Transylvania Castles tour in 4 days from Bucharest

Our guide, Taian, was ideal. He is a fount of knowledge, passionate about history and culture and a most considerate companion, generous with his time and concerned about the comfort of each member of the group. He is also a skillful driver, which is essential in Romania's awful traffic. One big negative for the trip is that TourRadar in the brochure warns that Peles Castle is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and therefore any tour starting on those days will travel in the opposite direction, allowing the splendour of this magnificent castle to be fully explored. This did not happen. We arrived on Tuesday and only the ground floor was open. This was a major disappointment because Peles is perhaps the grandest castle in the whole of Romania. In other words, the circumstance that eventuated had been foreseen by TourRadar but not catered for, as promised in the brochure.

The Carpathian Mountains of Romania are stunning and we enjoyed each day of hiking this beautiful area. Kosten our hiking guide was knowledgeable and adjusted our daily hikes per our requests. His expertise and humour greatly enriched our experience. Accommodations and meals were good and mixing in some cultural sites of the area was a bonus. A great week!

5 Days Transylvania Tour from Bucharest to Budapest

Bucharest to Budapest with Trip2Ro would have to be the highlight of our journey, this tour was made even more special by George taking us to Peles Castle on Sunday afternoon as the castle would be closed Mon/Tues the castle was amazing. Our guide for the tour which actually commenced on Monday was Liviu and from our first meeting we could tell he was passionate about his country and enjoyed sharing his knowledge (of which there was an abundance). Liviu looked after us in a caring manner and took us to some amazing sites and local restaurants, he used the car trip time to brief us on the history and culture of the next site and answer any questions. We think the tour was a great experience and would highly recommend to anyone wishing to visit Romania, thank you George and Liviu for a great trip, Brian and Rae Thomas, Australia

Dracula Tour in Romania from Bucharest including \'The Ritual of Killing of a Living Dead Tour

Dracula Tour in Romania from Bucharest including 'The Ritual of Killing of a Living Dead

This was my dream vacation come true. I will treasure these memories forever. However, the Tour Radar brochure shows this tour is for people 7 - 90 years old. This is very deceiving. There is no way a 90 year old could do all the walking involved. This is a very intense walking tour and there is much walking every day. This needs to be specified. There would be very little wheelchair access along this tour. Additionally, Poienari Fortress has been closed for several years with no plan to reopen anytime soon. This attraction was one of the reasons I booked this specific tour. You need to remove it from the brochure. Again, it is very misleading. Also remove the Borgo Pass, as they do not go there. This was another attraction I wanted to see but did not get to. You may want to add to the brochure that there are several hotels that do not have air conditioning. All that being said I had the most wonderful time.

3 Days Tour in Transylvania: Peles& Dracula\'s Castle, Sighisoara & Salt Mine Tour

3 Days Tour in Transylvania: Peles& Dracula's Castle, Sighisoara & Salt Mine

The guide (Florin) was excellent and I have no complaints there at all. I was very surprised to be the only one on the tour. I was shocked to find that we did not spend the night in Sighisoara as per the itinerary but drove back to Brasov. The hotel in Brasov was sub standard. Lights didn’t work properly - owner just laughed. Door handle was off bathroom door - I screwed it on myself. The biggest shock was the price. I paid over 220usd extra for a single supplement yet I could have booked a (better) room in this hotel for 40usd per night, online. Breakfast started at 10am but we left 8:15-8:30 each day so I had to find my own breakfast and get reimbursed. Starbucks was the only option open on the first morning. Meals that Florin recommended (not included) were excellent. No entrance fees are included for any of the visits so this is an exceptionally expensive tour and not one I could recommend with that cost. Further to being the only one on the tour... This needs to be notified. Like many solo female travellers, I will not venture out alone at night in unfamiliar countries/cities.

3 Days Dracula Tour in Transylvania

It's a wonderful region and the itinerary is stellar, full of beautiful, unforgettable sights. Our guide was an excellent driver and very friendly, but we felt he lacked a bit in terms of in-depth knowledge of the places and things we were seeing. Nevertheless, in general it was an amazing experience and we can't wait to return to Romania!

4 days Tour of Transylvania from Budapest to Bucharest

Awesome trip with a great guide. Everything worked flawlessly. Trip destinations selected were very interesting and beautiful to see. The guide was very knowledgeable and an excellent driver. Good hotels in nice little towns as overnight stops with enough 'free time' to go exploring too. Would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the landscape, history, architecture and people of Romania but does not want the rigidity, crowdedness and hurry of large groups or single day excursions.

Florin was a great guide. He had a great depth of knowledge about the history of Romania, and his selection of events and timing was perfect. As a solo traveler, I felt very safe and well informed throughout the whole process, and he made a great travel partner for those few days. I'd highly recommend him to anyone looking to explore Romania.

What people love about Transylvania Tours

Our four day Transylvania castles tour was fabulous. Our guide Traian was excellent. Knowledgeable, friendly, and very respectful of our time and wishes regarding variations to the plan. Hotel accommodations were very good. Fantastic way to experience Transylvania

What to expect on our Romania walking tours! Explore breathtaking landscapes and historic wonders as you take a stroll through the charming countryside. With only light backpacks to carry, you’ll get to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the country.

Our base camp in the picturesque town of Bran is the perfect starting point for your journey. Nestled on the border of two national parks in the Carpathian Mountains, you’ll get to enjoy lovely day hikes and unwind in comfortable lodgings with private bathrooms and hot showers. Plus, savor the delicious taste of Romanian cuisine for a truly delightful experience.

  • Bucegi National Park
  • Piatra Craiului National Park
  • Bran Castle
  • Zarnesti Cayon

Your guide will meet you at either Bucharest Airport or your hotel in Bucharest, and you will drive together to Transylvania, through the Carpathian Mountains, a journey of about 3 hours.

Upon arrival, you will check in at the lodge in Bran, where you will stay for the entire 6-night duration of the tour, so you don't have to worry about packing and unpacking daily.

Before dinner, there will be an opportunity for a brief exploratory walk in the surrounding area.

we embark on a hike through the breathtaking Zarnesti Gorges! As we begin our journey, we'll gently make our way through a narrow limestone canyon, a former cave whose ceiling collapsed millions of years ago, creating this spectacular natural wonder.

After about 3 hours of hiking, we'll arrive at the beautiful Curmatura chalet where we'll enjoy a hearty lunch on the terrace while surrounded by jagged peaks and fairytale meadows.

On our way back, we'll take another trail through the woods, along the Cat's Canyon, and back down into the Zarnesti Gorges and to the pickup point.

And that's not all, we'll also get to explore the 13th-century mountaintop fortress at Rasnov Fortress, one of the most spectacular strongholds of Transylvania, built by the Teutonic Knights and listed as one of the top 10 snow castles in the world by Conde Nast Traveler.

You'll learn about the rich history of the fortress, which was enlarged by the villagers of Rasnov and became a small walled city protecting them from invaders. The villagers even built an impressive 480-foot-deep well to get the vital water needed during prolonged sieges that lasted for weeks or even months.

After a day filled with adventure, we'll spend the night back in Bran.

Distance: 10 km, ascent: 600 meters, descent: 600 meters – Duration: about 4 hours.

A 3 hours round trip to Magura, one of the most photographed villages in Romania. Traditional houses, scattered on superb green hills, wildflowers, and the tranquil sound of cowbells, all gathered in the most stunning mountainous landscape.

Visit Bran Castle in the afternoon. The castle was built in the 14th century on the border between Transylvania (Hungarian Empire) and Wallachia (controlled but the Turkish Ottoman Empire) It is hard to imagine the magnitude of the battles that this castle withstood during its 600 years of existence. Latter in 1889 Bram Stocker picked Bran Castle to be the gloomy castle of the terrifying Count Dracula. The castle is anyway, one of the best medieval structures in Romania

Distance 10 km, ascent 200 Meters, descent 200 meters – Duration about 4 hours

Return to our lodge for the night

Get ready to immerse yourself in history and culture as we explore the beautifully preserved, historic center of Brasov! On our guided walk, we'll discover the charming cobbled streets and marvel at the stunning architecture as we hear incredible, centuries-old stories.

Some of the highlights of our tour include the Council Square, the Gothic Black Church, blackened by a fire more than 300 years ago, and the "Rope Street," one of the narrowest streets in Europe. Then we'll venture outside of the city walls to the Black Tower for a breathtaking panorama of the old Brasov.

But the adventure doesn't end there, we'll also hike to Tampa Peak, a 2.5-hour trail starting from the historic center of Brasov. At the top, you'll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the medieval town 700 feet below.

After a day filled with history, culture, and amazing views, we'll return to our cozy lodgings in Bran for the night.

In the morning we visit the LiBearty bear sanctuary in Zarnesti. A place where brown bears were rescued from improper zoos and circuses. Here the bears have a second chance at a normal life, living in almost complete wilderness.

After the sanctuary, we take a scenic trail through the foothills of Bucegi National Park. As the trail follows the very edge of the mountain, you will get to see amazing panoramas over the jagged peaks ahead and green valleys bellow

Return for the night at the lodge in Bran

Today we go for an easy 4-hour expedition to Fundata, the highest village in Romania perched at just 1300 meters above sea level! Feast your eyes on some of the most picturesque landscapes the country has to offer.

Indulge in a delicious lunch at the Fundata ski resort while taking in the mesmerizing views. On the way back, we'll take a scenic route through lush meadows facing the rugged limestone ridge of Mount Bucegi. With a total distance of 10 km, an ascent of 300 meters, and a descent of 300 meters, this will be an easy day. After a refreshing shower, we'll pack up and head back to Bucharest. We'll drop you off at either the airport or your hotel of choice in Bucharest

TRIP LOCATION

WHERE YOU'RE GOING

Ask most people what comes to mind when they think of Romania and you’re likely to hear something along the lines of Dracula, vampires and gypsies. Yes, the spooky castles pitched on rocky hilltops are certainly vampire-worthy but the only real fangs you’re likely to be exposed to here are those belonging to the wild bears, wolves and lynx that roam the Carpathian Mountains. Once you place the stereotypes aside for a moment, you’ll soon understand how misunderstood, overlooked and vastly underestimated this country is.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Romania comes from the Latin ‘Romanus’ meaning ‘citizen of the Roman Empire’
  • The Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is the second largest building in the world
  • The Carpathian Mountains are home to 60% of Europe’s Brown Bear population
  • Transylvania translates to ‘the land beyond the forest’

"For the car enthusiasts eager to experience the windy turns of the Transfagarasan be sure to travel from late June to early October as it could be closed outside of this period"

Try traditional food

You'll have plenty of chance to try delicious home cooked local food during your visit to Romania but also be sure to visit Caru Cu Bere, Bucharest's oldest beer house.

tips image

Rural activities

It's always prudent to book activities in advance but this is particularly true of the rural areas as there are some logistics involved and generally the pace of life is much slower there!

tips image

Try palinka at least once

For those brave enough, there is nothing better to warm the belly than a good shot of the Romanian firewater. Be careful, though, it's strong stuff. As they would toast in Romania "Noroc!".

tips image

Cross the language barrier

Have a go at the local language, it's a romantic language so those who speak any of the other romantic languages will pick up many of the words quickly such as "salut", "merci" and "ciao".

Although Romania is a member of the European Union, it does not use the euro (€) but has its own currency - the RON / Leu. The official currency is most commonly referred to as the plural ‘lei’ although some banks and exchange offices list it as the RON. One leu divides into 100 bani with banknotes coming in various denominations normally 1 leu, 5 lei, 10 lei, 50 lei and 100 lei and less commonly, 200 and 500 lei notes. Coins come in 50 bani and 10 bani pieces, which can be useful for small tips or donations.

The easiest option is to head to a cash machine once you’ve checked into your hotel in Bucharest to withdraw funds. There are plenty of ATMs around so it’s quick and convenient to get hold of your holiday cash If you want to come prepared beforehand, the Bureau de Change in M&S is, strangely, one of the only places that dispenses the local currency. You can also purchase currency online and collect it from your local post office or even have it delivered straight to your door. Ordering currency online with the Post Office is commission-free and available for next day delivery. Obviously the more you buy the better rate you’ll receive. However you choose to get hold of your spending money, just make sure you either spend or convert your RON before you leave.

Most major credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted throughout Romania’s main towns and cities. While you should have no problem using your card to pay for drinks or dinner in major towns and cities using your card, some establishments accept cash only so it’s worth checking before you get settled in. It is also a good idea to carry some cash with you for smaller purchases and activities and while you're traveling in remote locations. It is always advisable to inform your bank that you’re travelling abroad in order to avoid the frustration of having your card blocked.

As a general rule, you’ll be able to have a good lunch for around £10 a head and will pay around £15 a head for a nice evening meal. Naturally, the type of establishment you choose to eat in and what you order will dictate the cost of your meals. Be aware that ordering imported wines can cause your bill to sky-rocket so drinking local wines is advisable. We reckon around £70 for lunch, dinner and drinks for two people is plenty per day. Please note that these are rough estimates and you can always choose to spend more or less depending on your budget and preferences. Please note that dinner at Inn on Balaban and Viscri is included.

Tipping is not obligatory in Romania although rounding up taxi fares and adding 10% in restaurants is polite and common practice. If the service has been poor please don’t feel obligated to leave a tip.

Spring: The wonderful advantage of visiting Transylvania during the spring is the presence of wildflowers and butterflies that fill the Carpathian Mountains. The weather is very pleasant although there is also a slightly higher risk of rainfall during this time. Summer: June, July and August affords long hot sunny days and blue skies with little chance of rain. While temperatures can soar to around 40 degrees in Bucharest, the Transylvanian countryside tends to be a little cooler so you can enjoy the great outdoors. Autumn: September and October bring with it slightly fresher temperatures but days are mostly sunny, warm and dry with increased chance of showers

You can always contact the UTP team on +44 207 101 4061 or [email protected]. Before you travel, you will also receive a personalised itinerary with the contact details of the local manager in Romania should there be any problems. Your guide will be on hand throughout the trip as well, so you're in safe hands.

Our digital booklet, which you will receive before travel, contains all the information you need about optional activities. Simply drop us an email letting us know what you'd like to do during your trip, and we'll take care of the rest. Please note that the payment for the optional activities will be taken locally in cash.

As Romania can get quite hot in summer, it's advisable to pack lighter clothing. Evenings can get a bit chillier, however, especially in Transylvania, so it's a good idea to have a hoodie or jacket on hand. If you're traveling in spring or autumn, do take your rain jacket with you. If you're opting for the Bear Hide trip, pack some dark-coloured clothing as the idea behind observing wild animals is to remain as inconspicuous as possible. Think black, navy blue and dark green attire. Remember, you want to see the bears but you don’t want them to see you! You might also want to bring a few layers as the temperature drops in the evening and you’ll be sitting still for quite a while. Please also ensure you bring a waterproof with you just in case!

While in Brasov, you will have the opportunity to head into the woods and observe the wild bears from the safety of a bear hide. Please let the team know beforehand if you're interested, and we can arrange the visit for you.

Obviously not a good idea to head into the woods with a pair of high heels or flip-flops on. Wear shoes that will be comfortable for walking like a sturdy pair of trainers or some walking boots. Again, darker colours are preferable.

Yes, there are a few things. A small backpack can be useful to carry all your essentials while keeping your hands free. A bottle of water is always practical and don’t forget your sun cream for hot days walking in the mountains and insect repellent to keep mosquitos away at dusk in the hide. Binoculars can be useful too!

When it comes to spotting bears in the wild, your best chance is at the bear hide. In ten years, there have only been a couple of very rare occasions that the bears didn’t show up at the hide so that ought to give you a good idea of how likely you are to catch a glimpse of them! You will, of course, see quite a few rescued bears at the Libearty Bear Sanctuary so you won’t go home without seeing at least one bear.

Very. With an experienced local tracker that is professionally trained in tracking and dealing with wild animals, you’re in safe hands for all of the bear tracking excursions. Typically, your tracker will carry an electric rod and/or a can of mace spray in the unlikely event that you should run into any problems. During the mating season it is common for trackers to carry a gun with them so please do not be alarmed.

Yes, of course. Although there are certain rules you’ll need to follow if you’d like to capture the experience on film. The use of flash, automatic focusing functions, continuous modes or settings that detect red eye are not permitted as the bears will be alerted by your presence and may react or vacate the area. If you are unsure about which camera settings you should use, ask your tracker. If you're planning to use your phone to take pictures, please ensure the settings comply to the regulations and that you put it on silent.

You will be travelling by car between each location, and you will be able to explore the towns and sights at your own pace. If you opt for the Bear Hide excursion, there is a moderate amount of walking involved. Depending on which location you will be visiting, it might take you between 15 minutes to 45 minutes to reach the hide. You will be following a forest trail with level terrain. There is some walking involved at the Sanctuary as well, with a small uphill portion, but all broken down with stops to hear the stories and watch the bears.

Transfagarasan, aka "the best road in the world" according to Top Gear, is only open a limited amount of time during the year. As such, to ensure you will see it, we recommend travelling between the end of June and beginning of October. During the cusp months (April-May and November), you will travel back to Bucharest via Olt Valley.

Day 1: Brasov, Bran Castle and hiking in the mountain villages near Bran

We will pick you up in Brasov and after a walking tour in the old town, we will head to the mountain villages near Bran Castles. Located in a beautiful natural setting between Piatra Craiului and Bucegi mountains, the villages offer splendid views over the whole area. The best time to visit the villages is in June when the meadows are painted with a burst of colours from the wildflowers, and the peaks are still having spots of snow. In the afternoon, we will visit Bran Castle. Overnight in Brasov or in the villages near Bran.

We will have a short walk through Viscri, the village hidden in Transylvania’s highlands, made famous worldwide by Prince Charles of Wales, whose foundation owns a house in the village. Then we will head to Sighisoara, the charming medieval city which is considered to be the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. In the afternoon we will have a walk around Biertan and its castle-looking fortified church. Before going to Sibiu we can have a home-cooked dinner prepared with local ingredients by the ladies from the village.

Optional extra day: Viscri, the village where time seems to have stopped

Just a short walk is not enough to understand the atmosphere of the former Saxon village. Exploring Viscri helps us immerse ourselves in a bygone era as we stroll along the cobbled streets lined with colorful, charming, traditional old houses. We will experience authentic rural life, where the herd of cows, buffaloes and goats roam the streets every morning and afternoon, where the smell of freshly baked bread wafts from the local bakery or horse-drawn carts are still the main method of locomotion. We can explore on foot the timeless landscapes of rolling hills, vibrant wildflower meadows and the majestic Viscri fortified church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And let’s not forget that Viscri is the village in Transylvania where we can visit the residence of King Charles III.

Overnight in Viscri or in the villages in the area.

Then, we will continue our journey to Apuseni mountains where we will have a few options, depending also on the season. Florin was a great guide. He was responsive when I contacted him through his website and when I requested an addition to the itinerary, he was happy to make suggestions and to add on a visit to some beautiful gorges. We also visited Bran Castle and Brasov — Florin was knowledgeable about both places and also provided extra facts about traditional and current-day Romanian culture along the way which I appreciated. He was easy-going and fun to talk with. I’d be happy to go on another tour with him!

Tour Reviews

transylvania walking tour

We did a 4 day tours of Transylvania in August 2017 with Dan as our guide and driver. Dan was a fabulous guide and driver, he has our highest recommendation. Everything went very smoothly, we had great weather and will always have fond memories of our time in Romania.

transylvania walking tour

We loved the tour, Dan took us places that all the other tour companies could only watch us do. We had an awesome time. Liviu was fun, had a great personality and you can tell he loves doing this. Next time we come to Transylvania we will definitely do this again. Thanks for a great time!

transylvania walking tour

We were three women travelling with a 2 year old to Romania with a keen interest in visiting Transylvania. I contacted Holiday to Romania through a web search. Firstly, their response time back to me was very impressive and Dan provided a very comprehensive 4 day tour outline. We booked our trip with him and I have to say, we had the most amazing time. He has perfect English, is a very safe driver and his knowledge of the country and the sights he took us to was outstanding. He is very friendly and relaxed and accomadated our changing of plans to suit the toddler. We will definitely use Holiday to Romania and Dan again. Can’t recommend him highly enough.

transylvania walking tour

We spent a week in Romania just before Christmas. We knew very little about this country but it fit into our travel plans nicely and we were hoping to see some snow at that time of the year. I made contact with Dan and he patiently helped us put an itinerary together and organised it all. As we arrived after a long haul flight into Bucharest we spent a day there before meeting up with him. He picked us up at the hotel and what we learned on the short drive out of Bucharest in his company, was more then we had found out the previous day which we spent wondering around on our own. Dan’s knowledge about his home country is amazing and he will answer all questions in great detail without being boring. We traveled with our 16 year old son in tow and I often saw him and Dan engaged in some discussion. Therefore, I can recommend Dan as a guide for any traveler, families included.

transylvania walking tour

Visiting Romania was a lifelong dream of mine. I reached out to Vlad @ Holiday Romania asking about visiting Corvin’s Castle. After a few emails, I ended up booking a 100% personalized 4 day private tour that was more than reasonably priced. Dan, my guide, was phenomenal from start to finish. The itinerary was unique and included many things I would’ve missed out on had I tried to do this myself. The information I learned from Dan during my trip was above and beyond anything I anticipated. I have traveled many places, but I don’t think I have ever had a tour experience come close to this one. Holiday Romania helped to make a lifelong dream come true for me and I cannot speak highly enough of them.

An incredible experience over 3 short days, historic town walks, castle tours, snow capped mountains, scenic views over 1100km trip expertly driven by our very knowledgeable and easy to understand Guide Adrian. So much was packed in yet so worry free it was amazing for us 2 retirees. Hotels were excellent with lots of character. Thanks for an unforgettable Adrian and Holidays to Romania.

We went to so many places in four days; walled cities of Sibiu and Sighisoara, ancient fortified churches at Biertan and Viscei, beautiful city of Brasov, Libearty Bear Sanctuary, Peles Castle, Bran Castle, Therme Spa, all guided and looked after by our lovely guide Adrian. Such a treat to have our own driver and guide – we learned so much of the history and culture of Romania.

It was an amazing tour. Vlad had to work very hard at our itinerary as we were too busy to tell him what we wanted but with persistence and key questions he managed to fulfill all our plans. Vlad didn’t rest until we were comfortable with the itinerary. It was a private tour, only my husband and I and had to ask to pay for the trip this is how satisfied I was with his services. We were picked up and dropped off to the airport in luxury cars and everyone spoke fluent English.

Walking in the Transylvanian Alps & Bucharest

Experience a walking holiday in transylvania like no other.

Transylvania is a land of dramatic mountain scenery, idyllic rural countryside, lush pastures, wildflower meadows, Saxon medieval towns and villages, and of course vampires! Travelling around Transylvania has been described as ‘the last truly medieval landscape in Europe’. You start your trip in Bucharest with two nights bed and breakfast. Romania’s cosmopolitan capital is well known for its wide boulevards and fine pre-World War I buildings that gave it the name of Little Paris. There is much to see, including a walking tour down Calea Victoriei – Bucharest’s most famous avenue, which leads to the beautiful Romanian Athenaeum, the Royal Palace and Revolution Square and further through the Old Town. The second part of the trip will take you to your main base in the medieval merchant town of Brasov with ornate Saxon churches and townhouses. Local legend has it that when the Pied Piper lured away the children from Hamelin they re-emerged near Brasov’s main square, Piata Sfatului, in the heart of the medieval quarter. It is one of the finest Baroque squares in Romania, with its 15th century Town Hall and its quaint Trumpeter’s Tower on top, and the Lutheran Black Church – the largest Gothic church between Vienna and Istanbul with a 6 tonne bell and a huge organ with 4000 pipes. Also, Included is a visit to the famous Dracula’s Bran Castle, on a rocky outcrop guarding the entrance to a mountain pass. The castle was built by the Saxons in the late 14th century to defend Brasov from invasion by the Turks. Inside you’ll find displays of rich Western European furniture, which Queen Marie, grand-daughter of Queen Victoria purchased in the 1920’s when the castle was used as a royal residence.

HOLIDAY ITINERARY

Day one flight to bucharest.

Transfer to your hotel in the centre of the city for two nights bed and breakfast accommodation. There are plenty of restaurants in downtown Bucharest to suit all tastes and budgets.

Day Two Mid-morning walking tour of Bucharest.

The tour will concentrate on Calea Victoriei – Bucharest’s most famous avenue, which leads to the beautiful Romanian Athenaeum, the Royal Palace, Revolution Square and further through the Old Town. Bucharest is also known for its stark Communist- era architecture, exemplified in Ceausescu’s monster House of the Republic, now known as the Palace of Parliament. A guided tour will show you some of 1,100 rooms of the world’s largest civilian administrative building.

Day Three Travel north through the Southern Carpathians to Brasov

Travel north through the Southern Carpathians to Brasov, stopping en route in Sinaia where you visit beautiful Peles Castle, a royal palace set in a large park, landscaped in the English fashion.  It was built in the late 19th century for Romania’s first monarch, King Carol I, and took 39 years to complete.  It has over 100 rooms richly decorated in ebony, mother of pearl and leather, and each room is styled on a particular country. Romania’s first cinema was established in one of the castle’s rooms. Continue to Brasov where your walking guide will conduct a short orientation walk before your included dinner at a local restaurant.

Day Four Walk 1

8 MILES – 270M ASCENT/DESCENT

Across the Transylvanian hills – Coach transfer to Mesendorf for the start of the walk. This 8-mile walk (270m ascent/descent) takes you over the hills and through the meadows to Viscri. A combination of bulldozing by the Ceausescu regime and the exodus of the German-speaking population after the fall of Communism threatened to wipe out the centuries-old Saxon rural heritage in Transylvania. With the help of benefactors, including King Charles, restoration and preservation schemes have helped save many villages and Viscri is the most famous example. After the walk, there is an included lunch in a local house, time to explore the village and have a tour of Viscri’s UNESCO-listed fortified church.

Day Five  Walk 2

7 MILES – 350M ASCENT/400M DESCENT

Piatra Craiului and visit Bran Castle – Today you explore the eastern hills of Piatra Craiului, a 25 km long beautiful mountain range of southern Carpathians. Postavaru and Tampa: Postavaru boasts a network of well-marked hiking trails, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and neighboring Bucegi, Piatra Mare and Piatra Craiului mountains. You will continue through the forest toward Tampa Mount that offers a spectacular view over the old part of Brasov. From Tampa you can either walk or descend by cable car down town to Brasov. 8 miles, 80m ascent/ 310m descent.

Day Seven Walk 4

2.5 MILES – 350M ASCENT/ 100M DESCENT

After the walk, you set off by coach for Bucharest, where you shall stay for the remainder of the holiday. There will be some free time after your arrival for you to settle in and get re-aquainted with your surroundings. 2.5 miles, 350m ascent/ 100m descent.
