Though we loved our stay in the chic and historic Angolo del Poeta , those looking for a luxurious experience will soon fall in love with the Relais San Lorenzo .

Bergamo City Travel Guide: Hidden gem of Lombardy, Northern Italy. Here are the best things to do in Bergamo, churches, hikes, eateries, history and local tradition.

If you’re wondering whether or not to add Bergamo to your Italy travel itinerary, then the answer should be a resounding ‘yes’. Medieval architecture, local cuisine, and an authentic Italian town a little off the beaten path, Bergamo is a stunning destination in Northern Italy.

Characterised by its Venetian Walls, cobbled lanes, and welcoming ambience, there are plenty of reasons to visit Bergamo. Of all the reasons to visit Bergamo, make it the fact that you’ll be visiting a place which many miss.

With regular budget flights touching down in Bergamo’s airport on a daily basis, many assume that Bergamo is the kind of place you fly into, and then leave directly.

However, this is most certainly not the case and avoiding this Italian town would be your first mistake! Instead, ensure to dedicate at least a night or two to discover the best attractions Bergamo has to offer.

After all, it’s not every day of your Northern Italian trip that you’ll discover a city that’s relatively underrated in comparison with its nearby neighbours, such as Milan and Lake Como, yet remains a destination which retains all the charm of a unique holiday experience.

While you could simply stop off in Bergamo, we advise a longer stay to really allow yourself to get a feel for the place. Looking for one of the best-kept secrets of Italy ?

The stunning city is perfect for a weekend break- or perhaps a longer stint- for those looking to go a little off the tourist track and discover something new.

After all, the city has plenty of accommodation options to suit every budget, including this luxurious place to stay and this historic B&B we stayed at for an absolute steal!

Otherwise, you should know that visiting Bergamo couldn’t be easier thanks to a wealth of affordable train links to the rest of Italy and beyond.

Bergamo is even served by its own international airport offering flights to the UK, France, the Netherlands, and plenty of other European destinations.

The time to get from the airport to the city centre is just under half an hour by bus and costs just a few euros each way, making the city easily accessible even on the shortest of vacations.

5 Incredible reasons to visit Bergamo, an incredibly underrated city in Northern Italy close to Milan. Some of the best things to do and why you should visit medieval Bergamo!

20+ Best Things to do in Bergamo

Lying in the shadows of the Basilica di Santa Maria, this stunning and incredibly ancient 11th-century chapel is hidden in plain sight, to the extent that most simply pass it by, never even realising that it exists (even the locals who live in Bergamo!) .

Easily one of the best-kept secrets and hidden gems of Bergamo, the stone structure leans to one side and is truly a glimpse of Bergamo history. The octagonally shaped Tempietto di Santa Croce is small and filled with murals dating all the way back to the middle ages.

Though the interior of the ecclesiastical building is often closed to the public and only open at select times throughout the year, it can still be enjoyed from the outside!

Tempietto di Santa Croce: Hidden Germ of Bergamo

The ‘broletto’ is located next to the Basilica di Santa Maria and was built on the site of the old Roman forum. Open to the public and free to visit, the Old Bishop’s Palace is covered in ancient murals and old paintings and is often empty.

This means that you’ll most likely be able to admire this masterpiece free from the distraction of others. Wander around its dark depths and emerge on the other side to enjoy the delights of the Piazza Vecchia.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Old Bishop's Palace

Tell me: have you ever dined in a former prison? Well, neither had I until I headed to Bergamo. Stroll down a small pedestrianised path away from the old town centre and you’ll end up in front of a vintage wooden door.

This is the beginning of your ultimate dining experience at Il Circolino . Outside, the sound of music drifts into the alleyway and the smell of fresh pizza lingers in the air.

Head inside for some authentic Italian cuisine and plenty of local wine! We particularly loved the fragrant risotto, well-priced wine list, and mouthwatering desserts.

Il Circolino: Dining in an Old Prison in the Heart of Bergamo, Italy: entrance

Bergamo was once home to two cathedrals, though only one survives to this day. You’ll find the sole surviving cathedral in the very centre of the old city (elevated town), just next to Piazza Vecchia.

Part of the Roman Catholic church, this ecclesiastical building is often overlooked by its more sumptuous counterpart, that of the basilica Santa Maria. The cathedral is free to visit and is open on a daily basis between 7 AM and 7 PM.

Dedicated to Saint Alexander of Bergamo (whose remains are now housed in an urn on the cathedral’s grand altar) , it’s the seat of the city’s current bishop and was constructed in the 15th-century.

Wander inside, and you’ll see intricate decor, beautiful frescoes, and the tiara of Pope John XXIII, who is now known as Saint John XXIII.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: duomo di bergamo

Ornately designed and even more intricate to its interior, the chapel of Colleoni is a breathtaking mausoleum dedicated to Mark, Bartholomew, and John the Baptist.

Built in the 15th-century, this church is one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture you could hope to find anywhere in Northern Italy, let alone in Bergamo! Please note that as much of the collection is in private hands, photography is not allowed inside the chapel.

However, this should definitely not put you off visiting as the Cappella is a true feast for the eyes… After all, this number of beautiful carvings and oeuvres d’art are best experienced without the distraction of modern technology.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Cappella Colleoni

Housed in the 12th century former Palace (what cultural space isn’t when it comes to Italy?) , a museum was established in 1906 to celebrate the life, works and collections of Donizetti, the iconic Italian composer.

Enter inside to explore the exhibitions, admire the interior of an old palace and be amazed by the sheer volume of frescoes, paintings and courtyards located within the museum’s walls.

Like many smaller Italian towns and cities, the prices of Bergamo are much less than those of major cities such as Rome and Milan. As a result, it’s often possible to enjoy coffees and other beverages at reasonable prices, even in the centre of town, right on the main square.

Granted, the prices are obviously more expensive than in other parts of town. But then again, there’s nothing quite like admiring the old town square while enjoying your first espresso of the day.

Birds, the buzz of tourist chatter, and all! For more information about coffee in Italy, here’s how to order coffee in Italy just like an Italian!

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Piazza Vecchia coffee

Bergamo is a city divided into two parts; largely owing to its status as a hillside town- in all senses of the word. The newer part of the city is the Città Bassa (lower city), which as its name would suggest, sits in a lower position on a fairly flat plateau. This area is a financial hub and is complete with plenty of open piazzas and wide boulevards.

There is not one but two funiculars to take when you head to Bergamo. This is as the city is roughly divided into two main parts, with a further sub-division once you reach High Bergamo (known in Italian as the Città Alta) .

Built in the Alpine foothills, hills are obviously abundant! Known as Bergorum during the Roman era, the Città Alta dates back thousands of years.

The oldest part of the city is divided into two further parts; the touristic centre (where you’ll find the Duomo and all the restaurants), as well as the Rocca di Bergamo area, site of an ancient fortress and now home to some breathtaking terraces and restaurants.

While in the Città Alta, make sure to enjoy a traditional Italian coffee while people-watching in the main town square, Piazza Vecchia.

Below, the newer part of the city (though also dating back at least five centuries) is known as Città Bassa (lower city). In other words, Bergamo is full of steep climbs and if you want to save time (and a fair bit of energy), you’ll want to utilise the funiculars to travel around!

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: old town walls

For the very best view in Bergamo, you simply must take the higher funicular up the side of the mountain and straight to the very top of the city where Bergamo’s stunning position in the Alpine foothills really comes into its own. Wander around the ancient walls of the Castello di San Vigilio and take in the panoramic views.

With breathtaking views of the city and beyond at the top, the funicular (or ‘mini sky train’) up to the very edge of the city is well worth the nominal fee. This view is such that it’s well worth bringing some photography equipment along to capture the moment; so don’t forget your camera!

For the very best photos of Bergamo, take the funicolare San Vigilio just before sunset to capture the Citta Alta and Citta Bassa in golden light. Some of the other best views of the lower city can be found along the Venetian walls (where you may even spot a vineyard or two if you’re lucky).

Sit and stay a while, or enjoy a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants and cafés located on the edge of the rocks. The view is best seen in the morning or at sunset when golden hour lights up the scene and an orange glow pours over the stunning city.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: funicular

Bergamo is a city of churches, and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is sandwiched between the Cappella Colleoni and Bergamo’s cathedral. Constructed from the 12th-century onwards, the church is said to have been built by men who prayed to the Virgin Mary when a plague broke out in 1100.

The men prayed that they would be kept safe from sickness, and if this were the case, then they would build a church in Mary’s honour. The men ended up surviving and true to their word, they built an enormous church in thanks for their health.

Filled with frescoes, stuccos, tapestries and wooden marquetry, this is one of the most intricately designed churches in the region and is well worth a visit, if only to stand in awe at all of the beautiful artwork on display.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Opened to the public in 1918, the Natural History Museum of Bergamo is filled with all things science related and is the perfect Bergamo activity for if you have kids in tow (or simply if it’s a rainy day). Filled with fossils, old animals and vintage scientific equipment, head here if you’re not so keen on traditional musuems, but want to still experience a little culture.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: view of Bergamo

Overlooking the entire Piazza Vecchia and in the heart of the city’s old town, one of the best things to do in Bergamo is to climb to the very top of the bell tower.

Stroll up the historical steps and be rewarded by a breathtaking view over the city and beyond. Towering at 52 metres high, the Torre Civica is the Citta Alta’s tallest tower and was built during the 12th-century.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Piazza Vecchia

Bergamo was once (and technically still is) heavily fortified, and a testament to this are the Venetian walls which are now designated as a UNESCO world heritage site.

The complete loop stretches over 6 km in length and walking along the high walls by foot is one of the very best introductions to the city you could hope to find.

Construction of the Venetian Walls first commenced in the 16th century under the Republic of Venice, for whom the walls are named. Today, the Renaissance era walls are some of the best preserved of their time still standing in the world today.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Citta Alta

At the very top of Bergamo, where the mountain touches the clouds and you can see for miles upon miles, there are the remnants of an ancient castle dating back centuries.

The Castle of Saint Vigilio dates back to a time when Bergamo was constantly at war with other city-states. Dating all the way back to the 6th century AD, the Castello is filled with fortified walls, casemates, stunning vistas, and views onto the villages beyond Bergamo.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: Castello di San Vigilio

The Venetian walls which characterise Bergamo are punctured with ornate gates every once in a while, in order that foot and road traffic may pass between the Città Alta and the Città Bassa.

Head between the two districts of Bergamo by foot, and no doubt you’ll wander through at least one or two of these ancient structures. Pictured below is the San Giacomo Gate, the old entrance to the city for those travelling to Bergamo from Milan.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: San Giacomo Gate

Of all the best things to do in Bergamo, wandering through the cobbled lanes, and soaking up the history tops the list. This Lombardy city is a place to be savoured, its atmosphere to be absorbed, and you should go where your feet take you.

After all, the best way to reveal Bergamo’s hidden gems is simply to allow the city to reveal itself to you. For a closer look at the city’s rich history, consider booking a private upper town walking tour with a guide like this one .

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: venetian walls

Bergamo has all the charm and none of the big-city prices of Milan, making it a great place to base yourself while exploring this Northern Italian region. However, if you do want to visit the Lombardy capital for yourself, then Milan is only a short train ride away, making it one of the best day trips from Bergamo.

In order to visit Milan from Bergamo, you can take the train or bus. While the bus is slightly cheaper, the train will take you right into the city centre!

Once there, you can see the Duomo di Milano, an ossuary chapel, plenty of museums and the design hub of Northern Italy for yourself. Wondering what to do in Milan? Here’s how to spend one day in Milan .

Best things to do in Milan, Italy: Duomo di Milano

Of all the  reasons to visit Lombardy , the artwork held in many of its towns and cities is definitely near the top of the list. And one of the oldest collections of all is that held in the Academia Carrara.

The collection exists thanks to the generosity of 18th-century count, Giacomo Carrara, who donated his extensive collections to the city following his death in 1796. From then on, his properties were managed by various parties before the 1950s when the Commune of Bergamo took over.

Today, the collections can be visited for a small fee and comprise of over 1800 paintings dating from the 15th to 19th centuries. Artists represented within the works include Botticelli, Bellini, and Raphael.

Best things to do in Bergamo, Lombardy, Italy: vineyard

For those looking to enjoy the city on a more local level, there is perhaps no better way to experience the culture of a place than by taking a class or exploring the destination on foot.

This private guided tour will show you all of the important Bergamo attractions such as the cathedral, the little cobbled lanes and more. Otherwise, for a taste of the best Italian food that Bergamo has to offer, book this Cooking Class with a Local Chef in Bergamo .

Pasta, pizza, and all the gelato : steps away from the touristic area of the city there’s plenty of local produce to be found in the form of patisseries and local wines.

Local Lombardy cuisine mirrors much of the rest of Northern Italy, lacking in tomatoes and focusing more on butter and meat-based dishes. The most famous local dish is the  risotto alla milanese, a rice dish flavoured with saffron.

If you’re looking to enjoy the best of Northern Italy a little off the beaten path, then there are plenty of day trips from Bergamo that are well worth the time.

Other than Milan (which is the easiest of day trips from the Medieval city) , you can rent a car and head out into the vineyards, or visit one of Northern Italy’s other major cities or towns via train;

Venice day trip from Bergamo: Long touted as one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, Venice is a must-see when travelling through the boot-shaped country. This full day tour from Bergamo includes highlights such as a boat ride on the Venice Lagoon, a guided walking tour of the city, and the chance to stroll through real life history. Verona and Sirmione day trip from Bergamo: Ah, Verona, the Italian City of Love, not to mention the place where Shakespeare’s fated lovers, Romeo and Juliet, hail from. This Bergamo excursion includes a visit to a summer retreat from the days of the Roman Empire at Sirmione, and the chance to explore Verona in depth.

Where to stay in Bergamo

If you’re looking to make the most of this Lombardy gem of a city, then I highly recommend dedicating a couple of days to explore Bergamo, rather than just staying for a single day. Unlike nearby Milan, staying in Bergamo can be quite affordable and there are plenty of options on offer:

Relais San Lorenzo,  Piazza Lorenzo Mascheroni, 9, 24129 Bergamo BG, Italy

If you’re looking for a place that’s a little more luxurious during your stay in Bergamo then the Relais San Lorenzo (which is only open during the shoulder and peak seasons of the year) is incredibly well rated. Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Lombardy hills, this 5-star hotel offers all of the facilities you could wish for from a luxury hotel.

Check prices and accommodation here.

UpTown Bed and Breakfast, Piazzetta Luigi Angelini, 15, 24129 Bergamo BG, Italy

If you want to truly experience the best of Bergamo, then I recommend staying in the heart of the Citta Alta. For our second night in the city, we opted to stay in the UpTown B&B where the room was clean and comfortable.

The room also came with a complimentary breakfast, of which there were several options to choose from. Deliciously cooked, we ended up having an amazing chat with the owner of the B&B!

Check accommodation prices here.

Angolo del Poeta, Via Borgo Palazzo, 39, 24125 Bergamo BG, Italy

If you love your accommodation with a slice of history, then I highly recommend staying in the Angolo del Poeta. Situated in the lower part of Bergamo and easy to reach from the train station, the ancient walls of this place were first built over 500 years ago. Today, the B&B offers a wonderful place to stay for a reasonable cost.

Staying in a 500 year old room in Bergamo, Italy

Nearby Milano is just under an hour away from the train and transportation between the two cities runs on an incredibly regular basis. As such, even if you don’t have much time in Northern Italy, set aside just half a day for this easy day trip from Milan and you certainly won’t regret your choice!

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) about Bergamo, Italy

Perfect! I’m visiting Bergamo next week and will definitely use your post as a guide :)

Thursday 27th of September 2018

Nice post! I appreciated the fact that you included places like tempietto di Santa Croce, which is relatively unknown (or, at least, unnoticed) also by many residents.

Living in a village in the neighborhoods of Bergamo, I still add a couple of tips; for example, Astino Abbey is in my opinion definetly worth a visit, especially for people who likes to walk in the nature: atcually, it can be reached with a very nice walk from Città Alta in about 1 hour, during which you basically go in the middle of Borgo Canale (a small neighborhood on the hill just below San Vigilio) and then from there you pass through some very nice spots in the middle of nature until you reach the Abbey.

Another very nice place to visit if you stay in Bergamo for a few days (maybe not for just a weekend but for more days) is the Iseo Lake, which is about 30 km from the town, or also Endine Lake.

If instead you are more the kind of person who lovers arts, you could build a route around some of the Romanic Churches of the province of Bergamo: Rotonda di San Tomé (located in Almenno San Bartolomeo, about 10 km from Bergamo) is one of the most famous, but, if you are more athletic, there is also the possibility to hire a bike and go from Trescore Balneario to Zandobbio and then to Spinone (which is on the Endine Lake) and visit the churches of San Vincenzo (Trescore Balneario), San Giorgio (Zandobbio) and San Pietro in Vincoli (Spinone): obviously they can be visited also by car, but they are connected with a very nice cycle path of about 37/38 km, totally immersed into the nature.

Star Trek Had A Huge Star Wars Easter Egg - But It Was Cut

Jean-Luc Picard and Luke Skywalker

"Star Trek" and "Star Wars" are two of the best sci-fi franchises out there, and they're still going strong after all these years. As such, they are often compared to each other, and debates regarding which saga is better have informed pop culture discourse for decades. That said, what if both franchises were part of the same universe and people could embrace them equally?

That's probably never going to happen, but "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tried to make it so. A "Star Wars" Easter egg appeared in Season 2's "Up the Long Ladder" episode, according to Larry Nemecek's "Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion." The moment occurs when the HMS New Zealand ship is sent to a planet called Alderaan — you know, the same planet that is destroyed by the Death Star in "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope."

The planet isn't explicitly mentioned on TNG, but it could be spotted on computer screens. Unfortunately, the reference was removed for the Blu-ray release and replaced with the planet Aldebaran, ultimately debunking any notion that both sci-fi sagas are canonically linked. Still, the thought has led to some interesting fan conversations — and there are other references to the galaxy far, far away.

There's a Star Wars Easter egg in Star Trek: DS9

It seems that sneaky "Star Wars" homages were an in-joke for some "Star Trek" creators, as Alderaan briefly reappeared in another series. In the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" Season 1 episode titled "A Man Alone," the planet crops up during the scene where Odo (René Auberjonois) checks Ibudan's (Stephen James Carver) calendar.

Meanwhile, other fans have pondered how the Federation would have reacted to the Galactic Republic's destruction of Alderaan. As Redditor  u/TheBurgareanSlapper wrote, "If Alderaan is an Imperial planet, its destruction is a clear-cut case of an internal Empire affair and none of the Federation's business. The most the Federation Council may do is send a strongly worded letter to the Imperial Ambassador. Maybe."

Sadly, high-definition Blu-ray technology has ruined the idea that both franchises are canonically intertwined. That said, "Star Wars" and "E.T." might exist in the same universe , which is also an exciting notion.

If you enjoyed this article, read about the actors who've appeared in both "Star Trek" and "Star Wars."

Fenders, rack, internal geared hub allows some shifting while stopped. Totally reliable for past 3+ years.

Original chain ring had shifting ramps which cause occasional chain drops. Replacement has totally cured that problem. Could use a better chain guard.

Very good commuter bike with unusual, but totally reliable shifting arrangement. Useful fenders and luggage rack, comfortable seat and good riding position. Used for daily 15-mile round trip commute on city streets and paths.

Good frame, saddle, derailleurs, brakes and rack. Good handling and the DualDrive setup is great for both in-town and open-road riding.

Wheelset on 2006 models has very cheap spokes and will require continual truing unless you want to rebuild them with better spokes (which I did). I'd definitely recommend upgrading to WheelSmith spokes and having a professional wheel builder do the job for you. Stock fenders are garbage: Freddy Fenders from Planet Bike et al are much better.

A great overall commuter with a comfortable saddle and good components (except the wheelset...)

Similar Products Used:

1996 Nishiki Bravo, 2002 Nishiki Bravo.

700C X 25 rims, built in rack and fenders, nice cross geometry for long distance rides, great saddle, SRAM DualDrive (yes, I love this... give it a try)

Heavy (but not that important for a touring bike) Wellgo nylon pedals (stock) are pretty poor quality. SRAM rear derailer isn't that great. Stock Chain is junk (replace ASAP) had mine snap twice in sub 0 degree weather.

I purchased this bike after my Trek 420 sport was stolen and I'm so very glad that I did. What a major upgrade. I couldn't ask for a better commuter bike in this price range. I use is it all year round and it's great in the winter. Sram DualDrive is the a great innovation for commuters that need to make frequent stops (stop lights/signs ect)

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

3 Star Trek Captains Broke The Prime Directive To Save A Planet

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak"

  • Captain Burnham breaks Prime Directive to save pre-warp planet from extinction, highlighting moral dilemmas in Starfleet.
  • Starship captains like Captain Kirk have a history of bending the rules to save civilizations, challenging Starfleets non-interventionist policy.
  • Despite facing consequences, Captain Pike and Burnham prioritize saving lives over adherence to the Prime Directive, illustrating ethical complexities.

Star Trek: Discovery 's Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is the latest starship captain to break Star Trek 's Prime Directive to save a pre-warp planet from destruction. The Prime Directive represents Starfeet's most sacred principle; noninterference with other cultures and civilizations . Each officer swears to uphold Starfleet's Prime Directive . However, many starship captains and their crews have been forced to bend the rules when it comes to the Federation's non-interventionist policy. Sometimes, a moral obligation to save lives trumps Starfleet's ethical principles of non-intervention, forcing a number of starship captains to break the Prime Directive to save an entire planet.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 2, "Ad Astra per Aspera" revealed that Captain Robert April (Adrian Holmes) broke the Prime Directive twice: once to save the Perricans from an apocalyptic meteor shower, and again to reverse the effects of an extinction-level drought on Na'rel. Some Starfleet captains, like Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) would argue that this was interfering with the natural development of those societies, while others, like habitual Prime Directive rule breaker Captain Kirk (William Shatner), would argue that Starfleet should share their advanced technology to help others. And it seems that Kirk's predecessors, and his Kelvin Timeline counterpart, would agree with him.

10 Times Star Trek Was Right To Break The Prime Directive

Captain kirk broke the prime directive to save spock and the planet nibiru, star trek into darkness (2012).

The opening of Star Trek into Darkness saw Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) break the Prime Directive to save the life of Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the entire planet of Nibiru . The Enterprise crew were on Nibiru to deploy a cold fusion device inside a volcano, which would prevent a cataclysmic eruption that would wipe out the native Nibirans. While deploying the device, Spock is left stranded inside the volcano, and the planet's strong magnetic field prevents the Enterprise from beaming him out . The only solution, therefore, is to fly the Enterprise directly above the volcano and beam Spock aboard before the device detonates.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness is a 2013 movie directed by J. J. Abrams and starring John Cho, Alice Eve, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Part of the Star Trek franchise, this sequel sees Captain Kirk relieved of his duties as commander of the USS Enterprise.

Revealing the USS Enterprise, which was hiding under the sea on Nibiru, was a blatant violation of the Prime Directive because it displayed superior technology to a pre-warp species. Star Trek Into Darkness even teased that the Nibirans would begin worshiping the USS Enterprise as a benevolent deity. Despite having been saved by his crew, an ungrateful Spock reports this Prime Directive violation to Starfleet, leading to Kirk being demoted to being the first officer of Admiral Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) aboard the Enterprise, until the admiral is killed by Khan Noonien Singh (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Captain Pike Broke The Prime Directive To Save The Planet Kiley 279

Star trek: strange new worlds season 1, episode 1, "strange new worlds".

Captain Christopher Pike broke the Prime Directive in the very first episode of his spinoff series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . In the eponymous pilot episode, the USS Enterprise was sent to Kiley 279 to investigate the disappearance of Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and the crew of the USS Archer. During their mission, it was discovered that the Kiley people had inadvertently become aware of the Battle of Control in the Star Trek: Discovery season 2 finale. The knowledge gained from this battle allowed the Kiley to reverse engineer the matter-antimatter reaction that powers most starships to instead build a devastating weapon.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

To convince the Kiley people that there was a better way, and because they had already been impacted by Federation technology, Pike revealed the USS Enterprise in an attempt to convince the planet's two warring factions to embrace peace . Pike delivered a stirring lecture about World War 3 and how it eventually led to the creation of Starfleet and the Federation. This made the desired impact on the Kiley people, who decided to work together to achieve space travel instead of working against each other. Although noble in his intentions, an enraged Starfleet hardened the Prime Directive because of Pike .

In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 4, "Among the Lotus Eaters", Captain Pike had to fix another Prime Directive violation on Rigel VII, caused when his former yeoman Zac Nguyen used leftover Federation technology to seize control of the planet.

What Happened To Star Treks Phoenix Warp Ship After First Contact?

Captain burnham broke the prime directive to save tilly and the planet halem'no, star trek: discovery, season 5, episode 6, "whistlespeak".

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt brought Captain Burnham and Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) to the pre-warp planet of Halem'no, where the USS Discovery's captain broke the Prime Directive to save her friend, and the entire planet . At the climax of Discovery season 5, episode 6 , Tilly became trapped inside a Denobulan weather tower disguised as a mountain, with a young Halem'nite called Ravah (June Laporte), as the air slowly ran out. Because the tower was built out of tritanium, the USS Discovery's sensors were scrambled, making it impossible to beam Tilly and Ravah out of the tower.

It's possible that Star Trek: Discovery 's Red Directive supercedes the Prime Directive, meaning that Burnham may face no reprisals for her violation, as it was done in the pursuit of the Progenitors' treasure.

The failing weather towers were installed by the Denobulans to generate rain on Halem'no to mitigate the effects of the planet's dust storms and its naturally arid surface. Without the towers, the Halem'nites would become extinct. Captain Burnham, therefore, makes the decision to beam into the tower's control room to reveal the truth to the Halem'nites' spiritual leader, Ohvaz (Alfredo Narciso). While it was a breach of Star Trek 's Prime Directive, Burnham saved the planet from extinction while making sure that she still respected the Halem'nites' spiritual beliefs, keeping Halem'no's natural development largely on track.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Discovery's Mary Wiseman On Tilly's Season 5 Arc & Burnham Friendship

Star trek: discovery proves starfleet academy show doesn’t make sense without tilly, star trek: discovery disappointingly avoids homeworld of enterprise’s dr. phlox.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak"

  • Lt. Sylvia Tilly's growth on away missions shows her capability and confidence as she steps out of her comfort zone in "Whistlespeak."
  • Tilly has completed 6 successful away missions on Star Trek: Discovery.
  • With support from mentors like Saru and friends like Burnham, Tilly becomes the best version of herself on Star Trek away missions.

Star Trek: Discovery 's Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) is an infrequent member of the USS Discovery's away missions, with Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6 , "Whistlespeak", marking Tilly's 6th official away mission as part of Discovery's crew. Tilly only has one away mission recorded prior to Star Trek: Discovery season 3, but that year marks a huge step forward for Tilly's character development. Captain Saru (Doug Jones) makes Ensign Tilly his Number One despite Tilly's low rank, and requests Tilly's presence on away missions that Saru believes will benefit from Tilly's personable demeanor.

Sylvia Tilly's promotion to Lieutenant in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 comes with new responsibilities, including participation in more Star Trek away missions, which Tilly is more likely to take on of her own volition. Each time Sylvia takes another bold step out of her comfort zone, Tilly gains more confidence and becomes a better Starfleet officer. Tilly's growth is noticed by the people who care for her, so her mentor, Captain Saru, and best friend, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), both continue to push for Sylvia Tilly to broaden her horizons with more away missions as Star Trek: Discovery continues.

Screen Rant interviews Mary Wiseman about Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Tilly's friendship with Burnham, and her thoughts on the series ending.

6 Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, Episode 10 - "The Red Angel"

Tilly helps prepare for the red angel's arrival.

As a cadet in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, Sylvia Tilly's scientific skills are often better suited to duties aboard the USS Discovery, but Tilly's promotion to Ensign in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 lets Sylvia see her first proper away mission. In Star Trek: Discovery season 2, episode 10, Ensign Sylvia Tilly is part of the away team that beams down to Essof IV, a planet with no breathable atmosphere, to set up the "mousetrap" designed to contain the Red Angel in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 . The bait in the mousetrap is Michael Burnham , whose survival is linked to previous appearances of the Red Angel throughout Michael's past.

To summon the Red Angel and hopefully contain it for further study, Burnham insists on putting her life in danger by intentionally being exposed to Essof IV's toxic atmosphere. Ensign Tilly is no fan of the dangerous plan but is on hand to monitor signs of the tachyon radiation that always accompanies the Red Angel's appearances. After long moments of waiting and watching Michael suffer from asphyxiation, Tilly finally reports on the tachyon spike that eventually comes right before Burnham nearly dies.

When the "mousetrap" works, Star Trek: Discovery season 2's first Red Angel is revealed to be Gabrielle Burnham (Sonja Sohn), Michael Burnham's mother, but Gabrielle didn't set the Red Angel signals.

5 Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 2 - "Far From Home"

Saru & tilly look for help on a hostile ice planet.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 3, episode 2, "Far From Home", Commander Saru (Doug Jones) chooses Sylvia Tilly as the person to join the away mission on an unknown ice planet after the USS Discovery misses the target planet of Terralysium, and instead crash-lands in the 32nd century. Discovery is badly in need of repair, and Saru believes that Tilly's natural ability to put people at ease will be an asset in trading some of Discovery's dilithium for the rubindium needed to fix Discovery's communications systems.

Saru is right, of course. When Saru and Tilly approach a single outpost in the frigid wasteland, Tilly's assertion that they're Starfleet officers makes one of the local miners, Kal (Jonathan Koensgen), curious and eager to help. Trouble comes with Zareh (Jake Weber), a conceited courier who acts outwardly hostile towards Tilly, and straight-up murders Kal for helping Saru and Tilly. The encounter indicates that the USS Discovery crew is definitely not in the 23rd century anymore , and Tilly is going to have to adjust to Star Trek: Discovery season 3's time jump.

4 Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 1 - "Kobayashi Maru"

Tilly leads the away team to help deep space repair beta six.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 1, "Kobayashi Maru", Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly undergoes her own version of the famous Starfleet Academy no-win scenario test , but this time, the Kobayashi Maru is for real. A distress call from the space station Deep Space Repair Beta Six, experiencing the effects of a gravitational anomaly, alerts the crew of the USS Discovery, and Lt. Tilly leads the away mission to help fix the station's thrusters, with Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) in tow.

After the station collides with debris pulled in by the gravitational distortion, the theoretically simple repair job turns into an evacuation, complete with broken transporters and a dearth of escape pods leading to a nerve-wracking countdown. Tilly manages to focus on the situation despite her own nerves, and steps up to take charge, sending shaken station personnel back to the USS Discovery, while Tilly, Tal, and station commander Nalas (Rodrigo Fernandez-Stol) wait for rescue. Tilly's tenacious refusal to abandon the station as the clock ticks down is a catalyst for a change of plans and, after returning to the USS Discovery following the harrowing experience, Tilly starts to rethink her life choices in Star Trek 's 32nd century.

3 Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 3 - "Choose to Live"

Tilly and burnham help the qowat milat track down a romulan murderer.

Lt. Sylvia Tilly's growing uncertainty about the direction of her new life prompts Captain Saru to suggest Tilly as a companion for Captain Michael Burnham's away mission in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 3, "Choose to Live", a joint venture with the Romulan Qowat Milat , after a Starfleet officer is murdered by a Qowat Milat nun named J'Vini (Ayesha Mansur Gonsalves). Tilly's way out of her comfort zone, but Michael and the two Qowat Milat sisters -- one of whom is Michael's mother, Gabrielle Burnham (Sonja Sohn) -- are skilled enough to carry the weight of any combat they may face in bringing J'Vini to justice.

The Qowat Milat, first introduced in Star Trek: Picard , are a sect of Romulan warrior nuns who dedicate their lives to lost causes. Star Trek: Discovery season 3 reveals that Gabrielle Burnham joined the Qowat Milat after the Red Angel suit tied Gabrielle to the 32nd century.

Lt. Tilly helps piece together that the moon that J'Vini flees to is actually a spaceship housing the last remnants of the Abronians, a dormant species that J'Vini swore to ferry to their ultimate destination before reawakening. J'Vini's story of finding the Abronians and dedicating her blade to their lost cause shakes something loose in Tilly's ennui , as Tilly considers how her own new path might be similar to J'Vini's, as a deviation from the tracks that they'd each been on.

The cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has yet to be announced, but Mary Wiseman's Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly should definitely be a part of it.

2 Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 4 - "All Is Possible"

Tilly trains starfleet cadets on a snowy moon.

Exploring new directions for her life, Lt. Sylvia Tilly volunteers to train a squad of Starfleet Academy cadets, but the routine planetary survey mission turns into a trial by fire. Growing up in Star Trek: Discovery 's post-Burn galaxy means the cadets already don't get along, thanks to the vast social chasms spread wide among all of them. Val Sasha (Amanda Arcuri) has never met a non-human, and Harral (Seamus Patterson), an Orion, and Taahz Gorev (Adrian Walters), a Tellarite, are outright hostile towards one another. That alone would be a difficult challenge for a new teacher, but a gamma ray burst knocks the shuttle off course, sending the Starfleet Academy team spiraling into a crash landing.

Tilly's 23rd century approach of cooperation through communication and empathy works.

It's up to Lt. Tilly to keep the fledging crew of cadets calm in the face of almost certain danger, and help them work together if they're going to make it out alive, because this is not the mission that any of them -- including Sylvia Tilly -- prepared for. Tilly's 23rd century approach of cooperation through communication and empathy works, and pierces through the 32nd century walls that Harral and Gorev have put up, and encourages Sasha to speak up. The disaster turns out to be a breakthrough, and Tilly decides that she wants to be a teacher at Starfleet Academy, setting up the possibility of Sylvia Tilly being in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy .

1 Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 6 - "Whistlespeak"

Tilly races to save the pre-warp planet halem'no.

Captain Burnham selects Lt. Sylvia Tilly as an away team partner to retrieve the next clue in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's treasure hunt, which is likely to be found in a weather tower constructed centuries earlier by the Denobulan scientist Hitoroshi Kreel. The tower brings rain to Halem'no, a dry planet that's home to a pre-warp society, so the local Halem'nites revere the station as a holy temple that can only be entered by the winners of a traditional race. The solution, then, is simple: enter the race and win.

Tilly has been uncertain about the impact she's had on her Starfleet Academy students, but this test of endurance is well within Lt. Tilly's abilities. Thanks to Sylvia's kindness, both Lt. Tilly and Ravah (June Laporte), a Halem'nite youth, win entry to the temple and the honor of being sacrificed to Halem'no's gods. (Wait, what?) While Burnham kicks down Star Trek 's Prime Directive to save Tilly (and all of Halem'no), Sylvia's compassion towards Ravah keeps them going through what they believe is their last moments, and Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 6, "Whistlespeak", serves to remind Tilly that she does belong at Starfleet Academy, despite the doubts she's been having.

Lt. Sylvia Tilly's participation in the away missions on Star Trek: Discovery has only increased as Discovery goes on, and the 6 missions that Tilly has gone on so far have each contributed to Tilly's overall character arc. By taking steps off of the USS Discovery, Tilly breaks out of her comfort zone and realizes that she's capable of more than she originally believed. Each mission helps Tilly come closer to her ultimate goal of teaching at Starfleet Academy in a slow, realistic way that keeps Tilly relatable and true to character, as Tilly becomes the best version of herself on Star Trek: Discovery away missions.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 streams Thursdays on Paramount+.
