M5 Roadworks

The following roadworks have been reported by various highways agencies and official transport sources.Click on a roadworks item to view more details on the traffic map.

The M5 motorway in the UK is a motorway running from junction 8 of the M4 motorway near Maidenhead, Berkshire to Exeter in Devon and is approximately 200km (125 miles) long. It opened in sections between 1960 and 1975 and is part of the Intra-Urban Motorway Network.

The M5 motorway is considered to be a relatively safe motorway. According to the Department for Transport statistics, the M5 had the second-lowest rate in England of fatal and serious collisions between 201315. An Alliance of South West Road Safety Groups revealed an overall reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the M5 between 201115.

Overall, the M5 has an average road safety rating in line with the majority of other UK motorways, with a lower overall rate of death and serious injury than average.

Live M5 updates as car overturns and causes huge delays

There are long delays on the M5 this afternoon after a collision which saw a car end up on its roof, blocking traffic.

There are long delays on the M5 this afternoon , Wednesday, May 1, after a car overturned on the northbound carriageway. Three lanes have been closed on the northbound side of the motorway at junction 19 since around 4pm, when the crash was first reported.

It is not clear how many vehicles were involved in the crash , nor whether anybody has been injured as a result. Traffic cameras show a car flipped onto its roof. According to traffic monitor Inrix, the crash took place on the Avonmouth bridge.

Inrix says: "Slow traffic and three lanes closed due to an overturned car on M5 northbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J18 M49. Lanes two, three and four (of four) are closed, lane four (of four) is also closed on the southbound side."

Two lanes reopened

Two of the four lanes on the M5 northbound have been reopened, following the collision between junctions 18 (Avonmouth) and 19 (Portishead).

There are still long delays northbound

Long delays and two lanes closed due to overturned car and recovery work on M5 Avonmouth Bridge Northbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road (Portishead) to J18 M49. Congestion to J20 ( Clevedon ). Lanes three and four ( of four) are closed.

Southbound has been reopened

2 (of 4) lanes are closed on the #m5 in #somerset northbound between j19 #portishead and j18 #bristol due to a collision involving an overturned vehicle., there are long delays elsewhere in bristol.

Long delays due to people slowing to look at accident on the opposite side and earlier lane closures on M5 Southbound at J18 M49. Congestion to J17 (Cribbs Causeway). Lanes three and four (of four) were closed for emergency services.

The M5 is the primary motorway linking the Midlands to the West Country. On its route south-west, the M5 passes Bromwich, Birmingham and then through the Sandwell Valley. Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa, Worcester, Bristol and Taunton are all on its 163-mile route, before it finally finishes up at Exeter.

For the majority of the time it is a standard three-lane motorway, but because it reduces to just two lanes in places it can be prone to congestion and other traffic issues. While it is not typically the busiest part of the UK road network, Friday afternoons, summer holidays and bank holidays can be particularly hectic times to hop on the M5.

The history of the M5 

The first 26 miles of the M5 motorway opened in 1962 and stretched from junction four at Lydiate Ash to the trumpet junction at Tewkesbury where it joins the M50. Despite Worcestershire County Council, the local police force and the County Surveyor of Worcestershire pushing for a three-lane route, the Ministry of Transport insisted that a two-lane motorway was to be built. Consequently, when the decision was made to widen the Worcester section of the M5 it cost £123 million to make the alteration.

From 1967 to 1970, the M5 was extended north of junction four, along with the addition of Frankely services. Much of the construction was built as an elevated three-lane motorway using concrete pillars as support. The M5 was also extended southwards, from 1967 to 1977, through Somerset and down to Exeter, using a three-lane motorway layout once again.

All traffic was held on the M5 following a crash this evening (Monday, May 6). The crash, first reported before 9pm, occurred on the southbound carriageway between junction 26 for Wellington and junction 27 for Tiverton.

Traffic officers assisted at the scene and help make the road safe. As a result of the incident, travel services reported slow traffic in the area. Motorists were advised to allow extra journey time and avoid the M5.

An update from traffic monitoring service Inrix read at the time: "All traffic being temporarily held due to accident on M5 Southbound from J26 A38 (Wellington) to J27 A361 ( Tiverton )."

M5 traffic live: Overturned motorhome causing huge delays as motorway closed

Incident reported southbound near Stroud

Traffic was queueing on the M5 after a collision involving an overturned motorhome closed a stretch of the motorway in Gloucestershire. All lanes were closed with queueing traffic due to overturned motorhome from J13 A419 (Stroud) to J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield).

The M5 crash came at the same time as a serious crash on the M4 in Wiltshire which has closed a section of the road westbound from junction 17 to junction 16. More on that crash here .

Traffic easing off on M4 Westbound

Traffic easing on the M4 following an earlier accident on M4 Westbound from J16 A3182 Hay Lane (Swindon West) to J17 A350 (Chippenham).

Delays near Prince of Wales Bridge

There are also delays and diversions in place along the M4 near the Prince of Wales Bridge. All traffic has come to a standstill on the M4 as emergency services deal with a car fire.

Traffic easing off

Traffic is now easing, traffic monitoring site Inrix has confirmed following the earlier accident on M4 Eastbound from J17 A350 (Chippenham) to J16 A3182 Hay Lane (Swindon West).

M5 now open but miles of congestions

National Highways South West has confirmed that the M5 in Gloucestershire is now open southbound between J13 (at Stroud) and J14 (at Stone) following the earlier overturned campervan.

It said: "There are delays of 15 minutes and about two miles of congestion remain on approach."

HELP! Please sign our petition to reinstate the live CCTV traffic camera feeds for the M5

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M5 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

We have been told by National Highways that the camera feeds for the M5 will be reinstated shortly.

Advance notification of planned full carriageway closures on England’s motorways and major A roads.

M25 Junction 9 - 10 full closure

The M25 between junction 9 (Leatherhead) and 10 (Wisley) will be closed in both directions from Friday 10 May 9pm to Monday 13 May 6am .

The full closure is needed to install a new bridge. If you have to travel, make sure that you allow plenty of extra time for your journey.

Closures are listed by start date, select a day from the row above the closures list to see the planned closures for that day. Closures generally run 8pm-6am unless they are over 12 hours. If you are travelling in the early morning, please note that your route may be impacted by closures starting the evening before.

If a road is listed under ‘Filters’, it means that there will be a full closure on that road at some point in the next seven days. If there are no full closures scheduled for a particular road, it will not be listed.

The information will be updated twice daily Monday to Friday except for bank holidays and weekends, this will be updated the previous working day.

M5 closures: April and May 2024 dates and everything you need to know

A section of the motorway, which runs between the Midlands and southwest England, will be closed overnight for the next four weeks

It’s easy to take motorways for granted. But when you think about it, being able to zoom from Wales to London in two-and-a-bit hours, or from Birmingham to Devon in three is actually kind of mad. So when these huge roads close, like the M25 did back in March , it can have quite the impact. 

The latest motorway to face closures is the M5, which links the Midlands to the southwest of England. Sections of the M5 will be blocked off over various periods for the next four weeks, so if you frequently use the road, you’ll need to watch out. H ere’s everything you need to know about M5 closures throughout April and May 2024. 

When is the M5 closing in April and May?

Parts of the motorway will be closed overnight (from 9pm to 5am) from Monday, April 29 to Thursday, May 23 when work is expected to be done and dusted. The motorway will be open as normal during the day and there won’t be any closures on weekends. 

Where is the M5 closed exactly?

The closure will be on section between J14 for Falfield Interchange and J17 for Cribbs Causeway. It will affect both northbound and southbound journeys. 

Why is it closing?

The road will be closed off to allow for concrete repairs and new joints to be installed on Almondsbury bridge. 

What’s the advice for drivers?

There will be a clearly signed diversion route set up for late night and early morning drivers and National Highways has told travellers to factor extra time into their journeys. 

What’s been said about the closures?

A spokesperson from National Highways said: ‘We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community is kept to a minimum, and apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause.’

2025 BMW M5 rumored to make 718 horsepower, that's the good news

The bad news: it will reportedly weigh 5,370 pounds.

More intel courtesy of BMW whisperer ynguldyn, an oracle concerning future product out Munich who contributes regularly to the Bimmerpost forums. This time the proclamations touch on the 2025 BMW M5 , the longtime super sedan that will pull an M5 Touring wagon to the states as well. The bullet points start with powertrains, which will feature the hybrid setup from the XM . In the hottest version of the XM, the so-called XM Label, the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six and an electric motor combine to produce a square 738 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. In the M5 , we're told the paring will make a combined 718 horsepower and 760 lb-ft. These figures generously up the ante from the previous-gen M5's 600 hp and 553 lb-ft.

Next up are dimensions, which are said to grow by 1.4 inches in length and 2.8 inches in width, with wheelbase stretched slightly to make room for the new M5's suspension setup. Assuming that footprint is based on the U.S. variant, the coming M5 will be 197.8 inches long and 76.7 inches wide, making it 2.9 inches wider than today's 2024 540i xDrive.   

The price buyers will pay for what is certain to be titanic performance could be a curb weight pegged at 2,435 kilograms. That's 5,368 pounds. If true, it's 1,023 pounds more than the previous M5, and 1,002 pounds more than the 2024 540i xDrive. We write "if true" because this weight is also more than BMW's claimed weight of 5,247 pounds for the battery-electric i5 M60, which would be the biggest potential shock.

No matter where the scale lands, the M5's wheels and tires will expand a tad so as to hustle that heft, going from the 275/40 front and 285/40 rear tires on the last M5's 19-inch wheels to a staggered setup of 285/40 tires on 20-inch front wheels and 295/35 tires on 21-inch rear wheels. 

So the M in M5 could stand for "Mega" in an entirely new way. Though that can apply to the M5's German competition, too. The new Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid throws a combined 670 hp and 686 lb-ft to rollick its 5,302-pound curb weight. We're waiting for info on the updated Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door, but the 2023 variant in plain S guise makes 630 hp and 664 lb-ft and weighs 4,751 pounds. Coming generational updates and the S E Performance trim that puts out as much as 805 hp and 1,047 lb-ft in the latest AMG GT Coupe are going to work the scale harder. However, considering the AMG's output, we might be entering an era where an AMG is the lightest of the Germans, with the best power-to-weight ratio.

The 2025 M5 sedan is said to enter production in July of this year, the wagon in November. We're looking forward to the press conferences for this one.

M5 traffic: Travel updates for South West as delays hit the region's roads

Roads in the South West saw congestion as people returned from their Easter getaways.

Last weekend, the RAC predicted major delays in the South West over the bank holiday. Some roads experienced queueing traffic today (14 April) as people headed home.

Two lanes on the M5 Southbound were closed due to a crash at Junction 25 near Taunton earlier today.

The traffic monitoring service Inrix said: "Two lanes closed and heavy traffic due to accident on M5 Southbound from J25 A358 (Taunton) to J26 A38 (Wellington)."

One lane was closed causing heavy traffic due to broken down vehicle on M5 Northbound from J19 A369 Martcombe Road, Portishead, to J18, M49 Interchange.

Heavy traffic developed due to a broken down van at Junction 19 on the M32 in Bristol.

A303 delays

The A303 in Mere, Wiltshire was also blocked in both directions and saw queuing traffic due to a one-vehicle crash near the Barrow Street Charnage turn off.

A38 near North Petherton

There was a single-car collision on the A38 near North Petheron early this morning, shortly after midnight. All five occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital.

The road was shut for a number of hours but has since reopened.

A379 in Kingsbridge, Devon

The A379 is closed both ways due to a crash which happened between Plymouth Road in Kingsbridge and Palegate Cross in Churchstow.
