ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. March 2019 saw the release of "Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan", a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums "Escape" and "Frontiers" in their entirety. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

The Real Reason Steve Perry Left Journey

Journey waves to New Jersey crowd.

For years, Journey singer Steve Perry used to wear a necklace of a gold musical eighth-note. In 2018, he explained to Rolling Stone it was a gift he received from his mom when he was 12 years old.

"She always believed in me. I wore it for years and years, but hung it up in May of 1998, just after the band and I legally split and I had a complete contractual release from all my obligations to the band and label."

Perry fronted Journey to its greatest commercial success in the '80s, catapulting the band to arena rock stardom through the likes of "Open Arms" and "Don't Stop Believin'." However , by 1987, even with the triumph of Raised by Radio tour, the band was greatly fractured and went on hiatus for nearly ten years.

As time heals all wounds, Perry reunited in the mid-90s with bandmates Jonathan Cain, Ross Valory, and Steve Smith. Now under the management of Irving Azoff, Journey released Trial by Fire. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the album platinum and the Recording Academy nominated one of its hit singles, "When You Love a Woman," for a Grammy.

Through pain, Steve Perry came back to music

Just before tour arrangements could be made, Perry collapsed while on a hike. He learned he needed hip surgery due to a degenerative bone condition. The band could not wait for Perry to heal, and so he was replaced by Steve Augeri and later Arnel Pineda .

For years, Perry's surgery explained his reason for officially leaving Journey. But in 2018, he made a revelation. Ahead of the release of his solo album Traces , Perry admitted his actual motive.

"The truth is, that I thought music had run its course in my heart," Perry said. "I had to be honest with myself, and in my heart, I knew I just wasn't feeling it anymore."

Perry , in soul and spirit, was tired. But like any true rockstar, he could not be away from the limelight too long. Traces allowed Perry to find music again. In a promise to his late girlfriend Kellie Nash, who died in 2012 from breast cancer, this was the moment he stopped isolating himself from the world.

"I found myself with not only just a broken heart but an open heart," Perry told Billboard . "And from that came rock and roll."

Fordson High seniors come together for prom after journey that began during pandemic

Fordson High School senior MohamedAli Bazzi lifts and twirls his prom date Narmeen Dakouche as they share a slow dance while other seniors line the dance floor after they were announced the king and queen during their senior prom held at the Bellagio Banquet And Conference Center in Dearborn Heights on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.

For seniors at Fordson High School, prom was more than a chance to step out in stylish colorful suits and dresses. It was a chance to come together.

These students started high school in the fall of 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. They helped each other deal with life, inside and outside school. And now, they're ready to celebrate.

“We didn't have a freshman year, which messed up our relationships we could have built with upperclassman,” said senior class president Lena Dabaja.

During the pandemic, these students learned how quickly life can take a turn. So Dabaja and her classmates put on over 20 fundraisers to help make this year’s prom a Hollywood experience for all.

“We all stood by each other and helped one another,” she said. “We're really like family. I don't think there's ever been a Fordson class that loves and supports each other the way we do.”

Some seniors' parents are recent immigrants, and prom wasn't part of their tradition, or something they'd even necessarily heard of.

Like senior Hilal Baalbaki, the first from his family to attend a prom, and excited to have the opportunity.

But after he was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin lymphoma in January 2024, Baalbaki knew his chances of attending any event his senior year were low.

“I thank God for everything he’s blessed me with, and all he’s given me to be here and to celebrate with my friends,” he said.

Baalbaki says he missed a large portion of his high school experience, not only battling cancer, but also working toward his future while taking college courses through Henry Ford College.

He had to learn to walk again after being immobilized in the hospital for a month, but now, after going through treatments for cancer, he has 80% fewer tumors in his body — although his doctors told him to social distance due to his weakened immune system. “I was very happy at the fact that I was able to experience at least part of it,” he said about the culmination of his high school years. “It’s important to enjoy your last years of school, because it’s a big achievement.”

“It’s a sad moment. I cry,” said Manal Hammoud, a parent/community liaison and senior class adviser for the school. “It’s our last moment together.”

Hammoud started working at Fordson during the graduating class' freshman year, witnessing their four-year journey. On prom night, her face lit up, watching the students from the stage.

“I watch them in awe. It's good to see them take that moment, that they can have and cherish forever,” she said.

As the night carried on, students showed their appreciation for Hammoud and other faculty members, inviting them to take part in the high-energy celebration, dancing to a mixture of hit songs and traditional music. “At night, when I have to shut it down, that's the worst part," said Hammoud.

Soon, these students' lives will change as they head off in different directions, but on prom night, they enjoyed every last minute together as a group. “I've always dreamt of prom. It's the end of a chapter, and now we're opening up a new chapter, and it's something I'm so excited for,” senior Nour Choucair said. “We're all going to move on to bigger and better things, so we'll see what happens.”

Journey Lead Singers In Order: History and Band Members

From their humble beginnings to their meteoric rise to fame, Journey has mesmerized audiences worldwide with their unique sound and timeless hits. Join us on a journey through time as we explore the remarkable story of this legendary band.

Formation of the Band

Journey was formed in 1973 in San Francisco, California, bringing together a group of highly talented musicians. The founding members included Neal Schon, Gregg Rolie, Ross Valory, Aynsley Dunbar, and George Tickner. With their combined musical prowess and creative vision, they set out to create something extraordinary.

Early Years and Musical Style

During their early years, Journey experimented with a fusion of rock, jazz, and progressive influences, creating a distinctive sound that set them apart from their contemporaries. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1975, showcased their musical versatility and marked the beginning of their incredible journey.

Evolution and Breakthrough Success

In 1977, Journey underwent a significant change that would forever shape its destiny. Steve Perry joined the band as their lead vocalist, injecting new energy and unparalleled vocal range into their music. This lineup change proved to be a turning point for Journey, leading to a series of chart-topping albums and unforgettable songs.

Chart-topping albums and Hit Singles

Journey’s breakthrough came in 1978 with the release of their album “Infinity,” which became a massive success. The album spawned the hit singles “Wheel in the Sky” and “Lights,” propelling Journey into the mainstream spotlight. They continued their winning streak with subsequent albums, including “Evolution” (1979) and “Departure” (1980), which produced hits like “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” and “Any Way You Want It.”

The Iconic Album: “Escape”

In 1981, Journey released their most iconic album to date, “Escape.” This album elevated their status as rock superstars and solidified their place in music history. Featuring the mega-hits “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” and “Who’s Crying Now,” “Escape” became an instant classic, captivating audiences with its emotionally charged lyrics and powerful melodies.

The Power Ballad Era

Journey’s success continued into the mid-1980s, defined by the rise of power ballads that struck a chord with fans worldwide. Songs like “Faithfully,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” and “Send Her My Love” showcased the band’s ability to create heartfelt and anthemic ballads that resonated deeply with listeners.

A Change in Direction

As the 1990s approached, Journey faced challenges and underwent significant lineup changes. Steve Perry departed from the band in 1987, leading to a period of transition as they searched for a new lead vocalist. Despite these challenges, Journey remained resilient and continued to produce music that captivated its loyal fan base.

Journey’s Enduring Legacy

Although the band’s popularity waned in the late 1990s, their music never faded from the hearts of their dedicated fans. Journey’s timeless classics continue to resonate with audiences of all ages, thanks to their emotional depth, infectious melodies, and inspiring lyrics. The Original Journey: Gregg Rolie’s Era

Gregg Rolie

Gregg Rolie, a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, served as the original lead singer of Journey. He began his musical career as a co-founder and lead vocalist of Santana before joining forces with Neal Schon to form Journey. Rolie’s soulful voice and exceptional skills as a keyboardist and harmonicist contributed to the band’s early success. He showcased his talent on albums like “Journey,” “Look into the Future,” and “Next.” However, Rolie transitioned to co-lead vocals when Steve Perry joined the band in 1977.

102-year-old WWII vet from New York dies while traveling to D-Day ceremony in France

Robert Persichitti salutes

A 102-year-old World War II Navy veteran from New York died while traveling to France to take part in a ceremony to honor the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion that turned the tide of the war toward Allied victory.

Robert Persichitti was traveling to Normandy by ship with a veterans group, headed to the site of the historic June 6, 1944, war milestone.

On the ship, he suffered a medical episode and was airlifted to a hospital in Germany, where he died, Richard Stewart, the president of veteran organization Honor Flight Rochester, told NBC News on Thursday.

Stewart said he received the call informing him of Persichitti’s death on Friday — news no one expected as “he was active, sharp as a tack, right up [to the end].”

“His health was age appropriately very good up to 102. He had some heart problems, but he checked with his doctor, who said, ‘Absolutely go on the trip,’” Stewart said. “He passed away peacefully, he was around people.”

“The doctor found some Frank Sinatra music, which was his favorite,” Stewart added.

Persichitti, of Fairport, New York, was described as a “humble” man who “had a great life.”

His vibrant, centurylong journey began with his childhood in the Allegheny Mountains outside of Pittsburgh. He lived through the Great Depression, joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and when World War II broke out he enlisted in the Navy, spending a year in New York City attending radio school and learning Morse code.

He spent 15 months at sea assigned to the command ship USS Eldorado in the Pacific as a junior radio operator through the end of the war, serving in Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Guam, Stewart said.

He witnessed the historic moment Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945 — which was captured by photographer Joe Rosenthal and became one of the most iconic images of the war, Stars and Stripes reported.

He returned to Mount Suribachi in 2019 as part of a veterans program with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, telling a Stars and Stripes reporter at the time, “When I got on the island today, I just broke down.”

Persichitti was named to the New York state Senate’s Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020.

After the war, he settled in Rochester, New York, where he spent 40 years as a shop teacher with the Rochester City School District, teaching carpentry and other technical skills to students, and where he joined Honor Flight Rochester, which takes veterans to visit D.C. memorials.

In 2015, he published the autobiography “Building an American Life.”

He also regularly visited students in Pittsford, New York, near Rochester, to speak about World War II. In April, the Pittsford Central School District shared photos of students celebrating Persichitti’s 102nd birthday.

Persichitti was an active part of Honor Flight Rochester, and most recently attended events in April and May, shaking the hands of hundreds of veterans.

“When Bob said he was going to be someplace to do an event to help spread the word with Honor Flight, he was there, he’d be in his orange shirt. He was a great volunteer for us,” Stewart said. “I think we all had every intention that if he got back from his Normandy trip on Father’s Day, he would have been there in June, shaking hands.”

Stewart noted that Persichitti’s wife had preceded him in death and he had no children.

Tio's Tacos, a 30-Year Journey of Authentic Mexican Cuisine and Recycled Art

Please try again

year up journey

If you drive through downtown Riverside, you might spot a huge orange butterfly hanging off the side of a building, an airplane parked on its roof and two giants made from recycled aluminum cans.

Inside, you’ll spot mariachi musicians forged in metal and decorated with bottle caps. This is Tio’s Tacos. It’s not just a Mexican restaurant; it’s a sculpture garden and one immigrant entrepreneur’s labor of love.

Owner Martín Sanchez has spent more than 30 years developing authentic Mexican food inspired by frequent visits to his home country. And along the way, he’s transformed his one-acre taquería into a showcase for hundreds of works of art — all recycled from what most people call “garbage.”

“I saw an opportunity in the garbage, in recycling,” Sanchez said. “I don’t have money to buy materials, but I have bottles. I have cans. I have what the restaurant throws away.”

year up journey

Sanchez’s love for his hometown of Sahuayo, in the Mexican state of Michoacánis, is reflected in many of his pieces.

“Here we have ‘The Dance of the Old Men,’” Martín said as he pointed to a statue of traditional folk dancers in his back patio. “I always wanted to create different spaces. If you notice here, this dining area represents what my town is about.”

He said his art also represents a journey to heal a childlike wonder that was sacrificed a long time ago. Sanchez said it’s a sacrifice many immigrants face due to the pressure to provide for their families.

As a young boy, Sanchez loved to create toys made from scrap metal he found lying around. But after his father passed away, Sanchez had to work to contribute to the family’s finances.

year up journey

Years later, in 1984, at 16 years old, he immigrated to the United States and sold oranges on the side of the road in East Los Angeles. After some time, he opened a hot dog and taco cart business.

“During the day, I’d sell hot dogs, and at night, I’d transform the cart to sell tacos,” Sanchez said. “And that’s how Tio’s Tacos was born.”

Sanchez saved money for six years to buy the land where Tio’s Tacos stands today. Yet, as he was growing his business, he felt a pressure inside him that needed to be released.

year up journey

“I released the boy that I’d hindered, that I had to freeze in order to become a responsible adult as a kid,” Martín said. “Then, when I reached this point as an adult, I let that boy out, and that’s when the art began.”

He started collecting garbage from his restaurant and neatly separated the recyclable materials into different piles for upcoming projects he envisioned in his head. Over time, the plot of land behind his restaurant became filled with trash, and it became extremely noticeable. It reached the point where his family chastised him for the mounting garbage near his restaurant.

“I understood the sentiment from the people, from those around me,” Sanchez said. “But I saw the trash’s potential.”

year up journey

Eventually, his trash piles would also catch the attention of the local government. He said he received complaints from the city. But as they saw this public eye-sore transform into a work of art, the complaints slowed.

“They must have said, ‘We have to leave this crazy guy alone and see how far he gets,’” Sanchez said. “Nowadays, thank God, I have the support of the city. They support me, they congratulate me. I am what they call a ‘landmark’ here.”

Sanchez also has the support of the local arts community in Riverside. His work has been featured at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art and Culture , which is only a couple of blocks away from the restaurant.

year up journey

Maria Esther Fernandez, the museum’s artistic director, said Tio’s Tacos makes her feel at home and said the art uniquely reflects the city’s culture.

“He’s creating a place here in Riverside, and it’s a destination,” Fernandez said. “It’s a place where people go and see themselves, see their family, their history, their memories.”

Sanchez’s three daughters also consider Tio’s Tacos, a vital part of the Riverside community and are slowly inheriting the business. Estephanie, the oldest, said she plans to preserve the art and continue growing the restaurant.

“We’ve always said that the restaurant is something living and breathing. It moves and is constantly changing,” Estephanie said. “Equally important is that the community, the families, feel comfortable here and relax.”

Martín Sanchez said he’s happy to hand the business over to his daughters and is excited to see where they take it. He said it gives him more time to create art.

“I used to dream like a boy, and I continue to dream like a boy and play like a boy,” Sanchez said. “That’s why every time I do a project, I imagine that I’m playing, and that’s the key to success to achieve something.”

Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

David Fry’s journey from PTBNL to driving force behind the Guardians’ 40-20 start

CLEVELAND — He’s the only human being with a higher OPS than Aaron Judge . No one reaches base with more frequency. And unless you have tracked the wild ride of the 2024 Cleveland Guardians or you watched him star at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., or you work in the Milwaukee Brewers’ front office, you’re probably not familiar with David Fry .

He’s two years removed from being a Player To Be Named Later. He’s two months removed from the epiphany that altered the course of his season, and perhaps his career.

He’s evolved from a utility player clawing for an Opening Day roster spot to a linchpin in a lineup that has launched the 40-20 Guardians into the conversation for baseball’s best story.

How well are things going for Fry? He approached the plate with the bases loaded and the score tied in the seventh inning Tuesday. He pounded a pitch into the infield grass. Three runs scored.

“When you’re hot, you’re hot,” Guardians hitting coach Chris Valaika said.

Always run out a grounder! The hustle of Josh Naylor into second base and David Fry down the first-base line allows the @CleGuardians to score three runs on a Royals error in the bottom of the seventh inning. #ForTheLand pic.twitter.com/WckR5Nlat5 — Bally Sports Cleveland (@BallySportsCLE) June 5, 2024

Ahead of each series, Cleveland ’s three catchers — Fry, Bo Naylor and Austin Hedges — complete deep dives on every opposing hitter. They scribble scouting reports into their notebooks, with pitch types and sequences to prioritize and hot zones to avoid.

During an early-season trip, it dawned on Fry: Why not complete a deep dive on a hitter he knows pretty well? Why not evaluate himself?

“I was like, ‘Huh. I hit fastballs up,’” he said. “‘Maybe I should do that.’”

Of course, this is material hitting coaches collect and disperse. But Fry needed to see it for himself. And to do that, he needed more evidence. He needed more playing time. He has finally earned it, because he can’t stop pummeling baseballs. His hard-hit rate has increased. His strikeout rate has decreased. His metrics suggest this isn’t some two-month mirage. He might not finish the season with a 1.092 OPS, and since he has only recently moved into an almost-everyday role, his sample is smaller than many of the ones his colleagues have compiled. But his inputs reflect a better hitter than he’s shown in the past.

So maybe this is just a 28-year-old realizing what he can provide.

“What David is doing right now isn’t a fluke,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said.

Fry reported to Brewers minor-league camp in the middle of March 2022. His first day, as he caught a bullpen session, Milwaukee officials informed him he was being traded to Cleveland, and that this had been brewing for months.

Before the lockout after the 2021 season, the Guardians sent pitcher J.C. Mejía to the Brewers for a player to be named later. Cleveland targeted Fry as the return, but Fry was eligible to be selected in the Rule 5 draft — if there was a Rule 5 draft. Once the 99-day lockout ceased, the league opted to scrap the Rule 5 draft, so the Guardians could finalize the swap: Mejía for Fry.

Mejía has since received 80- and 162-game bans for failed performance-enhancing drug tests. Fry, meanwhile, has been the anonymous, ever-lurking threat behind José Ramírez and Josh Naylor in Vogt’s lineup. When an opposing team summons a lefty to face Naylor, Fry and his 1.399 OPS against southpaws are waiting in the on-deck circle.

Fry is aware of the numbers. He spots them every time he walks toward the batter’s box. He acknowledges it’s impossible not to peer at the scoreboard.

“It’s so massive,” he said, laughing.

Not a hot take: David Fry is an All-Star. #ForTheLand pic.twitter.com/taQQdwLN5N — Cleveland Guardians (@CleGuardians) June 1, 2024

He tries his damnedest not to think about how much an 0-for-2 dropped his batting average as he strolls to the plate a third time in a game. That line of thinking plagued him far worse last season when his playing time was limited. He’d ride the bench for a week or more, and then when his name surfaced in a starting lineup, he felt like his career was at stake.

“(It was), ‘Wow, if I don’t go 3-for-4, I’m not going to play,’” he said. “Now, if I have a bad game, I know Vogt is going to find a way to get me back in the lineup. There’s not so much pressure on myself, like, ‘You have to play well today.’ No, just prepare and whatever the results are, the results are.”

It’s a lot easier to work him into the lineup when he can bounce all around the diamond, too. Fry has started eight games at catcher, eight games at first base and 11 games in the outfield. He’s been a godsend for Vogt when the rookie manager is plotting late-game switches and pinch-hitting decisions. Granted, any manager would prioritize playing time for a guy with a .342/.479/.613 slash line. There’s a reason Vogt has referred to Fry as the heart and soul of the club.

“He’s taking his walks. He’s impacting the ball,” Valaika said. “Those are ingredients we want in the lineup every day.”

A driving factor behind Fry’s surge? His selectiveness. He ranks in the 91st percentile in chase rate. He has essentially cut it in half from where it stood last year and in the minors. He has drawn nearly as many walks as strikeouts this season, and his walk rate ranks among the best in the league. He’s forcing pitchers to throw him pitches in his preferred locations, pitches he knows he can handle.

Fry acknowledged “it’s so hard to get better at not swinging at balls,” and for that, Valaika praised “his stubbornness to stick with that plan.”

“You’ll see him maybe look silly on one pitch,” Valaika said, “but then it won’t happen twice. He’s making those in-at-bat adjustments.”

It’s convenient to stick with a plan when it’s working. Fry has served as an example of why the Guardians refuse to predict what an inexperienced player might become. Any projection comes with a ceiling. And when confidence meets opportunity, who knows what a player can accomplish? Sometimes a player to be named later blossoms into a player you can’t do without.

“Ride those hot streaks as long as you can,” Valaika said. “You know they don’t last forever. But the way he’s approaching it, it might not be as hot as it is, but we’re not going to see a drop-off in production.”
