Jungfrau Travel Pass 2024: All You Need To Know

jungfrau pass trains

If you plan on spending a few days in the Jungfrau region, then the Jungfrau travel pass is a great option. It saves you a lot of money on various trips and transportation.

So, to find out whether the Jungfrau travel pass makes sense for you, let’s dive right in…

Table of Contents

What is the Jungfrau Travel Pass?

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is a pass that covers the vast majority of transportation in the Jungfrau region. This means unlimited free trips on all trains, buses, boats and cogwheel trains, and cable cars.

It does not fully cover the last portion of the Jungfraujoch from the Eigergletscher stop at the top of the Eiger Express cable car station. Instead, the pass includes a 40-50% reduction on this part of the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe ticket.

Also, the Jungfrau pass does not cover seat reservations. Although, in most cases, you will not need a seat reservation anyway. I would only do that on busy long-distance trains within Switzerland.

The travel pass runs anywhere from 3-8 days. So, you can choose the pass length depending on how long you wish to stay and travel in the region.

Jungfrau Travel Pass Price

The price of the Jungfrau Travel Pass varies depending on how many days you wish to travel in the region. You can choose from a minimum of three days to just over a week. The longer you stay, the cheaper the travel pass gets.

Children between 6 and 15 pay 30CHF no matter how many days they use it. Children under 6 travel for free in Switzerland.

** Adult Reduced Price: If you have one of the following – Swiss Half Fare Card/Half Tax, GA, Swiss Travel Pass or Flex (Validated)

Jungfrau Travel Pass Discounts

The Jungfrau Travel Pass offers some discounts. If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card or a local General Abonnement, you can get around 25% off .

See the pricing table above for more details on the exact discounts available

You can buy the Jungfrau Travel Pass online via this website . You can also purchase the Jungfrau pass on-site at railway stations like Grindelwald, Interlaken Ost, and Lauterbrunnen.

Eiger Express above the Eiger Trail - via Jungfrau.ch

What Does the Jungfrau Travel Pass Include?

The Jungfrau travel pass includes all of the transportation in the region, excluding the Jungfraujoch from the Eiger Glacier (Eigergletscher). Instead, you get a big discount on the Jungfraujoch train (more than 60% discount)

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

All trains, buses, boats, and cable cars are otherwise included throughout Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, etc.

If you want to see specifically which sections of public transport, mountain railways, and cable cars are within the pass, take a look at the image below.

Jungfrau Travel Pass Map - via jungfrau.ch

This means that the following trips are included for free for you:

  • Trains to Grindelwald, Murren, Lauterbrunnen, Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen, Schynige Platte
  • Cable cars to First Mountain, Harder Kulm , and Eigergletscher (via the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal)
  • Boat rides on Lake Thun (Thunersee) and Lake Brienz (Brienzersee)

Jungfrau Travel Pass Use & Validation

Using your Jungfrau travel pass is quite simple. If you purchase it online, you specify the start date when you buy it. Be sure that the start date and Jungfrau pass validity correspond to your travel dates.

Then, when you are in the Jungfrau region, you show the pass to the ticket inspector.

If you purchase the pass when you are there, you must specify the date at the ticket counter.

Is the Jungfrau Travel Pass Worth It?

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is definitely worth it if you are in the region for more than one day and not just visiting Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch. It makes sense if you plan on going to any of the main attractions like First, Harder Kulm, Eiger Express, Schynigge Platte, Männlichen, and Kleine Scheidegg

Most of these cable cars or train trips are very expensive and not included in the standard Swiss Travel Pass. So, it makes sense to buy the Jungfrau Travel Pass even if you have it.

Let me give you a few examples of prices so you can see how much individual trips cost:

  • Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher (Eiger Express trip) – 64 CHF return
  • Interlaken to Jungfraujoch – 211 CHF return
  • Interlaken to Harder Kulm – 34 CHF return

Swiss Travel Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass is great for general travel around Switzerland, especially longer distances and traveling around cities. Whereas, the Jungfrau Travel Pass is ideal for anyone spending lots of time in the Jungfrau region as it also covers mountain excursions and gives you a great deal on the Jungfraujoch.

You can read my more detailed comparison here .

Jungfrau Travel Pass vs Bernese Oberland Pass

The Jungfrau Travel Pass and the Bernese Oberland Regional Pass are very similar. The main difference between the passes is in the breadth of the Bernese Oberland Pass. It covers significantly more of Canton Bern and includes more free travel on mountain railways and cable cars. The Jungfrau Travel Pass is better for people who are only traveling around in the Jungfrau, Interlaken, and Grindelwald areas.

Does Jungfrau Travel Pass include Schilthorn?

The Jungfrau Travel Pass does only covers the trip to Mürren but not to the top of the Schilthorn. From Murren, you must buy a ticket to the Schilthorn itself.

Whilst the Jungfrau Travel Pass does not cover the fare all the way to the top of Jungfraujoch, the final sector can be purchased at a specially reduced price.

In case you were wondering, the German word Jungfrau means young lady or virgin, and the word joch translates as pass (as in a mountain pass).

Final Thoughts

The Jungfrau Travel Pass offers excellent value for those who plan to take the excursion to Jungfraujoch and enjoy more sightseeing in the region.

Visitors arriving in the region by car will also benefit from purchasing the Jungfrau Travel Pass as it is only possible to reach the mountain summits by train, cable car or funicular.

The car-free villages of Wengen and Murren can also only be reached by public transport, and these journeys are included with the Jungfrau Travel Pass.

Why not make the most of your time in the Jungfrau Region and explore the mountains, villages and lakes aboard the excellent network of trains, cable cars, funiculars and boats that are covered by the Jungfrau Travel Pass?

How to plan a day trip to Interlaken in Switzerland - places to see and itinerary suggestions

What to Know Before You Visit Interlaken

The first thing you may want to know when planning to visit Interlaken is that the town itself isn’t big. You can easily see all there is to see in Interlaken town in just an hour or so.

The second thing you should know is that Interlaken – just as the name suggests – is located between two amazingly beautiful lakes.

These lakes and the proximity to many natural landmarks offer countless sightseeing options when visiting Interlaken… However, it might get really overwhelming trying to decide where to go. Especially if you only have one day in Interlaken…

There is so much to see and do in the Interlaken area that you could create many different itineraries. And I’m not even talking about visiting Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Grindelwald, or Jungfraujoch…

This article focuses solely on visiting Interlaken town and the lakes , but if you have at least one day extra, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe as well.

We spent a wonderful day in Interlaken this summer. Below, you can read about our experience when visiting Interlaken and how we planned our Interlaken 1 day itinerary.

Further below you can also find the best alternative suggestions for a one day itinerary in Interlaken. As you will see, there is a lot to choose from!

At the bottom of this post, you can find a map and practical information for planning your visit to Interlaken.

Where to go in Interlaken Switzerland and suggestions for things to do in Interlaken in one day

Lake Brienz vs. Lake Thun (Brienzersee or Thunersee)

When researching what to see and where to go in Interlaken, you’ll find the two lakes – Brienzersee and Thunersee – mentioned all the time. It’s because a boat trip on one of the two lakes is an absolute must-do in Interlaken! Since the lakes are big and have more sightseeing options than you could possibly see in a day, you’ll have to decide which of the two lakes – Lake Brienz or Lake Thun – you will want to see.

Good to know: It is also possible to tour both lakes on the same day. While I don’t think it’s a good idea to try to see it all in a very short time, I understand that some people want to make the absolute most out of their Interlaken day trip. So if you really want to see the two lakes in one day, you can. In that case, I recommend that you start as early as possible and plan just one or two stops along the route.

There are regular boat trips on both lakes and they both have something different to offer. If you decide to visit just one lake, it might be hard to choose which one to explore. Here’s some info that might help you decide.

Round trip on the Brienzersee is about 2,5 hours , whereas round trip on the Thunersee , is about 3,5 – 4 hours , depending on the boat. You can choose to hop off and hop back on the boat at every stop along the way.

Boats for Brienzersee depart at Interlaken Ost , just near the Interlaken railway station. Harder Kulm funicular is also located just nearby. Whereas boats for Thunersee depart from Interlaken West , on the other side of town.

Both lakes can be visited the whole year-round, but in winter , there are just very few boat rides. For example, in December, Brienzersee boats only run on Sundays, whereas Thunersee has just one daily departure (two on Sundays).

Oberhofen castle along Lake Thun is a great place to see when visiting Interlaken

We were told that a boat ride on Thunersee is a bit more varied than on Brienzersee and there is more to see. It’s mostly known for its castles: Schloss Oberhofen , Schloss Hünegg , Schloss Thun , Schloss Schadau , and Schloss Spiez .

You can visit (some of) the castles by hopping off and back on the Thunersee boat, but keep in mind that you’ll probably need the whole day for this and will be able to visit two or maybe three castles.

Brienzersee is a bit smaller and there are fewer attractions along the way. However, it’s really beautiful and more tranquil. It also has the amazing Giessbach Waterfall that’s well worth a visit.

Lake Thun is still on our bucket list, but for our Interlaken day trip this time, we opted to explore Lake Brienz . Since we visited Interlaken for just one day and wanted to see the town, visit Harder Kulm, and tour one of the lakes, this looked like a more relaxing option. And it was – we had an amazing day in Interlaken area. Further below, you can read about our experience.

Historic paddle steamer on Brienzersee in Interlaken

Interlaken Day Trip – Our Experience & One Day Itinerary

If you are looking for a nice way to spend a day in Interlaken, then I can really recommend a combination of visiting the town, touring one of the lakes, the villages, and enjoying the views from Harder Kulm.

I have to admit that we didn’t know how to best spend one day in Interlaken and so we asked local guides for the best recommendations. The trip we ended up doing in Interlaken was recommended to us by two different people and it turned out to be a great choice. The scenery along Lake Brienz is amazing and this itinerary has lots of variation.

Below you can find our detailed one day Interlaken itinerary that includes visiting Harder Kulm – Top of Interlaken , a boat trip on Lake Brienz (Brienzersee) , a visit to the beautiful Giessbach Waterfalls , an easy lakeshore hike to the very picturesque village Iseltwald , and Interlaken town itself. Read on to find out how to see it all in one (relaxing) day.

This is a relatively easy Interlaken day trip that starts and ends in Interlaken town center. Further below, you can find some tips for alternative Interlaken itineraries that also start and end in Interlaken. Take a look!

Brienzersee - one of the best places to see in Interlaken

Harder Kulm – Top of Interlaken

We started our day in Interlaken with a short ride on a steep funicular to Harder Kulm . This is one of the most popular Interlaken attractions. In my opinion, visiting Harder Kulm is one of the best things to do in Interlaken!

Harder Kulm is a viewpoint at 1,321 m height overlooking the towns of Interlaken and Unterseen and the two lakes of Interlaken – Thunersee and Brienzersee. The view is amazing and well worth visiting.

No matter how much time you have in Interlaken, make sure to go up to Harder Kulm!

Because it’s one of the best things to do in Interlaken and because it’s so easy to visit, Harder Kulm can get extremely busy. Especially if you come here in summer. We visited at 10 am on a weekday in August and it was already quite lively at the top…

Interlaken town, Lake Thun, and the mountains of Jungfrau Region as seen from Harder Kulm in Interlaken

On top of the mountain, there is a souvenir shop and a restaurant with a beautiful terrace. Phenomenal views included. This is a very popular place for sunset, but if you want the views without the crowds, it’s best to come early in the morning.

Practical info: Harder Kulm can be best reached by the funicular that’s located across the river, just near the railway station in the center of Interlaken. The funicular ride takes 10 minutes with departures every 30 minutes… It’s only operating from approximately mid-April till mid-December. In season, you can book your tickets for this funicular here .

You could also hike to Harder Kulm . It’s a short hike of just 4km (2,5 miles), but it’s very steep. It takes about 2.5-3 hours one way. You can choose to ride the funicular one way and hike back, but that would take you a good part of the day.

Things to see and do in Interlaken in one day - Harder Kulm is a must

Boat ride on Lake Brienz

A boat trip on Lake Brienz is a nice experience in itself – the azure blue water and the surrounding mountains are a treat for the eye. Colorful picturesque villages along the lake make the scenery complete.

Accidentally, the boat we took was a historic paddle steamer. It goes a bit slower than the modern boats, but it’s an experience in itself. It was fun to see that some passengers were even dressed in Belle Époque-style clothing…

Below you can read about the places along the lake which we chose to include in our Interlaken one day itinerary after visiting Harder Kulm. Take a look!

People in Belle-Epoque style clothing on a historic boat on Lake Brienz in Interlaken Switzerland

Giessbach Waterfalls

Following advice from the locals, we took a boat from Interlaken to Giessbach where we disembarked. This part of the journey takes approximately 1 hour.

Giessbach is just a tiny place by the lake, there isn’t even a village here, just the beautiful historic Grandhotel Giessbach with a restaurant. You can have lunch on the terrace of the hotel or have a picnic on a beautiful lawn next to the hotel, as most people do.

When you arrive in Giessbach by boat, you’re at the lake level which is much lower than the hotel or the waterfall. The easiest way to get to the top is to take a steep funicular. A ride on this historic Giessbach funicular is an attraction in itself! Kids loved it and it saved us a steep walk uphill.

Giessbach funicular at Lake Brienz - a very nice place to see in Interlaken

The main reason to visit Giessbach is the famous Giessbach waterfalls . It’s a really impressive waterfall, one of the best ones I’ve seen in Switzerland, that tumbles down in 14 stages till it reaches the lake below.

My pictures don’t do it justice because the sun made it impossible to get a really good shot of all the waterfalls at once, so you’ll just have to take my word for it. Giessbach waterfalls are really beautiful!

It is also possible to walk behind the Giessbach waterfall and that makes a visit even more special! Prepare to get a bit wet – no big deal, just a refreshing splash of water on a warm summer day.

Giessbach Waterfalls are one of the best Interlaken attractions

Unless you go hiking in the area, you don’t need more than 30-45 minutes to visit Giessbach, maybe a bit longer if you also have lunch there.

Afterwards, you have several options. You can take a boat to Brienz, take a boat back to Interlaken, or to one of the smaller towns along the lake (more suggestions below).

We opted for yet another option and walked to the nearby village Iseltwald, following the scenic hiking path along the shore of the lake. From there we would take a boat back to Interlaken. Read on!

Grandhotel Giessbach and Giessbach waterfall - one of the best places to see when visiting Interlaken

Giessbach to Iseltwald – Lakeshore Trail

There are several hiking paths connecting Giessbach with Iseltwald. The shortest, the easiest, and the most scenic one is the trail that follows the shore of the lake (so not the one higher up the hill that goes through the forest). It should take you 45-60 minutes to walk between the two places.

Now, I have to be honest with you, the lakeshore trail between Giessbach and Iseltwald is a really nice walk, but it’s not comparable to any other amazing hiking trails in the nearby mountains. So it’s something that is nice to do if you have an hour or two to spare when visiting Interlaken, but it’s definitely not a must if you are short on time.

The first part of this hike is quite boring, actually, but then about halfway, it gets really beautiful. The hiking trail follows a stunning coastline with the azure blue lake on one side and impressive rock formations on the other side. The closer you get to Iseltwald, the better the scenery… Take a look at the pictures below!

Giessbach to Iseltwald lakeshore hiking trail near Lake Brienz in Switzerland

Iseltwald itself is a very picturesque village. In summer and weather permitting, you can go swimming in the lake, rent a boat or a kayak, and spend at least half a day just enjoying the ‘beach’.

We made this day trip to Interlaken at the beginning of August, but it wasn’t really swimming weather that day. Our kids took a quick dip in the water and quickly came out. Swimming at the mountain lakes in Switzerland is really only doable with air temperatures of at least 25° C and lots of sunshine…

Because of this short swim, we missed our boat from Iseltwald to Interlaken. This meant that we had about an hour extra in the village. Luckily, Iseltwald is not the worst place to be stuck in for a few hours, that’s for sure. We found a beautiful restaurant terrace near the harbor and enjoyed some drinks and ice cream. When the next boat came, we didn’t feel like leaving…

Iseltwald on Brienzersee near Interlaken in Switzerland

From Iseltwald, it takes about 35-45 minutes to get back to Interlaken, depending on which boat you take. In summer, there are boats running every hour during the day.

We have been to the Interlaken area so many times in the past but never heard of Iseltwald or Giessbach before.

I’m really glad that this time we took some time to explore these places. They are both really nice, so typically Swiss, and have little crowds. In any case, not much compared to the busy Interlaken town itself or the nearby towns of the Jungfrau region…

Picturesque village of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz - great place to see when visiting Interlaken

There isn’t that much to do in Interlaken town itself, but it’s a very pleasant place. Beautiful buildings, grand hotels built over a century ago, busy little streets lined with shops and restaurants, flowers everywhere, and horse-pulled carriages with tourists… This is what you can expect to find in Interlaken.

We decided to take a walk in town, have a drink, and just take it easy. It was the perfect way to end our day in the Interlaken area. Afterwards, we took a train back to our hotel in Wengen.

So, this is how our Interlaken day trip looked like. Below you can find some alternative recommendations for things you could do when visiting Interlaken. Further below, you can find four different Interlaken one day itinerary suggestions. Read on!

Visiting Interlaken and things to do in the area

Alternative Sightseeing Options for Visiting Interlaken

As already mentioned, there are so many different ways to spend your day in Interlaken. Below are a few alternative suggestions for you.

Interlaken – Lake Brienz – Giessbach – Brienz

If you are not keen to go hiking or swimming in the lake, we have an alternative suggestion for your day from Interlaken.

In the morning, follow our trip itinerary up to Giessbach. After you visit the waterfall, get back down to the lake and take the next boat to Brienz. That way you can see the entire lake and also pay a visit to Brienz town .

If you take a boat all the way to Brienz, it will take you about 1,5 hours to get back to Interlaken. This would be another good option for your Interlaken day trip.

Brienz town along Lake Brienz near Interlaken in Switzerland

Lake Brienz – Giessbach – Interlaken – Thunersee

First, follow the same itinerary and visit Harder Kulm in the morning. Then take a boat on Lake Brienz and visit the waterfalls (same as above).

Then afterwards, take a boat from Giessbach back to Interlaken. Have lunch on the boat (to save time) and then take a boat trip on Thunersee in the afternoon.

If you want to see both lakes, I advise to start your day in Interlaken as early as possible and take the very first boat in the morning. Otherwise, just pick one stop on each lake and maybe don’t travel the entire length.

How to visit Interlaken in Switzerland - Harder Kulm is not to be missed

Interlaken – Thunersee

Thunersee is the second one of the two lakes of Interlaken. Just like at Brienzersee, there are also boat tours on Thunersee. In addition, there is a beach area close to the hotel Neuhaus in Unterseen as well. In summer, it’s a busy place…

Just as with Brienzersee, you could spend the whole day just exploring Lake Thun . There are some really nice castles along the shores of Thunersee: Oberhofen Castle, Hünegg Castle, Thun Castle, Schadau Castle, and Spiez Castle. If you take a boat, you can hop off and back on and visit several of these castles along the way.

Thun town is also a very nice place to visit if you have more time…

Good to know: If you decide to visit Thun, you should know that it’s also possible to return to Interlaken (or wherever you’re staying at) by train. This is a faster option than the boat.

Practical Information for Visiting Interlaken

  • Boat: Here you can find timetables for boat trips on Brienzersee as well as Thunresee . On this website, you’ll also find more information about ticket prices. The holders of the Swiss Pass can travel on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz for free (in the same class as your pass).
  • Tickets: If you have a Jungfrau Travel Pass of 5 days or more, boat tickets for both lakes, as well as Harder Kulm funicular fees are included. Since we were staying in the region longer, we bought this pass; it’s an amazing value and saves you so much money if doing lots of sightseeing.
  • Discounts: There are discounts available for the holders of the Swiss Travel Pass and several others. Kids under 6 years old travel for free. For kids between 6 and 16, I really recommend getting Junior Travelcard .
  • Harder Kulm: Funicular only runs from mid-April till the end of November. If you don’t have a Travel Pass and you need tickets, you can normally get them on the spot. If you want to get tickets in advance, you can also book them here . Booking in advance might save you a long wait if there’s a queue at the ticket desk.
  • When to visit: Interlaken is a year-round destination and you can see most places in any season. However, there is much more to see and do if you come between April and November.
  • Boats in the low season: There are many more boats in summer than in winter, so make sure to check the schedules when planning your visit. The high season is from the end of June till the beginning of September, shoulder season is June and September to mid-October. In the low season, there are daily boats on Thunersee, but not on Brienzersee.

Interlaken town is quite small and the biggest attraction that you have to see here is Harder Kulm which can be reached via the funicular. So you can easily visit Interlaken town center and Harder Kulm in 2-3 hours. So, one day is enough to see in Interlaken and also take a boat trip on one of the lakes.

There is so much to see and do near Interlaken that you can easily spend a week or even two weeks here and never get bored. However, as a minimum, try to plan 3 days in the area: 1 day for Interlaken town and one of the lakes, 1 day for a trip to Jungfraujoch in combination with Wengen and Lauterbrunnen, and 1 day for visiting Grindelwald and the Grindelwald-First area.

The best time to visit Interlaken is during the summer, from mid-May to September. That’s when everything is open and accessible in the mountains and the temperatures are pleasant for all the outdoor activities that this area has to offer.

Interlaken is a charming town, but what makes it special and worth visiting is its spectacular location and the stunning mountain scenery of the surrounding Bernese Oberland region. So while the town itself is worth an hour or two of your time, the real reason to visit Interlaken are the lakes and the mountains around it.

Interlaken town can easily be explored on foot or by bike. The two lakes of Interlaken are best explored by boat. The nearby mountain resorts of the Jungfrau Region can easily be accessed by train or by car, and once you are in the mountains, you can also go hiking!

Interlaken is centrally located for visiting many places in central Switzerland. It’s easy to get to by car and it also has excellent railway connections. So yes, depending on what you are planning to see in the area, Interlaken can be a good place to stay for exploring the Berner Oberland region.

Hello. Thank you for sharing such wonderful information in your blog. In the Interlaken itinerary you shared, you said you visited Harder Kulm at 10:00 AM. Was that the time you took the funicular? How long did you spend at Harder Kulm? What time did you take the funicular back down to make the 11:07 boat on Brienzersee? Thank you.

Wednesday 27th of March 2024

Hi Brenda, we went up around 10 AM and were back down in town and already on the boat around 11 AM. I can't remember the exact schedule; this is based on the timestamp in my photos. The journey by funicular is just a few minutes and the walk from the funicular station to the viewing platform is also very short. Half an hour is plenty at the top, unless you want to do some extra hiking or sit down for some coffee at the restaurant. If you want to spend more time at Harder Kulm and take it easier, simply arrive a bit earlier than we did. Also, we didn't have to wait long for funicular, but you never know how busy it is on the day when you visit, so if you can foresee some extra time, you may want to do that. Hope this helps.

We wish to make one day trip to Gstaad & Saanen. Please advice that we should plan this trip from Interlaken or Montreux ? We are senior citizens and will avoid hiking. Plan to do only one mountain trip i.e. Jungfrau from Interlaken. Also please suggest best day trips from Montreux. Thanks and Regards Sunil

Sunday 24th of March 2024

@Jurga, Thanks for your quick reply We will buy 15 days Swiss Travel Pass ( First Class ) and as advised by you we will visit Gstaad from Montreux. Since we have plenty of time in Interlaken and Montreux, please suggest more day trips Thanks

Hi Sunil, you didn't say how you travel - by car or public transport. Gstaad/Saanen can be visited from both places and by car there's not much difference. By train is a bit easier from Montreux. As for excursions from Montreux, you can visit Geneva, take a boat ride on the lake, and visit Lausanne, Vevey, etc. You can also drive to Chamonix in France or visit Glacier 3000. You can also find some nice guided tours from Montreux. Enjoy your trip!

Saturday 24th of February 2024

Hello Jurga Big fan of your blogs !! Need your guidance to plan one day in Lauterbrunnen with the train routes and bus routes/ numbers/stoos We will be coming from Lucerne or Interlaken.

Tuesday 27th of February 2024

Hi Snehal, there are dozens of ways to plan a day in the area around Lauterbrunnen, so you'll have to do it yourself based on your interests. Decide what you absolutely want to visit and then see how to fit it all in. My advice would be to not visit two different mountain peaks in one day or you'll spend more time in transit than actually exploring AND it will cost you a fortune. So concentrate on one area - either Mürren/Schilthorn, or Wengen/Kleine Scheidegg/Jungfraujoch, or Grindelwald-First, or Schynige Platte. If you visit either Mürren or Jungfraujoch, you can also spend some time in Lauterbrunnen Valley and visit the waterfalls there (don't miss Trümmelbach Falls). We also have detailed guides for most of the top places in this area on our blog. So once you decide which place you want to visit, you can find more information on our blog (all except Mürren). See the overview in our Switzerland travel page. Hope this helps.

We only have 4 nights and three days in Zurich. We were thinking of doing Interlaken, Lucerne and ending in Zurich. Leaning towards renting a car. Does this seem doable? Would you suggest staying in Lucern and daytripping to Interlaken and then ending last two nights in Zurich? I really enjoyed stumbling on your blog, so much great information. Thank you, Liz

Saturday 10th of February 2024

Hi Liz, if you are mostly interested in cities and popular mountain destinations, then you don't really need a car - a train will likely be much easier. But if you want to visit many smaller places and villages, a car might be nice to have, but it's definitely not a must. As for how to plan the itinerary, there are so many ways. If you just want to stay in one central location, then Lucerne is likely the best option. You can just take a train to/from Zurich airport to Lucerne (via the city but you can skip it altogether). With just 4 nights in Switzerland, there are many better places to visit than Zurich ;). You may want to take a look at our guide to the best day trips from Lucerne. Even if you decide not to base yourself there and stay in Interlaken for a few nights, it will give you plenty of ideas of the best places to visit in that area. Hope this helps. Have a great trip!

Saturday 4th of November 2023

Scary. Holiday means for us to relax and don‘t have a look at the clock.

Everyone travels differently, Stephi... For many international visitors, a day is all they have in one or the other area. Most people only have a few weeks holidays per year and if they take an expensive trip to the other side of the world, they want to see as much as they possibly can in the time that they have... Our 1-day itineraries are written for those people and not for the locals who have weeks to spend in one place. Think of it this way - if you spend thousands of dollars to travel to the USA or Australia and you only have a week or two, you'll also visit some of the best national parks or cities in just a day or two and try to pack in as much as you can, while most locals will book a longer holiday in just one place and explore it to the fullest. PS There is no need to comment on every 1-day itinerary on our website saying that you could stay a week there and go back every year :). I know you can, even a few weeks. We usually do that too when we have the time and we have been to all these areas multiple times too. Once again, these articles are written for those people who don't have the luxury of time and want to see the best that each place has to offer in a day. Happy travels!

Ultimate Travel Guide to Interlaken Switzerland

The beautiful town of Interlaken sits within the wider Interlaken region in the achingly beautiful Swiss Alps. As its name would suggest, Interlaken is literally a town between two lakes: Lake Thun to the west and Lake Brienz to the east.

It’s a popular skiing hub full of postcard-perfect ski resorts where you can ski and snowboard as well as hike, snowshoe, paraglide and many other fantastic winter sports activities.

The Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO world heritage site is right in the middle of the Interlaken region thanks to the three main peaks which are Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The Aletsch Glacier, which is the largest glacier in the Alps, is also part of the heritage site and home to the magical Ice Palace carved within the glacier itself.

There is so much to see and enjoy in Interlaken even if you’re not a fan of winter sports such as cycling, caving, taking advantage of the many funiculars around the Interlaken region to see some incredible vistas, eating indulgent Swiss food and just walking around the cute mountain villages.

Interlaken is one of the best places for a snowy break and all the top travel tips are in this Interlaken Switzerland travel guide.

This ultimate travel guide to Interlaken will show you all the most beautiful places in Interlaken, what to expect when visiting, where to stay in Interlaken and things to do in Interlaken which will help you in planning a trip to Interlaken.

How to get to Interlaken

Interlaken is in the centre of Switzerland close to a few major airports which make travelling to Interlaken by plane and train very simple. The rail network in Switzerland is famously efficient, modern and extensive.

Bern, Switzerland’s capital city, has the closest airport to Interlaken (roughly 50 minutes by train) but only flies to a handful of European destinations. Zurich Airport is much bigger and flies all over the world from Korea to Philadelphia and is better connected by train. It takes approximately two hours to travel from Zurich to Interlaken via rail .

Interlaken has two train stations: Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost (East). West is slightly closer in town so if you have the option of alighting the train at either station, West is probably more convenient. If you can, book your train tickets ahead of time to pay less and get a better deal.

What to expect in Interlaken

If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, you’re probably already aware that Switzerland regularly tops lists of expensive countries to visit.

That definitely doesn’t mean you can’t visit on a budget, it’s just something to be mindful of and you may prefer to book activities in advance and cook some of your meals to keep under budget. Note that a service fee is nearly always included in restaurant bills.

French, Italian and German are all official languages in Switzerland, but the most commonly spoken in Interlaken is a Swiss dialect of German.

The Swiss Franc is the currency and if you didn’t get any local currency before arriving in Switzerland, get some at the airport as Interlaken isn’t a very big town. Switzerland isn’t a part of the EU, but it is a part of the Schengen agreement and has some of the privileges of being in the EU.

How to get around Interlaken

The rail network within the Swiss Alps, like the rest of Switzerland, is also exceptional and simple to use. The town of Interlaken itself is very compact and is easy to explore on foot but you’ll need to use the trains and funiculars to venture into the wider Interlaken region.

There are shuttle buses available within Interlaken and to the popular ski resorts in Grindelwald.

If you’re staying in Interlaken for around 5 days, it’s definitely worth purchasing the Jungfrau travel pass before you arrive in Switzerland.

The travel pass is around 176 CHF and includes trains, cable cars, buses, boats and funiculars which means the funicular from Interlaken to Harder Kulm and the journey to Jungfraujoch station is included.

It’s worth noting that summer and winter passes are different and, depending on how much you want to explore, passes are nearly always more cost-effective than individual tickets.

Brienz, Switzerland - Local buses at old town in Brienz, Switzerland. Brienz is a beautiful town on the lakeside, attracting many tourists.

The best time to visit Interlaken

The Swiss Alps are known for snowy mountain ranges and winter sports, but most tourists prefer to visit during the summer in Interlaken from June to August.

The weather in the region can hit 20 degrees Celsius and it’s perfect for summer adventures like hiking and cycling. All the cable cars and trails are open in the summer and are much less likely to be affected by the weather. Of course, high accommodation prices reflect how popular this season is with tourists.

But if you love skiing and snowboarding, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy during the winter months.

The temperature is constantly below freezing so you’ll need to pack lots of layers, but you can always warm up around the fire in a picturesque log cabin in the evenings. Plus, is there a more magical place to spend the festive season than a winter wonderland like Interlaken?

Things to do in Interlaken

Harder kulm.

One of the easiest scenic viewpoints to visit is to take the funicular up Harder Kulm for the most phenomenal scenery over Interlaken and the two lakes either side, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

There are plenty of trails so you can enjoy a walk and see the vista from different viewpoints.

Watch out for low clouds as you won’t be able to see a thing when it’s misty! Also, the funicular doesn’t usually operate in the winter months December-April so that’s something to keep in mind when planning your trip to Interlaken.

St. Beatus Caves

Next to the banks of Lake Thun is the St. Beatus Caves. These are a system of caves in the heart of a Swiss mountain and they take around an hour to walk around.

They’re fully lit and are spacious enough for most people to walk through without having to duck too often.

It’s a fantastic activity to do in Interlaken if you have children and there’s a museum, too. Don’t forget to wrap up warm and wear good shoes!

In between all the hiking, cycling and skiing, you might find it enjoyable to wander through some of the small mountain towns in the Interlaken region.

Gimmelwald is the cutest village that is completely traffic-free with adorable wooden ski chalets in the Lauterbrunnen valley.

You will probably pass through Gimmelwald to take the cable car up the Jungfrau region at some point during your trip, but you should take the time to explore Gimmelwald first.

Don’t forget to explore the town of Interlaken itself! The river connecting the two lakes either side of the town is called the Aare river and it runs through the centre of Interlaken.

Walk from Weissenau panoramic viewpoint next to Lake Thun all the way along to Lake Brienz and you can stop for a liqueur coffee in one of Interlaken’s cafes along the way if you need a pick me up.

Panoramaweg Hike

There are so many hikes for all different abilities in Interlaken. The Panoramaweg hike is a popular two-hour hike that many visitors in Interlaken like to walk.

If you’re not an experienced hiker, head to the local Tourism Office for tips and to double-check that the hike is open. It’s also a good idea to check there anyway just in case there are any weather warnings.

Grindelwald

Not to be confused with Gimmelwald, Grindelwald is a town in the Interlaken region that is your gateway to all the best sports and activities in the Swiss mountains.

In winter, you can ski down the Kleine Scheidegg mountain pass from Grindelwald and in summer you can trek along many of the hiking trails.

Höhenmatte park

If you arrive in Interlaken too late to venture out into the mountains or you have an hour to kill before checking out, wander down to Höhenmatte park, especially if you love photography.

It’s a peaceful place for a stroll in spring and offers a clear view of Jungfrau mountain.

What to eat in Interlaken

All the best rich and decadent foods seem to come from Switzerland so you should be sure to partake in as many as possible during your trip to Interlaken.

Though Interlaken is a small town with only about 5,000 residents, there are plenty of restaurants to suit everyone’s taste buds. Goldener Anker is a fantastic, well-established restaurant in Interlaken which serves traditional Swiss food including Swiss cheese served in a fondue.

For a more affordable option, Husi Bierhaus is a restaurant and brewery serving comfort food like sausages and potatoes and big plates of pasta.

You’ll need a sweet tooth if you want to try some of the local Interlaken cuisines. Meringue with cream is a traditional dessert and liqueur coffee made with schnapps is a tasty nightcap after spending all day hiking. And of course, make sure you eat your weight in Swiss chocolate during your trip to Interlaken.

Where to stay in Interlaken

Budget – If you want to stick to a budget, booking more affordable accommodation in Interlaken means you have more to spend on cool activities. Balmers Hostel looks like a classic ski chalet from the outside and is only a 5-minute walk from Interlaken West train station.

They also offer free breakfast and provide hammocks in their beer garden/BBQ area. Or, just down the street is the modern Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof which also offers free breakfast, and two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) which is unheard of in a hostel!

Mid-range – Situated right on the River Aare, Hotel Bellevue is one of the most gorgeous hotels in Interlaken and it looks like it belongs in a Wes Anderson film. A 4-star hotel housed in a stately home from the early 19th-century, the Bellevue has soft and airy furnishings as well as a balcony in most rooms.

Luxury – Lindner Grand Hotel Beau Rivage is also on the banks of the River Aare with views of the Eiger mountain and less than 4 minutes’ walk from Interlaken Ost train station. The Beau Rivage is the perfect hotel for a luxurious, relaxing break.

Tours to do in Interlaken

Like a lot of things in Switzerland, alcohol is expensive. If you want to sample the nightlife in Interlaken while making friends, learn more about the beer and the breweries in town and maybe even save money on what you’d normally spend on beer in Switzerland then this pub crawl is the best tour for you in Interlaken.

It can be difficult for solo travellers to meet people while travelling, especially if you prefer private rooms, so joining a pub crawl is a fantastic way to do so.

Tandem Paragliding over Swiss Alps

Over the last few years, paragliding has become the adrenaline-inducing activity you have to do when visiting Interlaken in the Swiss Alps.

Seeing the incredible snow-capped mountains from the many viewpoints in the area is great but it’s a real thrill and bucket list experience to see them while flying through the air.

How Many Days in Interlaken?

Step one in planning your itinerary is determining how many days to spend in Interlaken. It’s very possible to explore just the town of Interlaken in one day.

One day in Interlaken is enough to explore the town itself and see the town’s main attraction, Harder Kulm. One day might also be long enough to take a boat out on one of the lakes.

However, should you want to use Interlaken as your home base to explore more of central Switzerland, you’ll want at least 2 days in Interlaken.

For those who have a little more time to spare, 3 days is really ideal if you want to take advantage of all there is to do on a trip to Interlaken.

3 days is really ideal if you want to venture out of Interlaken and continue comfortably exploring the many sights and towns of central Switzerland – such as to Wengen, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen or Iseltwald.

Interlaken is located in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps. It’s situated between two lakes, Brienz and Thun, with the river Aare running between them and through the town. Due to its small size, Interlaken is very walkable.

Most hotels and accommodation options offer paper maps to help guide your exploration of the town. Otherwise, just set out on foot and see where the day in Interlaken takes you! While the official language is German, a local dialect of Bernese German is most commonly spoken. However, because Interlaken is frequented by tourists, many locals you encounter will know some English.

Interlaken doesn’t have its own airport, which most likely means you’ll be taking the train from a nearby city, such as Geneva , Zurich or Bern . However, once you hop on that train, you’ll be in awe of the view. From Bern , the train takes 45 minutes to a little over an hour.

Coming from Zurich , the train ride is closer to two hours. While renting a car is an option (you can check car rental options here ), the train is a convenient and comfortable mode of transportation that most visitors opt for.

Make sure to reserve a seat on your train, and maybe even a spot by the window, for excellent views of Switzerland’s iconic landscape as you travel between destinations. Click here to view train schedules.

If you plan on taking the train frequently on your trip to Switzerland, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass as it can end up being very cost-effective. You could also opt to use the bus instead of the train to save cash, however, it’s not as comfortable nor as scenic.

Arriving and departing Interlaken might be some of the most stunning–the train zig-zags up or down a mountainside, through small villages, to showcase some of the best scenery the country has to offer.

1, 2 or 3-Day Interlaken Itinerary

Whether you have one day or three days, you’ll be in awe of the sites to see. Interlaken is centrally located, which makes it a good home base for exploring much of the region.

Keep in mind that you can organise your itinerary with an array of these ideas so it fits your interests. Take a read through some of the best activities to fill your time while visiting Interlaken and the surrounding area.

Day 1 – Interlaken Town Highlights

Explore interlaken town.

Make sure you reserve at least three hours for exploring the town of Interlaken. This charming historic town is a pleasure to walk through, marvelling at the architecture that is unique to the region.

Visit Hoheweg Street for some afternoon shopping or to stop for a bit to eat. Here is a good place for an afternoon break or to wander after dinner. While you’re exploring the main street, stray off just slightly to take a stroll through the Old Town Centre.

Here is where you’ll find some of the most historic buildings that are now shops, cafes, and lodging. Pair this up with a walk along the river trail to really take in the vibrant color of the water.

Save some time to visit the Interlaken Monastery and Abbey. It was home to an Augustinian Canons convent from around 1133 to 1528. It quickly made Interlaken into a destination for pilgrimages and played a central role in the religious life of Switzerland.

Harder Kulm

Here is where you’ll want to visit for stunning views of Interlaken and the surrounding mountains. If you thought the lakes and river Aare were blue up close, just wait until you see them from above.

The best time to visit Harder Kulm is when the sky is mostly clear. This will offer the greatest views.

To reach the viewpoint, you can hike to the top or take the funicular for about ten minutes. In those ten minutes, you’ll climb 730 metres, while looking over your shoulder for exceptional views. The higher you get, the better the views become. You can pre-book tickets here.

Harder Kulm Viewpoint

Take a boat ride on the lakes

Lake Brienz and Lake Thun are the two lakes on either side of Interlaken. With their clear, turquoise waters, it’s well worth your time to reserve a boat ride out on one of the lakes. If you want to stay a little more off the beaten path, you can also opt to reserve a night or two at a lodge along the lakeshore.

On Lake Brienz, check out Giessbach, an old hotel that looks like a castle, and a 500-metre waterfall. Lake Thun, on the other hand, has several swimming options for those visiting in the summer.

From the water, you’ll get an unobstructed view of Jungfrau and Eiger, so make sure to take your time if you hop a steamboat on Lake Thun. You can also visit Thun Castle. You can buy a lake pass here or, alternatively, it is also possible to organise a kayak tour here on Lake Brienz.

Day 2 – Adventure Sports & Jungfraujoch

Go bungee jumping or skydiving.

As you might imagine, Interlaken is a great destination if you’re looking for some outdoor adventuring. Should you find yourself itching to see Interlaken from high above, explore bungee jumping or skydiving.

There are several local outfits for both activities and with each, you’ll be rewarded for your bravery with outstanding views. When bungee jumping, you’ll leap from a cable car toward a mountain lake 134 metres below.

Skydiving offers views of the mountains surrounding Interlaken that only a select few get to experience.

And if skydiving or bungee jumping is a bit too out of your comfort zone, there is no shortage of activities for visitors seeking a little rush of adrenaline in their Interlaken itinerary. Some popular options include this paragliding experience and this canyoning tour.

Visit Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch, or the “Top of Europe”, is a railway station built high in the mountains above Interlaken. It sits at 3,463 metres above sea level and overlooks the Jungfrau-Aletsch mountains.

At the top, there are several panoramic restaurants, shops, exhibitions, and even a post office. There are countless places to get some of the best views of the Swiss Alps available to visitors. There are hiking trails along a crevassed glacier that lead to Monchsjoch Hut.

The Sphinx Observatory can also be reached from Jungfraujoch by taking a short elevator ride. It’s the second-highest observatory in Switzerland and is home to one of the Global Atmosphere Watch’s research stations.

Coming from Interlaken, you’ll first take a train to Grindelwald before hopping the Eiger Express gondola to the Top of Europe. You can go independently or take this full-day tour from Interlaken.

Train from Jungfraujoch

Day 3 – Day Trip from Interlaken

Grindelwald.

Due to its close proximity and variety of things to do, Grindelwald is a popular day trip from Interlaken. One of the most famous sights is the First Cliff Walk. This viewpoint is not for those who are afraid of heights.

This metal walkway protrudes from a cliff side over a 450-metre straight drop. For adventure seekers, there are opportunities for zip lining and bungee jumping. The Eiger trail is a six-kilometre hike that takes hikers toward Eiger’s north face while Bachalpsee is a stunning alpine lake.

If you want more outdoor activities, consider choosing Grindelwald. If you want to spend more time exploring a quaint village, add Lauterbrunnen to your trip.

Lauterbrunnen

If you’re taking your time, you probably won’t have time to visit both Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. The first is most likely one of the most popular day trips from Interlaken, and maybe one of the most photographed regions in Switzerland.

Staubbach Falls cascades down the mountain and into the Lutschine River and creates a picturesque backdrop to this quaint village. The waterfall is 300 metres and is one of 72 in the area that you can explore.

Lauterbrunnen is famous for its collection of towering mountains, roaring waterfalls, and rolling green hills surrounding the charming town.

Lauterbrunnen Valley

Trummelbach Falls

Trummelbach Falls is the largest subterranean waterfall in Europe and a must-see during your trip to Interlaken. The waterfall is accessible by a tunnel, stairs, and lighting built in 1913. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is perhaps one of the most stunning places to visit.

A common trip from Interlaken to Trummelbach Falls includes a stop at Staubbach Falls. Visitors walk along a thin underground path to witness the waterfall, erosion, and river that all exist underground.

The falls are fed by water melted off the glaciers on Eiger, Monck, and Jungfrau. It’s estimated 20,000 litres of water per second are pushed down the waterfall and out to the valley. The highest drop is about 290 metres, with the total drop at 400 metres.

The trail takes visitors through 10 sections of the falls. You can also opt to take an elevator to the base of the upper falls, but it’s well worth your time to walk if possible. The best time of year to visit is during the summer when the snow melt is at its highest, sending large amounts of water gushing over the falls. Try also to visit early in the day before tour groups arrive.

While you may not have time to visit each of these places during your 3 days in Interlaken, it’s well worth your time to create an itinerary that includes at least one.

To start, Murren is another small yet impressive town that’s located at 1160 metres above sea level. It’s popular for skiing and walking tours as it’s one of the few places in Switzerland that doesn’t allow cars.

The train from Interlaken only takes about an hour. Keep in mind that this town has a population of only around 500, but it’s always full of tourists, making it one of the most trafficked day trips from Interlaken.

Murren

Next, consider paying a visit to Schilthorn. It sits at 2970 metres above sea level in the Bernese Alps and offers amazing views of the surrounding landscapes. There is a popular restaurant, Piz Gloria, at the top that offers a menu of regional cuisine. Try to plan your visit to Schilthorn on a clear day for the best views possible.

ok thanks, we may probably cut Lucerne and also we have one full day at interlaken on our 1st day, 2nd day is when we go to Jungfrau.

Can you change my name in the previous comments to just “SK” please.

Thank you so much for a detailed and awesome review. We are planning to arrive to Interlaken at night from a train from Paris thru Basel. Spend the 1st day at interlaken, 2nd day to Jungfrau and any other place before going to Lucerne either on the 2nd night or 3rd morning. We have 4 days total for our trip and was thinking doing Lucerne on the 3rd and Zurich on 4th. Our flight to Zurich is on the 5th. Do you think this itineary will work?

That itinerary sounds doable, but it could be a bit rushed. You may find it a bit more relaxing if you cut out a destination 🙂

GoldenPass Express

Compagnie du Chemin de Fer Montreux Oberland bernois SA Rue de la Gare 22 1820 Montreux Phone  +41 (0)21 989 81 90 mob.ch

The GoldenPass Express redefines the travel experience between Interlaken and Montreux.

Seamless travel experience

The new travel class “Prestige” is the centrepiece of the new train. It offers everything you would expect from an unforgettable train journey: plenty of privacy, maximum comfort in a small compartment, and an exceptional culinary offering.

Make yourself comfortable on the luxurious and heated leather seats, which can be rotated 180 degrees upon request. The new travel class is also elevated by 40 cm compared to the other travel classes, offering you an even better view of the fascinating scenery.

Culinary delights on the GoldenPass Express

Local and international delicacies can be ordered in advance, ensuring a perfect start to an exciting journey. For example, how about a glass of champagne and a portion of the finest caviar from Frutigen in Switzerland?

If you prefer to pamper your palate with regional delicacies, you won’t be disappointed with a traditional apéro-plate or a vegetarian alternative. While champagne and caviar are served exclusively in “Prestige” and 1st class, you can enjoy selected dishes from the small but exquisite menu in all travel classes.

World-famous places, three regions

The journey on the GoldenPass Express is like a foray through Switzerland. The trip starts in picturesque Interlaken and continues via Gstaad, Château-d’Oex and Montbovon to Montreux, the journey’s final stop. Of course, you can also start your trip in Montreux.

Interlaken is a great base for numerous activities and boasts incredible views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Luxurious Gstaad is known for its charming chalets and is a favourite holiday spot among stars and winter sports enthusiasts alike. Château-d’Oex is known for its hot air balloons and, with a little luck, you might spot one aloft. Montreux, of course, is home to the annual Montreux Jazz Festival .

GoldenPass Express timetable

Initially, the GoldenPass Express will run once daily.

The current timetable as well as additional information can be found here .

Reservations and surcharges

Due to limited seating capacity, reservations are mandatory in “Prestige” (CHF 49) and strongly recommended for 1st and 2nd class travel. This is in addition to a valid ticket for the selected travel class.

The only thing you might find disappointing? The entire trip lasts just 3 hours 15 minutes. With those stunning views and unrivalled comfort, the journey is just as spectacular as the destination.

Swiss Travel Pass

This route is fully included in the Swiss Travel Pass (Flex) / GA Travelcard, though seat reservations must be paid for separately. Book your Swiss Travel System tickets

INTERLAKEN ITINERARY TRAVEL TIPS

Before we talk about all the best places to visit in Interlaken, here are a few tips for your itinerary.

HOW TO GET AROUND

Getting around Interlaken is a breeze, whether you choose to hit the road or opt for the convenience of public transportation. I love both main options and cannot really decide which one is the better one.

Switzerland road trip tips by Arzo Travels, Lake Thun

Let´s talk about the amazing road trip options in Interlaken and the region.

Pros of renting a car for your Interlaken itinerary:

  • Impromptu pit stops at stunning viewpoints or charming villages.
  • Flexibility to set your own schedule and go wherever your heart desires.
  • If you travel in a group of 3-4 people, road-tripping might be even more affordable.

Cons of renting a car for your Interlaken itinerary:

  • Driving the narrow streets and roads , especially in the mountains, might be challenging for inexperienced drivers.
  • Finding parking spaces in popular areas can be a challenge. Also, the parking fees can add up and be costly.
  • Keep an eye out for those sneaky Swiss speed cameras . Stick to the limits to avoid any unwelcome surprises.

➡️ CHECK OUT RENTAL CARS IN INTERLAKEN HERE

Check out my tips for driving in Switzerland here.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

The region of Interlaken has a fantastic public transportation network – like almost all of Switzerland.

Pros of using public transportation in Interlaken:

  • Sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving.
  • Enjoy the stunning scenery without any distractions, as you leave the navigation to the skilled train or bus drivers.
  • Public transportation in Switzerland is efficient, punctual, and clean.
  • The prices for tickets, including a Swiss Travel Pass , might sound high, but it is worth it if you use trains, boats, and buses – also you will get a 50% discount on almost all cable cars/lifts/and gondolas.
  • Interlaken has two train (and boat) stations : Interlaken Ost station and Interlaken West station – which makes it very accessible! In addition, there are many bus stops dotted all around the small town.

Cons of using public transportation in Interlaken

  • Prepare for occasional rush hour crowds , especially during peak travel times.
  • Check schedules and plan ahead , as certain routes may have limited service during off-peak hours or holidays.
  • Using public transportation can be pricier if you are traveling in a group.

➡️ CHECK OUT PRICES FOR A SWISS TRAVEL PASS HERE

SWISS TRAVEL PASS

If we talk about public transportation in Interlaken, we must talk about this golden ticket.

The Swiss Travel Pass is an extraordinary travel companion that opens the door to Switzerland’s unparalleled transportation system. With this pass in hand, you have unlimited access to an extensive network of trains, buses, boats, and even some mountain railways, making it the ultimate ticket to explore this stunning country.

It offers convenience, allowing you to hop on and off various modes of transportation without the hassle of purchasing individual tickets.

Whether you want to venture to Interlaken’s breathtaking peaks, cruise on Lake Brienz / Lake Thun , or explore the charming streets of Bern , the Swiss Travel Pass has you covered.

In addition, the pass includes free entry to many Swiss museums and discounts (most of the time up to 50%) on various mountain excursions, making it not only a transportation pass but also a key to cultural experiences and thrilling adventures.

INTERLAKEN ACCOMMODATIONS

Interlaken is home to some amazing hotels – amazing and expensive. I have a detailed accommodation guide for Interlaken but find some tips below.

View from Hotel Nord in Interlaken

Luxury: Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa  – The most luxurious hotel in Interlaken is Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. I have not stayed there myself, so I can only repeat what I heard: This hotel is amazing. If you are looking for a fancy place in Interlaken, this is probably the best pick.

➡️ Book your stay at Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa here.

Mid-Range: Hotel du Nord  – For your stay in Interlaken, I recommend this hotel – Hotel du Nord – which is centrally located and is quite nice. It is one of my favorite accommodations for your 5-day Swiss itinerary.

➡️ Book your stay at Hotel du Nord here .

Budget: Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof  –  If you are on a budget, I recommend staying in Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof next to Höhenmatte Park. It is not the cheapest hostel but definitely worth the money and one of my all-time favorite hostels.

➡️ Book your stay at Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof here .

BEST TIME TO VISIT INTERLAKEN

Of course, there is not one answer because it really depends on your preferences, and I do have a detailed blog post where I talk about the best season and time to visit Interlaken, but if you want to enjoy mountain peaks and spend time at the lakes, I highly suggest visiting in the summer months and in the early fall season because you will have access to basically every attraction.

However, there is also a downside if you visit in the high season ( higher accommodation prices and crowds e.g.).

When planning your Interlaken itinerary, keep in mind, that many activities are available year-round, but some may have seasonal availability. Some experiences are exclusive to the summer months, while others can be enjoyed in both summer and winter.

ITINERARY FOR INTERLAKEN – PLACES TO VISIT IN 1-14 DAYS

Without further ado, let the Interlaken adventure begin! Get ready to fall head over heels in love with Interlaken, the most beautiful place in the world (in my humble opinion).

INTERLAKEN 1 DAY ITINERARY

⚠️ Not possible all year round

1 DAY IN INTERLAKEN – LAKE BRIENZ AND BRIENZER ROTHORN

Get ready to be swept away by the alluring beauty of Lake Brienz as you embark on a boat cruise departing from Interlaken Ost boat station .

Best things to do around Lake Brienz, Interlaken Giessbach Waterfalls

Prepare to be spellbound by the shimmering turquoise waters , leading you toward the picturesque village of Brienz . Breathe in the fresh air, and behold the awe-inspiring panorama of the majestic mountains that cradle the lake. No matter, how often I hop on a Lake Brienz boat tour, I never tire. Lake Brienz is just one of the most stunning lakes – in the world.

Get off in Brienz, on the northern shores of Lake Brienz (while Interlaken lies on the southern shores of the lake), and get ready for an amazing mountain trip.

If you want a relaxing way to enjoy some of the best views in Switzerland, climb aboard the timeless steam locomotive that makes its charming ascent up the formidable Brienzer Rothorn mountain , standing proud at 2,350 meters (7,709 feet) above sea level .

View from Brienzer Rothorn

From your window, the sweeping views of the Bernese Oberland will unravel, a spectacle that left me in awe on both occasions I rode the steam locomotive !

If your adventurous spirit is craving a challenge, why not opt for a  hike ? Set off on the scenic trail leading to Brienzer Rothorn .

Once you’ve enjoyed the magnificent views from Brienzer Rothorn , you can choose to get back to Brienz – either by foot or locomotive.

Spend the rest of your early afternoon through the charming lanes of Brienz village , admiring the quaint Swiss chalets that decorate its streets. There are a couple of restaurants where you can have your late lunch/early dinner before continuing your trip.

Most beautiful street in Europe, Brunnengasse in Brienz

Though Brienz is extremely picturesque, it is also small and I normally just spend here an hour or two.

If your accommodation is in Interlaken, get to Interlaken by train (faster than by boat) and relax at either the Höhenmatte Park or at one of the many cafes/restaurants.

This is one of the most splendid days one could spend in Interlaken. Rest assured, I have a plethora of further suggestions to enrich your Interlaken itinerary.

INTERLAKEN 2 DAY ITINERARY

⚠️ Not possible all year round

2 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – HARDER KULM

When in Interlaken for more than one day, make sure to visit one of the main attractions in the region: Harder Kulm.

Now, how does one conquer Harder Kulm , Interlaken’s very own local mountain at 1,322 meters (4,337 feet) above sea level? Well, you’ve got two options. For those loving a very active Interlaken itinerary, take on the “challenge” of a hike.

View from Harder Kulm

On the other hand, if you’re looking for an uphill journey that requires less ‘huff and puff’, there’s the funicular . Just sit back, and enjoy those picture-postcard views of the surrounding mountains.

This view from up here is one of my favorites. However, Harder Kulm is anything but a hidden gem. It can get really busy, especially later in the day (it is a great place to watch the sunset). Head to the viewing platform and enjoy the spectacular panorama of two beautiful lakes (Lake Thun and Lake Brienz), and the town of Interlaken snuggled below.

At the top, you can have lunch at the panoramic restaurant . I had pizza there once and was pleasantly surprised.

Then it is time to descend from Harder Kulm – either via a hike or kick back on the funicular for a more relaxed trip downhill.

Spend the rest of the day, in Interlaken village – do some souvenir shopping, satisfy your sweet tooth with Swiss chocolates, and perhaps partake in some café-dwelling and discreet people-judging (do not judge me for doing this!).

Interlaken in spring March April

There you will also find the stunning Höhenmatte Park , where On sunny days, I love to sit down and relax and watch the paragliders which are plenty on clear and sunny days. Often, I get a drink or snack from one of the close by supermarkets – that is the Swiss kind of Dolce Vita in my opinion.

❗TIP FOR AN ADVENTUROUS INTERLAKEN ITINERARY: Now, if you want to take the term ‘flying high’ to a literal level, why not sign up for a paragliding experience in Interlaken? Strap into your harness, and swoop above the awe-inspiring landscape, taking in a bird’s-eye view of the heart-stopping Swiss Alps.

Check out prices for paragliding in Interlaken here.

INTERLAKEN 3 DAY ITINERARY

All year round possible.

3 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – LAUTERBRUNNEN, MUERREN, SCHILTHORN

Plunge headfirst into Day 3, featuring the heart-stopping wonders of Lauterbrunnen and Mürren (and maybe even Schilthorn Mountain) !

Pack your sense of awe for cascading waterfalls , and your vocabulary of superlatives for postcard-perfect villages.

Start this day with a short train ride to Lauterbrunnen, the ‘The Valley of a Ridiculously Large Number of Waterfalls.” Pause to gawk at the impressive Staubbach Falls , which takes the ‘fall’ in ‘waterfall’ very seriously, cascading from a lofty cliff.

Let the spritzing mist tickle your face – in the summer months you can walk behind the waterfall for this amazing experience.

Lauterbrunnen Staubbach waterfall a top activity in Interlaken with Arzo Travels

Lauterbrunnen is one of my go-to destinations and I normally visit twice a year. It is just a ridiculously beautiful valley which I will never get enough from. After exploring Lauterbrunnen and the waterfalls for an hour or two,  hitch a gondola/train ride to Mürren , a car-free alpine utopia clinging to the cliff’s edge like a mountain goat.

For those more interested in physical activities, the easy uphill hike from Grütschalp (between Lauterbrunnen and Muerren) and Mürren, is as stunning as the train ride.

So it is up to you to decide which option is better for you.

Hiking from Grütschalp to Murren

For thrill-seekers, Mürren doesn’t disappoint – tackle a via Ferrata for a vertical adventure with a safety tether. While I have never done any via Ferrata, I heard so much great feedback, so if you are a climber – this is your place to enjoy the rest of the day.

All others, the village is quite cute and you can stroll it for an hour or so and just enjoy some fantastic views.

EXTRA: Make your way to Schilthorn Mountain – not only is it panoramic-view famous, but it’s also had a brush with James Bond fame (if you know, you know). Enjoy the ride in the cable car from Muerren as you inch upwards, eyes drinking in the unfolding vistas.

Swiss Panorama in Schilthorn

At the summit, indulge in a 360-degree visual feast of the nearby peaks, including the famous trio: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.

Head to Piz Gloria , the revolving restaurant that lets you dine like 007-Bond while enjoying the spectacular landscape.

This day is one of my favorite day trips from Interlaken – though the trip to Schilthorn Mountain is not cheap (discount with a Swiss Travel Pass) it is worth it in my opinion. At least on a clear day (I have been up Schilthorn Mountain twice and once it was foggy, so that was not as amazing). The trip to Lauterbrunnen and Muerren is free with a Swiss Travel Pass.

INTERLAKEN 4 DAY ITINERARY

Possible all-year-round

4 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – JUNGFRAUJOCH

Welcome to Day 4 of your Interlaken itinerary- discover the fabled Jungfraujoch , or as it’s commonly known, the “Top of Europe .”

Kickstart your day with a scenic train ride from Interlaken, serving you postcard-worthy snapshots of the Swiss countryside. Choo-choo through snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, and alpine hamlets as you chug towards Kleine Scheidegg , perched comfortably at a cool 2,061 meters (6,761 feet) above sea level.

Jungfraujoch station view of Aletsch Glacier in April

The Kleine Scheidegg makes a wonderful stop – especially in the summer, I suggest getting out and doing some easy hikes around the area – there is an extremely beautiful lake near the Kleine Scheidegg train station.

From Kleine Scheidegg, board the Jungfrau Railway , bound for the highest railway station in Europe . Carving a path through the Eiger and Mönch mountains, the anticipation ramps up as you inch closer to the legendary Jungfraujoch .

The Jungfraujoch station stands at 3,454 meters (11,332 feet!) above sea level – thus, offering some incredible panoramas.

Wander through the otherworldly Ice Palace , and soak up the jaw-dropping vistas from the Sphinx Observation Terrace . Amidst this snowy wonderland, indulge in a meal at one of the restaurants.

Ice sculpure at Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch

I have been asked many times if the Jungfraujoch is worth it. And it is, but… This train ride is quite pricy, even with the discount with a Swiss Travel Pass, it is a rather expensive activity in the Interlaken/Jungfrau region, but a highlight for many. So, there are wonderful alternatives that do not cost about 200 CHF and equal also great views.

Check out prices for a trip to Jungfraujoch here.

TIP: If you enjoy being more active, you can hike down/up to Kleine Scheidegg. However, from there, it is impossible to get up/down Jungfraujoch without the train.

INTERLAKEN 5 DAY ITINERARY

Possible all year round (with a few exceptions for the Lake Thun boat cruise)

5 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – THUN AND LAKE THUN

Welcome to your Interlaken 5 itinerary.

Today is about  Lake Thun before stepping ashore to explore the postcard-perfect town of Thun . Prepare to be charmed by scenic landscapes, historic landmarks, and Swiss culture served in a delightful package.

Best things to see at Lake Thun, boat tour Lake Thun

Set sail on a picturesque boat cruise across Lake Thun – from Interlaken West boat station – a tranquil oasis encircled by majestic peaks.

The cruise ends in Thun, where the shores greet you with the mighty Thun Castle , standing tall against the skyline.

Thun, most beautiful town in Interlaken

Thun is just a beauty! Get lost in Thun’s delightful Old Town , where cobblestone lanes are adorned with quaint shops and cafés. Take in medieval architecture and be mesmerized by the Rathaus, the town’s splendid Town Hall, a beacon of Thun’s rich heritage.

Next, step into a bygone era at Thun Castle, a formidable fortress from the 12th century. Wander through its museum, a treasure trove of intriguing artifacts and exhibits.

Given all this, I think spending a day on Lake Thun and in Thun is a day wonderfully spent. I always make sure to visit Thun for a day whenever I am in Switzerland.

INTERLAKEN 6 DAY ITINERARY

⚠️ Not possible all year round – limited opening hours in the winter months

6 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – LAKE THUN, SIGRISWIL, ST.BEATUS CAVES

Day 6 of your Interlaken itinerary promises sparkling lake views and subterranean wonders .

Start your day with a serene boat cruise on Lake Thun , one of the jewels of the Swiss Alps . If you have done the Lake Thun boat cruise the day before, you can also use the bus to get around.

Get off at Gunten boat station and take a scenic bus ride up to Sigriswill a small village in the mountains.

Sigriswil suspension bridge panorama viw

Hold your breath for the Sigriswil Panorama Bridge , an architectural marvel that delicately stretches across the sky, offering gorgeous vistas.

The entrance fee of about 8 CHF is payable via credit card or in cash.

If you enjoy hidden Swiss gems, add a visit to Grabesmühle to your Interlaken itinerary – a very weird, yet gorgeous place. It is close to Sigriswil Bridge and you could combine the trip if it takes your fancy (read more about Grabenmühle here).

Grabenmühle best place to visit

Though I could not really figure out how to classify Grabenmühle (though I have visited twice so far), I just love it. It is just an extra beautiful place.

Then head to St.Beautus Caves , also on the shores of Lake Thun and quite near Sigriswil. Traverse the labyrinth of these ancient limestone caves, as they reveal to you Mother Nature’s underground art gallery, replete with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

St. Beatus Höhle in Interlaken

I did visit the caves on a hot, sunny day – it was a delight to walk through the chilly caves and escape the heat. However, it also makes a great destination even if you do not want to escape hear.

For lunch/dinner with a view, enjoy a meal at the restaurant at St. Beatus Caves .

INTERLAKEN 7 DAY ITINERARY

⚠️ Not possible all year round – open in the summer and winter but closed in between for a few weeks/months

7 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – GRINDELWALD

Day 7 of your Interlaken escapade welcomes you to the mountainous marvels of Grindelwald First and the gorgeous village of Grindelwald . Gear up for a day studded with stellar mountain vistas, thrilling outdoor escapades, and quintessential alpine delights.

What tours in Switzerland

Kickstart your ascent to Grindelwald First via a picturesque gondola ride, gifting you panoramic views of the majestic peaks and verdant valleys.

At Grindelwald First , brace yourself for the natural splendor that awaits you. Embark on a 1-hour hike to Lake Bachalpsee , a mirror-like mountain lake reflecting the majestic beauty of its surroundings, an alpine postcard coming alive with each step.

Bachalpsee near Grindelwald one of the most photogenic spost in Interlaken

Revitalized by the tranquility of Bachalpsee, head back to Grindelwald First, the hub of adrenaline-inducing activities. Try the exhilarating experiences at Grindelwald First – read more here.

In summer , it morphs into a hiker’s heaven, boasting trails framed by blooming meadows, shimmering glaciers, and snowy peaks.

In winter , Grindelwald First turns into a snowy playground with skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing.

Then head back to Grindelwald village, treat your palate to the local cuisine, and immerse yourself in the alpine ambiance.

Grindelwald is another of my favorite places in the country – it can get quite busy but given its gorgeousness, it is quite understandable.

INTERLAKEN 8 DAY ITINERARY

⚠️ Not possible all year round (normally, only during the main season in the summer)

8 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – ROSENLAUI

Ready to kick off Day 8 of your Interlaken itinerary? Buckle up for a scenic trip to Grosse Scheidegg and a gorgeous hike to Rosenlaui Glacier and Rosenlaui Valley . Prepare to be dazzled by Mother Nature’s artistry, her finest brush strokes, and a “raw and rugged” Swiss Alps experience.

Grosse Scheidegg hike down to Rosenlaui Valley

First up, hop onto a bus that’s heading to Grosse Scheidegg. As you swerve up the mountain, try not to drool over the window at the mesmerizing montage of towering peaks, and valleys.

INFO: There is an additional charge for the bus ride – even with the Swiss Travel Pass, you have to pay an additional fee.

Upon reaching Grosse Scheidegg, get ready for a jaw-dropping panorama that’s more captivating than the latest blockbuster.

Next, lace up your boots for a scenic hike down to the Rosenlaui Glacier and Rosenlaui Valley. Prepare to be awe-struck by the might of the Rosenlaui Glacier – this gorge is my favorite in all of Switzerland!

Rosenlaui Glacier Gorge close to Interlaken

Your adventure continues into the heart of Rosenlaui Valley. Stroll through the valley, soaking in the peace of this pristine alpine Eden.

I just “discovered” Rosenlaui just 2-3 years ago. It really had not been high on my radar but when I visited I was like “Whoa”. It really is so extremely gorgeous up there, that I had to revisit. And I am sure to visit again, because…it is just soo pretty.

INTERLAKEN 9 DAY ITINERARY

Possible all year round.

9 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – MONTREUX

On Day 9 of your Interlaken itinerary, jump on the train to Montreux. Board the famous GoldenPass Line , a scenic train that makes the Swiss countryside look like a blockbuster movie set. Grab a seat and let the panoramas of Montreux hypnotize you.

Stroll along Lake Geneva and feast your eyes on the majestic Alps – nature’s skyscrapers, basking in their glory.

Montreux Switzerland and hotels at Lake Geneva

Stroll Montreux Promenade , Switzerland’s own red carpet, lined with palm trees and flower beds that could win beauty pageants. It’s not just a walk, it’s a catwalk! In spring, summer, and early fall, this is really one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland .

Next, don’t forget to visit one of the most famous Swiss castles – Chateau du Chillon. It is also located on the shores of the lake, and walking there from Montreux is one of the nicest in Switzerland. I just looove it.

Lake Geneva is also famous for the vineyards, so wander over to the vineyards, where the slopes wear a green carpet of vines. Have a sip or two of the world-famous local wines – it’s grape juice for adults! Read more in detail in my Montreux itinerary.

INTERLAKEN 10 DAY ITINERARY

Possible all year round

10 DAYS IN INTERLAKEN – LUCERNE

On Day 10 of your Interlaken trip, hop on a scenic train ride to Lucerne , the city that’s stolen more hearts than a romance novel hero – after all, it is often named the most beautiful city in Switzerland.

Luzern Interlaken Express window view

Climb aboard the grand Luzern-Interlaken Express , a two-hour moving panorama with breathtaking views. As the Swiss countryside rolls by, be ready to feast your eyes on landscapes. It is one of my most favorite train rides in the country, making the 2 hours on the train more like a cinema experience.

Tip: If you opt for a Switzerland road trip , you will pass the scenic Brünig Pass.

Lucerne is a history book that’s come alive. Start your city flirtation with a visit to the Chapel Bridge , a charming wooden structure that’s playing flower shop. Walk on its ancient planks, pause to appreciate the medieval graffiti, and shoot some pictures that’ll make your friends at home sigh with jealousy.

Continue your time travel to Lucerne’s Old Town. Meander through cobbled streets, and admire buildings that refuse to age.

Chapel Bridge 2016 in Lucerne - Can you spot me and Puppygak on th bridge?

The town center has some incredible buildings – even after all my visits, they never fail to amaze me.

Spend the afternoon on a boat ride in Lake Lucerne, where tranquility flows like fine Swiss chocolate and get up Mount Rigi to watch some of the nicest sunsets. I visited so many times, I cannot even count but I can assure you, I always had a blast (especially with good weather).

And with a Lucerne walking tour in between, you´ll get all the important info about the pretty city!

Relax in the cable ca r, soaking up the beautiful scenery en route. But hold onto your hat, because this is just the teaser trailer.

The majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, and lush landscapes might just knock your socks off.

Now, you’re off to the races and an uphill hike follows! Follow the marked path through postcard-worthy landscapes. I am not ashamed to admit, that the hike was quite exhausting for me…but once I reached the Trift Bridge , I had a jaw-dropping moment. Stretching high over a glacier lake, the bridge is an engineering marvel that’ll have you saying, “How did they even…?”

So, strap on your boots, embrace the challenge, and let the Trift Bridge adventure begin. Because, let’s face it, views are always better when you’ve earned them!

INTERLAKEN 12 DAY ITINERARY

12 days in interlaken – lake gelmer.

On Day 12, you’re off to the drop-dead gorgeous Gelmer Lake in Interlaken. Buckle up for a day of stunning scenery, calf-burning hikes , and “wow” moments that’ll stick with you like a catchy tune.

Gelmer Lake in Switzerland Arzo Travels

To reach this aquatic wonder, there are two options: a  ride on a vertical funicular (not for the faint-hearted), or a hike that promises ‘no pain, no gain.’ Pick your adrenaline potion, depending on how spunky you’re feeling.

Once you land at Gelmer Lake, prepare to be hit by the beauty bomb. Crystal clear turquoise waters, jaw-dropping mountains – it’s a whole lot of ‘oh my.’

It’s hiking time! Trails around the lake range from ‘piece of cake’ to ‘break a sweat’ for all fitness enthusiasts. Keep your eyes peeled for the residents – the flora and fauna. Admire the Instagram-worthy wildflowers, enjoy the avian symphony, and maybe even spot some camera-shy critters.

Pack a picnic for a lunch date with nature by the lakeshore. Get ready to be wowed (I for sure was)!

For the laid-back loungers, find a comfy spot by the lake and let the beauty hypnotize you. Take a leisurely walk around the lake on easy-breezy paths.

2 WEEKS IN INTERLAKEN – CHOCOLATE WORKSHOP + SPIEZ

It’s Day 14 in Interlaken, and today, you’re going on a delightful Swiss chocolate escapade followed by a visit to the picture-postcard town of Spiez .

Get ready to drown in a river of Swiss chocolate , as you start the day at Funky Chocolate Factory. Sniff the heavenly aroma and let your taste buds do a jig as you savor the silky, melt-in-your-mouth sweetness. And the best: You can make your own Swiss colocate in Interlaken.

nterlaken what to do, Chocolate Workshop

Once you´ve filled your pockets (and belly!) with chocolate, it’s time to roll down to the stunning town of Spiez . This pretty-as-a-picture town, nestled on the shores of Lake Thun, is a sight for sore eyes (and sore tummies).

View of Spiez panorama

Take a lazy stroll on the gorgeous promenade , admiring the glistening lake on one side and quirky shops and cafes on the other.

Then, it’s off to the surrounding vineyards for some grape-spotting and wine-tasting. Amble through the lush vines, sample the sun-kissed wines, and raise a toast to your Swiss adventures.

Your final stop is Spiez Castle , a grand medieval fortress that will transport you back in time. Explore its hidden corners, run around its courtyards, and be spellbound by the panoramic views of the lake and the Alps.

Spiez is one of my favorite villages – it is just so pretty, yet so different from the rest. Strolling along the shores of Lake Thun makes me rather feel I am in France and the French Riviera – French vibes in Switzerland.

Interlaken itinerary 3 days — What to do & how to spend 3 days in Interlaken perfectly?

Murren village

Traveling to Europe is expensive, but the cost of traveling to Switzerland is even more expensive than average vacation cost of Europe. The fact that so many people say that you should go to Switzerland once in your life or that Switzerland is so beautiful without any dead corner has made me wary and not dare to expect too much. In the dorminity room that I stayed when I came to Interlaken, there were six female friends, but 4 of them come back here for the second time. And I really lost my heart the day I came to Interlaken.

Interlaken

If I could go back to Switzerland 100 times, I would go back to Interlaken almost 100 times. I’m sure the photos taken in Switzerland are only for keeping as a souvenir, but they can’t describe the beauty in real life! So, is 3 days in Interlaken enough and what to do in 3 days in Interlaken? Let’s check out our suggested Interlaken itinerary 3 days on how to spend 3 days in Interlaken. With this Interlaken itinerary you have fully 3 days in Interlaken, 3 days in Interlaken itinerary is also good if your time is tight, an Interlaken itinerary 3 days is also very good and enough!

Interlaken region (# interlaken itinerary 3 days)

travel pass in interlaken

Interlaken is in the Bernese Oberland region in central Switzerland. The name Interlaken partly tells about its location, located between two beautiful lakes, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It is also the gateway to the famous high peaks of Jungfrau, Eiger and Monch. Interlaken has Interlaken Ost station on the east side near Lake Brienz and Interlaken West station on the west side near Lake Thun. There is also Spiez station located by the Lake Thun, this is also an important big station, I left Interlaken to Milan from Spiez station.

What is the best season for travel? (# 3 days in interlaken itinerary)

travel pass in interlaken

Weather is very important and will greatly affect how you feel about the trip. Spring and autumn are two seasons that I think everywhere will be very beautiful, but for me personally, summer will be the best season to explore the Swiss mountains because the days are longer, the weather is not too cold, the sky is clear to see the snowy peaks and you can easily participate in some outdoor activities such as hiking, paragliding…

Murren Village

If you go in the winter, besides having to prepare carefully, for example snow shoes and other outdoor activities. How to keep warm clothes but still comfortable when wearing them, in addition, you should pay attention to the matters of vehicles for traveling because many roads, railways will be closed in winter, many places to visit will not open.

How to get to Interlaken?

Travel time from Luzern to Interlaken West railway station is 2 hours. Note that if you have a Swiss Travel Pass or a Bernese Oberland Pass, this route is completely free, you just need to get on the train, any time is ok. I bought the Bernese Oberland pass for three days but it will start on the first morning when I arrive in Interlaken, so I still have to hunt for a super saver ticket for this trip.

Where to stay?

travel pass in interlaken

This hostel is a very budget hostel and is a 5-minute walk from Interlaken West. Everything at the hostel is just the most basic level. Under the hostel is a beer bar, but fortunately it is not noisy when sleeping.

In terms of accommodation, in my opinion, if you stay near Interlaken Ost station, it will be more convenient than Interlaken West. And if you have the conditions, you can refer to staying 1 night in Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, it’s even better.

My Interlaken itinerary 4 days 3 nights as follows

I went from Luzern to Interlaken the night before, went back to the hostel to rest.

  • Day 1: Because the weather was not very favorable, it was a bit foggy and rainy, so I chose to go to 3 villages Lauterbrunnen, Wengen and Mürren.
  • Day 2: I went to Lake Brienz, Brienz Rothorn Peak and Lake Blausee
  • Day 3: Jungfraujoch Peak and Grindelwald
  • Day 4: Enjoy a morning in the center of Interlaken then catch the train to Milan.

So I have 3 full days in Interlaken, but the above itinerary is also a “race” against time. There are a few spots close by that I have to skip them such as taking the train to the top of Harder Kulm to watch the sunset. Although it’s free and close, but after a long and tiring day out, I had to give it up. I really wish I had another day here. So, in my opinion 4-5 days will be the most ideal.

Travel tickets

The thing that confuses me the most when planning a Switzerland itinerary is the travel passes. Oh my god, there are so many types of travel passes that each pass will cover a different number of routes. It depends on the places you choose to visit to find the most suitable pass. For first-timers like me, it’s really a headache because if you want to save money on travel costs, you have to find out carefully. To sum up, to know which is the most economical option, you need to make a detailed itinerary of the places you want to visit, and then make a comparison table between the travel passes, then you will really know which pass is the most economical.

travel pass in interlaken

I quote Ha Nguyen: “If you want to go to Jungfraujoch and other peaks in the Jungfrau region (from Interlaken onwards), the Top of Europe Pass (TEP) will be the best pass for you. If you want to take more boats on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the Jungfrau Travel Pass (JTP) is a more suitable pass. If you want to travel more, for example want to go to Blausee, Brienzer Rothorn… Bernese Oberland Pass (BOP) might be the cheapest option. If you are not going to Jungfraujoch but just want to visit mountain villages like Murren, Wengen or Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, or if you are visiting other parts of Switzerland, perhaps the Swiss Travel Pass (STP) will be the best choice”.

travel pass in interlaken

Swiss Travel Pass (Mobile Pass)

I didn’t buy a travel pass in advance online, but the first morning in Interlaken, I went to Interlaken West station, entered the station, I gave the my itinerary of places I wanted to go to the ticket saleswoman to ask again to confirm which pass should I buy because I was still afraid. Well, the ticket seller also advised me to buy a BOP pass, so that’s a peace of mind. After buying the pass, she gave me a map of BOP with a lot of information inside. Visit the link of the Bernese Oberland pass with all the necessary information you can research in advance to take full advantage of the offer.

travel pass in interlaken

I stayed at Interlaken for 3 days just enough to buy a pass for 3 days. In the high mountains, the weather changes erratically, I went in the summer but also encountered rainy and cloudy days. These days are not suitable for going to the high mountains. So with this pass, you can rest assured to change the itinerary as you want without having to set a schedule and buy tickets in advance for the cable car routes up the mountain or the riverboat. Extremely convenient.

Where to go and what to do on my journey

Lauterbrunnen valley and staubbach waterfall (# interlaken itinerary 3 days).

travel pass in interlaken

After buying the BOP pass, I took a bus to Wilderswil station and from here took the train to go to the Lauterbrunnen valley. Another way is to take the train from Interlaken West to Interlaken Ost, and from there take the train to Lauterbrunnen. Travel time was about 35 minutes.

The name Lauterbrunnen – meaning “many waterfalls”, is only 1km wide, but this valley possesses 72 waterfalls. Lauterbrunnen valley is twice as deep as Yosemite (an extremely famous valley in the US). Lauterbrunnen is surrounded by 3 majestic peaks including Eiger (3970 m), Mönch (4107 m) and Jungfrau (4158 m). It is also one of the deepest valleys in the Alps. It is also one of the largest nature reserves in Switzerland.

travel pass in interlaken

Lauterbrunnen valley is the perfect picture that nature bestows on Switzerland. This place attracts visitors thanks to the beautiful natural scenery created by stretching mountains, green forests, endless golden flower meadows and hundreds of large and small waterfalls flowing from the mountains.

travel pass in interlaken

Mürren Village

After visiting Lauterbrunnen, I took the cable car to Mürren. After a cable car trip, then transferred to a train to go to the village, this time it was pouring rain.

Mürren is a traditional Walser mountain village in the Bernese Highlands of Switzerland, at the foot of the Schilthorn mountain overlooking the poetic and majestic Mont Blanc. This village will be most beautiful when it is clear, sunny or snowy. I went on a cloudy rainy day, so I couldn’t really feel the beauty of the village, which made me regret it. When I first went to Europe, whenever it rained, I would decide to stay at home and not go anywhere. But European rain is also rarely torrential, usually just light rain, most people often wear waterproof jackets and cover and go. If it rains, don’t be discouraged!

travel pass in interlaken

The geographical position is located on a towering mountain of 1650m above sea level, so from here you can see the surrounding mountains very clearly. The village is completely isolated from the hustle and bustle of life outside.

travel pass in interlaken

The cafes along the main path, looking over the high mountains. Sitting here on a rainy afternoon, sipping a cup of hot coffee, you will feel time standing still.

travel pass in interlaken

From Mürren there is a cable car station to go to Schilthorn. But with BOP pass, you only get 50% off and have to pay an additional CHF 42.80 for the round trip cable car ticket. This mountain is very famous because it used to shoot the movie James Bond 007. I was planning to go to Jungfrau so I didn’t go to this mountain anymore.

Murren village

Trümmelbach Falls

From Murren, I returned to Lauterbrunnen before continuing to take the train to Wengen. On the way, the bus stops at the Trümmelbach waterfall station. This spot I did not know and was not in my itinerary before. But also out of curiosity, I jumped out of the bus to see. The entrance fee to enter this waterfall is 14 CHF. All quick decisions in Switzerland are paid with a pretty high amount, everyone.

Walking a bit, the waterfall is nowhere to be seen because Trümmelbach is hidden behind the mountain. You take the elevator and then take another very steep elevator, lying in a dark cave to go inside the waterfall. Trümmelbach Falls consists of a series of ten glacial waterfalls that deliver 20,000 liters of water per second. It fell from a height of 200 meters. The majestic waterfalls have formed spiral canyons inside the limestone mountains. These waterfalls remained a mystery until 1877, when a tunnel was dug deep into the mountain.

travel pass in interlaken

The amount of water in the falls varies greatly. From December to March only a small stream flows under the thick ice.

travel pass in interlaken

But in the summer when the ice melts, the amount of water is so huge. I went up the stairs to follow the waterfall but hearing the rumbling sound of the waterfall was really scary, the water splashed all over my body.

travel pass in interlaken

This place is suitable to go in the summer because at this time there are strong flows of water and you will feel the power and sound of the waterfall. However, it is not suitable for young children because it is quite dangerous and climbs the stairs along the waterfall a lot, and is always wet and easy to slip.

travel pass in interlaken

After leaving the waterfall, I continued to take the bus to the train station to Wengen. The village is quite similar to Mürren but is located at a lower altitude. From Wengen you can take the cable car to Männlichen, a mountain 2343 m high and free with BOP pass. The cable car up the mountain is only open from May to October, the last one from Wengen to Männlichen at 4:50pm – 5:10pm and the last one from Männlichen BACK to Wengen at 5:10pm – 5:30pm, there are slight variations between months so you should pay attention to the time. I was busy playing and didn’t find out first, so when I got there, the cable car was closed. So if you have a BOP like me, you should go to Wegen to go to Männlichen first, then go to Murren later.

travel pass in interlaken

After the trip, I went back to the hostel to eat and rest, the end of the day was quite interesting and also quite tired. Although the weather is rainy and cloudy, it is still possible to visit. Unfortunately, I couldn’t go up to Männlichen, but I added Trümmelbach waterfall to the itinerary. Travel is not only a destination but also a journey with countless colors. The picture of Switzerland will be written in the next post, come with me!
