Summer and monsoon treks get all the love but there’s something undeniably satisfying about feeling the crunch of snow under your boots. It is magical to fall asleep under some of the clearest skies of the year and to wake up to vast expanses of all-white landscapes that stretch as far as you can see. But the absolute best thing about winter treks is that for the most part, you’ll be able to do it without the crowds. Gear up and get moving on these gorgeous mountain trails.

Duration: 2 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 2,827m; Starting point: Dharamkot

The Triund Trek is perfect for a short weekend getaway in the Himalayas. Summers usually are the busiest months here, so if you’re trying to escape the crowds and enjoy stargazing, October to December is a good time to visit. It can be done in 4-6 hours but camp the night to really enjoy the views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar range. While the trail is short, it’s steep. But every now and then, you will be able to catch your breath during easy, flat trails through rhododendron, pine and coniferous forests. The highlight of the trek is the beautiful sunsets that paint Himachal’s skies and the starry nights.

Markha Valley Trek, Ladakh

12 winter treks in India that promise stunning views

Duration: 6-9 days; Level: Difficult; Highest point: 4,150m; Starting point: Leh

The Markha Valley expedition is one of Ladakh’s most famous summer treks due to its close proximity to Leh. But if a quiet getaway and the chance of spotting the elusive snow leopard is what you’re here for, then opt for a winter trek between January and February. It takes you past the Indus river, Buddhist monasteries, mountain villages, the willow-lined Zingchen gorge and the Hemis National Park. During the walk to the highest point of the trek in Markha, you’ll see fascinating geological creations and large boulders before you head down to camp in Thachungtse, where you can watch herds of blue sheep scale steep cliffs with great agility.

Chadar Trek, Ladakh

Randonneurs trek Chadar 22 janvier 2019 vallée de la riviÚre gelée du Zanskar Ladakh Inde.

Duration: 8 days; Level: Difficult; Highest point: 11,123ft; Starting point: Chilling

If you’re willing to brave temperatures that dip to -20 degrees Celsius and occasional avalanches, the Chadar Trek is an adventure you’ll boast about for a lifetime. During winter, the main road to Zanskar Valley remains closed due to safety reasons, and the only way to reach Ladakh’s main town of Leh is by walking across the frozen river. The trek involves trudging through swathes of ice which are basically the frozen waters of the river; Chadar translates to blanket in Hindi. While for trekkers, this is an adventure, for Zanskaris, this route is a way of life. The 105km trek that requires travellers to cover at least 15km a day begins from Chilling, a village about 37 miles west of Leh. The window to trek is narrow, as the ice only starts to strengthen in January through February; come March it begins to thin and can easily break into sheets of water.

Sham Valley Winter Trek, Ladakh

European trekkers cross a footbridge near the village of Snertse. Zanskar Ladakh India.

Duration: 5-6 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 13,057ft; Starting point: Leh

The Sham Valley trek is ideal for beginners and is best undertaken when Ladakh’s extreme winters start to wane during March-April. The trek not only offers views of snow-covered mountains but also a glimpse into Ladakhi culture, with pitstops at several villages like Sumdo and Hemis Shukpachan. Evenings are spent at local homes savouring Ladakhi cuisine or taking a stroll through local markets. On the way back to Leh, the route also makes a stop at the Alchi monastery, which dates back to the 11th century and sits at the banks of the Indus River. While the trek spans two to three days, a few days are blocked to acclimatise.

Dodital Trek, Uttarakhand

Photo Aquaterra

Photo: Aquaterra

Duration: 6 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 3,900m; Starting point: Kuflon Basics Village, Uttarkashi

Dodital is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, and is named after dodi (Himalayan trout) found in the lake here. The trekking site is said to be beautiful all year round, but all the more gorgeous in the winters (October-March) when it’s covered in inches of snow. Dodital lies in the Garhwal Himalayas. On one side is the Bandarpoonch and Swargarohini ranges and on the other is the Darwa. Day four is when you will climb up to Darwa Pass (4,150m) from Dodital to soak in views of these peaks. While going downhill, unwind with a dip in a natural water pool and dinner by a bonfire.

Kuari Pass Trek, Uttarakhand

Photo Aquaterra

Duration: 6-9 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 3,395m; Starting point: Rishikesh

The Kuari Pass affords some of the most breathtaking views of the Himalayas. They range from Trishul in the east to the peaks of Kedarnath, Chaukhambha, Nilkantha, Kamet, Nanda Devi and Dronagiri as you move southwards. While the pass is accessible for 10 months in the year (except July and August), it’s a great option for a winter trek. It is one of the few passes that’s trekkable this time of the year, with the rest of the Himalayas buried deep in snow. On day seven, after you’ve soaked in panoramic views of snow-clad peaks, the trek takes you to a campsite in India’s little Switzerland—Auli.

Dayara Bugyal Trek, Uttarakhand

Photo Vismay BIndiahikes

Photo: Vismay B/Indiahikes

Duration: 4-8 days; Level: Easy; Highest point: 3,606m; Starting point: Raithal

Look upon snow-covered meadows as far as your eyes reach on this trek. While the trek is accessible for eight months of the year (except during the monsoon months), the Dayara Bugyal is a sight to behold in the winter months due to the sheer vastness of its meadows. Getting to the open stretch is no easy task. It involves an arduous trek through forests and thick snow. While the climb may leave you breathless, so will the views. Standing at 12,000ft, you can see Mt Bandarpoonch and Black Peak towering at 21,000ft, as well as, Mt Srikanth, Draupadi ka Danda, and Mt Jaunli. It’s a sight to behold.

Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek, Uttarakhand

Yash TrivediIndiahikes

Yash Trivedi/Indiahikes

Duration: 6 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 3,562m; Starting point: Lohajung (10-hour drive from Rishikesh)

With camping banned in Uttarakhand’s high-altitude meadows, the famous Roopkund trek is out of bounds. The Bedni Bugyal is a great alternative route. Come to see Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti and stay for the beautiful sunsets on this trek. To reach the highest point at 3,562m, you will pass through dense oak and rhododendron forests. Yet the trail is perfect for beginners, with just a few tricky and challenging sections. The trek is open all year round (besides the monsoon months from June to September), but the winters bring a different kind of beauty to the region.

Brahmatal Trek, Uttarakhand

Sudhir VarniIndiahikes

Sudhir Varni/Indiahikes

Duration: 4-6 days; Level: Moderate; Highest point: 3,733m; Starting point: Lohajung (10-hour drive from Rishikesh)

You can trek here all year round, but come winter (December to March), the Brahmatal trek leads you to a frozen alpine lake—and you won’t just spend a few hours there. If the weather holds up and there isn’t heavy snow, you can also camp by the lake. A cup of tea in hand, admire the beauty of the frozen ice mirroring the majestic Mt Trishul and Mt Nandaghunti. As you descend, there’s also lake Bekaltal which is worth a visit and usually freezes over in winter too. Each campsite on this trek offers unique views of forests and lakes. The best part is you don’t have to work too hard to soak in these views. The trek offers a ridge that you can walk along to reach the summit.

Kedarkantha Trek, Uttarakhand

Gourab NandiIndiahikes

Gourab Nandi/Indiahikes

Duration: 6 days; Level: easy-moderate; Highest point: 3,810m; Starting point: Gaichawan Gaon (10 hours from Dehradun)

The Kedarkantha is a six-day trek in Uttarakhand’s Govind Pashu Vihar National Park. Since Kedarkantha is a standalone mountain, there are several routes to reach the summit, each unique in its own way. You can choose the popular route or the quieter trail. The trek is accessible year-round, but if you’re up for a challenge go in the winter months of December and January. The climb is arduous and steep in the cold, but equally rewarding. The summit is visible right from the base camp and as you climb higher through snow-covered grasslands and forests, the Himalayas come into sight. Along with some of the most dramatic sunsets, the trek also gives you a taste of the local culture and food, as you will spend your first and last night at homestays in Gaichwangaon.

Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek, Uttarakhand

Photo Avijit JamlokiIndiahikes

Photo: Avijit Jamloki/Indiahikes

Duration: 3-6 days; Level: easy-moderate; Highest point: 3,675m; Starting point: Sari (7-8 hours from Rishikesh)

The Chandrashila Summit affords some of the most beautiful views of the Himalayas. On the left are the Gangotri range of peaks, Mt Thalaysagar, the Kedarnath and the Kedar dome, Mandani Parbat and Janhukut. On the right are the Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parbat and Dunagiri, and right in front is Nanda Devi. Every season brings a different flavour to this landscape. But the winters here are spell-binding. Even in December, you’ll get to see rhododendron trees blushing with blooms. The trek is also a delight for birdwatchers. If you get lucky, you may spot the beautiful Himalayan monal. At Baniya Kund, you may also get the chance to camp on snow-covered expanses.

This trek takes you to Singali Ridge, the border that separates India from Nepal. It offers views of some of the most famous peaks that tower above 8,000 metres, including Mt Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. Besides the Kanchenjunga, you can also get a view of peaks famously called The Sleeping Buddha, due to its shape. While the Everest cluster is only visible on day four of the trek, The Sleeping Buddha peaks are visible right from day one. So, you’re promised gorgeous views from start to finish. The Best Winter Trek For Beginners Tungnath Chandrashila Trek

Mountains are just beyond love

Photo of The Best Winter Trek For Beginners Tungnath Chandrashila Trek by Mountain Balak

IIt’s almost 1 year now and nothing much has changed as well . In this very month last year an unplanned trip was made , with the hope to do the Tungnath and Chandrashila trek . The freezing cold January’s of Uttarakhand when Chopta and Chandrashila experienced heavy snowfall , it was quite evident that a travel enthusiast like me would never miss such an opportunity and the thought that this will be my first winter trek made it more interesting . Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the world and is the highest of the five Panch Kedar temples located in the mountain range of Tungnath in Rudraprayag district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The Tungnath (Lord of the peaks) mountains form the Mandakini and Alaknanda river valleys. Located at an altitude of 3,680 m (12,073 ft), and just below the peak of Chandrashila, Tungnath temple is the highest Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva .

As i mentioned that it was an unplanned trip so there was no early morning travel , no equipment and no trekking shoes ( which i would soon be regretting while walking on snow ) . It was a road trip including a winter trek and for the love of driving i was the only one driving all the way from Dehradun to Chopta . We started our journey from Dehradun at 2:30 pm . From Dehradun to Rishikesh its a normal plain road . The real adventure lies when you start driving on mountain roads . Beautiful mountain scenes and ample of greenery though one should be concentrated on the roads as well . After traveling for about 3-4 hours we reach Devprayag ( where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi River meet to give the name Ganga ) . The sangam of the two rivers is quite visible and you can park the car and take pictures . You would be driving along the river for almost your entire journey up to Rudraprayag .

The distance between Devprayag and Rudraprayag is approximately 70 km and takes about 2 hour to reach depending upon the traffic and landslides on the way . For those who love to drive , the roads are in good condition but driving in mountains is a challenge . After driving for 6 hours we finally reached Rudraprayag which was our first stop and last stop before Chopta . We found a budget hotel ( all 4 of us are students ) in Rudraprayag and had our dinner in nearby DHABA . Temperature at Rudraprayag was bone chilling . Next morning a good 90 km drive was waiting for us to reach Chopta .

The next morning at about 8 am we started the Day 2 of our journey driving from Rudraprayag to Chopta . On our way we could easily see mountains covered with snow .

Photo of The Best Winter Trek For Beginners Tungnath Chandrashila Trek 1/10 by Mountain Balak

When nature provides every thing at one place. RIVER , MOUNTAIN , TREES . GOOD MORNING

We took a halt on our way to Chopta . The place was all white . Everything was covered with snow , water was frozen and the temperature very low . We had maggi and tea for our breakfast .

BANIYA KUND . That’s the way to Chopta . All frozen and completely white . On the left is the “CHAUHAN HOME STAY “

The road had a white blanket of frozen snow over it . And driving on it is a very difficult task .

After 20 mins we were at the starting point of the Tungnath Trek . There are few shops as well . A REALLY IMPORTANT ADVICE : If you ever think of doing a winter trek keep an ample amount of water with you .

All set to start our trek and there come the forest guy asking to register ourselves and pay an amount of 150 bucks . The path of the trek seemed to be like a white carpet . With snow melting from the trees and droplets pouring down . My first winter trek seemed to be lovely . I couldn’t stop but just keep on clicking . The place was quite and you could hear the chirping of birds .

I have never seen something like this .

To be frank , everyone labelled this a moderate trek , but when there’s snow it’s soo not “moderate” . The difficulty level is slightly high and as you scale up the amount of oxygen also gets reduced . It’s a 6-7 km trek up to Tungnath Temple and 2 km more to Chadrashila Peak which is also one of the summits . Chopta is also known as the Mini Switzerland and the reason being this .

Covered by snow and that’s the reason ????

They will all remember this one heading to Shiv Ji highest temple on earth .

I started normally the view was also motivating me to reach the temple and finish what i started . But after one hour of trekking i felt i was over weight with every rise the oxygen level got reduced . But with nature and my fellow trekkers motivating me there was no looking back . Taking my own time i started walking slowly so reduce the exertion level .

Surrounded by snow covered peaks .

After reaching a certain height there were only few fellow trekkers along side me . They were helpful in sharing almonds which they said will give the required energy . There group was from Pune and that says a lot about the trek . With every step the temple seem close yet far. But the pictures seem to come out great .

I believe this click captured the best moment of the trek .

Places you fall in love with ❀

After all the hard work , driving about 200 kms , trekking for 3 hours you are about to reach your destination and this destination turned out to be my motivation . Knowing that there was few km to cover there was ample of energy within me . I was curious to see what the view is from the Temple and i must say it was worth every breath , worth every time i thought that i can’t reach the temple . But to all odds and to myself I DID it.

How to time your trek in winter

Category Thursday Trek Talk Expert Opinion

By Swathi Chatrapathy

Today, I want to talk to you about how to time your winter trek correctly.

Talking to trekkers every day, I notice them making two wrong assumptions about trekking in winter:

  • They believe that winter starts and ends in December
  • They believe winter to be a uniform season from start to finish

Trekkers cannot be more wrong.

Firstly, winter starts in early December and lasts all the way until mid-March. December is the mere beginning of winter. Real winter sets in only in January and February!

Secondly, there is an incredible transition in the landscape from the beginning of winter to the end. So dramatic is the transition that you’ll not believe it is the same season!

Here’s an example shot: Both of them were shot in the winter.

low-preview-Kedarkantha - kedarkatha trek - campsite - camp - snow - ice - indiahikes - basecamp

So whether you want to see a dusting of snow or massive fields of snow, or you want to experience snowfall, or even if you want to see no snow, I’ll help you plan your trek correctly.

Let’s get started.

1. To experience the onset of snow, minus the difficulties of winter: Early December to mid-December

Many trekkers believe that winter starts late in December. But that’s not true.

Our co-founder, Sandhya UC, says, “We start experiencing extremely cold winds in the mountains right from November. There’s a layer of frost every morning. This usually melts away within an hour. But post sundown, it gets as cold as winter, minus the snow. By the middle of November, we get the first dustings of snowfall. They melt quickly, but a bit sticks as well. The upper reaches of our treks start accumulating more snow.”

From early December to mid-December is when the mountains usually receive the first snow. It is usually a mild dusting of snow that melts away within a day or two, but it does not melt totally. A bit stays on the ground. But if you get to experience this first winter snow, it’s extremely special. You see a magical sight of white as well as golden.

A few benefits of trekking from early December to mid-December:

  • There are high chances of experiencing the first winter snow
  • You get terrific, clear skies and crisp mountain views. Following October and November, this is the best time for stargazing and astrophotography
  • This season has the highest trek-completion success rate compared to the rest of winter.
  • The temperatures are not as harsh as the rest of winter

2. A light layer of snow, with chances of 1-2 snowfalls - mid-December to end of December

This is by far the most popular winter trekking time. It's the holiday season when most trekkers in the country end up in the mountains.

Frankly, if I were you, I would choose the seasons before and after this to trek. Unruly crowds often destroy the serenity of the mountains. Popular treks like Kedarkantha and Brahmatal see a footfall as high as 1000 trekkers per day.

If you ignore the crowd, though, there are some lovely things about trekking between mid-December and the end of December.

Benefits of trekking from mid-December to the end of December:

  • There are at least 1-2 Western disturbances bringing in snowfall this season.
  • With dropping temperatures, this snow doesn’t melt away easily. It forms a light layer of snow.
  • Ankle deep snow makes for lovely snow-walks.
  • The chances of completing the trek are still high, compared to January and February

winter trek for beginners

3. The Big Snow Season - January, February, until mid-March

Now this is when real winter sets in. Jan, Feb, and until mid-March are what we term the “Big Snow Season” at Indiahikes. This is when luxuriant blankets of snow cover most Himalayan treks.

With at least 3-4 more Western disturbances and plummeting temperatures, the deposit of snow increases from ankle-deep to knee-deep to waist-deep and sometimes even chest-deep in sections!

For trekkers who are craving to experience snow, this is the most delightful time of the winter to trek. Right from Day 1, when you’re in the forests, you see fairy-tale-like snowy settings. The boughs of trees are beautifully laden with snow. The treetops are drizzled with frost. As you climb higher, you see meadows and clearings covered in a vast white blanket. The ground below you is a soft, powdery carpet. Our camps are usually in the heart of this snow deposit.

Frankly, most winter photos of Himalayan treks that you see are taken in this Big Snow season and not in December.

There are many benefits to trekking in January, February, and mid-March:

  • It has the maximum snow deposit compared to all of winter
  • There are greater chances of experiencing snowfall
  • It has the fewest crowds. You’ll have the mountains all to yourself
  • Snow experiences like snow-slides, snowball fights, snow-caves come alive in this season

True, there are 10% chances that heavy snowfall may not allow you to complete the trek. But even that experience is worth it. The fact that you are covered by Indiahikes' Trek Again Policy is a good sweetner. It allows you to repeat your trek later without having to pay us for it.

Trekking  in itself is a challenging journey on foot to scale the altitude of  mighty mountains . Add to it the ambience offered by winters, and the challenge increases multifold.  Winter Trek in India  in the Himalayas is usually from November till the end of March. It is not a favourite season for lethargic trekkers. But it is a golden opportunity for the energetic souls and adventure buffs, who seek adrenaline rushes with every breath. The difficulty bar is raised quite a bit due to higher altitudes and lower temperate. It’s a unique wilderness experience that offers breathtaking views of mighty mountain peaks veiled with pure, white snow.

Winter Treks   offer abundance when it comes to quiet, expansive snowscapes. Trekkers often lose the sense of time, while treading the footsteps left in the snow. For a few,  Winter Treks  are an excuse to step out of their comfort zones while for others it’s an escape from monotonous, cacophonous city life.

Here is the list of  Top Winter Treks of India   and the Himalayas.

1. Winter Kuari Pass Trek: A snowy trail in the heart of Garhwal Region: Uttarakhand

Winter Kuari Pass Trek Uttarakhand

Kuari pass Trek  is a beautiful place in  Uttarakhand . This trek gained popularity around the 1900s when some eminent personalities of the British era undertook this route. Some names of British enthusiasts include Eric Shipton, Bill Tilman, and the very well-known Lord Curzon. It’s important to note that the trail of this trek is called the Curzon Trail. “ Kuari Pass  is one of the most beautiful treks of winter. The temperature usually does not go below -8C, making it a moderate trek,” says  Rakesh Pant , ”It is a luxurious walk through Himalayan meadows. The beauty is so picturesque that you forget the toughness of the trek. Several peaks grab your attention – like Nanda Devi, Neelkant, Dronagiri, and Mukut Parbat. You get a chance to have a close look at these famous peaks during this trek. This trek also allows you to walk through the jungles of Oak and Deodar trees. This jungle is home to many wild animals like Leopards, Himalayan Black bears, and a few others. Rhododendron flowers are also seen abundantly. These bright-coloured flowers are used for soft drinks and are known for some medicinal use as well. The highest point of the trek,  Kuari  is at 13990 ft and offers an extraordinary view of the world. The trek also lets you visit Auli, a famous skiing destination. “What mesmerised me was the pure white carpet of snow that covered every inch of what my eyes could capture. Sheer bliss,” says Neha Mohta travel blogger and a trekker with  Trek the Himalayas .

2. Kedarkantha Trek

Kedarkantha Trek  is quite possibly the most pursued snow journeying route in India. With falling winter snow it’s a hypnotising pictorial view and what’s more alluring, is the perspective on the Mighty Himalayas from the path right to the top. Settled at a stature of 3810 metres which is around 12,500 feet this is an ideal journeying trail which covers a merged distance of 20 km. The list of best  winter trekking  is incomplete without mention of this classic  winter trek . It is a perfect blend of scenic views, walks through remote Garhwal villages and of course, the joy of trekking on snow. It will be surprising to know that the winter snow sets in by mid-December and usually stays up until mid-April. Located in the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park in Uttarkashi,  Kedarkantha  is one of the easiest  winter treks .

3. Brahmatal Trek: A trail made by the gods

For someone who has never been on a  winter trek ,  Brahmatal Trek  is a must on the list for this winter. Situated in  Uttarakhand , the trek offers ample opportunities to experience winter like never before. It is a wonder of winter with just the right amount of snow to tease the trekkers and give them a taste of what  winter trekking  is like. The trail seamlessly binds adventure with ease to present an experience that is a magnet to avid trekkers. This unique trail passes through vast forests with high peaks following you wherever you go. With a few peaks touching 7000 metres, the experience of treading the path is truly an enchanting one.

“I have been part of many trekking but this one is beyond describing in words. It’s a real fantasy. It’s like I am beholding paradise with my open eyes. Every click is arresting,” says Vaibhav, a photographer and trekker with  Trek the Himalayas .  These   winter treks , along with a few others amp up your trekking experience in the cold times. The beauty of these trails can rival some of the best trekking trails in the world. No matter how much we write about this trekking, it can only be felt once you trek these expenses personally. And if you’re lucky, you can peep into the lives of the locals as they live and breathe the Himalayas every single day. Truly, time stands still, as you walk on the snowy paths, following the footsteps of trek leaders. And when you look up, it’s as if the moment is frozen in time. Just for you.

4. Dayara Bugyal Trek

It is a well-known fact that with the winter season comes the unbearable cold and snow on the path brings additional challenges. Yet, no one can deny that the dove-white snow also brings immense adventure with alluring mountain views.  Dayara Bugyal Trek  is the best choice, which is comparably easy plus offers sublime highlands. The huge pastures and meadows cover themselves with the blanket of white snow to protect their creatures from the shivering cold. Walking on this white carpet seems like walking on a frozen sea with beautiful flowers and alpine trees around you. “We have purposefully planned a trail passing through  Barnala lake . It is a flawless mirror reflecting the mesmerising beauty around it,” says  Rakesh Pant . As you rise you will find clear views of the snow-laden Bandarpoonch, Gangotri, and Shrikanth peaks. Hiking and camping under the snow-coated alpine forest cover under the glistering dark sky will rejuvenate you for upcoming surprises.  Dayara Bugyal Trek  is suitable for all age groups of trekkers. “We get positive reviews from kids. They are true admirers of nature.  Dayara  has become a favourite amongst them,” says  Sandeep Rawat .

5. Sandakphu Trek

Every trekker wants to get to the top of the world someday. High above the clouds such that the other mountains look like an island floating between the ocean of the clouds. One must appreciate and feel the beauty of the top from the low before getting to the high. Sandakphu Trek makes this wish come true for every mountain lover. The highest peaks of the Earth, Makalu, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, and Everest clustered together soring up stand tall as you try to capture their glimpses. With the cold season, the snow gets filled in the cracks and gullies from the cap to the land. One cannot stop guessing about climbing up them to get to the mountaintop. “We are excited to introduce Sandakphu  this season. I am eager to see the happiness our trekkers would experience on this unique trail”, says  Rakesh Pant . The entire trek route passes to and fro the Indo-Nepal border, presenting a blend of cultural and geographical variations of the Nepalese and the Indian land. “This trek is worth it in all the seasons. Just to see how Sleeping Buddha formed by Kanchenjunga range changes its colour in the early sunlight,” remembers Pooja, a  TTH trekker. The trail also takes you to the Singalila National Park, which is flooded with flora and fauna, cheering you up at every step. Unexpectedly, one can also witness the alpine lake Kalapokhri lake, seamlessly merging with the white wonderland.

6. Chopta Chandrashila Deoria Tal – Trekking through the whistling woods

A compelling  winter trek ,  Chopta Chandrashila Trek  will take you through snow-filled highlands, camp by a pristine icy lake, meandering forest trails, stopover at an ancient temple filled with myths, and finally, present a jaw-dropping summit vista. Some of the mightiest peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas—Chaukhamba, Bandarpunch, and Kedar Range rise to vision on this trek from early on and maximise your chances of awe-inspiring peak photography. This trail gets especially inviting in the winter because light pours down upon the enchanting Himalayan scene with the quality of the liquid diamond and the clear blue skies provide the perfect backdrop. Trekking to  Chopta Chandrashila Trek  in the winter, you will find no dearth of snow and all the peculiar challenges that come with it. Nevertheless, The trek remains a most recommended one, graded easy and okayed for beginning trekkers even in the peak of a snowy winter. “I passed through Rohini Bugyal two years ago in spring when the trail was overcome with the red of rhododendrons but winter has transformed the path into a canvas of sparkling snow. The experience of winter deepened as we went further and climaxed at the summit of Chandrashila after a truly challenging climb.” relates Anuran a regular Himalayan explorer who trekked with  TTH  one winter.

7. Chadar Trek: A walk on the frozen Zanskar river

This is a dream of every avid trekker – from India and across the world. It derives its name from the thin layer of ice formed over the  Zanskar River in Winter . “ Chadar  is one of the most challenging treks. The temperatures at the trail can go as low as -30C, which calls for ample physical and mental endurance,” says  Rakesh Pant,  founder-partner of  Trek the Himalayas .  At an altitude of 11,123 feet, you need to be ready for some frozen surprises. The 9-day trek covers a distance of approx 75 km – most of which is on the ‘ Chadar ’. Continual walking on the ice makes the icy layer thin down a bit or in some places, even break. The sweet gurgling sound of the river is music to ears and a hint towards an adventure lying ahead.  Emily Bridger , a trekker with  Trek the Himalayas  says, “The  Chadar trek  is an unforgettable experience. I have travelled worldwide but here I have witnessed some of the best natural views. The experience has made a mark on life.” “The difficulty level of th e  Chadar trek  is quite high. We recommend it only to seasoned trekkers who have built good stamina and high fitness levels,” says  Sandeep Rawat,  founder-partner  Trek the Himalayas .

The Best Winter Trek in India for Beginners - KedarKantha

Kedarkantha trek is one of the best winter trek in India and not just in Uttrakhand. This winter trek is easy for both experts as well as beginning level trekker due to which Kedarkantha becomes one of the most visited treks in Uttarakhand.

It is also easy to reach the base camp for the commencement this winter trek. People do this trek of 24 kilometres according to their convenience in 2 to 4 days. For those who have more days and want to do a longer trek, the path of Har Ki Doon also leaves from the base camp at Sankari, that is, you can spend a week or more here if you want to relax.

This trek is ideal for all those who want to spend some time in the lap of nature or wish to see the snow. Upon reaching the peak of Kedarkantha, if the weather is clear, a 360-degree view of the Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayas, Rupin Valley, Har Ki Doon Valley and other places around. What could be more beautiful than this for any tourist or a nomad? Even in summers, snow is seen here till June, so in the rainy season, small bugyals give a soothing view to the eyes. It is also a thrill for anyone to conquer the peak of 3800 meters for the first time. This best winter trek is gaining a lot of fame as a snow trek because it is possible to go here in winters which is not possible for a lot of other treks. Another feature of this trek is the places you pass on the journey to the peak. Juda's pond (Juda Ka Tal), which is a small water pond, it is thrilling to see the water accumulated in winters, while the base camp at Sankari is also in a very beautiful place which is white in winters and full of colours the rest of the time.

How difficult is the Kedarkantha winter trek for a first-timer?

This winter trek is categorized as easy or moderate to moderate difficulty trek. In winters the trek is definitely of moderate difficulty because it is not easy to walk when there is snow everywhere. There is a need to be careful on the snow and also be aware of how to deal with it. The rest of the time everything will depend on your physical health. If you do any light work like walking or cycling, then you can do this trek in two days. If you are not habitual of walking at all, you will still do it in 3 days. By doing it in 3 days, you will not have any problem even going to the height and you will be able to keep pace with the environment.

However, if you start warm-up walking for the trek for about 5 or 7 kilometres, 4 or 5 days before leaving, it will be even better. This is at least a qualification and one should also do warm-up walking before going on any trek in the Himalayas. Is a guide necessary for this winter trek?

Whether or not you want a guide to Kedarkantha, it all depends on you. If you are going with a trekking company’s package, then you do not have to worry about the guide, you will get it.

If you are going on your own and you have friends or family with you, then you should work with the porter instead of a guide because even if you have to carry your things, you will have to take the porter. If you are going in the summers, you can see the path clearly. In the winter, after the fresh snowfall, the path is not visible many times and sometimes this makes it difficult to choose the right path in the snow. If you are going during the trekking season, you will find so many people on this trek that you will not have to ask for directions.

Whether the trekking season is on or not, how many people are there on the peak, you will get all this information from Sankari base camp, over there you can ask your questions from the people and if you are still not satisfied, do not skimp in hiring a porter. Goods can also be transported by mules from Kedarkantha Base Camp at Sankari. If you decide to ger a mule to transport your belongings, you will also get a local man with you and he can give you more information about the trek like weather conditions at that time.

From where can we get the camping gears?

All the goods are found at the hotel halls and shops at the bus stand in Sankri. There is a small village, if you inquire, you will get all the information and equipment easily.

Will we have to carry the ration also?

You cannot finish this winter trek in one day, so even if at least two days are considered, then you have to eat dinner. You have breakfast at Sankari base camp and pack some food for the first day. If you have not booked any travel package with a trekking company, then you can talk to them and just book stay and food without the whole package. For this, you have to get information and confirmation at Sankari first. We also found a tea shop between Sankri and Juda Talab in cold winter, at which there was also a provision to eat and drink.

It was time for the camp to be uprooted, during the rest of the season, many such independent shops will also be found at the base camp and the pond of Juda (Juda Ka Tal). In this case, you will not have to carry your food items or carry utensils and stoves. You can also carry uncooked food with utensils and cook food comfortably at the top as you can find ample of wood to burn. One more thing - whether you take foodstuff or not, but keep dry food items with you, which contain biscuits, snacks, roasted chickpeas, chocolate, etc. It is necessary and very important.

What are important things to carry for Kedarkantha trek trail?

You are recommended to carry the following things with you:

  • Take a t-shirt, Pajama's thermals, pairs of socks, jacket, rain jacket and rain pyjama's.
  • Good trekking shoes.
  • Gloves, Woolen Cap, Neck Warmer.
  • Bag pack and Rain cover for a bag pack.
  • Trekking stick, Torch or torch in the phone, Medicines.

1) Winter Hiking Boots

Embarking on a winter hiking adventure begins with the right foundation – your boots. Opt for insulated winter hiking boots to shield your feet from the dual threats of cold and moisture. Insulation is crucial, as it traps heat and keeps your feet warm in chilly temperatures. Thinsulate or PrimaLoft are popular insulation materials that strike a balance between warmth and bulk, ensuring your boots remain comfortably lightweight.

When selecting winter hiking boots, you should also consider their waterproofing capabilities. GORE-TEX and similar membranes offer reliable water resistance, preventing melting snow or unexpected puddles from seeping into your boots. Additionally, look for boots with sturdy and slip-resistant soles to navigate icy trails with confidence. It's wise to invest in boots that provide ankle support, reducing the risk of twists or sprains on uneven terrain.

Now, let's talk about socks . As a crucial layer between your feet and the boots, socks play a pivotal role in maintaining warmth and preventing blisters. Opt for moisture-wicking thermal socks that keep sweat away from your skin, reducing the likelihood of cold feet. Bring an extra pair to change into if your feet get damp during your hike. Remember, happy feet make for an enjoyable winter hiking experience!

2) Layered Clothing

Dressing in layers is a strategic approach to managing your body temperature during winter hikes. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer that efficiently draws sweat away from your skin, preventing discomfort caused by damp clothing. Merino wool and synthetic materials are excellent choices for base layers. Over this, add an insulating layer like fleece or down to trap and retain body heat. The outer layer should be windproof and waterproof to shield you from the elements, especially if you encounter unexpected snowfall or rain.

Opt for a winter hiking jacket with ventilation options, such as underarm zippers, to regulate your body temperature as you exert yourself. Adjustable cuffs and hems allow you to seal in warmth, while a breathable outer layer prevents overheating. The key is to adapt your layers according to the weather conditions and your level of exertion. Carry an extra insulating layer in your backpack to put on during breaks, ensuring you stay comfortably warm throughout your winter hike.

3) Warm Hat and Gloves

In winter, a substantial amount of body heat escapes through the head, making a warm hat a non-negotiable item. Choose a winter hiking hat that covers your ears for maximum warmth, and consider one with moisture-wicking properties to manage perspiration. Beanie-style hats made from materials like fleece or wool are popular choices. When selecting winter gloves , prioritize insulated options that keep your fingers warm without sacrificing dexterity. Look for gloves with touchscreen compatibility, allowing you to use your phone without exposing your hands to the cold.

Consider bringing an extra pair of gloves in case the first pair gets wet. Wet gloves can quickly sap away body heat and lead to discomfort. Additionally, waterproof or water-resistant gloves are a smart choice for added protection in snowy conditions. A glove liner made of a moisture-wicking material can enhance warmth and comfort. Remember, keeping your extremities warm is crucial for an enjoyable and safe winter hike.

4) Winter Hiking Pants

When it comes to winter hiking, choosing the right pants is crucial for comfort and protection against the elements. Unlike regular hiking pants, winter hiking pants are designed to provide insulation, keep you dry, and protect against cold winds. Look for pants made from water-resistant or waterproof materials to shield you from snow and rain. Additionally, pants with built-in insulation or the option to layer underneath will keep your legs warm in chilly temperatures.

Opt for pants with reinforced knees and seat areas, as these high-wear zones are more susceptible to abrasions and moisture. Many winter hiking pants also feature ventilation options, such as zippered vents, to regulate body temperature during periods of intense activity. Elastic cuffs or gaiters at the bottom of the pants can effectively seal out snow, preventing it from entering your boots. Consider pants with an adjustable waistband for a customized fit, ensuring comfort throughout your winter adventure. Remember that a proper fit is essential to allow freedom of movement while accommodating additional layers underneath when needed.

5) Backpack With Essentials

Your backpack is not just a vessel for carrying your belongings; it's your lifeline on the trail. Begin by selecting a winter hiking backpack with sufficient capacity to carry all your essentials comfortably. Look for one with adjustable straps and a padded hip belt for optimal weight distribution, reducing strain on your back during extended hikes.

In your winter hiking backpack, prioritize essentials like water and snacks to stay hydrated and fueled. Opt for an insulated water bottle to prevent liquids from freezing in colder temperatures. Pack nutrient-dense snacks that won't freeze, such as energy bars, nuts, and dried fruits. Consider bringing a thermos filled with a warm beverage to boost your morale and help maintain body heat. Include a well-stocked first aid kit tailored to winter conditions. Items such as blister pads, pain relievers, and hand warmers can be crucial in unexpected situations. A multi-tool or a small knife may come in handy for various tasks, from cutting tape to fixing gear issues on the trail.

And remember to organize your backpack thoughtfully, placing frequently used items in easily accessible pockets. Pack heavier items closer to your back for better balance. Use compression straps to secure your load and prevent it from shifting during the hike.

6) Trekking Poles

winter hiking gear for beginners

Trekking poles are not just for seasoned hikers; they are a game-changer for anyone navigating winter trails. These lightweight and adjustable tools provide invaluable support, especially when trekking through snowy or icy terrain. Equipped with ergonomic handles and sturdy wrist straps, trekking poles enhance stability and balance, reducing the risk of slips and falls on slippery surfaces.

When selecting trekking poles, consider those with adjustable lengths to accommodate varying terrains. Shorten them for uphill climbs and lengthen them for descents. Some poles even come with integrated shock absorbers, easing the impact on your joints with each step. As an added bonus, trekking poles can be a lifesaver when crossing streams or negotiating uneven paths. To maximize their effectiveness, plant the poles firmly with each step and use them to test the stability of the ground ahead. With the right technique, trekking poles become an extension of your body, making your winter hike safer and more enjoyable.

Remember to check the conditions of the terrain you'll be traversing. In deep snow, attach snow baskets to the trekking poles to prevent them from sinking. And if you encounter icy patches, some poles come with attachments like spike tips for enhanced grip. Investing in quality trekking poles ensures you have a reliable support system that can significantly enhance your winter hiking experience, making it not just a walk in the snow but a confident stride through winter's wonderland.

7) Snow Gaiters

Snow gaiters are unsung heroes in the winter hiker's arsenal, forming a protective barrier between your boots and the elements. These waterproof and breathable coverings wrap around your lower legs and the tops of your boots, preventing snow, water, and debris from entering. They are particularly useful when navigating deep snow or trudging through areas with dense underbrush.

When putting on snow gaiters, ensure a snug fit to prevent any gaps where snow could sneak in. Look for gaiters with durable, reinforced materials at the bottom to withstand contact with rough terrain. Many models come with adjustable straps and buckles to secure them in place, and some even feature reflective elements for added visibility in low-light conditions. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced hiker, incorporating snow gaiters into your winter gear ensemble will significantly enhance your comfort and protection on the trail.

8) Headlamp or Flashlight

Navigating winter trails in low-light conditions requires a reliable light source, making a headlamp or flashlight a crucial piece of gear. Choose a headlamp with adjustable brightness levels to conserve battery life and adapt to different lighting needs. Ensure it has a waterproof rating, as winter conditions may include snow or sleet. It's wise to carry spare batteries in a waterproof container to avoid being left in the dark. Additionally, consider a headlamp with a red-light mode; this preserves night vision and minimizes the disturbance to fellow hikers.

During winter hikes, the early onset of darkness means your light source is your lifeline. Practice using your headlamp or flashlight before hitting the trail, familiarizing yourself with its settings and beam distance. Keep the light easily accessible in your backpack, and periodically check the batteries to ensure they are in good condition. A well-maintained light source is not just for emergencies but also enhances the overall experience of a winter hike, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings even as the sun sets.

9) Thermal Socks

When it comes to winter hiking, keeping your feet warm and dry is paramount, and thermal socks play a crucial role in achieving this. Invest in high-quality, moisture-wicking thermal socks designed specifically for cold weather. Consider a blend of materials like merino wool for insulation and breathability. Merino wool naturally wicks away moisture, preventing sweat from accumulating and causing discomfort.

Proper footwear and sock combination is essential for preventing blisters and maintaining warmth. Ensure your thermal socks fit snugly but not too tight, as compression can restrict blood flow and decrease insulation. It's advisable to carry an extra pair of thermal socks in your backpack, especially on longer hikes. If your feet get wet during the journey, changing into dry socks can make a significant difference in your comfort level. Remember, happy feet make for a happy winter hiking experience!

10) Emergency Shelter

In the unpredictable conditions of winter, having a lightweight emergency shelter is a wise precaution. Options include emergency bivy sacks , space blankets, or compact tents designed for quick setup. Choose a shelter that is easy to carry and set up, providing protection against wind and cold temperatures. It can serve as a crucial refuge if you find yourself stranded due to unexpected weather changes or other emergencies.

Familiarize yourself with the setup of your emergency shelter before heading out on the trail. Practice assembling it in controlled conditions to ensure you can quickly and efficiently deploy it if needed. Remember that even a brief stop in extreme cold can lead to discomfort or, in severe cases, hypothermia. Having an emergency shelter in your backpack adds a layer of safety and can make a significant difference in your ability to weather unexpected challenges during a winter hike.

11) Sunglasses

Photo by Karsten Winegeart on Unsplash

Don't underestimate the power of a good pair of sunglasses when heading out for a winter hike. The snow-covered landscape reflects the sun's rays, creating a dazzling and potentially harmful glare. For beginners, investing in a pair of sunglasses designed for winter activities is crucial. Look for sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Polarized sunglasses are also beneficial, as they help reduce glare, making it easier to see the terrain and avoid hazards like ice patches.

Besides protecting your eyes from the sun, sunglasses can also provide a barrier against the biting cold wind. The winter breeze can be harsh on your eyes, leading to discomfort and even temporary vision impairment. A well-fitted pair of sunglasses acts as a windbreak, keeping your eyes comfortable and allowing you to focus on the beauty of the winter landscape without squinting. When choosing sunglasses, opt for a design that covers your eyes well, providing maximum protection against both the sun and the elements. With the right pair, you'll not only enhance your visual experience but also ensure the safety and well-being of your eyes during your winter hikes.

12) Navigation Tools

Winter landscapes can transform familiar trails, making navigation challenging. Having reliable navigation tools is crucial for staying on course and finding your way in changing conditions. A detailed map of the trail, coupled with a compass or a GPS device , forms a powerful combination. Choose a topographic map that highlights key features and elevations, aiding in better route planning.

Before embarking on your winter hike, familiarize yourself with the map and the trail's landmarks. Note key points such as trail junctions, water sources, and notable terrain features. Check your compass or GPS device to ensure they are functioning correctly and have sufficient battery life. Keep in mind that electronic devices may experience faster battery drainage in cold temperatures, so carry spare batteries or a power bank.

During the hike, regularly cross-reference your location with the map and use the compass or GPS device to confirm your heading. Pay attention to trail markers and any distinctive features to maintain your bearings. If you encounter unexpected changes in weather or visibility, having well-practiced navigational skills becomes even more critical. By mastering these tools, you enhance your ability to enjoy the winter scenery while confidently exploring the great outdoors.

Why Do Trekkers Prefer Winter Treks in India?

Though every season comes with a charm, trekkers who like to hike in the mountains have a soft corner for winter. Trekking in the lower altitude peaks is a must for anyone who loves to dwell in an adventure, as the cold temperature and serene atmosphere complement the blood rush and high adrenaline. Here are some reasons trekkers decide to wear their hiking boots in the chilly season:

  • Gigantic mountains covered in magical snow make you feel like you have come to a white paradise.
  • The winter season provides an out-of-this-world sighting of exotic fauna and flora.
  • No excess sweating or sunstroke problems.
  • The snow-covered caves look more mysterious than ever.
  • The winter backdrop allows for the most remarkable pictures.

Winter Trekking in India – A few tips!

Trekking in cold winds hurts our eyes, the chill makes us tremble, and the breeze stings our nostrils, yet all of these things pale in comparison to the breathtaking beauty of the winter landscape. The difficulty of surviving in this winter wonderland is commensurate with the stunning beauty of this environment; here are some pointers to help you out.

People unfamiliar with cold weather tend to believe they must stay bundled up at all times, but it’s crucial to avoid getting overheated.

Experts drop down to their minimum wool layers when working out in the cold to prevent sweat from accumulating. You want as little dampness as possible on your body.

And, when trekkers halt, they rapidly pull their layers back up.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated in cold weather can be challenging: pack at least one insulated and one non-insulated water bottle, plus one thermos bottle.

  • The non-insulated water will quickly cool down, so you can only drink from it in the morning.
  • The insulated one will rescue you when you need your second bottle in the afternoon.
  • The thermos can be used for soup or tea. Avoid caffeine.

Prepare Your Body

  • Exercise daily to build up your stamina and boost your energy level.
  • Focus on breathing exercises, which will significantly help your trekking experience.

Always Listen to Your Guide

As thrilling as it may sound, snow treks offer more excitement than simply scaling the snow cap.

You must always listen to your guide in the erratic Himalayas since things can turn challenging and occasionally even deadly. Your guide should be aware of your whereabouts at all times.

With their detailed excursions, experienced guides, and 24X7 customer services, Travgenix is the best bet for trekking beginners looking for the best winter treks in India. Answer the Himalayas’ calls this winter and book your life-changing trekking trip today with Travegnix for the best lifelong experience in the Himalayan mountains.

Winter picks, an offbeat trek route to sandakphu.

Against the picturesque background of snow-capped mountain peaks, lies the immortal Sandakphu. Hailed as the highest point in West Bengal, Sandakphu in the Singalila Ridge is a paradise for trekkers. For more than a decade, the Sandakphu trek has been on the bucket list of backpackers all over the world. A journey to any place around the world is steeped in adventure but trekking offers a phenomenal perspective of life.

The mesmerizing trek will offer you a peek into four of the five highest peaks in the world namely Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. If you are a lover of tranquility, natural wonders, and all things rejuvenating, then get prepared to come closer to paradise at Sandakphu.

Sikkim Kanchenjunga Goechala Trek

From the forested hills of Yuksom to the alpine meadows of Tshokha, and finally to the Goechala Pass (4940 meters), where you are confronted with a jaw-dropping view of Kanchenjunga’s (8,586 m) south face. In all directions, sheer rocky mountains surround you. You will gain a true sense of perspective as you stand in awe in front of these monumental peaks.

Trek up through lush semi-tropical forests, crossing crystal-clear streams and rivers along the ascent. Listen to the peaceful flowing waterfall just below Prek Chu. Continue moving through the highlands from Tshoka to Dzongri, taking an exploration/acclimatization day. You’ll be amazed by the rugged terrain surrounding these points. From Dzongri, keep climbing through Pandim’s shadow before ascending even further to Goechala (5002 meters/16,410 feet).

  • Everest Base Camp Trek

Face the highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest (8848 meters) , along with several other of the world’s highest peaks. Feel the thrill of high Himalayan trekking as you climb to altitudes that are not suitable for permanent life to exist. The lunar-like landscape will blow you away, particularly from Kala Patthar (5545 meters) – the absolute best view of Everest that exists.

The trail is often listed as one of the top treks in the world not only for the awe-inspiring landscapes but also for the rich culture that lies within and along the trail. The Sherpa people are known for their incredible ability to withstand high altitudes and for their unprecedented hospitality. There are monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls, and chortens scattered along the trail, adding a lot of cultural value to the adventure.

  • Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, is one of the go-to trails in Nepal. It’s accessible, exciting, not too difficult, and offers incredible mountain views. The Annapurna region is home to some of the highest mountains in the world – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to share their presence! Enjoy lush forests, charming Gurung, Magar, and other ethnic villages, all while admiring fantastic mountain vistas.

The first few days of the journey are actually the toughest, as you traverse the steep ascents and descents from valley to valley, sometimes along steep stone staircases. However, if you take time to rest and appreciate the scenery along the way, it is not too difficult. Plus, the lush rhododendron and bamboo forests and exciting suspension bridge distract you from the strenuous climb.

Kedarkantha Trekking Itinerary

Day 1 dehradun to sankri (1,920 m): 187 km drive in 8 hours.

winter trek for beginners

The drive from Dehradun to Sankri takes you through picturesque towns and villages like Mussoorie, Nowgaon, Purola, and Mori. The route is scenic and  takes you through a dense pine forest, filling the air with the sweet aroma of pines. After driving through the forests, you’ll reach Mori, where the Tons River joins you on the route. The Tons River is the biggest tributary of Yamuna and is well-known for rafting activities. The 190 km long drive typically takes 8-9 hours to complete, so it’s advisable to start early to reach Sankri by evening. You’ll spend the night at a guesthouse before starting your hike the next day.

Day 2 Sankri to Juda Ka Talab (2,774 m): 4 km trek in 3 to 4 hours

winter trek for beginners

We start our trek towards Juda Ka Talab early in the morning after breakfast from Sankri. The trek is an eventful one as we pass through local villages, such as Saud, and encounter kids heading to school and women starting their daily chores. The trail takes us through a dense pine forest, which gradually steepens until we reach a ridge. After walking on the ridge for a while, the trail evens out and widens. The thick forest provides a cool environment, shielding us from the sun’s heat. Finally, we reach the famous Juda Ka Talab, a small lake adorned with three floating landmasses. We camp by the lake, savoring a starry dinner.

Day 3 Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (3,429 m): 4 km in 3 hours

winter trek for beginners

From Juda Ka Talab, the trail leads deeper into dense pine forests until reaching a meadow with shepherd’s huts. Climbing further for another thousand feet, trekkers will finally reach the Kedarkantha base camp, taking around 2-3 hours to complete. The trail from Juda Ka Talab to the base camp is incredibly stunning, providing an ideal setting for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Despite being a bit colder due to the lack of insulation, the base camp offers panoramic views of the famous peaks of Uttarakhand, making it an ideal spot for camping.

Day 4 Kedarkantha base camp to Kedarkantha Summit (3,810 m) and back to Hargaon (2,713 m): 8 km in 5-6 hours

winter trek for beginners

Day 4 is the day you’ve been waiting for! The trek to the summit from the base camp is not long, and upon reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded with a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of the Uttarakhand peaks, the Chaainsheel Pass, and the Kailash ranges of Himachal. You can even see the Har Ki Dun valley below. The Kedarkantha summit is marked by an arrangement of stones with a Trishul pointing to the sky. Legend has it that the peak was meant to be the original Kedarnath temple, but Lord Shiva, who was disguised as a cow hiding from the Pandavas, was disturbed during meditation by the villagers. The interruption made him change his location to the present Kedarnath temple.

After spending time on the summit, we hike back to the base camp and head towards Hargaon (2 km trail) post-lunch. Hargaon is a large camping area en route to Sankri, where we will spend the night before bidding farewell to this beautiful place.

Day 5 Hargaon to Sankri: 4 km trek in 2 to 3 hours

Today is the final day of our trek and we will descend from Kedarkantha to Sankri, which is a 4 km trek taking 2-3 hours. Once we reach Sankri, you can take the rest of the day to explore the charming village and nearby villages like Gangad and Osla, which are known for their warm hospitality and traditional Pahari culture. Sankri is also the last road head to the Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary.

Day 6 Sankri to Dehradun: 187 km drive in 7 to 8 hours

winter trek for beginners

Going back home is always a bittersweet moment, but the journey is made easier by taking the same picturesque road back to Dehradun. As we leave behind the dense pine forests and descend towards the city, the landscape slowly changes and opens up into wider roads. Finally, we arrive in the bustling city, bidding farewell to the serene mountains and valleys of Uttarakhand.

FAQ's about Kedarkantha Trek

What is the best time for kedarkantha trek.

The best time to visit Kedarkantha:-

The Kedarkantha trek is feasible for most of the year, except during peak monsoon season. Although there may be temporary halts due to heavy snowfall for 2-3 days on average during late December or early January. The trek can still be attempted during the peak winter season, from December to mid-February, when the snowfall is at its highest. The Kearkantha trek best time is from January to March. The Juda Ka Talab Lake freezes over during this period, creating a surreal experience for trekkers. However, campsites can be extremely cold during this time, and the number of trekkers starts to decrease from the second week of January. For a more solitary experience, plan your trek in late January or February for less crowded trails with ongoing snowfall.

The trek is equally beautiful in the summer months of May and June, and in September when the flora is in full bloom. You can also combine the Kedarkantha trek with the Phulara Ridge trek for a unique and unforgettable experience during the summer season.
