Fort Lauderdale is on the verge of snatching Miami’s crown as Florida’s coolest city, and thanks to a number of airlines – Norwegian recently increased flights to the destination and British Airways adds a service in July – it’s also easily accessible.

Its golden beaches are less crowded than Miami’s but just as spectacular, while in the downtown area you’ll find independent boutiques squeezed alongside art galleries and bars with spacious verandas.

Venture farther afield and you’ll discover America’s largest outlet mall and an alligator-filled wildlife park. What’s not to love?

fl11

09.00: Start the day with breakfast on the terrace of downtown’s Riverside Hotel; the eggs benedict is legendary. Afterwards, get your bearings with a stroll along boutique-filled East Las Olas Boulevard, which stretches from the heart of Fort Lauderdale to the beach. Head west to check out the nearby NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale and the Museum of Discovery and Science, where the latest addition is the EcoDiscovery Center, filled with hands-on exhibits younger visitors will love.

11.00: Wander over to Fat Village for a caffeine fix. The ‘Fat’ stands for Flagler Arts and Technology, and this innovative arts district was founded by Alabamian art collector Doug McCraw. It’s one of the city’s most up-and-coming areas and it’s filled with galleries, artists’ studios and funky coffee shops, including Brew Urban Cafe, where the floor-to-ceiling shelves heave with thousands of books. Don’t forget to visit Brew’s very own boutique, tucked inside a vintage airstream trailer.

13.00: Back in downtown, restore energy levels at Timpano at 450 E Las Olas Blvd. The lunch menu at this Italian chophouse is filled with Mediterranean classics given a Floridian twist: calamari fritto with sweet pomodoro sauce, fire-roasted meatballs and sea salt-sprinkled flatbreads. Afterwards, walk off your excesses with a stroll to the beach. It takes about 40 minutes (although there’s a ‘trolley’ if you’re feeling lazy) and the route includes several bridges spanning Fort Lauderdale’s waterways.

15.30: After a wander along the beach, head north to the plantation-style Bonnet House (admission is £16 for adults, £13 for students, free for children), listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. It’s the former home of artist Frederic Clay Bartlett, who was given this chunk of land by his father-in-law in 1919. The gardens have one of the finest orchid collections in the US and the sprawling property is filled with artworks and sculptures from all over the world. The house can be explored on guided tours, which run from Tuesday to Sunday between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

18.00: The recently revamped W Fort Lauderdale is the perfect place for dinner and a sundowner. It’s achingly cool; the minimalist foyer has the feel of a modern art gallery and the pièce de résistance can be found in the hotel’s Steak 954 restaurant – a 4.5-metre aquarium tank filled with glowing jellyfish. There’s some delicious seafood on offer but it’s a menu designed for meat lovers, who can choose from American Wagyu steaks, 40-day dry-aged ribeyes and Colorado lamb chops.

20.00: After dinner, treat yourself to a cocktail at Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits just down the road at the Ritz-Carlton. Prohibition-era rum-runners were apparently the inspiration for the bar’s decor, so it’s not hard to work out which spirit dominates the menu.

fl5

09.00: Time for some retail therapy. Set 17 miles from Fort Lauderdale, Sawgrass Mills is America’s largest outlet mall. The shuttle service doesn’t extend to Fort Lauderdale, but an Uber will cost you around $24 each way. A top tip – if you’re an early riser with a hire car, you might just get the ‘Haute Spot’ – Sawgrass Mills’ Swarovski crystal-adorned, bright pink parking space. Our advice? Grab a mall guide and devise a plan of action over brunch at California Pizza Kitchen. The Sawgrass Mills branch is the chain’s flagship and the decor is beautiful.

11.00: Head back to Fort Lauderdale via the Everglades Holiday Park where you can sign up for airboat tours, and spot alligators, iguanas and rare birds. Afterwards, take in the famous alligator show by the Gator Boys – the modern-day Crocodile Dundee-types with their own show on the Animal Planet TV channel. Get lucky and you might just see head Gator Boy Paul Bedard himself, complete with alligator-teeth necklace. None of the creatures have been taken from the wild – they all arrived after turning up in areas where they posed a risk to the public. Tickets cost £24 for adults and £15 for children, and include the airboat tour, alligator show and a souvenir photo.

13.00: Time for a visit to Hollywood. No, not the one in California but the small town a few miles from Fort Lauderdale. Opt for the scenic route and hop on the water taxi – it takes around 70 minutes from downtown, including a transfer at Stop 6 (Hilton Marina). You’ll get a whole new perspective on the area as you drift by riverside mansions, and you’ll also pass the cruise port, filled with enormous cruise ships (Royal Caribbean International’s Harmony of the Seas has been based here since November). The Hollywood drop-off point is the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort. This particular stretch of sand is less crowded than the one at Fort Lauderdale, so it’s a great place to catch some rays before heading into town.

15.00: Like Fort Lauderdale, the centre of Hollywood is set back from the beach so take a taxi for the 10-minute drive. Hollywood’s got a cool, laidback vibe, and the busiest streets branch off from ArtsPark at Young Circle – a huge circular park crammed with fountains and art installations. The narrow boulevards are filled with independent boutiques, quaint cafes and family-run restaurants but an essential stop-off is Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt, where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the ice cream right before your eyes. Look out for the fantastic street art too. Hollywood is home to the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project, and some of the region’s top street artists have created enormous murals in key downtown locations. Finish your exploration with a bite to eat at one of Hollywood’s restaurants. The town has an abundance of eateries specialising in Central and South American cuisine, so whether you’re a fan of ceviche or sopes, you’ll find it all here.

19.00: Spend your final evening toasting Fort Lauderdale’s vibrant nightlife in the downtown area, home to some of the city’s best bars. Start by lining your stomach at the recently opened B Square Burgers & Booze – recommend the McDuck, a duck burger topped with a juniper berry glaze, followed by one of the venue’s potent cocktails or Boozy Shakes.

W Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States

  • Full Review
  • Hip 2017-renovated hotel across the beach
  • Art installations and attention to design throughout
  • Rooms have contemporary beach decor, minibars, and Bluetooth speakers
  • Some units have ocean-view balconies, living spaces, and kitchens
  • Two full-service rooftop pools, and a hot tub
  • Resort fee covers beach chairs and umbrellas, bike rentals, and Wi-Fi
  • Excellent Mexican, steak, and sushi restaurants, plus three bars
  • Bliss Spa and contemporary gym
  • Art, music, and dance events, including poolside DJs
  • Pets welcome (fee)
  • Hefty resort fee (typical for the area)
  • Some units have open-plan glass showers without privacy curtains
  • Loud dance music is common (pro for some)
  • Not all rooms have balconies
  • No food or drink service on the beach

Bottom Line

Renovated in 2017, the 517-room W Fort Lauderdale is a trendy, upscale hotel located across the street from the beach. Young professionals are drawn to the hotel's hip vibe, artsy decor, and lively event schedule. The entire food program, including a steakhouse, Mexican eatery, sushi bar, and dedicated menus for dogs, is helmed by Celebrity Chef Steven Starr, and the bar menu sports creative cocktails. Two rooftop pools provide space to either party or relax, plus spa treatments are available. A hefty resort fee covers beach chairs and umbrellas, Wi-Fi, the gym, and two four-hour bike rentals. Rooms are chic, but not all have balconies, and many have a glass shower open to the bedroom, creating privacy issues for some. For a less bustling and pricy option, consider the historic and modern B Ocean Resort Fort Lauderdale .

Oyster Hotel Review

Hip hotel that falls in-line with the w brand's work hard, play hard vibe.

The W Fort Lauderdale fits in with the brand's hip, modern, and artful collection of hotels. Guests tend to be young professionals and it's common to see almost everyone hanging in the public spaces playing with their phones. The property is split between two connected towers and rooms are divvied up between resident units and hotel rooms. Originally built in 2009, the property underwent a full multimillion-dollar renovation in 2017, giving all spaces a chic, stylish design inspired by the adjacent ocean. This property is large, taking up one full city block, and the building’s architecture curves to mimic a moving wave. The interior design also nods to the nautical with hombre curtains, pulley system lighting in the lobby (a.k.a Living Room), and an authentic rope brought over by a barge. All of the main hotel features and rooms are located on the fourth and fifth floors of the East Tower, which is closest to the beach. For check-in, you’ll have to head to the fourth floor. There are two pools, and WET East is the more lively of the two, with DJs and a party atmosphere on weekends.

Across from the beach and next to many hotels

W Fort Lauderdale is located along A1A Highway/North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard (though the entrance is off Bayshore Drive), among several other big beach hotels. This tourist strip is directly across from Fort Lauderdale Beach, and an easy walk to many restaurants, bars, and shops. The hotel's position along the Intracoastal Waterway also makes for beautiful views from the rooms. The action of Las Olas Boulevard is less than a 10-minute walk away, and downtown Fort Lauderdale can be reached in about six minutes by car. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is only 15 minutes away, while Miami International Airport is a 35-minute drive.

Chic, beachy rooms and suites with modern amenities; most with balconies

The W Fort Lauderdale has 517 rooms and suites spread out across two 27-floor towers. Renovated in 2017, rooms have a stylish, ocean-inspired look with distressed wood accents, wave-patterned blue-and-white carpeting, white linens and walls, and marble bathrooms. Highlights include the W’s stellar minibars featuring alcohol, treats, and various kits, 24-hour room service, bathrobes, and Nespresso machines with free pods. Bathrooms are spacious and feel hip with a six-piece collection of Bliss bath products, modern showerheads, and frosted glass, however the open-plan glass showers in many may cause privacy issues for those not on a romantic getaway. Bluetooth speakers, ironing facilities, and rose-gold mini-fridges keep things current and convenient, and most rooms have furnished balconies.

Wonderful Rooms start things off with 50-inch flat-screen TVs, bedside electrical outlets and USB ports, comfy W-brand beds, and shower/tub combos. Upgrades to Spectacular Rooms guarantee balconies, and Fabulous Oceanfront Rooms have large, furnished terraces with direct ocean views. All of these rooms can sleep up to four, while further upgrades have occupancy limits of just two people. Sitting areas are available in the Cool Corner Oceanfront Rooms and above, while suites have separate living and bedroom areas (and often more than one balcony).

All-Inclusive / Food

Food program designed by a well-known chef.

While it’s not specifically a foodie hotel, W Fort Lauderdale has a promising partnership with James Beard Award-winning chef Steven Starr. All hotel dining -including an in-room menu for dogs -- has been devised by Starr. Upon entering the hotel, guests are greeted with a coffee cafe that shares space with  El Vez restaurant. In addition to a decorative wall made of empty beer cans, guests can expect tasty Mexican dishes on the menu, indoor and outdoor seating, and over 100 types of tequila. Other food options include steak and seafood plates at Steak 954, a sushi bar with fish flown in from Japan, and casual eats off menus at both the Living Room bar and pool bar.

Impressive amount of features, including nightly events, two pools, and pet perks

If the W prides itself on anything, it’s having its pulse on the hip and slightly eccentric. W Fort Lauderdale flexes these muscles through nightly events in the lobby space, which is called the Living Room. From Bollywood nights to live art studios and top DJs, guests don’t have to go far to find interesting entertainment. During the day, this space is relaxed, with business meetings on lounge couches and drinks out on the terrace. Thanks to the W brand’s cocktail culture, drink specials are available every night.

Just across the road from the property is Fort Lauderdale's beach. This beach is public, which means no alcohol or food service on the beach, though guests have a dedicated area set up with free beach chairs and umbrellas. The fifth-floor Wet Deck is home to two pools, one on each tower. The West Pool on the resident’s side is calmer, and features Intracoastal views, a whirlpool, and padded loungers on top of Astroturf. The East Pool has a cooler scene, peek-a-boo cutouts that expose swimmers to the Living Room, and vinyl padded loungers, plus DJs at times and a party vibe on weekends. Curtained daybeds and cabanas are available for an extra fee. Both pools have food and drink service.

Bliss spa offers a variety of treatments. A 24-hour gym, dubbed FIT, is loaded with Technogym equipment. Water and fresh fruit are self-serve, and personal trainers are available for a charge. Over 40,000 square feet of event space is hiding inside the hotel, with both indoor and outdoor options, catering menus by Steven Starr, and a la carte costs for audiovisual equipment. The W Fort Lauderdale also has a well-connected concierge service called W Insiders who help hook guests up with hard-to-book restaurants, tickets, and exclusive clubs.

Like most hotels in the area, guests are charged a hefty daily resort fee that covers two beach chairs and an umbrella down, bike rentals, daily yoga or boot camp classes, water bottles for the beach, Wi-Fi, and coupons for signature cocktails. Dogs are welcome at the hotel for a daily fee and pricey cleaning fee. Even dogs have special perks here, like their own room service menu, bowls, treats, beds, bark boxes, bandanas, and balcony tinkle turf pads.

#TravelTuesday: W Fort Lauderdale for the Win

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

Balance is the answer to a successful life and now is a great time to set a goal for balance in the new year. On a trip to south Florida’s Fort Lauderdale Beach you can practice this balance with activities that allow you to #DetoxRetoxRepeat. On a four-day vacation to what is affectionately known as “The Venice of America,” you can start practicing good habits that will eventually be a win in living a balanced life.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

Your home base is the chic and glamorous W Fort Lauderdale , located directly on the beach with all the amenities you can ask for. With a bold personality it has been voted a top hotel in Florida by Conde Nast readers, where every guest room has a balcony, waterfront view and terry cloth robes. This adventure in equilibrium will allow you to choose from many activities and restaurants for a balanced experience. Even in the coldest month of January the average temp in Fort Lauderdale Beach is 69 degrees, making the winter months some of the best times to visit.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

#Detox at the W Fort Lauderdale

Sweat the impurities out at a Sea Sycle class on the hotel balcony overlooking the surf, where you will hear healing mantras from the instructor that encourage you to pedal at your own pace. These classes hold a limited number of bikes for use at no cost by hotel guests, so make your reservations as soon as you arrive.  Bikes are outside and spaced apart for an open-air adventure.

The hotel provides access to beach cruisers located right outside the lobby. Two hours of riding each day are included in the resort fee, which allows plenty of time to pedal one mile down the bike path on A1A to the Hugh Taylor Birch State Park . This park is an urban oasis nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway where cyclists will see natural habitat for south Florida and may encounter a state protected gopher tortoise. The park loop is two miles, so take a break to sit on a bench and watch mega yachts travel down the Intracoastal Waterway.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

Detoxification opportunities abound at the Away Spa . The Italian Comfort Zone products are luxurious with scents that will take you away. After your detox massage or facial, spend some time in the steam shower or go back to your room allowing your body time to soak in all the exquisite lotions and oils used during the treatment.

Participate in a high energy pure barre class offered by Pure Barre Fort Lauderdale on the Living Room balcony. Neon lights and bass pumping music will get you excited about exercising and is open to hotel guests and the public on a quarterly basis. If you can’t keep up with the instructors, no worries!  You do you.

Two pool areas are available to meet your mood. Wet East is where you go to see and be seen. This pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean always has tunes playing, features a full bar and a see-through wall for fun Insta photos. If you aren’t feeling jiggy, Wet West is secluded with an infinity hot tub and is the place for quiet relaxation.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

#Retox at the W Fort Lauderdale

All the detoxification means you can retox guilt free!  El Vez is an on-site restaurant that showcases classic Mexican fare with an emphasis on Baja-style cooking that celebrates the fresh seafood of the region. Open all day you can eat in or take out. When the weather is nice, which it usually is, outdoor dining is an option.

Meat and seafood lovers will find plenty of indulgence on the Steak 954 menu. Order the Sanuki Ribeye . It promises to be the most delicious cut of beef that you have ever tasted! Of course, it will spoil you for any future steak you try but it truly is a delicacy that should not be missed. If you aren’t a meat lover, other equally mouthwatering choices are locally-caught fish, decadent side dishes and a global selection of fine wines and spirits. When making reservations, ask to be seated by their famous jelly fish wall that could mesmerize you for hours.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

Off-site Options

While there is no reason you need to leave the hotel, most travelers do want to get out and see some of the sights. Renting a charter boat to cruise along the Intracoastal Waterway that makes Fort Lauderdale the “Venice of the South,” will give you a closeup look at the mega yachts and beautiful real estate of your dreams.

Visit the funky Rhythm and Vine for pre-dinner drinks where you can enjoy a Plaid Pants cocktail while sitting on a vintage couch under a mirror that asks, “Are you alive or just existing?” Bring a sticker from home to put on the Airstream trailer which houses the bar.  No need to ask, just do it, and leave a little bit of yourself in south Florida. Follow this up with dinner at Luigi’s Tuscan Grill on Las Olas.

w fort lauderdale travel weekly

Sobe Vegan is on the hotel property and is the place to experience how eating vegan can be a tool in the toolbox for healthier living. It will redefine what you’ve always thought “vegan” means. Organic juice, such as the watermelon sunrise juice, is the perfect way to start the day or to re-energize mid-day. Best meal options:  Acai Bowl and any of the burgers (you really will not miss the beef).

10 Charming Small Towns In New York's Catskills

10 underrated small beach towns in florida to kick the winter blues, 10 additional scenic stops to make if you're visiting the grand canyon, quick links, activities based-amenities at the w fort lauderdale, luxurious on-property experiences at the w fort lauderdale, the best bites of fort lauderdale.

South Florida, and Fort Lauderdale specifically, is synonymous with gorgeous beach vacations (read about some of the best beaches in the area here ) with a touch of luxurious experiences. Much like the city it's located in, W Fort Lauderdale is a prime seaside resort with amazing luxury amenities that elevate a traveler's stay.

While the rooms themselves are spacious and comfortable with increasingly luxurious fixtures as one goes up in price point--the Extreme Wow Suite (the top floor penthouse) can even be booked out for themed packages like a "Marry Me" proposal package or a girls' night out "Written In the Stars" astrology party-- the true standouts of this Marriott property are the additional amenities that the hotel offers. When we were recently invited to experience these amenities for ourselves, we were curious (and pleased) to test these products!

Related: 10 Kid-Friendly Fort Lauderdale Hotels That Are The Best The 'Venice of America' Has To Offer

Staying at W Fort Lauderdale isn't just the average rest-and-relax resort experience of any beachside hotel--it has so much to offer its guests that there's no way they'll get bored! While relaxing is always an option, of course (and we'll get to that later, too!), the standout of our stay was the activity-based amenities available through the property.

Cruise The Canals In A Private Boat

Fort Lauderdale is known by the unmistakable nickname "The Venice of America," and what better way to indulge in a bit of luxurious sightseeing than renting a boat and cruising the canals in style? The company Boat Setter can help facilitate a rental, but better yet, the W's concierge also referred to as the hotel's "Insider," can arrange for this rental on behalf of guests.

This is truly an excellent way to spend time, and on the voyage, guests will get a chance to see many iconic Fort Lauderdale sights, like those along the Riverwalk , and of course, the massive mansions that line the city's coastlines. Alight at the Riverwalk to experience its culture , or head to the sandbar and hang out with some seltzers in hand!

Bicycle Rentals And Morning Work Out Classes Are All-Inclusive!

Need to get from Point A to Point B but don't want to bother with a car? Or prefer to cruise on two wheels instead of on water? Then try out this exclusive amenity! Guests are able to check out beach cruisers for blocks of time to go and explore Fort Lauderdale by bike. While there are time limitations to how long a guest can have the bike at a time, the number of check-outs in a day is not capped, and thus it's a great option to go cruising throughout the day.

Looking for an activity that's even more active? Then try out the hotel's "Beach Bootcamp" or "Sunrise Yoga" Class --check with the hotel's Insiders and staff to confirm which class is being held on which day, but these are both great options to get the blood pumping while on holiday. And once again, these are included in the resort fee!

The W's in-house brand of spa experiences does not disappoint when it comes to luxurious pampering. From massages to facials to manicures and pedicures, the AWAY Spa has an enticingly extensive menu for guests to choose from.

One of the spa's more recent additions to that menu includes hairstyling and blowouts. While haircuts and other salon services have been a part of AWAY Spa, these new services really are the cherry on top of an already complete spa experience. At $75 for beachy wave styling, it is one of the best offerings for guests who are hoping to get glam before hitting the town!

Get Glam With The Luxury Cart

W Fort Lauderdale's ingenious recent offering is as unique as it is luxurious. The Luxury Cart is literally a cart of rentable luxury items--guests can ring down to the front desk for the cart and choose from an array of luxury accessories, perfumes, and handbags. With brands like Christian Dior, Versace, Gucci, and Tom Ford, the Luxury Cart will definitely elevate guests' pool lounging or going out 'fits. It's also a great way for guests to test drive a product they've been eyeing for purchase later on down the road! Just be sure to return the hotel's item because then guests will be purchasing it for sure!

Luxurious Pool Experiences At WET And Exclusive Beach Access

What's better than one pool? How about two pools and a beach?! W Fort Lauderdale boasts 2 different pools, WET East and WET West, accessible based on which section of the hotel guests book. Both pools are warmed to the perfect temperature (not that the Florida weather necessitates it, it's purely for comfort), have towels at the ready, and have ample space for guests to lounge. There are also spacious cabanas available for rent at an additional fee which just adds another layer of luxury. And, of course, the views of Fort Lauderdale Beach from these pools are stunning.

If guests prefer a beach day, then they can stroll across the street to the hotel's exclusive stretch of seaside heaven. Access to the beach and umbrella rentals are included in guests' resort fees as well, so laying out in the sand is really a hassle-free experience.

While there are plenty of iconic Fort Lauderdale eats and a plethora of experiences around the city , W Fort Lauderdale has two premier on-property restaurants that'll make guests feel like there is really no reason to leave the hotel! Both restaurants--Steak 954 and El Vez--are the brainchildren of James Beard Award Winning restaurateur Stephen Starr, and offer culinary selections that are sure to satisfy even the most discerning palettes.

Steak 954 Is A Cannot Miss for Surf & Turf Lovers

Known for its steak and seafood selections, Steak 954 has just about the best surf and turf foods in the area. Guests will not only be impressed by the food's high-quality ingredients and even higher-quality flavor, but their extensive wine menu, colorful cocktails, and high caliber of service will absolutely wow diners.

For a truly decadent experience, order the indulgent Seafood Platter or the melt-in-the-mouth Wagyu, and while guests enjoy their delicious food and cocktails, they can also take in the massive wall tank of jellyfish--think of it as dinner and a show!

Come To El Vez For The Food, Stay For The Atmosphere

El Vez , while more casual than Steak 954, also delivers when it comes to foody delights. An upscale interpretation of Mexican cuisine, the dishes at El Vez are familiar but with surprise South Floridian twists that'll keep diners delightfully surprised.

This restaurant also mixes a mean cocktail, especially its signature mojitos and flavorful frozen margaritas. The food and drink aren't the only things that pack a punch--the atmosphere of the restaurant is infectiously fun. Everything from the wall-of-beer-can art decor to the artisanal basket lights overhead, it's clear that this location of El Vez continues its sister properties' mission of good food and good times.

W Fort Lauderdale is an amenities-filled oasis along Fort Lauderdale beach that packages resort perks with touches of luxury. If looking for a hotel that has all the amenities, bells, and whistles, then travelers have to look no further than this hotspot of activity in South Florida.

Where To Stay In Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale Beach, as well as the rest of the Greater Fort Lauderdale area, is packed with hostels , hotels, Airbnb options, and vacation rentals, and it could be overwhelming when trying to narrow in on a spot.

But without a doubt, these options below stand out among the crowd for their convenience, unique amenities, and restaurant options.

The W Fort Lauderdale: A Touch of Luxury

The W Fort Lauderdale , located right on Fort Lauderdale Beach, offers a great blend of approachable fun and luxurious amenities unique to the property . Room rates vary depending on the season and configuration of the room, however, their rooms with balconies really are a can't-miss.

If you are hoping to really elevate the experience, then the W Fort Lauderdale's WOW and E-WOW (short for "extra-wow") are available for rental as both hotel rooms and/or event spots. This property's pool area is one of the most exceptional in the city and their onsite dining offerings at El Vez and Steak 954 make it easy (and delicious) to stay on the property.

  • Price : $$-$$$$ ($300-$600 per night during high season for an ocean-facing balcony room)
  • Location Highlights : Exclusive Beach Access; Fitness Classes on the Beach; Rentable bicycles included in resort fee

Sonesta, Fort Lauderdale

Further up along Fort Lauderdale Beach, the Sonesta Hotel, Fort Lauderdale is a fantastic place to stay if location is high up on a traveler's list of needs when visiting a new city. It's extremely close to the Galleria Shopping Center, Las Olas (the historic district of the town), and across the street from the beachfront.

The most unique thing about this hotel though? Every room has an ocean view. Uniquely designed so that all rooms face toward the ocean, it's hard to go wrong with this property.

With a Caribbean-themed on-site restaurant, Steelpan, as well as extensive meeting room space on the hotel's penthouse floor, it's an ideal place to congregate for vacationers and convention-ers alike.

  • Price : $$-$$$ ($160-$300 for Deluxe King Size Rooms depending on season)
  • Location Highlights : Every room has an ocean view; a secret speakeasy on property in one of the suites!; gourmet catering for events

How To Get Around For Lauderdale

48 hours will go by in a flash when staying in vibrant Fort Lauderdale, so waste no time on transit when in the city! Here are some of the best options to get around town.

Ride Circuit: Fast, Friendly, and Free!

One of the best (and under-the-radar) offerings the city has transport-wise for visitors is Ride Circuit, a ride app that promotes both accessibility and sustainability. Much like calling an Uber or Lyft, Circuit is a downloadable phone app where visitors can request private rides in all-electric vehicles, from road-safe golf cart trolleys to large sprinter vans.

The best part? It's free for riders! Yes, free . Tips are encouraged for drivers , but considering it's possible to get from one part of Fort Lauderdale to the other for the price of a driver's tip, it is truly one of the most affordable ways to get around the city (and Fort Lauderdale's best kept secret!)

The Brightline: Florida's Brightest Way To Travel

North America's best and brightest new train line venture is nothing short of a spectacular way of traveling around the state. The Brightline is a high-speed rail system that connects downtown Miami, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and now Orlando with a newly opened station.

With a superb station experience and a comfortable onboard experience (especially in Premium Class), this is the most efficient way to get from Southern Florida to Central Florida without the hassle of driving.

Water Taxi: For The Best Commute and A Great Tour By Sea

The Jungle Queen is hands-down a Fort Lauderdale classic when it comes to cruising the canals and seeing the Riverwalk, however, if searching for an authentically Fort Lauderdale experience, the Water Taxi is a great alternative as both transport and mini-tour.

With stops peppered along the Riverwalk, as well as connections to nearby Hollywood, this mode of transport is ideal if popping around waterfront destinations for the day. Cruise by the town's largest mega-yachts and docks, as well as millionaires (or now billionaires row) all from the comfort of the water taxi.

Riders can customize passes with either an all-day pass, an evening pass, or a multi-day pass to best suit their riding needs.

Day 1 In Fort Lauderdale: History Happy Hours

For a riveting first day at Fort Lauderdale, embrace the city's rich history with activities geared toward that friend or family member who loves to learn about the "how" and "why"!

Morning Activities

Kick off Day 1 right with a tasty breakfast at El Vez at the W Fort Lauderdale. With an extensive menu incorporating flavors from Mexico into traditional American and Canadian breakfast offerings, El Vez is a great option for a hardier first meal of the day.

While dine-in and takeaway offerings are available in the mornings, El Vez also has a well-stocked pre-made, grab-n-go counter for those wanting to start their day early.

From breakfast, visitors should head to Segway Fort Lauderdale , for one of the most unique tour experiences Florida has to offer. Zipping through the city on two-wheeled segways, it's truly a fun vantage point for even the most seasoned traveler.

Equal parts history lesson and site-seeing adventure, visitors can mix and match the kind of things they want to see and hear on the tour for a customizable experience.

  • Segway Tour Cost: $39 per person for the traditional sightseeing tour (increases in $10 increments for add-ons); includes time for training for segway newbies!

Afternoon Activities

Segue from the segway to a well-deserved lunch in the Las Olas area of Fort Lauderdale. Home to an eclectic blend of restaurants, shopping boutiques, and historic buildings, Las Olas is a vibrantly colorful area to visit.

Head to Louie Bossi for an incredible Italian lunch with cocktails. Louie Bossi is a scratch kitchen, so everything is made in-house; expect some great fresh pasta and protein dishes here!

After lunch, walk it off by taking a stroll down Las Olas to head to The Str anahan House , Fort Lauderdale's oldest surviving home, and the crown jewel of the town's historical buildings.

As it tells the story of two of the town's founders, Ivy and Frank Stranahan, this historic house seeks to connect modern Fort Lauderdale with its roots while also serving as a center of community activity.

Visitors will be sure to fall in love with the house and its history during their tour, as well as with its enthusiastic staff who care-take the buildings beautifully.

  • Stranahan House Admission Prices: $12 per adult, Seniors (60+): $11, Students with ID: $7

Evening Activities

Round out the history-full day with an evening spent at The House On The River , the newest restaurant rendition in the historic Bryan House. This spot is a delight for all the senses, the gastronomical, the visual, and the paranormal!

Offering a menu of high-end European-inspired dishes, cocktails, and wines, every dish is an exquisite display of the culinary scene at large in Fort Lauderdale. Lucky visitors may also hear some fantastic ghost stories about the building from the staff, but don't let that deter you from a beautiful meal in an even more beautiful setting.

Luckier visitors will have the pleasure of being served by Frank, a charismatic and enthusiastic member of staff whose knowledge of both the food and the ghosts/history is a combo one can't beat!

To experience House On The River for a smaller price tag, try out their Happy Hours offerings! Tuesdays-Fridays from 4pm-6pm, the restaurant offers House Lite Bites and discount cocktails, wine, and beers. It's worth the visit!

Day 2 In Fort Lauderdale: Sea And Sip (And Eat)

Ready to hit the water on Day 2? The perfect itinerary on this day is made up of sips/eats and the sea, all of which Fort Lauderdale excels in.

Start the day off with a decadent breakfast from Milk Money Bar , the perfect place to fuel up for adventures by the sea.

The restaurant recently introduced French Toast to its menu, and while it sounds simple, it is a delicious stack of the most indulgent sweet breakfast treats. Don't miss out!

A quick 10-minute drive away is Sistrunk Marketplace & Brewery , a standout food hall/art gallery/DJ school (yes, DJ school ), bar, and kitchen.

Work off the French Toast breakfast from Milk Money Bar with a distillery tour to learn about Sistrunk's in-house, locally-made spirits , 12 Mile Rum and Shady Vodka (there are hilarious backstories to these names so don't be shy about asking!).

After the tour, head straight to the bar to order a cocktail mixed with either spirit—it won't disappoint!

After those cocktails, it's likely visitors will not want to venture far for lunch, but as luck would have it, Sistrunk's food hall is packed with both local and national crowd favorites.

From Korean Bibimbap bowls to authentic Italian food made from scratch to street tacos served from a taco truck inside the food hall, it's an ideal place to grab a bite (or many) after a distillery tour.

Ready to get on the high seas! Or at least Fort Lauderdale's canals to scope out mega-yachts and mcmansions? Hop on the aforementioned Water Taxi to zip around the waterways ! Water Taxi also takes private charters , which is a fantastic way to get a specially crafted tour to suit everyone's travel needs and themes.

Staff will take good care of private charter patrons to ensure they're having a good time! Take the Water Taxi to Hollywood to take a dip at Hollywood Beach , the area's popular and beautiful coastal destination.

Finish off a sea-themed Day 2 and 48 hours in Fort Lauderdale with dinner at Olive & Sea , a Mediterranean-themed spot with extremely tasty and fresh seafood options. The Hilton Hotel's newest restaurant endeavor in town, Olive & Sea is a rooftop bar and restaurant that's situated right alongside the Intercoastal Waterway.

The views and atmosphere are incredible (especially at sunset), and its delightful food matches the coastal, sea-theme. This fledging, soon-to-be hot spot will be packed soon, so be sure to snag a reservation!

Fort Lauderdale is a must-visit destination during a traveler's time in Florida, and this itinerary—rain or shine, winter or summer—is the perfect way to see all the best and most unique of the town as hassle-free as possible! Travelers won't regret paying a visit to this coastal Florida destination!

Red Lobster is in bankruptcy but still has dozens of open Florida restaurants. Here’s where

Desperate for a Cheddar Bay Biscuit fix? Although nearly 100 Red Lobster restaurants in 28 states were abruptly shut down last month — including  at least 17 in Florida — and 135 may still be in jeopardy , there are still lots of locations for the popular seafood chain out there.

Red Lobster, which started in Lakeland, Florida  and grew to be the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, said it has more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand,  CNN reported . It plans to sell the business to its lenders for financing to keep going.

While some blamed the chain's popular "endless shrimp promotion" for bringing the company down, experts pointed to  inflationary prices, lease obligations above market rates, and operational decisions .

But the closed locations represent just about 15% of the 641 restaurants that were open in the beginning of the year, and USA TODAY pulled together every Red Lobster location and checked to see which ones were still open.

Here's where to go in Florida.

Where Red Lobsters are closed or open across the U.S.

Which Red Lobster restaurants are still open in Florida?

While the  company shuttered the most locations in Florida , the state is still home to 42 restaurants that are still operating, including three in Orlando. Texas tops Florida with three more locations – even though 10 have been recently closed.
