Below, we’ve listed several ideas for winter getaways in each state region. This will help you choose the best getaway for how far you want to drive from your home base.

Northeast Wisconsin Winter Getaways

Vilas county: explore a winter wonderland.

Vilas County, Wisconsin, a popular summer tourist destination, tends to clear out in the winter. This makes it the perfect time to explore the area minus the crowds.

Book a cabin, cozy up at the fireplace, and enjoy the winter wonderland around you. 

The area is perfect for many outdoor activities, including cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. 

Our favorite thing to do in the area is hike in the winter. The trail around Fallison Lake is stunning in winter.

Are you interested in ice fishing? Hire a guide if you’re new to the sport, and start hauling in the area’s walleye, bass, panfish, and northern pike. For advanced ice fishers, consider entering Vilas County’s fishing tournaments.

Another fun and unique thing to do near Vilas County is to check out the sled dog races in February in Land O’ Lakes. 

Where to Stay in Vilas County

The area of Boulder Junction is a great place to stay for a Northern Wisconsin winter adventure. The Acorn Lodge is centrally located and a great base for exploring the area.

Where to Eat in Vilas County

We are Wisconsin Supper Club fans, and one of our favorites is McGregor’s Blink Bonnie in St. Germain. And eating here in Winter is great as the lines aren’t as long as they would be in the warmer months.

Gooch’s A- One is also a great bar with food. Here, you’ll see all of the snowmobilers taking a break from the trails.

Door County: Catch the Best Sunsets and Sunrises

If you’ve been to Door County in the summer, you already know it’s a great place to view stunning sunsets along Lake Michigan. But here’s a fun fact: Sunrises and sunsets are even more intense in the winter! Air circulation increases as temperatures drop, revealing brighter colors than you see during warmer months. 

To catch the sunrise, visit the east-facing lakeside of the peninsula. Cave Point in Sturgeon Bay or Newport State Park offers great sunrise views.

Door County sunsets are best viewed from the west-facing Green Bay side of the peninsula. Try a spot like Sunset Beach Park in Fish Creek or Waterfront Park in Sister Bay .

Door County is also great for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or wine-tasting! Our favorite snowshoeing or winter hiking places are Peninsula State Park and The Ridges Sanctuary . Peninsula also has some of the best cross-country ski trails in Wisconsin.

In February, Door County hosts Winterfest in Fish Creek. Typically, the first weekend of February, this event is full of food, drinks, an annual “Fruit Loop Fun Run” and a Stumpf Fiddle Contest.

Where to Stay in Door County

Book a stay at Glidden Lodge on the shores of Lake Michigan and enjoy the many things to do in Sturgeon Bay . And don’t miss out on a delicious dinner at one of the best Wisconsin supper clubs , Donnie’s Glidden Lodge.

My parents stay here almost every year for their anniversary in February.

If you want to be closer to the Door County winter action, pick a place around Fish Creek, like the White Gull Inn . It’s a great central location for exploring all the winter fun in Door County.

Where to Eat in Door County

There are plenty of places open in the winter to experience some of the great food and drink Door County has to offer.

Grab dinner at Wickman House (reservations recommended), and be ready to excite your tastebuds. This restaurant is one of our favorites in Wisconsin.

The White Gull Inn in Fish Creek has a delicious brunch. Get the Cherry Stuffed French Toast, and your tummy will be happy.

Most of the wineries are open in winter as well. And doing a wine tasting is a great way to spend a few hours on a winter day. Island Orchard Cider in Ellison Bay is also one of our favorite stops in Door County. They have some of our favorite ciders.

Green Bay: Enjoy Packer History and Curling Fun

Green Bay , Wisconsin, has more to it than just the Packers. With that said, it’s still hard to separate Green Bay from its legendary football team.

Spend a day touring Lambeau Field , and after your tour, take advantage of the addition of ice skating and sledding outside the stadium. 

And if you want to immerse yourself in Wisconsin culture further, try out the winter sport of curling. 

Curling is one of the weirder Olympic sports for the uninitiated: competing teams slide a large stone down a runway of ice, sweeping the ice ahead of it with a broom to either speed or slow the stone’s trajectory toward a goal. It’s weirdly addicting.

In addition to its many leagues, Green Bay Curling Club offers “Learn 2 Curl” clinics and rentals for private events.

My parents love to stay at St. Brendon’s Inn when they venture to Green Bay for a getaway. St. Brendon’s Inn is a quant Irish Pub and Inn where you’ll feel right at home. Room rates are reasonable, and you’ll feel like family.

Green Bay isn’t a big city, but it does have some great restaurants to fuel your adventure. Some favorites include Stella’s for dishes created with local ingredients or Vintage Cantina for some delicious tacos.

Northwest Wisconsin Winter Getaways

Bayfield: go on a dog sledding adventure.

Dog lovers, this one’s for you! 

Located in the hills of Bayfield overlooking Lake Superior, Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing lets you get your Iditarod on. 

Don’t worry, Wolfsong’s guides will teach you! You’ll get a hands-on experience that includes feeding and petting the dogs, harnessing them, and driving the dog sled yourself. But you can also ride as a passenger with one of the guides.

Depending on the package you book, a hot meal is served out on the trail. Tours last roughly 3 hours but vary by package. Book solo or with a small group.

There are also plenty of other things to do in Bayfield in the Winter, such as hiking along the Lake Superior shoreline .

The Old Rittenhouse Inn is an outstanding Bed and Breakfast in the area with stunning rooms. They also have a wonderful restaurant onsite. Another bed and breakfast option is Queen’s View .

For casual fare, check our Manypenny Bistro . And if you are in the Washburn area just south of Bayfield, check out The Fat Radish or Dalou’s Bistro for pizza.

Eau Claire: Explore Breweries and Get Your Game On 

Eau Claire , Wisconsin, AKA the “Kubb Capital of North America,” is a great destination to try some off-the-beaten-path gaming or just explore the area in winter.

Kubb, pronounced “Koob,” is a lawn game involving wooden sticks to knock down wooden blocks. Also called “Viking Chess,” the Kubb World Championship occurs annually on an island in Sweden. The U.S. National Kubb Championships bring competitors from all over the country to Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

You can play Kubb at several places throughout Eau Claire, including one of the best breweries in Wisconsin , The Brewing Projekt .

The area is also known for the sport of “Crokicurl.” Crokicurl combines the Canadian board game, “Crokinole” and curling. You can find a Crokicurl rink just a few miles from downtown Eau Claire at River Prairie Park in Altoona, Wisconsin. 

The U.S. Crokicurl Championships take place here in January!

One of our favorite things to do in Eau Claire (and we stop every time we drive through the area), is to hang out at The Brewing Projekt . So try it even if you don’t go there to play games.

Hayward: Try Out Fat Tire Winter Biking

Fat tire biking, or fat biking, is cycling through snowy trails on a mountain bike with, you guessed it, fat tires. The sport has become extremely popular in Northern Wisconsin. The area has several bike trail systems, including the CAMBA trail . 

For an epic experience, check out Up North Guided Tours . They will provide you with everything you need for a fun outdoor winter adventure. 

If you head to Hayward later in Winter, the Birkie Trail is the route used for the Fat Bike Birkie , the country’s premier snow bike race. You can watch the March race or check out the trail anytime for fun.

Fat tire bike rentals, including New Moon Ski in Hayward, WI, are available everywhere. You can wind down after your adventure with an old-fashioned from any of Hayward’s supper clubs … a true Wisconsin tradition.

There are plenty of vacation rentals in Hayward, but one that stands out is Lakeside Lily Pad . It’s a tiny cabin perfect for a cozy stay for two people.

Another stunning option would be McCormick House Inn . They have gorgeous rooms and a lovely restaurant on-site.

The Tavern at White Stag Farm is a local favorite that offers anything from delicious burgers to larger entrees. Check out The Robin Nest Cafe for classic diner breakfast food for breakfast.

Central Wisconsin Winter Getaways

Wausau: ski your stress away.

Wisconsin has many great ski destinations, but Granite Peak in Wausau is the granddaddy. Granite Peak features 60 runs for skiers, snowboarders and the Midwest’s fastest lift system. 

Rentals and lessons are available for all levels. And if downhill skiing isn’t for you, Wausau is home to some of Wisconsin’s best cross-country ski trails. Nine Mile Forest has 18.3 miles of trails that run from beginner to advanced. 

Wausau itself is worth a visit. When you need a break from shredding, check out Wausau’s many museums, including the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum . 

For a midday drink, stop by White Water Music Hall . They have coffee, beer, and a full menu. Check out the music calendar to see if there is a show while you are in town.

We’ve been dying to stay at The Stewart Inn in Wausau for some time now. This luxurious but quaint hotel has won awards like top hotel in Wisconsin. It looks so cute, and it’s a perfect location in Wausau.

Another option is a sister property of The Stewart Inn that is a bit more outside of the city, called Owl Ridge Cabin . This property is stunning, with its large windows overlooking a beautiful landscape.

Green Lake: Warm Up at Craft Breweries and Wineries

There are plenty of outdoorsy things to do in and around Green Lake , including ice skating, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. 

The Green Lakes Visitors Center has miles of trails for skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. 

And if the lake ice conditions are right, you can check out the ice boaters . A sport where boats sail along the ice.

And while you are here, why not warm up afterward with a nice adult beverage? There are great options in the Green Lake area. 

• Knuth Brewing Company : This brewery features a variety of craft beers, and some nights feature live music.
• Town Square Tap : This brewpub serves as the taproom for Fox Tale Brewing’s genuine craft ginger beer. Try it on its own or have it in a mixed drink.
• Vines & Rushes Winery : Wisconsin isn’t the easiest place to grow grapes, so many Wisconsin wineries import from out of state. But Vines & Rushes Winery goes the extra mile to provide its customers with wines from actual Wisconsin-grown grapes.
• Lunch Creek Vineyards & Winery : This winery prides itself on its family-friendly vibes and the fruit they grow to incorporate into their wines, including apples, cherries, blueberries, rhubarb, and more.
• Rushford Meadery & Winery : This winery was recognized as a 2019 Discover Wisconsin Choice Destination. They produce their mead and wine as well as cider.

Where to Stay in Green Lake

Green Lake has beautiful bed and breakfast options, making it a great option for a cozy winter getaway. But if you are looking for a hotel, neighboring Ripon has plenty of options for you to choose from.

The McConnell Inn is an affordable Bed and Breakfast with options for jacuzzi tubs and fireplaces. Another option is the Greenway House , which boasts delightfully decorated rooms and is located in a perfect place for walkability around Green Lake. The Miller’s Daughter is also in a great location, just a few blocks from downtown. We haven’t stayed here, but the reviews all point to wonderful hosts and relaxing stays.

Where to Eat in Green Lake

For your morning coffee, check out Sassafras Specialties . They have coffee, tea, and smoothies if you need some substance to get you through your morning. I know this recommendation will sound a little unusual, but don’t miss out on trying Walk the Dog . This Wisconsin gem serves up hot dogs with toppings you’ve never dreamed of. And they also have delicious gluten-free buns!

You’ll also enjoy this destination for its bird-watching, woodland, ponds, and organic farmland. Open to sledders day and night, make sure you try out the snow tubing hill. Relax afterward at one of their cozy bonfires.

Wisconsin dells: experience a whole other side of the dells.

America’s water park capital doesn’t sound as appealing in subzero temperatures, but don’t be fooled; there’s a ton to do in the Wisconsin Dells during winter.

• Snowmobiling : Wisconsin Dells is one of the most beautiful natural areas in the region. There’s a 25,000-mile system of snowmobile trails to explore. 
• Ziplining : Remains open year-round in the Dells. Vertical Illusions even offers a snowshoe zip-line package. 
• Horseback riding : Wisconsin Dells has multiple stables that allow riders to go on trail rides, take lessons, or go on covered wagon rides.
• Wizard Quest : Solve puzzles and collect prizes in this indoor maze. It’s a blast and feels like you are in a live video game.
• Margarita’s Indoor Swim-up Bar : Winter’s indoor waterparks are enormous in the Dells. Try out this indoor swim-up bar for an adults-only experience.

Madison: High-Class Holiday at the Edgewater

Sparing no detail for their holiday decorations, The Edgewater Hotel is one of the prettiest places in Wisconsin. We’re talking ice sculptures, fresh pine boughs, and a 40-foot-tall Christmas tree.

This historic hotel downtown sits on the edge of Lake Mendota and has hosted the likes of Elvis Presley, Elton John, Bob Hope, Bob Marley, and the Dalai Lama.

Accommodations are offered in various room styles, from luxury to reasonably priced options. 

Whether or not you’re a guest at the hotel, you have to go to the Edgewater, which features a beautiful ice skating rink overlooking Lake Mendota and firepits to rent.

There are also multiple restaurants and other food options on the premises. You can enjoy fine dining overlooking the lake from The Statehouse or grab a hot cocoa or apple cider after skating from The Icehouse .

And if it’s really cold, you can walk out on frozen Lake Mendota, a favorite pastime of UW-Madison students, to an at-scale replica of Lady Liberty’s head and torch peek out from the frozen lake each winter.

If you don’t want to stay at The Edgewater, you’ll have plenty of other options for accommodations in the Madison area.

The Hotel Ruby Marie is located just off Capital Square and is a perfect home base for your Madison getaway. It’s also reasonably priced. Other amazing options for lodging are The Buckingham Inn and The Mansion Hill Inn .

With so many options, it’s hard to suggest only a few places to eat in Madison.

For brunch, Marigold Kitchen off of Capital Square has nourished diners since I was in college 20 years ago.

Natt Spil is a hidden gem for global-inspired small plates (cash only). A Plaza burger with cheese at The Plaza Tavern will hit the spot for lunch. And Sardine is the perfect option for a delicious upscale but approachable meal.

New Glarus: Make an Escape to Europe

Swiss immigrants founded New Glarus in 1845; by the looks of it, not much has changed. 

Pay a visit to the Swiss Historical Village & Museum to learn more about the culture. Of course, you can also just walk around town. Take in delightful European architecture as you pop in and out of the many shops selling European goods, such as the imported Polish pottery and bakeware at The Bramble Patch or the Edelweiss Cheese Shop .

Of course, if you’ve ever been to Wisconsin, New Glarus will be familiar to you for its famous brewery, home of the favorite local ale, Spotted Cow. New Glarus Brewing Compan y is worth a trip for its tours, gift shop full of Spotted Cow swag, and the tasting area in the woods, designed to resemble a Bavarian village.

The nearby town of Paoli is also a great stop for some shopping and food.

New Glarus is a small town with only a few options for lodging. The Chalet Landhaus is in the middle of town and will definitely give you that European village feel.

Where to Eat in New Glarus

Stop at any local restaurant serving European fare like Wienerschnitzel and Bratwurst when you get hungry. It’s great fun pronouncing their German names, like Glarner Stube and Puempel’s Olde Tavern .

Spring Green: Explore Oddities and Architecture

If you could use an indoor adventure, House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin, is one of the more unique experiences. 

It’s easy to see why this architectural gem is often mistaken for the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. However, Alex Jordan built the massive structure on a rock chimney in 1945 and opened it up to the public to enjoy in 1960. 

House on the Rock features attractions and oddities like the tribute to nostalgia, elaborate self-playing organs, dollhouses, and massive carousels. 

If you’re brave, walk out into the “infinity room.” The room is like a glass hallway that juts 218 feet over the valley. Once inside, you can feel the room swaying in the breeze.

For a different take on architecture, a tour of Taliesin cannot be missed if you are in the Spring Green area.

Taliesin, the former estate of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a marvel of architecture and gives you a fascinating insight into Wright’s life. Today, Taliesin is a museum and tourist attraction, one of the main reasons people visit Spring Green.

Snowshoeing at Governor Dodge State Park is an excellent option for outdoor activities.

Southeast Wisconsin Winter Getaways

Lake geneva: explore ice castles.

Located at the Geneva National Resort & Club , do not miss the magical Lake Geneva Ice Castles . You’ll find frozen wonders such as ice sculptures, an ice maze, ice slides, frozen crawl tunnels, caverns, and archways to explore. Elsa would approve! 

Up the magic and go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride while you’re there. 

You can typically visit from January through late February or early March, though operation dates depend on weather conditions. You’ll want to stay tuned for when they announce their opening date each year and book your tickets in advance.

In addition to the ice castles, there are two downhill ski resorts, cross-country skiing in Big Foot State Park , and ice skating at several places around town. 

For some indoor fun, check out the world’s largest refractor telescope at Yerkes Observatory. Visiting this observatory is a must-do for any star lover or anyone interested in the world above Earth.

Where to Stay in Lake Geneva

You can’t go wrong with the many lodging options in Lake Geneva.

Seven Oaks Inn is the perfect Bed and Breakfast for those looking for a romantic winter getaway. The Lazy Cloud Inn is another fantastic option for romance.

For a bit more upscale, Maxwell Mansion is a cute boutique hotel in the center of Lake Geneva.

For breakfast, the Simple Cafe is a cozy cafe with delicious breakfast and lunch fare. There is also a bakery for some grab-n-go items. Joni’s Diner is also great for your classic diner vibe and fare.

Flat Iron Tap is the go-to place for a great burger in Lake Geneva. They also have a great beer tap list.

Milwaukee: History, Brewing, and Museums

Milwaukee is a great place to visit in winter. With plenty of things to do in winter and places to hang out, a weekend in Milwaukee will help the winter fly by. 

Your days will be filled with many adventures between the museums, breweries, and restaurants. We even have suggestions for one or two days in Milwaukee to check out.

The Harley Davidson Museum is fascinating, even if you aren’t into bikes. And if you are more into art, the Milwaukee Art Museum along Lake Michigan is gorgeous. And if it’s around the holidays, don’t miss out on checking out the decorated Old Streets of Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Public Museum .

For a memorable ice skating experience visit the Lake Delton Ice Arena . Though this arena is host to hockey leagues, public skating sessions are also offered in the venue every Sunday and Wednesday. You can also find plenty of snowboarding and skiing opportunities in the Christmas Mountain Village.

Go Sledding

Sledding is definitely one of our favorite ways to experience Wisconsin during the winter. Fortunately, there are tons of places to do this, meaning finding somewhere to feel the thrill of racing downhill on a sled shouldn’t be a problem at all. 

One great place to go sledding is the Grand Geneva Resort. We love that this resort provides comfortable accommodations, meaning you can make your sledding adventure last a few days. While you’re there, be sure to check out the many other activities the resort has to offer. 

If Grand Geneva Resort doesn’t seem like your thing, don’t worry. There are plenty of other fantastic options for sledding in Wisconsin . 

Experience Skiing

Want to do something a little more challenging than sledding? Downhill skiing might be just the thing. Wilmot Mountain Ski Resort is an awesome place for skiing and snowboarding. It offers plenty of amazing ski hills and is the perfect place to downhill ski with the family. 

Of course, there are plenty of other places that provide downhill skiing opportunities as well. These include such favorites as Granite Peak in Wausau, Devil’s Head in Merrimac, Whitecap Mountain in Upson, and Tyrol Basin in Mount Horeb. 

Those who prefer cross-country skiing or snowshoeing are also in for a treat, as Wisconsin has plenty of cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing trails to choose from. One fantastic place to experience this type of skiing is Newport State Park up in Door County, WI. Skiing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are great outdoor activities!

Enjoy Tubing

Another wonderful way to enjoy the Wisconsin snow is by snow tubing. Tubing is awesome because it often offers more speed and comfort than sledding. Additionally, most tubing hills have a lift or tow rope, making getting to the top of the hill a whole lot easier. 

That said, while sledding is often free, you will have to pay to use the majority of tubing runs. The good news? We think it’s totally worth it!

Have a Dog Sledding Adventure

Most people assume dog sledding is just for people exploring the Arctic. Fortunately, this isn’t the case at all. In fact, dog sledding is something a lot of Wisconsin locals enjoy each winter, and it is a ton of fun. 

One of the best places to go on a dog sled adventure while in the state is Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing. This place offers slower-paced morning adventures, as well as afternoon dog sledding runs for those who prefer to make-believe they are in a sled dog race. 

It is worth mentioning that only people aged 5 and up are allowed to go on the adventures offered by this company, so be prepared to find a sitter if you have a little one.

Try Ice Fishing

So far, everything we’ve mentioned has taken advantage of the Wisconsin snow. That said, ice can be equally wonderful. For instance, you might choose to give ice fishing a whirl.

Ice fishing is a popular activity at a number of Wisconsin lakes, including Lake Mendota and Lake Geneva. Of course, you will want to make sure you have the right gear and know-how. Additionally, you will want to know how to check if a frozen lake is safe before you ever step foot onto the ice for any reason. 

Once you do know the ins and outs of ice fishing, it can be an incredibly relaxing and rewarding activity and is a good time whether it’s enjoyed with friends or all on your own.

Do Some Ice Skating

Of course, fishing isn’t the only thing you can do on the ice. Ice skating is another option, and is one many people find enjoyable. After all, who wouldn’t love to glide like a dream along the top of ice?

There are many places to go skating in Wisconsin in winter. There is the option of skating on a frozen lake, but this can be a major safety hazard, so you will want to make sure you know what you’re doing. A better idea is to visit one of the many established ice skating places. 

Some of our favorite ice skating spots in Wisconsin include the Edgewater Hotel in Madison, Winter Park in Minocqua, Slice of Ice in Milwaukee, Ice Road in Bayfield, Mill Pond Ice Skating Rink in Plymouth, and Titletown in Green Bay. 

Tour an Ice Cave

Have you ever seen an ice cave? If not, your wintertime visit to Wisconsin is the perfect opportunity to check one out, and we definitely recommend you do so. 

The Apostle Island Mainland Ice Caves are absolutely magical and unlike anything else you’ll ever see. In fact, some of the ice formations seem almost otherworldly. Be sure to take a camera so you can record the beauty of this amazing winter wonderland. 

There are seasons when the Ice Caves are not open. So be sure to check out their site to confirm if they are open.

Ride a Snow Train

Have you ever ridden a snow train? To be honest, we had never even heard of such a thing before, and to be fair, “snow train” might be an unofficial term. That said, these snowy wintertime rides are absolutely magical.

East Troy Electric Railroad offers a Christmas Express Train ride that is complete with cookies and hot cocoa.

Finally, there is the Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad , which offers rides through the winter countryside, dinner trains that serve up five-course meals, and even bed-and-breakfast train rides!

Find a Christmas Tree

Christmas isn’t complete without a tree. While nearly any Christmas tree is bound to be magical, one you choose and cut yourself is especially so. Fortunately, Wisconsin has plenty of amazing Christmas tree farms to choose from . 

Whether you prefer a small, intimate farm or a bigger farm with a larger selection of trees, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for in the Badger State. Many of these farms even offer special Christmas activities such as Santa meet-and-greets and wagon rides, and many have sweet treats available for purchase.

No matter which one you choose, you’re bound to have a wonderful time!

Attend Winter Festivals

Another thing that Wisconsin has a lot of? Winter festivals. Honestly, considering the fabulous winters this state gets, this should come as no surprise. 

One of our favorite winter festivals in the state is Winterfest Lake Geneva . This event plays hosts to the US National Snow Sculpting Championship each year, something the whole family is sure to enjoy checking out. Additionally, festival attendees can enjoy s’mores, beachside bonfires, a cocoa crawl, hovercraft rides, and much more. 

Other great winter festivals in Wisconsin include Janboree in Waukesha , Winter Fest in Wausau , Winter Festival in Fish Creek , Northwoods Blizzard Blast in Conover , and WinterFEST in Bayfield.

These events present great opportunities to see cool art, listen to live music, warm up by a fire, and try yummy treats. 

See Holiday Lights

Seeing Christmas lights is a fantastic experience no matter where you happen to be during the holiday season. That said, it’s best when done in a cold environment with a cup of hot cocoa, meaning Wisconsin is one of the very best places to view a holiday lights show. Fortunately, the state has plenty of amazing displays to choose from.

Wondering why anyone would visit a place known for water parks in the middle of winter? Well, a huge number of these parks are indoors, meaning they are fun year-round. 

On top of that, the city has tons of other fun activities to offer. These include the aforementioned zipline tours, sledding and snow tubing, and of course, tours of the famous House on the Rock, which is totally worth seeing no matter what time of year you visit. 

As you can see, there are a huge number of spectacular things to do in Wisconsin in winter and believe it or not, this list is just the tip of the iceberg. Because life's too short to stay home …, near escapes in wisconsin, water parks or waterfalls here are 10 places to go for a great winter getaway..

When winter seems to be lasting forever, you just want to get away.

Of course, that's not so easy to do if you're buried in snow. Then you may have to get away a lot closer . . . maybe to the hotel around the corner.

Until then, here are some great winter getaways, each with lots to do and see.

If you're looking for the complete treatment — spas, shops, fine dining — head for one of the big resorts, such as the Osthoff in Elkhart Lake, American Club in Kohler and Grand Geneva near Lake Geneva. The bigger they are, the better the off-season deals.

Hayward / Cable . This is the cross-country skiing capital of the state, and the snowshoeing isn't bad, either.

Don't miss the American Birkebeiner if you're a serious skier, and avoid it if you're not and want a quiet weekend.

If you're with friends, stay at the Lenroot Lodge in Seeley. If you have a group, rent one of the cabins at Lakewoods Resort or Garmisch USA.

Wausau . This town in central Wisconsin has something for everybody: downhill skiing at Granite Peak, cross-country skiing at Nine Mile County Forest and snowshoeing on Rib Mountain.

In town, see cool art at the free Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and a show at the Grand Theater.

If you're a couple, stay at the Jefferson Street Inn. If you're a family, stay at the Stoney Creek Hotel in nearby Rothschild.

Hurley / Ironwood . Drink in Hurley, but cross the border for some of the best cross-country skiing in the region, at Active Backwoods Retreat and Wolverine Nordic.

At ABR, stay right on the trails in two houses or six rustic cabins.

Of course, there's also excellent alpine skiing at four hills — Whitecap near Hurley and Big Powderhorn and Snowriver Mountain near Ironwood.

Madison . There's always a lot going on in this college town, and you don't have to get off State Street. If you stay at the Concourse Hotel and Governor's Club on Capitol Square, everything is two blocks from your hotel — great theater, art, restaurants, shops and museums.

Don't miss the Winter Festival outside the Memorial Union in February or the International Festival at the Overture Center in March or early April.

Wisconsin Dells . This is where you go to get warm if you can't go to Mexico. The many indoor water parks are as close to the tropics as you can get in Wisconsin, and at Wilderness Resort's Wild WaterDome, you can even get a tan.

If you have big kids who are experienced water-park visitors, stay at the Wilderness, Kalahari or Great Wolf. If you have small kids, stay at one of the smaller and cheaper hotels with indoor water parks.

On weekends, resorts with water parks are no place for romance. If you're a couple, stay at Bowman's Oak Hill B&B and buy a day pass to a water park or go downhill skiing at nearby Cascade Mountain.

Milwaukee . See a game at the Fiserv Forum, tour breweries and the Harley Davidson Museum, shop in the Third Ward and visit world-class museums.

If you like nightlife, stay downtown at the Saint Kate Arts Hotel, which is connected to the ornate Pabst Theater and the modern Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

The Wisconsin Center District is a few blocks farther and includes the Miller High Life Theater, the UWM Panther Arena and the Wisconsin Center.

If you're a motorcycling couple, stay at the Iron Horse Hotel. If you like Irish music and food, stay at the County Clare.

If you're bringing the kids, stay at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center, which is close to the Public Museum. If you like traditional luxury, stay at the Pfister.

Ice caves of the Apostles . Walk over Lake Superior to see the magnificent mainland caves at Mawikwe Bay (or, more likely, along the cliffs above the caves). Stay at the Foc's'le Inn or Siskiwit Bay Lodge in Cornucopia.

There are also a lot of places to ski on the peninsula and more luxurious/romantic places to stay in Bayfield .

Superior . This Lake Superior town has to live in Duluth's shadow, but it has a lot to offer.

Ski in Superior Municipal Forest, visit the Bong Veterans Historical Center, tour Fairlawn Mansion and eat burgers at the Anchor Bar, which is an official dive now that it's been featured on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives."

Just to the east, ski the Afterhours Trail in Brule River State Forest and visit the frozen waterfalls of Amnicon Falls State Park.

Stay at one of dozens of Airbnb homes (or in Duluth).

Eagle River . This is the snowmobiling capital of the state, but there are also many great places to cross-country ski and snowshoe in surrounding Nicolet National Forest. There are good shops in town, too.

Hudson . This is a good destination for a traditional couple's getaway. See a play, concert or art show at Phipps Center for the Arts. Ski or snowshoe in Willow River State Park. Shop and eat in the many fine stores and restaurants downtown.

Nights in Wisconsin cities have become hotter. The cost is beyond just loss of sleep.

No one ever thought of Wisconsin as being in the tropics, but a new report says our cities are experiencing more uncomfortably hot "tropical nights," raising the risk of a cascade of consequences from a loss of sleep.

Climate Central , a nonprofit organization that reports on climate science, found that countries around the world are seeing a growing number of nights during which the temperature does not fall below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. That's above what medical experts say is the optimal range of temperatures for getting a good night's sleep.

The stakes are high — prolonged sleeplessness can cause brain fog, worsen anxiety and depression, and even increase risk of heart attack and stroke. Experts say this is one more example of the effects of human-caused climate change, and that vulnerable populations will feel them disproportionately.

"Those of us who have the means, we can cool our nighttime environment," said Dr. Lisa Cottrell, a clinical health psychologist in Milwaukee who specializes in sleep issues. Cottrell is a member of Healthy Climate Wisconsin , a group of health professionals advocating for climate action. "Those of us who don't have the means to do that, there isn't anything they can do."

The Climate Central analysis compared real-life nighttime temperatures over the last decade to a model estimating the nighttime temperatures that would have occurred absent the effects of climate change. The difference between those two numbers is what they deemed the number of additional hot nights due to climate change.

In Wisconsin:

Appleton experienced an average of 16 more uncomfortably hot nights per year in the last decade.

Madison, Kenosha and La Crosse experienced an average of 14 more hot nights.

Green Bay experienced an average of 12 more hot nights.

Milwaukee, Eau Claire and Racine experienced an average of 11 more hot nights.

Extreme heat interrupts the body's sleep cues

Intuitively, it's easy to picture why a hot night could become a sleepless one. It's hard to get comfortable enough to doze off. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a "comfortably cool" room temperature of about 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit to produce good sleep.

Our bodies actually rely on the temperature lowering to tell our brains that it's time to go to sleep, said Dr. Anne Getzin, a family medicine physician in Milwaukee and member of Healthy Climate Wisconsin. If the night is too warm, Getzin said, the brain won't receive the signal that makes way for good-quality sleep. In addition, if the body has to continue working overnight to cool itself down, it won't have time for rest and recovery.

That's in part why hot nights can pose more of a concern than hot days, which tend to make headlines with soaring temps and sunlight beating down, said Climate Central meteorologist Lauren Casey. If the day is hot and people can't get relief from that at night, it can cause a number of physical and mental health problems.

Even in the short term, not getting good quality sleep puts a considerable amount of physical stress on the body, Getzin said. Besides increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke, it can weaken the immune system, making it easier to get sick.

That's on top of things like heat stroke, heat exhaustion and injury to the kidneys from dehydration that happen during heatwaves.

Mentally, "it's the basic stuff" that a lack of sleep impairs, Cottrell said — short-term memory, problem-solving ability, emotional regulation and other mental functions. People's ability to handle daily stressors declines, she said, and those who have anxiety and depression are likely to see their symptoms worsen.

Hot, sleepless nights aren't experienced equally

Historically cooler states like Wisconsin are already uniquely vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat, Getzin said, because our bodies aren't accustomed to higher temperatures and many of our buildings don't have air conditioning.

She pointed to a paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research that suggests that without adaptation measures to account for a hotter world, the Midwest and Great Plains are projected to see the largest impacts to mortality due to their current lack of preparedness for extreme heat.

Like many cities, Milwaukee experiences a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect, where an abundance of manmade surfaces like parking lots, sidewalks and streets absorb and hold onto heat. That can produce temperatures several degrees hotter than the temperature forecast in certain parts of the city during heat waves, another Climate Central analysis found last year. Punishing heat also tends to affect communities of color more due to historic redlining policies that pushed those residents into more industrial areas with less tree canopy cover.

Without addressing the root causes of climate change by limiting the burning of fossil fuels and switching to cleaner forms of energy, Cottrell said, "it is the most vulnerable people who are going to suffer" from hot, sleepless nights.

Wisconsin tourism is having a big moment. But what goes into calculating economic impact?

It’s not a stretch to say Wisconsin tourism is having a moment.

Season 21 of “Top Chef,” which just finished airing, gave viewers a glimpse of Wisconsin’s traditions. Business boomed at Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in Spring Green after it was featured in an episode.

In a few weeks, the Republican National Convention will blanket Milwaukee, bringing thousands of delegates, politicians, staff and media who will spend money on entertainment, hotels and restaurants .

And don’t forget about next April, when an estimated 240,000 visitors will come to Green Bay and surrounding cities for the NFL Draft. An economic impact of $94 million is the early projection . 

That boom isn’t lost on Wisconsin politicians, especially Democratic Gov. Tony Evers, who has frequently hyped up a “record-breaking year” for tourism in posts on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. 

“Wisconsin saw another record-breaking year for tourism, with a historic $25 billion economic impact in 2023,” Evers posted June 11, 2024. “That blows 2022's record year out of the water.”

On June 22, 2024, Evers also called out “Wisconsin's record-breaking year for tourism” and credited outdoor recreation opportunities. 

PolitiFact Wisconsin was interested in these numbers, because there’s no doubt tourism will continue to be a hot topic in Wisconsin in the months ahead.

$25 billion is clearly a large number, but what goes into the formula to generate that economic impact? Is it spread throughout the state, or only in cities? And how does it compare to past years?

In short, is Evers right that it’s record-breaking?

Let’s take a look. 

Outside report calculates visitor spending and other variables to reach $25 billion number

The $25 billion number Evers is referring to comes from the Tourism Economics Report , which is available on the Wisconsin Department of Tourism website.

The report was created by Tourism Economics — a company of global advisory firm Oxford Economics — not the state itself. 

The methodology explains the firm used a model to trace the “flow of visitor-related expenditures through the state’s economy and their effects on employment, wages, and taxes.” 

Visitors were considered people who stayed overnight on a trip or traveled more than 50 miles to a destination. Multiple data sources were used, such as from surveys and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at how they calculated the $25 billion total impact. 

A large portion of that number — $15.7 billion — comes from direct visitor spending on things like lodging, food and beverage, retail, entertainment and transportation. 

Then there’s about $4.6 billion in what’s called supply-chain effects, such as needing to purchase more from food wholesalers and utilities. 

Finally, there’s $4.7 billion in “induced impacts” — which refers to wages that are generated directly or indirectly by visitor spending and spent in the local economy. 

That gives a picture of what goes into the $25 billion: It’s more than just the raw amount that visitors are spending in Wisconsin. 

Is that impact equally felt in the state?

The tourism department said all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties saw an increase in their total economic impact number from 2022 to 2023. A spreadsheet of county-level data confirms that. 

The top five counties with the highest economic impact, in millions, were Milwaukee, Dane, Sauk, Waukesha and Brown. 

Interestingly, popular tourism destination Door County ranked eighth at $620 million, far below Milwaukee’s $4.17 billion . 

The counties with the lowest economic impact from tourism were Menominee, Florence, Pepin, Forest and Lafayette. Those ranged from $6 million to $29 million in impacts. 

The counties that saw the highest growth in their total economic impact from 2022 to 2023 were Monroe, Menominee, and Green Lake. They saw increases from 10 to 11 percent each. 

Bottom line: All counties experienced growth in 2023, though some counties clearly benefit more from tourism than others.

Records often set each year, with COVID-19 pandemic as an exception 

Let’s go back to the part of Evers’ claim about 2023 being a “record-breaking year.” 

The tourism department has said the $25 billion last year broke a record, surpassing the previous record of $23.7 billion set in 2022. That increase is above the rate of inflation , too.

There’s a history of setting a new tourism record every year, at least under normal circumstances.

In 2017, the economic impact was about $20.6 billion, then $21.6 billion in 2018, the Oshkosh Northwestern reported . In 2019, the economic impact was $22.2 billion, according to a WPR story .

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, the economic impact dropped significantly to around $17.3 billion, then increased 21% to $20.9 billion in 2021, according to the department . 

Clearly, the tourism industry has been rebounding from COVID-19. The report says that “key indicators point to the normalization of Wisconsin’s visitor activity in 2023.” 

But some of those indicators haven’t quite caught up to pre-pandemic levels. Those include employment directly supported by visitor activity, and local and state tax revenues. 

Still, previous reports show that 2023 was a record-setting year for tourism. That economic impact number appears to steadily rise and set new records each year, with the onset of COVID-19 as an exception. 

And it certainly won’t be a surprise if Wisconsin sets another record in 2024, when the effects of “Top Chef” and the RNC are accounted for.

Our ruling 

Evers claimed Wisconsin had a “record-breaking year” for tourism in 2023.

The $25 billion total economic impact did set a record in 2023. Setting a new record each year is common, though COVID-19 caused a dip that the state has largely recovered from. 

To be sure, that impact isn’t felt equally in all communities in Wisconsin — some counties benefit far more from tourism than others — though all counties saw at least some increase in their totals from 2022 to 2023. 

And don't be surprised if the state Department of Tourism announces another huge increase in 2024.

How to keep your Wisconsin home cool in the summer, whether or not you have AC

Rainy weather this week has been a welcome break for many Wisconsinites from last week’s blistering heat waves. But with nearly three months of summer ahead, sweltering days are likely still on the horizon ­— especially with weather services predicting that temperatures may soar 3 to 4 degrees higher than average in Wisconsin this summer.

During the winter, most states, including Wisconsin, require landlords to keep units heated to a certain temperature. But only a handful of states and cities have similar requirements for cooling in the summer.

In Wisconsin, landlords do not have to provide air conditioning, but they do have to maintain and fix the AC if the rental unit includes one.

Whether you have an AC or don’t, here’s how the navigate the summer heat ahead.

How to set your AC during extreme heat

As of 2020, nearly 90% of households in the U.S. have air conditioning equipment, including 92% of households in Wisconsin, according to the Energy Information Administration .

For residents that have central air, the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program recommends setting ACs to 78 degrees during extreme heat to allow for both comfort and energy efficiency.

But most people opt to keep their homes at much cooler temperatures in the summer, including Wisconsinites. A national 2021 Consumer Reports survey found most people set their ACs somewhere between 68 and 75 degrees in the summer.

A recent poll of more than 1,200 Wisconsinites found that over a third of respondents prefer to keep their ACs set between 73 and 75 degrees. About 22% of respondents like to keep their homes even cooler, opting to set their ACs between 71 and 72 degrees.

Though it may be preferable to keep your home chilly through the summer, the Department of Energy recommends keeping the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures smaller to cut energy costs. People can save up to 10% annually on heating and cooling bills by turning their thermostat back by seven to 10 degrees for eight hours a day, according to the Department of Energy.

Using other, non-AC cooling methods throughout your home can also help to keep central air use – and energy bills – low.

How to cool your home without an air conditioning unit

Though most U.S. households have some form of air conditioning, many people are still braving the summer without central air — especially renters. According to a 2020 Energy Information Administration survey , apartments were the least likely type of housing to use AC equipment. Households that did not use AC equipment were more likely to be renters than owners.

If you’re one of the 10% nationwide going the summer with AC, you can still take several key steps to keep cool and stay safe, according to the Department of Energy.

Allow for natural ventilation: Opening windows and screened doors can be a quick, low-cost way to cool down your space. This strategy works best when you can cross ventilate an area: open doors and windows opposite to one another, so the wind can enter through one way and exit another, creating natural air flow through the room.

Add fans: Placing fans throughout your home are also a quick, easy-to-set-up way to increase air flow. Ceiling fans can be great longer-term solution, but portable floor and table fans are also efficient and often cheaper.

Block heat from your windows: The Department of Energy recommends adding window coverings to block heat coming in through your windows, while still allowing in light and air. Shades, blinds, screens, drapes, curtains and shutters can all be effective to this end.

Plan ahead with landscaping: If you have yard space and are interested in planning ahead for future years, Department of Energy also recommends using landscaping to shade your home in the summer. Experts recommend planning deciduous trees — which shed their leaves in the winter — in south-facing areas of the home to both block heat in the summer and let it in on colder winter days.

The dnr's annual winter severity index found all 72 wisconsin counties had mild winters in 2023-24, the first time in the history of the assessment. the dnr developed the wsi in the 1970s..

The Wisconsin winter of 2023-24 will be remembered for its lack of snow and ice.

Snowmobilers largely kept their machines in storage. Organizers of the 2024 American Birkebeiner nordic ski race were forced to hold the event on a 10-kilometer loop over mostly machine-made snow. The ice went out at a record early date on the Wolf River.

Recently-released data from the Department of Natural Resources add further confirmation to last winter's historical nature.

The agency's winter severity index found the winter of 2023-24 wasn't severe at all. In fact, all 72 counties were rated as "mild" and the average WSI in northern Wisconsin was a record-low value of 10.

"(Last winter) was pretty remarkable," said Dan Storm, DNR research ecologist who compiles the annual index. "The values we recorded, especially in the north, were just unheard of."

The DNR uses snow and temperature readings from dozens of sites to form the winter severity index, or WSI.

The gauge was established primarily to help assess the impact of winter conditions on Wisconsin's white-tailed deer herd, especially in the northern part of the state. Deer elsewhere in Wisconsin are rarely affected by winter.

Each site accumulates one point each day the temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or colder and one point each day the snow is 18 inches or deeper. The data are recorded Dec. 1 through April 30.

At the end of the season, if the points total less than 50, it's considered a mild winter; 50 to 79, moderate; 80 to 99, severe; more than 100, very severe. 

The DNR recently updated the index for the five months of data collection last winter.

The WSI for northern Wisconsin averaged 10, lowest on record in the 64-year data set.

The previous low was 14 in the winter of 1986-87.

In recent years, 2022-23 was a moderate 69 and 2021-22 was 55.

The winter of 2013-14 was the most severe on record with an average WSI of 143 at northern sites.

However it's important to note conditions vary even within a county. For example even though the winter of 2022-23 was rated as moderate across northern Wisconsin some areas experienced above average losses of deer to starvation and predation.

March and April are especially critical to survival of deer. If severe conditions persist into spring, the animals, with resources depleted over the preceding months, have greater difficulty recovering and die-offs mount. If in a weakened state, deer are also more susceptible to predators.

But last winter severe conditions never developed.

Not only was last winter's average WSI lowest on record, but the uniformity of values across the state was unprecedented, Storm said.

For example the highest values seen in 2023-24 were 12 in the northern counties of Oneida and Vilas but nearly matched by values of 11 in the southwestern counties of Richland and Vernon.

And the WSI values in Richland and Vernon were actually higher than the northern counties of Barron, Bayfield, Burnett, Florence, Lincoln, Price and Rusk.

The main points, however, are these: No spot in the state had severe conditions for wildlife last winter. And when it comes to deer in Wisconsin, winter 2023-24 was as favorable for survival as ever recorded in the state.

The deer herd was helped this spring, too, with an early "green up," or appearance of new growth valuable as food for deer and other wildlife.

Storm said the DNR is looking at tweaking its assessment of winter impacts on deer, including less focus on temperature and more on snow depth and length of winter conditions.

Sawyer County musky study planned

In recognition of declines in muskellunge populations in many Wisconsin waters, the DNR is planning a study of interactions between muskies and northern pike in the Spider Lake chain in Sawyer County.

The chain historically had a naturally reproducing musky population and did not have northern pike. However in 2002 northerns were detected in the waters, according to DNR surveys. The DNR plans to implant tracking devices in muskies and northerns and study interactions between the species "over time and space," said DNR fisheries director Justine Hasz.

The work will be supported in part by donations. On Wednesday the DNR accepted a $100,000 donation from the Duke and Lisa Uihlein Family Foundation to help fund the study. Hasz said additional funds to assist the work, including a $50,000 donation, will be announced in the near future.
