Transatlantic Cruises

Experience the finest cities along the grand Atlantic’s coasts and the intriguing ports-of-call along the way with a Transatlantic cruise.

Truly cherish your time onboard one of the industry’s best cruise ships as you let the ocean breeze carry you along. Gaze upon the rippling waters of the Atlantic Ocean as you await each carefully chosen port city’s experience. You may spend some time in Caribbean islands, the Western Mediterranean or Northern Europe during your cruise, each bringing something new and exciting to your vacation.

A Transatlantic cruise is one trip you won’t soon forget.

Things to Do on a Transatlantic Cruise

A transatlantic cruise is a great way to cross the pond without flying. It’s a leisurely experience, but it’s also connected to the past. Get a sense of the golden age of cruising, when it wasn't just a vacation, but a journey to a new life. Many transatlantic cruises travel from London to New York or vice versa, but you can also find transatlantic sailings that start anywhere along the West Coast of Europe and sail to several ports along the East Coast of the Americas. Featured below are several of our favorite things to do when taking advantage of a transatlantic cruise:

Buckingham Palace in London, England

  • Experience the pomp and circumstance of the world’s most famed monarchies with a visit to Buckingham Palace in London. You can tour the Queen’s palace, and make sure to catch the changing of the guards.
  • Have a night on the town and attend a show on Broadway in New York City. See a thoughtful play or a musical that leaves you quoting lines and singing the tunes for weeks.

Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • Visit Tijuca National Park and take the train to the top of Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro to see the iconic Christ the Redeemer Statue, which is 125 feet tall.
  • Indulge in the onboard activities of your ship. On a transatlantic cruise, your ship is a major attraction in and of itself. Be sure to sign up for an enrichment class, head to the spa for some relaxation and hit the dance floor at night, perhaps after dinner and a show.

La Sagrada Familia Church in Barcelona, Spain

  • Hit the beach – South Beach, to be specific. This stretch of sand and shore in Miami is famous for attracting beachgoers the world over.
  • Take a tour of the fanciful architecture of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona. The Spanish architect has several fascinating buildings in the city, including La Sagrada Familia Church and La Pedrera.

Transatlantic Cruises

The best of classic sailing.

Experience the golden age of ocean travel on a Transatlantic cruise with Princess®. Get to know the tranquility of the sea, and meet the cultures and stories that lie ashore. Choose from itineraries that take you to the castles of the British Isles, the beaches of the Mediterranean and the fjords of Scandinavia and Russia. Feel the thrill of classic cruising while basking in the comfort of home on a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean.

Transatlantic Cruise Departure Ports

Our departure ports are as iconic as the destinations on each itinerary. Arrive a few days early to your Transatlantic cruise or spend time upon arrival exploring the wonders that lie within these cities.

  • Ft. Lauderdale
  • London (Southampton)

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.

Fort Lauderdale has long been known for its white-sand beaches, but has recently become famous for its blossoming art scene — among many other things. Before your Transatlantic cruise, browse galleries on Las Olas Boulevard. Stop for a drink at one of the waterfront cafes. Or ride through the Everglades, a 1.5-million acre UNESCO World Heritage Site, and look for the wildlife that call these lands home.

From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.

The cosmopolitan center of America, New York City, is waiting to be explored. On a Transatlantic cruise with Princess, arrive early to spend the day shopping in SoHo, and then stroll through the Museum of Modern Art. Sail past the Statue of Liberty, walk through Central Park and snap a photo in front of the 238 billboards in Times Square. Or ascend the Empire State building and take in sweeping views of it all from 1,250 feet above.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Transatlantic and Transpacific Cruises

CRUISE FROM CONTINENT TO CONTINENT

Transatlantic & transpacific cruises.

Reposition your view of paradise with a transatlantic or transpacific cruise.

Have you ever thought of traversing an entire ocean from coast to coast? You can go further than you ever thought possible on a transatlantic cruise, crossing the waves between the U.S. and Europe. Departing from Florida, Barcelona, Southampton and Copenhagen, these cruises include both tropical and cultural island stops, in ports such as the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Greenland and Iceland. Meanwhile, transpacific cruises go from Sydney to the U.S., with plenty of white-sand-beach-filled South Pacific ports in between. Take in sweeping views of the Pacific while stopping in exotic ports to see the secluded beaches of Vanuatu or the volcanic vistas of Hawaii.

PREPARE FOR THE PACIFIC

From Sydney to either  Honolulu  or Seattle, be prepared to cross hemispheres and visit the best (and most beautiful) South Pacific islands.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The Best Time to Cruise

For transatlantic cruises, the best time to set sail is either spring and fall, when the weather is still warm but prices are more affordable. However, transpacific cruises are recommended during the Southern Hemisphere's winter, from May to October. This is because summer is the South Pacific's cyclone season.

Remember to pack for all weather conditions, as you will have warm summery port days, as well as cooler nights at sea. On transpacific cruises, you'll also cross hemispheres, so may need clothing for summer and winter conditions if cruising from  Sydney  to  Seattle

With so many days at sea, try something new onboard, but also bring your own entertainment — whether that's an e-reader or a good book.

FOR THE FOODIE'S CROSS-COUNTRY CUISINES

From Australia to the Azores, transatlantic and transpacific cruises expose you to several cuisines, including Caribbean, American and Pacific Islander. From fast-food favorites to rice-based comfort food, here are a few must-try foods.

Meat Pies from Australia

AUSSIE MEAT PIES

Found in bakeries and convenience stores, Australians love their savory meat pies. Visit the iconic Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Sydney and tuck into one of their flaky pies filled with curried beef or chicken with a side of classic mushy peas.

Traditional Lunch from Hawaii

PILE UP YOUR PLATE

Plate lunches are very popular in Hawaii, and traditionally feature scoops of white rice, macaroni salad and a meat-based entree like succulent kalua pig or a lau lau pork, with a smoky taste from its preparation in an underground oven.

Traditional Cuban Sandwich from Florida

FLORIDIAN FOOD

Tuck into some popular Floridian dishes before your transatlantic cruise departs. Savor a salty, satisfying Cuban sandwich piled high with pork and pickles. Try a Bahamian-inspired conch fritter, and key lime pie for dessert.

Related Ports

In the South Pacific, paradisal ports include Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia and New Caledonia. In the Caribbean, choose from ports like the Bahamas, Barbados, Haiti and Antigua. Or spend more time in the great cities of Europe: Pop from Amsterdam over to the fjords of Norway or the natural volcanic spas of Reykjavik, Iceland.

Transatlantic Cruises

Compare here Transatlantic Repositioning Cruises 2024-2025 itineraries of one-way Cunard Transatlantic crossings , and also the segmented Trans-Atlantic crossings between  South America and Europe , Transatlantic round-trip cruises from UK ports  and North Atlantic cruises between New York and Europe/UK as dates, routes and prices per person.

Transatlantic cruise deals are usually offered as seasoned discounted specials when a decent number of passenger ships relocate (with one-way itineraries) for their next (Summer or Winter) season from one operational region to another.

Transatlantic Repositioning Cruises

Absolutely all Transatlantic cruises feature cheap travel deals on low-priced sailings with a longer than usual sea intensive itinerary. It means lots of sea days and few call ports.

When you choose your “best” from all departures as dates and ports, just follow the line-links from the table for the exact itinerary and suggestive prices.

At our line-pages, we’ll show you also the lowest ticket prices to compare ships in general. But know that prices are indicative and subject to change (lowest rates per person, based on double occupancy).

This link is to an article titled “Transatlantic Crossings” at Wikipedia .

Transatlantic cruise ships, Atlantic crossing routes

  • Trans-Atlantic cruises between Europe and USA or South America – best availability on cruises Florida to Mediterranean (some visiting Azores, Canary Islands) and from Florida to UK (often with Bermuda), and the reverse from Europe (UK/Mediterranean) to Florida. Some really cheap deals are offered on cruises departing from Italy to South America (Brazil and Argentina) operated in late Fall and some times early Winter, and the reverse (in early Spring) from South America to Europe.
  • North Atlantic cruises to Canada from Northern Europe in early Fall (often visiting Iceland and Greenland) when ships move to sail on Fall Foliage cruises in New England.
  • there’s a limited (but still some) choice if you’re looking for cruise ships departing from the UK to the Caribbean or New York (Fall) and the reverse from the Caribbean to UK (Spring).
  • and the most expensive, but also in this category – Around The World cruise ships departing from Europe (the UK mostly) with their first/last segments offering a Trans-Atlantic cruise crossing.

Repositioning Transatlantic Cruises 2024-2025 schedule

The following table shows all major lines’ ships with Transatlantic cruise crossing itineraries in 2024 and 2025. To see detailed itinerary information, just follow our line-links from the table or at the top page right. After this table, you will find a separate schedule for roundtrip Transatlantic ship crossings.

Know that all (yours included) Transatlantic cruises as deals are in the “very cheap travel” category. Generally, Transatlantic crossings on cruise ships feature some of the cheapest travel prices as per-day rates. The only inconvenience is that these offers are very limited as to the number of ships (major cruise lines with regular Transatlantic ship repositioning).

Other cons are the limited number of departure dates, few departure port choices, not to forget the limited number of ports of call. Last-minute Transatlantic cruise deals offer the best possible prices. Still, some bonus perks may change your mind. Among those are the free cabin upgrades, free onboard credit, and special sea day activities. Sometimes, even unlimited beverage packages are included in the deals. As to the guaranteed availability and stateroom choices, early booking is highly recommended.

We wish you the best of luck and super fun on your cheap Transatlantic crossings! One-way or round-trip, these are unique travel deals on the always pleasantly cheap Transatlantic cruise ships – enjoy them!

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.

AAA Verified Reviews for "Queen Mary 2" ship ( 8 )

7 Night Eastbound Transatlantic Crossing Cruise

7 Nights - Queen Mary 2 - Departed from New York - Brooklyn, New York

Being early May there was little sun-bathing on the wrap around deck 7. The first three days were rainy, sometimes windy, but the rain stopped on day four and there were even peaks of sun before the end. Inside was very different. The decor of the ship was elegant without being excessively so. Thirteen decks with four sets of stairways and elevators. Lookouts on at least two floors fore and aft. Many options for meals--self service inside on deck 7, and many seat and be served restaurants. The lounges all had music in the evenings: a wonderful jazz ensemble, a pair of Irish folk singers, a string trio, and the main attraction: Till Bönner. There were two theatres with many presentations ranging from choir practice groups, theater rep group, concert by Bonner, and lectures by an astrophysisist and a historian who spoke on London's history since Roman times--he was very entertaining--a real highlight. There was daily afternoon tea from 3 to 4:30. I went twice and skipped dinner those evenings--the teas were accompanied by the string trio and other days a pianist. The room was very large, accommodating at least 400 people. There were exercise options, some for extra $$, some free. I did the morning yoga, did a spinning class, one hiit, and one dance class: waltz. There were two gala nights in which you had to wear formal clothes, which I didn't have, so I stayed in my "stateroom." On those nights. Re: the cabins: mine was small and had no window, but because of the panneling and the large bed it didn't feel cramped. It was very well decorated. The steward was excellent. Overall, it was a great way to get from New York to South Hampton.

28 Night Mediterranean Highlights Cruise

28 Nights - Queen Mary 2 - Departed from New York - Brooklyn, New York

The QM2 was not as I remember it in the past. Staff seemed new and unsure of what they were supposed to be doing (a couple of exceptions though). Ship is getting "older" and needs some attention for updating all areas. Food was not up to par except in the cafeteria (King's Court) where there was a very big tasty selection and variety. Enjoyed the passengers I met, but dealing with the ship's staff could be time consuming.

7 Night Independence Day Celebration Cruise

We are 57/58 years old and very active. This cruise was for older retirees. The ship did not have a lot to do and nothing late at night. The food was average. The dining room staff were not very friendly. Our cabin steward was excellent. He was friendly and did a great job. We enjoyed the ballroom dancing. They did not play enough variety of song types - lots of foxtrot , tango and waltz - which was great. Very little swing music and almost no latin music. I would not recommend this cruise line. Much prefer Royal Caribbean.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

Fares begin around: $4,028 per person (double occupancy) for a seven-night Caribbean cruise

Sails to: Eastern and Western Caribbean, Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line's private island)

Fans of Disney Cruise Line will find many familiar venues, attractions and restaurants on the new Disney Treasure, sister ship of Disney Wish . However, there will also be plenty of new features, including the theme of the ship: adventure. The Grand Hall, inspired by the movie "Aladdin," is designed with dark shades of blue, turquoise and gold and features a golden statue of a magic carpet with Aladdin and Jasmine.

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Meanwhile, "Disney The Tale of Moana" – a Broadway-style production based on the film "Moana" – will be exclusive to Disney Treasure. Adults will also find new lounges, such as the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society and the Periscope Pub, which is inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Disney Treasure can carry up to 4,000 passengers.

There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.

Over 15 days, aboard Le Bougainville , explore the red island during an expedition cruise combining encounters with the local communities, geological discoveries, and the opportunity to observe the native fauna and flora.

From Port-Louis , on the island of Mauritius, you will first sail to Réunion Island , before reaching the shores of Madagascar . You discover Fort-Dauphin . More commonly called Tolagnaro, it is fascinating for its past marked by colonisation and for its natural environment where exceptional plant life has created a breathtaking décor.

Further on await turquoise waters , the magnificent coral reefs and the natural pools of Nosy Ve , an islet of white sand that shelters a large colony of red-tailed tropicbirds.

Along the vast beaches lined with dunes in Sarodrano , you will have the unique privilege of meeting and interacting with a small community of Vezos, one of the last “sea nomad” people. Learn more about how they make their wooden dugout canoes, shaped for trade. You will visit their charming village and sit with them in their authentic dugout canoes with square sails, to learn about their age-old seafaring skills.

Toliara , formerly Tuléar, comes into view at the mouth of the Onilahy River . Nearby, the wild expanses of southwestern Madagascar form UNESCO biosphere reserves thanks to their exceptional flora that will delight botany enthusiasts.

After exploring the picturesque and sumptuous city of Belo sur Mer , you will join Majunga where you will visit Ankarafantsika National Park , home to numerous bird and lemur species.

Your ship will then set sail towards the northern tip of Madagascar . Let yourself be dazzled by the beauty of the deserted beaches and preserved coral reefs of the idyllic islets in the Nosy Komba marine park, renowned for its fabulous underwater life.

Finally, you will reach Nosy Be , where your fabulous adventure in the Indian Ocean will come to an end.

The encounters with the wildlife described above illustrate possible experiences only and cannot be guaranteed.

Constantly in movement, the city, which was once a port of call on the route to India, is home to many cultural and historic treasures. In addition to the city’s market where you will be able to discover all the local flavours and many handicrafts, make sure that you visit Fort Adelaide . Pointe des Galets

January 10, 2026 - Pointe des Galets

Arrival 1/10/2026 Departure 1/10/2026

At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the port of Pointe des Galets lasted seven years, with the town called Le Port emerging in its wake. You’ll also hear the name “Port-Réunion” used to designate the Pointe des Galets , which is the main port on the island of La Réunion. In fact, it is the only port in France that has five functions: naval base, passenger terminal, commercial port, fishing port and marina. The old town of the Port conjures up the area’s rich history, which is connected to transport. Here you’ll be able to discover the former house of the Réunion Railway and Port Company (1878), its marine cemetery and its teeming covered market.

During your journey at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the PONANT photographers in their dedicated space. More commonly known as “Tôlagnaro”, it shelters spectacular biodiversity with the majestic Pic Saint-Louis as a natural sanctuary. Like a sugar loaf standing 529 metres (1,736 feet) high and overlooking the town, this mountain is home to exceptional flora: ravenalas, raffia palms, orchids and periwinkles all intermingle in a breathtaking setting.

Located on a two-kilometre (1.2 miles) long coral bank, this island is unique in that it is home to a colony of endemic birds commonly called red-tailed tropicbird. This nature reserve, a nesting site for rare birds, is unique because it is this species’ only reproduction site. The duckboards installed on the island will enable you to observe the birds hidden from view under the forest of Madagascar jewel. This Eden dotted with natural pools is also a setting for coral, fish and sea turtles you can discover while snorkelling.

This village of Vezo fishermen possesses the authentic and unspoiled charm of remote places. You will be surprised by the dexterity with which these “nomads of the sea” steer their outrigger canoes to fish, or keep up their ancestral traditions like seaweed cultivation. If the tide allows it, you will also have the possibility of discovering the sacred cave of Sarodrano , a natural fresh water pool separated from the sea by just 10 metres (33 feet) of rocks.

Toliara

January 17, 2026   January 18, 2026 - Toliara

Arrival 1/17/2026 Departure 1/18/2026

The choreography of these vessels coming and going on the beach sets the pace of life in the village, bestowing it with a unique charm.

January 20, 2026 - At sea

Majunga

January 21, 2026 - Majunga

Arrival 1/21/2026 Departure 1/21/2026

A lively and cosmopolitan town on the west coast of Madagascar , Majunga , also called Mahajanga, will be a port of call rich in discoveries. The former capital of the Sakalava kingdom, then a significant interchange due to its prime position between Africa and the Middle East, the city displays an interesting cultural patchwork. Also renowned for its outstanding natural sites, this port of call will provide you with the opportunity to discover Ankarafantsika National Park , home to many endemic animal and plant species, or the Cirque Rouge , immense red sandstone formations classified as national heritage.

Nosy Komba

January 22, 2026 - Nosy Komba

Arrival 1/22/2026 Departure 1/22/2026

During your cruise, your ship will stop in Nosy Komba , otherwise known as “ lemur island ”. Not far from the Madagascar mainland, this volcanic island shaped like a gigantic turtle shell is covered in dense tropical rainforest. This vegetation is home to amusing black lemurs – furry orange-brown and black creatures that are surprisingly agile and call to each other from amongst the trees. The many small beaches and the emerald-coloured water make Nosy Komba a natural gem that only a select few visit.

Nosy Be

January 23, 2026 - Nosy Be

Arrival 1/23/2026 Disembarkation 1/23/2026 at 8:00 AM

Nosy Be (from the Malagasy: Nosy meaning island and Be meaning large), in the Mozambique Channel, is located near the north-eastern coastlines of Madagascar. A former French protectorate, known under the promising name of “ the scented island” , of volcanic origin, it is located on a maritime route with access to India and Asia. Cosmopolitan, a boulevard of encounters, its mixed-race and multicultural population still remembers its past as a significant trading post . Today, its 321 km² enchant lovers of nature and idyllic beaches. Its sumptuous primary forest is home to animals that are endemic to the island as well as surprising flora.

Le Bougainville

The garden stretches over endless acres of land, and it may take you more than a week to see the whole garden. It is populated with more than 650 varieties of plants, including the famous Baobabs, the Palmier Bouteille, the ineluctable Giant Water Lilies, dozens of medicinal plants, a large spice garden and much more. One of the main attractions of the botanical garden is the 85 varieties of palm trees brought from different corners of the world. Other indigenous species of plants are also exhibited here.

ECOCHIC GETAWAY IN MAURITIUS (3 NIGHTS)

Day 1 – Mauritius airport / Chamarel

You will be transferred to your hotel. The lunch is included in case of arrival before 2: 00 pm.

Check-in in your room.

The end of the day is at leisure.

Dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 – Chamarel and Central area

After breakfast, depart for Kot Marie-Michelle, a table d’hôte located in the heart of the island in the village of Midlands (about 1-hour drive).

Surrounded by mountains, sugarcane fields, tea plantations, and hunting grounds, it offers a tranquil escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Kot Marie-Michelle specializes in traditional cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients. Vegetables are sourced from their garden or the village, and spices are roasted over wooden flames and ground manually on a roche-carri, just like the grandmothers of Mauritius used to use. In fact, this table d'hôte is run by two young grandmothers. It provides a unique experience of local life, offering authentic Mauritian cuisine and warm hospitality. The activity includes a culinary discovery before experiencing an authentic lunch (including several local dishes).

Then reach the Black River Gorges National Park which is an ancient primaeval forest, famous for being the home of endangered species such as the Mauritius Falcon. In earlier times, the extremely hard ebony found in the park was used in making warships in different parts of the world.     The Gorges Viewpoint offers a spectacular panoramic view of endless green stretches. You will be amazed to discover how high the viewing area is from the gorge. On the right side of the viewpoint, you can see a breathtaking waterfall.

Continue until the Chamarel Geopark. With distinct colours of red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple and yellow, this geological curious happening has 15 metres of highly coloured dunes - an almost surreal, lunar-like spectacle of rainbow-hued sand dunes before your eyes. You will have the chance to view the gorgeous Chamarel waterfall. Three distinct streams plunge down almost 100 metres from the St. Denis River, down into the gorge. The sight of this impressive waterfall against the scenic forests and mountains is truly breathtaking.

Your day of visit ends at Ebony forest where you discover how rapidly Mauritian forests disappeared and why today Mauritius harbours one of the World’s most threatened flora and fauna populations during this 25-minute guided tour. Visit the native plant propagation nursery and see some of the rarest plants in the world being grown.

Back to your hotel, and end of the day at leisure.

Dîner at the hotel.

Day 3 – Chamarel / South East of Mauritius

Accompanied by your guide, you will depart to discover the scenic south of Mauritius.

After 30-minute drive, start your visit at Bois Cheri, the first tea plantation in Mauritius and dates back to 1892.

Visiting the Bois Chéri Estate is one of the main sites of the Mauritian Tea Route. This is the spot where tea-lovers will get to learn how tea is cultivated, picked and packaged. You will travel back in history throughout this visit and get a surprising feeling of tranquility. You will visit the tea production museum learning more about the history of tea in Mauritius. Nowadays Bois Cheri produces a new range of flavored teas, green teas and herbal teas. You may taste them during your visit. Get ready to be amazed by the richness and freshness of the flavours you are about to taste. The Bois Chéri offers a great panoramic view of the south of the island.

Your morning vissit continues until La Rhumerie de Saint Aubin. Located in the south of the island, this estate is a pioneer in the manufacture of agricultural rum. At l’atelier du Rhum, you can discover traditional techniques and all the process of rum making.    Prepare a “rhum arrangé” of your choice with seasonal fruits and seal the bottle for a souvenir to bring home. After the rum workshop, enjoy delicious dishes prepared with the rum at Le Saint Aubin restaurant, an old colonial house dating from 1819.

After your lunch, you can visit the Mini Ferme du Domaine de Saint Aubin, La Maison de La Vanille, where aromatic Vanilla pods are produced, La Serre d ’Anthurium du Domaine de Saint Aubin, Le Jardin Botanique du Domaine de Saint Aubin, Le Moulin du Domaine de Saint Aubin and La Boutique du Domaine de Saint Aubin where you can find other souvenirs.

Back to your hotel, enjoy an en rout stop at Gris Gris, a beach located at the southernmost tip of the island. Unlike other beaches in the South known for their calm waters, Gris Gris stands out as a unique destination. This little piece of coastline lacks a coral reef, allowing powerful waves to crash upon the shore, providing a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. Gris Gris offers a stark contrast to the tranquillity of other nearby beaches. At Gris Gris viewpoint, you can witness the relentless force of the waves as they collide with a prominent rock formation, creating a dramatic display accompanied by a resounding roar.

Day 4 – Chamarel / Mauritius airport

You will then be transferred to the airport in time for check-in for the PONANT selected flight or any other flight (provided that you have previously communicated your flight schedule to your travel agent). You will then be transferred to the airport in time for check-in of the PONANT selected flight.

I don't gamble, but I used a casino status match to get a cheap cruise

Katie Genter

As I sat on my balcony looking at the Rock of Gibraltar in the distance, I couldn't believe I'd paid just $72 per night for me and my husband to take a 14-night transatlantic cruise.

Like many other passengers I talked to during the crossing, I'd booked my cheap cruise through a Carnival Players Club offer. My specific offer gave me a "free" balcony room, $50 of casino credit and complimentary drinks while playing in the casino.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

But unlike many passengers who booked Carnival Players Club offers, I hadn't gambled my way to a cruise. Instead, I'd used a chain of status matches to get casino status and sign up for a Carnival Fun Match. Then, I obsessively checked the Fun Match cruise offers until I found one I couldn't resist.

Read on to learn how I did it and how you can, too.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

How I got casino status without gambling

To get a Carnival Fun Match, I needed to submit proof of status in another casino's players club or loyalty program.

I have Caesars Rewards Diamond status, but I don't believe I've ever gambled at a Caesars casino — although I have earned reward credits on hotel stays, shopping and dining in Las Vegas. The truth is my activity with Caesars is far too limited to have earned Diamond status with the program. Instead, I have Caesars Diamond status via a match from Wyndham Rewards Diamond status .

You can earn Wyndham Diamond status through the end of the next calendar year if you stay with Wyndham for at least 40 qualifying nights in a calendar year. However, the Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business Card offers automatic Wyndham Diamond status for as long as you have the card.

I initially held Wyndham Diamond status through a series of status matches that are no longer available, but after using my Wyndham status for the Carnival Fun Match, my status expired. Now, I hold Diamond status as a Wyndham Business cardholder.

The information for the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Caesars now requires you to "have earned Tier Status with your current loyalty program in order for your status to be matched." But Diamond status from holding the Wyndham Business card counts as an earned status to match to Caesars Rewards.

To summarize, I got Wyndham Diamond status via a no-longer-available status match — but you can still get it by holding the Wyndham Business card. Then, I matched this status to Caesars Rewards online. In previous years, it has taken a few weeks for my match to go through, but this year, it took about a month.

Leveraging status matches

With Caesars Diamond status in hand, it was time to request a Carnival Fun Match in the hopes of scoring a free or cheap cruise.

You can register for the Carnival Players Club Fun Match program if you are 21 or older and a legal resident of one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C. Once you do so, you won't get elite status, but you might get discounted cruise offers. Even if you already are a member of Carnival Cruise Line's VIFP Club loyalty program , you can still register for a Fun Match.

To register, you'll need to input your VIFP Club number and email; if you don't have a VIFP account, you can create one. Either way, check the box for "I would like to receive emails for special offers and/or information from Carnival" to get offers in your inbox.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

I submitted proof of my Caesars Rewards Diamond status by taking photos of both sides of my physical Caesars Diamond card I'd picked up in Las Vegas. If I had more casino statuses, I could have uploaded more than just one and might have gotten better offers. You'll likely get better offers if you go that route and submit proof of status with other casino loyalty programs.

Carnival Fun Match offers

Once you register for a Carnival Players Club Fun Match, you might see offers via email within a week. However, some travelers have reported registering for Fun Match and only receiving discounted cruise offers. You might go through all the effort of status matching and still not get any offers for a "free" cruise.

When I wrote this story, the Carnival Fun Match website said travelers who register will get "drinks included + upgrades + $50 to spend in the casino." You should get at least whichever offer is currently on the Fun Match registration page.

Otherwise, there are no rules or official guidance regarding the types of Fun Match offers you might receive or how long you might receive offers. Each offer you let expire could be the last offer you see. Once you book a Fun Match offer, the flow of offers into your email inbox will likely end ... at least, until you've gone on your cruise and Carnival has assessed your level of play in its onboard casino.

I started getting Fun Match emails in my inbox within a week of registering in January 2022. Until I booked a Fun Match offer in March 2023, I got one to four emails with Fun Match offers per week.

Some Fun Match offers were for cruises starting at $55 per person, per day (plus taxes, fees and gratuities), based on double occupancy. With these offers, I could have gotten complimentary drinks in the casino and bonus cash from Carnival based on how many points I accrued in the casino during my cruise. For reference, you'll earn 1 point for every $2.50 you wager through slot machines.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

Other offers included a "free" cruise with complimentary drinks in the casino and a $50 FunPlay credit. Some offers even included balcony rooms, although these were more limited than ocean-view rooms, which in turn were more limited than windowless inside rooms.

A "free" cruise, mind you, isn't really free. You'll still need to pay a deposit (which you'll get back in onboard credits), plus taxes, fees and gratuities.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

After a while, I forgot about the Fun Match offers, as they got hidden in the Promotions tab of my inbox. But once I rediscovered them in late 2022, I checked my cruise offers daily.

You might find hundreds of offers when you click through to see the eligible cruises for a specific offer. Most are usually for cruises to the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Mexico in inside cabins. You can filter by cruise destination, departure port, length of cruise and sail date.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

You can select an ocean-view room, balcony or suite if they're available for the sailing, but you will often need to pay more to upgrade to these room types.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

Carnival is not in the business of giving away free cruises if it believes it could sell them for more. The best Fun Match deals will likely be on shoulder-season sailings, last-minute cruises and other itineraries that are unlikely to sell out. Don't expect to find a "free" offer on a popular Christmas cruise or a summer cruise on the line's newest ship.

With this understanding, my husband and I decided that if we were going to accept a Fun Match offer, we wanted a "free" balcony cabin on a transatlantic , transpacific or Panama Canal full transit cruise . We had high hopes and were willing to risk not booking an offer for the chance to book one of these extended cruises with a balcony.

After a few months of daily checks, we saw a Fun Match "free" cruise offer for an April 2024 transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to Port Canaveral (near Orlando) in a balcony cabin. This offer perfectly fit our criteria — a balcony cabin on a transatlantic cruise — so we booked it with a $200 deposit before it disappeared. After all, months of searching had taught me that offers can go away quickly.

transatlantic cruise january 2024

As you can see, our "free" cruise wasn't free. But even after the $391 in taxes and fees and $406 in prepaid gratuities, we got a great deal on our transatlantic voyage. It cost just $36 per person, per night — and that included meals in the ship's multiple complimentary restaurants, onboard entertainment and transportation across the Atlantic.

Plus, about six months before our cruise, a Chase Offer appeared for Carnival that let us get some cash back while paying for the remainder of our cruise cost.

Related: I earned a 'free' cruise in a ship casino — here's what it cost, plus tips for getting comped

transatlantic cruise january 2024

Was it worth it?

The Carnival Fun Match was worth it for me. I enjoyed our extended cruise on Carnival Glory and would certainly book another casino offer. It takes patience and stubbornness to wait for the perfect offer that might never come, but I was happy we waited to use my Fun Match offer for a balcony cabin on a 14-night transatlantic cruise.

Once on board, I felt no pressure to gamble despite cruising on a casino offer. You could theoretically never visit the cruise ship casino while sailing on a Fun Match cruise. But since my husband and I had complimentary drinks when playing in the casino as part of our Fun Match offer, we did spend some time at Carnival Glory's Camel Club Casino. I stuck to 1-cent slots, ended up about even and enjoyed a few hard seltzers most evenings.

My limited casino play was enough. I've now started getting new "free" inside cabin cruise offers from Carnival Players Club and am considering booking another cruise if I find the right offer. Panama Canal, here we come!

  • Recent disappearances in the British Virgin Islands raise concerns about passenger safety and cast shadows over affordable cruises.
  • Multiple disappearances sparked a complex investigation into potential security lapses onboard Norwegian Sky.
  • Various theories, from foul play to natural hazards, add to the mystery behind unsettling incidents at sea.

Travelers are often drawn to dangerous and remote cruises that promise an off-the-beaten-path experience. However, for six cruise travelers, the experience turned into a tale of caution. Alarming shadows fell over a seemingly ordinary cruise starting in March 2024. Between March 10th and late April 2024, six passengers vanished from the Norwegian Sky cruise ship. The missing individuals come from various backgrounds: Colombian, Dutch, and Dominican nationals.

The unsettling disappearances disrupted the usual tranquility of the Caribbean escape, leaving loved ones and local authorities desperately searching for answers. The mysterious absence of these passengers from the Norwegian Sky, one of the most affordable cruises , has sparked a complex investigation, raising concerns about passenger safety and casting a veil of unease over the idyllic vacation destination – the British Virgin Islands.

A Trail Gone Cold In The British Virgin Islands

Unexplained disappearances colored one cruise in the virgin islands.

A series of disturbing disappearances has plagued the idyllic Virgin Islands in recent months. The first incident occurred on March 10th, 2024, in Tortola, a popular tourist destination. Three Colombian passengers – Jean Carlo Ospina Cano, Pamela Mesa Escobar, and Yesica Yojana Marin Ramirez – vanished without a trace after disembarking from the cruise ship Norwegian Sky. The government of the British Virgin Islands published a press release requesting information to help find the Colombian nationals .

This unsettling trend continued on April 19th when two more cruise passengers, Pascal Bosman (Netherlands) and Martire Cabrera (Dominican Republic), went missing from the Virgin Islands after disembarking from the same ship. The government issued another press release requesting help to find the passengers .

The most recent disappearance involved Monica Marcela Pineda, a Colombian national, who vanished on April 28th, 2024. A press release was issued in the hopes of locating her .

Cruising This Summer? Here Are 10 Modern Essentials You Need To Pack

From basic necessities to lesser-known conveniences, here are the essential items you need to take on your cruise this year.

While Norwegian Sky is one of the best Virgin Islands cruises for seafaring escapades , the six disappearances, which occurred within a 49-day period, raised concerns about a potential pattern. Authorities are likely looking into several areas, including scrutinizing security footage from the cruise ship, investigating the last known locations of the missing, and conducting background checks.

This timeline is current as of June 16th, 2024.

A Brazilian Couple Also Disappeared In January 2024

A couple disappeared earlier this year in the virgin islands.

While this incident isn’t related to the Norwegian Sky cruise ship, it is tied to the British Virgin Islands. In January 2024, a Brazilian couple sparked a brief panic after disappearing from their Costa Pacifica cruise. News outlets reported their absence , raising concerns about their safety. However, the story took an unexpected turn when the couple resurfaced on social media . They extended their stay on a remote island without informing their families or the cruise line.

As it turns out, Ms. Thomé took ill on the cruise and decided to stay in the Virgin Islands for medical reasons. They booked a hotel and even traveled to Virgin Gorda before flying to St. Maarten the next day. The lack of passport checks at the airport upon their departure and their limited communication options due to an inactive phone SIM card contributed to the confusion.

Getting sick can get you banned from boarding a cruise ship . This is to prevent other passengers from catching a possible contagious disease.

Set Sail In Style: 10 Essential Tips For A Stress-Free Cruise Experience

Wondering how to prepare to set sail on the open sea the best way possible? Here are 10 essential tips for a stress-free cruise experience.

The Brazilian couple's incident, while ultimately a case of miscommunication, highlights the potential for panic in situations where disappearances occur. It also raises questions about communication protocols between cruise lines, local authorities, and families in such situations. The current string of disappearances in the Virgin Islands differs from the January incident in its scope and lack of resolution.

The multiple disappearances within a short time frame, coupled with the lack of information about the missing individuals' intentions, suggests a more serious situation.

Possible Explanations And Speculations Behind The Virgin Islands Disappearances

Many have speculated about passenger disappearances in the british virgin islands.

Several theories have attempted to explain these unsettling events, but there is no clear explanation yet.

Understanding Cruise Ship Protocol And Passenger Safety

General safety records and protocol for handling late passengers.

While cruise ships boast impressive safety records, ensuring passenger well-being extends beyond onboard hazards. Protocols exist for situations like missed departures. For a hassle-free cruise experience , it is important to plan ahead and review the cruise’s protocols. Ideally, passengers should communicate potential delays beforehand. Most cruise lines offer a grace period after departure, sometimes up to an hour.

The industry standard 15 to 20-minute waiting rule grants the captain some discretion to hold off for passengers with documented reasons for being late. Unfortunately, if a passenger misses the departure entirely, the ship will likely sail on without them. Strict regulations on passenger capacity and adherence to itineraries necessitate this policy. Turning a massive cruise ship around is a logistical and financial burden.

What To Do If Your Cruise Is Canceled

While cruise lines do not take cancellations lightly, passengers need to know what they are entitled to if their voyage is scrapped.

The captain, however, has the final say. The severity of the reason for tardiness, the impact on the planned activities, and any prior communication from the passenger all influence the captain's decision. Ultimately, prioritizing the safety of all passengers onboard guides the captain's choice to wait or depart without a tardy individual.

The recent incident highlights the importance of passenger safety and adhering to established cruise line protocols. The Virgin Islands may be synonymous with tranquility, but these disappearances have cast a shadow of concern.

By prioritizing passenger safety, cooperating fully with the investigation, and offering any assistance possible, people can work towards resolving this situation and ensuring the safe return of those who have vanished.

Morning Bid: Transatlantic Split Reopens as Half-Year Nears

Reuters

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike Dolan

Global investors head to the half-year point this week trying to get across numerous political narratives, a hiccup in tech and a reopening of the transatlantic gap in business activity.

Throw in Friday's looming release of the Federal Reserve's favoured PCE inflation gauge and an ongoing slide in Japan's yen and China's yuan and it's a sparkier summer than the buoyant first-half world markets numbers might suggest.

The shakeout in artificial intelligence torchbearer Nvidia last week, which saw its stocks recoil about 10% from new records by the end of the week, probably owes much to profit taking on its blistering rise - and perhaps also something to do with Friday's major futures and options expiries.

But with the U.S. presidential TV debate this Thursday likely to sound the starting gun on speculation around November's election outcome, the final week of the first half potentially ushers in a change of tone.

Politics dominates in Europe too, with the first round of France's parliamentary election this weekend and as Britainheads to the polls on July 4.

So far on Monday at least, the electoral anxiety hasn't disturbed too much in markets. European stocks pushed higher, Britain's FTSE was up and U.S. stock futures were marginally positive ahead of the bell. The VIX volatility gauge has crept to its highest of the month, however.

That owes something to renewed interest rate cut hopes in Europe and in the United States - where the PCE release for May should re-emphasise that disinflation has resumed.

But the latest sweep of economic and business health readings for June have showed a marked divergence again in fortunes either side of the Atlantic.

Flash business surveys for the euro zone and Britain showed overall activity slowing much more than forecast this month - barely remaining in expansionary territory for June.

But the equivalent U.S. soundings picked up a gear and show a much faster growth clip.

ECONOMIC SURPRISE INDEX TURNS NEGATIVE

Adding to the confusion, and perhaps the greater comfort that more interest rate cuts are coming in the second half, is the fact that the aggregate global economic surprise index has turned negative to the worst reading in almost a year.

What's more, the hesitant business move in Europe was underlined on Monday as Germany's Ifo institute showed business morale falling unexpectedly. Ifo's business climate index sank to 88.6 in June from 89.3 in May, compared with a reading of 89.7 forecast.

But the real market price action was in Japan's yen, which skidded again to within a whisker of the 160 per dollar - close to 34-year low of 160.245 it set in April before the Bank of Japan intervened to prop it up.

Japan's top currency diplomat Masato Kanda said on Monday authorities would take appropriate steps if there was excessive foreign exchange movement, and that the addition of Japan to the U.S. Treasury's "monitoring list" would not restrict their actions.

Treasury last week said no major trading partner appeared to have manipulated its currency last year, but it added Japan to a foreign exchange monitoring list alongside China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Germany, which were on the previous list.

A summary of opinions at the BOJ's June policy meeting, meantime, showed some policymakers called for raising interest rates in a timely fashion as they saw a risk of inflation overshooting expectations.

Although Japan's Nikkei lapped up the weak yen and climbed 0.5%, signs of renewed foreign capital flight and rising global trade tensions saw China's ailing markets underperform yet again.
