If there’s one portable hammock stand I recommend to those who own multiple hammocks, it would be the Sunnydaze Universal Hammock Stand .

I recommend the Sunnydaze to that kind of hammock enthusiast because of how versatile it is. It has two S hooks, two heavy-hanging hooks, and two chains. 

Many hammock styles can fit on the Sunnydaze hammock stand. I love using it in my own backyard but sometimes, I even bring it on my car camping trips.

What I don’t like is how big the carry case is.

For this guide, I consulted with backpacking and camping experts at the Mountain Shop in Portland, Oregon, the oldest outdoor store of its kind in the city. I spoke with Gary Lawton , an accomplished hiker who has successfully completed the triple crown of thru-hikes (the Pacific Crest Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and the Appalachian Trail). I also spoke with Steve Korpi , the camping gear buyer for the Mountain Shop. Korpi curated the store’s selection of packable hammocks, so he knows a lot about them. Finally, I chatted with Seth Haber , the founder of Trek Light Gear, to understand the biggest misconceptions about hammocks.

As for me, I’ve written several Wirecutter outdoors guides so far, my favorite of which was all about telescopes . I also managed the Outdoors Gear Cooperative at my college. And before that I was the kid in high school who petitioned his parents to ditch his bed and instead sleep full time in a hammock. While more sensible heads prevailed and I kept my bed in its rightful place, I never let go of my love for the simplicity of swinging in a hammock—to me, if feels like being rocked in a cradle or gently floating out in the ocean. Since those early years, I have gone on to use hammocks endlessly in my travels across South America, Europe, and the US.

I’ve also suffered from chronic lower back pain for most of my adult life due to an accident that occurred many years ago, so I’ve turned to hammocks time and again for an important reason: They relieve the pressure on my back, which is often made worse by sitting in a normal chair. I am also 6-foot-2, so I was able to test out the hammocks with the slightly taller user in mind.

For this guide, we decided to focus on single, packable camping hammocks for people who want the best of both worlds in terms of comfort and portability. These hammocks are primarily meant for lounging, not sleeping, although you can easily catch some shut-eye in a packable hammock in good weather. If you do plan to sleep in any of our picks, see our notes in the Hammock extras section about what else you'll need to bring along.

Why focus on camping hammocks, specifically? Seth Haber, founder of Trek Light Gear, argues in a company blog post that if your traditional image of a hammock is thick rope construction and two wooden spreader bars, you’ve been brainwashed . Haber said thick rope hammocks are more prone to flipping over and in reality, they’re less comfortable and less practical than the packable models we’ve reviewed here. Lightweight camping hammocks, on the other hand, are traditionally made from nylon or polyester. They’re much more akin to the traditional style of hammock that millions of people throughout Central and South America sleep in every night. You can definitely set up these compact hammocks in your backyard, but we like that they can easily be packed up and transported to your favorite destination, too.

We chose to review only single camping hammocks, rather than doubles, because our experts told us that most of these models can actually fit two or more people (our testing proved that in most cases, this is true). Single hammocks also pack down smaller, making them a better choice for day hikers and beachgoers. However, double hammocks might be worth a look if you’re planning to frequently sleep in your hammock overnight, or if you plan to sleep in the hammock with someone else. “The extra width [of the double hammock] is what allows your body to get flat and overcome the C-shaped curve of the hammock,” Haber said.

The buck for this guide doesn’t stop at adults, though: When we set up our hammocks in a park for testing, young kids came running. They piled in and refused to stop swinging—and all of the hammocks in our testing pool proved their mettle in this first durability challenge. So whether you’re tailgating, heading to a family event, hiking backcountry trails, looking for some relaxation at the beach, or hoping for a makeshift swing for your kids, these hammocks are for you.

First, I scoured the Internet, wading through all of the reviews and recommendations I could find from reputable sources. Next, I interviewed camping and hammocking experts Gary Lawton and Steve Korpi from the Mountain Shop in Portland, Oregon. I also got some expert advice and analysis from Seth Haber, the founder of Trek Light Gear. In our efforts to be as thorough as possible, we also pored over other hammock reviews from CleverHiker , GearLab , and The Adventure Junkies .

Next, I took into account each hammock’s price, weight, weight-bearing capacity, dimensions, material construction, and available attachment systems. Based on all that research, we decided that the best camping hammocks needed to be comfortable, water-resistant, durable, and secure in their attachment systems. Bonus points were given for stylishness and ease of set up. Unfortunately, we did not find any hammock models that included high-quality suspension straps, so we researched and tested straps, too.

After the research phase, I ended up with 10 models to test for versatility, comfort, and ease of use.

First, I removed each hammock from its package and examined the stitching and materials. Was the fabric abrasive? Did the stitched seams feel raised and harsh, or were they smoothly woven into the hammock’s design?

Next, I set up all the hammocks in my yard. I didn’t know much about hammock design when I started this guide, but I had each of the 10 models up and ready to go in less than two minutes without any significant problems. Each hammock in our testing pool can be easily pulled out of a stuff sack, allowing it to go from packed to unfolded in a matter of seconds. After the hammock was fully spread out, I slung the hammock straps around two trees, clipped the carabiner (or hook, depending on the model) from the hammock to the suspension strap, and adjusted the height to get it fairly taut and ready for use.

If you plan to take your hammock outdoors, it will need to withstand the elements—so I started my durability tests by laying out the hammocks, spraying them with water, and leaving them to sit in direct Southern California sunlight for a week to see if they would fade or discolor. This also helped me judge how the different hammock materials handled getting soaked, and I was happy with how well most of the hammocks beaded water rather than allowing it to penetrate the material and drench the fabric.

I know how hard it can be to follow best practices for packing a hammock—after a long backpacking trip, I’m not very likely to lay the hammock out to dry before packing it up again. So to test how the hammocks might deal with this all-too-common issue, I packed damp hammocks in their bags and let them sit for a week before unpacking them and giving them a good whiff. All passed the smell test.

I also took the hammocks to Forest Cove Park in Agoura Hills, California, where I got feedback from all kinds of random passersby. The kids at the park took fondly to swinging in the hammocks, but adults also hopped in, many of them reminiscing about childhood memories of family picnics with hammocks. I crowdsourced valuable opinions that day, gathering input about which hammocks felt the most comfortable and secure for many different body types.

Finally, a friend and I (both of us are tall, adult men) piled into each single hammock to ensure that they could withstand some extra weight. While some hammocks definitely felt more comfortable and secure than others with two adults, I’m happy to report that there were no hammock failures or ground falls during our testing.

It can be used in any context, ranging from a permanent backyard setup, to car camping, to backcountry travel. When fully set up, the SingleNest measures out to 9 feet, 4 inches by 4 feet, 7 inches. This size gives some welcome extra legroom for those of us who are 6-plus feet tall, while still curving around enough to be form-fitting for shorter people, too.

Made of 70-denier high-tenacity nylon taffeta and weighing 1 pound, this robust hammock is also rated to support up to 400 pounds safely, which was more than many of the other hammocks we tested. When we put two adult men in the ENO hammock together, this weight limit proved to be true—we swung safely and it was by far the most comfortable option for two people.

Compared with most other hammocks we tested, the SingleNest felt especially comfortable and breathable on hot summer days. Unlike with other models, we were able to lay in the hammock in just a bathing suit without the hammock feeling abrasive on the skin or the nylon material getting too sticky with our sweat.

The SingleNest also packs down easily because of a multipurpose stuff sack that goes above and beyond. Unlike other comparable models, the SingleNest stuff sack comes with compression straps that shrink the hammock to nearly softball size (4 inches by 5 inches). When set up, the stuff sack serves another purpose, too, hanging attached to the middle of the hammock and acting as a great pouch to store snacks, your phone, or other small gear. Putting something with a little weight in the stuff sack even allows you to fold the sack over the hammock for cocoon-style protection from the sun or bugs.

The SingleNest also proved to be exceedingly durable during testing. The nylon material performed especially well on our water tests, beading water and not soaking through, even under the spray from a hose. The SingleNest is triple-stitched at the seams for reinforcement, making it feel more sturdy—and yet, unlike some of the other stitched models, the seams were not very noticeable or abrasive on the skin.

One thing to remember is that you will need to buy suspension straps separately for this hammock (this was the case with all the hammocks we tested). To attach the hammock to suspension straps, the ENO SingleNest offers small aluminum wire gate carabiners at the end of a short nautical-grade cord to make for easy and secure setup options. Compared with the open-ended S-hook attachments on some of the other models we tested, these carabiners snap completely shut and hook firmly on the hanging straps, giving you an extra layer of security when swinging in your hammock. And when compared with the stainless steel carabiners of some other models, the SingleNest aluminum carabiners promoted smoother action, meaning they were less prone to getting jammed.

The icing on the cake: The SingleNest comes in nearly a dozen color schemes, giving you many color combinations by which to express your personality. While stylishness is not essential to a hammock’s function, we were surprised by how many people noticed this hammock’s fun colors while trying it out.

Overall, the SingleNest is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive lightweight nylon hammock we tested, but the way it handles the core details of comfort, safety, durability, and style makes it our top pick.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

This hammock doesn’t come with suspension straps for hanging the hammock. This is not a problem with just the SingleNest, of course, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying. You should also keep in mind that the SingleNest is really made with a single user in mind. We found that sometimes we wanted to pile an extra person in—and while it can support the weight, it just isn't designed for a long two-person hang. That’s why ENO makes the DoubleNest (check that one out if you’re looking for a high-quality two-person hammock). It’s also worth noting that compared with cotton material, the ENO’s nylon might tear slightly more easily.

Grand Trunk’s Ultralight Starter Hammock weighs 12 ounces, offering a nice, lightweight option for newbies who are looking for an affordable hammock to try out occasionally. It measures 9 feet, 6 inches by 4 feet, 6 inches, but it has a 200 pound weight limit. With its polyester taffeta construction, this hammock also stretches less than the other nylon-based models (which means it’s about half as strong).

On the plus side, polyester is super water resistant which meant that even after leaving this hammock outside for three weeks in Portland, Oregon, it showed little evidence of being weather worn. With S-hook attachments and a relatively thin-feeling material, this budget option definitely feels less strong than our top pick and less durable than our runner-up—but for its weight and price tag, the Ultralight Starter Hammock from Grand Trunk is a nice place from which to launch a new hammock obsession.

During my research, I quickly found that most hammocks don’t come with high-quality hammock straps. While you can certainly fashion your own hammock hanging straps out of spare rope or cord for a fraction of the price, hanging your hammock with nicer suspension straps is a safer and more durable option.

During my hammock testing, I also took a look at some of the most popular hammock straps on the market. I tested each set of straps with all of the different hammocks I had, working to understand how much weight they could support and how durable they felt. Most hammock straps work with any hammock—although our Sea to Summit pick requires that you use the company’s proprietary straps.

There are several designs of hammock straps on the market: daisy chain–style suspension straps, and thinner cord-style straps with knots tied every few inches. If you’re looking to buy a set of straps, I recommend gravitating toward the daisy chain style—I found them to be the most durable and versatile option of the two because they extend longer distances and offer exponentially more preset options to clip into. With this many loops, you can make micro-adjustments to the hanging height of the hammock, leading to the most comfortable hanging position possible.

The daisy-chain straps we liked during our testing— Rallt’s Hammock Straps , which offered good value for their price and versatility, the slightly burlier HangTight Hammock Straps from Nature’s Hangout, and the HangTight XL , which worked well for wider distances or larger trees—are back in stock after pandemic-related shortages. We also like similar straps from both ENO and Grand Trunk , but their higher price tags seem unjustified.

Due to hammocks being suspended in the air, you’re also likely to lose some extra heat while lounging—so if you’re purchasing a hammock as a primary sleeping space, you may also want to add insulating layers to keep yourself warm. We didn’t include these extras in this guide, but hammock experts say that carrying a pad, a tarp cover, and some extra insulation can make sleeping more pleasant. Be wary, though, as all of these extra pieces can add up in weight and can actually make your hammock system heavier than a comparable ground setup.

Good hammocks should be easy to set up and take down. After one or two trial runs, you should be able to go from a fully packed hammock and strap set to a fully ready lounger in less than two minutes, no problem. The hardest part of the setup process is finding two trees or fixtures that are both the proper distance apart from one another and can also support your weight in the hammock.

To start out, find two suspension points that are 10 to 20 feet apart and that are thick enough to support the weight of you in your hammock. Be sure to use tree-protector straps that are wide enough so as to not dig into the bark—otherwise, the straps can cause permanent damage to the tree. ENO’s video guide to responsible hammocking practices is a great place to start. After using your hammock for a while, you’ll start to get a feel for the best distances to look for between trees or poles for hanging your hammock. But while you’re getting started, you can also check out this awesome Hammock Hang Calculator . Just plug in your weight and the distance between your attachment points and the guide will calculate how high to set your suspension points.

Inevitably, your hammock will be exposed to the elements while in use. Whether someone accidentally drags their muddy shoes onto your hammock or spills their morning coffee before they’ve fully woken up, you may have to wash your hammock every once in a while to keep it looking and feeling fresh. To wash your hammock, simply remove the carabiners or attachment hooks, add a small amount of detergent to a washing machine, and wash your hammock by itself using cool water on a delicate wash cycle. To keep your hammock clean and smell free, you’ll want to make sure it’s dry before storing it in its stuff sack for extended periods of time.

Wise Owl Outfitters Single : This model doesn’t come with any kind of carabiner or attachment device—instead, basic cords act as tree straps, to which you’re supposed to attach your hammock with knots. This feels less stable and also means extended setup times. Plus, the hammock itself didn’t stand up to the comfort of our top picks due to its more abrasive raised stitching.

Fox Outfitters Neolite Single : Compared with its competitors, this model’s carabiners are of poorer quality, which makes the hammock itself less durable and less safe. Plus, the materials on this hammock felt more abrasive on the skin compared with the silkier feelings of our winners.

Hummingbird Single+ : This hammock is ultralight and easy to set up. But during our multiple outings with the Single+ and its unbelievably lightweight Hummingbird Tree Straps, we repeatedly heard from our testers that this model was less comfortable and the attachment system more concerning than its competitors due to its minimalist connection to the tree straps.

Rallt Single Hammock : This hammock initially led the pack on comfort and affordability, but it tanked during our water and spillage-based tests. Instead of repelling and beading away even the slightest amount of water, this model absorbed the liquids and stayed soaked for longer than any other models.

Kammok Wallaby: Weighing just 10 ounces, this is a solid lightweight option—but at only 8 feet and change in length, it left something to be desired in allowing tall people to fully stretch out. Kammok has, since our original testing, discontinued the Wallaby. A newer hammock called the Roo weighs about the same, but it’s just as short. The company also offers a “ double XL ,” which is 11 feet, 6 inches long.

The idyllic scene of a hammock usually involves two palm trees and a picturesque view across the ocean or rainforest. But we all know that in reality, it’s not always as insta-worthy. Sometimes you just need a simple set up that doesn’t rely on perfectly placed posts. Well, that’s possible thanks to portable hammock stands.

I’ve purchased some stands that I’ve been testing out and in this guide, I’ll share the key things to look out for, plus my top recommended portable hammock stands for your next adventure.

Here are some quick tips and things to look out for when buying a portable hammock stand:

• Hammock Size: Without stating the obvious too much, you need to ensure the hammock stand is the right size, especially if you plan to use your own hammock. When hanging your hammock from posts or trees, you would typically look for a distance that’s 2ft greater than your hammock. With stands, this isn’t always the case as the stand design has an impact. Look for the manufacturer’s recommended hammock size, sometimes this will be a range if the stand has various points of connection.
• Weigh Capacity: All hammock stands, whether portable or not, will have a weight limit stated by the manufacturer. This is worth taking note of, especially if you’re likely to lie in the hammock with more than one person.
• Is the Hammock Included? Some portable hammock stands come with an included or may only be suitable for one type of hammock. If you plan to use your own hammock, make sure it’s a suitable stand for this. If the hammock is included, make sure the material is right for you (see my full guide on this ).
• Portability: A portable hammock needs to be easy to set up and put away, plus light to carry. The weight that’s acceptable will depend on how you plan to use the hammock. If you will be carrying it for long distances then you’ll want a lighter stand than if you’ll be leaving it in your car or truck.

Let’s have a look at these recommendations in detail along with the pros and cons for each stand.

Best Overall: Sunny Daze Portable Stand

This stand from Sunny Daze is a slightly more portable version of their top-selling universal stand that I rated as my overall best hammock stand . The portable stand is 10ft long with a capacity of 300lbs and with the dual-legged design is ideal for softer ground such as sand or gravel.

The reason this is my top stand is for its versatility, it’s one of the only stands that can be used for both gathered-end hammocks (such as Brazilian-style hammocks or camping hammocks ) and spreader bar hammocks.

It’s really quick to put up and take down in less than 5 minutes, and the quick-lock system means you don’t need any screws or tools so there is never anything to lose. There are 8 pieces in total that weigh just 19lbs so it’s easy to take around.

It’s made from steel tube framing which is durable, although despite big claims from the manufacturer that it’s rust-resistant, it can start to rust if frequently left out in the rain. One saving grace about a 2 legged stand is that you don’t’ stub your toe on the legs as you might find with the 4 leg stands!

The Kammok Swiftlet is my premium pick because it’s super portable compared to the others here. This is because it’s made from aluminum rather than steel like most other portable stands so it weighs just 15lbs and comes with a portable carry case. There are no tools required as every piece just slides into place, you don’t even need to put any screws in.

One of the best features about the Swiftlet compared to the other portable hammock stands is that it has a chair mode. Simply swap out the long base bar for a shorter one and you can use it as a chair with the same hammock. Here’s a side-by-side image to show the two different modes.

When in lounge mode, the Kammok Swiftlet is suitable for hammocks between 8-11ft long and has a weight capacity of 300lbs which is suitable for one person. The design of the stand with Y-shaped arms means it can only be used with gathered-end hammocks, I’d recommend pairing it with their Kammok Roo single hammock.

Best Space Saving Stand: Vivere

The Vivere space-saving hammock stand is one that I frequently use in my back garden or when I’m traveling to my parent’s house. It’s a 4-legged stand design with forks on the top making it best suited for non-spreader bar hammocks such as Mayan and Brazilian. The Vivere stand assembles in just a few minutes and doesn’t require any tools at all. There’s a full demonstration video on the amazon product page that shows it being put together.

It comes with one of Vivere’s cozy double hammocks which is what they are best known for. You have the choice to choose between cotton, polyester or sunbrella (see more on choosing hammock material ) and there are more than 30 patterns to choose between.

The stand is 9ft long and has a 450lb capacity and manages this with ease, I have loaded two adults into the stand and it’s managed fine. The stand is made from powder-coated steel, which gives it a lot of strength without being too heavy. The hammock and stand weighing in around 27lbs when packed away in the included carry case.

Most of the recommendations so far (except for the top pick) have been aimed at gathered-end style hammocks such as Brazilian hammocks or camping hammocks. However, if you think spreader bar hammocks are better , this next recommendation is for you.

The Zupapa stand can accommodate both spreader bar hammocks and non-spreader bar hammocks between 8.5-11ft long. It comes with chains included for attaching smaller hammocks. Similar to most stands here, it’s made from steel tubing which gives it lots of strength, it can hold up to 450lbs of weight which exceeds the capacity of the other hammocks.

However, at 142” long, it’s by far the biggest stand here when erected although at 27lbs it’s still lighter than the ENO SoloPod. Despite its large size, the Zupapa stand is highly portable due to minimal setup time and the inclusion of a carry case.

If you want a portable hammock stand for your backyard that will look stylish, the ENO SoloPod is a great pick. Unlike the other portable stands here which have prioritized functionality, ENO have made an elegant-looking stand with curved edges.

Like the other stands here, it’s made from powder-coated steel tubing, however, the steel used is much thicker so overall the stand is much heavier at 63lbs. This means it’s less portable than the others although it breaks down easily into 8 smaller pieces which you can easily throw it in the trunk. I would recommend at least two people to carry this stand and put it together due to the extra weight.

The stand has been designed specifically to fit ENO SingleNest and DoubleNest hammocks which are 9’4ft long, however, you could use it with any camping hammock that’s a similar length.  It’s suitable for a weight capacity up to 400lbs which is the same as their hammocks. Whilst I recommend this as the best stand for the backyard, the nonslip feet mean it can be used anywhere from the beach to the poolside.

If you’re looking for a portable hammock stand for the beach, I can highly recommend the Mock One from Republic of Durable Goods. Originally created as a Kickstarter campaign , it has fast become a popular brand. This is because it has been designed for complete ease of setup making it ideal for taking on day trips to the beach where you want a quick no-hassle setup.

It has a built-in hammock made from 210T parachute nylon (similar to most budget camping hammocks) which is far more durable than cotton and much easier to clean, this will be appreciated when you need to wash all the sand out of it! You can only use the included hammock so I wouldn’t recommend it if you already have a favorite hammock. It’s suitable for users up to 6’4″ which should cover most people.

This stand is very portable as it weighs just 14.5lbs, however, it does also have the lowest weight capacity of all those reviewed here at 250lbs so you’ll need to be mindful not to load too much weight into it. One final feature worth mentioning is the built-in sun shade which is a nice addition for those bright days by the sea.

Eagles Nest Outfitters (ENO) are one of the leading makers of hammocks and hammock stands. Their Nomad stand is easily the best stand for serious hikers, travellers and outdoor enthusiasts who need a stand that doesn’t rely on using trees.

It’s extremely portable and folds up in to the included 32×10” carry case, which is about the size of a medium duffel bag. At 15lbs, it’s the lightest stand currently available, however it’s still not quite light enough to replace a tent altogether during backpacking trips.

The cross bar is suitable for use as a ridge line if you want to use a tarp to protect yourself from the elements. ENO do also have a bespoke shelter for the Nomad stand if you’re wiling to splash out. It has convenient straps each end for hanging your belongings off the ground to avoid dirt or water.

The pyramid style legs provide the most stable base for hanging a hammock than any of the other stands which make it ideal for all ground types, although ENO recommend a maximum of 300lbs weight capacity due to the lightweight materials used. The biggest downside to this product is the price which puts it out of reach of many casual hammock dwellers.

Another portable stand that utilises the stability of your vehicle is the Hammaka hitch stand. It easily attaches to the standard 2 inch hitch receiver that’s typically found on trucks, SUVs and some sedans.

The stand is capable of both hammock mode to hold a single hammock for lying in up to 300lbs capacity, or chair mode where it can hold two hammock chairs, each with 300lb capacity.

It has a 10ft span and is made from durable powder coated steel which easily breaks down when not in use so you won’t need to drive around with it on. When broken down, it weighs just 56lbs, although only breaks in to 3 pieces so can be a bit big to keep in some vehicles.

Easy Setup: Tranquillo

If you’re looking for something that is quick and easy to set up, I’d recommend the Tranquillo. Similar to the Mock One shared earlier, this stand is incredibly fast and easy to put together; it’s possible to put the Tranquillo together in less than 35 seconds and doesn’t require any screws or tools whatsoever. If you don’t believe me, watch this video on the Amazon listing and you’ll be blown away.

However, it’s a slightly different design to the Mock One as the polyester net material is softer so it’s better for relaxing whereas the Mock One uses a tougher nylon which is more durable.

Not only is it super simple, but it has a weight capacity of 550lbs which far exceeds any of the other portable hammock stands I reviewed. The stand itself weighed in at 25lbs with the hammock included, so easily portable for camping or a day trip to the beach.

The stand does come with a 2 layered polyester hammock in a choice of colors, or you can attach your own hammock. The length of the stand when put together is 9ft which is adequate for the majority of hammocks.

The weight is also relatively low – especially for the price – but you’ll need to add a tarp and a suspension system to make it backpacking ready. The included buckle suspension system takes some getting used to, but it’s simple to set up once you get the hang of it and very durable. The Pro Hammock is great for park hangs and car camping, but it’s also light and compact enough for backpacking if you pick up a tarp and bug net to complete the kit.

If you’re wanting a truly unique camping experience, look no further than the Tentsile Connect 3.0 . The Connect is a tent that you hang like a hammock, which gives you a great vantage point for epic views and provides some really nice airflow to keep you cool on hot nights. You’ll need a large area and three well-positioned trees to string this baby up, so it can be a little more difficult to use. But once you’ve found the ideal spot, the ratchet strap system is easy to get the hang of. There are a lot of details that make the Connect super comfortable to spend time in, like a hanging tablet pouch for watching movies during rain and a divider with six pockets at the head to keep your space tidy. While the Tentsile is spendy, it’s worth the cost for the one-of-a-kind camping experience it provides.

Best Suspension Systems

Whoopie slings.

Whoopie slings are an adjustable, lightweight way to hang a hammock, and they’re what we typically use for backpacking. Designs for whoopie slings have slight differences, but in general they use a simple loop and knot system that holds tension with weight, but can be easily adjusted when not under pressure. There are many different whoopie sling options on the market, but here are a few of our favorites:

DAISY CHAIN STRAPS

Daisy chain straps are about as simple and convenient as it gets. They’re made up of two strong straps with many small loops at the end. Just wrap each strap around a tree and clip your hammock in on each side. Daisy chain straps aren’t as lightweight, compact, or adjustable as whoopie slings, but they’re a little quicker and easier to set up. This is why they’re the best type of suspension for hammocking in the backyard or for car camping, Here are a couple of our favorites:

BUCKLE SUSPENSION

Buckle suspension isn’t as common as daisy chain straps or whoopie slings, but they’re great because they’re ultralight and easy to use. Buckle suspension can be a little quicker to set up and take down than whoopie slings, but really the choice between the two will come down to your personal preference. Here are a couple of our favorite buckle suspension systems:

Best Underquilts

Most hammocks don’t easily accommodate sleeping pads to insulate you from cold air flowing under you. An underquilt is like a down blanket that attaches to the underside of your hammock to insulate you, and it’s an important part of your hammocking kit if you plan to do any backpacking with it. There are a ton of options available, and you can get custom quilts made to your specifications. These are a few of our favorites to get you started:

• Enlightened Equipment Revolt V2 – High-quality ultralight quilt that can be customized. It’s a little pricey, but the warmth-to-weight ratio and coverage is hard to beat.
• Warbonnet Wooki & Wooki XL – Made for Warbonnet hammocks, but can also fit other similarly sized hammocks. We like that the full length design helps keep the underquilt in place, and that the diagonally placed insulation saves weight.
• Western Mountaineering Slinglite – Super lightweight and packable. We like that this underquilt is ready-made and therefore doesn’t require any waiting on a long lead time if you need it right away.

Best Hammock Tarps

For backpacking, you’ll want to pick up a good tarp to shelter you from wind and rain. Make sure the tarp you get is long enough to cover your entire hammock, and it’s always a good idea to set it up at home first to ensure it works for you. These are our favorite hammock tarps:

• Sea to Summit Hammock Tarp – A little spendy, but it’s one of the lightest and most packable tarps out there. It’s also very easy to set up since it doesn’t require any knots and only uses three stakes .
• ENO ProFly – Excellent value tarp with good coverage. The ProFly is very versatile, because the shape allows it to be used without a hammock to create a symmetrical sheltered area that can accommodate a few people.
• Warbonnet Superfly – Custom all-weather tarp that provides maximum protection during wet and chilly weather.

Critical Hammock Considerations

Some hammock suspension systems will require you to know a few basic knots to achieve a safe setup. Make sure you practice any knots you’ll need for stringing up your hammock or for performing field repairs before you head out into the backcountry.

CHOOSING A HANGOUT SPOT

Finding the perfect set of trees for your hammock may take some trial and error, but you’ll quickly get the hang of recognizing great spots the more you use it. In general: always attach to live, sturdy trees that are at least six inches in diameter, and look above you for any dead branches or other hazards that may fall on your hammock. Set your hammock up at least 200 feet from trails and water sources to respect fellow hikers and wildlife. And lastly, don’t hang it higher than you’d want to fall. In areas where good hangin’ trees are sparse, you can use a hammock stand .

THE FLAT LAY

When you set up your hammock, look for the straps to be at about a 30° angle to the ground. This should leave your hammock with a nice curve in it. When you get in, position your body at an angle with your legs to one side and your shoulders to the opposite side. This will flatten the material under your back and eliminate any pressure points on your body. If you feel pressure points, you may have set your hammock up too taut.

LEAVE NO TRACE

Ropes and cords can damage trees, so you should always use a tree hugger strap with your suspension system (if it’s not already included as part of the design) to disperse the pressure put on the bark. Some parks and wilderness areas don’t allow hammocking at all, so make sure you check all local guidelines before you go.

The Best Portable Hammock Stands

Having a portable hammock stand is clutch if you want to enjoy your hammock anywhere trees are not. You may also want to invest in a portable stand so you have the option to take it along with you camping, to the park, wherever.

There are several different types, shapes, sizes, and price points. Given our extensive knowledge and history in hammocking, these are the best quality and most popular portable hammock stands. There are some stands that hold one hammock, two, or more. And, as you will see, some are more “portable” than others.

Why you need a portable hammock stand

• You can just about hang anywhere—parks, beach, desert, your own backyard…
• Even if you’re going going hiking or camping in a well forested area, the trail or your specific campsite may lack the perfect trees to hang a hammock. Portable stands are easy to pack in the trunk to ensure you can hang wherever you are.
• Or worse, where you’re headed may ban or heavily restrict hanging hammocks from trees in certain areas or anywhere at all. We’re seeing more and more state and national parks start to crack down on hammocks as they’re becoming more popular, though hammock stands are totally fair game.
• To that end, portable hammock stands are also better for the environment in that they don’t damage trees. Most often, typical tree straps won’t damage trees either—if you’re hanging properly —but this is another nice bonus to having a stand-alone stand.

Things to consider in portable hammock stands

• Weight capacity. Depending on your hammock’s weight capacity, make sure the stand is built to support the same or more weight, especially if you have a double hammock and expect two people to use it at the same time.
• Actual weight. If you truly want something that’s easily portable, make sure it’s not too heavy to carry. Typically, the larger and heavier the stand is, the less likely you’ll be to want to move it or pack it on a camping trip.
• Carrying case. If you do plan to bring it on lots of adventures, does it come with a case to easily pack up? I wouldn’t say this is a dealbreaker, but it’s certainly a nice-to-have.
• Footprint size. Because hammock stands need a fair amount of ground space to setup, the footprint is something you’ll want to make note of. Some of these hammock stands are awesome but larger, thus may limit where you can use it. If footprint is a concern, check out these folding hammocks with stands . Vivere Hammock Stand (with hammock)

I own this hammock stand (as you saw in the first photo) and can tell you it’s the best option based on the value alone. Unlike all the other hammock stands on this list, this one comes with a hammock! I’ve also bought it as a gift for several people .  It’s a great backyard, porch, patio, etc. hammock set up.

It’s durable and well made, and you won’t ever have to worry about flipping out of it. The only downside is that it weighs a bit more than some of the other portable hammock stands (27.5 lbs). It’s not too heavy or bulky (it packs down to 108 x 48 x 44 inches in its carrying case and can fit in your backseat/trunk), but there are smaller/lighter options if that’s what you’re looking for. 

I don’t always want to bring it along for a day in the park, but it’s definitely a necessary item on weekend camping trips. I leave it up in the backyard all summer. It’s a great semi-permanent stand if you’re looking for something for your house that can also double as a portable hammock stand to take with you on adventures.

The steel stand is sturdy and easy to put together and take apart. It doesn’t require tools, and the pieces fit together snugly so you feel very safe and secure.

The  Vivere double cotton hammock  is made with fabric that can stand up to the outside elements. It’s one of the most popular hammocks on Amazon in this category and for good reason. It comes in a variety of patterns.

Kammok Swiftlet Portable Hammock Stand

Kammok is another leading hammock brand with awesome hammocks for adults ( single and double hammocks ) and even smaller sized kids hammocks . 

This portable hammock stand differs from the rest by having an adjustable bar along the bottom to perfectly accommodate any size hammock from the Roo Jr to extra long hammocks .

The big thing this hammock stand has going for it is the weight. At just 15 lbs, so it’s quite easy to carry around and set up. Trust me, you’ll be much more motivated to bring this stand along to the park for a few hours of relaxation than some of the heavier models.

ENO Nomad Hammock Stand

This stand by Eagles Nest Outfitters—one of the most popular hammock companies—is compatible with most gathered-end (aka portable) hammocks. It comes with a carrying case and packs down for easy transport (when packed, the dimensions are 34 x 11 x 10 inches). It can hold up to 300 lbs and weighs 15 lbs itself. 

It’s made of lightweight aluminum alloy with easy shockcorded pole assembly, and it’s super quick to put together and break down. It’s a great option if you want something lightweight that can be assembled quickly and packs down easily without taking up too much trunk space.

ENO SoloPod Hammock Stand

ENO makes several great portable hammock stands, including this other solo version with a different design. This one is highly rated on REI with 4.6 stars and 75 reviews.

It takes up less space than the above Nomad Hammock Stand once it’s set up, but it weighs significantly more at 58 lbs. This hammock stand can hold up to 400 lbs, so it’s going to be a bit more sturdy than the previous model. 

It also have a no-tool, easy assembly, plus nonslip footing. 

ENO ENOpod 3-Person Hammock Stand

This bad boy lets you hang three hammocks at once. It’s not something you will want to move around much since it weights 101 lbs, but it’s a great option to keep in your backyard, bring along for a day in the park, or set up at a campground or festival for the weekend. It’s a bit of a commitment to get it up and running, but it’s great for groups of people so your family and friends will really thank you for bringing it along. 

As with all the other hammock stands, assembly doesn’t take long or require tools. There are quick-release parts to disassemble easily (into 12 pieces) and toss it in the trunk.

ENO Roadie Hammock Stand

This single hammock stand is designed to be used with your car. After setting up the two, free-standing ends behind each tire, simply drive your wheels forward to secure each base. The weight of the car is what provides the stability and security of hanging, and you still have room to sway since the poles are designed at an angle.

This stand weighs 56 lbs and is rated to hold up to 400 lbs. It’s the cheapest option from ENO but only works if you have a car. It’d be perfect for car camping, road tripping, or even hanging in your driveway. It’s also a good option if you don’t have a lot of space to set up the other stands.

Tips for Buying a Hammock

Look for durability and weather resistance.

When searching for a hammock, it’s important to consider general durability and how it will withstand the weather. While materials such as stitching rope or organic cotton can be comfortable, they don’t hold up to natural elements well. In warmer weather, materials like mesh can provide moisture-wicking and help ward off mosquitos.

Think about the attributes of different materials

Every material has its own benefits. You will want to consider factors such as ventilation, strength, irritability to the skin, and environmental factors. For example, polyester hammocks are great for more humid and tropical climates as they are less vulnerable to mold and mildew. Cotton hammocks are great for sleeping or long periods of rest as they mimic traditional bed sheets, but the material is one of the poorest for handling moisture. Considering your environment and the experience you want to have while resting in your hammock is key to picking the right one for yourself. If bugs are an issue, you consider getting a mosquito net that will work with your hammock.

Don’t forget about packability and measurements

While we all want to relax in comfort, size and weight are also options that need to be considered when selecting a hammock. You want to check travel restrictions in airports, as some hammocks can be cleared in carry-ons while others will need to be checked. You’ll also want to consider if your hammocks need additional accessories such as straps or poles to hang, as carrying large items may not be ideal while you’re hiking in the woods or trekking up a mountain, and a muddy terrain may not be the sturdiest for a hammock that requires poles. Most importantly, you will want to consider measurements — can it fit in your duffle back or backpack? Will it be long enough to set up between two trees? Always consider the ease of access when selecting your hammock.

A hammock can be hung in multiple ways. To set up many portable hammocks, you’ll start by locating the trees, poles, or structure that you’ll be hanging the hammock on and making sure the distance is correct, typically between 10 to 14 feet apart. It should be long enough that the hammock can be hung with a bit of slack, but not so loose that it will touch the ground when your weight is added to it. You will then wrap one of the straps around the anchor point, feed the loop of the hammock, and secure it. You will repeat this process for the other side and then clip on the hammock. However, each hammock is different and instructions should always be consulted before assembly and use.

Hammocks are not limited only to the outdoors. A few things to consider when looking for an indoor hammock are space and anchor points. Most hammocks require 10 to 14 feet of distance to be hung properly, so you may want to consider a sitting hammock as we mentioned above. Anchor points are also extremely important. You want to make sure you tie your hammock to something that can support your weight, so ensure your hammock includes a stand or you have a strong enough base in your home.

Some studies have shown that sleeping in a hammock allows the body to pursue a more natural sleep position, thus relieving some of the stress from pressure points. However, lying in a hammock isn’t for everyone. If you already have back issues, it’s best to talk to your doctor about the specific hammock you plan to use before making any decisions about its safety.
