Seattle Cruise Guide
Seattle is one of the biggest hubs for cruises sailing to Alaska. But before sailing off to one of the most scenic places on Earth, it’s worth staying a while in the iconic Emerald City.
The great thing about downtown Seattle is that all of the must-see attractions are within walking distance from one another. Start your day off by grabbing breakfast at one of the many Seattle-based coffee shops. Then take a stroll through Pike Place Market, home to the very first Starbucks ever opened, as well as a wide variety of fresh pastries, seafood, delicious bites, and artisan crafts. Chihuly Garden and Glass is a glasshouse exhibition featuring intricate glass designs that mimic a flower garden. End your day by taking an elevator up to the observation deck of the Space Needle, where you can observe 360-views of the city skyscrapers and the famous Mount Rainier. Before embarking on your cruise, be sure to stop by Ballard Avenue NW to pick up some designer branded goodies and souvenirs to take with you.
When you’re all done, make your way to one of the two cruise ship terminals, Bell Street Pier, or Smith Cove. Many popular cruise lines offer sailings from these terminals, including Carnival, Celebrity, Oceania, Princess, and more, so make your pick and have a relaxing time onboard.

Alaska Cruises from Seattle
Experience the great land on a 7-day alaska inside passage cruise from seattle.
Follow in the footsteps of the Yukon Gold Rush on an Alaska cruise from Seattle to some of the world’s most scenic wonders. With convenient weekend departures and proximity to the Great Land, a cruise to Alaska from Seattle allows you to leave when you want, and spend less time getting there.
Alaska Inside Passage Cruise Ports
When you cruise to Alaska from Seattle, encounter unique ports of call that are rich in history, culture and natural beauty.
- Endicott Arm
- Glacier Bay National Park
- Victoria, B.C.
Endicott Arm is a jewel in Alaska’s crown. This 30-mile waterway is surrounded by cliffs, valleys and dozens of waterfalls. Icebergs and harbor seals decorate the water below while Dawes Glacier soars into the sky above. Revel in the beauty of Mother Nature’s masterpiece and listen closely as the scenery whispers secrets of times long ago during your cruise to Alaska.
When you cruise to Alaska with Princess, sail through one of the most iconic locations in the Great Land — Glacier Bay National Park. Listen to Margerie Glacier’s signature crack and boom rumble across the waves. Bring binoculars and scan both the shore and the waves for wildlife like brown bears and migrating whales while Park Rangers teach you the history and geology of the park.
Juneau is unlike any other city in the United States. With no roads connecting it to the rest of Alaska or North America, it is truly a protected destination. Founded as a gold mining town and now the state’s capital, Juneau has one foot in history and one in the future. Embark on a whale watching tour, or sail past Mendenhall Glacier on an Alaska cruise.
Known for its timber, Ketchikan hosts the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, where athletes throw, race and chop their way to victory. Explore one of the world’s oldest collection of totem poles at the Totem Pole Heritage Center, or stroll along Creek Street. As the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan’s waters make for incredible fishing. Cast your rod into a sea of opportunity on a cruise to Alaska.
Seattle is known as "The Emerald City" thanks to its green forests and lush surroundings. Pike Place Market buzzes with merchants while coffee shops house locals drinking espresso in America's coffee capital. Climb the Space Needle and enjoy the Seattle skyline, or explore the history of Pioneer Square, the city's oldest neighborhood — only when you cruise to Alaska from Seattle.
Once the gateway to Alaska's Gold Rush, Skagway strikes a dramatic image nestled between the water's edge and mountains. Follow in the footsteps of miners with a ride on a scenic train along the famous White Pass route through coastal mountains. During your Alaska cruise, explore the Yukon's pristine wilderness, pan for gold with professionals or meet sled dog puppies in training.
At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure.
Wrangell is a charming and scenic harbor known for its local fishing industry. It is not as bustling as larger ports in Alaska and maintains its historic charm and offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Explore its historic downtown and learn about the local culture and Native heritage while in Wrangell.

Alaska Cruise Experience
We have a 50-year legacy of sharing the best places and experiences with our guests. On an Alaska cruise, unpack once and explore glaciers, wildlife and national parks.
Alaska Glaciers
One of the biggest reasons people visit
Glaciers feel alive. They groan, creak and shudder on their march to the sea, punctuated by the booms and crashes of "white thunder" — a sound that echoes across the water when ice calves into the ocean below. On an Alaska cruise, let us show you Glacier Bay National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier, College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier.
Alaska Wildlife
Untamed, just like Alaska
Alaska is home to a rich array of wildlife, from the famous Big Five animals that live in Denali National Park — grizzly bears, wolves, moose, Dall sheep and caribou — to bald eagles and humpback whales that migrate through the Inside Passage. On a cruise to Alaska, live a nature lover's dream in the land where guests can catch postcard-worthy sights.
Alaska Mountains & National Parks
National treasures
With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Along with Wrangell-St. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.
Alaska excursions
Don't just visit this famous land, live it on Alaska excursions. Rush across the snow on a dog sled with a professional musher, fly fish for salmon in fresh rivers and soar over miles of glacial tundra in a helicopter. Watch migrating humpback whales from the deck of a catamaran or Native craftsman carve a traditional totem pole, and expand your Alaska cruise experience.
Alaska Cruise Onboard Experience
Our award-winning North to Alaska program brings local personalities, culture and cuisine on board and ashore to immerse you in all things Alaska during your cruise to the Great Land.
Alaska Seafood
Fresh and bountiful, like Alaska itself
Alaska's seafood is famous, and we bring the best to you with locally inspired dishes from the state’s best eateries. With Cook My Catch excursions, catch your own salmon or halibut with the help of a local expert, and in the evening our talented chefs will prepare your haul for your dinner — a Princess exclusive. From ship to shore, the best is at your fingertips on our Alaska cruises.
Meet Local Alaskans
Real Alaska from local Alaskans
Alaskans are inviting people who love to share what makes their state unique. Watch lumberjacks in action, learn from Glacier Bay National Park rangers and craft with a Native totem pole carver. Or listen to harrowing Tales from the Deadliest Catch fishermen and climbers who have summited Denali during your Alaska cruise.
Unique Alaska Cruise Experiences
Great experiences from the great land
Travel back in time and pan for gold like a prospector during the Gold Rush. Snuggle sled dog puppies in the ship's Piazza, or see the Northern Lights in the planetarium. At the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge, explore our treehouse and enjoy unmatched views of Denali. Or savor tree-inspired bites at our very own Sappy Hour. The Ultimate 2 Days in Seattle Itinerary
I’m going to cut to the chase: my 2 days in Seattle itinerary is secretly a love letter to this awesome city. I’ve lived here for about 15 years and I love it more and more everyday.
Like San Francisco, Seattle is known as a tech hub. But there’s so much more to The Emerald City.
From the mild weather and gorgeous summers to the incredible food and art, Seattle really has it all no matter what time of year you visit. However, it can be difficult to decide how to spend just two days when you get a ton of search results touting various tourist attractions.
Let me help you cut through the noise and experience Seattle like a local. Here’s how I’d spend my perfect 2 days in Seattle…and what I’d skip.
This post has affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission at no cost to you if you click on them and make a purchase. This is a small way I earn money to support this site. If links aren’t showing up for you , turn off your ad blocking software. Thank you for your support!
2 Days in Seattle Itinerary
Depending on what days you’re traveling, feel free to swap days in this itinerary! Need help customizing your trip? I’m a travel planner and would love to plan your dream itinerary !
Day 1: Explore Downtown, Pioneer Square, & Capitol Hill
If it’s your first time to Seattle, you have to explore the downtown area. Sure, this is where most of the tourist attractions are, but these are places I’ve been to and always recommend locals and visitors alike check out!
Please note that there’s a lot of unhoused people downtown, mostly congregated around 3rd & Pike St and Pike Place Market near the waterfront. This is a sad reality of Seattle, but they’re completely harmless and shouldn’t be a deterrent!
Visit Pike Place Market
website | directions | best for: souvenirs and eats
Even as a local, I love visiting Pike Place Market. I used to work nearby in Downtown Seattle and would sneak to the market to grab food at the places tourists don’t know about. In fact, I’ve been to Pike Place twice in the past month. So no 2 days in Seattle is complete without a visit here!
There are so many hidden gems, but you just have to remember these rules:
- Get there for 9 AM, especially if you’re spending the weekend in Seattle
- Go to the gum wall when vendors are closed and the crowds thin out
- Avoid tourist spots like Beecher’s, the original Starbucks, and Pike Place Chowder. You can get Beecher’s and Pike Place Chowder anywhere, and the original Starbucks is actually the 2nd location.
- Get lost – that’s the fun part!
I have a lot of recommendations of where to go and how to avoid tourists in Pike Place Market. Grab my free self-guided tour of Pike Place Market to get all my insider secrets! If you just care about the eats, check out my guide to the best Pike Place Market restaurants . Here’s one tip: Pike Place Market is home to some of the best restaurants in Seattle with water views .
You can easily spend all day here, but about 3 hours should be enough for a thorough combing of the vendors and enough times to stop at a few different places for eats. Make sure to take in the views of the Olympic Mountains and Elliott Bay from the Marketfront Promenade!
Tours of Pike Place Market
Want a guided tour instead of going it alone? Here are some options:
- Early-Bird Tasting Tour of Pike Place Market
- Pike Place Market Food Tour
- Plant-Based Pike Place Food Tour
- Pike Place Scandalous History Tour
- Seattle Chocolate Tour
- Underground Donut Tour
Check out the Seattle Art Museum
website | directions | best for: contemporary art
I always thought I hated museums, but in my older age I’ve become obsessed with finding the best Pacific Northwest artists . In that discovery I learned that I like museums if they’re contemporary ones, and the Seattle Art Museum fits the bill. It’s also in Downtown Seattle near Pike Place Market so it’s a perfect second stop on your 2 days in Seattle itinerary.
Head to SAM if you are quicker at Pike Place than you thought you’d be. Plan to spend about 1-2 hours here exploring the exhibits. You’ll find everything from paintings to sculptures to installations. Make sure to look up at the ceiling as you enter the lobby!
Pro tips: If you need to drive to SAM, check out this parking deal on Groupon . If you took a long time at the market, skip this attraction and continue to the next!
Walk around the Olympic Sculpture Park
website | directions | best for: water views
One of my favorite ways to spend 24 hours in downtown Seattle is to visit the Seattle Sculpture Park, which is also owned by the Seattle Art Museum. I used to walk home on the 3-mile long Elliott Bay Trail that runs right along the sculptures and water because it offers one of the best views in Seattle .
Keep an eye out for sculptures of all sizes in this 2-level park. You can also walk a bit down Elliott Bay Trail to Myrtle Edwards Park . Sometimes you’ll find seals on the rocks, so keep your eyes out!
Pro tip: Walk down through Pike Place Market to Alaska Way and walk along the waterfront for pretty views of the Puget Sound. You’ll pass the Seattle Aquarium, Great Wheel, Argosy Cruises, and more as you make your way to the sculpture park.
Gawk at Chihuly Glass Museum
website | directions | best for: indoor and outdoor photo opportunities
Dale Chihuly is a famous blown glass artist in Washington. His work is breathtaking…you won’t find little bowls here! Instead you’ll see huge, colorful glass installations at the indoor and outdoor Chihuly Garden and Glass Museum. Plan to spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here gawking at his work.
Nearby attractions to add on or swap in
Since the glass museum is right in Seattle Center, you’ll find some other famous tourist attractions just steps away. If you love museums, you’ll also find the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop) and Pacific Science Center .
Looming above it all is the Space Needle with its glass bottom floor and observation deck looking out onto the Seattle skyline with Mt. Rainier in the distance.
If you want to see any of these attractions, consider getting the Seattle Citypass . It includes admission to the Space Needle, Seattle Aquarium, and your choice of the Chihuly Glass Museum, MoPop, Woodland Park Zoo , or an Argosy Cruise. You can also buy tickets to any of these independently.
I personally think the glass museum is the best attraction out of all of these, but know you have options! If you’re only interested in the Glass Museum and Space Needle, you can buy discounted combo tickets on Groupon or either attractions’ website.
Shop around historic Pioneer Square
website | directions | best for: historic charm and boutiques
Once you’re done exploring Downtown Seattle, if it’s before around 3 PM and you have time, make your way to Pioneer Square. This is the historic city center and is full of beautiful cobblestone streets and brick buildings that were repurposed into boutiques, cafes, and bars.
Spend about 1-2 hours walking around the streets and popping into some of the best gift shops in Seattle and local Seattle urban wineries .
Some of my favorite stops include:
- Locus Wines – A great spot to grab wine flights from a really talented winemaker making affordable Rhone-style wines. They’re some of the best wines in Washington !
- Salumi – Grab charcuterie gifts or ½ a sandwich before they close at 3 pm. Their meatball sub is one of the best I’ve ever had. This spot used to be owned by Mario Batali’s father until he sold it to two women, but they kept the same recipe.
- J. Reinhart Gallery – This is one of my favorite art galleries. She curates modern original art at affordable price points. Make sure to check out one of my favorite Washington artists, Lesley Frenz .
- Smith Tower – If you don’t make it to the Space Needle, this historic building has a bar and observation offering great views of the city, Mt. Rainier, and stadium area. You walk through a little museum about Pioneer Square’s history to get to the elevator that will take you up to the bar and observatory. Another nearby options that’s taller and sans the museum is the Sky View Observatory .
- Fruitsuper – This beautiful shop has thoughtful gifts and home goods with a hygge vibe. It shares a space with a natural wine bar!
- Velouria – A women’s fashion shop with great handmade jewelry and some home decor gifts made in the PNW.
- Flora and Henri – A chic women’s shop with thoughtfully-curated gifts and stunning interiors. It’s attached to the best doughnuts in the city, General Porpoise.
- General Porpoise – Great stop for fluffy brioche doughnuts filled with yummy concoctions. Get the vanilla custard and chocolate marshmallow if available! They’re some of the best desserts in Seattle .
- The Pastry Project – Stop by their soft serve dip window for a sweet treat in summer! I love the guava passionfruit dip shell if available. It’s some of the best ice cream in Seattle !
Pro tip: The most touristy thing to do in Pioneer Square is the Underground Tour . I’ve done it and found the guides a bit crass, but it’s cool going under the streets to see the historic city before current-day Seattle was built on top of it.
Get dinner in Capitol Hill
website | directions | best for: artsy shops, food, and nightlife
Head east on Pike Street to walk up the hill to Capitol Hill. This is an artsy LGBTQ-friendly neighborhood full of great spirit, murals, and a hip crowd. If any shops are still open, pop in because Capitol Hill is one of the best shopping destinations in Seattle . If you have time, you can take a guided neighborhood tour with a local.
Hunger is probably hitting by now, so stop for dinner. There are so many awesome options, but here are some of my favorites to visit during your 2 days in Seattle itinerary:
- Spinasse – Fancy Italian restaurant with the best tasting menu in the city.
- Taurus Ox – Awesome Laotian food and one of the best burgers in Seattle .
- Taylor Shellfish – One of the quintessential spots to get oysters in Seattle .
- Taku – Great Japanese karaage fried chicken from a Top Chef finalist.
Day 2: Check Out Ballard & Fremont
Now that you’ve seen the Downtown Seattle core and surrounding areas, here is how to spend day 2 in Seattle: in my favorite neighborhoods! This assumes you’re able to visit on a Sunday when the popular markets are happening, but if not you should still visit these quaint neighborhoods full of shops and restaurants! Just know the markets referenced won’t be happening.
Go to the Ballard Farmers Market
website | directions | best for: souvenirs, especially food ones
The Ballard Farmers Market is arguably the best Seattle farmers market . It runs every Sunday rain or shine year round. I love visiting it during my self-guided Ballard food tour so that I can graze and pop into boutique stores along the street that the market is located. If you’re in Seattle on a Sunday, definitely go here! If not though, exploring Downtown Ballard’s shops is still a great way to explore Seattle in 2 days!
You can easily spend 2-3 hours in the area. While browsing the market, keep an eye out for these vendors:
- Foraged & Found Edibles – I used to be a member of their CSA. They forage beautiful mushrooms and wild greens around Washington. Check out their stall to see if they have dried mushrooms and teas to take home!
- St. Jude’s Tuna – This local fishery makes exceptional canned tunas, which travel well as a souvenir.
- Jonboy Caramels – These are crazy addictive soft caramel chew candies.
- Ayako & Family – They make beautiful jams.
- Salt Blade – Really yummy locally-made salamis.
- Collin Family Orchard – An excellent orchard my sister is a CSA member of. Check out their stall for any fresh fruit that looks appealing to have on hand for the snacks.
Do a crawl around Ballard breweries
Ballard breweries crawl itinerary | best for: local microbrews
Within less than a mile from the Ballard Farmers Market you’ll find more than 15 local breweries. The best part? They’re all within walking distance from each other.
My favorite of the bunch is Obec Brewing , but find even more nearby in my guide to the ultimate Seattle brewery tour .
Check out the Fremont Sunday
website | directions | best for: vintage, maker goods, and food trucks
About a mile away from downtown Ballard is downtown Fremont. Here you’ll find more funky boutiques and the Fremont Sunday Market.
Unlike the Ballard Farmers Market, this caters more to gifts and food trucks. Pop into stores and stalls that interest you while taking my self-guided Fremont food tour . When all is said and done you’ll probably spent about 2 hours in this charming Seattle neighborhood. Here’s my guide on things to do in Fremont Seattle for ideas of how to fill the time.
Take a late afternoon kayak on Lake Union
directions | best for: water views and exercise
I had a dream of kayaking with orcas in Seattle when I first moved here, so kayaking holds a special place in my heart. My favorite way to do it is rent kayaks through Northwest Outdoor Center and take them on Lake Union. It’s honestly one of the quintessential ways to spend a nice day here, so it’s a must on your 2 days in Seattle itinerary!
You won’t see any whales, but you’ll get amazing views of the city and Gas Works Park . This park has huge gas machinery overlooking the lake. It gives off serious steampunk vibes and makes for great photos during your 2 days in Seattle…especially from the water! A lot of guidebooks will tell you to visit Kerry Park in Queen Anne, but I prefer Gas Works.
Another benefit of getting on the water is snooping in all the house boats lining the shores. Every trip I’ll find new ones with super cute decor and ambiance. Paddle around and enjoy them while the sun sets!
Want to get on the water sans kayak?
Try this short 1-hour cocktail cruise on Lake Union instead. Great views with none of the work, plus drinks!
Get a seafood dinner
After all the walking and kayaking you did, you’ll probably be starving. No 2 days in Seattle itinerary is complete without visiting one of the best fish restaurants in Seattle .
Since you’ll be in Fremont, head to one of my go-to restaurants in Seattle : RockCreek . They have excellent fish and great ambiance with both indoor and outdoor dining.
Get the fish Provençal, which is piled high with herbs and fried shallots. Just make sure to leave room for dessert. They make my favorite desserts in all of Seattle: s’more and key lime pie cups!
More options to explore Seattle in 2 days
Whew! You’ll have a jam-packed 2 days in Seattle itinerary using my suggestions above, but it’ll give you a taste of the best of the city.

- Chevron down 1. Downtown Area
The tour begins in Seattle’s bustling downtown core, highlighting the Pike Place Market, Seattle Art Museum, Shopping District, and the world’s first Starbucks.
- Chevron down 2. Pioneer Square & Stadium District
Seattle’s original downtown is now a 35-square-block historic district filled with turn-of-the-century Romanesque architecture, art galleries, and trendy restaurants, all of which border the sports stadiums for the Seahawks, Sounders, and Mariners.
- Chevron down 3. International District & Waterfront
Home to Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Cambodian, and Hmong communities, this neighborhood continues to play a role in Seattle’s multicultural identity. Seattle’s waterfront includes the aquarium, Ferris wheel, classic seafood restaurants, funky souvenir shops, historic piers, and ferry and water taxi terminals.
- Chevron down 4. Seattle Center & Queen Anne View Point
The Seattle Center is a 72-acre urban park and is the site of the 1962 World’s Fair. It’s the home of the Space Needle, Paul Allen’s Experience Music Project, Dale Chihuly’s Garden and Glass exhibition, and the Pacific Science Center.
Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill provides a dramatic panoramic photo opportunity of Seattle’s skyline. You also view the spectacular architecture and aesthetic in one of the city’s more exclusive, old-money neighborhoods.
- Chevron down 5. Fremont Neighborhood & Magnolia Bluff
Fremont neighborhood, famous for its outdoor art and nude bicyclists in the Summer Solstice parade, is also a microcosm of the challenges Seattle faces as it grapples with growth. This once-quirky bohemian artist colony is now transforming into a high-tech powerhouse with offices for Google, Tableau, and Adobe while remaining true to its artsy roots.
The views just keep coming! Along with our stop in Fremont, we visit the rocky peaks and grassy knolls of Magnolia Bluff. This northwest Seattle neighborhood sits atop a peninsula looking out upon Elliott Bay. Watch ferries and boats float across the water, with West Seattle, Bainbridge Island, and even majestic Mt. Rainier in the distance on a clear day.

This New ‘Standby’ Cruise Fare Costs Just $49 Per Day—but Is It Worth It?

Would you be willing to wait at a port city with your bags packed, hoping to board a cruise at the last minute, all in order to secure one of the cheapest cruise deals out there? Holland America—with its industry-first standby fare offerings—is betting yes.
The line’s new Standby List Program allows travelers to put their names on a list of prospective passengers to be confirmed for a voyage if there are unsold rooms on the ship. Standby cruisers only pay $49 a day, but they receive as little as two days’ notice to get ready for the trip.
For flexible travelers, the scheme offers the possibility of huge savings. Here’s everything cruisers should know about sailing on standby.
How do the fares work?
To get on the standby list, travelers can select an itinerary on Holland America's list of standby-eligible voyages and call 877-724-5425 to join. (You can also have your travel advisor add you to the standby list on your behalf.)
Once you're on the list, you'll be charged $49 per person per day (not including taxes, fees and port expenses, which can cost several hundred dollars more). If you’re not selected for the cruise, you’ll receive a full refund.
When the week of the sailing arrives, the cruise line will start notifying standby passengers whether they made the cut. Guests are confirmed for their sailings in the order they were added to the standby list, so signing up early counts. Would-be passengers should expect to hear their status between seven to two days before the voyage’s departure.
Travelers who aren’t confirmed within two days of the sailing’s departure receive an immediate refund. Truly spontaneous travelers can choose to cut things even closer with a more nail-biting option: They can opt to remain on the standby list all the way up until 90 minutes before departure to see if there’s a no-show. If that doesn't work out, they’ll still get a full refund.
The deal could offer major savings to group travelers who have a bit of flexibility this summer, as the third and fourth guests in a stateroom can travel nearly for free—they would just be on the hook for taxes and fees. But young families are not eligible for cruising standby, as the fares are only available for travelers ages 21 and older. Since it would be a major gamble to travel long distances for an unconfirmed trip, the standby option makes the most sense for people who live in or near eligible ports like Vancouver , Seattle , San Diego , Fort Lauderdale , Boston , Montreal , or Quebec .
How can travelers take advantage?
In 2024, the bulk of standby fares that Holland America is offering are for Alaskan voyages departing Seattle, Whittier, and Vancouver, as well as New England and Eastern Canada voyages departing from Boston, Montreal, and Quebec City.
There are also a handful of transatlantic sailings departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, including an extended six-week sailing in November that meanders through dozens of Mediterranean ports in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, to name a few. Most of the dates for the standby itineraries stretch from May through September, with a few options in October and November as well.
It all sounds appealing, but there are a few factors travelers should keep in mind. “With this program, you've got to be extremely flexible in all aspects of your trip,” says Tanner Callais, founder of cruise travel advice site Cruzely . “Some of these cruises sail for extended periods of time, including up to 42 days,” which is the duration of that lengthy Mediterranean sailing. “You also don't know what sort of cabin you'll receive,” he says. “If you're someone that has to have a balcony room, then this might not be for you.
The type of cabin could, in fact, be a deal breaker for certain travelers. Holland America says it charges standby guests for an interior stateroom, a space as small as 143 square feet with no windows. But travelers could be assigned any category of room ranging up to a verandah stateroom, which ranges from 228 to 405 square feet with enough outdoor space to fit two deck chairs. However, it’s all based on availability.
“Travelers who want to benefit from a standby fare should keep in mind that once confirmed, Holland America Line assigns their room,” says Rob Clabbers, founder and president of the agency Q Cruise + Travel . “While that might result in savings, it means travelers may end up in the last remaining and likely less preferred location—above a theater or night club [or] all the way forward or aft. While this may work for some, it is definitely not recommended for those who fear seasickness, have mobility issues, would like to be close to travel companions, [or] want to be near or away from elevators,” he says.
Holland America Line also notes that these deals are intended for travelers who live within driving distance of the departure ports. “Booking a last-minute airline ticket could end up being more than the cost of the cruise,” Callais says. “That said, the fares are so low that if you have the flexibility, then it might be one of the best deals you'll ever find. This is especially the case if you're a solo traveler, as the double occupancy fare doesn't apply.”
Travelers will want to run the numbers on each voyage to ensure they’re receiving the best possible deal for enduring the hassle of last-minute arrangements. Some of the sailings do offer incredible value. “However, on other sailings, the savings are not nearly as great,” Clabbers says. “If you or your travel advisor do some research, you may very well find some sailings at fares that are similar or even lower than the $49 per day standby fare—and without the restrictions.”
For instance, it’s possible to book a seven-day Alaska sailing that departs June 9 on Holland America’s website, with prices for an inside room starting at $349 per person, plus $310 in taxes, fees, and port expenses. “You even get a $50 credit to spend on board per room, but the biggest advantage is that you can confirm this several weeks before sailing, so you can fine-tune your travel plans rather than have to wait until the very last minute,” says Clabbers.

Shannon McMahon
Charlie Hobbs
One of the better deals would be the 42-day Mediterranean Cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale in November. Booking that sailing outright, “you would pay $5,479 plus $435 in taxes, fees, and port expenses per person based on double occupancy for an Inside room,” Clabbers says. But, if you sail the itinerary on standby and get confirmed, “you would pay a total $2,058 per person plus taxes. Obviously that would be a good deal.”
Will other cruise lines start offering standby prices?
You might be wondering why a cruise line would offer fares as low as $49 a day. At the end of the day, more guests on board means ships generate more money. “Obviously, a cruise line wants to sail with every cabin filled to maximize revenue and efficiency of scale,” says Callais. “If a room sails empty, the cruise line is still using the same amount of fuel and paying the crew and captain the same wage.”
The majority of new ships break even at 50% occupancy, while older ships need 80% occupancy to hit that benchmark, according to Tom Baker , president of Cruise Center .
Carnival Corporation, which is Holland America’s parent company, saw an average revenue of $236 per passenger each cruise day in 2023, while its direct expenses per passenger was about $156 each day, according to Callais’ analysis of the company’s earnings report . But whereas most of a line’s expenses are fixed, there’s always more room to increase revenue with more passengers, who are bound to spend more on the ship. “In other words, even if this standby rate is less than the cruise line would make at a normal rate, it's still better to earn a little money from it than zero,” Callais says.
Although Holland America is the only major cruise line currently offering the standby fare, it could catch on at other companies if it brings in enough money. “Like most industries, cruise lines are constantly looking at competitors and seeing what they are offering or doing that might benefit their business,” Callais says. “If it works, it will get picked up by others.”
Regardless, it’s likely that standby offerings will stay limited to certain lines, as well as specific ports and times of year. “If the program trains too many passengers to just wait and cruise standby, then that could actually end up hurting the bottom line,” Callais says.
But for many travelers, planning and looking forward to a trip is half the fun: "Part of the joy of travel is the anticipation of the experience," says Clabbers.

Seattle Seahawks News
Seattle Seahawks three biggest remaining needs heading into Day Two of 2024 NFL Draft
The Seattle Seahawks and John Schneider could not hide their excitement after selecting Byron Murphy, DL Texas in the first round. He was clearly the best interior defensive lineman in the entire draft and somehow fell to them at pick 16. However, the team still has some significant remaining needs heading into day two. Where will the team go next in the 2024 NFL Draft?
The Seahawks are on the clock just once on Friday with zero picks in round two and just one in round three as day two kicks off at 7 p.m. ET.
- No. 81 overall (via the Broncos through Saints)
Let's dive into the biggest remaining needs for the Seahawks to see where general manager John Schneider may lean with his next selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Seattle Seahawks bring back very little starting experience from last year's squad on the interior offensive line as a whole. Anthony Bradford is one of the worst projected starting guards in the league too, so he hardly counts. They did bring in the experienced Laken Tomlinson from the Jets, but he's 32 years old and not a long-term option. If there are any injuries whatsoever at guard the Seahawks are going to be trotting out practice squad level talents. If Seattle wants to have any hope in keeping Geno Smith upright this year they have to invest in the interior offensive line. Potential Targets: Christian Haynes (UConn), Mason McCormick (South Dakota State), Zak Zinter (Michigan)
Olu Oluwatimi has started just one game and is likely not be the long-term option at center for the Seahawks. He performed pretty well in limited work for pass protection, but looks completely lost getting off the ball in run blocking. There are a handful of strong natural centers with power and pass pro ability available on day two of the 2024 NFL Draft, so if guard isn't the selection center makes a ton of sense. Potential Targets: Zach Frazier (West Virginia), Sedrick Van Pran (Georgia), Beaux Limmer (Arkansas)
3. Linebacker
If there is a run on interior offensive lineman and the Seahawks miss out they could pivot their attention towards linebacker. The team did just sign Tyrel Dodson and Jerome Baker to short-term deals, but they certainly need to find a strong leader of the defense who could be their foundation moving forward. The depth of this linebacker class isn't great, but the top four or so options would be incredible every down players immediately. Potential options: Edgerrin Cooper (Texas A&M), Junior Colson (Michigan), Payton Wilson (NC State), Jeremiah Trotter Jr. (Clemson), Cedric Gray (North Carolina)

Could Seattle Seahawks Trade Future NFL Draft Picks For Additional Day 2 Selection?
With plenty of talent still on the board going into the second round, the Seattle Seahawks might be willing to part with draft picks from 2025 to climb back into day two. How plausible is such a scenario?
- Author: Corbin K. Smith
In this story:
Scheduled to pick only once on day two of the 2024 NFL Draft after not trading down in the first round and selecting Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider could explore the possibility of dipping into future picks to trade for a second selection in the second or third round.
In a historic draft, 14 consecutive offensive players were picked to open Thursday's first round, including tying a record with six quarterbacks selected in the first 12 picks. Given these unprecedented circumstances, Seattle benefit as much as any team in the round with Murphy falling into their lap. But the domino effect from the run on quarterbacks didn't stop in the middle of the round, as a number of projected first rounders now remain available entering Friday.
Without a pick between 16 and 81 overall, Seahawks general manager John Schneider may be antsy to try to get a second selection on day two of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports
Given circumstances, if there was a year where Schneider would be willing to ship out future draft capital as a means for getting another bite of the day two apple, this would undoubtedly be the ideal situation to do so. But which teams would be ideal candidates to trade up with? And how much would the Seahawks be willing to part with in terms of 2025 selections?
Hosts Corbin Smith and Nick Lee examine the possibility of Schneider dealing back into day two and pitch day two proposals, including a few appealing options to slide back into the early portion of the third round with the Bears and Buccaneers, and share their post-first round dueling mock drafts with who they expect the Seahawks to pick in the final six rounds.
