Quito Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Quito is Ecuador’s capital, and the highest official capital city in the world, by altitude, and the closest capital city to the Equator. Quito’s historic center was also among the first declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the late 1970.

This city has seen many iterations, and though a rocky reputation has tended to rear its ugly head every few years, especially when it comes to safety and tourism, Quito remains a popular destination for tours to Ecuador .

Many distinct and unique call backs to Moorish Spain are found throughout Quito, vestiges of when Spanish Colonial influence and presence ran through Ecuador and much of South America.

The historic center of Quito is by far its best feature. Declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, this beautiful area has been left largely undisturbed by time and development, save restoration projects. Thus, walking around the ancient streets, past architecture that is both Spanish Colonial and in some places even older, is like walking back in time.

10 Top Things to Do in Quito

Quito is a wonderful city, albeit perhaps slightly less exciting than its more colorful counterparts in Ecuador like Guayaquil and Cuento. Especially after you’ve exhausted your selfie-taking angles at the bright yellow Equator line (known as La Mitad del Mundo “The Middle of the World”).

But if you love Spanish Colonial history, traditional local food, and especially love exploring old churches, Quito is the place for you. Many of these sights are a part of the “Historic Center”. This large open air plaza is surrounded by impeccably preserved Spanish Colonial architecture, and is the crux of any Quito tour.

1. Equator - For first time visitors, the Equator site is a novelty, and quite exciting to see. Technically La Mitad del Mundo is no longer the official equator line. With more accurate GPS technology, tt was realized to be 240 meters north of the established line. Even though this fact is fairly well known, hoards of travelers still use the monument for the fun photo op.

2. Basílica del Voto Nacional - The largest neo-gothic basilica in the Americas, there are spectacular views to be had from the towers, which are 377 feet (115 meters) tall. The architecture stands out quite a bit from elsewhere in Quito, and in fact, elsewhere in Ecuador.

3. Iglesia de la Campania - This stunning and enormous church is a key attraction for any visitor to Quito. A fixture of Quito’s Old Town, the church began to be built in the early 1600s - around the same time as when the city was founded. It took around 150 years to be completed however, lending to its majesty, scopy, and size.

4. El Museo Francisco - Right next door to Iglesia San Francisco, this museum is well worth walking through, especially for history buffs. The museum is chock full of beautiful paintings, furniture, and sculptures, which represent much of Quito’s 16th century history.

5. La Merced - Another church, this one built in the 1800s, is a great place to visit for art history lovers - several paintings depicting volcanos erupting over colonial Quito await you as you explore the halls. There is also a fun legend associated with its entrancing bell tower. Apparently the bell tower is the only unblessed part of the church - and therefore possessed by the devel. And only those strong enough to resist the devil can ring the bell.

6. Museo de la Ciudad - This museum is housed in one of Quito’s oldest Spanish Colonial buildings, constructed in 1563. It’s a wonderful walk through experience, with several different kinds of exhibits that depict daily life in Quito through six centuries of inhabitants.

7. Museo Nacional - For a look at some impressive pre-hispanic artifacts, and a history lesson on the Quito before the Spanish arrived, head to Museo Nacional. Colonial art is also on display here, but it’s the older items that hold attention, dating back to 12,000 BC. This museum encapsulates all the cultures that converge in South America, both native and European.

8. Cable Car to Volcano Pichincha - Don’t despair, there is actually more to see beyond churches in Quito! The city’s location among the mountains and volcanos of the Andes attracts many outdoorsy and active travelers to the region. One of the best and most enjoyable ways to see these impressive sights is by cable car, suspended high in the air. Pichincha is the closest volcano to Quito, so if you’re short on time, the cable car to see it is a great option. Go early in the day to avoid the fog which often socks the city in around the afternoon.

9. Climb Cotopaxi - Another volcano excursion. The climb to the top of Cotopaxi is strenuous but well worth it to say you stood on one of the tallest still-active volcanos in the world. There are two ways to do Cotopaxi. For the more physically fit, and those that enjoy hiking, you can climb the full 5,897 meters from base to summit. Or if you’re less inclined to want to hike the entire way, you can park just over 4,500 meters up and hike from there. It will be chilly, so dress in layers!

10. Take in the view from El Panecillo - This hill offers panoramic 360 degree views of all of Quito, and is a great way to get an idea of how large the city is. The hill marks a division between north and south Quito and is visible from nearly everywhere in the city. There is a large statue of Virgin Mary - a replica of the one inside the Iglesia San Francisco.

When to Visit Quito

Due to its positioning along the Equator, the weather in Quito is extremely temperate. It stays fairly cool throughout the year, and there are only two seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

The dry season, which is classified as “summer” is between June and September. Average high temperatures tend to be in the low 70s (F). Low average temperatures remain in the high 40s F.

The wet season, Quito’s “winter”, lasts from October to May. The average high temperatures are typically in the low 70s and high 60s F. Average low temperatures are typically in the high 40s F.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Non-camping journeys, optional walks, little elevation gain or loss.

Reviews of Small Group tours to Ecuador

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.
This tour is intended for people who are physically fit, able to walk 6 kilometers a day, love to kayak/snorkel/swim/bike, and still have plenty of energy to enjoy the wildlife. I cannot cope up with the group, but luckily our CEO offered me options like museum visit, tour to Tntoreras. I still was able yo see all the wildlife I need to see exvept the cormorant. I did not expect to stay in a 5 star hotel. I find the accommodation suitable enough for my needs: comfortable bed, air condition, water, electricity, wifi. Special thanks to Sandra, CEO. She is one of the best tour guides I met in my years of travel. She is a great listener and teacher. She was born in Santa Cruz. She knows Galapagos like the palm of her hand.
lovely tour - very good itinerary and comfortable pace

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador @WanderingDawn

Ecuador is not just the Gal á pagos! There is so much more to explore in this biodiverse country, and it’s quite cheap too. ($0.25 bus rides, anyone?) Don’t skip out on Quito quickly either. Located 2,850 meters above sea level, Quito is the highest capital city in the world. Sunny days, cool nights and jaw-dropping mountainous surroundings make this city worth a stop. Divided between a historic old town and a more modern downtown, there are plenty of options for any traveler. Just follow the same safety precautions as you would in any big city, and you’ll be sure to enjoy your time.

Here are 7 Awesome Things to do in Quito, Ecuador

1. basílica del voto nacional.

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

The Basilica of the National Vow is a stunning neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church. It’s worth the uphill trek through Old Town to get there! Spend time walking its perimeter and pay close attention to detail. Where gargoyles normally would be, there are sculptures of native Ecuadorian animals. After paying a small fee to enter the basilica ($2), be prepared to scale narrow staircases. There are several lookout points, gift shops, and a cafe with a view along the way. Don’t forget to stop at the large stained glass window for a stunning selfie! Visitors can walk across a wooden plank through the middle of the church to access an adjacent tower. Climbing to the top of this clock tower isn’t for the faint of heart as the staircase is a bit shaky and nearly straight up! The views at the top make it worth the effort.

2. Teleférico (or TelefériQo)

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

After you’ve acclimated to Quito’s elevation, take it up a notch and head even higher in the teleferico , a gondola carrying passengers from 2,950 meters to 4,000 meters in approximately 10 minutes. For the best views and to beat the crowds, take the gondola up early near the 9:00 am opening time. There are shops and restaurants up top in case you need a souvenir, water, or cup of coffee. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see a spectacular view of Quito and six surrounding volcanoes, so it’s worth waiting for perfect conditions if you can swing it. For those looking for a challenge, test out the fairly steep and windy trail leading to the summit of the Pichincha Volcano. This hike is challenging, so give yourself several hours to complete it and bring plenty of water. The cost to ride the teleferico is $8.50 for foreigners. The hike and corresponding pain cave are free.

3.  Free Walking Tour of Old Town

A great way to accustomed to any city, get your feet wet with an official walking tour . Learn about the history of Ecuador and see why Quito’s historic center was proclaimed one of the first UNESCO World Heritage Sites. According to UNESCO, “the city has the best-preserved, least altered historic center in Latin America.” Enjoy strolling through several plazas and churches, and be sure to try a $2 almuerzo for a typical Ecuadorian lunch after your tour!

4. La Mariscal and Plaza Foch

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

The modern part of Quito, La Mariscal, is filled with hostels, tour operators, bars, clubs, and international cuisine. Any type of food you crave, from vegetarian to pizza cones, can be found here. Plaza Foch (also known as zona rosa ) is at the center of it all and is THE place to go out at night. The government has done a good job of cleaning up this part of the city to keep the tourists coming back for more, but always keep a close eye on your personal belongings. Be sure to check out the various specials on ladies’ night (Wednesdays) which is a big night out for locals and tourists alike. Club Bungalow 6 is open downstairs for ladies only from 8-10pm and offers a free open bar.

5. Parque Itchimbía

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

There is no shortage of parks in Quito, each one with its unique charm. Parque Itchimbia is home to the infamous Quito sign, spelled out in large orange block letters. After taking a photo and relaxing in the letter “Q,” hang out at the park and enjoy the view of Old Town below. There’s a glass building atop the hill, Centro Cultural Itchimbia, that hosts a museum and special events as well. Ask locals or check the schedule to see when the park hosts free concerts and yummy food trucks. For the more active traveler, there is a network of walking trails and kid-friendly playgrounds.

6.  Calle La Ronda

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

This narrow pedestrian strip located in Old Town is vehicle free, making it perfect for a daytime stroll and keeping it packed with people at night and on weekends. Enter the local artisan shops, or chat with the street vendors and get serenaded by local musicians. If you’re hungry, stop in one of the many restaurants offering the regional dish locro de papa . This hearty soup is a delicious mix of potato, cheese, and avocado. For dessert, try hot chocolate with a side of cheese. (Yes, cheese!) Just look for cafes that offer chocolate caliente and experience a whole new way of enjoying dark chocolate.

7. El Panecillo

7 Awesome Things to Do in Quito, Ecuador

A bit outside of the City, El Panecillo is a hill located between southern and central Quito. The Virgin Madonna statue marks the top and is said to have wings like an angel. Brings snacks and enjoy a picturesque sunset picnic. Part of the fun is on the way up as you pass through several local neighborhoods and perhaps even get a history lesson from your taxi driver. (Be sure to take an authorized taxi, and don’t walk up alone.)

2. Cultural Walking Tour with Food

TOUR TIMES: 9:00 am & 2:00 pm | RATING : 5.0/5.0 (245/254 5-star reviews) | BOOK YOUR TOUR: VIATOR or GET YOUR GUIDE

For those with more than one day, start your Quito itinerary with a guided walking tour of the historic center . With a 5-star rating and rave reviews, this walking tour is definitely one of the best tours for culture, history, and food lovers. It combines the cultural highlights of Quito with the food of Ecuador .

You’ll get to taste some sweets, chocolate, empanadas , and one of Ecuador’s famous and tasty natural fruit juices . But it is NOT a food tour. If you want a tour that’s more about food, check out the next two Quito tours on this list.

The tour starts at the Basilica . Here, you can take an elevator to the top of its towers for some of the best panoramic views of Quito.

Next, you’ll visit an art gallery displaying indigenous art before heading to the main square of Quito, Plaza Grande .

On the way to the last stop, you’ll walk down the most important street in the city passing by some of the city’s most historic buildings. You’ll stop for empanadas and Quito’s famous natural fruit juices.

The tour ends at the massive Plaza de San Francisco and Yumbos Chocolateria for a chocolate tasting .

You can choose to either do a morning tour at 9:00 am or an afternoon tour at 2:00 pm .

Doing a walking tour of the historic center is one of the must things to do in Quito .

“It was an amazing and must do tour! We loved every second and got so much knowledge and interesting facts about Quito and Ecuador! Ivan, our guide, was fantastic, genuine and had an answer to all our questions! We loved tasting all the different things! Being around a local guide in a foreign city was really special! Thank you so, so much!” Ditte_M ( Read More R eviews )

3. City Highlights and Food Walking Tour

Large white two-story buildings surrounding a plaza filled with trees and people

DURATION: 3.5 hours (10:00 am) | RATING: 4.9/5 | BOOK YOUR TOUR: Get Your Guide

Another tour that combines the cultural highlights of Quito with the food of Ecuador is this fabulous tour with Bondabu .

The tour does both the historic center and some off-the-beaten-path places in the city that tourists rarely visit. And it’s heavier on the food than the previous tour on this list.

The tour starts in the historic center where you’ll see some of the most important plazas and buildings and learn about the history of Quito.

Then the tour travels north and gets more off-the-beaten-path stopping at a local flea market .

Next, you’ll find yourself in local neighborhoods visiting food markets to sample some local fruit and trying some local dishes. You’ll also get to visit a cool street art spot.

The tour ends with a sample of the chocolate that Ecuador is famous for as well as a cocktail or coffee .

On this tour, you’ll do 4 food stops .

I didn’t do this exact tour, but I did another tour with the same company (Bondabu), stopping at some of the same stops. I loved the tour I did with Bondabu, so I’m sure this tour is just as good.

“We had a great time with Ernesto that proposed us a non common touristic tour by showing us the hidden face, but also the authenticity, of Quito. Street art, Street Food, architectural buildings (going from French to Arabic house style), markets used by local people. Everything authentic and nice to see for those who really want to know Quito.” Get Your Guide Traveler ( Read More Reviews )

7. Middle of the World Tour

travel group quito

DURATION: 3 to 4 hours | RATING: 4.5/5 (150+ Reviews) | BOOK YOUR TOUR: Get Your Guide

Is standing on the equator on your travel bucket list?

Luckily, you can easily visit the equator with this inexpens i ve tour to La Mitad del Mundo (Middle of the World), a park located on the outskirts of Quito. The tour is US$19 AND the entrance fee is included in the tour price!

This park contains the Monument to the Equator which marks the exact (not quite) location of the equator can commemorates the eighteenth century Geodesic Expedition from France and Spain that identified the location of the equator. The mission’s measurements led to the creation of the metric system and proved that the Earth is not perfectly round and instead bulges at the equator.

The tour picks you up at specific locations throughout the city. You drive directly to La Mitad del Mundo where you get to freely walk around the park for around 2 hours.

You can climb to the top of the Monument to the Equator for panoramic views. Visit the Ethnographic Museum which exhibits the culture of the indigenous people of Ecuador. Stop by the many souvenir shops.

The most exciting thing to do here is to try to make an egg stand on a nail . Balancing an egg on its head is supposedly easier here than anywhere else because of the strength of the magnetic field at the equator.

Check out this AMAZING Quito itinerary guide for details on how to incorporate a trip to Mitad del Mundo into your visit to Quito.

“Perfect half day tour opportunity and it was the perfect timing. The pick up and drop off worked like a charm and our guide & driver, both made sure it was a comfortable & easy drive to and back from the monument. Was the perfect way to start our Ecuadorian adventures.” Vandy ( Read More Reviews )

“Great way to see Quito Roberto and Milton made the experience great. They know a lot about history wildlife and they take you to city parks that you would never see on any other tour. A few hills. I had to stop and walk the bike but otherwise not difficult” Mbpjchouston ( Read More Reviews )

Quito Travel Guide & FAQs

When should i visit quito.

The temperature in Quito is the same all year round (a high of 66-68 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 47-49 degrees Fahrenheit.) Even though it’s at the equator, it’s at such a high elevation that it never gets hot.

Quito has two rainy seasons :

  • March to May with April being the rainiest
  • October to November.

The best time to visit Quito is from June to August as these are the driest months .

How can I get to Quito?

Arriving in quito by plane.

Most people fly into Mariscal Sucre Airport on the outskirts of Quito.

To find the cheapest flights to Quito, first check Skyscanner . I love using Skyscanner. Whenever I search for flights on Skyscanner , it gives me more results than other travel websites because it includes both major airlines and local budget airlines. I also like how it gives a rating system for each result so I know which booking site to trust and which ones not to. I can book with the airline from Skyscanner as well. Try it out!

Arriving in Quito by Land

If you’re crossing the border from Colombia or Peru, you’ll most likely arrive at the Quitumbe Bus Terminal . Quitumbe is connected to the best areas in Quito to stay in by the new metro line and the trolley line.

Is it safe?

Quitumbe is the beginning of both the metro and trolley line, so you’ll likely get a seat, making it easy to keep an eye on your bags. I’ve taken the trolley to and from Quitumbe, and it felt safe.

How long should I spend in Quito?

I would spend at least 3 days in Quito . Plus, do 2 or 3 days of day trips from Quito. In that way, you can see the major attractions, get a feel for the city without feeling rushed, try some of its delicious Ecuadorian food , and explore a less touristy neighborhood.

An overview of my recommended Quito itinerary:

Day 1: Wander around the historic center and do this walking tour (any order).

Day 2: Take the cable car to Pichincha Volcano and stand on the equator at the Middle of the World with this tour .

Day 3: Explore a less touristy neighborhood of Quito with this street food tour . You can read about my review of the Quito street food tour here.

You can add day trips from Quito on days 4 and 5.

Day 4: Take a day trip to Otavalo with this tour that will also take you to Cayambe, Cotacachi, and Cuicocha.

Day 5: Do another day trip from Quito to Cotopaxi and Qilotoa doing this tour .

Day 6: Rest your weary travel legs at the Papallacta Hot Springs using these instructions on getting to to Papallacta

Is Quito safe?

For most visitors, Quito is a safe place to visit as long as you follow a few precautions.

You’re generally safe walking around during the day. But it’s at night when you need to be extra cautious. At night, take a taxi or Uber to get around in most parts of the city including the historic center. It’s best to avoid walking around at night in the historic center or San Blas.

The historic center has problems with pickpockets and scam artists that target tourists. One common scam is to spill something on you and as the thief is helping you clean yourself, he or she steals your wallet or phone.

Crime has increased in Quito recently. However, statistically, it is safer than Guayaquil. Compared to other cities around the world, it’s got about the same level of crime as Houston, Texas .

How can I get from the airport to my hotel in Quito?

There are several ways to get from the airport to your hotel in Old Town, La Carolina, or La Mariscal:

  • Airport taxi – There’s a taxi desk in the arrivals hall at the Quito airport. Pay the desk for the taxi ride. The price is fixed based on what zone you’re staying in. They accept credit cards. They will then arrange a taxi driver for you. I’ve used this service twice.  (US$30)
  • Arrange an airport pickup with your hotel in Quito. This is what I did when I first arrived in Quito. (US$30)
  • Public Bus – You can take a bus from the airport to 3 bus stations in Quito (Quitumbe Terminal, Rio Coca Terminal, and Carcelén Terminal) (US$2). From any bus terminal, you can take a bus, trolley, the subway, an Uber, or taxi to your hotel or hostel.
  • Private Transfer Service – You can arrange one through Get Your Guide (US$40 for 1 person or US$45 for 2 people) or Viator (US$36 for 1 person or US$40 for 2 people)
  • Rent a car – You can book your rental with Discover Cars . (US$77 – $100/day)

Where should I stay in Quito?

I recommend staying in the historic center (also called Old Town) for its beauty, culture, food, and convenience.

The best website for booking hotels in Quito is Booking.com . They usually have the best selection and the best rates.

I wrote an article on the best places to stay in Quito . But for those who want a quick recommendation of my favorite hotels in Quito , here it is:

BEST HOSTEL: Viajero Quito Hostel

BEST HOTELS UNDER US$40: Traveler’s House ,   TERRA PREMIUM & Posada del Maple

BEST HOTELS US$40 – $100: Friends Hotel & Rooftop & Chakana Hotel Boutique

BEST HOTEL US$100 – $200: Casa Joaquin Boutique Hotel

BEST HOTEL US$200 – $300: Casa El Edén

BEST HOTEL OVER US$300:   Hotel Casa Gangotena & Illa Experience Hotel

Wherever you stay, try to get a place with a rooftop terrace for views of the city and mountains . You can check out my Quito accommodation guide for a list of the best hotels with rooftop terraces.

Where can I find an ATM in Quito?

There are 3 major banks in Quito :

  • Banco Pichincha – Transaction fee is US$4.50
  • Banco Guayaquil – It has the cheapest transaction fee of US$1.50

I had a lot of problems getting ATMs in Quito to accept my debit card from the U.S. When I was in the Galapagos, I used an ATM. No money came out , but my bank still processed the transaction. It took me a long time to get the bank to sort it out and agree to cancel the transaction.

I had the best luck getting money from this ATM at the Santa Maria Supermarket in the historic center and from Banco Pichincha in La Mariscal . The weird thing was that the ATM at Banco Pichincha in the historic center never worked for me.

Where can I get a SIM card in Quito?

Three mobile phone companies sell SIM cards and data:

I used Claro in Ecuador and got my SIM card from a phone shop in the historic center. It cost me US$20 for the card and 30 days of 12 GB of data . However, I was probably overcharged. According to the Claro website , this is the rate for prepaid SIMs:

  • US$5 for 15 days and 5 GB
  • US$10 for 30 days and 12 GB
  • US$15 for 30 days and 20 GB

Whenever I added more data and days onto my SIM card, I paid US$10 and sometimes a US$1 fee depending on the shop.

The phone shop I bought my card from was across the street from the Santa Maria Supermarket .

However, for convenience , you can get an eSIM instead. You don’t have to worry about changing SIM cards. Use Airalo to buy your eSIM. They have eSIMS for many different countries around the world. Their prices are pretty good .

15 Fun Things to do in Quito, Ecuador on a Family Vacation

A ll travel to Ecuador begins and ends in Quito, Ecuador. This capital city sits at an elevation of 9,350’, nestled in the towering Andean Mountains and there are lots of things to do in Quito, Ecuador on a family vacation before you head out to explore more of the country such as the Galapagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, or the Andes.

On one side, Volcano Guagua Pichincha rises high above the city and on the other, Panecillo and Ichimbia. Enveloped in the long narrow crease between these mountains is a city with origins dating back to the Incan empire.

Many visitors to Quito barely spend a full day barely scratching the surface of this remarkable city. However, it’s a huge mistake to gloss over Quito  in your eagerness to fly on to the Galapagos.

I was fortunate enough to meet our friend Jorge Perez. His family owns an Ecuadorian guest ranch called Tierra Del Volcan at the foothills of Cotopaxi. He encouraged us to spend more time in the Andes as their guest.

We were also fortunate to have been able to experience Ecuador working with Metropolitan Touring , an Ecuadorian-owned full-service travel operator. They provided us with significant discounts to experience their properties and tours.

Things to do in Quito, Ecuador on a Family Vacation

What makes quito, ecuador such a special city.

When Spanish conquistadors discovered Quito, they too were wowed by its beauty. This mountainous area is a place of tremendous beauty with steep streets, staircases, and homes stacked one on top of the other.

The city sprawls up the hillsides from the central artery of the city, Mariscal Sucre Street. Building a colonial city on this terrain offered many challenges. Nonetheless, the Spanish brought their European city planning sensibilities and erected a network of narrow streets and spacious colonial squares.

The architectural style of the historic district is unique to Quito. It is described as the “Baroque School of Quito”. Old town Quito was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1978.

Walking through the Old Town District, you might think you were in a European town. But the next moment, you are mingling with locals clothed in traditional Ecuadorian dress and surrounded by shops packed with local wares.

This is the charm of Ecuador. It is a delightful juxtaposition of old and new, tribal and colonial, highlands and oceans. The list of dynamic contrasts is endless. A large part of a visiting Quito is just about being in a very unique place. We loved people watching in her squares, exploring down her narrow streets, and digging deeper.

Explore more of the country! Here is how to visit the Amazon in Ecuador .

1. Roam the Streets of Old Town Quito, Ecuador like a Local

Old Town Quito isn’t just one big history museum. Its narrow streets are packed with locals going about their everyday lives.

The ground floors of the 3-4 story buildings have little storefronts selling everything under the sun. From huge bags of colorful potatoes to bundles of herbs in every strange scent. Crafts people make and sell embroidered shoes, felt hats, and religious icons.

Weaving between the cars and people along these tight streets makes entering one of the spacious colonial squares a delight. The squares are lined with street vendors selling seasonal fruit, quail eggs, or a shoe shine.

You can certainly roam the streets of Old Town Quito on your own, but I highly recommend Metropolitan Touring’s “Live Quito Like a Local” walking tour .

We met up with a local host who lives in Old Town Quito and she took us to visit her friends. We got to learn about their businesses and way of life. Without her, we might have felt too shy to stop at many of these places.

This included the only remaining flour mill in the city where farmers still bring small batches of grain to be milled every day. We also visited a family who repairs religious statues, a craft passed down from generation to generation.

Climb the Spires of Basílica del Voto Nacional and Search for Animal Gargoyles

With over 200 churches and religious buildings in one city, it would be overwhelming for kids to visit more than a handful. However, Basicilica de Voto Nacional is a must see.

Our kids loved the adrenaline rush of climbing up to the very tippy top of a church spire. All the while, keeping their eyes peeled for animal gargoyles featuring local Ecuadorian wildlife.

If you have little ones, keep a close eye on them and skip climbing to the very top where ladders get super steep. I confess, my knees were shaking and I was glad for an excuse to stay with our five-year-old.

Learn to Spin a Wooden Top and Enjoy some of the World’s Best Chocolate in La Rhonda

A stroll down Juan de Dios Morales Street is a walk down history lane. Also known as La Rhonda, this street was once an old Incan trail that was used to transport water to homes from a nearby creek. But in more recent history, La Rhonda gained a reputation as the Bohemian district where the fringes of society reside.

This area, once in disrepair, has received a face lift. It is now home to boutique hotels, clubs, novelty stores, and trendy restaurants. A visit with kids must include a stop at Heladería Dulce Placer and a visit to the award-winning Pacari chocolate factory. Then stop at the delightful Zabalartes toy store. You’ll find a wide selection of handcrafted tops and wooden toys and the kids can learn how to spin a top.

Visit the Quito Central Market to Enjoy an Exotic Local Fruit

The center of any city is the market, and in Quito, this is where the locals shop for their food. Our kids always love tasting exotic looking local fruit and looking at funny things like chickens with feet sticking up in the air.

There are also a few traditional healers in the central market selling a wide array of medicinal herbs to cure any manner of spiritual or physical ailment.

Get a Herbal Cleansing (limpiadores) from a Traditional Female Healer

When local Ecuadorians have a spiritual or physical ailment, they don’t go rushing off to the doctor’s office. Instead, they first visit a curandero, a traditional female healer who can cleanse you with a combination of “magical” plants.

She learns her craft from her mother and the knowledge is passed down from one generation to the next. The walls of her store are lined with cubbies stuffed with bunches of fresh herbs. And she seems to be a lexicon of healing properties locked within each herb.

A cleansing involves her rubbing these herbs all over your skin and may even include a prescription for a bitter concoction to drink. Our son who had been having a stomachache was thrust into her care. He wasn’t so amused, but we were.

Visit the Winged Virgin at the Top of Quito El Panecillo

It’s hard to miss the huge statue of the winged virgin on a hill from just about anywhere in Quito. Standing at an impressive 135ft tall, you’ll see that she is crowned with stars, angelic wings, and is standing on a snake.

You’ll also be rewarded with one of the best 360-degree views of picturesque Quito and her surrounding volcanoes. Visit in the morning when you are least likely to have clouds obscuring your views. The walk up the little bun (Panecillo) is a bit much for the kids, and some say it can be dangerous, so take a taxi up.

Ride into the Clouds on the Pichincha Teleférico

Pichincha Teleférico, ahigh altitude cable car ride, will take you from to 9,514’ to 13,451’ in 18 minutes. It’s a thrill to ride up on this steep cable car and an opportunity to say you’ve been above 13,000’.

At the top of the Teleférico, there are hiking trails and inexpensive horseback rides to enjoy the views. There could not be a more spectacular place on earth to enjoy a horseback ride. Be prepared for the high altitude. Drink lots of water, apply sunscreen, and bring extra layers to keep you warm.

Visit a Gold-gilded Church – Ingelsia de la Compañía de Jesús

The other church that grabbed our kids’ attention is the gold-gilded Ingelsia de la Compañía de Jesús, Quito. Entry is free, but photography inside the church is not allowed.

This ornate baroque-style church was built in 1605 by the Jesuits and took 163 years to build. A full restoration in 2006 included the addition of seven tons of gold leaf. The kids were very impressed by all the bling.

See Some Old Money at Museo Numismática Banco Central

Our kids were surprised to discover that Ecuador uses the American dollar after it abandoned its own currency. It was a result of a severe financial crisis in 2000.

One place you can still see an Ecuadorian Sucre (pictured above) is at the Museo Numismática Banco Central (Numismatic Museum) in Quito, located in the former Banco Central del Ecuador in Old Town Quito. All the informational placards are in Spanish, but it was still interesting to see the currencies dating back to the Spanish conquest.

Visit the Home of a National Hero – Museo Casa de Sucre

It’s hard not to be curious about what’s behind those small doors as you walk through Old Town Quito. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of some beautiful Spanish courtyards.

If you are really curious about getting behind those secretive doors, you can visit José Antonio Sucre’s House . Sucre is a national hero for his role in liberating South America from Spanish occupation. His house, La Casa de Sucre, in Old Town Quito is now a museum furnished as he would have had it in the 1820’s.

Go Underground into the Burial Crypt at Metropolitana de Quito

Quito is home to numerous monasteries, convents, churches, and grand cathedrals. The magnificent Catedral Metropolitana de Quito (Cathedral of Quito), allows you to descend underground into a catacomb crypt and take a tour with a friar.

Thread through tight passageways up to the roof for a stunning view of Quito. The national hero Antonio José de Sucre is buried here.

Dine on a Rooftop to the Twinkling Lights of Quito

A fun way to experience Quito with kids is dining on the rooftop at the Vista Hermosa restaurant in the Old Town district.

Ride up to the rooftop in an old elevator and be greeted by wait staff with elaborately painted faces. The menu has local favorites as well as kid-favorites like pizza and pasta.

Stand at the Center at of the Earth at the Equatorial Divide

Apparently finding the exact line of the equatorial divide isn’t the easiest thing in the world. At Mitad del Mundo , the official monument was erected. However, with the arrival of GPS technology, it was confirmed that the real equatorial divide is actually a few hundred meters up the street next to the Museo de Sitio Intiñan (Intinan Solar Museum).

It is a fun place to visit with kids because of the hands-on experiments that demonstrate some of the unique phenomenon that happens at the equator , including the Coriolis effect. The museum also features a few exhibits about native peoples of the Andes.

Go Where the Local Families Love to Hang Out

We always love getting off the tourist track, so I asked the Perez family to share some places that local families enjoy.

“Yaku Parque Museo Del Agua (Yaku Water Museum), has one of the best views of old town Quito. It is fun for the children because they have the opportunity to learn about the water cycle in the Andes in a very interactive way.

The giant soap bubbles are at  Zoológico de Quito  (Quito Zoo), but it’s also a fun place to try some local fruits which are plentiful in this area. The Quito Zoo is a good place for kids to get up close to animals from the Andes and the Amazon Basin.”

Quito, Ecuador is a city full of culture and history. Here are the best things to do in Quito, Ecuador on a family vacation before you head off and explore further.

Millennials and Gen Zers want human connection, so they're choosing travel tours with strangers to cure their loneliness

  • Intrepid Travel said young people are seeking immersive, non-traditional vacation experiences.
  • Millennials share more travel similarities with Gen Z travelers than previous generations.
  • Young travelers are prioritizing interest-based travel over destination-based travel.

Insider Today

Young people are seeking more human connection in the post-lockdown era, so they're embracing small-group travel.

Modern technology and social media apps have created a hyper-connected world, but many millennials and Gen Zers say the focus on screens has caused an epidemic of loneliness .

While New apps and local community groups are trying to address this "social distance" problem, some young people are choosing to book their vacations with strangers to find more face-to-face camaraderie.

Intrepid Travel, which organizes small-group experiences in over 100 countries, including Morocco and Sri Lanka, says it's seen a growing interest from young people in these kinds of group tours.

"They're prioritizing travel over buying houses, mortgages, and other expenses," Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel's president of the Americas, told Business Insider.

Group travel can be hit-or-miss with people. They can conjure an image of 40-plus tourists being led off a bus to an overcrowded attraction by their shouting tour guide.

But Berna said Intrepid Travel's focus on small group experiences is the opposite. The average Intrepid Travel group has 10 people.

"It allows us to travel like locals," Berna said. "We eat in small local restaurants. We stay in family-owned hotels. We typically avoid mass market tourism, hotels, or experiences."

It also allows people to form new bonds in a tight-knit setting, which young travelers crave, after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Camaraderie in a group is so special because you make great friendships and share laughs and stories," Berna said.

Related stories

Berna said these unique experiences are popular with 18 to 29-year-olds — Intrepid Travel's core audience. Experiences are designed with young travelers in mind, offering more free time to explore on their own and more active outings.

Berna said Intrepid Travel began receiving requests from people in their 30s looking for adventures off the beaten path. Millennials traditionally valued experience-driven opportunities , and that desire hasn't waned with time.

"It became clear that millennials are aging, but the style they want to travel is immersive," Berna said. "If anything, they resonated more with Gen Z than the generations above them."

American Express Travel's 2023 Global Travel Trends Report found nearly 80% of millennials and Gen Zers respondents said they want to "partake in a day in the life of locals in the destination they are visiting," pointing toward activities like visiting local cultural sites and "hole-in-the-wall" attractions.

Airbnb, owned by millennial billionaire Brian Chesky , reported in 2020 that it also found that "immersive encounters" were becoming more popular with this generation, with interest up 102% year-to-year.

Older generations, Berna said, book vacations based on destination. Older travelers tend to plan vacations around conventional tourist spots — think the Eiffel Tower in Paris — because it's popular.

However, younger travelers don't have the same sense of FOMO — or "the fear of missing out" — that their parents do. Instead, they book vacations by interest.

At Intrepid Travel, that includes cycling enthusiasts traveling to Vietnam to peddle through the local sites. Experiences based on camping, festivals, and food are also options travelers can explore.

"They want to be a trendsetter going to the next cool place," Berna said. "It will be something new you can share with your friends, so you get the bragging rights. It's a bit more adventurous instead of following the crowd."

After conducting consumer research among its more than 300,000 travelers, Intrepid Travel formally expanded the young trip age range to 35 in February.

"Intrepid identified an opportunity to better cater for an expanded age range after experiencing a rise in inquiries from travelers in their early 30s wanting to join Intrepid's young adult trips," a press release said. "The company conducted extensive consumer research which showed that most travelers aged 18 to 35 prefer to travel with those of a similar age."

As for where travelers are going, Berna said South America has emerged as a top contender, with Peru gaining traction. The country closed its tourist attractions amid political unrest from late 2022 to early 2023, but they reopened in February 2023, according to Travel Weekly .

Another top spot is South Korea, which Berna said is typically more affordable than Japan. Intrepid Travel said they saw 172% increase globally in bookings to South Korea from 2022 to 2023.

"People want to go away and have these stories. They've settled back post-pandemic into feeling life, wanting to travel again, and seeking connection," Berna said. "Not just with other travelers in groups but with destinations."

What It Means To Add Expedia’s Travel Assistant Romie to Your Group Chat

Elizabeth Casolo , Skift

June 4th, 2024 at 1:07 PM EDT

You can invite generative AI assistant Romie to join your travel-planning group chat. It’s too early to tell if it will be a welcome guest.

Elizabeth Casolo

Expedia Group’s generative AI travel assistant Romie could join your trip-planning group chat.

During the Skift Data + AI Summit Tuesday, Expedia Group’s Chief Architect Rajesh Naidu spoke about the company’s burgeoning AI tools and what they could mean for travelers.

For example, when you add Romie to a messaging chat in WhatsApp or iMessage , it can step in with personalized recommendations based on your texts, even helping to rearrange itineraries if something interrupts your vacation. Romie is still in its early stages — in alpha testing under EG Labs.

According to Expedia Group’s website , Romie can also serve as concierge and keep your loved ones informed on your travel status.

Here is an example Expedia Group shared with Skift. Say you’re planning a family trip to Chicago, and one person is interested in dinosaurs. If those details come up in a group chat that includes Romie, the assistant will recommend museums and experiences in the city catered to dinosaur enthusiasts.

“[Romie] is actually looking at the conversation with intent and understanding,” Naidu said. “So group chat planning is a big thing.”

Naidu acknowledged how some are skeptical about the future of AI-powered travel assistants. But he believes Romie’s ability to evaluate a conversation can help.

“[A traditional chatbot] doesn’t know anything about you. It doesn’t know your preferences. It doesn’t understand… the context,” Naidu said. “I think what’s different… with Romie is something that is going to learn from you and is going to be alongside you and also get smart intelligence over time.”

Some travelers may be wary of letting an AI guest enter their group chat. Skift asked if privacy could be a concern.

“We are asking you to add it to the context of the travel conversation, so there is a burden also on the traveler,” Naidu said. “The second thing is we also have guardrails on our end.”

Naidu added the company has to “stay ahead” to avoid running into privacy issues.

Data and AI Beyond Romie

Romie isn’t Expedia Group’s only AI application. Naidu said Expedia Group is using AI tools to help lodging and hospitality partners improve their content strategy. By analyzing bookings, traveler feedback, and refund data, Expedia Group can offer input on their partners’ content.

Expedia Group is also focusing on content for vacation rentals specifically.

“Property owners or property managers are submitting listing descriptions and things like that, taking advantage of generative AI and other things to do better summarization augmentation of these descriptions and content,” Naidu said.
