Coorg tops the list when we talk about places for a 3-Day Trips From Bangalore. Coorg is quite famous among Bangaloreans for many reasons. It is well connected and takes only 6 hours drive from the bustling city of Bangalore. It also has a plethora of options when it comes to activities that can be taken up on the spot. Coorg is also well known for its green landscapes and coffee. Coorg or Kodagu is your most satisfying weekend escape. Start your day with Abbey falls while covering the coffee and spice estates. And by evening, rejuvenate yourself with the amazing sunset at Raja’s Seat. Bhagamandala and Talacauvery will fall in the next day’s itinerary.

Coorg is also known for its wildlife sanctuaries. Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary, Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary are the must-visit places in Coorg. When coming to the weather, Temperature is always between 23-28 degrees celsius and nights are usually cold. So pack some extra sweater for the nights. The Palace is enclosed within beautiful gardens. The architecture is a medley of Tudor style and Scottish style and has gothic undertones. A lot of physical artefacts inside are of British origin. It is said that the architecture of this building is inspired by that of the Windsor Castle and other architectural marvels of England and Normandy. The most prominent features of the Palace like the two-level granite structure of the fortified towers and turreted parapets take direct inspiration from the Tudor building styles. The entrance is decorated with grand Roman arches. The exterior of the building is covered in eccentric shapes and angles. As we sailed in the Tungabhadra River, I could picture myself as one of the thousands of foreign travelers and merchants who came to Hampi in the 14th-16th century. The lively road trip from Bangalore , the grandeur of the ruins, the sunset at Tungabhadra – they will be etched in my memories forever. 

So let me help you plan a Hampi trip from Bangalore , or anywhere in India for that matter.

This is the best itinerary for a weekend trip to Hampi from Bangalore on a long weekend. Our trip was slightly different because we left late and had to leave Hampi earlier for some reason.

Well, things don't always turn out the way you planned, but it's always good to have a solid itinerary to begin with. Let's start with that here, and then we'll see how my trip with friends turned out.

Day 1: Reach Hampi

• Start Early from Bangalore : Check-in to Hotel by 2 pm

An introduction of Hampi – a UNESCO Heritage site

Located in Karnataka , India, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site. When you start planning your trip to Hampi, it's important to know a little bit about the history of this place.

Hampi is famous for being the capital of the great Vijayanagara empire of the 14th and 15th centuries . However, the documented history of Hampi goes back to the kingdom of Ashoka.

The region was successively ruled by many great Hindu dynasties before the Vijayanagara kingdom was formed. 

With Hampi as the capital, the kings of the Vijayanagara empire controlled a major part of South India . This made possible, the booming trade relations with countries all over the world. The prosperity and greatness of this Hampi have been chronicled in many travelogues of that time.

Day 1 of 3: Bangalore to Hampi itinerary

It's ideal to leave Bangalore by 6 am so that you face less traffic and can reach Hampi by noon. However, we started late. By the time we freshened up at our hotel and had our much-needed lunch, it was almost 4 pm.

Hampi has two distinct areas separated by the beautiful Tungabhadra river – the main Hampi and the North Hampi. There is, of course, another less explored part of Hampi, which is wildlife! Yes, we will talk about it later.

The Hampi bazaar was just 2 km from our hotel, so we started with the hope of exploring them. You can easily call this part of Hampi an open-air museum. You don't need to search for sites, it's all around you.

Royal Enclosure Area |   Hampi itinerary

The most prominent structure here is the Mahanabami Dibba  which was used for Dushera festivities. Other significant places to see here are the  King's audience hall , a.k.a. 100-pillared hall, the Queen's bath , the Octagonal bath , the stepped tank , the public bath , and horse stables .

The royal enclosure was the seat of the emperor of the Vijayanagara kingdom and naturally the home to many significant monuments. There are over 45 structures in the Royal enclosure, or should I say ruins of the glorious structures that once existed.

We parked near the Danaik enclosure and walked straight to the Queen's bath. From there we just explored the area on foot.

Queen's Bath

Danaik's Enclosure Area   | Hampi itinerary

Danaik's enclosure or Dannanayaka enclosure is adjacent to the Royal enclosure, and an area which historians are divided on.

Some believe it to be the mint area of Hampi, some the seat of administration (Danaik meaning chief administrator), while some say it is the military training area. Most of the monuments here were completely destroyed, hence the ambiguity.

As we entered the beautiful Hazara Rama temple, a monument that has withstood the test of time; we could hear the evening azaan from the Mohammedan quarter. The Mohammedan watchtower offers a great panoramic view of the Hampi bazaar.

This place is famous for bouldering, a perfect adventure in the rocky landscape of Hampi. The weather was cloudy and pleasant, but not ideal for watching the sunset. We climbed one of the smaller rocks to watch the dramatic landscape in the evening. 

Hemkunta Group of Temples

As we went past the Royal enclosure towards the Tungabhadra River, our eyes fell on the canvas of stone on our left side. It was a cluster of ancient temples on the Hemkunta hills – the Hemkanta Group of temples.

The architecture of these temples is distinct from the rest of the Hampi group of monuments. These temples were built between 9th and 14th centuries. Traces of fortifications show that this area was a protected zone during that era.

The next stop from here normally would be Zenana Enclosure, which is just 750 meters from the Danaik's enclosure. However, we decided to visit the Tungabhadra River for a coracle ride. Unfortunately, the coracle ride closes at 6 pm, and by this time it was dark.

We sat at the banks of the river and enjoyed the serene calm, unlikely of such a tourist hot-spot. We had the quintessential Bengali “Adda” (chit-chat with friends on topics ranging from nature to politics).

  That was the end of our first day at Hampi. We returned to our hotel and played cards till midnight.

We spent so much time reading all the background stories and navigating our way in Hampi.

So, I highly recommend this 2-hour guided walking tour of this historic site .

It will help optimize your time on Day 1.

Day 2 of 3: Hampi itinerary from Bangalore

Our plan for the next day was ambitious but doable. If you have just one day in Hampi, this could be your itinerary.

We decided to start the day at 9 am with a tour of the archaeological museum of Hampi. Luckily this was exactly opposite to our hotel.

Archeological Museum of Hampi

There is one Hampi ticket (costs Rs. 40/-) valid for 24 hours, which will have you covered for the Archeological Museum in Hampi and the UNESCO group of Monuments – the Vijaya Vittala Temple and the Zenana Enclosure.

The Archeological Museum is a great place to start your day as it will give you the best introduction to this Heritage site.

It was also our obvious choice as we stayed at Clarkes' Inn Hampi , right opposite to the museum. I highly recommend this mid-budget property.

The museum has a beautiful lawn with some pillars excavated from the ruins. Inside the museum, you will find a large model of the city. This will give you a solid orientation of the city and help you with planning. It would have been ideal if they had audio guides available in the museum but they don't.

All the relics are supported by sufficient information written in English, Hindi, and Kannada. Some of the notable collections here are the idols of Hindu deities and the coins of different eras from the Chalukyas to the kings of Vijayanagara.

Another interesting exhibit was the one showing the evolution of the Devanagari script.  

Things to Note!

• Entry Fee – Rs. 40, including Vijaya Vittala Complex and Zenana Enclosure Complex.
• Open time: 10 am to 5 pm
• Photography – Free

Vittala Temple Complex

From the museum, we drove straight to North Hampi on the other side of the Tungabhadra River.

The best alternative of driving is taking a boat from the banks of Tungabhadra to go to the other side. When you search on Google Maps, use “Vijaya Vittala temple” since there is another Vittala temple almost 100 km away from Hampi.

The Vittala Temple is the zenith of architecture in the Vijayanagara kingdom and a must-to-include place in your Hampi itinerary. From the parking area, you can either walk 1.5 km to the temple complex or you can hire a tuk-tuk.

At Rs.20 per person, the tuk-tuk takes you to the main temple complex from where you can explore the Vittala Bazaar, the temple, and the river. On your way back you just have to wait in queue for a tuk-tuk to arrive.

No matter how packed your schedule is you will have to spend at least 2 hours in the complex. The Vittala bazaar was the large market of North Hampi. A series of parallel pillars on both sides lead to the main entrance of the Vittala temple complex.

As soon as you enter the complex you see the spectacular Stone chariot, the icon of Hampi, right in front of you. It was built out of multiple granite blocks put one over the other. The intricate carvings on the joins completely hide the crease giving an impression of a monolithic shrine.

This is where we saw the overwhelming crowd that we were (not) missing till now. People thronged upon the stone chariot waiting for their turn to take multiple photos, while we continued our way to the main hall.

We then entered the gate of the main Vittala temple. There were two temples here. One of these had the famous musical pillars, pillars that were used to create music. We spent an unexpected amount of time experimenting with our music composition skills on the pillars.

The other temple had intricate carvings depicting stories of mythology and history. The stories were inscribed in words on the wall in the Kannada language. After exploring and photographing the temples in the scorching heat we went to the riverside to relax and enjoy the breeze.  

After spending an hour by now we walked towards the King's balance,  followed by the other side of the Tungabhadra river. The experience was magical and I could just stay there the whole day if I had time.

Anjaneya hills and the Monkey temple

The Anjaneya Hills holds a significant place in Hindu mythology. Believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman, a Hindu deity who helped Ram in his battle against the Ravan.

At the top of the hill stands the Hanuman temple also known as monkey temple. The flight of stairs along the hill leading to the temple is completely shaded and one has to leave their shoes behind when they visit.

Believers visit the temple to seek blessings of Lord Hanuman while nature lovers undertake the journey to see the most beautiful sunset.

We stopped by it but were too hungry to embark on this hike. Probably you'd be too. Don't worry you can come back here the next day for a hike before you depart from Hampi.

Hippie Island

From here you can head to the Hampi island, also called Hippie island. The place earns its name owing to a large number of Goa-style shacks and the laid-back lifestyle in the region.

Most backpackers choose to stay in this part of Hampi, in small huts at a ridiculously low price. The road to Hippie island is not ideal for driving hence it is advisable to hire a tuk-tuk or a bicycle if you visit it in the evening.

The Hippie Island didn't look too special in the afternoon. Of course, there were some interesting artifacts and cool dresses on sale out there. We had lunch at one of the shacks here and headed to our next stop.

Hippie island is the favorite spot for foreign tourists. It comes alive at night when live music bars open up, and people gather for a bonfire.

Though Hampi has a good tourism infrastructure, it takes time to find your own way in the mesh.

If you are travelling with family and are not accustomed with Karnataka, I recommend a guided tour with cab service to explore Hampi .

Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary

While Hampi is famous for the rocky landscape and heritage monuments, it is has a surprise hidden for wildlife lovers too.

The Daroji Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the endangered sloth bear among other species like peafowls, mongoose, etc. However, there are a few points to note before you visit-

• There is no organized safari, the entry fee allows you to enter the forest and explore it on your own.
• There is no jeep or car rental service here, so you need to hire a car from Hampi.
• Entry Fee is quite expensive at Rs. 250/- per person
• No extra fee for the car, but you are not allowed to enter the forest without a car.
• There are no toilet or drinking water facilities here.
• You need to climb a watchtower which is not disability-friendly.
• Best time to see a bear is after 3 pm but you should have at least 2 hours. 

Four kilometers from the main entrance lies the watchtower, where you need to park the car and climb up. This is where you are supposed to take out your binoculars and high-zoom cameras and start looking for sloth bears. The forest is dense and the black bear is difficult to spot.

We stayed there for about 30 minutes and returned without seeing a glimpse of the animal. Patience is the key to watching wildlife, that's something we learned on our six-hour Bandipur tiger safari . However, we wanted to return for the coracle-ride, hence we had to leave by 5:00 pm.

If you have only 1 day in Hampi, just skip Daroji National Park and Hippie island.

Coracle Ride in the Tungabhadra, Hampi

The coracle ride is one of the least advertised, yet most amazing attractions in Hampi. We parked for free near the Virupaksha temple and walked towards the Tungabhadra river like we did the previous day.

There were no signboards, so we had to keep asking locals for guidance.

Well, this is where prebooking a tour helps elevate your travel experiences. Many people skip this unforgettable adventure simply because they are lost and return frustrated.

Well, we didn't plan it out so well that time, but luckily, we managed.

We walked into a cave that descended into the Tungabhadra basin. This is where the round-shaped boats were waiting to take us on a memorable tour.  

You need to haggle here. Unless you have a prebooked tour, the locals quote prices on the basis of demand. The four of us could negotiate a 30-minute coracle ride at Rs.1000 in total.

The sailor showed us some of the floating temples and precarious rocks on both sides of the river.

The tour ended with few rounds of spinning in the river. I must say it was a thousand bucks well-spent.

Virupaksha Temple

Our last stop of the day was the Virupaksha temple, one of the oldest active temples in India. It was created in the 7th century, after which it was enhanced during the Chalukya era and followed by the Vijayanagara era.

The intricate carvings on the well-maintained temple make it difficult to believe that it is so old. This grand shrine is a must-visit place in Hampi and one of the monuments that were awarded the status of UNESCO world heritage site. Unlike many active shrines, there is no specific dress code for entering the temple.

The temple is also famous for a small slit in the wall which exhibits a pin-hole camera effect in the day. When the sunrays pass through it creating an inverted image of the main tower.

Day 3 of 3: Hampi trip from Bangalore

The last day we checked out of the hotel at 9:15 am. We wanted to visit the Zenana enclosure before we set off on our way back through route 2.

Zenana enclosure  

The name Zenana suggests that it was a secluded area for royal women, a harem. The most notable structure here is the Lotus Mahal . It looks refreshingly different from the usual architecture of the Hampi group of monuments. This used to be the social hangout area for the royal ladies. Unlike most other monuments of Hampi, it is made of limestone and bricks.

The Zenana enclosure, unlike the other to “enclosures” we visited before, is indeed enclosed by high walls. The area within is well maintained with lawns and large trees and a map of the area to help you out. Unlike the Royal enclosure, there are security officers here, probably the reason why we didn't notice the acts of vandalism by tourists that we saw in the former.

Some of the other prominent structures here are the basement of the queen's palace , the guard's quarter and the beautiful elephant stables . The design of the elephant stables strangely sync with the lotus temple.

Many archaeologists differ from the view that the Zenana enclosure was a harem at all. The proximity to elephant stable and guard's quarter, according to them suggests that this area was used for military purposes.

The proponents of the harem theory claim that the guards' quarter was for the eunuch guards to protect the royal women.

We had to pay Rs.40 entrance ticket again since our previous ticket was valid for just 1 day. However, we didn't mind because just the Zenana enclosure alone was worth the money spent.

Hampi is not just an outstanding must-visit place in India, it is one of the cheapest places to explore.

The only exception is probably the Daroji wildlife sanctuary, which didn't really justify the value of the entrance fee. We departed for Hampi with the hope of returning soon.

How to reach from Bangalore to Hampi?

Hampi is just 350 km from Bangalore, and you can reach via train, bus or by car. The train is the most preferred means because they are cheap and comfortable. However, given the high demand, the trains in India need to be booked in advance.

Buses are easier to book because of their availability. There are a number of private Volvo buses that you can book from Bangalore to Hampi within the budget range of Rs. 500 -Rs.800.

Driving Route for Bangalore to Hampi Road Trip:

This was our choice of conveyance from Bangalore to Hampi. We started late, at around 8:00 am from our home. There are two driving routes from Bangalore to Hampi. The shortest one is via NH 48 (345 km) and the slightly longer one is via the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway (365 km).

We took the shortest route on our way to Hampi and the second route back. I think the second (longer) route is much better for driving. The best thing is that you can stop at Veerabhadra temple of Lepakshi in the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway route. It is also another wonder of the Vijayanagar era.

Where to stay in Hampi?

There is a plethora of options to stay in Hampi, a backpacker's paradise. There are guesthouses in Hippie Island at economical rates. I would recommend staying in the Hampi town, close to the Hampi Bazaar, where you can see most of the heritage group of monuments.

We stayed at Clarks Inn Hampi . At around Rs.2500 per night including breakfast we got an indoor swimming pool, gym, play zone, and amazing interiors.

How many days are enough for Hampi?

You can explore the best of Hampi in three days. If you are short on time you can still condense it into a 2-day, 1-night itinerary.

However, Hampi is also an amazing place for slow travel. Many travelers come and stay here for weeks and months enjoying the slow life, bouldering, swimming and exploring the nearby heritage sites like Badami and Aihole.

What is the best time to visit Hampi?

Hampi is usually hot and dry almost throughout the year. Despite that tourist of all kind throng to Hampi for everything it has to offer.

However, according to me the best time to visit Hampi is in the monsoon when the light showers bring down the temperature. In fact, it is one of the best places to visit in monsoon in India.

How safe is Hampi for solo women travelers?

I found Hampi very safe for women, just like most of Karnataka. Some places near Tungabhadra are quite desolate. I would advise exercising the minimum caution that you would do anywhere else.

What to wear in Hampi?

I have seen women in shorts and tank-tops and saris alike. There are not many restrictions on what to wear even inside the temples. Although I prefer comfortable traditional attires that suits the nature of the place.

I really enjoyed reading about Hamp, it looks like an open museum with all the temples and incredible structures. I had the chance to visit it in several occasions while I was in India but something always came up. When I come back to India, Hampi is definitely on the top of my list. I saw some amazing photos of the panoramic view of the Bazaar and it looked magical! I would love to experience this someday.

I was not familiar with Hampi until I read your post. I love touring historical sites when I travel, so I know I would enjoy seeing and learning all about Hampi and the surrounding area. The name Hippie Island gave me a chuckle.

I really enjoyed your article and photos. The Queens Palace is impressive. The road trip would be a definite challenge depending which way you travelled. All roads in India seem to be like this, that makes it more of a fun adventure.

The roads in south India are usually very good, except these small challenges. That’s why I described the alternate route through Lepakshi. That will be a safe and amazing drive.

What a fascinating place. To know that the craton exists due to changes from volcanic movements from tens of millions of years ago is hard for the mere mortal to really comprehend. The history behind this place is amazing and the museums, temples and ruins looks beautiful. Those rows and rows of columns that ends with the temple is gorgeous and reminds me so much of Angkor.

Hampi is a place that we are in love with. Even three visits have not satiated our appetite to soak in the history. We look forward to getting there again at the earliest. I like your term for Hampi, “3-D History Book”, it is so apt.

When I lived in Bengaluru for more than 7 years, never I had visited this beautiful UNESCO-listed place. Now I have made sure when I go to the South, I would surely have to visit Hampi. It is indeed an 3D-history book. I find a strong similarity of this kingdom complex with Angkor. The ruins look magnificent. I was amazed by the Queens Palace – such rich architecture and history. Wow that is some incredible history there. I love how even looking at the photos some of the places look so incredibly large and full of life. My favorite places to visit are definitely temples, you guys found some great ruins to check out.

Hampi was one of my favorite places in India, indeed a 3d history. I enjoyed the calm river, the bazar and the baths ruins were impressive. I wish to come back one day and roam between the temples. ANd so many monkeys there! I wold definately take more days there the next time.

This is a really good guide to a really rich historical site. Hopefully the archaeologists can uncover enough and maybe virtually reconstruct the buildings. An empire that prosperous from a stoneworking culture must have had incredible structures. This kingdom would have coincided with India’s early Hindu influence in Southeast Asia.

With everything Seattle has to offer, it can be hard to imagine wanting to get out of the city for even just an hour or two.

Museums can be saved for rainy days, and it would be a shame to spend sunshine hours in craft breweries when there’s such gorgeous scenery to enjoy beyond the city limits. 

Whether you need a break from the tourist crowds and bustle of downtown , are looking for a serious hike , or have a pup threatening all the zoomies after being dragged to yet another farmers market, there are plenty of opportunities to get out of Seattle for the day.  In fact, some of the most breathtaking scenery, charming towns and picturesque back roads in Washington state lie within an easy drive or ferry ride out of the city. Here are some of our favorite day trips from Seattle.

1. Mt Rainier National Park

Travel time: 2 hours

The drive – about two hours, depending on the route and traffic conditions – makes this a bit of an investment for a day trip, but you can’t be this close to one of the most impressive mountains in the United S tates and not go see it.

The views are spectacular, whether it's a sunny spring day with wildflowers in bloom, a moody, cloudy afternoon, or a snowy winter’s day. 

You could easily spend weeks hiking in the Mt Rainier area (permits permitting), but you can develop a healthy appreciation for the place through any of the several day hikes from Paradise , which is home to the relaxing Paradise Inn and a visitor center. 

Paradise also makes for a fun Seattle day trip during the winter because it's one of the most popular areas in the park for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. It's also the only area in the park that allows sledding. Bring good shoes, warm clothes and a camera. Try to visit midweek to avoid crowds.

How to get to Mt Rainier National Park from Seattle:  The park has year-round access via the Nisqually Entrance, just under 90 miles and an almost two-hour drive from Seattle along SR-706. If you use GPS, use the address 39000 State Route 706 E, Ashford, WA 98304, or you’ll otherwise be taken to the park headquarters in Ashford.

From the Nisqually Entrance, it’s another 29 miles via Longmire to the Henry M Jackson Visitor Center in Paradise, where you can find parking and several trailheads. Note that in winter, the road between Longmire and Paradise is closed at night.

If your idea of a successful day trip to Mt Rainier involves hiking and biking, the Carbon River Entrance is a little over 60 miles – nearly 1½ hours – along SR-165. No cars are allowed beyond this entrance, only pedestrians and cyclists. 

You can also enter the park on its east side during the summer. It’s just under 82 miles – 1¾ hours – from Seattle to the White River Entrance via SR-167 and SR-410. From there, it’s about 18 miles, or half an hour’s drive, via SR-123 to Ohanapecosh . There are no public transit connections from Seattle to the park.

2. Leavenworth

Travel time: 2 hours 30 minutes

Adorable and unashamedly touristy Leavenworth has oodles of charm all by itself, but the imitation-Bavarian town’s idyllic wilderness setting is what really puts it over the top. Grab a beer and some brats at München Haus , then choose your adventure: the hiking, rafting and rock climbing here are all fantastic. 

Leavenworth is the gateway to the Wenatchee River and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness , where you’ll find some of the best hiking in the state, including several easily accessible day hikes.

How to get to Leavenworth from Seattle:  The 117-mile drive east along US Hwy 2 via Monroe, through the Cascades and over Stevens Pass, is truly spectacular. It takes under 2½ hours, but you’ll want to stop often for photo ops.

The route via the Snoqualmie Pass along the I-90 takes about the same time, even though it stretches over 135 miles. Several bus companies serve the route between Seattle and Leavenworth, or you can take the Amtrak train, although the three to four-hour bus journey makes it less feasible for a day trip.

3. Bainbridge Island

Travel time: 1 hour

Bainbridge Island is a favorite vacation destination for Seattleites and visitors from further afield, but the island is close enough to the city that it contains a healthy full-time population, many of whom commute to Seattle by ferry.

It’s the quickest and easiest way to get out on the water from the big city, and the ride over provides stunning views of both Seattle and the Sound. Lazily stroll around, tour some waterfront taverns like Doc’s Marina Grill , taste wines and maybe rent a bike and cycle around the invitingly flat countryside.

As far as family day trips from Seattle go, it doesn’t get much easier than this; the ferry ride is short enough that kids won’t get bored, and once they’re on the island, they’ll love exploring the Kids Discovery Museum .

Lively pubs and great Washington wines are the order of the day on Bainbridge. The island doesn’t stay up very late, but you won’t go thirsty when it comes to happy hour or leisurely cocktails in the evening.  Bainbridge Vineyards is a quaint and certified organic winemaker about 5 miles from the Bainbridge ferry terminal off Hwy 305 – perfect for a bike ride on a sunny day.

How to get to Bainbridge Island from Seattle:  Washington State Ferries run several times a day from Pier 52 in Seattle. The crossing takes about 35 minutes.

4. Bellingham

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Bellingham is underrated as a fun town for nightlife, especially if you’re into craft beer. Try the Kölsch at Chuckanut Brewery , a Bellingham Blonde ale at Boundary Bay and a Cosmic Dreams IPA at Aslan Depot , a historic bus and streetcar station renovated to look and feel like a cozy old English parlor.

If you like your adult beverages with a side of culture, start with a visit to the Whatcom Museum , a three-building collection of local and regional art, culture and history.

You can also wander the well-preserved Fairhaven neighborhood with its shops, restaurants and lovely bookstore, Village Books . Alternatively, drive 15 miles north to the traditionally Dutch town of Lynden, which has a pioneer history museum , bakery and historic hotel .

To stretch this day trip a little, opt for scenic Chuckanut Drive on the way there or back. This byway hugs the coastline between Bellingham and Mt Vernon, with opportunities to stop for hiking in Larrabee State Park and oyster-eating at the Oyster Bar in Bow along the way.

How to get to Bellingham from Seattle:  Head north on I-5 for about 90 miles (1½ hours) to Bellingham. For the more scenic Chuckanut Drive (SR-11) option, take exit 231 off I-5 just north of Mt Vernon. This route is about the same distance but adds around 15 minutes to the drive – if you don’t stop to admire the scenery.

5. Victoria, Canada

Travel time: 3 hours

At around a 2¾-hour ride on the fast ferry, Victoria stretches the definition of a "day trip," but the British Columbia provincial capital is worth the effort if you remember to bring your valid passport and meet the requirements for entry into Canada . 

With double-decker buses, afternoon tea, homes that look like castles and pubs with names such as the Sticky Wicket and the Penny Farthing , Victoria has long traded on its British affiliations. 

But while the fish and chips remain first class, and summer cricket games still enliven Beacon Hill Park , the days when Victoria was more British than Britain are long gone. In Victoria 2.0, the food culture embraces fusion, the beer leans toward craft brews and the abundance of bicycles resembles  the Netherlands  more than England .

Compared to the glassy skyscrapers of Seattle, Victoria is more laid-back and low-rise. On balmy summer days, a distinct holiday atmosphere takes over as people pile off the ferries to escape the mayhem of the mainland and forget their work. Sure, Victoria might have become trendier and more sophisticated in recent years, but in pace and essence it remains comfortingly old-fashioned.

How to get to Victoria from Seattle:  Victoria Clipper runs a passenger-only, high-speed catamaran from Pier 69 in downtown Seattle to Victoria’s Inner Harbor. There’s one round-trip a day; check the website for departure times as these may vary according to season.

6. Whidbey Island

Travel time: 1 hour 10 minutes

Whidbey Island is an idyllic emerald escape beloved by stressed-out Seattleites. At 41 miles, Whidbey is the longest island on the US West Coast. While it’s not as detached or nonconformist as the San Juans (a bridge connects it to adjacent Fidalgo Island at its northernmost point), life is certainly slower, quieter and more pastoral here. 

Having six state parks is a bonus. There is also a plethora of B&Bs, two historic fishing villages (Langley and Coupeville), famously tasty mussels and a thriving community of artists and artisans. Also on the island is the US Naval Air Station that dominates Oak Harbor. 

Whidbey is a particularly desirable day trip during the fall harvest: grapes, apples and pumpkins abound, as do cider and pumpkin beer. The season also brings wild mushroom foraging tours, which, unless you’re an expert, are best to join if you want to pick some. In the words of Terry Pratchett, “All fungi are edible. Some fungi are only edible once.”

Emerging from Fidalgo Island's flat pastures, the precipitous Deception Pass cliffs are overlooked by a famous bridge made all the more dramatic by the churning, angry water below. The bridge has two steel arches spanning Canoe Pass and Deception Pass, joined by a central support on Pass Island. Built during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), it was considered an engineering feat in its day. The 5.5-sq-mile park also spans the channel, with facilities on the north and south flanks of the passage.

How to get to Whidbey Island from Seattle: You'll need a car and to take a ferry ride. Take I-5 north and SR-525 from Seattle to Mukilteo; depending on the route and traffic conditions, this trip will be around 40 to 50 minutes. Washington State Ferries run 20-minute trips between Mukilteo and Clinton throughout the day. The Sound Transit train on the Sounder North N-line isn’t a good choice for a day trip since it departs from Seattle twice in the late afternoon and returns from Everett twice in the early morning.

7. La Conner

Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes

A small town with a surprising number of things to see and do, La Conner is practically made for a day trip. It has a compact, walkable center lined with shops, pubs and restaurants, a spring tulip festival that shows off its pastoral surroundings and a top-notch art museum in the heart of town. 

Its position alongside the lazy Swinomish Channel adds a cool maritime feel. And at around a 1¼-hour drive, it’s one of those short trips from Seattle that you can do without spending most of your day on the road.

Arguably the best time to visit La Conner is in April when the tulip fields around town paint themselves in bands of vivid purples, reds and yellows. Weekend traffic can be discouraging at this time, but the blooms are worth it.

Once you’ve had your fill of flowers, wander downtown toward the tiny marina. Stop in and browse at Handmade La Conner , where artisans in a back-room workshop make all the coffee mugs, textiles, fancy soaps and letterpress cards on offer. Be sure to save time for an exploration of the Museum of Northwest Art , which has an outstanding collection of regional paintings and sculptures and mounts several temporary exhibits each year.

How to get to La Conner from Seattle: From Seattle, take I-5 north about 55 miles to exit 221, then follow signs another 10 miles west along Fir Island Rd to La Conner. There are no bus or train services to La Conner.

8. San Juan Islands

Travel time: 3 to 4 hours

The sleepy San Juans exist in striking contrast with Seattle’s sensory overload, and they’re easier to reach than you might think (though if you can spare the time, an overnight stay is even better than a day trip). 

It may be nearly a four-hour ferry ride from Seattle to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, but the voyage itself is one of the highlights – you can make the trip as part of a whale-watching tour, but it’s a gorgeous ride even without the whale element. 

On arrival, your entertainment options include mellow bicycling, paddling around in a kayak, eating decadent, locally sourced meals from restaurants like Doe Bay Café , and just hanging out. This day trip is also fantastic to make with your dog; there are several off-leash dog parks, including San Juan Islands Sculpture Park .

How to get to the San Juan Islands from Seattle:  From mid-April to mid-October, the scenic San Juan Clipper goes directly to Friday Harbor from the Seattle waterfront’s Pier 69 in 3¾ hours.

Or you can drive the 85 miles or so to Anacortes – it should take a maximum of two hours, depending on the route and traffic conditions – and hop a Washington State Ferry to Lopez Island (45 minutes), Shaw Island (55 minutes), Orcas Island (a little over an hour) or San Juan Island (an hour). Schedules vary by season, so check the WSF website for the latest. 

Note that for the San Juan Clipper, any pets need to be in a carrier, and you will need to book the trip in advance. For the Washington State Ferry, passengers can bring their leashed dogs into the exterior passenger areas, including the shelter decks.

In Europe's Schengen area , your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of your entry. At present, the Schengen area includes most European Union (EU) countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland.

If you are transiting through Canada or the United Kingdom (UK) enroute to the Schengen area : your passport must be valid for at least six months, even though Canada and the UK do not themselves have the six-month rule. If your passport will expire within six months, airlines may not let you board your onward flight to Europe.

Traveling in Europe

If you plan to travel in Europe, you need to know about the Schengen Borders Agreement, which allows you to move freely within a number of countries without border checks. Tourists, exchange students, and people visiting for business from certain countries, like the United States, can travel in the Schengen area for up to 90 days. The Schengen area includes most EU countries, except for Cyprus and Ireland. It also includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Before you travel to the Schengen area, we recommend you do the following:

• Check the expiration date on your passport book carefully before traveling to Europe. Ensure your passport book is valid for at least six months when you enter the Schengen area. This is especially important for minors under age 16 as their passports are only valid for five years. In contrast, U.S. citizen adults aged 16 and older receive passports that are valid for 10 years.
• Always carry your passport book with you when traveling to another country in the Schengen area. Even if there is no border check at that time, officials may reinstate border controls without notice.
• Be prepared to explain your purpose of travel.
• Be prepared to provide proof of sufficient financial resources for the visit.
• Comply with other entry requirements for each country you will visit or transit.

• Refused boarding by the airline at your point of origin or while transferring planes.
• Denied entry when you arrive in the Schengen area, regardless of how long you will stay.

An immigration official will determine if you qualify for visa-free entry to the Schengen area when you first cross any external Schengen border. You will have to present your passport at that time. The officer may deny your entry if you do not qualify.

You should also check passport validity requirements if traveling onward from the Schengen area to a country outside the Schengen area. You can find this information in our Country Information pages.

HOW LONG CAN I REMAIN?

• With a valid U.S. passport book, you can stay up to 90 days in the Schengen area for tourism or business during any 180-day period. You must wait an additional 90 days before applying to re-enter the Schengen area.
• If you plan to stay in the Schengen area longer than three months, contact the embassy of the country where you plan to spend the majority of your time and apply for a visa.

Countries in the Schengen area may reinstate temporary internal or external border control without notice. U.S. citizens should carry their U.S. passport book at all times when entering or leaving the Schengen area. They should also bring it when traveling between Schengen countries.

5 St. Philomena's Cathedral

At a distance of 2.5 km from Mysore Railway Station & 1 km from KSRTC Bus Station, St. Philomena's Church is a Catholic Church built in honor of St. Philomena in the Diocese of Mysore, India. Designed by the Reverend Rene Feuge, it was constructed in 1956 in a Neo Gothic style and its architecture was inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. The church is dedicated to 3rd century saint Philomena who was the daughter of the monarch of a small state in Greece. Her parents were childless for several years. They prayed Jesus to bless them with a child and the next year Philomena was born to them. Even in her childhood Philomena showed signs of piety. The lake has the shape of India's map. The lake is spread across an area of 13 acres with a maximum depth of 6.5 m. The Panamaram stream, one of the main tributaries of the Kabani River, originates from Pookote Lake. The lake has an abundance of blue lotus and freshwater fishes. Pethia pookodensis is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds, and flies. At a distance of 16 km from Kalpetta & 4 km from Pookote Lake, Lakkidi is small hill station situated at the highest point in the Wayanad district. Located at an altitude of about 700 m, Lakkidi gets about 600 cm rainfall annually, making it one of the highest rainfall regions in Kerala and also one of the prime Wayanad tourist places to visit. Often referred as 'the gateway of Wayanad', Lakkidi is located at the crest of the serpentine Thamarassery ghat pass, which features over 9 hairpin curves that start at Adivaram (downhill). The 12 km long ghat road from Adivaram to Lakkidi passing through thick forest leaves a wonderful experience. The lush green hills, gorges and streams on both sides of the passage up the hill are breathtaking sights to the visitors. At a distance of 11 km from Sulthan Bathery & 5 km from Edakkal Caves, 22 km from Kalpetta, Wayanad Heritage Museum is located in Ambalavayal village. This is one of the best heritage museums in Kerala. The museum houses fascinating items from tribal communities dating back to the second century AD. It has a rare collection of several ancient instruments & tribal artifacts like jewellery, hunting and fishing weapons, farming instruments, a fine collection of 14th - 16th century sculptures, etc. Ancient terra cottas, stone weapons and local art are also on display at the museum. A series of pictorial rock edicts referred to as Hero Stones, memorialize a bygone age of warriors. There is a fine figure of the Goddess of fertility, Urvara, also displayed here. Most of the artifacts are collected from the Wayanad and surrounding regions. King Charles travels to mark D-Day anniversary while Prince William takes greater role

Britain’s King Charles III embarked on his first overseas trip since being diagnosed with cancer, traveling across the English Channel for commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the 1944 D-Day Landings in Normandy.

Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed on five stretches of the German-occupied Normandy coastline on June 6, 1944. Operation Overlord – as D-Day was codenamed – remains, to this day, the largest amphibious invasion in history, and was a crucial turning point in defeating the Nazis in World War II.

Omaha Beach was the deadliest of the landing sites as German forces were entrenched in fortified cliff positions above allowing them to fire on the first waves of US soldiers as they reached the shore.

Nearly 10,000 Allied troops were killed or wounded on D-Day. Exact figures of German casualties on the day are not known, however it has been estimated to be between 4,000 and 9,000 service personnel.

On Thursday morning, King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the UK Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion’s commemorative event at the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer. Charles is patron of both the Royal British Legion and Normandy Memorial Trust.

The King, wearing his Field Marshal No 4 Tropical Service dress uniform with medals and decorations, urged allies to “recall lessons that come to us again and again,” while addressing D-Day veterans.

“How fortunate we were and the entire free world that a generation of men and women in the United Kingdom and other Allied nations did not flinch when the moment came to face that test,” Charles said, adding that his grandfather, King George VI, described the events of D-Day as “the supreme test.”

Charles reflected on the qualities of the armed forces involved, saying they “carried out their duty with a humbling sense of resolve and determination.”

He also used the speech to reflect on the past through the lens of the present, saying: “We recall the lesson that comes to us again and again across the decades. Three nations must stand together to oppose tyranny.”

Charles also spoke in French, thanking the people of France for their “warmth” and “generosity” towards D-Day veterans, which he said is the “most moving and memorable part of these anniversaries.”

While the King traveled to France for commemorations, he did not join world leaders - including Macron and his US counterpart Joe Biden – later Thursday as they gather at Omaha Beach to honor troops for their bravery and sacrifice eight decades ago. Instead, Prince William represented Britain’s royal family at the international ceremony at Omaha Beach.

The optics of seeing the Prince of Wales instead of his father will not have been be lost on those within the royal household, as well as royal-watchers. Nonetheless, CNN understands that it wasn’t a deliberate orchestration. William, 41, has deputized for Charles before, such as when he traveled to Kuwait for the funeral of Emir Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah in December.

However, seeing the future monarch in the company of other heads of state was a powerful visual and speaks to the longer transition which will prepare the public for King William V’s reign.

King Charles also only recently returned to public engagements after getting the green light from his doctors who were “encouraged” by his progress.

He is continuing to receive treatment and each engagement the 75-year-old sovereign carries out is being reviewed and adapted where necessary by his medical team to ensure his continued recovery.

That simple reason of following medical advice appears to be behind the King’s absence at the international commemoration on Thursday afternoon. A royal source told CNN that it was considered a step too far at this stage but that the monarch was delighted the Prince of Wales was representing the nation.

William has been an ever-present fixture as the royal family marked the D-Day anniversary in recent days. Earlier Thursday, the heir to the British throne paid tribute at the Canadian commemorative ceremony at the Juno Beach Centre in Courseulles-Sur-Mer, where he joined veterans as well as current serving personnel before making a speech and laying a wreath.

A day earlier, William had joined Charles and Camilla at the UK’s national commemorative event in Portsmouth. The city on England’s south coast was one of the places Allied troops sailed from before the Normandy landings.

William paid tribute to veterans who “came from across our nation and from all walks of life to join in the fight against tyranny. Many of those that took up arms had never seen combat before, some were still only in their teens.”

Meanwhile, in his own moving speech, King Charles told crowds that “the stories of courage, resilience and solidarity” must not be forgotten and that they are a reminder “of what we owe to that great wartime generation.”

Charles added: “It is our duty to ensure that we, and future generations, do not forget their service and their sacrifice.”
