Visiting Eton and the College

Visiting eton college, small group tours and around eton town.

Eton College

Eton College is one of England's most eminent public schools and is famous world-wide. Those who have attended Eton reads like a who's who list of the UK with royalty, prime ministers and many other leaders.

In recent years these have included people as diverse as princes William and Harry, David Cameron, Ian Fleming, Bear Grylls and George Orwell.

Eton College official website

Eton College is at the top end of Eton High Street, on the other side of the river from Windsor. Just a fifteen minute stroll from Windsor Castle and a great way to complement your visit to Windsor.

Eton College   Eton College tours   Eton Town

Eton College

Today Eton College is a secondary school (a high school in the American sense) for approximately 1,290 boys between the ages of 13 and 18, all of whom are boarders. Eton College was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI.

All boys have a uniform of black tailcoat (or morning coat) and waistcoat, false-collar and pin striped trousers. All students wear a white tie. This uniform is not for special occasions, it is worn at all times and if you visit during term time, you will see the boys walking around.

When a boy comes to Eton he will join a house of just over 50 boys. His house will be the hub of his life at Eton for the next five years. Each house is under the care of a house master, who will look after him, support him and, if necessary, make sure he toes-the-line. He will be the main point of contact with the school for a boy's parents.

Eton College - tours for the public

Small group public tours focus on the historic heart of Eton College, featuring many of the Foundation buildings and objects from the College Collections. These only operate between May and early September on Friday afternoons.

For full details of the public tours, including prices and operating dates please use the Eton link at the very top of this page.

Eton High Street With Windsor Castle in Background

You walk across to Eton over Eton Bridge, a pedestrian bridge that used to be the main way into Windsor in the days when horse was the main overland transport.

The first part of the High Street is a mix of cheaper tea rooms, pubs and lots of antique, painting and book shops. The shops here seem to come and go quite quickly. You can also see Eton rowing club fronting the river.

You soon come to the Cockpit Inn on your right, once thought to be where cock fighting was performed, but in fact a rear slaughterhouse. This is a typical example of 15th-century timber framed architecture, dating from 1420.

On your left is the Christopher Hotel, an historic hotel originally dating from 1511. You can still see the wide entrance where the original horse carriages entered.

A little further on your left set back in grounds is a church, St. John the Evangelist, dating from 1852 and is of Victorian Gothic design. The foundation stone was laid by Prince Albert. The building was recently renovated to become the local surgery and Eton College sanatorium. A chapel remains on the upper level.

The next section of the High Street is like a small village, with post office, small school, Barclays Bank etc.

As you cross Baldwin's bridge the High Street changes again in character. Retail outlets here are targeted at the school. There are several 'gentleman's' outfitters with clothing in the windows most people would associate with a bygone stage. In one, you can see the tailors working, still using old hand sewing machines.

There is also a branch of the exclusive Coutts Bank. You now enter an area of impressive buildings of the Eton College campus. The entrance for the tours is down by the Windsor side of the church on your right, at the back of the church. There are extensive Eton sports fields north of the campus with many public footpaths cutting through them.

Eton College

Eton College is a world-renowned public school , and sits in the heart of Eton town, England.

It was founded in 1440 by  Henry VI  under the name  Kynge’s College of Our Ladye of Eton besyde Windesore , intended as a sister institution to King’s College, Cambridge, making it the 18th-oldest Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) school. Eton College is particularly well-known for its history, wealth, and notable alumni, called  Old Etonians .

Eton is one of only three  public schools , along with Harrow (founded in 1572) and Radley (founded in 1847), to retain the boys-only, boarding-only tradition, which means that its boys live at the school seven days a week during term-time.

Eton College has educated  prime ministers , world leaders, Nobel laureates, Academy Award and BAFTA award-winning actors, and generations of the  aristocracy .

Moscow bishop: How I helped Eton schoolboys visit Russia

The meeting between President Putin and the pupils from the prestigious UK private school lasted for about 30 minutes and took place in late August, according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

The meeting between President Putin and the pupils from the prestigious UK private school lasted for about 30 minutes and took place in late August, according to presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov.

Question: Your Grace, back in March you were invited to give some lectures in Eton. Who was behind your visit there?

Bishop Tikhon: As far as I know, the visit was the pupils’ idea, with their invitation later approved by the provost of Eton.

Q: How were you received by the college?

B.T.: They gave me a very warm welcome. After the lectures were finished, I was asked numerous questions about Russia’s history, its current situation, Russian and English literature and culture, and, of course, about the faith, the Orthodox Christianity. I must note one of the reasons why I was invited was because some of the pupils had read my book Everyday Saints , which has been translated into English.

Revealing secret lives of saints in Russia's orthodox literature

At the end of our meeting, the boys asked if I could help them with visiting Russia. I said that I would gladly extend my hospitality to them in Moscow and Stretensky Monastery. Then they asked if they could meet President Putin. That was an unexpected inquiry, to put it mildly. I responded by saying that pulling that off would not be an easy task at all. Then the boys asked: “Then what do we need to do?” “The same thing people do when they want to meet a person they are not acquainted with: Write him a letter and request a meeting,” I said. So the boys did just that, and I passed their letter – which was very polite and sincere – to the International Department of the Presidential Executive Office.

On Sept. 1 presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the meeting was a part of a private trip of Eton students. Source: Pravoslavie.ru

Q: But some Western media reported the preparations for the trip were made in total secrecy.

B.T.: This isn’t true. Right after I learned that the boys wanted to go to Russia and meet our president, I notified the Eton authorities about it. Also, before I passed the boys’ letter to the Presidential Executive Office, I asked for permission to do that from the college’s provost, and such permission was granted. Some time later, after the Russian side had already approved the meeting tentatively, Ambassador of Russia to the United Kingdom Alexander Yakovenko informed the Eton provost about the progress in the endeavor.

The Eton authorities considered two options for the visit, letting them go as individuals on a private trip, or sending them as an official delegation, and eventually, they decided not to do it officially. After the boys learned about this, they said: “Then we’ll go by ourselves.” This is how they arrived in Russia.

Their visit program included a brief stay both in Moscow and in St. Petersburg and some sightseeing. More importantly, though, they met their Russian peers. These were students from Lomonosov Moscow State University, people from some other universities that happened to be staying in Moscow during their summer vacation time, and students from our own Sretenskaya seminary who spoke English fluently.

Then they had a meeting with the president, which was closed to anybody but Mr. Putin and the boys. We only know what exactly they talked about thanks to the revelations of the boys, since they published all their fresh impressions on social media.

For whom the bell tolls: Russia’s age-old relationship with church chimes

In the evening of the same day, we sent them off to St. Petersburg, where they stayed for a day and a half before going back to England. I think the boys were very happy with their trip. Based on their reactions, it made a great impression on them, and we were pleased to receive them.

Q: The issue of who paid for the trip was also discussed by the media.

B.T.: These were all children of wealthy parents, so there was no problem there. Besides, one of the Russian organizations involved in supporting student projects payed for the airline tickets – it was economy class, by the way – and simple rooms (it was a good hotel, but they gave great discounts). We at the Sretensky Monastery, were of course happy to have them over, and we set a table for them. The same goes for all the other places they visited.

According to Peskov, it was a private meeting behind closed doors. The pupils were free to communicate with the Russian president. Source: Pravoslavie.ru

Q: What kind of impression did the young Brits make on you?

B.T.: Well, we might have got lucky to have invited the right boys, but it will be no exaggeration if I say that they are the best of everything the United Kingdom makes today, the most respectable product to be released under the “Made in Britain” label. And in that sense, as a teacher and a provost, I can only express my admiration and respect for their parents, their teachers, and their mentors.

Eton College is an outstanding school. The most striking thing isn’t even the ultra-high level of academic training they maintain, but rather the very efficient system of encouraging and developing the schoolboys’ creative talent. This experience deserves to be respected and closely examined on our part.

At the same time, the young men are very open, sincere and modest (this last quality, as it turns out, is something that is fostered in Etonians intentionally), which breaks all our stereotypes about how prim and arrogant the pupils of the college supposedly are. For instance, they asked our seminary students to sing, and then they just stood up and started singing Jerusalem with them, this famous song that can be seen as an unofficial anthem of Great Britain. And you could see how this song touches the strings of their hearts.

The trip was certainly a real adventure for the boys. And I would like to congratulate them: Their adventure was a success, and I believe it was interesting, important and unforgettable for them.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — President Vladimir Putin warned Germany on Wednesday that the use of its weapons by Ukraine to strike inside Russia would mark a “dangerous step,” and he said Moscow could, in turn, provide long-range arms to others to strike Western targets.

Such action by the West will further undermine international security and could lead to “very serious problems,” he said, speaking to senior news leaders of international news agencies, including The Associated Press.

“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin added.

Because using such Western weapons involves military personnel of those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets, Putin said Moscow could take “asymmetrical” steps elsewhere in the world.

“If they consider it possible to deliver such weapons to the combat zone to launch strikes on our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same type to some regions of the world where they can be used to launch strikes on sensitive facilities of the countries that do it to Russia?” he said.

“We will think about it,” he told the journalists on the sidelines of the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Germany joined the United States recently in authorizing Ukraine to hit some targets on Russian soil with the long-range weapons they are supplying to Kyiv. The deliveries of German tanks to Ukraine came as a shock to many in Russia, he said.

“Now if they use missiles to strike facilities on the Russian territory, it will completely ruin Russian-German relations,” he said.

On Wednesday, a Western official and a U.S. senator said Ukraine has used U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia under newly approved guidance from President Joe Biden. It allows American arms to be used for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv , Ukraine’s second-largest city. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Taking questions from international journalists for the first time since his inauguration last month to a fifth term, Putin also said nothing will change in terms of Russia-U.S. relations regardless of whether Biden or Donald Trump wins the American presidential election in November.

“We will work with any president the American people elect,” Putin said.

“I say absolutely sincerely, I wouldn’t say that we believe that after the election something will change on the Russian track in the American politics,” he added. “We don’t think so. We think nothing that serious will happen.”

Putin also said Trump’s felony conviction at his hush money trial last week was the result of “the use of the court system as part of the internal political struggle.”

The Russian leader faced questions on various topics, although the more than two years of fighting in Ukraine dominated the session.

Putin claimed the West had opportunities to end the fighting in Ukraine but did not act on them, citing a letter he once supposedly wrote to Biden that said hostilities could end in two or three months if Washington stopped supplying Kyiv with weapons.

Asked about Russian military losses, Putin said that no country would reveal that information during hostilities but claimed without providing details that Ukraine’s casualties are five times greater than Russia’s.

He also said Ukraine has more than 1,300 Russian troops in captivity, while more than 6,400 Ukrainian soldiers are being held in Russia.

The claims could not be independently verified.

On other topics, Putin said the U.S. is “taking energetic steps” to secure the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, an American jailed over a year ago while on a reporting trip and charged with espionage. Gershkovich, his employer and the U.S. have denied the allegations, and Washington has declared him to be wrongfully detained.

Putin said that any such releases “aren’t decided via mass media” but through a “discreet, calm and professional approach.”

“And they certainly should be decided only on the basis of reciprocity,” he added, an allusion to a potential prisoner swap.

Putin has used the St. Petersburg forum as a showcase for touting Russia’s development and seeking investors. While meetings with journalists were part of previous sessions, he has not taken questions from Western journalists at the St. Petersburg event since sending troops to Ukraine.

Last year, journalists from countries that Russia regards as unfriendly — including the U.S., the U.K. and the European Union — were not invited, and Western officials and investors also steered clear of the session after wide-ranging sanctions were imposed on Moscow over Ukraine.

Cellphone expert testifies missing data benefits University of Idaho murder suspect

A cellphone analyst suggested at a pretrial hearing Thursday that he has been stymied by law enforcement's disorganized data collection and recordkeeping in the case against Bryan Kohberger, the graduate student accused in the fatal stabbings of four Idaho college students .

Sy Ray , whom Kohberger's defense team plans to call as an expert witness at trial, said his review of the evidence provided by the FBI and police so far shows not all of the cellphone data extracted from Kohberger's phone around the time of the murders in 2022 was mapped.

He further testified that it's crucial that he receive all of the AT&T source data and related information for him to verify, given that prosecutors in Latah County are pinning Kohberger to the location of the killings, in part, by his cellphone use and cell tower records.

"It is a terrible practice to justify probable cause with these very detailed call detail records that give breadcrumb-like trails for individuals and then not map it," Ray said.

Bryan Kohberger enters the courtroom for his arraignment hearing in Latah County District Court, Monday, May 22, 2023, in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger is accused of killing four University of Idaho students in November 2022.

"Because of the piecemealing of the data, because of the missing data, because of the data I'm reviewing that is incredibly inaccurate, everything that is missing is absolutely in benefit of the defense right now," Ray testified, adding, "There are other reports that are missing that I can't tell you are benefiting of Mr. Kohberger or the state."

He added that it's unclear why certain data is unavailable: "Is this human error? Is it accidental? Is it intentional?"

What he has seen so far, he said, appears to be "exculpatory" to Kohberger.

Ray, a former police detective in Arizona, testified that he typically has been an expert witness for prosecutors in criminal cases. His expertise has previously come under scrutiny .

Earlier in Thursday's hearing, a lead investigator with the Moscow Police Department testified that thousands of hours of video were collected in relation to a Hyundai Elantra that prosecutors say Kohberger was driving when he left his apartment in Washington state, 9½ miles from where the murders took place in Moscow, Idaho.

Thursday's testimony was part of an ongoing attempt by the defense to ask the judge to compel prosecutors to turn over certain evidence in the discovery phase. DNA experts were expected to be called during a later hearing closed to the public. Prosecutors have argued that they aren’t purposefully withholding information.

The slow pace of the pretrial hearings and the discussions hanging over such a high-profile case have only delayed the trial and pushed a trial date back to spring or summer 2025 — frustrating families of the victims , who say their ability to heal has been impeded. Documents filed Friday also showed that a hearing on whether to move the trial out of Latah County, initially scheduled for late June, has been further delayed to Aug. 29.

The family of Kaylee Goncalves, one of the murdered students, mocked Thursday's hearing as "business as usual."

"The defense claiming they haven't received all the evidence in the case and the prosecution stating, 'We can't give it if we don't have it,'" the Goncalves family said in a statement.

"The hearings have become a Wild West of statements, witnesses, issues, hand holding of the attorneys and excuses for continued delay," they said, adding that "the victims' families want justice, but just as importantly, we want the case to move forward."

Three of the victims — Goncalves, 21; Madison Mogen, 21; and Xana Kernodle, 20 — lived in an apartment house near the University of Idaho, where they were students. Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin, 20, had been staying over and was also killed early Nov. 13, 2022.

In an affidavit following Kohberger's arrest weeks after the killings, prosecutors said he was linked to the scene through  male DNA discovered on a knife sheath  left at the victims' apartment house. Investigators also said his cellphone use and video surveillance connected him to the crime.

Kohberger's a libi defense maintains that he would go for nighttime drives and that they only increased during the school year.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — President Vladimir Putin warned Wednesday that Russia could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.

Putin also reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.

The recent actions by the West will further undermine international security and could lead to “very serious problems,” he said, taking questions from international journalists — something that has become extremely rare since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine.

“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin added.

The United States and Germany recently authorized Ukraine to hit some targets on Russian soil with the long-range weapons they are supplying to Kyiv.

Putin claimed that using some Western-supplied weapons involves military personnel of those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets, and therefore he said Moscow could take “asymmetrical” steps elsewhere in the world. The U.S. military said it does not control the missiles it provides to Ukraine or the targets.

Asked whether Russia could resort to using nuclear arms, Putin said the conditions for utilizing that arsenal are clearly spelled out in Moscow’s security doctrine.

“For some reason, they believe in the West that Russia will never use it,” he said.

“Look at what is written there,” he said of Russia’s nuclear doctrine. “If somebody’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal.”

Even Russia’s battlefield nuclear weapons are much more powerful than what the U.S. used against Japan in World War II, Putin said.

Speaking to senior news leaders of international news agencies, including The Associated Press, for more than three hours, Putin also said nothing will change in terms of Russia-U.S. relations regardless of whether Biden or Donald Trump wins the American presidential election in November.

Prospective students and their families taking a guided tour of UNH

Let your student take the lead

We get it. You have lots of questions to ask and concerns about where your student will live and what they’ll eat. However, this tour is the beginning of your student’s independence in college. Feel free to ask your own questions, but let your student take the lead in exploring the areas of campus they are most interested in and interacting with the tour guide and other prospective students .

Exploring the UNH campus

Exploring the UNH campus

Prioritize what you see

College tours can be overwhelming and it’s unlikely you’ll see the entire campus during your visit, so beforehand,  sit down with your student and compile a list of the places they most want to see on campus. Then, plan your visit accordingly. For example, if they are most interested in learning more about their prospective major and are interested to see where they will eat, see if you can schedule an academic information session and plan to eat at the dining hall after your tour.

Plan your questions

You’ll spend the day absorbing a lot, so it may be helpful to write out a list of questions ahead of time. Sit down with your student and think about what you want to ask. If a current student will lead your tour, ask your student to think of questions they have about future college life or advice they would like for transitioning to college.

Keep exploring after the tour

If you have time after the tour, ask the admissions office what else they recommend you see or pick up a campus map. You may want to head to the campus bookstore to grab some swag, try a meal in the dining hall or explore the shops and restaurants in the college downtown. This will help you and your student get an authentic feel for what the campus is like.
