10 Top Things To Do In Gliwice

Home to less than 200,000 people, Gliwice is a small city in southern Poland. The town is about 100 km from Krakow and 350 km from Warsaw . It may surprise you to know that Gliwice is home to the tallest wooden structure in Europe . Another interesting fact is that the creator of the popular Nivea brand products, Oskar Troplowitz , is a native of Gliwice.

Though Gliwice is a lesser-known tourist destination in Poland, there are lots of cool things to see and do here. From the Palm House brimming with colorful plants to the gorgeous Old Town with breathtaking sights and attractions, Gliwice will leave you stuck in awe. What’s more, you’ll find fewer tourists and enjoy the opportunity of exploring the authentic, unspoiled side of the city. Check out the list of the 10 top things to do here.

1. Wander Round the Old Town Square

If you’re in Gliwice, the Old Town Square is not to be missed. The Market Square (Rynek) is brimming with cafes, restaurants, shops, tourist information boards, and perfect for people watching.

Great place to see and learn about the authentic local side of Gliwice. Right in the center of the Old Town Square is the City Hall , which hosts the meetings of the city Council and sometimes used for wedding ceremonies.

Besides, you’ll find the Neptune Fountain here. Take a stroll around the small yet charming Old Town to discover its hidden treasures.

Gliwice Old Town

2. Gliwice Radio Tower

Gliwice Radio Tower is a gorgeous sight to behold in the city. Many tourists jokingly compare this tall wooden radio tower with the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but the truth is it’s nowhere near.

However, this communications tower played a crucial role in shaping the history of Gliwice. It is an iconic symbol in the city, thanks in part to the role it played in the Second World War.

Standing at about 118 meters from ground level, it is the tallest wooden structure in Europe . The wooden transmission tower is supposedly the only radio tower made of wood in the world today.

Gliwice Radio Station

3. Palm House

The Palm House, located in Chopin Park , has five pavilions with colorful plants, aquariums, and ponds with beautiful marine creatures. Take a leisure stroll around the Palm House to explore the wonders within.

Relax on one of the benches, enjoy the cool breeze, admire the palm trees, exotic plants, and banana trees that call this place home, and listen to the sounds of chirping birds.

If you seek a spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the Palm House is the place to be. Regardless of the time of year, the Palm House is always an exciting spot to visit.

4. Piast Castle Museum

There’s an old saying which says you don’t judge a book by its cover. The same applies to the Piast Castle . The castle is one of the city’s oldest buildings dating back to the 14th century.

On the outside, the castle is not as impressive compared to others in Poland, but on the inside is an incredible museum with loads of captivating exhibits.

The best part is that it is one of the free things to do in Gliwice. Access to the museum is free. The museum features ancient vessels, a mammoth skeleton, and many more.

If you’d like to see how the city looked like in the time of old, the Piast Castle Museum will take you back in time with its old photographs, folk costumes and lots more. Add this to your list of things to do if you’re on a budget.

5. Church of All Saints

Located in the Old Town is the Church of All Saints, which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Standing at about 63 meters high, the church is another beautiful symbol of the Gliwice skyline.

You can see it from the Market Square. Much of the interior decors date back to the 15th century. In the church is the main altar beautifully designed with sculptures and an image of Mary surrounded by saints. Cathedrals’ architecture will captivate everyone.

6. Chopin-Park

Home to the famous Palm House, Chopin Park, has several interesting things to do that will keep you busy for a few more hours. The park is home to beautiful sculptures of Lying Lions designed by renowned sculpture Johann Gottfried Schadow .

Here, you will also find a monument made of white marble dedicated to Frederic Chopin . Rest on the benches and enjoy relaxing time in the midst of nature.

Chopin Park Gliwice

7. Cathedral of St’s Peter and Paul

Just within proximity to the Old Town and the Piast Castle Museum is the impressive Cathedral Church of St’s. Peter and Paul. This church is a must-see for everyone. The cathedral was built in the early 18th century and is home to one of the finest organs in the world .

Make sure your visit coincides with the concerts and events held here so that you can appreciate the church even more. Right next to the cathedral is the beautiful fountain with the sculpture ‘Boy with Swan’ designed by Theodore Kalide . You can always visit the fountain after time exploring the cathedral.

8. Culture and Recreation Park

Within a few distances away from the Old Town is a forest with wildlife including hares, deer, and boars. Stretched across 200 hectares, the Culture and Recreation Park is indeed a significant woodland that was first discovered in the Middle Ages.

As development enveloped Gliwice, the forest was preserved and protected. This is another interesting spot where you can spend time with Mother Nature.

9. New Jewish Cemetery

Built-in 1902, the Jewish Cemetery is home to more than 600 well-preserved tombstones. It also has a monument built-in 1932.

The cemetery is built in honor of the Jewish soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. Visit the cemetery to pay your respect to the lost souls.

10. Guido Coal Mine

If you think you have seen it all in Gliwice and still have more time, then consider taking an underground adventure to Guido Coal Mine . Located in Zabrze, 10 km from Gliwice, the Guido Coal Mine is the oldest in the region and worth visiting.

It has two mining levels at 170 and 320 meters below the surface. You’ll get there with the aid of an elevator. The experience at both levels is out of this world.

To get the most out of your trip to the coal mine, you need a knowledgeable tour guide. Here, you will learn many things about mining and see some of the hazards that miners face. Also, there are lots of interesting sights here, including the beautifully designed St. Barbara’s chapel.

How to get to Victoria

Unless you are planning on a driving holiday, the best option is to fly to Melbourne; buses and trains cost almost the same as flights and take eight times as long to get there.

Drive  – Melbourne is a nine or 10-hour drive from Sydney along the inland road and more like 13 hours of driving time along the coast road. It is best to tackle the coast route over a couple of days. The drive from Adelaide takes about 8 hours, 12 hours if you travel via the coast and Great Ocean Road. From elsewhere, flying is your best option.

Bus  – Buses from Sydney take 12 hours. The bus from Adelaide takes 10-11 hours. Check Murrays and Greyhounds website for the best prices.

Train  – The train service from Sydney takes 11 hours. There are two services per day, an overnight and a day train. The cheapest place to book your ticket is directly on their website. From Adelaide, it’s a 10.5 hr trip. All trains terminate at Spencer Street Station.

Fly  – There are regular flights from most states; the Sydney to Melbourne route is the busiest in Australia. Because of this, flights are costly at the beginning and end of the day. The Skybus from Tullamarine takes about 20 minutes; return tickets are slightly cheaper than singles.

International Airports in Victoria

  • Melbourne Tullamarine – Flights from all continents
  • Avalon – Flights from Kuala Lumpur and Bali

Domestic Airports in Victoria

  • Melbourne – (MEL)  Tullamarine  – daily flights from all Australian states.
  • Melbourne – (AVV) Avalon – This airport is in Geelong and services budget airlines. Flights from Sydney, Adelaide and the Gold Coast land here. It can be a good choice for a Great Ocean Road trip as this puts you right at the beginning of the road.

How to get Around Victoria

Public transport.

Melbourne has an excellent regional train network,  VLine , that will get you to many of the regions listed above. Domestic air travel is not necessary for this small state. To access public transport, you will need to download the  Myki app  or buy a rechargeable card on arrival in Melbourne. Myki is used on Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses and VLine services to most places within a few hours of the city. Buses in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Seymour and the Latrobe Valley also use Myki.

If you have not driven in Australia before, I suggest reading our  tips for driving in the land Downunder.  Also, be sure to read up on “ hook turns ” so there are no ugly incidents with trams you may encounter.

Driving Distances

  • Melbourne to Port Campbell – 4hrs 30 via the coast
  • Melbourne to Phillip Island – 1 hr 44m
  • Melbourne to Ballarat – 1hr 30m
  • Melbourne to Wilson’s Promontory – 3hrs
  • Melbourne to Mount Hotham – 4hrs 30m

Rideshare  – Rideshare services are legal and regulated in Melbourne; you will find both Uber and Ola have the most coverage. Didi also operates in Melbourne.

World Health Organization confirms Australia's first human case of H5N1 bird flu likely came from India

Chickens stick their heads out from cages at a farm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed the child who contracted Australia's first human case of a "severe" subtype of bird flu was likely exposed during a trip to India last month.

The WHO said on Friday, local time, that genetic sequencing showed the avian influenza virus was H5N1 — a strain that circulates in South-East Asia and has been detected in previous human infections and in poultry.

"Although the source of exposure to the virus in this case is currently unknown, the exposure likely occurred in India, where the case had travelled, and where this clade of A(H5N1) viruses has been detected in birds in the past," it said in a statement .

The two-year-old girl from Victoria had travelled to Kolkata in India's state of West Bengal from February 12 to February 19, returning to Australia on March 1, the WHO said.

The child was hospitalised on March 2 and remained there for more than two weeks before making a "full recovery", according to Victoria's health department.

The WHO said, as of May 22, no close family contacts in Australia or India had developed symptoms.

"Additional information provided by the family indicates that the case did not travel outside of Kolkata, India, and did not have any known exposure to sick persons or animals while in India."

Victoria's Chief Health Officer, Clare Looker, had previously said it was unclear how the child had picked up the virus, but noted when humans contracted H5N1, it was usually from exposure to poultry.

"So either visiting poultry farms or live wet markets, which have birds at them, or if they've had a lot of contact with domesticated birds," she said.

"Occasionally, people can also get it from handling the meat or eggs of infected birds.

"We couldn't identify a clear event that led to this child's infection, but we suspect it's one of those things."

Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease expert at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said while it would be difficult to do months after the fact, an investigation was needed to see if the child was in contact with poultry or other birds.

"H5N1 viruses do not transmit efficiently between humans and I suspect there's an occult animal exposure that led to the infection," Dr Adalja said.

WHO advises against travel restrictions

The WHO said human infection of H5N1 can cause "severe disease" and has "a high mortality rate".

From 2003 to 2023, a total of 246 cases of human infection with H5N1 have been reported from four countries within the western Pacific region, according to the WHO. Of these cases, 138 were fatal.

"These A(H5N1) influenza viruses, belonging to different genetic groups, do not easily infect humans, and human-to-human transmission thus far appears unusual," the WHO said.

"As the virus continues to circulate in poultry, particularly in rural areas, the potential for further sporadic human cases remains."

The organisation advised the public to avoid contact with high-risk environments such as live animal markets and farms, as well as live poultry or surfaces that might be contaminated by poultry droppings.

"WHO advises against implementing travel or trade restrictions based on the current information available on this event," it said.

"WHO does not advise special traveller screening at points of entry or other restrictions due to the current situation of influenza viruses at the human-animal interface."

It said any person who had exposure to potentially infected animals or contaminated environments, and who felt unwell, should seek health care promptly and limit exposure to others.

Editor's note (08/06/2024): This story was updated to give the correct location of Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal, not in western India.
