Troy University awarded passport grant to aid in study abroad opportunities

News  | April 15, 2024

Thanks to IIE, up to 25 TROY students will be eligible for their first passport.

Thanks to IIE, up to 25 TROY students will be eligible for their first passport.

Troy University is one of 51 institutions selected by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive an  IIE American Passport Project  grant that will enable up to 25 TROY students to obtain their first U.S. passport and open the pathway to study abroad.

The American Passport Project seeks to reach diverse student populations and institutions that serve students who identify within demographics underrepresented in U.S. study abroad or those who often do not obtain a U.S. passport. To date, the program has supported 176 higher education institutions in 41 states since its inception in 2021.

To be eligible for the Project, students will need to be nominated to and approved by IIE. Sarah McKenzie, Study Abroad Director, said TROY officials will start nominating from eligible  TRIO  students, to include first-generation college students, racial/ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, students with demonstrated financial need and students who have never traveled abroad.

“We’re proud to be awarded an IIE Passport Project grant to support 25 Pell-eligible students to get their U.S. passports and open the path to study abroad,” she said. “International education strengthens critical skills students will need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world, as well as develop lifelong friendships and participate in meaningful experiences that could shape the trajectory of their lives.”

Securing an IIE Passport grant is the newest in a string of efforts to make studying abroad accessible for as many TROY students as possible. The  Chancellor’s Award for Global Competitiveness  (CAGC) aims to foster international awareness and better assimilation of Troy University students in the worldwide work place while providing the financial assistance to make that goal a reality. Over the last several years, the scholarship has grown from $500 to the current $1,250. Students are also able to apply for the CAGC each academic year.

“The Chancellor and his administration want to make it as easy as possible and incentivize students to go,” McKenzie said. “On average, most of our trips cost around $3,500, so $1,250 knocks off a third of that cost. It still sounds like a lot, but no one is going to give you that opportunity at that price once you leave TROY. Chancellor Hawkins wants everyone to have the opportunity to go if they want to.”

For more information on being nominated for the Passport Project or on studying abroad, contact McKenzie at  [email protected]  or call 334-808-6128.

The IIE American Passport Project represents IIE’s commitment to creating access to international education opportunities and enabling equity by removing a financial barrier, thereby increasing the diversity and inclusion of students studying abroad. The program prioritizes students early in their higher education experience to allow them ample time to go through the passport application and study abroad planning process with advising and support from the awarded institutions. Through the IIE American Passport Project, IIE aims to grant 10,000 U.S. students their passports by the end of this decade.

The  Institute of International Education  is the leader in designing and implementing international education strategies and program services. IIE works with governments, policymakers, educators and employers across the globe to prepare students and professionals for the global workforce and equip them to solve the increasingly complex challenges facing our interconnected world. With support from donors, the organization also creates initiatives that assist students, scholars and artists whose lives and work are threatened; expand teaching and learning across cultures; and provide opportunities to underserved populations. A not-for-profit organization founded in 1919, IIE has a network of 16 offices and affiliates worldwide and over 1,600 higher education partners.

The  IIENetwork  is IIE’s global membership association supporting the strategic advancement of international education. Through the IIENetwork, IIE shares decades of experience and expertise, generates resources, and leverages knowledge and practices with members who are working to strategize and actualize international education efforts, including building international and academic partnerships, recruiting international students, and advocating for study abroad and student mobility.

Media coverage and word of mouth extends DAAP art exhibit to April 30

Open to the public, display includes a rare painting on loan from anonymous cincinnati resident.

Popularity surrounding the art exhibit "Rediscovering Catharina van Hemessen’s 'Scourging of Christ': Women Artists, Patrons and Rulers in Renaissance Europe" at UC’s College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) Library has extended the exhibit to April 30.

The exhibit, which delves into the triumphs and struggles of women artists, art collectors and rulers during the Renaissance era, garnered media attention on WVXU’s Cincinnati Edition  and  Cincinnati.com .

The exhibit opened in March, during Women's History Month, and was originally set to end April 8.

“I have heard from a number of people that they wish to see the exhibit now,” says Christopher Platts, the exhibit's co-curator and assistant professor of art history at DAAP. He estimates that more than 500 people have viewed the exhibit to date.

While the exhibition focuses on Hemessen’s signed painting of Christ's Passion from 1556 and her patron, Mary Hungary, regent of the Netherlands, it also features paintings, prints, rare books and illuminated manuscripts, shedding light on the significant roles women played in the European Renaissance between 1400 and 1600.

Hemessen was the most famous woman artist of the Northern Renaissance, says Platts, adding that it is on loan from an anonymous local collector. To Platts' knowledge, the painting has only been on public display three times, including the UC exhibit, over the last 50 to 75 years, he says.

After April 30 the painting goes back to its home somewhere in Cincinnati.

More information is available on the  DAAP Library page .

  • University International Travel Policy
  • Global Engagement
  • Policies and Procedures

Scope of Policy

The University International Travel Policy governs all international travel sponsored or co-sponsored by the University. This includes undergraduate, graduate, professional degree or certificate programs, or autonomous programs arranged by a campus, a school, the College, or a department.

SCU will support university-sponsored international travel to destinations with:

  • U.S. Department of State (DOS) Travel Advisories Level 1 and Level 2 and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Travel Health Notices Level 1 & 2  AND
  • Where there is no obvious risk to a participant’s health, safety, or to the likelihood of being able to carry out the goals of the international travel successfully
  • For student travel, we may also give consideration to infrastructure for student support including, but not limited to: University staffing, campus health centers, program center staffing, onsite local protocols and support for health, safety or immigration that may impact travel.
  • University-Sponsored travel is not supported to locations with an overall DOS Travel Advisory Level 3 or Level 4 unless the Provost grants an exception. Certain areas within countries with an overall advisory Level 1 or Level 2 may be designated Level 3 or Level 4, and neither travel nor transit through, such as stopover, may occur in these destinations.

University-Sponsored International Travel

University-sponsored international travel includes individual faculty/staff travel funded by or supported through resources, such as employee time, while employed by SCU. All university-sponsored travel requires approval. Examples of university-sponsored international travel include: Credit-bearing and non-credit bearing student experiences, such as study abroad programs; internships; field studies; service learning; research; volunteer or work programs; fellowships; and/or faculty/staff professional development activities travel with boards, alumni, or people external to the University that is organized and/or funded by Santa Clara University.

Travel Not Sponsored by the University

Non-university-sponsored international travel  has no formal affiliation with Santa Clara University.  Examples include:  personal travel; vacation; programs or internships abroad that students pursue independent of SCU.

Approval of International Travel

The Associate Provost for International Programs grants approval for University-Sponsored international travel. The Associate Provost may engage the Travel Policy Advisory Committee (TPAC) in their decision. All student travel requires an SCU faculty/staff member to fulfill the role and responsibilities of SCU Program Coordinator which are defined in the travel procedures, and approval is contingent upon continual monitoring of current global and in-country health and safety conditions up to and through the official dates of the university program, initiative, or sponsored travel.

Prior approval of University-sponsored travel may be rescinded at any time if travel involves destinations in which:

  • Current health and safety conditions pose unusual or significant risks; OR
  • The DOS issues a Travel Advisory Level 3 or Level 4; OR
  • The CDC or WHO issues a travel advisory; OR
  • U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposes restrictions; OR
  • The University's Travel Accident/Security Insurance policy excludes coverage;  OR
  • There is a failure of the SCU Program Coordinator to monitor in-country health and safety conditions and/or fulfill their role and responsibilities

Assessing Risk

When assessing the health and safety conditions for existing and potential education abroad opportunities, in addition to other sources of evidence of potential risk to participants, Santa Clara University gives primary consideration to Travel Advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State. In addition to DOS Travel Advisories, the University gives consideration to health and safety risks articulated by the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and also locations that are excluded from the University's Travel Accident/Security Insurance policy.
