty of flora, especially during Spring. It is a great place to get familiar with different common and uncommon flowering plants.

Brahmaputra river, mymensingh tourist attraction

#7 Brahmaputra river and the bridge

The mighty river  Brahmaputra  entered into Bangladesh through the northern part of the country. Earlier the river was passing through the  Jamalpur  and  Mymensingh  district before falling into the  Meghna river . During  1762 an 8.8 magnitude earthquake  uplifted the tectonic plate of  Madhupur tract  of Bangladesh. Which forced the river to channel its flow through  Jamalpur  and  Tangail  district.

biriyani press club, mymensingh

#8 Biriyani of press club

The Biriyani of Press Club Canteen near the Ganginar Par of Mymensingh town is famous for its taste and historical value. This canteen is located near the Ganginar Par , just ask anyone around you to show you. This canteen is on the second floor. They serve the Biriyani with chicken which is very tasty in my opinion.

#9 Muktagachha Monda

Muktagachh a is famous for the best Monda from Bangladesh. You could buy the Monda after visiting the Muktagachha Jomidar Bari . The sweet shop is near that area. Currently the shop is owned by the 5th generation sweet maker of the local Pal family. The sweet was first made in 1824 by Ram Gopal Pal and he offered it to the Jamidar Surjokanto .

There are several ways anyone could go to Mymensingh district. It is connected to Dhaka through train and bus. A train takes around 3 hours from Komlapur train station . But the train could make a delay to start. Trains for Jamalpur also pass through this district. You could take those trains as well. All together the trains are Teesta , Jamuna , Brahmaputra , and Agnibeena express . Several quality bus services run between the Mohakhali bus terminal and the Mymensingh . You can take Ena Poribohon , Shoukhin , etc. It takes 4-5 hours for the journey depending upon the traffic condition.

Where to stay

It is possible to make a day trip from Dhaka by leaving early in the morning and returning late at night. That’s why it might not require you to stay in the town. But if anyone is making a trip for more than a day they could easily find excellent accommodation in the town. This district is popular for medical tourism amongst the people from the north central part of the country. That’s why it has an established accommodation facility already. Hotel Silver Castle, Hotel Le Marian, Hotel Amir International, etc are a few popular names from the town.

tourist spot near mymensingh

From the Brahmaputra River and hand-crafted Nakshikantha to the eponymous Maimansingha Gitika, Mymensingh has a rich history and magnificent heritage. In its more than two centuries of existence as a district, this area has been home to numerous historical figures. With its convenient rail and bus connections to Dhaka, Mymensingh has all the makings of a bustling tourism hub. So, here is a list of places you can visit in Mymensingh on your next trip.

Muktagacha Zamindar Bari

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel.

Found right in the middle of the town of Muktagacha, this is a great place to see a site frozen in time. Even though the majority of the buildings are in a deteriorating state, it covers a relatively large area. It is a widely held belief that the jamindar originally came from North Bengal.

From Mymensingh's town hall, you can take an auto-rickshaw or a local bus for Tk 30 and reach Muktagacha in 30 minutes.

Muktagacha monda sweet shop

The most incredible monda, a traditional dessert, can be found in Muktagacha. The original sweet was created by Ram Gopal Pal in 1824, who presented it to Jamindar Surya Kanta. The current owner, a member of the local Pal family, is the fifth generation to work in the family business, so rest assured the quality of the monda will leave your tastebuds singing!

The hills of Garo and Meghalaya surround Birishiri, and the Someshwari and Kangsho rivers flow through the area. In winter, Birishiri's white sands and shallow blue water provide a picturesque setting among the river's sandstone banks and verdant hills. Birishiri also has friendly Garo people and a rich cultural history.

If you can rent a car in Mymensingh, the drive to Birishiri will take around 2 hours, as you pass through endless greenery along the way.

tourist spot near mymensingh

Lohar Kuthi, established by Maharaja Surya Kanta Acharya Chowdhury, is the historical name for Alexander Castle since it was once primarily an iron structure. The whole castle is remarkably raised on a tall pedestal to protect it from the great Brahmaputra River, which flows nearby. Gardens surround the castle, which was formerly flanked by two shattered Greek sculptures. It is presently serving as the Teacher's College library, and eight rooms on the lower-level store around 15,000 books.

With its beautiful scenery and the sounds of nature, Moyna Dip is bound to leave people captivated. Calmness encompasses the island as does the Brahmaputra River's crystal-clear waters. The surrounding lemon grove is also a visually and aromatically stunning addition to the landscape. It is said that an anti-British movement activist Moyna Mia formerly lived here and enjoyed spending time playing the flute in the shade of a tree. Riverside communities, boat rides, and local fauna will provide a gorgeous backdrop to spend your time in this peaceful place.

How to get there…

Mymensingh is accessible in numerous ways. It has rail and transport links to Dhaka. Direct trains from Kamalapur Railway Station can take 3-4 hours. Additionally, trains to Jamalpur also travel through this area so you could take one of those as well. The trains include Jamuna, Brahmaputra, Teesta, and Agnibina Express. Buses go from the Mohakhali Station to Mymensingh; the road journey generally takes 4-5 hours, depending on the traffic.

You may take a day trip from Dhaka if you leave first thing in the morning and come back late at night. For those staying more than a day though, the city has plenty of accommodation options. Several well-known hotels in the area include the Hotel Silver Castle, Hotel Le Marian, Hotel Amir International, etc.

Tourist hot spots from Venice to a town near Mount Fuji are taking drastic measures to cope with overtourism

  • A barrier has been erected at a popular Instagram spot in Fujikawaguchiko to curb overtourism.
  • Locals complained that tourists had caused disruptions, including overcrowding and traffic issues.
  • Other popular spots like Venice and a small Swiss alpine town are considering or trialing tourist fees.

Insider Today

Overtourism has been affecting cities, towns, and picturesque spots worldwide, and some local officials are starting to take measures to stop it.

In Venice, a tourist fee is being trialed to curb the problem, and other cities are beginning to take note. Residents in a village on Menorca, an island off Spain, have imposed restrictions on visiting hours for tourists and even threatened to cut tourist access to the village altogether, per The Guardian .

This week, a large mesh barrier was erected in Fujikawaguchiko , a town in Japan with a view of Mount Fuji that has become a popular spot to snap the country's largest peak. The plans were drawn up as locals began complaining of hoards of badly behaved tourists coming to the area.

"It's regrettable we have to do this, because of some tourists who can't respect rules," a town official told Agence France-Presse .

The official told the outlet that tourists had caused disruption to the local area, including overcrowding the area, leaving behind trash, and ignoring traffic regulations.

Tourists are flocking to a specific spot near a Lawson convenience store.

The spot was seen as "very Japanese," the official explained, as the convenience store is unique to Japan and has a view of Mount Fuji right behind it.

"Social media has a big part to play in this restriction, and we're seeing an increase in this kind of social-driven, hyper-local overtourism," Huw Owen, cofounder of tailor-made holiday platform TravelLocal, which offers trips to Japan, said in a statement shared with Business Insider.

"This is essentially where tourists flock to a specific location to get the perfect shot for their social channels and, unfortunately, in some cases, act irresponsibly and without respect for the local community and environment," he added.

But Fujikawaguchiko isn't the only place that's putting measures in place to combat overtourism.

A tourist fee is being trialed in Venice

Over in Venice, a controversial tourist fee has been implemented. Officials in the Italian city launched a trial 5 euro fee — about $5.40 — for day-trippers during its peak travel season.

Related stories

The fee will apply on 29 peak days between April and July. Locals and people staying overnight in hotels don't need to pay the fee to enter the ticketed area, but they still need to book online, which has been a point of contention.

Even though the fee is meant to make the city more liveable for residents, many are unhappy about it.

Some locals protested, holding banners saying: "No to ticket, yes to houses and services for all," and others even clashed with police, CNN reported.

Some said that the fee is too small to deter the crowds and that it violated the principle of freedom of movement.

A picturesque tourist town in Switzerland is also considering a tourist fee

Lauterbrunnen, a picturesque mountain town in the Swiss Alps, has also become a tourist hot spot.

But the influx of tourists has meant that the population of just 2,400 has to face congested roads and public transport, higher rents, and increased pollution, Euro News reported.

To cope, the mayor is considering introducing a fee of between 5 and 10 Swiss Franc ($5.50 to $11) for visitors arriving by car, the outlet added, citing Swiss publication Berner Zeitung.

"The exception would be guests who have booked an offer such as a hotel or an excursion or who arrive by public transport," the mayor, Karl Näpflin said, per Swiss Info .

The Mayor of Como is also considering a tourist fee

Lake Como has been going viral on TikTok, with tourists sharing videos of the packed trains heading to the lake.

One TikTok has racked up 3.3 million views, showing a packed train heading to Lake Como. While the person who posted the video said in that caption that it was "totally worth it," people in the comments had other ideas.

"Imagine me, a local, taking that train everyday to go to uni and come back home it's a NIGHTMARE," one user commented.

Another TikTok with 5.3 million views showed a similar phenomenon. In the video, people are seen spilling off the train platform and sitting on the side of the train tracks while waiting for the train from Varenna (Lake Como) to Milan.

The city's mayor, Alessandro Rapinese, told The Times that on busy summer days, the city can attract 300,000 visitors.

He said that it's led to them considering a Venice-style tourist tax on visitors, and he plans to start charging €50 ($54) for each private coach that arrives.

"You have no idea how difficult it is to be mayor when you are fighting tourism," he told the outlet.

The best hidden gems to visit in summer tourist hot spots, from someone who's been to every European country

  • Lee Abbamonte is a banker turned travel blogger who has visited every country in Europe.
  • He calls Spain, Italy, France, and Greece Europe's "Big Four" because of how popular they are.
  • If you're visiting one of the "Big Four," here are Abbamonte's off-the-beaten-path tips.

Traveling to Europe this summer? If so, we'll take a wild guess that you're visiting either Spain, Italy, France, or Greece.

These countries, nearly all of which are in the southern or Mediterranean regions, are what travel blogger Lee Abbamonte dubs Europe's "Big Four" because of their popularity among American tourists .

Abbamonte, 45, knows a thing or two about travel. He's not only visited every state in the US but every country in the world, as well as the North and South Poles.

Across the pond, Abbamonte prefers exploring underrated European countries , but he gets why people gravitate to the "Big Four."

"If you don't like it, you're the problem," he said. "They're all good."

Still, he's a fan of venturing off the beaten path.

Here, Abbamonte shares a few alternatives to popular tourist hot spots that anyone visiting Spain, Italy, France, and Greece should check out.

In Spain, forget Barcelona or Madrid and explore the cliffside city of Ronda

"Everyone knows Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Ibiza, Majorca," Abbamonte said. But not many Americans are familiar with the historic city of Ronda, perched atop a deep rocky gorge covered in lush greenery in the Andalucia region.

"If you're in Marbella, or if you're in Sevilla or Gibraltar, you can go out there and check out this awesome little town," Abbamonte said.

He also can't speak highly enough of northern Spain/Spain's northern coast. One highlight is the seaside town of A Coruña, which is close to the Camino de Santiago, a network of pilgrimage routes leading to a holy site in the city of Santiago de Compostela.

"I've done a lot of road trips around the north of Spain," Abbamonte said. "It's just an awesome little slice of Europe that nobody ever goes to."

If you're planning to island-hop in Greece, Abbamonte has recommendations that aren't Mykonos or Santorini

Mykonos and Santorini are two of the most well-known islands in Greece. Naturally, they're also two of the most overcrowded.

People familiar with Greece, like Abbamonte, often advise against visiting Mykonos and Santorini in favor of smaller islands that are quieter but just as beautiful, such as Aegina, Poros, and Hydra.

Abbamonte said Hydra, in particular, is worth seeing.

"There are no cars, and it's just goats and donkeys and walking. It's a very cool place to go."

On the mainland, he'd also advise stopping by Meteora in Thessaly, known for its "otherworldly" monasteries built atop towering rock formations.

In Italy, there are places just as beautiful as Lake Como and Florence that are far less crowded

According to Abbamonte, "With Italy, you can just throw a dart at a map, and you're in the coolest place you've ever been to."

Even so, some of Abbamonte's favorite spots in Italy don't get the love he believes they deserve. In the region of Tuscany for example, he says people tend to prioritize Florence, Pisa, or Siena.

All three are definitely worth seeing at least once, Abbamonte said, but he'd also recommend exploring smaller villages nestled between Tuscany's rolling hills, such as San Gimignano, Montalcino, and Montepulciano — all known for their endless vineyards and wines.

"Those are actually really awesome little villages and well worth checking out," he said.

Up in the north, Abbamonte said he'd skip Lake Como for any of the other Italian lakes close to the Dolomite mountains.

"It's my favorite place to road trip, probably, in all of Europe," he said.

Vacation like a local in France and visit Biarritz instead of Paris or Nice

Abbamonte cited Paris and Nice as examples of some of France's best-known vacation spots.

However, he said they are mostly hot spots for tourists rather than French locals, who tend to vacation in places "completely overlooked" by outsiders.

One of his favorites is Biarritz, a seaside hub known for its surfing culture in the Basque region of France. It's north of San Sebastian, a coastal Spanish city popular with tourists that is about a half-hour drive from the French border.

"Everyone knows San Sebastian now. Not a lot of people know Biarritz except for French people," he said. "But that's why I like it because it has a real, local kind of old money, Grace Kelly feel."

Other spots in France that he recommends checking out are the medieval town of Saint Paul De Vence on the French Riviera , beloved by generations of artists and poets, and the riverside city of Avignon in the southeast, one of his "favorite towns in all of Europe."

Correction: June 4, 2024 — An earlier version of this story misstated the location of A Coruña. It's in northwestern Spain, not in Spain's Basque region. The story also misstated the location of Monte Carlo, which is in Monaco, not France.
