One of the best things about the Nintendo Switch is that it’s so portable.

But can you take a Switch on a plane? And what do you need to know about flying with a Switch?

Let’s find out.

Nintendo Switch TSA Rules

The Transportation Security Administration runs the airport security checkpoint. They screen every bag before boarding to look for prohibited items.

While they mention full size games consoles on their website they don’t specifically mention any rules about traveling with a Nintendo Switch.

I checked Twitter to get a definitive answer and a passenger called Rod had already asked:

Handheld gaming systems like the Nintendo Switch are allowed in both carry-on & checked bags.

But the best place to pack a nintendo switch is in carry-on bags. Valuables that are packed in checked luggage can potentially be lost, damaged, or stolen.

Some airlines allow you to bring two types of hand luggage. The carry-on bag and the personal item bag .

You can pack your Switch in either of those bags. Or, in fact, if you have a carrying case for your Switch that carrying case could be your personal item rather than say a handbag or purse.

Budget airlines like Spirit or Frontier usually only allow passengers to bring one bag. That means your Switch needs to be packed inside your suitcase when boarding the flight and walking past the airline staff at the boarding gate.

But you’ll need to take it out of your bag at security screening.

Taking A Nintendo Switch Through Airport Security

You will be asked to remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone from your carry-on bag and place them into a bin with nothing placed on or under them for X-ray screening.

The Nintendo Switch is considered “larger than a cell phone” by the TSA. 

That means your Nintendo Switch needs to be removed from any bag or carrying case and placed in a separate bin at the TSA security checkpoint. 

This is so that your Switch will not obstruct the view of your luggage taken by the x-ray machine.

You don’t need to remove controllers or chargers from your bag at the security checkpoint, only the Switch console itself.

Be careful not to lose your Switch at this point. Some travelers forget to put their Switch back into their luggage after going through security.

Can You Play Your Nintendo Switch On A Plane?

You can use your switch on a plane but you need to activate flight mode.

That means that you won’t be able to play online games or to buy any new games.

Switching on flight mode means that cellular data is disabled and also bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

It’s only cellular data that needs to be disabled during the flight.

So if you want to connect to in-flight Wi-Fi during your flight your are permitted to do so.

You just need to go back into the flight mode settings and turn WiFi back on.

Connecting to inflight Wi-Fi will get you back online but don’t expect the service to be stable enough for low latency gaming.

Similarly you are allowed to re-enable Bluetooth after you have turned airplane mode on.

You’ll need to do that if you want to use your joy-con controllers in tabletop mode since they need Bluetooth to work.

Likewise, you can use Bluetooth headphones on a plane , so if you want to use them with your Switch you’ll need to re-enable Bluetooth.

Noise cancelling headphones might make your experience on the flight more enjoyable.

You might not be able to charge your Switch during the flight. You could bring a usb c cable and with luck your might have an outlet on your plane seat but it will charge slowly. 

So it’s best to bring a power bank on on the plane with you especially if you are taking a long flight.

Flying Internationally With A Nintendo Switch

Keep in mind that if you are flying internationally with a Switch the airport security rules of your departure country will apply.

They are likely to be similar to the TSA rules but if in doubt check the local information.

The Bottom Line

Portable devices like Nintendo Switches are allowed on planes, but when using them flight mode must be enabled.

Lastly, remember not to leave your Switch behind on the plane!

Lots of passengers put their Switch into a seat pocket on the plane and forget to take it with them when leaving.

Yes, you can use a Nintendo Switch on a plane. But there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

Your Switch must be in airplane mode before you board the plane.

Airplane mode – Nintendo calls it Flight Mode – blocks all incoming calls and blocks you from connecting to Wi-Fi networks. It also prevents you from connecting to Bluetooth or using GPS. Cell phone and WiFi signals can interfere with airplane GPS and other navigation equipment. So, they require that you put all portable devices into airplane mode before boarding.

Most airlines will allow you to connect to the WiFi once you reach cruising altitude. But, just in case, be sure to run any updates on your Switch before leaving your home.

You can’t use tabletop mode in airplane mode.

There are two main modes on the Nintendo Switch: handheld mode and tabletop mode. Handheld mode, as the name suggests, means you hold the Switch in your hands while playing, much like you would when using a cell phone or iPad.

Tabletop mode involves setting your Switch on a stand and removing the JoyCon controllers on the sides. Then you use these controllers while your Nintendo Switch is on the stand.

But, tabletop mode only works when you have a WiFi connection; you can’t use the JoyCon controllers wirelessly.

Traveling with a Nintendo Switch is a big part of its appeal. These tips will help you power up, get through airport security, and keep your Switch safe.

Travel Accessories

You shouldn’t need a lot of accessories to use the Switch on the road or a plane. Carrying cases and headphones are a must. The rest depends on your trip length and needs.

Switch Carrying Case

For travel, I recommend a carrying case with an upper accessory pocket that closes. The bottom half will carry the Switch and games. The upper half can carry your most used items. I prefer to only have my Switch case in my plane seat.

• Has a larger upper accessory pocket. It is deeper and can hold the Switch’s AC adapter.

Headphones/Earbuds

Cars and planes are noisy. And you want to be a good neighbor. What you have already should work with the Switch. It depends on the connector your headphones/earbuds use.

• Perfect, if old school. Plugs right into the Switch.
• Less common, but again plug-n-play.
• You may not be able to use the Switch’s kickstand depend on the cable.

• Requires a USB-C to USB-A adapter .
• You will not be able to use the Switch’s kickstand.

Wireless, USB Dongle

• Requires a  3.5mm Bluetooth transmitter .
• Pair your Bluetooth headphones with the transmitter. Then plug the transmitter into the headphone port.
• May experience audio lag, depending on transmitter and headphones.
• There are also USB-C to Bluetooth transmitters hitting the market. These promise less audio lag. They are new so check reviews before you buy.

Charging Stands

A charging stand is needed if you want to play in tabletop mode and connect something to the USB-C port on the bottom. That includes USB headphones and power banks.

• Doesn’t fold, but is small.
• Offers a single USB-C port on the side.
• Nintendo licensed.
• Raises Switch, making USB-C port accessible.
• Folds down for easy packing.

A power bank is useful for longer trips. The Switch’s battery can last for 3-7 hours, depending on the game. A power bank can extend that up to 13+ hours, and works well in the car or on a plane. It’ll also recharge your phone and other small devices.

Anker PowerCore 10000 with Nintendo Switch.

If you already have a USB-A power bank that may be enough for your needs. Check its power output specs, usually printed on it. If it lists 5V/1.5A (or more amps) then it can work with the Switch.

Get a USB-C to USB-A cable . They usually cost $7-10. Get one that lists having a 56k Ohm resistor. That prevents a known overdraw issue between USB-C devices and USB-A power sources . The cable included with the Pro Controller or Joy-Con Charging Grip would work.

For best results plug the power bank in as soon as you start playing. At 100% my Anker PowerCore 10000 powered my Switch running Super Mario Odyssey. It lasted for 4.5 hours and the Switch only dropped to 98%. When plugged in at 50% the same test lasted 4.25 hours, and the Switch lost 11% charge. That was a total loss of 35 minutes of playtime.

When buying new get a USB-C or USB-C PD power bank. They are a better value and future proof as USB-C becomes more common. You can get a 10,000mAh USB-C PD power bank for the same cost as an Anker PowerCore 10000.

FAA Rules for Lithium Batteries On Flights

In the United States, FAA rules  govern what kind and size batteries you can bring on a commercial flight.

• Any device with a lithium battery (phone, laptop, Switch, power bank) must be in your carry on bag. Do not put them in checked luggage. Do not gate check a bag without first removing them.
• You may carry any number of power banks up to 100Wh (27,027mAh) each. The Switch and most power banks are within these limits.
• American , Delta , Southwest , and United all allow you to carry up to two 160Wh (~42,000mAh) batteries. For other airlines, you’ll need to check their policy.
• If flying overseas contact your airline to check on the lithium battery limits for all flights. If they give you a limit in watt-hours (Wh) use this converter to find that in milliamp-hours (mAh). Use 3.6 for the voltage.

Airport Security

TSA officers will begin to ask travelers to remove electronics larger than a cell phone from their carry-on bags and place them in a bin with nothing on top or below, similar to how laptops have been screened for years. This simple step helps TSA officers obtain a clearer X-ray image.

In July 2017 the TSA updated their screening procedures . All electronics larger than a smartphone need to go into a bin, not stay in your bag. This includes the Nintendo Switch and larger power banks.

• Put your Switch in a bin between your stuff (your bag and another bin to either side of it).
• Don’t go through the X-ray/scanner yourself until you see your stuff go into the X-ray machine.
• On the other side collect the Switch and put it back in your bag. Make sure you close the bag.
• TSA-Pre members won’t need to remove anything from their bags.

Airport security is commonplace for a Switch to get lost. Give yourself time at the airport for security. Rushing to catch your flight can cause you to forget something. Keep an eye on your stuff the best you can and make sure your bag is secure before you leave.

In-Flight Power

Some flights offer in-seat power options. With the right one, you can skip the power bank and keep your Switch charged the entire flight. Check your options before you pack and know the difference between the options.

Taking the Dock

The dock is the least travel-friendly part of the Switch. If you have a case that holds the dock, and room in your luggage for that case, then use that. Otherwise, consider packing your dock in with your clothes. Put a sock or two into the empty slot. Then surround it with clothing on all sides.

The official Nintendo Switch AC Adapter is great for the Switch. But it isn’t the best design for packing and it doesn’t work well with all other USB-C devices. Most USB-C PD wall chargers that offer 45W output will also power the Switch’s dock. Many are smaller, cheaper, fold up, and support more USB-C devices. The charger needs to offer 15V/2.6A (or more amps). See the USB-C charger list . Any rated as Superb will work with the dock. Or roll up the built-in cable of the official charger and toss the official charger in your bag.

You can use a thinner HDMI cable than the one Nintendo includes. Make sure it supports HDMI 1.2 or better.

Some hotels block the HDMI ports on their TVs. This is to incentivize you to use their entertainment services. It also cuts down on the amount of streaming video their Wi-Fi has to handle. It sucks but is a growing trend. Call ahead and ask if the HDMI ports on their TVs are accessible or not. Be sure to call your hotel’s number, not a national 1-800 number. Worst case you’ll know the dock can stay at home. And remember the person answering the phone didn’t make the decision.

Loss Prevention

During the height of holiday travel in 2017, there were a lot of reports of lost Nintendo Switches. Most happened in planes, airports, and hotels.

• Before you leave home record your Switch’s serial number. In the event, it does get lost that will be of help. Keep it online so you can access it anywhere. For example, email it to yourself.
• Make sure to secure your Switch once through airport security.
• Don’t leave it out at the gate unless playing. If charging from an outlet sit with it until done.
• On planes, it is most often left behind in the seat pocket. Put it in your bag or case when done. Those seat pockets are nasty , best to avoid them altogether.
• Before checking out of your hotel check the furniture, drawers, bathroom, and closet. Verify you have the Switch before leaving.

Preparing to board

Before you even get to the plane there are two steps which should be completed first.

At home: Prepare your Nintendo Switch for travel. There will most likely not be any Wi-Fi provided on board the airplane and if there is, it is unlikely that it will have sufficient bandwidth to be able to download any games or play online. So, if there is anything specific that you'd like to play while flying, ensure that you have completely downloaded these games before you fly.

At the airport: Ensure your Nintendo Switch makes it past airport security unscathed. I have been told by numerous airport security staff that the Nintendo Switch looks quite suspicious on the x-ray scanner screen, so treat it like a tablet and take it out of its case if you have one.

How to play your Nintendo Switch on a plane

Attaching joy-cons.

• Once you have boarded and are sitting comfortably in your seat, take out your Nintendo Switch.
• Position it at an angle which is comfortable for you. I suggest using a Tablet Stand for best results.

• Detach your Joy-Cons by pressing gently down on the circular release button on the top rear side of each Joy-Con. Slide them up slowly from the Nintendo Switch console.
• Attach the Joy-Con straps by sliding them down on the flat side of the detached Joy-Cons. Slip the straps around your wrist to secure them.

Syncing Joy-Cons

• If your controllers are already paired, then you need only press the same button three times on each controller to ready them for use.
• If you are attaching a new controller or one you don't use that often, press the Home button on the bottom of the right Joy-Con.
• Select the Controllers option which has a Joy-Con icon. Then select the Change Grip and Order option.
• Hold down the sync button on the controller which you are trying to pair. After a few seconds, it should appear and be ready to use.
• Alternatively new Joy-Cons can be paired simply by sliding them onto your Nintendo Switch directly.

Setting up your battery pack

With the Joy-cons paired, you are almost ready to play. To keep playing on those long flights, you have to be able to manage your battery power. The last thing you want is your Switch to die mid-flight. Here's how to keep you playing longer.

• Take out your battery pack and plug in your USB-C to USB-A cable .
• Plug the USB-A end into the battery pack and then the USB-C end into your Nintendo Switch stand.
• The battery pack and a good part of the cable can then easily be stowed away in the pouch on the back of the seat in front of you.
• Don't worry if you are flying at night. The Nintendo Switch screen is powerful enough to handle this but if you need to adjust the brightness. This can be changed in the System Settings menu. To get there, press the Home button on the right Joy-Con.
• On the main menu, look for the icon that looks like the sun. Select the option Screen Brightness and adjust the settings.

Depending on the games played, the Nintendo Switch battery will last anywhere between 3-6 hours. In my experience, running a game which pushes the Nintendo Switch can deplete the battery more quickly. For example, if you are playing something such as Xenoblade Chronicles X or Zelda: Breath of the Wild then these games will drain your battery by approximately 30% every hour. However, if you are playing something a bit less intensive such as N++ or Hotline Miami, then the battery will last a lot longer.

However, you will need to remove any electronic devices like laptops , tablets , phones and Nintendo Switches from your bag at the security checkpoint for an extra security check.

The Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) regulates airport security; they screen passengers’ luggage to make sure that the airplane is safe and no dangerous items are brought on board.

The @AskTSA team gave her the green light, but she will be required to remove the Nintendo Switch along with any electronic devices larger than a cell phone and place them in a separate bin for X-ray screening

As you know things don’t always go as planned, and there’s no guarantee that your checked bag will arrive on time, so don’t take the risk of losing your Switch.

The best way to travel with a switch is to use a durable carrying case bag with special pockets so it can take all your switch accessories and games.

Also before you head to the airport check that your device is fully charged even if you know that your airplane will have power outlets.

Some airplanes have power outlets , you can use SeatGuru to know if your seat has a powder outlet, or bring a power bank with you.

Can You Use Your Nintendo Switch On a Flight?

Yes, of course you can enjoy and play with your Nintendo on your flight.

Just turn on airplane mode on your Nintendo switch, here is how to do it:

• Press and hold the HOME Button for at least one second to access Quick Settings.
• From the Quick Settings screen, select Airplane Mode, then press A to activate it. To deactivate it, press A again.

You can turn on Bluetooth while you are in airplane mode to use the controllers, you can read more on the Nintendo website .

Can You Charge Your Nintendo Switch On a Plane?

Most switches can be charged using a USB cable, you can just plug the USB cable in the outlet and plug the other part of the cable in your Nintendo Switch and voila.

As mentioned above, if the airline you are flying does not have the possibility to charge your device, you can take a power bank.

It is really helpful to always keep a power bank on your bag because most of the common ones are FAA approved.

Even if you don’t need it in your flight you will need it to charge your phone, iPad, computer or any other device anytime.

Always make sure you do not forget to take your or your son’s Nintendo Switch with you when you disembark from the airplane. TIP

When traveling abroad the rules of your destination country will apply.

There are no strict rules on Switches as they are safe and easy to scan, just ensure to take out your switch for your bag or inform the security officer that you have one inside your bag.

The good news is that you absolutely can bring your Nintendo Switch on your next flight! Here are also a few tips and considerations to keep in mind so you can get through security without a hitch and level up your in-flight gaming experience.

Can you put a Nintendo Switch in checked luggage? Yes. But just because you can, here are a few reasons why you shouldn’t:

• Battery Concerns – the Nintendo Switch uses a lithium-ion battery, which is considered hazardous material per the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While extremely rare, lithium batteries can overheat or expand to cause a fire in the cabin which is why the FAA recommends packing it in carry-on baggage. If you do decide to pack your Nintendo Switch in checked luggage, make sure to completely power it off to protect it from unintentional activation. Also, all spare (uninstalled) batteries for your Switch must be placed in your carry-on. 
• Protection – items in your checked bags are more likely to get damaged or stolen. If you choose to check-in your Switch, buy a protective case and pack it carefully so it doesn’t move or get squashed. If you’re worried about your bags getting lost or stolen, consider buying an Airtag and place it inside your suitcase.

The best place to pack your Nintendo Switch is in a carry-on bag. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when traveling with your Switch in your carry-on, especially when you go through security:

• Get a separate case for your Switch  – You will need to place your Nintendo Switch in a separate bin when you go through security. To make this process easier, put your Switch in a protective case and pack it somewhere that’s easily accessible in your carry-on bag. Once you get to security, you can take out just the case. Most airports will allow you to keep your Switch inside the case but this is dependent on the person screening items as they go through the X-ray screening. 
• Write down your Switch serial number somewhere safe ahead of time – I’ve traveled with my Switch many times so this has never happened to me but it is possible for your Switch to get stolen in the process of security screening (this happened to someone on Reddit a few years ago). For the best chance of getting your Switch back: 1. Enable parental controls to block anyone from using your Switch without the passcode 2. Write down (or take a picture) of your Switch serial number so you can track it down in case it gets resold 3. File a complaint

100%, you absolutely can play games on your Switch on a plane! To do so, you will need to put your Switch on airplane mode which turns off all wireless communication such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Make sure to buy and download offline games ahead of time since Flight Mode blocks online features that otherwise would allow you to buy, download, and play online games.

To turn on Airplane mode:

• Go to System Settings
• Select Flight Mode from the left menu
• Press “A” to activate/deactivate

💡 Re-Enable Bluetooth: Go to System Settings > Flight Mode > Controller Connection (Bluetooth). This will allow you to connect your bluetooth headphones and pair your Joy-Con controllers if they weren’t attached to your Switch prior to activating Flight Mode. 

Best Nintendo Switch Accessories for the Plane

The most important accessory for your Nintendo Switch is a carrying case. Ideally, you’ll want one with an upper accessory pocket and a bottom flap where you put your game cartridges. I bought mine from Target several years ago but this one on Amazon is almost identical.

💡 Consolidate your cables when possible. All of my personal devices use a USB-C cable, including my laptop. If there are power outlets available on the plane, I’ll use my laptop charger to charge my Switch so it charges faster.

A power bank is always at the top of my travel essentials packing list. This is my favorite because it allows me to charge multiple devices (including the Switch) multiple times.

If you know you’re going to play a game that’s hard to play in handheld mode for long periods of time, then I’d recommend bringing your joy-con grip that comes with your Switch. This will allow you to set your Switch up in tabletop mode without risking losing one of your joy-con controllers or having to bring a separate pro controller.

Switch Accessories to Leave at Home

• Nintendo Switch Charging Stand – if you want to be able to charge your Switch and play in tabletop mode at the same time, then you may want to purchase a portable charging stand . I would only recommend bringing this if you plan on playing on your Switch throughout the entire flight. Otherwise, you can charge your Switch whenever you take a break to eat, watch a movie, or sleep.
• Pro Controller – I don’t personally think a pro controller is worth the bulk and hassle unless you find playing with the joy-con controllers unbearable. If you do decide to bring a pro controller in your carry-on, know that it has a lithium-ion battery and so you may need to place it separately during security checks.
• Nintendo Switch Dock – since you won’t be able to set up a docked Switch on your flight, only pack it if you need it at your destination. I’d recommend stuffing something in between the dock to prevent it from getting squished and wrap it in some clothes for added cushioning.  

Best Games to Play on the Airplane on the Nintendo Switch

Any game that you enjoy qualifies as a great game for you to play during your flight.

However, there are some Switch games that are equally enjoyable and also:

• Engaging enough to play for hours on end
• Episodic so you can play in spurts & 
• Available offline while your Switch is in Flight Mode. 

Below, you’ll find a list of highly recommended Switch games that are especially great for longer trips, including my personal favorites that I always bring with me whenever I fly with my Switch:

I love cozy games and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is my favorite of them all. The main storyline is that you move to a deserted island and complete tasks to transform it into a paradise. It’s a calm and casual game with infinite possibilities that makes it perfect for unwinding and passing the time during your flight.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch compatible version of the fan favorite racing game. On the rare occasions I get tired of fishing or decorating my island, I’ll play Mario Kart and race a few times while trying to shave seconds off of my best times.

Super Smash Brothers is another one of my favorite Switch games. I only play in story mode whenever I fly  so I still have hundreds of bosses I need to beat before I finish the game. Similar to Mario Kart, I love that each boss battle is self-contained so I can play in spurts.

If you’re looking to play through and beat a storyline, I’d recommend Super Mario Odyssey where you can help Mario rescue Princess Peach (yet again). The animation is absolutely gorgeous and the platformer has more of an open world feel compared to other Mario games.

Disclaimer: I love Super Mario Odyssey but I can’t play it because it activates my motion sickness (even when I’m on the ground). If you’re thinking about bringing this game on your next flight, I’d recommend trying it out first to see how it makes you feel.

Super Mario Party is the perfect game to bring if you’re traveling with friends. You can face-off each other in mini games in your quest to collect the most stars, or play collaboratively against the bots.

Another great open-world game to play on your next flight is Breath of the Wild . As Link, you can explore the world of Hyrule, solve puzzles, and battle enemies as you uncover the mysteries of the world around you. Best of all, there are plenty of save points so you can pause and continue as you please.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a whimsical, strategy game where the Mario world meets quirky rabbit-like creatures to solve puzzles and battle enemies. It’s entertaining, tactical, and turn-based, making it easy to pause and pick up again.

Yes, the Nintendo Switch uses a lithium-ion battery which is why it’s recommended to bring it with you as a carry-on item. If you do decide to put your Switch in a checked bag, make sure it is completely powered off.

The perfect nintendo switch travel set up and recommended accessories.

I've had a Nintendo Switch since launch day and let me tell you, it's joyful. Joyous. It's a little joy device. I love 4k Xboxen and raw power as much as the next Jane or Joe Gamer, but the Switch just keeps pumping out happy games. Indie games, Metroidvania games like Axiom Verge , Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (worth the cost of the system) and now, super Mario Odyssey . Even Doom and Wolfenstein 2 are coming to the Switch soon!

I've travelled already with my Switch all over. Here's what I've come up with for my travels - and my at-home Switch Experience. I owe and use these items personally - and I vouch for their awesomeness and utility.

BlueTooth Adapter

This TaoTronics BlueTooth adapter fixes the most obvious problem with the Switch - no blueooth headset support. If there is ever a Switch 1.5 release, you can bet they'll add Bluetooth. This device is great for a few reasons. It's small, it has its own rechargeable battery, it charges with micro USB, and it supports both transmit and receive. That's an added bonus in that it lets you turn any speakers with a 1/8" headphone jack into a BT speaker. Again, tiny and fits in my Switch case. I pair my Airpods with this device by putting the Airpods into pairing mode by putting the case button, then holding down the pairing button on this adapter, which promiscuously pairs. Works great.

Switch Travellers Case

I have a Zelda version of this case . It's very roomy and I can fit a 3rd party stand, a dozen cartridges, BT adapter, headphones, screen wipes, and more inside. There's a number of options and styles past the link, including character cases.

Switch Joy-Con Gel Covers

These gel-covers - or ones like them - are essential. The Switch Joy-Cons are great for children's hands, but for normal/larger-sized people they are lacking something. It's not the cover, it's the extra depth these gel covers give you. I can't use the Switch without them.

HORI Compact Playstand

This is an airplane must. I want to use my Pro Controller one a plane - or at least detached Joy-Cons - so ideally I want to have the Switch stand on its own. The Switch does have its own kickstand, but honestly, it's flimsy. Works when the world isn't moving, but the angle is wrong and it tips over easily on a plane. This playstand folds flat, fits in the case above, and is very adjustable. It also works great to hold your phone or small tablet for watching movies, so it ends up playing double duty. Plus, it's $12.

Switch Grip Kit

This one is optional UNLESS you have little kids and Mario Kart. When you're using Switch Joy-Cons as individual controllers, again, they are small. These turn them into tiny Xbox-style controllers. They are plastic holsters, but the kids love them.

HDMI Type C USB Hub Adapter for Switch

This can replace your not-portable Switch Dock. I didn't believe it would work but it's great. I can also fit this tiny Dongle in my Switch Case, and along with an HDMI cable and existing Switch power adapter I can plug the Switch into any hotel TV with HDMI. It's an amazing thing to be able to game in a hotel on a long business trip with minimal stuff to carry.

BASSTOP Portable Switch Dock

Another docking option that requires some assembly and disassembly on your part is this Portable Dock. It's not the dock, it's just the plastic shell. You'll need to take apart your existing giant dock and discover it's all air. The internals of the official dock then fit inside this one.

It can be frustrating in parts when it comes to anticipating jumps and timing things correctly, but overall Yoshi's Crafted World is just so damn cute that it's easy to overlook all that. Ugh, I'd do anything for that little dino.

'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild'

The land of Hyrule may be fictional, but a long-haul flight or even a just a lazy day is the perfect opportunity to explore the breathtaking world contained in Breath of the Wild. This is a very immersive game (trust me, I've put in over 120 hours and am nowhere near close to completing it), but losing yourself as you traverse these ancient lands is the perfect way to keep your mind occupied and absolutely enthralled.

If you've never played a Zelda game before and feel as though you won't enjoy it, I was a complete newbie when I picked this game up, and now I can't get enough of it.

'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'

I'll be the first to admit that when I first picked up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate , it was daunting AF. There are so many button combinations that you need to learn for each character (there's currently 74 fighters available, with more to be added), but learning all of this and the mechanics of the game is actually enjoyable and quite satisfying.

Once you've got the hang of it, watching the CPU (the character being controlled by the game's AI) fly off-screen after you've dealt your final smash can be downright hilarious. The same goes for multiplayer, but just make sure that no disagreements ensue — remember, it's just a game.

'Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee'

Out of all the games on this list, Pokémon Let's Go is the one that relies on the Switch's motion control the most. Being able to throw a Poké ball physically is pretty much the major selling point of this game (with or without the Poké Ball Plus ), but even in handheld mode there's still some physicality to capturing Pokémon — you just move the entire console instead thanks to the built-in gyro controls.

Of course, you can still play the game in tabletop mode thanks to the Switch's kickstand, but you may run the risk of damaging your console. So it's probably best to stick with handheld for this one.

'Super Mario Party'

As the title suggests, Super Mario Party is designed to be a multi-player game. Up to four people can play at one time, but this game is perfect if you and your BFF want to pass some time together. Similar to Let's Go , you'll have to play in tabletop mode for two people to use the joy-cons, but as long as you're aware of your surroundings and the possibility of turbulence, you'll be good to go.

Just make sure that you keep your competitiveness to a minimum though. Like Smash , Super Mario Party is known to fracture friendships, so be wary.

If you're in the mood for something a little more challenging on your travels, then you'll be pleased to know that Microsoft struck up a deal with Nintendo and now the critically-acclaimed Cuphead is available on the Switch. This game is notorious for being one of the hardest video games on the market right now , but the 1930s-inspired art design and the overall aesthetic is something you cannot miss.

While Cuphead may be difficult, I honestly spend half the time just marvelling at the animation rather than actually playing the game — it's that entrancing at points.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

While you're guaranteed to have a blast playing Mario Kart 8 with friends, it's also the perfect game to fully master on your own terms to achieve the coveted Golden Mario set . Gaming through your holiday travels: a guide

I don’t know about you, but I’m a bit of an anxious flyer. There’s something about being on a plane that makes it impossible for me to get comfortable. I think it might have to do with being in such close proximity to strangers, especially right now. That can make it a bit difficult to get through the five-hour flight I’ve had to take to get home the past few years since I moved to the West Coast. Thankfully, gaming has been the one thing that seems to help during my holiday travels.

Of all the things I’ve tried to bring onto a plane to keep me busy, games seem to be the only thing I can have with me that helps me relax a little. I think it’s because games are such an active activity, I usually get so involved with what I’m playing that I completely forget I’m on a plane at all.

So, in an attempt to help any other travelers who get a bit nervous during their journey, here’s my guide to the types of games to play when you’re traveling. Oh, and I travel with my Nintendo Switch , so you’re going to need one of those if you want to follow along.

Alright so you’re gonna wanna go ahead and start with your favorite simulator game. I find these are great for the ride to the airport, waiting in line for TSA, waiting at the gate, and waiting for takeoff once you’ve boarded. They’re obviously some of the most relaxing games you can play, which is going to help you deal with all the stress of getting through the airport. 

Animal Crossing is a great one as you can use this time to get all your daily chores done, but Stardew Valley is also a solid go-to for me here because it divides up time into nice, digestible chunks. You need to wait an hour? Nah, that’s only four days in Stardew time. Plus, the slow-paced nature of this game means that you can easily look up from your console as needed without risk of dying or loss of progress.

Other good simulator games to try are My Time at Portia, Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, Spiritfarer, and Farming Simulator .

If you’re someone who needs a little more action in your life, turn-based games are a great way to go. Like simulators, they’re easy to have going when you’re multitasking, because they kind of pause themselves every few seconds while waiting for you to do your button input, whether it’s making your turn or simply pressing A to progress the dialogue. These are great for any of the lead up to your trip, plus the first half of your flight when you’re waiting to be interrupted by the drink cart. 

My favorite turn-based or otherwise visual-novel-esque games to travel with are Ace Attorney and Slay the Spire . Ace Attorney has the benefit of its episode structures, because I can make it through one during the five-hour flight it takes to get back to the East Coast. Slay the Spire is such a fun game and it’s honestly slept on — it’s a deck-builder roguelike that’s perfect to play in short bursts.

Other great turn-based or visual-novel-style games to try are Pokemon (duh), Octopath Traveler , Fire Emblem, Paper Mario: The Origami King , and pretty much any of the famous JRPGs.

Okay, this one will come in clutch for any of my other anxious flyers out there — download an open-world game you know you love. You’re gonna start playing, and soon you’re going to be so consumed with what you’re doing that you totally forget about your holiday travels. Anything with real-time action will be your best friend, because it forces you to focus more on what you’re doing.

My personal go-to is Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , because no matter where I jump into a save file, I can immediately have fun with it. It’s become something of a comfort game on planes for me, honestly. I’ve also considered trying out shooters that I know I enjoy like the BioShock series, because the storytelling and gameplay are so involved, I think it would have the same effect. More than genre, what’s key here is to find a game that you feel sucked into.

Other immersive games to play while traveling are Minecraft, The Witcher 3, Monster Hunter, Assassin’s Creed, and Xenoblade Chronicles.

If all else fails, that’s alright, we just need to bring out the big guns. If I’m really having a hard time on the plane, I put on whatever game has the twitchiest controls I can find. I want fast-paced, real-time gameplay that requires dodging, strategy, timed jumps, and so on. These types of mechanics not only require all of my attention, but my active brainpower, so I really have no other choice than to focus on the game over my anxiety.

The one catch with this one is that you usually need to bring a Switch Pro Controller along, set up the screen on the tray table, and play that way. It actually works pretty well, if you don’t mind the extra bit of hassle. Hades is hands down my go-to for this, and has gotten me through those last few exhausting hours of the flight pretty nicely.

Other twitchy games to try are Hollow Knight , Celeste , Cuphead , Super Smash Bros. , and really any other fighting game that you might enjoy.

Man, typing this all out really makes me feel crazy, but this is really the process I go through playing games during my travels. If nothing else, I hope that this could help someone else as they navigate one of the most stressful times of the year. And of course, feel free to give these a try if you’re just at home needing an escape from your family this Christmas. I have a feeling I’m going to this year. Good luck out there, gamers.

I was planning to sell my Switch, but Nintendo just changed my mind

I was ready to get rid of my handheld; yet now I’m finally excited about the Switch again

Though underpowered and with an online store stuffed full of shovelware, I still think the Nintendo Switch is one of the best consoles of all time. Launching all the way back in March 2017, the handheld hybrid has shown remarkable longevity. 

I think it’s the best console on the market for both kids and time-poor adults, thanks to the pick-up-and-play philosophy baked into the design of the hardware. What's more, the Nintendo Switch Pro controller is probably my current favorite gamepad. Yet, as much as I admire the success the Switch has garnered, I came super close to selling mine recently. 

I’ve owned the Nintendo Switch OLED since the day that it launched back in late 2021, and while I think that upgraded screen is fabulous, the reality is I’ve just not played it all that much over the past 3.5 years.

I played the hell out of the brilliant Metroid Dread when it launched alongside the OLED model, I’ve dipped back into Mark Kart 8 Deluxe every now and then, I completed the excellent Switch port of Alien: Isolation , sank over 50 hours into the remarkable The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , and maybe about 10 into Super Mario Wonder . But that’s it. For context, I’ve put more time into Elden Ring than every one of those games combined. And that’s before the new Shadow of the Erdtree DLC dropped.

The fact Steam Deck OLED is so damn good hasn’t helped my poor, dust-covered Switch. Valve’s handheld PC is remarkable, and you can amass an excellent library of games for not much money, thanks to regular Steam sales. That business strategy stands in sharp contrast to Nintendo’s approach of rarely dropping the price of its first-party titles, which can cost as much as $70.

Having barely touched Nintendo’s handheld this year, I came seriously close to selling it a few weeks ago. But you know what? It’s now a decision I'm glad I didn’t go through with.

Direct and to the point

Enter last week’s latest Nintendo Direct . For me, that’s perhaps the best showcase Nintendo has put on in years. Packed full of actual in-game footage — which is always welcome in an age of gaming where far too many titles still make their debuts with trailers that are 100% pre-rendered — the iconic Kyoto-based company teased a bunch of new games I’m legitimately excited to play.

Chief among them is obviously the newly retitled Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. This was the first actual gameplay we’ve seen of Samus’ long-awaited sequel, which was first announced at E3 2017, mere months after the Switch's launch. The fast paced Spare Pirate-blasting action looks very similar to last year’s brilliant Metroid Prime Remastered , which is in no shape a negative. 

I’ve adored the Prime series ever since the original Gamecube entry. The chance to step back into the mighty metallic shoes of Aran is reason alone for me to keep my Switch OLED.

But Beyond was far from the only game that got my blood pumping from the Direct. As a big fan of 2019’s Link’s Awakening , I was thrilled by the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which is due for release on September 26. Another welcome return to the top-down gameplay of old, it’s a Zelda title that actually lets you play (brace yourself) as Princess Zelda, and not elfen icon Link.

Outside of spin-off Hyrule Warriors, this is really the only time Nintendo fans have been given the chance to play as the character, which is a big deal. And no, I’m not counting those three games that launched on the ancient CD-i. God, I’m old. Anyway, Echoes of Wisdom looks really promising, with Zelda’s long range staff-based combat and a seemingly greater focus on puzzles than Link’s Awakening making this feel like a fresh spin on the iconic franchise.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is another first-party game due out before the end of the year — it’s currently penciled in for October 7 — and it looks like an eye-catching entry in a series I’ve always had a lot of time for. Personally, I’m a big fan of the new cel-shaded art style, and I think Brothership is going to look superb on my Switch OLED’s incredible screen.

New Horizons 

Another couple of titles I’m planning to pick up? Lego Horizon Adventures and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. Despite the former being co-developed by Guerrilla Games Studio Gobo, it looks like it sticks to the formula that have made so many of the Traveller’s Tales Lego games a hoot to play down the years. And how wild is it to see a PlayStation IP pop up on a Nintendo system?! 

As for the return of Nintendo’s lovable ape, I can’t wait to replay a high-def version of a challenging platformer I first fell in love with back on the Wii. Admittedly, I'm a sucker when it comes to buying remastered Nintendo games I’ve already played through on a previous console generation, and Donkey’s HD port will almost certainly get my money. 

There is one elephant in the room, though, and sadly I’m not talking about the Dumbo-shaped version of Mario we got in Wonder. The Nintendo Switch 2 is officially coming , with The Big N confirming it will be revealed by April 2025.

With Nintendo’s track record of re-realising games, every title I just talked about may also come to the Switch’s successor (the name of the machine hasn’t actually been confirmed yet). Considering Metroid Prime 4 is slated for a 2025 release, I’d be absolutely astonished if that wasn’t a Switch 2 launch game.

Currently, I’m not planning to buy Nintendo’s upcoming console, mainly because it's been heavily rumored that it will have an LCD screen rather than an OLED panel, which is a big downgrade in my book. If Nintendo goes the hybrid route again, I could play games in Docked mode on my LG OLED G3 , sure. Yet seeing as almost exclusively played the best Switch games in Handheld mode, I’d rather wait until the Nintendo Switch 2 OLED becomes a thing.

For the time being, I’m just glad Nintendo has finally given me a reason to dust off its little console, which is something I really wasn’t expecting again given that we’re so far into the Switch’s lifecycle. Well played, Nintendo.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure Comes to Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC in 2025

N ext year, Sanrio's lovable cast of characters will move beyond your iPhones and iPads. Hello Kitty Island Adventure, the cozy community vibes game that debuted in July 2023 on Apple Arcade, is finally expanding in 2025 to Nintendo Switch, and PC as a timed exclusive before coming to the PS4 and PS5. 

Notably absent is the Xbox. But even releasing the game beyond Apple Arcade is a welcome change for Sanrio fans outside Apple's ecosystem. Hello Kitty Island Adventure is the kind of chill, low-stakes experience roaming around a serene isle doing fun tasks that dovetails well with Sanrio's lovable cast. 

Fans have kept playing the game, with over 40,000 people in its official discord, said Chelsea Howe, chief product officer at Sunblink. She credits the characters and the game's uniqueness -- letting you create your own Sanrio-styled character, adventure in dynamically different areas, decorate your home, craft and create -- with its popularity.

"I think we always get initial surprise [at the game.] If it is a Sanrio fan, they've never seen a game like this," said Howe. "They've never seen an opportunity where they can really get to know the characters and connect with the characters, experience the backstories of characters." 

But Sunblink has also kept fans happy with regular content expansions. Hello Kitty Island Adventure launched with over 30 hours of content for players, and studio Sunblink has kept fans engaged by adding content on a regular cadence -- updates every three weeks, new features in a big update every six weeks -- that's grown the game to around 80 hours now. 

At first blush, Hello Kitty Island Adventure looks a lot like the cozy game king that preceded it, Animal Crossing New Horizons. The games have a similar island setting and community vibes. But Hello Kitty Island Adventure has distinguishing elements that surprise fans, Howe says, like its open world aspect. There are biomes and island features like ruins to explore, which contain underground puzzle and logic rooms. And instead of paying down a debt to a sketchy racoon landlord, the main mechanic is leveling up your friendships with the Hello Kitty herself, Chococat, Cinnamoroll and other Sanrio characters.

"It was really important for us to intentionally merge the open world aspects with the cozy life sim aspects and continue to walk that line in spite of the Animal Crossing comparisons," Howe said.

Another way it's different than Animal Crossing New Horizons: You shouldn't tweak your console's clock to trick your game into thinking it's earlier or later, which fans called "time traveling."

"Don't do it. You did it in Animal Crossing. Don't do it in this game," laughs Howe. That's not a promise of punishment -- if you time travel, you'll miss out on real-time events, potentially locking you out of new content. Yes, the same content that Sunblink adds every few weeks. 

That includes in-game events linked to holidays, like Valentine's Day, which all players will experience at the same time. Now that the game is coming to other platforms beyond Apple devices, Sunblink faces the extra challenge to update multiple platforms at once. It'll do this by rolling out the Apple Arcade version updates on the same cadence while bundling several in bigger updates for consoles and PC.

Howe says Sunblink listens to its fans and has added features or made tweaks based on what they've suggested. Sometimes this has meant introducing features that are similar to those in Animal Crossing, and other times it's removing offending features. For instance, the game has no inventory caps: "That was the number one thing that was a huge frustration for me personally in Animal Crossing and for a lot for others," Howe said. 

Another added feature is the TikTok-friendly capacity to edit your character's home cabin on the island. If friends are watching, they can send emoji and give other live feedback while you're decorating. "If one of your high level motivations is self-expression, and if you want it to be a social experience, the more you can enable collaborative self-expression the better," Howe said.

All of this non-combative, friendship and nurture-focused play is coming to consoles and PC for an undisclosed price, but Sunblink has carried over another feature from Apple Arcade: no microtransactions. Instead, there's a mix of free and paid updates, which Sunblink believes will resonate better with the fan base. "It's definitely all about making sure that it feels like it's worth the value that you're providing," Howe said. 

Cozy game fans will have another option when Hello Kitty Island Adventure comes to multiple platforms next year, and Howe emphasized that players will dictate how long the game keeps going.

"We see this as the start, not the end. This is a live game. We've got at least two years of roadmap ahead of us," Howe said. "As long as people are enjoying it and loving it and playing it, we intend to keep on maintaining it."
