My husband and I are avid cyclists and our 25th anniversary was this year. We had always wanted to do a road bike tour. The weather in Oregon was perfect and none of the roads had heavy traffic. It really was the ideal place to ride.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your Oregon cycling tour, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Redmond Municipal Airport - Roberts Field (RDM) in Redmond, Oregon. Once you have arrived in Redmond, there are several options for getting to your pre-trip accommodations. If you wish to schedule a shuttle prior to arrival we recommend reaching out to Enviro Shuttle ( www.enviroshuttle.net or 541-598-5384). Alternatively, you may call a taxi from the airport upon arrival for your transportation. Bend, where your trip begins, is located about 30 minutes south of the Redmond Airport. If you need a place to leave your personal vehicle for the week, you may valet your vehicle with the bellman at the Oxford for $32/day. Or alternatively, there is a public parking deck behind The Oxford Hotel which has a rate of $10 per day.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at The Oxford Hotel (10 NW Minnesota Ave, Bend) at 8:00 AM on the first day of the trip. Please have your first day's cycling clothes and gear easily accessible, separate from your luggage (you will have the opportunity to change into your cycling clothes upon arrival to the lunch location). A two and a half hour shuttle will take you to your first destination deep in the Cascades—Crater Lake National Park. After lunch with the group, you will receive a personal bike fit to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride. Afterward, your guides will present information on safety and equipment usage along with an overview of the day’s ride. Then you’ll set out for a ride along Crater Lake’s dramatic rim.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Crater Lake Lodge (866-292-6720), and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. There are no scheduled shuttle services offering direct access to Crater Lake, and while you may be able to hire a taxi or shuttle service, please be warned that the cost involved may be significant. We strongly recommend that you arrive the night before to ensure you do not miss our Trek Travel shuttle.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at 11:00 AM at FivePine Lodge. You will then shuttle 30 minutes to Redmond, arriving around 11:30 AM to the Redmond Airport. Please allow adequate connection time for flights or other travel to accommodate possible traffic delays. If you wish to return to downtown Bend to retrieve your personal vehicle or extend your stay in the area, your guides can drop you off at The Oxford Hotel following the airport drop. It is about 30 minutes from the Redmond Airport to The Oxford Hotel in downtown Bend.

After a scenic two and half hour shuttle into Crater Lake National Park, you'll be welcomed with a delicious lunch provided by your guides. After a brief orientation, safety talk, and getting comfortably fit to your Trek bike, you’ll saddle up to begin the day’s ride along the rim road that overlooks the lake’s breathtaking blue water. The lake is one of the deepest in the world and was formed about 7,700 years ago when a volcano twice as high as the current rim erupted. Experts estimate that the blast that created the lake was around 42 times more powerful than the Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980. A wealth of viewpoints tempt you along the route, as you take in one incredible view after the next. After this stunning ride, you'll get to know one another better during a social hour, followed by dinner in the Crater Lake Lodge dining room before retiring to your room for a well-earned rest. Please note : Due to ongoing construction on East Rim Drive, riding the entire loop around the Crater Lake Rim will not be possible for several years, hence the out and back route to Cloudcap. Also, while the location is unparalleled, the accommodations at Crater Lake Lodge are rustic and feature basic amenities. Read More

Perched on the rim of Crater Lake, you will find no better place to take in the majestic view while relaxing with a drink on the porch than the unique and historic Crater Lake Lodge. The lodge was originally constructed in 1915 and retains much of the character from that era. The rooms are relatively small and do not have phones, televisions, or air conditioning, although the incredible scenery just outside your door more than makes up for the rustic feeling of the accommodations.

Switch to a different trip or different departure date. Should there be any difference in trip price between your original trip and the new one, you will be expected to pay the difference, or we will refund you accordingly.

The guide will support all rides with a Trek Travel van. If you would like to discuss the option of having two guides, please speak with your trip consultant.

The small trip supplement for Ride Camps is as follows – for two guests an additional $250 or for one guest an additional $500.

*Cross Country, Discover, Race, and Special Edition trips as well as a small number of select departures have a minimum guest count to guarantee. Please check with your Trip Consultant for more information.

Unforeseen events may make it necessary to cancel or modify a trip. Our Guest Services team will update you with any changes. We reserve the right to cancel departures in cases of force majeure or the failure of third parties—such as hotels—to honor their reservations, in which case all payments received to date will be refunded, which constitutes full settlement. A Star Trek film, Planet of the Titans, would have gone back to the dawn of time

J ust imagine it. Captain James T. Kirk [William Shatner], Spock [Leonard Nimoy], and Dr. Leonard "Bones' Mcoy [DeForest Kelley], along with the rest of the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series heading back to the dawn of history to help out the first humans. Yes, this almost happened after Star Trek's syndicated ratings went through the roof.

Of course Paramount wanted to see if they could make more money off of the series so the team put their collective heads together and tried to come up with a concept that would work. They considered another animated show, a television movie, and even another live-action series, but no one could quite pin down what should be done. Eventually, it was decided that a theatrical film would work and so the concepts began. [ via Den of Geek ]

Star Trek: Planet of the Titans would have taken The Original Series crew way back in history to a point in time where mankind hadn't yet discovered fire. That would have been something that the Enterprise crew would have proffered. That would have been difficult to explain, considering the Prime Directive forbids the interference of natural development of planets and aliens. Obviously, though, there would have been a moment during the film that fire was required, and Captain Kirk would have had no other choice but to provide it.

Alas, the movie didn't make it past development, though, concept art by Ralph McQuarrie was commissioned, which included an Enterprise refit, and though it wasn't used in the that movie, it was used in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and some episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You can see the images at ForgottenTrek.com like this one . This definitely sounds like a different type of Trek. And who knows? This concepte could still come to fruition in a Star Trek series or later movie.

Amazing Campsites

Description.

This amazing, off-the-beaten-path trek spans 32 miles and gains over 6600 ft in elevation in four days through a far less traveled part of North Cascades National Park due to its remote location.  We’ll hike along the famous Pacific Crest Trail; through quiet, old growth forests of Douglas-fir and Ponderosa Pine; and along pristine mountain creeks.  With exciting water crossings, high mountain passes and famous lakes, this trip delivers an invigorating, scenic adventure in a relatively short amount of time.  If you want to experience all the North Cascades have to offer – alpine lakes, jagged peaks, high and sub-alpine meadows, glorious campsites, and glacier fed waterways – this trip is an excellent choice!

  • Shuttle to Trailhead: 5 hours
  • Hiking Mileage: 4.7 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 1100 feet

This multi-day North Cascade National Park hike begins with a pick up in Seattle and then a scenic drive into the North Cascades. When we reach the trailhead, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch before packing up and hitting the trail. We’ll have a moderate hike down the forest canyon following a beautiful mountain creek, as it winds among groves of Douglas-fir and Ponderosa Pine. The creek will lead us to our first camp where we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner to prepare ourselves for a more challenging day 2.

  • Hiking Mileage: 10 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 3100 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 1000 feet

On day 2 we’ll rise, fuel our bodies with a quick breakfast, and pack up camp in a timely manner as we have much elevation to gain today! We’ll continue to follow yesterday’s creek until we reach a fork at which point we will ford the river to continue south toward a stunning lake. After making it safely across the creek, we’ll begin our trek toward an amazing pass with stunning views of Bowan Mountain. Our climb takes us up 3,100 feet over 6.9 miles. Just after the pass, we descend slightly, down to a mountain lake where we will relax and snap some photos. Once we arrive at camp, we’ll have the opportunity to relax over another delicious dinner.

  • Hiking Mileage: 9 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 2500 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 1800 feet

The morning of day 3 we’ll wake up and get ready for another full day of hiking! After we hit the trail, we’ll hike down through meadows of wildflowers and along a majestic creek, where we can soak up stunning views of jagged Rainbow Mountain. We’ll head north at the junction of another creek and start climbing along a ridge toward a high mountain pass. Once over the pass, we’ll make our way down toward a beautiful lake, heading off the main trail to camp in a spectacular subalpine meadow for the night. We’ll enjoy a rejuvenating dinner under the light of the stars to prepare for an invigorating last day of hiking.

  • Hiking Mileage: 9.7 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 1000 feet
  • Elevation Loss: 2700 feet

On our final day we’ll enjoy our breakfast watching the sun rise before embarking on our longest hike of the trip in terms of distance. We’ll hike down, down, down into the forest and have one more creek to ford before reaching the familiar site of the creek from day 1. All that’s left from here is a final push up the forested canyon where our journey began to our awaiting vehicle. A small celebration in the parking lot for completing a difficult loop in one of the North Cascades’ lesser known and traveled areas is in order! After a nice break and a chance to change our footwear, we’ll climb back into the car and head for your luxurious Seattle hotel room where a warm shower and a real bed await you!

Please Note : We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. • 12 and older to join scheduled tours (mixed groups)
  • 10 and older to join private tours, with final approval and specific logistical requirements (such as porter or stock assist) determined on a case by case basis

Weather in North Cascades National Park

The best hiking weather in the North Cascades is from mid June to late September, when the vast majority of trails (except ones up very high) are snow free. The west side of the Park catches the brunt of storm systems coming in from the Pacific Ocean, making the west side much wetter and more lush. The lower east side tends to be much warmer and drier throughout the summer. The west side receives on average 70+ inches more of precipitation and 400+ more inches of snowfall than the west side. Even with these discrpencies however, summer is a stunning time of year to be in the Cascades, on either side. See below for average temperatures and precipitation in North Cascades National Park:

Adam M & Alecia W

Worth the effort.

We went from 8/26-8/29 with Jordan (who was an excellent guide with a lot of local knowledge). The hiking (especially the final three days) was very strenuous, and featured climbs and descents that far exceed anything we could train for in a flat part of the US, and are not ideal for people with bad knees. The reward for all of this effort is endless jaw-dropping views of the "Alps of the Americas", delicious thimbleberries and huckleberries to sample (if they're in season when you go), and if you're lucky, an encounter with a pika. We recommend this trip to anybody who is prepared for it, and we would gladly go hiking with Jordan again.

Very challenging!

We went on this hike 8/18-8/21 with Jordan as our guide. First off, Jordan was awesome! He cooked great meals for us and took care of everything! Our group was the first for this hike with wildlandtrekking as it is a new offering. This hike is much more difficult and longer than listed. We all agreed this should be listed as difficulty 5 (for this reason I gave the hike a 3 rating)! Day 2 for example turned out to be an 11+ mile hike with almost 3400 feet of elevation gain and 1800 feet of descent. We hiked for about 11 hours that day and did not have much daylight to enjoy our campground. Jordan ended up cleaning everything in the dark while we crashed in our tents. I can't thank Jordan enough! The total trip was 37 miles with almost 8000 feet of elevation gain and another nearly 8000 loss. Day 3 when we crested McAllister pass, we had another mile hike with 300-400 elevation gain to get to our campsite. I believe they should choose campsites more wisely to even out the daily mileage and include a better day 3 campsite that does not include more elevation gain. Yes, it was tough! We did see bears, marmots (heard them also lol), pikas, and even a mountain goat! Scenery was beautiful and we enjoyed eating wild berries throughout our hike. Mountain meadows were beautiful with the many blooming flowers and greenery. I enjoy wildlandtrekking as their guides are always great, well prepared with great food. Management Response : Thank you for your feedback Jim. We very much appreciate it. Based on your and other guests' input, we have upgraded the difficult of this trip to Level 5. We're glad you enjoyed the scenery and your guide, and we're sorry this trip was more difficult than expected.

Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles Review

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases. Read more about us.

When it comes to enhancing your hiking experience, a robust set of trekking poles can make a world of difference. I’ve had the pleasure of using Cascade Mountain Tech’s Lightweight Aluminum Trekking Poles and can say they’ve lived up to the task.

The sturdiness one feels from the aircraft-grade aluminum construction is palpable, and they only weigh 10.4 ounces each, keeping your pack light. Where these poles really shine is their adaptability: the quick lock mechanism is a lifesaver on varied terrain, letting you adjust from 26” to 54” almost effortlessly.

The design doesn’t skimp on comfort either. The cork grip paired with the extended EVA down grip gives your hands a rest, reducing the impact of vibrations as you tackle those rocky paths. It’s great how the grip doesn’t feel slick in wet conditions, thanks to the adjustable wrist straps.

Even more, the versatility of these poles is unmatched, coming with a tip kit for different hiking conditions – talk about being prepared for anything nature throws at you.

They are one of my favorite budget trekking poles on the market.

Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles

Bottom Line

If you’re a hiking enthusiast on the lookout for poles that match durability with comfort and versatility, these Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles seem to check all the right boxes. Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles

Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles

  • Exceptional Quality and Lightweight
  • Aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum
  • 10.4-ounce each
  • Quick Lock Mechanism
  • 26”- 54”
  • Cork Grip with Extended EVA Down Grip
  • Included rubber snow and mud baskets, rubber boots, and rubber tips.

Their lightweight and robust aircraft-grade aluminum construction means they’re a solid choice for support, and they’ve held up well on rigorous trails.

The cork grips offer comfort over long distances, and the quick-lock feature simplifies adjustments on the move.

They come with a complete tip kit, catering to different hiking conditions, which is a nice touch. It’s also convenient that they include a storage bag for when you’re on the go.

However, some hikers might miss shock absorption, as these poles don’t have suspension.

Based on user feedback, they are generally well-received, but if you prioritize poles with suspension, these might not be your first pick.

Otherwise, they’re a dependable companion for your hiking adventures.

Overview of the Cascade Mountain Tech Lightweight Trekking Poles

When you’re out on the trail, the right equipment makes all the difference. These lightweight poles from Cascade Mountain Tech might just be your new go-to for stable support during those challenging hikes. Crafted with aircraft-grade aluminum, they offer a reliable build that manages to be both sturdy and surprisingly light in your hands—each pole weighing about a mere 10.4 ounces.

The trekking poles come with a quick lock system, enabling on-the-fly adjustments as you go from flatlands to steeper inclines. Yes, you can modify the pole length from 26 to 54 inches without missing a step. The comfort doesn’t stop at adjustability; the cork grips are designed to absorb trail vibrations and provide a natural feel in your palms, while the extended EVA down grip gives plenty of room for hand positioning no matter the slope or terrain ahead.

Equipped for all conditions, these poles come ready with tungsten carbide tips and additional baskets to handle mud, snow, or rugged surfaces. And when it’s time to pack up, the included carry bag makes stowing them away simple and hassle-free—not to forget, they’re just as easy to get back out when you find yourself facing another adventure. While there’s no suspension system, most find the adjustability and comfort features more than capable for a solid trekking experience.

In the realm of trekking poles, the build and heft are of paramount importance. Imagine you’re traversing a challenging trail; you grip your poles and feel the reassuring sturdiness thanks to the aircraft-grade aluminum, a material known for its resilience. Even with such strength, each pole only weighs a mere 10.4 ounces, light enough to prevent early fatigue on your long hikes.

The design ensures that these poles won’t let you down when lateral pressure tests their limits. Unlike their carbon fiber counterparts, which can be more prone to snapping, these are built to endure. This is particularly beneficial for when you encounter a variety of terrains and want to rely on your equipment fully without any worries.

However, determining the poles’ worth isn’t just about their robust construction but also the ease with which you handle them. They have a comfortable, natural cork grip, which proves to be a boon in reducing vibration on rocky paths, making your hiking experience more pleasant. The extended EVA down grip offers a sizable area for your hand placement, which can be a great relief on steep inclines.

Though these poles are sturdy and reliable, they’re not without their limitations. Always weigh the conditions and terrain you are planning to face against the product’s capabilities. Keep in mind—the weather and trail ruggedness should guide your choice just as much as the features of any trekking pole.

Innovative Quick Lock Mechanism

When you’re out on the trail, adjusting your trekking poles quickly can be crucial, especially when traversing variable terrain. The Quick Lock Mechanism on these poles lets you easily and swiftly tweak the length from 26” to 54”. This feature is invaluable as you don’t have to pause for a lengthy adjustment period, which you will appreciate on steep inclines or when moving from tough ascents to descents.

The strength and reliability of the Quick Lock are impressive, holding up against the lateral pressure that might cause inferior poles to give way. You will feel confident on your hikes, knowing that the poles’ length will stay fixed once you’ve adjusted them to your preference, giving you one less thing to worry about as you focus on the path ahead.

Though the Quick Lock system is robust, some may find it requires a bit of practice to get the hang of. Yet once mastered, it’s a straightforward feature that enhances your hiking experience significantly. Whether you encounter rain, mud, or snow, this trekking pole won’t let you down, ensuring your outdoor endeavors are both safe and enjoyable.

Ergonomic Cork Grip with Extended EVA Down Grip

When you’re traversing across a rugged landscape, the ergonomic cork grip of the Cascade trekking poles offers both comfort and durability. The cork material conforms to your hand’s shape over time, providing a personalized fit. Vibration absorption is key when it comes to reducing fatigue on long hikes, and this grip handles that exceptionally, minimizing discomfort as you navigate uneven terrain.

Moreover, the extended EVA foam grip proves invaluable when you encounter sudden changes in elevation. Its substantial length allows for quick adjustments of hand positions, which is especially useful on steep inclines. Unlike some grips that can get slippery when wet, the combination of cork and EVA ensures that your hold remains secure even in damp conditions, aided by the adjustable wrist straps that add an extra layer of security.

While the benefits are numerous, some may find the texture of the cork grip not to their liking initially, especially if they are accustomed to rubber or plastic handles. However, it generally gains favor as it wears in. This feature exemplifies the thoughtful design tailored to avid hikers who demand longevity and adaptability from their gear.

Versatility Across Terrain and Conditions

With your adventurous spirit, you’ll appreciate how the Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles handle diverse landscapes. Crafted with robust aluminum, they stand up to the challenges of vigorous trails. The quick lock feature shines when switching from flat meadows to steep inclines, allowing for swift length adjustments.

The cork grip, combined with the additional EVA down grip, provides comfort and versatility in grip placement, crucial when tackling unpredictable terrain. These grips help absorb vibrations, making each step steadier. When facing slick rock faces or muddy paths, the tungsten carbide tips of these poles offer reliable traction, giving you the confidence to press on.

Different trail conditions are no match for the included accessories. The various baskets and rubber tips adapt quickly to snow, mud, or rocky conditions. However, it’s worth noting they’re not invincible; aluminum can bend under extreme duress, something to bear in mind for those pushing their gear to the limits. Despite this, they provide reliable support in an array of environments, ensuring your focus remains on the breathtaking views rather than what’s underfoot.

Compact and Easy Portability

When it comes to taking your trekking poles on the go, Cascade Mountain Tech offers a solution that’s both lightweight and convenient. Weighing in at just over 10 ounces, these trekking poles won’t add undue burden to your pack, making them perfect for long hikes or swift jaunts alike. The quick lock mechanism is a standout feature, allowing you to adjust the length of the poles on-the-fly, catering to both tall and short users without pausing your trek.

Stowing away these poles is a breeze, thanks to their compact size when fully collapsed. You’ll have no trouble fitting them into the included travel bag, sliding them neatly alongside your other gear. And with this kind of portability, you’ll find yourself ready to tackle new trails at a moment’s notice. The extended down grip provides ample space for your hands, which means even on those steep, challenging segments, your hands find a comfortable position quickly, ensuring you always have the best grip and control.

Whether you find yourself navigating rocky inclines or descending slippery slopes, these trekking poles will be a reliable partner, never a cumbersome addition to your hiking essentials.

Pros and Cons

When you’re out conquering the trails, the Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles can be a solid choice to support you along the way. These poles offer exceptional durability with their aircraft-grade aluminum construction and are lightweight at 10.4 ounces each, making them easy to carry. The cork grip is designed with comfort in mind, reducing vibration as you navigate tricky terrain, and the extended EVA down grip gives you extra room for hand placement on steep inclines.

  • Durability: Quality aircraft-grade aluminum stands up to rough handling.
  • Adjustability: Quick lock mechanism allows for easy height adjustments.
  • Comfort: Cork and extended EVA grips help with a comfortable, ergonomic hold.
  • Versatility: Comes with a kit to adapt to various terrains and conditions.
  • Portability: Transporting is a breeze with the included travel bag.
  • No Suspension: Without shock absorption, you might feel more impact.
  • Learning Curve: If you’re new to trekking poles, there’s a slight learning curve for optimal use.

Users report that once you’ve adjusted them to your liking, they stay firmly in place, even during uphill treks. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for extra stability, these trekking poles are praised for their reliability and comfort. Critics mention a wish for suspension to further reduce impact; however, even seasoned hikers who were once skeptical have turned into believers after using these poles on challenging terrains.

The comfort and ergonomic design of the cork grips have been appreciated, especially for long-duration treks where hand fatigue can be an issue.

While the product has gathered a flock of supporters citing the lightness and ease of adjustability, some note the absence of shock-absorbing suspension. This was not a deal-breaker for most but is something to consider depending on your preference.

In addition, the trekking poles have crossed borders, garnering positive feedback in Spanish, hinting at their broad appeal. This could be a testament to their versatility and overall quality. Whether you’re new to hiking or boast decades of experience, it appears these poles have something for everyone, aiding in stability and support where knees and balance might be compromised.

With firsthand use, it is evident that the Cascade Mountain Tech trekking poles are an excellent companion for your outdoor adventures. Their robust aircraft-grade aluminum ensures durability, making them suitable for various terrains. The cork grips provide comfortable handling, reducing fatigue during prolonged hikes. The lack of suspension is worth noting, though many find the lightweight design compensates for this, easing travel with less strain on your arms. The included tip kit is also a thoughtful addition, enhancing the poles’ versatility. While skeptics may initially overlook trekking poles, real-life experiences from long-time hikers and newcomers alike underscore the positive impact these poles can have on your stability and endurance during outdoor pursuits.

Frequently Asked Questions

When you’re weighing your options between different types of trekking poles, several questions might pop up, especially concerning the Cascade Mountain Tech poles. Here’s a breakdown of some common inquiries that can help you in your decision-making process.

What are the differences between aluminum and carbon fiber Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles?

Aluminum trekking poles, like the model you’re considering, are appreciated for their durability and resistance to snapping under stress. Carbon fiber poles are known for being lighter but can be more prone to breaking if put under lateral pressure. The poles under discussion, made of aircraft-grade aluminum, offer a sturdy support system on diverse terrains, providing a reliable but heavier alternative to their carbon fiber counterparts.

How do you adjust and use Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles?

These trekking poles feature a Quick Lock mechanism, which allows for easy adjustment of the length to match your height and the terrain. To adjust, simply open the lock, set the pole to the desired length (anywhere between 26” to 54”), and close the lock to secure it in place. The poles are fitted with ergonomic cork grips that include an extended EVA down grip, letting you comfortably change your hand placement while tackling steep inclines.

What is the weight of Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles?

Each pole weighs 10.4 ounces, which is relatively lightweight for aluminum trekking poles. This ensures that you won’t be bogged down by excessive weight on your hikes, yet you’ll still benefit from the strength that aluminum offers.

Where are Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles manufactured?

Cascade Mountain Tech is a brand known to produce various outdoor equipment. The specific manufacturing location for their trekking poles is not provided in the product details. Cascade Mountain Tech is based in the United States and designs products that meet rigorous outdoor standards, with quality control measures to maintain consistency.

How do you replace the tips on Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles?

The poles come with a tip kit for easy replacement. Simply pull off the old tip and firmly press the new tip onto the bottom of the pole. It’s recommended to check the fit and make sure the new tip is securely attached before heading out. The included kit contains a variety of tips that cater to different terrains and conditions, like rubber tips for general hiking, as well as snow and mud baskets.

Are Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles available at Costco and do they differ from other models?

Yes, you can find Cascade Mountain Tech Trekking Poles at Costco. Sometimes the models sold at Costco may have slight variations in design or accessories included. However, they should perform equally well as other models offered through different retailers. Before purchasing, compare the features of the Costco model with other options to ensure it meets your specific needs.

With these questions in mind, you should have a clearer picture of whether the Cascade Mountain Tech aluminum trekking poles fit the bill for your outdoor adventures. Just remember to consider factors like the terrain you’ll be covering, your individual preferences for pole weight and material, as well as any convenience features that might enhance your hiking experience.

Final Verdict: Best Performance

Let’s face it, you pay for what you get. You’ve got many options, but if you’re really interested in performance I highly recommend you consider this one.

At Crave the Planet, I’m all about honest and relatable reviews of outdoor products. As a physical therapist, hut to hut hiker, downhill skier and mom, I’m constantly trying new gear to make my outdoor experiences more comfy and fun but with science in mind.

I’ll be real with you, I don’t do every outdoor activity. But, who does? I’m just a regular person who loves exploring the planet. Perfectionism is my enemy and I hope to help you ditch that vibe too.

My review process involves testing each product in real-life outdoor situations, but if it’s a really horrible day I’ll probably find a hotel in the valley. I’ll let you know what worked for me and what didn’t, so you can make informed decisions about your gear choices.

I don’t do sponsored reviews or take payment for my reviews. All comments are based on my personal experience. Sometimes I’ll test something and then send it back for a refund. Usually there’s a hefty fee. Bummer. So, if you’re looking for a relatable and honest take on outdoor gear, you’re in the right place.

Best Trekking Poles for Backpacking in 2024

H ave you ever been hunched over while climbing up a steep trail, with your hands looking for somewhere to rest? Inevitably, when I don’t have trekking poles, my hands end up on my lower back or chest straps. These are not particularly powerful positions and can make it more difficult to breathe properly. With poles, I can power up hills in an efficient position and take advantage of more stability and coordination on tricky descents.

A strong yet lightweight pair of trekking poles is often a high priority on a thru-hiker’s wish list. Not only do they help with hiking efficiency, but many ultralight shelters require poles to pitch. But where do you begin to choose? Though the products may all seem similar at first glance, slight differences in design make a huge difference.

Poles are a massive help when I’m trying to get up to a summit quickly before sunset.

The Best Backpacking Trekking Poles of 2024

Black diamond pursuit flz trekking poles  (most durable poles).

best backpacking trekking poles

Best backpacking trekking poles: Black Diamond Pursuit FLZ

  • MSRP:  $160
  • Weight (Pair):  17 oz (S/M) | 18 oz (M/L)
  • Materials Used:  aluminum shafts, cork handles
  • Design:  Z-folding, fixed length
  • Max Length:  110 – 125 cm (S/M) | 125 – 140 cm (M/L)

Why We Love These Poles

The Black Diamond Pursuit FLZ aluminum poles are extremely durable and suitable for four-season adventures, yet they remain packable. With a z-folding design, these poles collapse down to as little as 41 centimeters / 16 inches for the smaller size. They’re still adjustable with one flick lock adjuster. The poles come in two different sizes depending on your height. The cork handles wick moisture very well, and there’s an extended foam handle for grip adjustability.

For those who prefer telescoping poles, check out the Black Diamond Alpine Cork trekking poles — another durable four-season option.

  • Cork handles:  Cork handles wick moisture extremely well and provide additional grip in wet / sweaty situations.
  • Z-folding design:  These easily snap into place with a button that locks them into place, and then are stored by simply releasing that button.
  • Strong aluminum shafts:  These poles are extremely durable and will stand up to thousands of miles of use.

Nobody’s Perfect

These poles are pricey and a bit heavier. They definitely have a place for hikers who use and abuse their gear, but I don’t recommend them if you’re trying to go as lightweight as possible.

Leki Cressida FX Carbon Trekking Poles (Best Women’s Poles)

best backpacking trekking poles

Best backpacking trekking poles: Leki Cressida FX Carbon

  • MSRP:  $230
  • Weight (Pair): 17.2 oz
  • Materials Used: Carbon shafts, cork handles
  • Design: Z-folding with one flick lock adjuster
  • Max Length:  120 cm

These poles are comfortable, intuitive, and durable. They’re smaller than most unisex poles, having been designed with smaller people in mind, and the handles are smaller to accommodate smaller hands as well.

For men and larger people who love the features of the Cressida, you might want to check out the Makalu FX Carbon , the Cressida’s unisex counterpart. This pole has all the same features but is larger overall.

  • Ergonomic grip: The extended cork grips and rubberized grip head allow for a variety of grip styles, and the grip is designed to better fit a woman’s hand.
  • Packability:  The z-folding design makes these poles easy to store either inside or outside your pack. They pack down to a scant 16 inches, making them one of the most compact poles on this list.

Despite being compact, these poles are on the heavier side. They’re also quite expensive—the highest price tag on this list. Because they’re designed for women, they’re shorter than your average unisex pole and thus might be too short to set up certain trekking pole tents.

They’re a great option for hikers looking for durable and packable trekking poles, but they’re neither the lightest nor the most budget-friendly option.

REI Flash Carbon Trekking Poles | Flash Carbon Compact Poles (Easy To Use)

trek planet cascade

Best backpacking trekking poles: REI Flash Carbon.

  • MSRP:  $169
  • Weight (Pair): 12.9 oz (compact) | 13.6 oz (regular)
  • Materials Used:  carbon shafts, foam handles
  • Design:  telescoping with two flick locks
  • Max Length: 90 – 120 cm (compact) | 105 cm – 140 cm (regular)

The REI Flash Carbon poles are simple to use and comfortable to grip. They’re a strong, lightweight option ideal for thru-hikers. They weigh well under a pound yet are designed to hold up for thousands of miles. I’ve personally used these poles for a number of backpacking trips, day hikes, and trail runs. I love their ease of use.

  • Easy adjustments:  The oversized flick lock adjustments are very simple, even with gloves or mittens on. The bottom section of the pole stays fixed at the maximum length while the top adjusts to the desired height.
  • Lightweight carbon shafts:  These poles are very lightweight, thanks to their carbon design.
  • Two different size options:  The Compact Flash Carbon is shorter and may feel more comfortable for shorter hikers. The weight difference between the two sizes is negligible.

The foam handles on these poles are not very durable or moisture-wicking. Multiple reviewers have noted that the foam grip on top of the pole breaks off, and I actually experienced that myself. Durability is essential when selecting a product to use for thousands of miles.

Zpacks Minimalist Trekking Pole   (Best Value Poles)

Best backpacking trekking poles

Best backpacking trekking poles: Zpacks Minimalist.

  • MSRP:  $100
  • Weight (Pair): 10.2 oz
  • Materials Used: carbon shaft, foam handles
  • Design:  telescoping with two twist locks
  • Max Length: 105 cm – 132 cm

These poles are super lightweight and have a wide range of adjustability. Zpacks saves weight with a simple twist lock design—which is also less prone to breaking or loosening than flick lock technology. Each pole also comes with rubber tip protectors and powder baskets.

  • Lightweight carbon shaft:  At just over 10 ounces for the pair of poles, these are one of the lightest options available for thru-hikers and backpackers conscious of every gram.
  • Pack down very small: When fully packed down, their size is competitive with z-folding options.
  • Designed to pair with Zpacks tents:  The pole is designed specifically to fit into the construction of all of the Zpacks plex tents, besides the Altaplex.
  • Can be bought as single pole or pair: Make sure you select the right option! Hikers who only use a single pole will appreciate the option to save money on a superfluous secondary pole.

I don’t love the twist lock adjustability. While it does save weight over flicks or clasps, it can be kind of a pain to adjust and takes a bit of getting used to.

  • Materials Used: carbon shaft, EVA foam handles
  • Design:  telescoping with double twist locks
  • Max Length:  130 cm max length

Gossamer Gear is a thru-hiker fan favorite for ultralight, durable gear. Their LT5 trekking poles are the lightest poles included in this list, and their durability has been well noted amongst reviewers. (The Trek’s reviewer has put well over 3000 miles on his pair so far and says they’re still going strong. Read the full review here .)

They also collapse down small enough to fit into almost any pack and pair perfectly with Gossamer Gear’s shelter setups.

  • Collapsable size:  The fully collapsed size on these poles is even smaller than the Zpacks minimalist poles. This allows the pole to also work with ultralight backpacks or even a running vest for single-day adventures.
  • Pairs with GG shelters:  If you’re eyeing one of Gossamer Gear’s popular ultralight shelters, these poles are designed to pair perfectly.
  • Extremely Lightweight: For the pair, these are the lightest poles included in this list.
  • Replaceable tips: Unlike many poles, the tips are modular and easily replaceable. This is a valuable feature since the tips often wear out well before the rest of the pole.

Though these strike a wonderful balance of weight and durability, the LT5 poles are quite pricey. Also, the twisting lock mechanism takes a bit more time to deploy than flick- or z-folding poles.

Black Diamond Distance Z Trekking Poles (Best Fixed Length Poles)

Best backpacking trekking poles

Best backpacking trekking poles: Black Diamond Distance Z.

  • MSRP:  $140
  • Weight (Pair):  11.2 oz (100 cm) | 11.6 oz (110 cm) | 12.2 oz (120 cm) | 12.6 oz (130 cm)
  • Materials Used: aluminum shafts, extended foam handles
  • Design: Z-folding fixed-length poles
  • Max Length:  100 cm | 110 cm | 120 cm | 130 cm

Fixed-length poles absolutely have a time and place. Some hikers may only plan to use the added support for a specific type of terrain. Or, if you’re planning a relatively flat thru-hike, you might not need any adjustment. These poles are extremely durable and still very lightweight. Furthermore, they’re so easy to use that you don’t even have to break stride when pulling them off the side of your pack.

  • Extremely easy deployment:  These poles deploy in about five seconds. All you have to do is snap the shaft into place by pulling on the top piece. This is extremely helpful for hikers who like to stay on the move, and store or use poles quickly, depending on the terrain.
  • Lightweight aluminum construction:  The aluminum shafts are strong and durable. And, because there is no added weight for adjustable sizing, they’re still one of the lightest poles included in this list.
  • Extended foam handles:  The foam handles extend below the typical grip area. This helps to increase the usability of these poles, even with the fixed length. Reaching your hands further down on the grip “shortens” the poles for steeper climbs.
  • No telescoping sections to collapse on you: There’s nothing worse than trusting your weight to a trekking pole on uneven terrain and having one of the telescoping sections collapse on you. Happily, that risk doesn’t exist with these fixed-length poles.

Obviously, lack of versatility is a huge downside for fixed-length poles. They’re really best used for either mostly flat terrain or if you only plan to use poles on the ascent or descent exclusively.

Diorite Gear Telescopic Carbon Fiber Poles with EVA Foam (Extra-Long Poles)

Best backpacking trekking poles

Best backpacking trekking poles: Diorite Gear

  • Weight (Pair): 14.8 oz
  • Materials Used: Carbon fiber shaft, extended EVA foam handles
  • Design: Telescoping with double flick lock
  • Max Length:  158 cm

We love supporting small businesses, and the Diorites are made in the US by Portland-based Cnoc. Telescoping from a collapsed length of 71 centimeters all the way out to a whopping 157, these poles have the greatest functional length of any on this list, making them great for tall hikers or tall tents like the Zpacks Altaplex .

These poles are fully modular, so you can replace any individual section that breaks, as well as the carbide tips. Cnoc is also known for its great customer service.

  • EVA foam handle: EVA foam makes for a comfy handle that’s extra long to accommodate a variety of grip positions. Cnoc also makes a cork-handle pole .
  • Adjustable polyester and microfiber straps: The straps are wide and plush with microfiber interiors for comfortable wear around the wrist. They’re also color-coded (yellow on the left and green on the right) so you don’t mix them up.
  • Can be bought as singles or pairs: Like the Zpacks Minimalist above, you also have the option to buy just one Diorite pole if you need a replacement or prefer to hike with just one pole.

The poles only collapse to 28 inches (71 centimeters) which is still fairly long for storing in your pack. They’re also one of the priciest poles on this list.

Cascade Mountain Tech Aluminum Quick Lock Trekking Poles (Best Budget Trekking Poles)

trek planet cascade

Best backpacking trekking poles: Cascade Mountain Tech Aluminum

  • Weight (Pair): 20.8 oz
  • Materials Used: Aluminum shaft, cork handle with extended EVA foam grip
  • Design: Telescoping with two external flick locks
  • Max Length: 137 cm

Not everyone wants to spend upwards of $200 on hiking sticks. At 21 ounces, these bad boys aren’t ultralight by any stretch, but they’re light and functional enough to make sense for backpacking—at a fraction of the cost of premium poles. They’re a great choice for beginners and budget-conscious thru-hikers alike.

Carbon fiber edition: Cascade Mountain Tech also makes a popular carbon fiber pole —with fun colorways! — at 16.6 ounces for the pair. The MSRP is $65, but you can find them for slightly less on Amazon , and they often pop up at Costco for under $40.

  • Spare parts available: You can replace virtually every component of the pole individually, extending your poles’ lifespan and saving you even more money in the long term (not to mention keeping your poles away from the landfill for longer).
  • Adjustable nylon webbing straps: The straps can be tightened or loosened to adjust the fit and width.
  • Hybrid cork/EVA handle: Cork feels better in the hand, but it’s also heavier than EVA. CMT’s hybrid approach maximizes functionality while minimizing weight.

Durability could be an issue with these poles, especially if you go with the carbon fiber version — we’ve read several accounts of them snapping at inopportune times. Still, plenty of other hikers have had them last a full thru-hike or longer, and it’s hard to argue with the price point.

Features to Look For in the Best Thru-Hiking Trekking Poles

Aluminum vs. carbon fiber shaft: Aluminum and carbon fiber are the two most common materials found in trekking poles. Aluminum poles are more durable and less sensitive to temperature changes but significantly heavier than carbon poles. Carbon poles are lighter but more brittle and generally more expensive.

Flick lock vs. twist lock adjustment: The two most common adjusting mechanisms are flick locks and twisting locks. Flick-lock poles use a little lever that will unlock the pole pieces so you can slide the sizing up or down. Twist locks require you to twist to the left to release the pole and twist it right to close it.

Flick locks are very convenient but tend to loosen over time and require tools to fix. On the other hand, twist locks are a bit more of a pain to adjust but are easier to repair in the field.

Foam vs. cork handles: The poles included in this article use either foam or cork handles. Foam handles are cushier, but they don’t wick moisture as well. In other words, if you tend to sweat a lot, foam handles become slippery and can even leave black marks on your hands. Cork handles feel a bit rougher to the touch for some, but they do a much better job of wicking moisture.

Some poles also feature extended handles. This gives the hiker ability to adjust their grip depending on the terrain.

Telescoping vs. Z-Folding: Lightweight trekking poles are typically designed one of two ways: telescoping and z-folding. Telescoping poles typically have higher ranges of adjustability. They use either twist or flick-lock technology to expand into different sizes. However, they don’t pack down quite as small as a z-folding pole.

Z-folding poles break into three different sections connected by an internal cord. They pack small enough to fit even onto the side of a trail running vest. However, they typically have only one or zero points of size adjustability. Because of this, they won’t have as great of a range of size manipulation. The shafts of folding poles are thinner

since the sections don’t need to slide into each other. This makes them lighter but also potentially less durable. On the other hand, they don’t need twist- or flick-lock mechanisms, which means fewer breakable components.

Why Poles Are Effective

trek planet cascade

You typically want trekking poles fixed at a length where your elbows are at 90 degrees

Trekking poles are extremely helpful for both the uphill and downhill. On the ups, the poles help propel your momentum forward and hike in a continuous rhythm. I find that when I don’t have poles, my hands make their way to my back on steep hills, and I cut off proper breathing.

On the downhills, your poles act as extra limbs to help navigate tricky terrain. They also reduce the impact on your knees and ankles by absorbing some of the downhill shock on your body while you cruise long descents. Additionally, they help you to navigate obstacles like stream crossing by providing extra stability.

How To Adjust Trekking Poles

To get the best use out of your trekking poles, you want them at a length where your elbows stay at 90 degrees. This is why most poles are adjustable: so they can become a bit longer on the descents and shorter on the ascents. I highly recommend adjustable poles. The only scenario where I think fixed-length poles make sense is if you’re only planning to use poles on either the ups or downs, not all the time.

While there are size charts depending on your weight, it’s best to measure yourself. If you’re shopping in person, you want to grab the pole upside down underneath the basket and adjust it to the length where your elbow is at 90 degrees. This will be the size of your poles on flat terrain. I recommend choosing a size with roughly five centimeters of adjustability in each direction from your flat ground size.

Two Ways To Hold Trekking Poles

Some people prefer to hold the poles firmly by the handles. This grip is intuitive and allows you to slide your hands up and down the handles to adjust the length of the pole depending on the slope angle. Some manufacturers now make poles with extra-long handles for just this reason.

Meanwhile, other people prefer to grip the poles “ski style” by feeding their hands up through the bottom of the strap and holding the handle loosely so the top of the strap runs between their thumb and index finger. This allows the pole to swing more freely and allows the user to plant it firmly without having to keep a death grip on the handle.

To sum up: trekking poles are helpful for just about every uphill athlete. They’re wildly popular among backpackers because of their momentum and impact-absorbing benefits. Furthermore, most ultralight shelters require trekking poles to pitch. Whether weight, price, or packability is your main priority when selecting poles, there’s a great option here for every hiker.

Aaaaaand one of my favorite trekking pole benefits is their compatibility with ultralight shelters.

this is really good post, thank you for sharing with us

trek planet cascade

Great article – but where are the Cascade Mnt Tech carbon fiber poles on your list?

trek planet cascade

Hard to take this article seriously when only name brands are considered. The CMT cork-handled carbon poles are <$60 and you can get aluminum ones for $30. I’ve used the CMT poles for 1500 trail miles and find it very difficult to imagine there’s $150 of extra value in the name brands. (My carbon/cork poles were $50 at time of purchase.)

Over my travels, I’ve seen the CMT poles just as much (or more) as Leki and BD. In fact, I can purchase my exact carbon cork poles on Amazon for $53 and have cheaper/lighter poles than the “budget” option in the article.

trek planet cascade

huge oversight imo not to include cascade mountain tech poles. hard to justify paying up for anything else.

trek planet cascade

Great article, I duck tape 12 ounce lead sinkers to my poles when I am day walking but take them off for backpacking.

trek planet cascade

So many of the pictures show handles that are not black. I had no idea foam handles now come in cork colors

trek planet cascade

Disappointed to not see Cascade Tech and BD Ergo Cork. The Ergo sets this pole off from all the others. Pacer Poles would also have been one to look at.

trek planet cascade

Could you include Pacerpoles in your 2024 survey, I have been hiking with them for over 27,000 thru hiking miles so far, and they truly have made all the difference, saved my wife and me on countless occasions, and kept the tent over our heads

trek planet cascade

Used CMT carbon fiber poles for 2 years/1100 miles and ended up switching back to their aluminum version. Their carbon fiber shafts are just too thin for use on trails with more technical terrain such as talus fields or creek beds where the tip may see a momentary lateral (bending) load. After snapping a few carbon poles in the Sierra and switching to their aluminum version, I have only good things to say about their reliability. The lever locks and handles are extremely well built and reliable. The carbide tip inserts don’t last for more than 600 miles and can’t be replaced which is my only gripe. If you are trekking on less demanding trails, CMT’s carbon fiber may work for you. Would not use the carbon fiber variant on something like the Pacific Crest Trail. CMT figured out how to make a great product with a very respectable price point.
