This is because it is a dry month therefore it supports very many activities such as gorilla trekking and chimpanzee trekking since these are best done during the dry season to give a memorable experience.

Uganda is a very beautiful country that everyone yearns to have a visit at one time. This is because it has got very nice things such as national parks, among those including the primate parks of Bwindi, mgahinga and kibale national park. More so, Uganda has got a number of wild life including the big five which have also attracted very many people. The water bodies and so on. All these make Uganda a very beautiful country for a safari .

Is February a good month to visit Uganda?

This is the hottest month throughout the year having a degree of 25 0 C temperatures .

It is said that the northern part of Uganda is very dry and semi arid. This makes it an opportunity for the increased number of clients to come to Uganda for a picnic adventure experience. During this month, most of the wild life come closer looking for water holes where to get water for drinking. This makes it easy for wild life viewing.

For the tourists who would like to trek gorilla and chimpanzees, you are advised to book as early as possible just like 6 to 7 months before the trekking date. This is advised always because the permits get done easily.

Uganda in February

Much like January, February is an ideal time to visit Uganda. Dry conditions and pleasant temperatures make for perfect game drives and boat safaris across the country.

Is February a good time to visit Uganda?

Throughout February, average temperatures in Uganda are around 25 °C, making it one of the hottest months of the year.

The north of the country is particularly dry and arid, so most visitors keep south during the dry season. The reduction in rainfall brings the wildlife to the remaining watering holes, meaning February offers some of the best game viewing in Uganda.

Visitor numbers are slightly lower than in December and January, so hotel and lodge rates can be lower . If you want to visit the gorillas or chimps, permits will sell out quickly for December - February, so you'll need to book well in advance.

Why February is The Best Time To Visit & Travel Uganda

Why You Should Visit Uganda in February, Bets time to visit Uganda

February is an excellent month to visit Uganda because it’s one of the moderately dry periods that won’t have your itinerary interrupted by downpours. And the vegetation during this time is the greenest, great for photography. Besides that, you must consider why you’re visiting the “Pearl of Africa” and what you want to see and experience on holiday in Uganda.

Like other Eastern African destinations , Uganda has two weather seasons (dry and rainy) that are a primary determinant of traveling around Uganda on a safari vacation. The two seasons are spread throughout the year and sometimes not easily separated, especially for regions close to the equator.

March to May

Traveling between March to May (the first rainy season) means searching for wildlife will be somewhat challenging. The savanna plains have dense vegetation and tall grass, making it much easier for the savanna animals to hide from sight. But the landscapes will show off a picturesque emerald green cover great for photography.

If you’re not much for the game and into landscape beauty, this is the most beautiful time to visit Uganda. You may have to stay in the vehicle or carry your raincoat to ready yourself for occasional drenching downpours.

April to September

From April to September, the Great Migration northwards happens, when tens of thousands of wildebeest crash across East Africa, from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, searching for food and water.

East Africa’s massive attraction sees travelers overflowing into Uganda’s rainforest jungle to catch sight of the endangered mountain gorillas .

June to August and December to February

June to August and December to February are generally dry and cooler — considered the year’s busiest time (peak season). That is the best time for gorilla trekking .

In the savanna parks , vegetation is less, and animals gather around watering holes, making wildlife easier to spot. The skies are clear; there are less rain and more sunshine. Fortunately, national parks in Uganda don’t get crowded like in neighboring Kenya and Tanzania.

By January, the rains have drastically reduced to almost none. The region enters its first yearly dry spell until early March, clearing February for a fantastic holiday experience in Uganda.

7 reasons why February is the best time to visit and travel around Uganda

1. it’s the driest time of the year.

So it’s one of the best times of the year for seeing wildlife. The undergrowth is sparser, making it more difficult for the animals to camouflage and travel long distances for water.

On a game drive across the savanna, you’ll encounter large herds of giraffes , elephants , and gazelles on parade. At the same time, a forest jungle hike makes for an unforgettable encounter with rare primates like mountain gorillas , chimpanzees , and many forest dwellers.

2. The best time to track gorillas and chimpanzees

Uganda’s most precious jewel is the more than 500 mountain gorillas in its tropical rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga National Parks.

Visiting these sanctuaries during the rainy seasons can leave a somewhat wrong impression of the country, for the roads are impassable, and the drenching rains are annoying.

Visiting in February, however, will make you fall in love with the country’s rural attractions. During February, the forest floors are dry, with little or no rain, and the trails are passable. You’ll find your rural or forest walking experience an unforgettable memory.

3. It’s shoulder season

After the excitement of the December & January holidays, fewer people are traveling, flights are cheaper, and accommodation prices have come down. It’s a much nicer traveling business, staying in premium safari camps and riding the savanna plains with little or no crowds.

4. The temperatures are a little higher during the day

With temperatures around the 30 degrees Celsius mark, the weather’s perfect for enjoying hotel and safari camp swimming pools.

Walking in the jungle on a steamy hot day gives the right temperatures under the shadows of massively huge old trees—a great time for a trek in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest .

Oh, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, coming back home to winter with a tan isn’t such a bad idea, either.

5. The pleasant evenings

Uganda’s cities have awesome outdoorsy nightlife, especially the big ones; Jinja , Kampala , and Mbarara; think rooftop bars, beer gardens, and outdoor restaurants.

Order a Tusker or Nile Special beer and a ‘relax’ (a pan-fried egg and wheat dish) and settle for an evening of travel stories with your fellow adventurers.

6. It’s an excellent time for bird watching

It’s always a good time of year for bird-watching in Uganda. Notably, from September to April, migratory birds from North Africa and Europe travel south to nest and take advantage of the warm (and dry) weather. Along with seeing spectacular local birds like Black-headed Lapwing, Orange Weaver, Red-throated lathe, and the famous rare and near-endemic Shoebill.

7. Into hiking? Climb Mt Stanley (minus the crowds)

At an elevation of 5,109 m (16,763 ft), it is the highest mountain in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda and the third-highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro (5,895 m) and Mount Kenya (5,199 m).

The peak and several other surrounding peaks are high enough to support glaciers. Mount Stanley is part of the Rwenzori Mountains National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it’s a popular trek for avid hikers.

Doing the climb in February means the slopes are dry, and it’s much less busy than the peak June to October season. It’s also cooler than during the summer months; you’re more likely to encounter snow the higher you get.

Uganda Safaris in February

Visiting uganda in february/ uganda safaris in february.

Uganda Safaris in February : Just like the month of January , February is as well an ideal and one of the best month to embark on your long awaited Uganda Safari . Throughout the month of February, the temperatures and climatic conditions are just perfect for you and your loved ones to get out of you comfort zone and experience what it feel like being on an adventure in the pearl of Africa. Unlike January, February is hotter and in fact one of the hottest month with average temperatures of about 25 degrees since it lies within the dry season in Uganda.

However, there is a likelihood of a little rainfall during this month though not a must but since Uganda is a tropical country so we never experience total dry season.

During the month of February, almost all safaris in Uganda are possible since all the accommodations are operating perfectly, the trails in the parks are passable and the entire vegetation cover minimal for easy sighting of different wildlife species. Most of the animals congest with in areas with water during the month of February thus easy to view them even at the comfort of some accommodations especially those that overlook the parks.

Below are the Uganda safaris to enjoy during the month of February:

Mountain Gorilla trekking: Obviously with Mountain Gorilla trekking , this is one of the perfect months for you to slay as you walk in dry trails of Bwindi impenetrable national park and Mgahinga gorilla national park which are the only destinations for Gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda . Apart from trekking gorillas, you as well has a golden opportunity of spending more time with gorillas during Gorilla habituation experience that is only done in Rushaga sector of Bwindi impenetrable national park. The challenge with this however is that gorilla permits tend to be sold off as early as possible thus prior booking is advisable at least 6 months and above in advance to secure your trek. You as well need to ensure that you book your accommodations in time.

Chimpanzee trekking safari: this activity is also favorable and best enjoyed during this month of February and it is mostly enjoyed within Kibale forest national park though one can as well decide to view chimpanzees in other destinations like Budongo forest, Kalinzu forest, Kyambura gorge etc. a more fascinating encounter with Chimpanzees can as well be enjoyed, the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX) which allows more time with Chimpanzees in their habitats.

Golden monkey trekking: you ought not to miss out this stunning adventure of watching the little primates as they swing with in the bamboo forest especially in the month of February. This activity is only conducted in Mgahinga Gorilla national park in south western part of Uganda and since they are endangered primates, trust me once you encounter with them, the experience is remarkable and memorable.

Volcano hiking safari: February is a perfect month for volcanoes hiking within Mgahinga gorilla national park . There are 3 volcanoes that can be hiked from Ugandan side with in Virunga massif and they include Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhavura and Mount Sabyinyo.

Apart from Volcano hiking safaris, there are other mountains that one can hike starting from a few days to several days including Mount Elgon Hike and Mount Rwenzori hike.

Game drives: During the month of February, the tracks used for game drive safaris in different savanna parks of Uganda are dry thus no possibilities of getting stuck. During this month of February, even saloon cars can be used for the game drive unlike during rainy season where only 4×4 vehicles are recommended for the game drives for fear of getting stuck in the park since the roads inside the park aren’t well maintained thus in most cases rainy season can be a nightmare to dry with in but with the dry month of February, you are on a sure deal of driving in dry tracks.

Boat cruise: The water levels during the dry month of February is minimal thus best for boat cruise safaris. It is as well the best time for boat cruise since most of the wildlife in the park usually congest near water bodies in search fresh vegetation and water thus easy to view as many animals and possible while on a boat cruise safari.

Community and cultural tours: February is as well one of the best months to enjoy community and cultural tours with an opportunity to meet and interact with the locals in their homesteads and farms.

Conclusion;

Uganda is generally a best destination to visit at any given period of time all year round but the month of February is one of the best months when we receive a large number of travelers considered to be high season with little or no rains.

Uganda Safari in February – Uganda holiday in February – Gorilla & Chimpanzee trekking safaris

Uganda safari in February – Although February is still being a dry season, February begins to see a drop in numbers of tourists, and prices of some hotels and lodges and availability of services are most likely to change accordingly. As with January , February is a great time for bird watching, Gorilla tracking , boat safaris and particularly game viewing .

As Uganda moves towards the end of the dry season, vegetation will become sparse and therefore wildlife is easier to spot as they start to gather round the remaining waterholes. Uganda is good to visit in February since it is a good time to visit the Uganda national parks in the south and in the north of the country. It is particularly hot and dusty.

Kibale Forest National Park is splendid in February so you will be able to witness up to 13 species of primate in the park from vervets and Colobus monkeys to the much-loved Chimpanzees . As the trekking trails will be dry, walking shouldn’t be too strenuous therefore this is a great time for travelers of all abilities to track the Chimpanzees.

Weather in February

  • There are clear skies, little rainfall, and cooler evenings
  • February is part of the short dry season
  • It is one of the hottest months of the year
  • Great Adventure Safaris recommends bringing a jumper for chilly evenings and nights.

What people love about Uganda Tours in February

Let me start by saying that booking our Uganda/Rwanda safari through Mukisa was truly one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made! I am the type of person that meticulously plans every trip and will read through countless reviews, itineraries, etc. before making a decision. For this trip in particular, we were looking for a private tour that had a wide range of activities from multiple treks to game drives and cultural experiences. What initially drew me to Mukisa was the positive feedback from other guests and a mention on their website that they encourage/aid female tour guides. Upon reaching out through their website, I was immediately impressed with Richard’s quick responses, level of detail and ability to accommodate all of our requests. We started with the “10 Days Safari to Encounter Uganda’s Gorillas, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour” but Richard was able to help us customize the trip and integrate other activities that we were interested in - for example, my husband and I wanted to include a bike ride at the end of our trip. We originally didn’t think this could be part of our safari experience so reached out to a few local bike companies but received no responses. I posed the question to Richard (thinking it would be difficult to accommodate) and within 24 hours, he had found us a bike guide and adjusted our trip’s itinerary. Richard showed a tremendous amount of professionalism throughout the planning process, and loved that he met us in-person at the start of our trip! In terms of the actual safari, I could write several pages on all of the things that we loved but I’ll keep it to a few highlights: 1. The safari had an incredibly wide range of things to do, see, explore, etc. - from the types of animals (we were able to see the Big 5!) to the environments, ranging from jungle to forest to savannah. It was a lot to squeeze into 11 days but we truly feel like we left Uganda/Rwanda with a well-rounded experience. 2. All of the accommodations were conveniently located, clean and comfortable. If possible, we would recommend staying at the same hotel for at least 2 nights/each so you can feel settled and potentially upgrading 1-2 hotels, if you’re looking for additional amenities (e.g. swimming pool). Elephant Hab was our favorite hotel in Uganda. 3. We absolutely adored our guide & driver! Most of the other tour groups that we encountered had a single male guide/driver and we loved that Mukisa prioritized giving opportunities to female guides. Mable and Solomon went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and even made adjustments to the itinerary on the fly. Mable had a wealth of knowledge about the animals, culture, people, etc. and Solomon was an exceptional driver - making sure we saw all of the animals on our bucket list and navigating the constantly changing conditions. 4. It was quite clear that Mukisa has a strong reputation in the safari community. Several of the hotel managers and rangers made comments to us that they always enjoy working with Mukisa, and they have some of the best guides/drivers. If you’ve made it this far through my review then I hope you’re now considering Mukisa for your upcoming trip. I do not typically write extensive reviews but I genuinely think that this company is one of the best out there and will make this trip everything you could’ve imagined and more!
I posted my reviews on Google and trip advisor. But in short, it was amazing we enjoyed every moment of our trip. Truly the safari of a lifetime. Recommended by all means! Thanks again to all of you Richard! Martin and Andreea
Epic trip. Had to take one shot at an African Safari incase can’t go again. After lot of research chose Uganda because that is the only place where in addition to the big 5 you can do mountain gorilla trekking. Saw huge number of elephants on land and water, hippos in huge colonies and even 3 grazing at night in our resort grounds. Saw leopard climbing down tree as well as pride of lions in close proximity. Saw a number of white rhinos giraffes huge herds of water buffalos, Nile crocodiles in addition to multitude of birds. The chimpanzee trek was a good preparation for the ultimate gorilla trek in biwindi impenetrable forest. The people of Uganda are very very courteous and polite. Our tour guide Bosco and driver Vince tried hard to make the trip memorable and were very attentive to our needs. Strongly recommend .

Uganda safaris – where & when to go, and what to do and see

Thinking of a Uganda safari? With the big five and some of the world’s best gorilla and chimpanzee trekking on offer Uganda is a safari destination that has it all. Now is a good time to go, as Uganda has yet to take off as a tourist destination in as large a way as many of it’s neighbours. This means safaris in Uganda can prove good value, with less crowds around when you get to the wildlife. It also has something of ‘the road less travelled’ feel about it.

Uganda is small by African standards at ‘just’ 236,000 km sq, around the same size as Great Britain. The country is lush and a verdant green, with one third of its borders made up of three of Africa’s Great Lakes, and the Victoria Nile running through the center. The East African tropical heat is tempered by an average altitude of 1,000 meters, with the east and west borders featuring significant mountains.

Self drive safaris are an option in some national parks in Uganda, though you will need access to a 4WD to get the most out the parks due to the clay tracks. ( Read some tips on driving in Uganda. ) If this sounds a little too much effort for you check out our guide to safari tour companies in Uganda  to research a driver and guide or full-on tour.

The wildlife in Uganda doesn’t compare favourably in terms of density with it’s East African neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, but it is extremely diverse with over 500 mammal species alone. There are pockets with strong wildlife density – such as Murchison Falls National Park, which is relatively small with exceptional wildlife viewing – but the big safari draw in Uganda is the primate life. Uganda is probably the prime destination in the world for trekking opportunities to see habituated chimpanzee and gorilla families in the wild – a truly memorable experience, and one of the best walking safaris to be found anywhere.

Poaching and deforestation continue to be a problem in Uganda – as in much of the rest of Africa – and a recent oil discovery in Lake Albert has led to encroachment into a small area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Despite this the general standard of national parks in Uganda is excellent, with good facilities, public transport access and range of lodgings, though infrastructure is not particularly developed. Tourist numbers in Uganda are much smaller than neighboring Kenya or Tanzania, meaning national parks are generally less crowded and offer a more enjoyable and intimate visiting experience.

Big five spotting

Uganda Safaris 3

Head up country to try and spot the big five animals , though you’ll need to mix your safari up and visit more than one national park. Rhinos are found only in Ziwa National Park, which is very close to the jewel of the Ugandan safari industry, Murchison Falls National Park, which is home to lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant.

See the power of the Nile

murchison falls from water level

Murchison Falls is one of Uganda’s top tourist sites, where over 300 cubic meters of water each second passes through a narrow gap in the rocks to keep the Victoria Nile flowing between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert. The park surrounding the falls and river is one of Uganda’s top wildlife destinations.

Best time to safari in Uganda

As a relatively small country with a consistent altitude, the majority of the country enjoys the same topical climate. In the higher mountainous areas to the east and west of the country it can get surprisingly cold at night times. If you’re planning a game drive.January and February are the hottest months when wildlife viewing is at it’s best.

As with the rest of East Africa there’s a ‘long rain’ and a ‘short rains’ season – March to May and October to November respectively. During the short rains it generally rains only for short periods at a time, meaning your wildlife viewing will not be too disrupted. Travel to most destinations during rainy season is possible, though you should leave yourself more time to get around.

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, and you’re virtually guaranteed to see gorillas on any planned gorilla trek. However, bear in mind that the trekking terrain is tough going with dense forest and steep hills, so ensure you dress appropriately. See more hints and tips on gorilla trekking .

National parks in Uganda

Though Uganda doesn’t have as high a safari profile as neighbours Kenya or Tanzania, there’s still plenty to see and do… and often with far smaller crowds. As well as the big five, Uganda is home to more than half the world’s remaining mountain gorilla, and plenty of chimps. It’s also recognized as one of the best places for bird spotting in the world. Most national parks in Uganda have a good range of accommodation, and the parks are easily accessible, making Uganda a great place for a safari.

Top Uganda national park picks

Murchison falls national park.

Uganda’s first national park, and it’s largest, Murchison Falls is home to 80 mammal species and over 450 bird species, and is the jewel in the crown of the country’s safari industry. The park is predominantly open savannah grasslands, which makes for top game viewing.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park’s evergreen forest in Western Uganda contains an array of landscapes and is home to 12 species of primates. Aside from the stunning vistas and virgin forest, the big draw here is the chance to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat, with both chimpanzee tacking and habituation experiences on offer year round.

 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Uganda Safaris 4

Meaning ‘darkness’, Bwindi’s magnificent forest is certainly dense, and has hundreds of diverse mammal species (and 200 hundred species of butterflies!) alongside the population of around 320 mountain gorillas. There are four different areas with accommodation in the park to track habituated gorillas – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Mgahinga National Park

silverback gorilla

Uganda’s smallest national park – just 34 km sq – in the south west of the country is part of the larger Virunga Conservation area that also spreads across Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Gorilla trekking is the main activity here, though spending a few days in the park will also allow you to hike the Virunga Volcanoes for unparalleled views of central Africa, and track the endangered golden monkey.

Best Time To Visit Uganda, Best Time To Go To Uganda For A Safari

3 Days Murchison Falls Safari - What to See (Attractions)

If you want to safari in Uganda and wondering when to go to Uganda? or what is the best time to travel to Uganda? When should I visit Uganda? The best time to visit Uganda is during its two dry seasons, from December to February and June to August.

Most Uganda safari destinations are at their best during this time of the year. The climate is mild and mostly dry. However, You can safari to Uganda at any time of the year. However, the best time to visit Uganda is during dry seasons.

The dry season is when to go to Uganda for the best game viewing. The foliage in national parks in Uganda is sparse. Animals tend to congregate around water sources making them easier to locate. Hiking conditions are easy. So, this is the best time to go to Uganda for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and mountain climbing.

The dry season is generally considered the best season to visit Uganda . But if you prefer to economize on your Uganda tours , a rainy season visit – March to May and September to November – is also well worth considering. It is the perfect time to take the advantage of discounted low-season rates on accommodation and tours.

Birding in Uganda is fantastic all year round but is at its peak between November and April when migrant species are present. Temperatures barely change throughout the seasons, at around 24 to 30°C, so you can safari in Uganda all year round.

For more information on when to visit Uganda , you can use our detailed month-by-month guide below or simply enquire with our Uganda safari expert.

The General Dry Season in Uganda

  • Between December and February,
  • Between June and August
  • These 2 dry seasons of Uganda are the best months to take Uganda wildlife safaris and see amazing wildlife but also, it is the perfect month for visitors on Uganda hiking safaris.
  • In the savannah reserves, vegetation is less and animals gather around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot.
  • Also, primate watching tours in Uganda, including Uganda gorilla tours, and chimpanzee tracking are very easily done during dry seasons.
  • The sky is very clear and there is less rain and more sunshine.
  • You need to book your Uganda gorilla safari permits in advance.

The General Wet Season in Uganda

  • April, May, October, and November are the wettest months in Uganda
  • During this time of the year, some Uganda roads to different safari destinations become very bad and cars often get stuck.
  • Forest trails can become slippery and challenging
  • During this time camping, gorilla trekking, and mountain hiking become very difficult.
  • You won’t be able to change your expensive gorilla permit if it pours with rain; departures go as scheduled.
  • Plenty of rainfall also means that wildlife in Uganda savanna parks tends not to congregate conveniently around water sources.
  • However, the scenery of the savannah reserves is greener and you’ll still see plenty of Uganda wildlife during the wet season.
  • There are several newborn animals in Uganda in major Uganda National Parks.

Best Time To Go To Uganda – By Month

If you’re planning a safari to Uganda for the first time, understanding the best season to visit Uganda is a great place to start.  Here is a month-by-month guide on the best time to visit Uganda . Remember that some events straddle the months, and all events are subject to change.

January is part of the short dry season in Uganda. It is one of the hottest months of the year and days are generally dry and sunny. But as Uganda’s climate is tropical there may be some rainfall, but these are unlikely to affect your Uganda trip.

January is one of the best times to visit Uganda for fantastic game viewing. There’s less vegetation in the various savannah Uganda National Parks . Animals tend to gather around the remaining water sources. It’s also an ideal time for gorilla and chimp treks. The forests are less muddy and the trails are less slippery. If you wish to combine your Uganda safaris with gorilla trekking in Rwanda this is a perfect time to do so.

This month is a fantastic month for seeing migratory birds in Uganda. Migratory birdlife is a superb subject for keen photographers. January is a popular month to travel, so rates can be high and gorilla permits need to be booked well in advance.

January Climate Averages

  • Day-time average maximum temperature (28°C)
  • Night-time average minimum temperature (18°C)
  • Average rainfall (50mm)
  • Average daylight (12 hours)

February is the last month of the short dry season in Uganda. Like January, February is a great time to visit Uganda for Uganda birding safaris , Uganda gorilla tours , and particularly game viewing.

Boat safaris on the Nile River in Murchison Falls National Park and Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park are brilliant this month. Wildlife tends to congregate at the water sources. Temperatures will still be hot throughout the country. So afternoon relaxation between game drives will be pleasant. Skies are likely to remain clear.

Kibale Forest National Park comes to life in February. You’ll be able to witness up to 13 species of primates in Kibale from Colobus monkeys to the much-loved chimpanzees. The trekking trails will be dry and easy. Therefore this is a great time for travelers of all abilities to go Chimpanzee trekking in Uganda.

February Climate Averages

  • Day-time average maximum temperature (28 o C)
  • Night-time average minimum temperature (18 o C)
  • Average rainfall (61mm)

March is the beginning of the long rainy season in Uganda. Rain is unlikely to continue all day long but it can come in heavy downpours. Rain is usually followed by brighter weather. Days are comfortably warm. Temperatures are pleasant.

Although none of the national parks of Uganda are at their best during this time, there are plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing in safari areas like Queen Elizabeth National Park . And as this month lies outside of the peak season, so prices are likely to be lower. There will also be plenty of availability at a wide selection of Uganda safari lodges.

Another benefit of traveling at the beginning of the rainy season is that there is a lot of food for gorillas on the lower slopes of the mountain. Therefore, although gorilla trekking may be difficult due to wet, muddy, and slippery terrain, the gorilla trek can be short. March is the last month you’ll be able to witness migratory birds of Uganda. They’ll begin to depart and won’t return to the country until November.

March Climate Averages

  • Day-time average maximum temperature (27 o C)
  • Average rainfall (175mm)

The long rainy season in Uganda continues during April, which is usually the wettest month of the year. You should expect heavy rainfall. There are usually blue skies and sunshine immediately after the showers.

The rains fill the waterholes and rivers in the Uganda national parks . The vegetation becomes lush and gorgeously green. But this can make wildlife viewing more challenging. You won’t find large concentrations of wildlife congregating around waterholes on your Uganda wildlife safaris.

You can still track chimpanzees and gorillas at this time of year. However, you’ll need to be prepared for the wet weather and difficult trekking conditions. Properties have excellent availability. Rates are relatively low. Murchison Falls National Park in the northeast has a drier climate, so it’s a good place to visit during April.

April Climate Averages

  • Day-time average maximum temperature (26 o C)
  • Night-time average minimum temperature (19 o C)

May is the end of the long rainy season in Uganda. If you’re not too worried about experiencing rain during your Uganda safari trip or Uganda safari tour , it can be a lovely time to visit Uganda.

Landscapes will be lush and verdant after months of rain. This may make wildlife more difficult to see. But the vegetation will create stunning backdrops for photography. The wet season is also the peak time for animals to give birth. So, May is a good time to look out for the young in the Uganda wildlife safari parks.

Some roads and trails may be very muddy at the beginning of May depending on the intensity of the rainy season.

May Climate Averages

  • Day-time average maximum temperature (25 o C)
  • Night-time average minimum temperature (17 o C)
  • Average rainfall (147mm)

June marks the beginning of the long dry season in Uganda. There is usually plenty of sunshine during June. But as Uganda has a tropical climate there’s still a chance of rain.  All Uganda wildlife safari parks are accessible again enabling you to witness everything that this amazing country has to offer.

As it is the peak season, prices will be higher and permits will need to be booked well in advance. However, one of the benefits of Uganda, as opposed to some other African safari destinations, is that the parks rarely feel busy or overcrowded allowing you intimate wildlife encounters and unforgettable experiences.

Some boutique Uganda safari lodges may fill up fast during the peak season so book early and secure your space at your preferred accommodation. Being the first month after the wet season, June still enjoys lush landscapes so can be a great time to travel if you want to combine wildlife viewing with photogenic scenery.

As June lies within the dry season, temperatures are warm with clear blue skies making it ideal for both Uganda gorilla trekking tours and game drives.

June Climate Averages

  • Average rainfall (74mm)

July is known as the best time to visit Uganda as it lies within the dry season. Warm temperatures and minimal rainfall mean the climate is at its best. All Uganda safari activities ( things to do in Uganda ) are accessible. Although peak season corresponds with higher prices, easy trekking conditions make it a preferred time to travel.

Gorilla trekking, chimpanzee treks, and game viewing to see the unique tree-climbing lions are great wildlife encounters you can experience in July. The temperatures are particularly high when gorilla trekking in July. This is also increased by the exertion of trekking and the recommendation of wearing longer (but lightweight) trousers and sleeves when in the forest.

In the rest of the country, temperatures will be slightly cooler particularly around Lake Victoria due to the location being at altitude. Mornings and late evenings may still be cool so it is always good to have extra layers on hand.

Although children under the age of 15 cannot participate in gorilla treks, thanks to the plethora of other safari options July can still be a good time to take a family Uganda holiday .

July Climate Averages

  • Average rainfall (46mm)
  • Average daylight (12 Hours)

August can be a fantastic time to visit Uganda.

As it lies quite late on in the dry season, wildlife is easier to spot in the game parks in Uganda meaning you should have amazing sightings of elephants, lions, buffalos, and perhaps even elusive leopards. All of the Uganda safari parks are at their best at this time, so travel to Queen Elizabeth National Park to see four of the big five and then on to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for gorilla trekking.

It may still rain at some points in August so it is best to pack for all weather conditions. We advise booking accommodation well in advance during the dry season, as properties have limited availability. Property prices are high in August.

August Climate Averages

  • Night-time average minimum temperature (16 o C)
  • Average rainfall (86mm)

September is usually classed as the end of Uganda’s dry season. However, depending on when the short rains arrive it may be that there are some downpours throughout your safari.

In Bwindi and Mgahinga, Uganda gorilla safari tours always go ahead as planned despite the rainfall, so please be prepared for a wet walk.

You may be lucky and have a completely dry month, in which case wildlife will be easier to spot thanks to grazed-down vegetation and the fact that waterholes will be dwindling by this point in the season so animals will gather around the remaining water supplies.

September Climate Averages

  • Average rainfall (91mm)

October is the start of the shoulder season so prices will be lower and lodge availability will start to free up. This does of course mean weather will be more unpredictable, but despite the rain, temperatures are likely to remain warm.

Most national parks of Uganda will be accessible at this time they just won’t be at their best. The climate at Murchison Falls National Park is steady year-round so a visit to see the River Nile and the impressive falls is a great add-on to an October wildlife safari in Uganda .

Wildlife sightings will still be possible in the game reserves so look out for tree-climbing lions hiding out during rain showers or the endangered mountain gorillas of Bwindi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks sheltering under large leaves.

October Climate Averages

  • Day time average maximum temperature (27 o C)
  • Nighttime average minimum temperature (17 o C)
  • Average rainfall (97mm)

Thanks to the rains throughout October, Uganda’s vegetation is starting to thrive in November. Dry plains become verdant. Although this makes wildlife sightings more difficult, the landscapes are stunning.

As November is a shoulder season in Uganda, prices may be lower at this time. If you’re not opposed to some arduous trekking and potential rain, it is possible to trek gorillas at this time but please be aware this is not the optimum time to visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

November sees the start of the best Uganda birdwatching season (November-April) as migratory birds arrive. Uganda is known for its huge variety of birdlife, with over 1076 Uganda bird species recorded .

November Climate Averages

  • Average rainfall (122mm)

By December the short rains have stopped, making it an ideal time to travel to Uganda. Not only are the landscapes lush and photogenic but all parks are accessible too. The ground underfoot will start to dry out as well, meaning mountain gorilla and chimpanzee trekking will be more manageable.

However, with more desirable conditions comes more travelers. December is a particularly busy time to travel as Ugandan families are on holiday, as are western tourists looking to get away over Christmas and New Year.

If you wish to travel during this period you must book in advance to secure gorilla trekking permits and to ensure your preferred Uganda safari lodges are available. All migratory birds should have arrived by this time so there will be a huge range of species to look out for if you are on a Uganda birding safari .

December Climate Averages

  • Average rainfall (99mm)
  • Average daylight (12 Hours

The best time to visit Uganda is between June to August and December to February, which is during the Dry seasons. Wildlife viewing is at its peak. Primate walks in the forest are a big part of any safari in Uganda. The habitat of rainforests is, by default, very wet, and one can't avoid rain completely. However, after heavy rain, the skies often open up to bright sunshine.

June to August & December to February – Dry Seasons

  • This is the best time for gorilla trekking because these are the drier months
  • In the savannah reserves, there is less vegetation and animals gather around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot
  • Even during the high season (June to September) the parks don't feel crowded
  • The skies are clear; there is less rain and more sunshine
  • Gorilla permits need to be booked very far in advance

Wildlife Photos

uganda safari in february

March to May & September to November – Wet Seasons

  • The scenery of the savannah reserves is greener – it's low season, resulting in lower rates
  • Although wildlife in the savannah reserves is easier to spot in the Dry season, you'll still see plenty
  • There are many newborn animals
  • Some of the roads get very bad and cars often get stuck; forest trails can become slippery and challenging
  • You won't be able to change your expensive gorilla permit if it pours with rain; departures go as scheduled

Luxury & Private Uganda Safaris

Uganda is an Eden of rainforest and lush vegetation, balanced by vast stretches of grassland, lakes and rivers. This diversity of habitats and environments is ideal for a variety of wildlife from primates to big cats, abundant plains game, and prolific bird species.

Most notably, Uganda is home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population and is one of the few countries where you can encounter them in their natural environment. In addition to mountain gorillas, Uganda boasts a dozen other primate species including chimpanzees. Once you have had your fill of forests, move on to the savannah grasslands, lakes and rivers of Lake Mburo , Queen Elizabeth National Park , and Murchison Falls , where you can enjoy both traditional vehicle game drives and game-viewing by boat, which is rarely found in other East African countries.

We love Uganda for its diversity. One day you find yourself kneeling in awe before a gorilla family with your camera at the ready, and the next day you could be floating in a boat and watching the Nile River cascade over Murchison Falls. All the while, the local people and culture will touch your heart.

Explore what a Uganda safari has to offer

Gorilla trekking in either Bwindi or Mgahinga is at the top of everyone’s list, but don’t forget about the exclusive gorilla habituation option, as well. Chimpanzee trekking rivals the gorilla experience and the cheeky chimps will keep you on your toes. Golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga rounds out your ultimate primate experience.

Beyond primates, there is an amazing diversity of activities to enjoy: game drives, boat safaris of varying lengths (one hour to full day), forest walks and hikes, horseback riding, white water rafting, and immersive cultural interactions.

Driving safari across the country can help to keep costs down, especially when shared between 2 to 4 guests; however, the internal bush flights add up quickly, especially because some sectors require a minimum of 4 guests. For a quick gorilla trekking extension to a Kenyan or Tanzanian safari, you’ll need to fly to/from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest plus factor in your gorilla permits, so that moderately priced safari lodge option can price out higher than anticipated.  We, of course, think those gorillas and the other hidden gems of Uganda are worth every penny.

  • Hop on a scheduled charter flight to Bwindi for gorillas if you are tight on time; or if you want to take in the sights and travel by road in a comfy 4×4 vehicle, then visit Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Mburo en route.
  • If you want remote and off-the-beaten path, then consider a safari to either  Kidepo Valley or to Semliki Safari Lodge .
  • Consider booking a gorilla habituation permit for an exclusive and unique experience offering extended time limits with the gorillas.
  • Hike through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest staying at lodges on either end to fully experience the forest.
  • Fly directly from Entebbe to the Maasai Mara in Kenya for an epic primate and migration safari.

Where to go on a Uganda Safari

Visiting the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is at the top of the list, but it’s worth building in some extra time for two treks, some cultural visits and extra hiking in this remarkably beautiful forest. For another primate-fix, we recommend chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park , where you can also spot a handful of other monkeys and varied wildlife. We love off-the-beaten-path destinations, and Kidepo Valley National Park fits the bill for Uganda. This oasis in the semi-desert area in the far north of the country offers an extreme diversity of flora and fauna which you will essentially have all to yourself! Its boasts buffalo herds, cheetah and Rothschild/Nubian giraffe.

Best time to visit Uganda

Straddling the equator, Uganda is a year-round destination, as there is little fluctuation in temperature (average temps in the 80’s, although cooler at night in the higher altitudes – which can be up to 7,500 feet above sea level). It can be quite humid, especially in the mountainous areas where you do your gorilla and chimp trekking. Peak season in terms of best weather and popularity is July through early September and again in late December through February. During peak season, gorilla permits can sell out, so it’s best to plan in advance. October is a “secret season” with great rates at select lodges and lovely weather.

Like other parts of East Africa there are two rainy periods: March to May (long rains) and late September to November (short rains). It will be rainier during these months for gorilla trekking, but the gorillas live in a rainforest so any time of year will be wet. Some roads do become impassible in the rainy season, but the local guides know the best ways to get around. Despite the rain, October and November are actually good months to be in Uganda, especially for birding.

Wildlife in Uganda

The highlight on a trip to Uganda is spending that precious hour with the endangered mountain gorillas, but you can also spend equally rewarding time with chimpanzees. On a safari across Uganda’s national parks, you can also spot four of the Big 5 (rhino are found only in a private sanctuary and have not yet been released into national parks), boundless plains game including zebra, giraffe and various antelope, and prolific bird life. Other rare species you may encounter include the elusive forest elephant, giant forest hog, and shoebill. In Murchison Falls National Park, you can see the rare Nubian giraffe and learn more about the influential conservation efforts to save this endangered species. Please note that not all parks in Uganda have all of these species, but we’re here to help make a plan for your priorities.

Let us help you plan a bespoke trip of a lifetime for you.

What is the best time of the year to go on a safari in Uganda?

This guide presents to you the best time of the year to go on a safari in Rwanda.

Dry long Season (June to September)

The best time to go on a safari in Uganda is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to September. During this time, the weather is typically characterized by mild and the skies are clear, with minimal rainfall, and comfortable temperatures, creating ideal conditions for outdoor activities and wildlife viewing. With the vegetation sparse and animals congregating around water sources, sightings of iconic species such as mountain gorillas, lions, and elephants are more common, making for exceptional safari experiences. The dry season also coincides with the peak travel season in Uganda, so you can expect to see a higher concentration of tourists and availability of accommodations and tours, so it’s advisable to book accommodations and activities well in advance.

Short dry peal (December to February)

Another ideal time to visit Uganda for a safari is during the short dry season, which takes place from December to February. This period offers similar weather conditions as the main dry season, with clear skies and mild temperatures. Wildlife viewing is also excellent during this time, as the animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot.

Wet season (March to May and the October to November)

The wet season, occurring from March to May and then October to November is characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity, making it the least popular time for safaris in Uganda. While the rain rejuvenates the landscapes and creates lush vegetation, it can also make travel and wildlife viewing more challenging. Roads may become muddy and impassable, and wildlife may be more dispersed as they seek shelter from the rain. However, for birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts, the wet season can offer opportunities to witness migratory birds and capture unique scenes against the backdrop of dramatic skies.

When to visit uganda, january to february, high season.

January through February bring relatively hot weather with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and plenty of sunshine, making it an excellent time to visit Uganda for gorilla trekking and chimpanzee tracking safaris in the lush forests.

During this period, the northern countryside of Uganda can become hot and dusty.

MARCH TO MAY

March marks the start of the rainy season, making it an ideal time to witness the birth of many animals. Additionally, birdwatchers will enjoy spotting a wide variety of colorful winged creatures during this time.

April is the wettest month in Uganda, and as a result, parks tend to be quieter, and some roads are impassable. March is also the low season, which means, budget travelers can enjoy discounted hotel and lodge rates.

In May, the first rainy season of the year draws to a close, bringing with it lesser downpours and an astonishing display of greenery throughout the countryside.

JUNE TO AUGUST

Peak season.

June marks the beginning of the peak season in Uganda, thanks to its stunning dry weather that extends through August. It's the perfect time for a safari, attracting many tourists to the country. However, it's essential to note that gorilla permits and descent safari lodges can book up quickly during this period. So, booking well in advance is wise to avoid any inconvenience.

July is another excellent month for Uganda safaris, especially seeing gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrableorest or Mgahinga . During this time, wild animals tend to congregate around water sources, making them easier to spot on safari drives.

August is a great month for game-viewing safaris , as well as boat safaris in Uganda. Despite being the peak season, parks don't feel overcrowded during this time.

SEPTEMBER TO DECEMBER

September marks the end of Uganda's dry season; however, the onset of the rainy season can vary, and you may experience occasional downpours during your Uganda safari. While this may not be ideal for some, it presents a cost-saving opportunity for those willing to brave the rain. It's noteworthy that gorilla trekking excursions may be affected during this time.

October is a relatively quiet month for safaris in Uganda, with reasonable prices and opportunities for special deals on accommodation and transport. While most game parks remain accessible, the rainfall can be unpredictable for gorilla treks during this time of year.

In November , the rainy season persists into its dying periods, transforming the countryside into lush green landscapes offering excellent wildlife and photography opportunities. While the rainy weather may deter some travelers, it is a perfect time for travel photographers.

December marks the end of the wet season in Uganda, with short rains paving the way for the peak season. This month is ideal for game-viewing safaris in Kidepo and Murchison parks in the northern part of the country. Additionally, bird watchers will be thrilled to witness a diverse range of migratory birds arriving in the area during this time.

How to see primates

Water safaris

Uganda offers numerous non-conventional safari experiences with fantastic wildlife encounters. Boat safaris rid you of the traditional 4x4 truck to cruise the Kazinga Channel and Victoria Nile and get you so close to elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and many savannah animals converging at river shores daily. Between watching chimps and trekking gorillas, you can fix in a water safari on Kazinga Channel, since it's located between the two primate attractions.

Water safaris and boat rides to see animals and wildlife

Classic safari drives

Uganda offers classic safari drives in four savannah parks; Kidepo Valley in the extreme northeast, scenic Murchison Falls surrounding the meandering Nile, Queen Elizabeth, and Lake Mburo, very famous on the southwestern gorilla tour route. Game drive sightings include familiar African safari players like lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, hippos, giraffes, and antelopes.

Shoebill bird watching safaris in Uganda

Bird watching

Uganda is a paradise for bird watchers, with over 1,000 bird species within its borders. The country's diverse habitats, including rainforests, wetlands, and savannahs, provide ideal conditions for various birds. Visitors can expect to see rare and exotic species such as the prehistoric shoebill, African green broadbill, and the great blue turaco.

A karamojong man - cultural encounters and experiences in Uganda

Cultural experiences

Uganda's warm and welcoming people make cultural experiences truly unforgettable. With over 50 distinct tribes and languages, visitors can explore traditional villages and learn traditions, dress, music, dance, art, and craft. Highlights include the Batwa Experience, close to the gorillas, Kamojong & Ike in the remote northeast, and Kampala metropolitan city.

What you must know about Uganda

Uganda is a low-key safari destination with few tourist crowds, making it ideal for off-the-beaten-path adventures. Group tours are small, and popular game-viewing circuits retain an unconstrained atmosphere. The country's numerous reserves and attractions are easily accessible to independent travelers on a limited budget. Uganda also has a healthy reputation regarding crime directed at tourists, making it one of the safest countries to visit in Africa. Don't even worry about visiting Uganda as an LGBTQ traveler; Ugandans, both in the tourist industry and on the street, are warm, friendly, and relaxed hosts who don't care about visitors' sexual orientation. Their genuine hospitality is a highlight of any visit to Uganda.

Security & Traditions

Uganda is a safe destination for tourists, but petty theft and muggings can occur, especially at night, so travelers should avoid wandering alone in urban areas. While Ugandans are generally tolerant, they hold traditional beliefs, and public displays of affection may be frowned upon. LGBTQ+ travelers can visit the country without incident as long as they avoid demanding their rights during their vacation, as Ugandans do not police sexuality. Overall, visitors to Uganda can have a safe and enjoyable trip by being aware of their surroundings and respecting local customs.

To visit Uganda as a tourist, a single-entry, three-month visa is required, which costs US$50. All visa applications must be made through the Uganda immigration online system at visas.immigration.go.ug , and require a completed application form, two passport-size photos, and the correct visa fee paid at least a week before travel. Obtaining a visa on arrival at Entebbe International Airport is no longer possible. Additionally, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your intended travel date and contain at least one blank page.

Health & Vaccines

While there are no COVID-19 requirements for visitors to Uganda, proof of yellow fever vaccination is mandatory. The Ministry of Health also recommends Hepatitis A and B vaccinations for all visitors, and adventure travelers to rural areas should consider taking the typhoid vaccine. Malaria is a significant health risk in Uganda, so it's essential to consult with your doctor to obtain antimalarial pills before your trip. To avoid mosquito bites, sleep under a mosquito net at night and wear insect repellent during the day. Additionally, it's best to drink bottled or filtered water to stay healthy during your stay.

Phone & Internet Connection

Entebbe, Kampala, and other large towns and most tourist areas have good phone network coverage. However, signal strength can be variable in some remote areas. Local SIM cards are affordable, and international calling bundles make it easy to stay connected to home. It's best to have your mobile phone unlocked to use local sim-cards before arriving in Uganda; although unlocking services are available in Kampala, this may delay your travel plans. Wi-Fi is widely available in almost all lodges in the countryside, although the connection quality may vary.

Best Time To Go

Uganda is a year-round destination, with an average altitude of around 1,000m and a location squarely on the equator that helps to moderate the heat. The highest rainfall occurs between March and May and October and November, but gorilla sightings are still possible during these months, albeit with slippery and slower trekking conditions. However, this time is an excellent opportunity to save money on accommodation and gorilla permits. The best time to visit Uganda is from June to September, which is the peak season. Despite this, Uganda remains largely unaffected by mass tourism, and visitors can enjoy the country's attractions without worrying about crowds.

Uganda's currency is the Uganda shilling (UGX), which has an exchange rate of about USD 3,500 to $1. While larger hotels and tour companies may accept U.S. dollars and credit cards, local shops and restaurants typically only accept payment in shillings. To obtain local currency, you can withdraw money from ATMs in large towns or exchange your U.S. dollars at the airport, foreign exchange branches (known locally as forex), and local banks. US$50 and US$100 bills generally fetch better exchange rates, while bills printed before 2006 may not be accepted. It's best to use later bills to get the best exchange rates.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. Read more on the breakdown of these costs below.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day.

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris.

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February.

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions.

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service.

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want.

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit.

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

The Best African Safari Destinations

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly.

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

  • Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
  • Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
  • Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
  • Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent.

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

  • Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
  • Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas.
  • Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
  • Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well.

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

  • Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
  • Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
  • The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans.
  • Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.

Staying at Abu Camp gets you up close and personal with elephants. Since the camp is next to a lagoon, there is a herd of elephants that call this camp home. There’s even a chance to sleep in the elephant boma for the ultimate experience. You can also experience every type of safari you want, whether it’s a game drive or a boat safari.

Abu Camp has super comfy accommodations with modern furnishings and all the luxuries you would see in any other hotel. There’s a plunge pool to cool off during the day while you wait for your evening safari. Each private canvas tent overlooks the Delta for amazing views.

Tanzania is home to the well-known Serengeti, known for the safaris that explore the great herd. It is also the home to Mount Kilimanjaro, where the most adventurous can summit its peak. This place is basically the home of everything you think of when someone says “Africa.” The most popular safari parks in Tanzania are:

  • Serengeti National Park- The world’s most popular destination for a safari.
  • Ruaha National Park- The largest park in Tanzania with many elephants and giraffes.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area- Home to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find the largest population of lions in the world .
  • Lake Manyara National Park- Home to a massive lake where you can spot animals looking for water during the dry s eason.
  • Mikumi National Park- Mostly flat grassland, making it easy to spot wildlife.

For the best views over the Serengeti day and night, Klein’s Camp is a great place to stay for your safari. It is situated just on the border of the national park, so they are one of the only camps to offer open-air night drives. It is also in the perfect position to watch over the Serengeti from your room.

Klein’s camp feels extremely exclusive because they have 10,000 hectares of privately leased land. You can go offroading, go any time of day, or follow a zebra trail. They will also take you on specialized photography tours and visit the Maasai village to see their unique culture.

South Africa

South Africa is where you want to go to save a few dollars. There is plenty of wildlife, but it has better infrastructure than most other safari destinations. That means there’s more opportunity to do a self-guided tour, which saves you tons. There are also great guided tours too. The best reserves in South Africa are:

  • Kruger National Park- The most popular park in South Africa with the big five.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve- A malaria-free, affordable park with rare wild dogs.
  • Sabi Sands Game reserve- A private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve- Famous for cheetah sightings.
  • Tswalu Kalahari Reserve- The largest private game reserve in South Africa.

If you want to stay in luxury on your South African safari, Loapi Tented Camp gives you the safari aesthetic. However, it comes complete with a butler, fully stocked kitchens, and an environmentally friendly plunge pool. Each of the six accommodations has plenty of space between each, giving you a secluded feel.

Each safari home has its own butler, a private chef to cook all your meals en-suite, a study with wifi, a full bar, and indoor/outdoor showers. You will also get your own safari vehicle with a private tour guide to take you out every evening. If you don’t feel like taking a vehicle out, go horseback instead.
