The Best Countries to Visit (Our 20 Favorite Countries Ranked)

By Eric Stoen on May 13, 2020 • Last Updated May 23, 2024 This post may contain affiliate links. Read my Disclosure here .

Rating Every Country We’ve Traveled To

During the COVID-19 shutdown we were at home and looking for ways to stay entertained, so I asked my wife and kids to rate every country they’ve been to from 1 to 10. I added in my votes and ranked every country that had at least two votes. The goal: come up with a list of the best countries to visit, at least from our experience.

Everyone could vote based on any criteria. In general the ratings were consistent from person to person, but there were some definite outliers – places where one person remembered things differently than the others. In a family of five, you can’t always keep everyone happy. We had some fun discussions when people disagreed!

Our Top 20 Countries (the 20 Best Countries to Visit)

In order to give you family travel ideas, here are our top 20 countries to travel to. Keep in mind that at the time we created this list our girls were 10 and 14 and our son was 12, and they had been to 62 countries. We split our travels between cities and nature and add in frequent cultural activities and cooking classes. We don’t go to a lot of museums or concentrate on history. Likewise we don’t spend full days at the beach or shopping.

Five continents are represented in our top 20. Australia came in at number 21, and our top African country is the Seychelles at 29.

Note that I’m including the average score after every destination.

20. The Netherlands (7.3)

Favorite countries - Netherlands - Keukenhof Gardens outside Amsterdam

Favorite Places: Amsterdam, the Keukenhof Gardens and the tulip fields throughout the country in the spring.

Relevant Blog Posts: None. Amsterdam is usually a 1-2 day layover for us. We love the city but I’ve never written about it.

19. Chile (7.4)

Patagonia with kids - Hiking in Torres del Paine National Park

Favorite Places: Patagonia, the Atacama Desert and Easter Island. Santiago is fun for a day or two as well.

Relevant Blog Posts: Spring Break in Patagonia | Chile’s Atacama Desert with Kids | Easter Island with a 6-Year-Old

15 (tie). Antarctica (7.5)

Antarctica with Kids: Kayaking in Antarctica

Favorite Places: Antarctica isn’t, strictly speaking, a country, but it’s an amazing place to visit with or without kids. We’ve taken our kids at 8 and 12 and loved everything about it.

Relevant Blog Posts: Antarctica with an 8-Year-Old ; Adventures By Disney Antarctica: A Magical Expedition ; An Antarctica Packing List

15 (tie). Indonesia (7.5)

Bali with Kids - Swinging!

Favorite Places: Indonesia is mainly about Bali for us, since my daughters love the island, but Borobudur is amazing as well. We want to keep exploring.

Relevant Blog Posts: Bali with Kids | How to Visit Borobudur

15 (tie). Norway (7.5)

Disney port excursions - Running around Bergen (literally)

Favorite Places: We love Oslo and Bergen, especially in the summer, and the Norway in a Nutshell tour is a great way to travel between them. The fjords are gorgeous as well, and Tromsø in the arctic circle is a good way to experience the midnight sun.

Relevant Blog Post: Oslo with Kids . Most of my Norwegian travels were pre-kids and I haven’t written about them.

15 (tie). Sweden (7.5)

Sweden with kids - Loved the reflections

Favorite Places: Stockholm and Gothenburg are both great cities to explore for a few days, but we love the coastal towns and the forests of Central Sweden.

14. Turkey (7.6)

Best counties to visit - Turkey - Overlooking Cappadocia

Favorite Places: Istanbul and Cappadocia. And we loved our day on a gulet near Bodrum.

Relevant Blog Posts: Istanbul with Kids | An Amazing Trip to Cappadocia with Kids | Bodrum with Kids

13. Switzerland (7.7)

Lake Lugano at sunrise

Favorite Places: My wife and I have traveled all over Switzerland pre-marriage and loved all of the small towns – places like Interlaken, Crans-Montana and Luzern – and I recently hiked and biked from Engelberg to Interlaken. With the kids we’ve only explored Zurich on layovers and Lake Lugano on a day trip from Como. Definitely one of the best countries to visit – we just need to plan more Swiss trips with the kids.

Relevant Blog Post: Hiking in Switzerland: Engelberg to Interlaken

12. The Maldives (7.8)

Six Senses Laamu

Favorite Places: Six Senses Laamu in the Laamu Atoll.

Favorite Places: Vancouver, Banff and Winnipeg and the surrounding areas. Victoria on Vancouver Island is fun as well.

Relevant Blog Post: Manitoba, Canada with Kids . All of our other Canada trips were before I started writing about our travels.

10. Croatia (8.0)

Favorite Places: Zagreb and Plitvice National Park. We still need to get to Krka National Park and Dubrovnik.

Relevant Blog Posts: Croatia With Kids: Zagreb and Plitvice Lakes

9. Brazil (8.3)

Favorite Places: The Amazon Rainforest and the Rio Negro. Manaus is worth a day or two as well. We haven’t been to Rio yet.

Relevant Blog Posts: The Amazon Rainforest with Kids: A Magical (Unplugged) Expedition

7 (tie). Laos (8.5)

Best countries to visit - Laos - At the top of Phousi Mountain in Luang Prabang, Laos

6. Portugal (8.7)

Best countries to visit - Portugal - Cascais

Favorite Places: Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra. Still haven’t visited Porto or the Douro Valley.

Relevant Blog Posts: None. Definitely one of the best countries to travel to, but our trips have largely been focused around weddings.

5. New Zealand (8.8)

Favorite countries - Driving around New Zealand's South Island

Favorite Places: The South Island. We’ve explored it far more than the North Island, even though we’ve visited Auckland several times.

Relevant Blog Posts: None. We need to go back and see more, and I’ll write about it next time!

3 (tie). Faroe Islands (9.0)

Faroe Islands - Oda making sure my son didn't plummet to his death

The Best Countries to Visit: Your Turn

What are the best countries to visit from your family’s experience? Do you agree/disagree with our ranking? Would love to hear your thoughts on the best countries to travel to in the comments below.

And I should note that a lot of people are finding this post when Googling “coolest countries to visit”. So I did a separate post on the coolest countries .

Travel Insurance and Credit Cards

We never used to travel with travel health coverage, or even trip cancellation insurance, but we regretted that when my wife broke her knee traveling recently. I write about it here . I highly recommend purchasing insurance – either on an annual basis if you travel a lot, or for individual trips. We went with G1G based on price and what they offer.

And if you don’t have a credit card that earns you miles/points with every purchase, get one! We’ve traveled to a lot of the countries above for free by redeeming miles for tickets. My favorite cards right now are HERE . I highly recommend getting one without foreign transaction fees .

Where to Travel with Your Kids at Every Age

May 14, 2020 at 11:13 am

This is such an inspiring list! I can’t wait to do some rankings with the kids. Our plans to spend a month in Greece this summer (inspired by your article on Naxos) have been derailed, but seeing it as number one on your list validates our decision to reschedule it as our long trip next summer.

' src=

May 14, 2020 at 11:16 am

Our June Naxos plans fell through, but we’re still optimistic about August – if they’ll let Americans in and if the airlines are flying, we’ll be there.

' src=

May 16, 2020 at 12:01 am

You have been to some amazing places. Interesting that Europe has scored so highly with all the family.

May 18, 2020 at 8:00 am

We’ve traveled to Europe the most, so maybe there’s a sense of familiarity and comfort, especially for the kids? If I was doing my own ranking there are a lot of non-European countries that would be in the top 20, including Ecuador, India and Tanzania.

' src=

November 15, 2020 at 9:06 am

Ecuador is the only country my kids have traveled to and we loved it!

May 17, 2020 at 5:38 pm

No. 1. Jordan. We all had a magnificent time there. Small Country so easy to see everything but every day was something different and a different period of history.

2. Grand Cayman. 7 mile beach is just gorgeous. Easy to get to and clean and friendly.

We had a disaster of a trip to Italy but I’d go back to Venice in a heartbeat.

May 18, 2020 at 7:57 am

I’ve only spent one day in Jordan, in Petra, but it’s at the top of my list to return to.

We haven’t been to Grand Cayman, simply because the Caribbean can be a hassle to reach from California. It’s easier to get to Fiji than Grand Cayman. But I’ll add it to our list!

' src=

May 22, 2020 at 2:37 pm

Great list, and so many places I need to visit! I’ll add the Czech Republic, in particular Prague, to the discussion. I love Prague for all of its magical architecture and the ability to walk everywhere. And, so many great little outdoor cafes either right in the center of town or along the canal.

May 22, 2020 at 2:40 pm

Thanks Megan! The Czech Republic actually finished towards the bottom of our list, but for the kids at least that was based solely on one August visit when Prague was very crowded. I think they would like it better if we were to return in the spring or fall. It’s an amazing city, just not fun with too many people. And I want to explore a lot more of the country as well.

I absolutely love reading your blogs and post. Thank you. Though my kids are older now, we did go ‘round the world’ with them, with partners and a grandson in 2018. Tokyo to Porto then a week on a small (36 passengers) boat from Dubrovnik to Split, on to BC in Canada then a relax in Santa Monica before home. Every place held something special and was so different to the next. I would say the highlight for us all was Canada- we stayed in a small town called Smithers and the the younger ones did extreme mountain bike riding, fishing, hiking, shooting at the gun range and drives to nearby First Nation sites. Unbelievable. I loved it so much I went back in 2019 and did 5 weeks Canada/Alaska which was out of this world.

May 25, 2020 at 1:04 pm

Thanks Joanne! Your trip sounds amazing – a lot of our favorite places. We still haven’t been to Porto though. And we would love to explore Canada more. I’ll add Smithers to our list.

Great places.

How wonderful for the children. We are slow budget family travellers and often find ourselves saying that we want our kids to have places to discover on their own. Travelling as a family is truly wonderful and we love it. Maybe it will be the highlight of our lives as parents. Yet, as they get older we find ourselves thinking more of solo or exchange trips for them alone that doesn’t include us plus trips for just the two of us that don’t include them. Like much of parenting it is a tough call…

Pretty amazed that Greece beat out Italy (and by a large margin) given your love of Florence. What happened to Spain?

June 20, 2020 at 2:59 pm

Spain is roughly halfway down our list. The kids have only been 3 times, and only for a day or two each time.

' src=

September 5, 2020 at 10:03 am

You have missed cape Town as other interesting place to visit.

September 6, 2020 at 7:30 pm

1) I love Cape Town. 2) Cape Town is not a country. 3) We have not taken our kids to South Africa so it was not included in our voting.

' src=

June 1, 2023 at 12:13 pm

So far, South Africa, Israel and Switzerland have been my favs. Israel is so impactful, obviously, for different reasons. Costa Rica is pretty nice. The U.S. is up there if you think in terms of Kawaii, Hawaii and parts of CA, OR, WA. Austria was great. England was was as well. France nice, but overall, I would put South Africa at the top of the list of all the places we have visited.

' src=

November 28, 2020 at 9:26 am

Pointers for Switzerland travel from US for perhaps one full week in the country? Note: We are rather healthy but in our late 60’s. Love your blog and robust sense of adventure and open minds regarding diverse cultures!

November 29, 2020 at 2:26 pm

Hi Scott. I asked my friend Kate in Zurich for suggestions, since she knows Switzerland far better than I do.

Her thoughts: For a week in Switzerland I would suggest taking the train as it’s so easy, safe, and convenient. Plus, you get to see the Swiss landscapes the whole time. Spend a day exploring old town Zürich, the next day take the train to Luzern and explore it overnight. The rest of the week take the train to Lauterbrunnen and spend a few days exploring the beautiful hiking and waterfalls, sleeping in either Wengen, Grindelwald, or Mürren. If there’s extra time, visit Rhinefalls and the cute historic town of Stein am Rhine.

Have you visited mexico? Was expecting mexico on the list…..I’ve never been there though

December 4, 2020 at 9:43 am

Mexico was halfway down our list. We love San Miguel de Allende, I’m a huge fan of Mexico City, and my wife has a lot of family history in Mexico. But we’ve spent too much time in touristy, less-interesting areas like Los Cabos, Playa del Carmen and Cancun. We need to explore more of real Mexico.

' src=

June 1, 2021 at 7:25 am

You should visit Oaxaca and Chiapas…..amazing places

June 1, 2021 at 7:58 am

Of course! On our list.

' src=

January 27, 2021 at 4:27 pm

I’ve enjoyed perusing your lists! Since the majority of us aren’t doing much travel these days, our travel group likes to reminisce about our past travel adventures. You’ve done a country list and city list. Next up, consider a favorite experience/activity while traveling. Here’s our top 10 experiences: 1) Safari in the Serengeti & Ngorogoro Crater 2) Antarctica cruise 3) Amazon River cruise and live aboard 4) Diving and snorkeling in Palawan, Philippines 5) Live aboard and diving on the Great Barrier Reef 6) Great White Shark cage diving in Cape Town 7) Visiting Skellig Michael Island in Ireland 8) Southern Alps plane tour in New Zealand 9) Ziplining in Costa Rica 10) Spending the night in a treehouse in Sri Lanka

I would love to hear what you and your family’s top experiences have been. Gives others great ideas for future travel too.

Aloha, Bonnie

January 27, 2021 at 4:55 pm

Thanks Bonnie! I did a post back in 2016 with our favorite activities ( https://travelbabbo.com/ten-cool-kid-friendly-activities/ ) but it could definitely be time to update that with more recent things. I was thinking about having the kids rate hotels too.

I have a soon to be 7yo & 2yo, we are trying to decide on where to go next year as a little family holiday and I am determined to take us somewhere that is more than just playing by the pool and beach. This list has given me more destinations to add to the TTT list. I am stuck between Croatia and Naxos in Greece to start off with as they both look amazing!

May 24, 2021 at 12:45 pm

Great! Both Croatia and Greece would make excellent destinations. Naxos will definitely have more beach/pool time, Croatia would be a little more culture and nature.

' src=

May 24, 2021 at 6:47 pm

My first thought is, will you adopt me. WOW your kids are lucky and I am sure so well educated. I was happy to see Portugal on your list. A kinda unknown, great value hidden treasure of Europe. And I gotta say, I love the southern coast of Spain. Your list was really fun to read and some never entered my mind and to be honest, one I have to look up as I have no idea where it is. I am excited to see what is coming from you and your family as being retired, it is time to get back to traveling. If you could note somewhere how the traveling would be for senior single female it would be great. Many years ago, I traveled to Isreal and Greece alone (not a senior back then), but I loved it.

May 25, 2021 at 9:40 am

Thanks Tracy! I’m glad you’re inspired! And I definitely need to explore southern Spain more.

I am unable to write about travel from a senior single female perspective as I am none of those, and I only blog from personal experience. There are so many good travel blogs though – if you search around you should be able to find someone who matches you and your travel style perfectly.

I vote for this location as NUMBER ONE ! ! Without a doubt ……

The Amalfi coast in Italy ! ! ! the most beautiful… people, hotels, food views, …… on and on ! ! !

' src=

June 16, 2021 at 8:44 am

Great list! Just a note, it’s Vancouver Island in Canada, not Victoria Island 🙂

June 16, 2021 at 10:37 am

Thank you so much! Change made!

July 23, 2021 at 9:36 am

Nice Post Eric! I am afraid to travel alone and you travel with kids. Hats off to you. Maybe some day I will also travel like you. Great Post Man.

Please visit India some day.

July 23, 2021 at 9:41 am

I have visited India many times, both with and without kids. One of my favorite countries!

' src=

February 7, 2022 at 8:44 am

Taiwan is definitely the best. I bet the only reason it’s not here is because they didn’t go. I recommend it!

February 7, 2022 at 9:13 am

We’ve been to Taiwan – you could have done a search for Taiwan on this website, or gone to my About Me page , to verify that. It finished roughly halfway down our rankings. Would love to return.

March 3, 2022 at 8:49 am

Love this list. Having traveled and lived abroad we are excited to return to travel overseas soon with our 9-year old daughter. Having lived in Estonia for four years, I highly recommend it. Very found memories of the people, land and sauna culture as well as the best intact historic city IMHO in Europe without the crowds. Even more memorable at Christmas time as the best uncrowded Christmas market we’ve been to. (birthplace of the Christmas tree as well as Riga, Latvia’s claim to fame). Thanks for your blog.

March 3, 2022 at 12:03 pm

I love Estonia! I’ve traveled around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania several times, but before the kids were born. Would love to take them.

' src=

August 21, 2022 at 10:29 pm

Great list. Italy, Greece, France, Spain and Turkey are my favorites in Europe. Jordan and Israel were also fascinating.

Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico and Ecuador in the Americas.

Botswana, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya in Africa.

Australia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Palau and Japan in Asia/Oceania.

Still high on bucket list: New Zealand, Morocco, Egypt, Portugal, Croatia and Peru. So many places. So little time.

“Sad that a beautiful country like INDIA is not in the list” . Especially when Taj Mahal is in seven wonders of world. Rajasthan mighty forts and rich culture. Gold beaches of Goa . Keralas back waters and greenery, Tibet and Kashmir mountains . Thousands of years old temples in Tamilnadu.

November 8, 2022 at 9:44 am

This is a very strange comment. Have you not looked through my website? Have you seen all of the India photos I’ve posted to Instagram? This specific post is based on family voting, and only one of my kids has been to India. But India, and Rajasthan in particular, is one of my favorite places in the world and I have said that many, many times.

Sample Answer 1:

Introduction:

One country that has long piqued my curiosity and desire for exploration is Japan. Known for its unique blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity, Japan offers a myriad of experiences that range from tranquil to exhilarating.

Japan's cultural richness is unparalleled. The country celebrates its history through well-preserved temples, castles, and traditional ceremonies. Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is home to over a thousand temples, including the famous Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Meanwhile, Tokyo, the current capital, exemplifies modernity with its towering skyscrapers, bustling streets, and advanced technology.

The natural scenery in Japan is just as captivating. From the iconic Mount Fuji to the serene Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, the country's landscapes are a testament to its geographical diversity. Seasonal changes further enhance these landscapes, with cherry blossom season in spring and vibrant koyo (autumn leaves) in fall attracting visitors worldwide.

Japanese cuisine, renowned for its emphasis on freshness and seasonality, is another aspect I look forward to experiencing. Sushi, sashimi, and ramen are just the tip of the iceberg. Each region boasts its local specialties, offering a culinary journey through the flavors of Japan.

Conclusion:

Visiting Japan would not only satisfy my wanderlust but also immerse me in a culture that balances respect for tradition with the embrace of innovation. It's a journey that promises both personal enrichment and unforgettable experiences.

Sample Answer 2:

Another country on my travel wish list is New Zealand. Famous for its stunning landscapes, adventure sports, and Maori culture, New Zealand is a destination that appeals to nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

The geographical diversity of New Zealand is astounding. The South Island is renowned for its majestic mountains, fjords, and glaciers, offering breathtaking views and outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and bungee jumping. The North Island, with its geothermal wonders, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cities like Auckland and Wellington, presents a contrast that underscores the country's natural beauty.

Maori culture is a significant part of New Zealand's identity. Engaging with this rich cultural heritage through traditional Maori performances, visiting marae (meeting grounds), and learning about the Maori way of life would provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the country's history and cultural diversity.

New Zealand's conservation efforts to preserve its unique flora and fauna are also commendable. National parks and protected areas offer opportunities to encounter wildlife such as kiwis, dolphins, and seals in their natural habitats, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts.

New Zealand promises an adventure of a lifetime, with its dramatic landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to environmental preservation. It's a country that not only offers a retreat into nature but also an adventure that challenges and inspires.

Follow-up Questions and Answers:

Q1. What do you think you would learn from visiting these countries?

A1. Visiting Japan and New Zealand would offer insights into how different cultures preserve their heritage while embracing change and innovation. It would also highlight the importance of environmental conservation and the value of living harmoniously with nature.

Q2. How do you think traveling to a new country can change a person?

A2. Traveling exposes individuals to new perspectives, challenges preconceptions, and fosters adaptability. It encourages empathy and understanding across cultures, potentially leading to personal growth and a more open-minded worldview.

Q3. What do you find most appealing about exploring new cultures?

A3. Exploring new cultures offers the chance to learn about different ways of life, traditions, and values. It's an opportunity to expand one's knowledge and appreciate the diversity that enriches our world.

Q4. How important is it to know the local language when visiting a new country?

A4. While knowing the local language can greatly enhance the travel experience by facilitating deeper interactions and understanding, it's not always essential. Many people find ways to communicate and connect through gestures, expressions, and basic phrases, highlighting the universal nature of human connection.

Q5. Would you prefer to visit historical sites or natural attractions in a new country? Why?

A5. This choice varies by individual preference. Visiting historical sites can provide a deep dive into a country's past and cultural identity, while natural attractions offer a chance to connect with the environment and enjoy the beauty of the natural world. Both experiences are enriching in their own ways and contribute to a fuller understanding of a destination.

One Day in Oslo Itinerary – How to Spend a Perfect Day in Oslo, Norway

Oslo is one of Europe’s fastest-growing cities – its population is approaching 700,000 and new neighborhoods with eye-catching architecture are popping up all the time. The largest city in Norway is quickly transforming into a cosmopolitan hub with an abundance of world-class museums, restaurants, and art but still maintains the relaxed atmosphere of a much smaller town. It is therefore a city that definitely should have a place on any traveler’s bucket list. Yes, one day in Oslo can be a real treat, so here’s how to make the most of the time you have here. Prepare for a beautiful day of sightseeing!

One day in Oslo Itinerary

GUEST POST BY KEVIN HODGON BLOG: Kevin’s Travel Diary

Oslo is nestled between the Oslo fjord and hundreds of square miles of forested hills and is a green city in more ways than one. The compact city center is easily explored on foot or by bike, and an efficient public transport system makes the whole city accessible without a car.

Norway’s capital since 1814, Oslo is home to the Norwegian government and the Royal Family.

The country’s largest cultural institutions, which include the Norwegian Opera & Ballet, the National Theatre and the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, present first-rate art exhibitions and opera, ballet and theater performances.

What’s the best time to visit Oslo?

The best time to visit Oslo is from May to August when the temperatures rise, but the room rates in the city remain surprisingly affordable. This is also the best time to experience some mild temperatures, which average in the mid-60s, but it can get chillier, so make sure to bring a jacket. Oslo’s spring and summer are the most popular travel periods, especially between May and July. July tends to see a dip in business travel, so leisure tourists might have a chance to save on traditionally expensive accommodations at this time.

Like Stockholm, Oslo can experience nearly 24 hours of daylight, with the famous Midnight Sun usually appearing in June or July. On the flip side, there are winter days of near-total darkness. This is matched with frigid weather and temperatures diving into the teens.

As for the events, you will want to keep an eye out for St . Hallvard’s Feast Day , Downtown Summer Festival , or Oslo Live Festival if you’re visiting from May to August. However, there is a lot to enjoy in the city during Christmas time too thanks to the Great Annual Christmas Fair .

One final tip – the quietest (and likely cheapest) month in Oslo is October. The summer is over, but the ski season hasn’t started yet. May and September are also good months to visit if you want to avoid crowds.

A few facts about Oslo

Oslo is the home of the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded in this city every year in December.

The city also has a strong connection with London seeing how the Christmas tree that is set up at Trafalgar Square every year comes from Oslo’s beautiful forests. In fact, this tradition goes back more than 75 years. The tree is carefully chosen and its moving from the forest is overseen by the British ambassador and Oslo’s mayor. Neat, huh?

Oslo was also Europe’s Green Capital in 2019, and environmentalism is very much alive and kicking around here. In fact, the city has the largest percentage of electric cars in the whole world – more than 50,000 of them roam the streets every day! Also, about one-half of the city’s waste gets recycled.

One more impressive fact – about two-thirds of the city’s population have a university degree.

One Day in Oslo Itinerary

Oslo is not a big city, so like always I recommend walking. You can walk almost anywhere, but for this itinerary, you will need a city transport card . I hope you’re ready, you’re going to need to get an early start as I’m going to take you around Oslo’s best attractions in one day. Start at 9 am at the latest and finish around 6 pm. Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do during your one day in Oslo.

Start your day at Akershus Fortress

Start things off at the Akershus Fortress . This is an amazing place to walk around on historical grounds, and from the top, you have stunning views of the harbor. During clear summer months, the sunset views are incredible from here, although the sunset is can come quite late, especially in summer.

Akershus Fortress

Stroll around the harbor

After you’ve explored the historical grounds, head down towards the harbor. On route, you will pass the City Hall on the right, so go and explore it. After that, you will see the harbor on the left, and if you continue forward you’ll see the dazzling white tiles of the famous Opera House straight ahead.

Oslo City Hall Interior

The Opera House offers great views over the Oslofjord, it’s free to walk inside the foyer and on the roof of the building, so do go and explore – it will be well worth it.

Oslo Opera House Harbour

Stop at Munch

Edvard Munch is probably the best-known Norwegian painter, and he left his collection to Oslo after his death. And the city is indeed taking very good care of it! Munch, the museum, is actually next to the Opera House, so you won’t have to go very far. And apart from the artist’s collection, this beautiful building has other contemporary pieces on display.

Munch’s most famous creation, The Scream, is also in this museum. Do keep in mind that there are several versions of the masterpiece, and Munch houses eight at the moment. At least one will always be displayed on the 4th floor.

Find a nice place for lunch

By now, you must be getting hungry, so head back down to the city center and go towards the harbor. There are plenty of great restaurants here serving all kinds of dishes.

Seaport Restaurant , for example, serves seafood, pizzas, but also some Turkish dishes, all very, very tasty. Den Glade Gris is a bit away from the harbor, but it serves excellent traditional Norwegian dishes and boasts a wonderfully comfortable atmosphere. Ruffino is a great Italian place, and Mehfel will satisfy anyone who is looking for some good Indian food.

Check out the Holmenkollen ski museum and ski jump

Next, with your back to the harbor, head forward and towards the nearest subway station. You will take a trip to see the Holmenkollen ski museum and ski jump , one of Oslo’s top attractions. Take metro 1 for about 15 minutes and get off at stop Holmenkollen (the view from the top of the subway station alone is worth the trip). From here, it takes around 10 minutes to walk uphill to the ski jump (follow the signs), so be prepared for the most stunning 360 – degree view –   it really is nothing short of breathtaking

Once you’re back in the harbor, jump onto tram 12 and get off at the entrance of Vigeland Park.

Visit Vigeland Park and its artwork

Vigeland Park is the world’s largest sculpture park made by a single artist and again one of Oslo’s most popular attractions. This unique park has more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite, and wrought iron. Take a little stroll around this park, but don’t miss the spectacular artwork in the middle.

Vigeland Park

For this next part, and for someone who doesn’t know the city, it’s easier if you catch the tram back to the harbor again. Then over to the bus station and catch bus 30 towards Bygdoy from Radhuset. Now we are heading towards the Folkemuseet.

Vigeland park Sculptures

The Norwegian Museum of Cultural History

The next stop on your Oslo itinerary is the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History . The Folk Museum is an open-air museum with around 150 traditional houses from all parts of Norway and a stave church from the year 1200.

The indoor museum shows traditional handicraft items, Sami culture, weapons, toys and folk costumes. Plenty of exciting things to see and experience, and learning about the Sami is very fascinating indeed. Do not miss out!

Spend an evening at the harbor promenade

Once you have finished exploring the museum, head back to the city centre for one last time today. To the side of the harbor is the harbor promenade where you will find plenty of restaurants and bars. Now, I don’t know about you but after this itinerary, I’m knackered and I deserve a nice cold beer, on an outside terrace overlooking the harbor! But a nice dinner sure wouldn’t go amiss, either.

Louise Restaurant & Bar is the perfect place for that, but I would recommend HIMKOK Storgata Destilleri if you’re in the mood for a cocktail – it’s the best cocktail place in town! Dr . Jekyll’s Pub also comes highly recommended, and if you don’t mind leaving this area, head to the Summit Bar for a drink with a spectacular view. In any case – enjoy!

Oslo View From The Opera House

Where to stay in Oslo?

Oslo, being the capital of Norway, offers a vast number of possibilities when it comes to accommodation. Of course, it offers not just luxury options, since you can literally find just about anything in accordance with your budget. There are plenty of hotels and hostels for any type of traveler, but here are a few of my favorites:

Grand Hotel Oslo

Hotel Bristol

Kristian IVs Gate 7, 0164 Oslo, Norway

When it comes to choosing a luxurious stay in Oslo, Hotel Bristol is the one to beat. Its lavish interior will leave you speechless, and the location is pretty much perfect. You can easily explore the city here, plus the hotel offers a great gym and sauna. Furthermore, Bristol Grill serves excellent Norwegian food, and the Library Bar tops everything off with live piano music for a truly exquisite feeling. This bar has been around for a century, so it’s really worth checking out. Enjoy!

BOOK A ROOM HERE

Clarion Hotel Oslo

15 Donning Eufemias gate, Gamle Oslo, 0510 Oslo

A wonderful modern hotel, Clarion Hotel Oslo has everything you need for a fantastic stay. The location is excellent, the fitness room is well-equipped, and the rooms are extremely comfortable and come with free toiletries. The incredible breakfast simply needs to be mentioned separately because here you get a fantastic buffet full of organic products. The bar and the restaurant are also on an exceptionally high level. Wonderful!

Citybox Oslo Hotel

Citybox Oslo Hotel

Prinsens gate 6, 0152 Oslo, Norway

Another great place with great service is the Citybox Oslo Hotel . The Citybox Oslo Hotel is within 10 minutes of all the main attractions, so if you want to explore the city this is the place to stay in. The service is very friendly, and clean modern rooms provide plenty of comfort. Citybox is extremely popular among travelers for these reasons, and if you want a reasonably-priced hotel ideal for sightseeing, this is most certainly it. You can’t go wrong with this one!

Saga Poshtel Oslo Central

Oslo Hostel Rønningen

Myrerskogveinen 54 A, 0495, Oslo, Norway

For those of you looking for an Oslo hostel, Oslo Hostel Rønningen is the place to visit. Now, this hostel is in a quiet location outside of the city centre, but the heart of the city can be reached quite easily. What’s particularly interesting is that you can enjoy plenty of activities, from volleyball to table games. They even have a soccer field! If you’re traveling in a group, you’ll love it, and if you’re alone, you’ll have plenty of ways to meet new friends.

Norway is not exactly the cheapest country in the world, so every opportunity you get to save should be taken without too much thought. LockTrip is one such opportunity because it allows you to book accommodation at the lowest possible prices. This translates to up to one-third of the standard price remaining in your pocket, which really is a spectacular deal. Check the website and see which Oslo accommodations you can find there – you won’t be sorry!

Day trips from Oslo

For those of you staying more than one day here, Oslo has plenty of interesting day trip options. The nature in this part of the world is quite stunning, but you may also get an opportunity to visit some other towns and cities (maybe even countries) to get a better feeling of Scandinavia. Here are a few popular day trip destinations that are certainly worth considering.

Lillehammer

Heading to Lillehammer is always a good idea. After all, this is the city that hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics. But the place offers so much more than just a reminder of that! Check out Maihaugen, an open-air museum with jaw-dropping exhibits, enjoy the city’s art scene, and generally get a better feel of Norway, its history, and its way of life. Lillehammer really is a fantastic place to visit, and you won’t regret investing a day to explore it.

Norway is famous around the globe for its fjords, and you can easily organize a day trip from Oslo to explore them. There are plenty of fjord cruises that take off from the city’s harbor, so you can just hop on a boat and enjoy. Be they half-day cruises or full-day cruises, you won’t regret booking them! Explore the options and choose the one that suits you best – the nature will leave you speechless.

Oslo is fairly close to the Swedish border, so it may be quite tempting to hop over and visit another country while you’re here. The ideal destination for that is the city of Karlstad, a place with plenty of museums and the wonderful Lake Vänern to enjoy. The city also gets plenty of sun, so you can really have a very pleasant day trip here. Investing between two and a half and three hours to get here seems like a small price to pay, especially if you get an early start!

A day trip from Oslo to Flåm will probably be the most scenic train trip you ever take. The untouched nature of this part of the world is absolutely magical, and after a while on the train, any trace of humans will literally disappear. Eventually, you will reach Flåm, a charming little town northwest of Oslo where you can rest, relax and thoroughly enjoy the view of the fjords. Perfect for those who want to leave city life behind them for a while.

Extra tips for visiting Oslo

From the airport.

Oslo Gardermoen International Airport has a motorway and high-speed rail link to the city center.

Numerous domestic flights also go in and out of Gardermoen.

The harbor is the most expensive area for restaurants. If you’re on a budget, head about 10 minutes away from the harbor for a cheap option on restaurants. For a bigger guide on Oslo’s prices see this great guide.

Transport card

A 24-hour ticket will cost 90 NOK, other options are available for a longer stay.

There are banks with ATMs throughout the city centre, with a particular concentration along with Karl Johans gate. The tourist office and post office in Oslo S exchange money (into Norwegian kroner only) at a less advantageous rate (usually 3% less than banks). Forex is the largest foreign-exchange service in Scandinavia.

Describe a Country you Want to Visit- IELTS Cue Card

Predicted Cue Cards Topics 2024

Describe a country you want to visit

You should say:

  • where this place is
  • what it is like
  • what you can do in this country

and explain why you want to visit the country.

Sample Answer 1

Many countries have interested me with their histories or natural beauty. But, Japan is the land of my dreams mainly because of its scenic beauty with trees and leaves and houses shaped like pagodas, which all made me close to this country. I am expecting I can visit it someday.

I got to know about the country in my high school classes. Our art teacher used to tell us stories about Japanese paper art in the form of origami characters and we even got a chance to learn it. It made me interested in this country’s culture and people. Apart from that, Japanese technologies have given the world enormous opportunities to explore, see and experience it.

Moreover, what incited me to visit this country is the mindset of the people of Japan. I wanted to witness first-hand how even after witnessing the greatest tragedy in the world – the nuclear bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki- the country has regained its footing on its own. It speaks truly of the strong willpower of the people of Japan that has remade the Country back to an economic power within a few years after the incident. I need to see those memorials and understand their history for documenting and studying them. Therefore, I think it will be a great achievement of mine if I can see this royal country.

Sample Answer 2

As a Hodophile, I literally have no idea what I’d be doing if I wasn’t travelling. Every time I travel, it encourages me to step outside of my comfort zone and provides me with a new perspective on life. It allows me to uncover and appreciate unexplored natural beauty while also giving me the freedom to live in the moment. In a nutshell, I consider travel to be a way of life. So, I’d like to discuss a country that I’d like to visit.

I have been longing to visit the world’s smallest continent and the largest island, Australia, for more than a year; however, due to the pandemic and the travel restrictions, it’s taking more than a long time to visit the country. Travelling to the land of dreams, Australia, is one of the wishes on my bucket list. With diverse landscapes, photogenic natural spaces, picturesque rain forests, scorching deserts, indigenous culture, Australia is undoubtedly one of the best tourist destinations in the world. The country experiences brilliant sunny and humid summers, frigid winters, and spring most of the time. Travellers across the world are captivated by the laid-back lifestyle of the citizens in this remote continent island. However, most of the country is so barren that life doesn’t exist except in the extreme due to the soaring temperatures.

I’m someone who enjoys wandering about a city’s attractions. Therefore, I’ve prepared my vacation itinerary beforehand. I’ve decided to visit some of the remarkable tourist attractions, such as the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, Kakadu National Park, the Sydney Tower, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, as well as indulge in all of the adventurous things like skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, and snowshoeing. One of the main reasons I want to travel to Australia is to visit the world’s most extensive barrier reef system, the Great Barrier Reef. As a professional diver, I’d love to dive in the crystal clear waters to witness the blissful marvel of nature and the colourful marine life, along with viewing the majestic reef.

The 20 friendliest countries for tourists—according to a new report.

Sunset at Camps Bay in South Africa, which has been billed by a new report as the friendliest ... [+] destination for tourists.

Curious which countries around the world tend to be most welcoming and friendly to international travelers? Gauging this type of personality trait on such a large scale is no easy task, but Remitly , a digital financial services company, conducted a global study asking people around the world a series of questions from the Big 5 Personality Test, which is considered a standardized personality test.

When conducting the global study to determine the most friendly countries, the team zeroed in on questions pertaining to the respondents’ “agreeableness” personality trait, which is defined by friendly, kind and cooperative characteristics.

South Africa was crowned the friendliest country in the world, according to the analysis released in June 2024. The country draws safari travelers who want to spot the Big 5 (lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and rhinos) as well as curious shipwreck scuba divers. South Africa is also known as a top wine region with beaches for relaxation and mountains to summit.

Greece came in second, and the study authors point to the longstanding value of “philoxenia,” which translates to hospitality.

Greece was dubbed the second friendliest country in the world, and the most welcoming in Europe, ... [+] according to a 2024 study that analyzed Big 5 Personality data.

Croatia, Mexico, and Sweden round out the list of top five friendliest countries in the world. The United States ranks No. 15 when it comes to friendliness to travelers.

Those who possess high traits of agreeableness generally display more prosocial behaviors and are often highly empathetic, showing great consideration for others, according to the study authors. Survey participants around the world were asked questions like: “How much concern do you feel for others?,” and “do you like to make others feel at ease?”

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

The higher the residents of each nation scored in the test, the more ‘agreeable’ they were deemed and the analysts translated the results into a “friendliness score” for each country.

These scores were then used to calculate an average friendliness score for each nation.

“Friendliness is such a crucial trait in life, even more so if you’re moving or traveling to a new country where you might feel nervous or lonely ,” said Ollie Cassel, head of growth marketing at Remitly in a statement. “The warmth and conviviality of strangers can make all the difference in helping people feel more welcome and settled.”

Friendliness is one thing, but many countries grapple with welcoming travelers amid concerns of over tourism and its environmental impacts. As the summer travel season heats up, many popular destinations around the world are taking steps to curb over tourism, from visitor taxes in several European cities, to a black screen in Fujikawaguchiko, Japan to block views of Mount Fuji, to fake jellyfish warning signs in Mallorca to deter English-speaking travelers.

Travelers crowd the walkway at the Doge's Palace in Piazza San Marco on a busy day in Venice, Italy.

Last summer, views of the U.S. were trending more positive than negative across countries surveyed by the Pew Research Center. Pew reported that a 23-nation median of 59% had favorable views of the U.S., while 30% had unfavorable opinions. Hungary was the only country surveyed that skewed negative on its views of the U.S., with 51% having an unfavorable opinion.

Cue Card # 17: A place/country you would like to visit

Ielts cue card/ candidate task card # 17, describe a place/country that you would like to visit..

You should say:

  • where the place/country is
  • when you plan to visit the place/country
  • how you know about this place/country

and explain why you would like to visit this place/country.

[You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.]

Model Answer:

Life takes us to places whether we like to go to those places or not. But, sometimes, we just feel like we want to visit a particular place/country because we want to deepen our appreciation, understanding and respect for a particular country and its culture about which we already have some good knowledge about. You know, a country like Japan is worth visiting at least once in a lifetime when you hear about it so many times from your father from your childhood. I plan to visit this great country next year so that I can enjoy the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Japan is a country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, this beautiful country lies off the eastern coast of the Asian continent.

So, why would I visit Japan? I could probably give dozens of reasons to answer the question and saying things like Japan is one of the most unique countries in the world because of its modern comfort, rich history and culture in a perfect mix, but that will not quite say how one should really view Japan as a country. I could also say thousands of words describing the amazing Japanese foods, but still, it wouldn’t portray Japan in its true image. Being home to the incredible Mount Fuji, we can say that Japan has some of the most marvellous-looking architecture, but it still wouldn’t quite say what Japan really has to offer to the world. We could also say that Japan probably is the most resilient country in the world because it survived the most horrific and devastating effects of 2nd world war, but still, it wouldn’t say what this great country is exactly all about – a country that arguably offers the most beautiful cherry blossoms in the world.

So, what exactly is Japan all about which arguably offers the most beautiful cherry blossoms in the world? Well… to answer, just when we think that we know all about this beautiful and super, super clean country, we are mesmerized with yet another bigger surprise. That’s Japan!

I wish I would be able to visit this country next year where I have always wanted to be. I have never been to an Olympic event before and it is a great opportunity for me that the next Olympics will be hosted by a country that is on the top of my must-visit country list.

Conservative media uses misleading camera angle of Biden to falsely claim that he was wandering aimlessly

Conservative media outlets selectively used a camera angle that left out important context to spread a claim Thursday and Friday that President Joe Biden wandered off from a meeting of world leaders, but the full video at another angle captured by NBC News tells a different story.

Instead of wandering off, Biden was walking toward a group of parachutists who had just landed in an Italian clearing and gave them two thumbs-up.

The deceptive video began spreading online shortly after a photo opportunity at the G7 summit in Puglia, in southern Italy. Biden and other leaders from some of the world’s largest economies stood on a green lawn while people in military uniforms parachuted in carrying oversized flags of the different countries.

Several cameras, including one from NBC News, were present to document the meeting, where Biden was expected to push for more support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.

Image: President Joe Biden

But the cameras captured slightly different angles, and Biden’s critics seized on one of them to push their allegation that Biden, 81, is absent-minded and too old to be president.

The video is one of many that have circulated widely online in recent weeks attempting to cast relatively normal moments as gaffes or evidence that Biden is suffering from a mental decline. Experts have warned that while advanced technology like generative artificial intelligence can spread misinformation, so-called cheapfakes that often use only minor or selective editing can be more effective at spreading false narratives.

The NBC News video contains nothing to suggest that Biden wandered, a word that often implies aimless walking. Instead, it shows he was walking toward a specific destination: a group of at least three kneeling parachutists.

Many of the deceptive videos went viral on X, which under owner Elon Musk has transformed into an increasingly influential media outlet in conservative circles — one that’s hostile to the Biden administration and where false stories spread with few checks by the platform.

The New York Post, controlled by the conservative Murdoch family, posted a video Thursday that appeared to be taken with a phone in the vertical position, meaning that it showed little of what was happening on either side of Biden. The video shows Biden walking about seven steps away from the other leaders, seemingly with no destination, and giving at least one thumb-up to whatever was off-camera. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni follows him, touches his arm and directs Biden’s attention in the opposite direction.

The New York Post, in text superimposed on the video, said that Biden “appears to wander off” and “has to be pulled back.” Its post on X got 4.2 million videos , according to X’s tally Friday.

Andrew Bates, the White House senior deputy press secretary, criticized the Post’s reporting.

“The Murdoch outlets are so desperate to distract from @POTUS’s record that they just lie,” he wrote on X .

“Here, they use an artificially narrow frame to hide from viewers that he just saw a skydiving demonstration,” he wrote. “He’s saying congratulations to one of the divers and giving a thumbs up.” His post received 2.4 million views.

A spokesperson for the Post did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

But the claims continued from conservative and Republican accounts, which used the same video or other camera angles with limited context. A post from a Republican National Committee used a video that, although it had a wider angle, still did not show what Biden was walking toward. It received 2.9 million views on X.

“WHAT IS BIDEN DOING?” the RNC post asked. The RNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

A post on X from Clay Travis, a conservative talk radio host, used the same video as the RNC. He wrote that Biden “just goes wandering off” and that other national leaders “are babysitting our president in Italy.” His post received 1.1 million views . In a follow-up post Friday, Travis said he stood by his view that Biden is not mentally fit to be president.

The RNC's and Travis' posts did not have community notes on them Friday, though X users had proposed some and were in the process of voting.

The NBC News video angle clearly includes what the others did not: the group of kneeling parachutists who were only steps away from Biden. As they’re kneeling, Biden walks toward them, stops and gives them two thumbs-up. At least one of them appears to acknowledge Biden by standing at attention.

Meloni does pull Biden back to the group as someone appears to begin speaking, but there’s no indication in the NBC News video that Biden was unaware of his surroundings.

Deceptive videos of Biden have become a common tactic during the 2024 presidential campaign, which features Biden and 78-year-old former President Donald Trump. Last year, conservative pundits used low-quality video to spread a false claim that Biden fell asleep during a memorial for wildfire victims in Hawaii.

The Best Things To Do If You Only Have A One-Day Trip In Rome, According To Travelers

R ome, Italy, known as the Eternal City, truly lives up to its name with an endless array of activities, sights, and culinary delights that could keep you busy for an eternity. However, if you only have a one-day trip planned for Rome, you'll have to be more selective with what you see and do. One thing to consider when visiting Rome for only one day is how much walking you are comfortable doing. While many of the locations we recommend are within walking distance of one another, if you would rather take a cab or car service, you'll want to plan for travel time between areas.

Likewise, if you plan to walk during your day, wear comfortable shoes that will help you keep moving on the cobblestones. To blend in,  dress like a local in Italy, and be aware of any dress codes when visiting museums and churches. You might also consider bringing a small bag with a portable charger, water bottle, and anything else to keep you on the move. Additionally, some museums and other locations might prohibit entering with large bags, so you'll want to leave your luggage behind at the hotel or with a luggage storage facility. Pulling from our own experience, along with the first-hand accounts of other travelers, we've selected city highlights and activities that are worth considering if you only have one day in Rome. From famous locations to hidden gems and local treasures, Rome has something for everyone.

Start The Day Like A Roman

To see the most of Rome during your day, you'll want to get an early start to the day and keep the energy high. To be best positioned to visit some of the more popular areas of the city early, we recommend grabbing breakfast or a coffee near Vatican City or in the Parati district. Knowing how to say a  few key phrases before visiting Italy  will help when ordering at a café, and locals often appreciate the effort.

The Italians are known for their classic espresso, and at  Caffé Dei Papi , you can order one and choose from a wide selection of pastries. Traveler reviews on Google Reviews note the friendly service and proximity to Vatican City. If you're looking for somewhere to sit down and enjoy breakfast, head to The Loft . Here, travelers recommend the freshly squeezed orange juice and waffles, via Google Reviews . Another nearby location is the Sciascia Caffè , located in Prati. One traveler calls this establishment their "Favorite Coffee Shop in Rome" on  Tripadvisor .

If you want to get a feel for the area, grab your coffee and pastry to go and walk around the Parati district, known for its well-preserved architecture and shopping. No matter where your morning escapade begins, allow yourself to be swept away by the spirited rhythm of the Italian city.

Visit The Vatican Museums And Sistine Chapel

Nestled within the hallowed walls of Vatican City, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel stand as cultural jewels, inviting visitors on an extraordinary journey through art, history, and spirituality. The Vatican Museums house an extensive collection of masterpieces, spanning centuries and civilizations. You can expect to be captivated by sculptures, paintings, and artifacts during your visit. The pinnacle of this experience awaits within the Sistine Chapel, where Michelangelo's frescoes, including the iconic "The Last Judgment" behind the altar and the "Creation of Adam," adorn the ceiling.

When visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, you'll want to book your tickets ahead of time or schedule a tour to avoid long lines and maximize your time. You'll still need to go through the security line, so allow some extra time for that. Pre-booking provides not only convenience but also the opportunity to secure coveted spots on pre-opening small group tours or weekday visits, helping you to avoid the large tourist crowds in Rome .

One reviewer on Tripadvisor  suggests booking the early morning tour that includes breakfast. Another  Tripadvisor  reviewer mentions that their visit to the Sistine Chapel was not very crowded since they visited early in the morning on a weekday. As your Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel journey concludes, extend your exploration to take in the grandeur of St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica, if time allows.

Tour The Colosseum

The Colosseum stands as an indomitable symbol of history, spectacle, and architectural mastery of ancient Rome. Considered by travelers on  Tripadvisor as an absolute must-see, the Colosseum promises an immersive encounter with the city's rich past. You'll want to secure your tickets to one of the New Seven Wonders of the World well ahead of time, as tickets can sell out during peak travel season.

One traveler notes that they spent about an hour and a half touring the Colosseum with their guide, via Tripadvisor . They booked ahead, but even tickets booked as far out as a month sell out for specific areas of this historic site. One such location within the Colosseum is the underground and gladiator platform. Depending on your schedule, one Colosseum underground tour takes place at night, offering a unique look at this ancient site. This night tour lasts about an hour and a half. Some tours also visit the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, which typically take about two and a half hours.

Go Shopping In Prati

The Prati district is known for its shopping and proximity to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica. Prati itself is not home to many famous landmarks, but it does offer a window into upscale Roman life. This area is an upscale neighborhood with unique boutiques and outdoor vendors. One traveler review on Tripadvisor notes that while Prati is home to high-end shops, you can also find less expensive shopping opportunities. Another review, also from Tripadvisor , mentions that this area was perfect for an evening stroll.

Via Cola Di Rienzo is the main shopping street in Prati. The ambiance of the area is enchanting; not only catering to avid shoppers but also serving as the perfect backdrop for leisurely exploring. From shopping with friends to just enjoying the sites, this tree-lined street will offer you the perfect location to take in the views and travel from place to place.

Wander Around Monti

Rione Monti is a historic neighborhood, or rioni, in Rome. It is known for its charming and bohemian atmosphere, making it a favorite among both locals and visitors. Located in the heart of the city, Rione Monti is adjacent to the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, providing a central and convenient location. A charming escape from the bustling tourist hubs, Monti offers a glimpse into authentic Roman life, where cobblestone streets wind through historic alleys and vibrant piazzas. On  Tripadvisor , one traveler notes that Monti gives you the convenience of being close to some of Rome's major attractions in a non-touristy neighborhood.

A visit to Monti is incomplete without gelato. Travelers recommend  Gelateria Il Capriccio di Carla , where you can choose from an array of flavors that capture the essence of Italian craftsmanship. Traveler reviews on Tripadvisor recommend this ice cream shop because of its unique flavors and friendly staff, so grab a few scoops of this Italian favorite and wander through the lively neighborhood. Whether it's engaging with locals at a neighborhood trattoria, visiting a local restaurant or bar, or simply enjoying the lively ambiance, Monti invites you to relish the authenticity of Roman life in one of the city's most enchanting districts.

Walk To The Pantheon

The Pantheon, which is only about a 30-minute walk from the Colosseum, will take you back to ancient Rome, as the site is one of the most-preserved monuments from that era. If you choose to walk here, you can view the Roman Forum, the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, and Piazza Venezia along the way.

In addition to holding a variety of cultural and spiritual importance, the Pantheon is also an architectural marvel. Its dome was the largest for 1,300 years, and to this day, remains the biggest dome in the world that is not supported.

One traveler review on Tripadvisor says that despite the long line to enter the Pantheon, the views from inside are well worth it. While you can book a tour of the Pantheon, exploring on your own gives more flexibility to your schedule, allowing you to spend as much or as little time in this ancient building as you'd like. Visitors must purchase a ticket to enter the Pantheon, which you can obtain online.

Grab Some Lunch

Antica Salumeria is located right by the Pantheon and has raving reviews on Tripadvisor for its sandwiches and plates of meats and cheese. This lunch won't cost you a fortune either, as many reviews note the reasonable prices and the large portions to keep you fueled during your busy day in Rome. One traveler recommends grabbing the sandwich to-go and sitting outside to enjoy the view of the Pantheon and people-watch. Another lunch spot within walking distance from the Pantheon, as well as Trevi Fountain, is  Achille al Pantheon . Travelers praise the restaurant's food, service, and atmosphere on  Tripadvisor . The menu at Achille al Pantheon includes classic Italian dishes cooked with freshly made pasta.

Since you only have one day to spend seeing Rome, we recommend having a quick lunch but choosing a local restaurant with Italian classics. If you find yourself strolling through the city, take a moment to peruse the menus displayed outside various restaurants along your path. You might stumble upon a hidden gem. And, of course, when in Rome, savoring the local wines is a must.

Visit The Trevi District

Step into the ancient heart of Rome with a visit to Rione Trevi, a district steeped in history and adorned with two of the city's iconic landmarks — the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. This area, with its cobblestone streets and timeless allure, invites you to embark on a journey through the ages.

As one of the most famous fountains globally, the Fontana Di Trevi is a mesmerizing masterpiece that demands attention. No trip to Rome is truly complete without standing in awe of its grandeur. Engage in the tradition of tossing coins over your shoulder into the fountain, as legend has it that this ritual ensures your return to the Eternal City. On  Tripadvisor , one traveler emphasizes the stunning beauty of the fountain and opines that no trip to Rome is complete without a stop here. While taking in the grand view, do not touch the water in the fountain or attempt to reclaim your coin, both of these things can get you heavily fined by local authorities.

The famed Spanish Steps, a bustling hub with a unique charm, is also located in this area. Though sitting on the steps is not permitted, the climb offers architectural marvels and panoramic views. Another traveler review on  Tripadvisor recommends this picturesque stop, highlighting the scenic views from the top level. Soak in the charm, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain, and climb the Spanish Steps — a delightful exploration awaits in Rione Trevi, where every step is a stroll through the timeless beauty of the Eternal City.

Get A Guide

To truly immerse yourself in the rich history and vibrant culture of Rome, a guided tour can elevate your experience to new heights. Opting for an audio tour allows you the flexibility to explore at your own pace while being enriched with insightful commentary that unveils the city's secrets. Consider using  Rick Steves Italy Audio Tours , some of which are free. As you wander through the ancient ruins and iconic landmarks, a knowledgeable guide in your ear will provide context and historical anecdotes, transforming your sightseeing into an educational journey.

For a more active and engaging exploration, a bike tour through the heart of the Eternal City is an excellent choice. One traveler, who reviewed their tour on Tripadvisor , booked an evening bike tour. They said traveling around the city on the provided e-bikes was a breeze and the tour was a unique way to experience Rome. Alternatively, a walking tour offers an intimate encounter with Rome's charm. Strolling through its charming neighborhoods, you can absorb the ambiance and interact with the locals, gaining insights beyond the guidebooks. Whether on foot, bike, or with an audio guide, these tours not only unlock the treasures of Rome but also provide a personalized and enriching exploration of this timeless city.

Take In The Art

No lover of the arts would dare visit Rome without seeing the Borghese Gallery . Visiting the Galleria Borghese, housed in the Borghese Villa, promises a captivating journey into this treasure trove of masterpieces from renowned artists such as Caravaggio, Raphael, and Bernini. The works of art on display create a diverse and harmonious ensemble that reflects the evolution of artistic styles over the centuries.

To enhance the experience, the Galleria Borghese operates on a timed entry system that limits how many guests can enter the gallery at a time, ensuring a more intimate and focused exploration for each visitor. This aspect of the museum is something travelers tend to enjoy since it is less crowded than other landmarks, according to reviews on  Tripadvisor.  With its intimate setting and carefully curated collection, the Galleria Borghese offers a unique and immersive experience for art enthusiasts.

The meticulously designed rooms and lush surroundings of the Borghese Gardens further contribute to the overall enchantment of the visit. Whether you are an art connoisseur or a casual admirer, the Galleria Borghese stands as a testament to Rome's artistic legacy, inviting you to savor the beauty and brilliance of its unparalleled collection.

Head Underground

One unique view of the city can be found underground.  The Catacombs of Rome  can be visited with a tour guide as you head deep into history -- and into the ground. You'll learn about the history of this underground section of Rome, and your guide will keep you from getting lost in this network of burial sites.

These underground cemeteries were used from the second century until the fifth. Although there are miles of catacombs under the city of Rome, only five are open to the public. Since this is a sacred site, you will want to dress modestly, which includes covering your knees and shoulders.

If you opt for a tour of these areas, you will likely visit the Catacombs of Rome, the Capuchin Crypt, and Basilica San Martino Ai Monti. On Tripadvisor , one reviewer who took a tour found on Viator says, "If you only have time to do one tour in Rome, this should be the one." Underground tours can take over three hours, so make sure it's a top activity for your one day in Rome before signing up.

Enjoy Fine Dining

There is no shortage of fine dining experiences in Rome, Italy, but with limited time, you'll need to select one place for a memorable experience. The Ad Hoc Ristorante in Piazza del Popolo has an exceptional menu and a wine list with more than 1,000 Italian wines to select from. One traveler on Tripadvisor  praises the divine truffle tasting menu at the restaurant and perfectly paired wines. To note, the Ad Hoc offers two locations, each with the same menu, but the newer location in Circus Maximus features an outdoor terrace. A reservation will likely be required to dine at either.

Another location to consider is Crispi 19 , which is located in the historical center of Rome. You will find this restaurant between the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, a perfect location for dinner before an evening stroll through the city. Crispi 19 specializes in seafood, and fresh fish arrives on-site daily. One reviewer on  Tripadvisor  describes the seven-course tasting menu as a "special experience."

Take A Cooking Class

Embark on a culinary adventure in the heart of Rome by signing up for a cooking class with a seasoned Italian chef. This immersive experience not only introduces you to the art of crafting delectable pasta but also provides an opportunity to learn the secrets of authentic Italian cuisine. To secure your spot, it's advisable to book the class in advance, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable learning experience.

One review of a course booked through  Airbnb mentions how much they enjoyed learning to craft pasta by hand and learning more about the history of Italian cuisine. Another reviewer, who reviewed a course found through  Tripadvisor , says they liked learning to make pasta but loved meeting other travelers and sharing the unique experience with them. By immersing yourself in the flavors and culinary wisdom of Italy, you can bring home a few recipes and cherished memories of a truly authentic Roman experience.

North Dakota governor supports Trump in Michigan, claims better economy under his tenure

by News Channel 3

Gov. Doug Burgum (R - North Dakota) visited Michigan with the Trump Campaign, the Republican National Committee and the Michigan Republican Party on June 20, 2024. (Bill Krupka/WWMT)

WALKER, Mich. — "If you want to find out what it’s like to live in a dictatorship, we’re living in one now," Governor Doug Burgum (R - North Dakota) said Thursday.

Gov. Burgum, a rumored vice presidential pick for Donald Trump, stopped in West Michigan to join the Trump Campaign, the Republican National Committee and the Michigan Republican Party for a business tour and discussion at Walker's Sobie Meats.

“This is the best of America right here," Burgum said about Sobie Meats. "You’ve got an entrepreneur who takes a risk with his wife, starts this business, and now, creating jobs and creating community with what’s going on here...it’s in places like Sobie Meats where this election is going to be determined.”

  • Related: Pending SCOTUS decisions could directly impact Trump

According to Burgum, one of the first endorsers of the 2024 Trump campaign, the nation was better off while Trump was in office.

He claimed the economy was stronger, and the Trump administration supported jobs as opposed to eliminating jobs, especially in the auto sector.

"World was at peace, and our economy was stronger, we had an administration that was supporting jobs in Michigan as opposed to eliminate all of these auto jobs as they pursue the strategy around EV’s, which again just enslaves us to China," Burgum said. "The two of us [First Lady Kathryn Burgum] decided to spend our time this year, making sure President Trump and the Trump administration gets back into the White House. That’s what we’re doing, and that’s why we’re here."

  • Fact Check Team: Record high 25% of Americans dislike both Biden and Trump

Burgum continued, comparing the Trump administration to a "gentle breeze on our back" in terms of support.

"States were respected, and what we were doing across agriculture and energy and creating electricity, we were supported," Burgum said. "Now, with President Biden, I have the same job description, Governor of this great state, but my job has completely changed."

In response to Thursday's visit, Michigan Biden-Harris Campaign Director Ed Duggan said the pictured Burgum painted is not reality.

According to Duggan, Trump cost the Great Lakes State more than 280,000 jobs, and that his policies sent jobs overseas.

"In 2016, he [Trump] stood in Warren and told workers that not a single plant would close under his watch," Duggan said. "Then he became president, and a plant down the street shuttered. In stark contrast, Michigan has gained over 400,000 jobs under President Biden, including over 25,000 in manufacturing. Donald Trump is a failure, and we can’t afford to let him anywhere near our economy again.”

Donald Trump and Joe Biden are set to participate in a head-to-head debate on June 27.

Biden Gives Legal Protections to Undocumented Spouses of U.S. Citizens

The new policy is one of the most significant actions to protect immigrants in years. It affects about 500,000 people who have been living in the United States for more than a decade.

Biden Announces New Protections for Undocumented Immigrants

President biden announced an executive action to protect about 500,000 undocumented spouses of u.s. citizens from being deported and provide them with a pathway to citizenship..

A few days ago, we marked the 12th anniversary taking care of dreamers that President Obama and I put in place. There were a few of these immigrant — these immigration areas that have had most positive impact and gotten more support from the American people across the board. These young people known as Dreamers, Hispanics, South Asians and more who came to America as children only know America as their home have been able to live and learn out of the shadows. So today I’m announcing new measures to clarify and speed up work visas to help people, including Dreamers, who have graduated from U.S. colleges and universities, landed jobs in high-demand, high-skilled professions that we need to have grow — to see our economy grow. It’s the right thing to do. I’m announcing a common-sense fix to streamline the process for obtaining legal status for immigrants, married, excuse me, to American citizens who live, lived here and lived here for a long time. Let’s be clear. This action still requires undocumented spouses to file all required legal paperwork to remain in the United States. It requires them to pass a criminal background check. And it doesn’t apply to anyone trying to come here today.

The reporters have covered immigration policy and politics during both the Trump and Biden administrations.

President Biden on Tuesday granted far-reaching new protections for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have been living in the United States illegally for years but are married to American citizens.

Under the new policy, some 500,000 undocumented spouses will be shielded from deportation and given a pathway to citizenship and the ability to work legally in the United States. It is one of the most expansive actions to protect immigrants since Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, was enacted 12 years ago to protect those who came to the United States as children.

“These couples have been raising families, sending their kids to church and school, paying taxes, contributing to our country,” Mr. Biden said at the White House, where he was joined by members of Congress and DACA recipients, known as Dreamers. “They’re living in the United States all this time with fear and uncertainty. We can fix that.”

Mr. Biden also said he would make it easier for young immigrants, including Dreamers, to gain access to work visas, a significant move that could help them eventually get a green card. That would protect their legal status even if DACA, which is already tied up in litigation, disappears.

“We’re a much better and stronger nation because of Dreamers,” Mr. Biden said, as he marked the anniversary of the Obama-era DACA program.

The new policy allows Mr. Biden to balance his recent crackdown on asylum with a sweeping pro-immigrant measure at a moment of political peril. With five months until the presidential election, Mr. Biden has been trying to curtail record numbers of illegal border crossings without alienating longtime supporters who have called for a more humane immigration system after the Trump years.

The policy aims to help people who have been living in the United States for more than a decade, building lives and families here. Even though marrying an American citizen generally provides a pathway to U.S. citizenship, people who crossed the southern border illegally — rather than arriving in the country with a visa — are required to return to their home countries to complete the process for a green card.

The new program allows them to remain in the country while they pursue legal status.

There are roughly 1.1 million undocumented immigrants married to American citizens in the United States, according to FWD.us, an immigration advocacy group, but not all of them are eligible for the program.

To be eligible, the spouses must have lived in the United States for 10 years and been married to an American citizen as of June 17. They cannot have a criminal record. The benefits would also extend to the roughly 50,000 children of undocumented spouses who became stepchildren to American citizens.

The new benefits for undocumented spouses will not take effect right away; senior Biden administration officials said they expected the program to begin by the end of the summer. Those eligible will then be able to apply for the benefits.

“The president is sending a message that immigration is not just about the border,” said Marielena Hincapié, an immigration fellow at the Cornell Immigration Law and Policy Program. “He’s focusing on long-term immigrants, not recent arrivals.”

Immediately after the announcement, however, allies of former President Donald J. Trump accused Mr. Biden of being weak on the border. Speaker Mike Johnson said the president was “granting amnesty to hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens.”

America First Legal, a conservative organization run by Stephen Miller, the architect of Mr. Trump’s anti-immigration policies, indicated on social media that the group would challenge the program.

Mr. Biden has said he has had to use executive action to address immigration because Republicans in Congress refuse to act. Republicans blocked a bipartisan immigration bill in February , saying it was not strong enough even though it included some of the most significant restrictions Congress had contemplated in years.

Many of the Republicans, encouraged by Mr. Trump, were not inclined to give Mr. Biden a legislative victory in an election year.

“So much for Republicans caring about the border,” Mr. Biden said on Tuesday.

Two weeks ago, Mr. Biden bypassed Congress and issued an executive order that prevents migrants from seeking asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border when crossings surge. It was the most restrictive border policy instituted by Mr. Biden, or any other modern Democrat.

Almost immediately after the president issued that order, White House officials began privately reassuring progressives that he would also help undocumented immigrants who had been in the nation for years, according to people familiar with the conversations. On Tuesday, Mr. Biden did just that.

The new policy could help Mr. Biden in battleground swing states like Nevada, Arizona and Georgia, which each have more than 100,000 voters who live in “mixed status” households, according to the American Business Immigration Coalition, a group that supports the proposed policy change.

“The road to the White House runs through Nevada, and people in my state are paying attention,” Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Democrat of Nevada, wrote in an opinion essay for Univision this week. She said protecting undocumented spouses would bolster the economy in her state.

Mr. Biden is relying on a program known as “parole in place,” which has been used for other populations like families of military members. The status gives noncitizens the ability to temporarily live and work in the United States without fear of deportation.

One of the people who could be directly affected by the change is Ashley DeAzevedo, the president of American Families United, whose husband is undocumented. Her group supports mixed-status families like hers . The couple has been married for more than a decade and has an 11-year-old child.

“It would be an absolute game changer to not have to worry about being separated, because right now he could technically be removed,” Ms. DeAzevedo said. “There’s always a concern if he gets pulled over or anything like that. It could be, you know, just catastrophic for our family.”

While some Democrats applauded Mr. Biden’s new policy for undocumented spouses, many immigration advocates remained concerned about the life span of the original program the White House celebrated on Tuesday.

In the years since President Barack Obama created DACA in 2012, it has allowed hundreds of thousands of young adults to get jobs and live without fear of deportation.

But DACA has been closed to new applicants since 2017, when Mr. Trump tried to end the program. It remains ensnared in litigation, and its long-term survival remains in question, even though it was revived for existing beneficiaries. Participants are now, on average, in their mid-30s.

Recipients who were once children fearful of having their parents deported “are now the parents afraid of getting deported,” said Bruna Bouhid-Sollod, a senior political director at United We Dream Action, an advocacy group for DACA recipients.

Mr. Biden appeared intent on addressing those fears with his announcement on Tuesday that the administration would make it easier for Dreamers to be sponsored for a work visa by their employer.

“It’s been a big fear for me that DACA could end,” said Monica Sandoval, 32, an emergency room nurse in Columbus, Ind., who enrolled in the program immediately after it was unveiled.

Ms. Sandoval has renewed every two years, enabling her to keep her job and her nursing license.

She hoped the new process would allow her employer, a regional hospital, to sponsor her for a work visa and then a green card.

“This would be life-changing for me,” said Ms. Sandoval, who was brought to the United States when she was 12 and is the mother of two young children. “It would bring security to me and my kids, and I’d know for sure that I could keep doing the work I love to do.”
