Barton 1792 Distillery To Close To Public Tours
- by Nino Kilgore-Marchetti
- April 7, 2022
American whiskey company Sazerac is known for two distillery operations in Kentucky. One is, of course, Buffalo Trace and its large range of brands. The other is Barton 1792 , a staple of the Kentucky bourbon scene that’s offered enhanced access to visitors since its visitor center opened back in 2011 .
Now, in a move announced on social media today , Barton 1792 is closing its distillery doors to the public, ending public tours effective June 30th of this year. This is being done, according to distillery officials, because “after careful review of our brand needs, plant capacity, safety, and practicality we have made the decision to no longer offer public tours.”
“Our love for the 1792 Bourbon brand and Barton family brands is stronger than ever, and it’s because we have such confidence in the potential of the portfolio that we are adjusting our strategy at Barton 1792 Distillery to focus more acutely on meeting increasing demand for our products, concentrating the distillery on what it does best: producing the world’s best whiskey,” it was noted as well in a follow up prepared statement.
For those who’ve already booked a tour or visit prior to June 30, 2022, it will happen as planned. It should also be noted the gift shop will be closing at the end of June as well.
For those unfamiliar with Barton 1792 , it is “part of Barton Brands. Barton Brands has facilities in Bardstown, Ky., Carson, Calif., and Baltimore, Md. Barton Brands is owned by the Sazerac Company, an American family-owned company based in New Orleans, La. Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully-operating Distillery in the ‘Bourbon Capital of the World.’
“The Distillery is located on 196 acres and includes 28 warehouses, 22 other buildings, the Morton Spring and the Tom Moore Spring. Distilling, aging and bottling fine Bourbon whiskey are hallmarks of the historic Barton 1792 Distillery. 1792 Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey is produced at Barton 1792 Distillery, and is named for the year Kentucky became a state.
“The Distillery has garnered a number of prestigious awards for its whiskies, including its 1792 Full Proof, which was named the World Whiskey of the Year for 2020.”

Tours closed. Big sign outside says tour closed to public. An old guy sits in the window of the security shack. We consider getting out to enquire, as the website shows them open. He sternly points to the sign.. can't be bothered to come out and offer a little conversation or clarification. Lousy customer service. Who hires an 80 year old plus security guard?
CLOSED FOR TOURS
First, I'll try not to repeat what several other reviews have mentioned, but I will say that Barton 1792 distillery is one of our go-to distilleries when family and friends visit from out of state. For one, it is free, and the tour is just as in-depth as the other Kentucky distilleries that require payment. Most importantly, if you're planning on doing more than two distilleries in one day, plan on getting up early, especially if you're coming from Louisville, Cincinnati, or Lexington. Furthermore, don't even think of using Uber or Lyft; if you've flown into one of the cities mentioned above, just rent a car. Since gas has risen over the last few months, it would be wise to stay in Louisville two nights and then Lexington for two nights instead of driving out further from either city, but that's my opinion for non-Kentuckians. We usually start from Lexington around 9 AM and hit Woodford Reserve, Four Roses, and Barton 1792. Sometimes, we will do Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Barton 1792. On a side note, during my recent business trip to Memphis, someone overheard that I was from Kentucky; he immediately asked me about the distilleries and the bourbon trail. He was specifically looking for Pappy Van Winkle and Blanton's bourbon distilleries. I advised him that there are brand names under different distilleries. Finally, if you're hunting for a Kentucky Bourbon Trail map, go to google and type in - bourbon trail pdf. You'll get several hits for pdf files to download.

I've been to a few distilleries during my visit to bardstown but this one was pretty good. our tour guide Laura was very informative , funny and kept the tour going very well . of course the tour is free which is unusual for most distilleries today. good small gift shop and a worthwhile stop. I wasn't too familiar with the Barton brand and product but now I am and I'm glad I went by. Glad to hear that privately owned by a wealthy louisville family that continues to reinvest back into the brand and product and the employees.
Fermenting tanks
Went there just to check out the visitor center, the visitor center and yours were closed but nothing on yelp, google or their website said that they were closed. "Opens at 10:00 am". I understand being closed but their hours of operation should change on some website.
This tour is mostly outside, so plan accordingly if you're coming during a day that is hot!!! Stand tour, we see production, ingredients, barrels. One thing that stood out here is that we got to taste moonshine! Tasting was 3-4 with a chocolate as well. No cocktail bar here, and the gift shop was small.. so nothing too hoop la, but we did get a good educational session!
Fun tour with a very knowledgeable guide. They are pumping out ALOT of bourbon here. It was cool to see the whole operation in full swing. Even got to see trucks delivering literal tons of corn. Gift shop was kinda meh.
This visit almost couldn't be bad. 1792 is a good whiskey, and, as a Sazerac owned distillery, the tour and tasting here are free. If your schedule allows, there's no reason not to pay this distillery a visit. Every tour I've done on the bourbon trail has been different. This one is on the casual end and is fairly industrial. Prepare to spend some time outside, and, ladies, this might not be the tour for delicate heels. Our tour guide told us that she was pretty new to the job, but she was obviously well trained and well informed. You get to see a lot of the process, get into a rickhouse, can try the white dog, and it's followed up by a nice tasting.

The fourth distillery stop on our tour of the Bourbon Capital of the World, Barton 1792 was a fun one. The big reason we went was to take a tour of their distillery grounds and check out where they produce and distill the whiskey, as well as black-painted rickhouses that store the barrels aging the whiskey. If you enjoy whiskey and want to know how a distillery produces it, you will want to check out Barton 1792 because they deliver. Located just outside of downtown Bardstown, Barton 1792 is recognizable from the road due to their black-painted rickhouses that store the barrels aging their whiskey. The property itself is huge to where when you do take the tour, you have to drive your car from the gift shop to the destination beyond their black gates, weaving and winding on the narrow road to a parking lot in front of one of the production plants. Producing whiskey is an enormous operation, and Barton 1792 has it mastered certainly. During our tour, we went to Warehouse H, one of the rickhouses where they age the barrels of whiskey. Hearing our guide explain the process and be up close to the barrels was neat and insightful. One of the topics of discussion was a display showcasing the different levels of a 9f charred barrel used for aging whiskey. From there, we went and peered inside the production plant that included the mash cooker and distilling areas. Seeing the endless pipes and cylinders and other containers comprising grain, corn, and rye for making the whiskey was terrific. Our tour concluded at the visitor center where we had a complimentary tasting of Very Old Barton 80 proof, 1792 Small Batch, and Barton's Bourbon Ball liqueur. I was impressed with how well the VOB 80 drank for the pricepoint that I bought a bottle of it since they don't sell it retail in Florida. Additionally, Barton's Bourbon Ball liqueur was delicious, especially when paired with the homemade chocolate bourbon balls. When I discovered that was only available on-site at the distillery for sale, I bought a bottle of that too. Overall, touring the distillery was awesome. For a whiskey connoisseur like I, it was a terrific experience.

Barton 1792 Distillery Tour (Video)

We recently visited the Barton 1792 Distillery. Like Buffalo Trace, this Sazarac owned distillery also does not charge for their tours, which is very cool. It’s a great place to visit, and although they, like the Buffalo Trace Distillery, are not technically on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the Barton 1792 Distillery Tour should definitely be included in everyone’s itinerary.
The Barton 1792 distillery has opened back up to visitors with full tours and tastings. There’s a new gift shop and tasting center just outside of the distillery grounds. The idea being that visitors can be pre-screened for COVID-19 prior to entering the distillery proper. That’s smart. Very smart. A perfect plan until we came to visit.? We have been to Barton 1792 many times so we figured we knew where we were going, and went directly to the visitor center on the distillery grounds. We were greeted by “So how did you get past the security checkpoint?”. ??♂️ Fortunately, they checked our temperature (maybe we weren’t the first to make this mistake??) and let us stay and take the tour.
The distillery
The Barton 1792 Distillery is a bit different from many of the other distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. It is purely industrial. The distillery exists to “get the job done” and that it does. They produce and bottle the 1792 bourbon line, the Very Old Barton bourbons, as well as a slew of other Sazarac products.
Check out our short video
The Barton 1792 distillery, like the Buffalo trace distillery, is owned by the Sazerac company. It was established in 1879 and is the oldest operating distillery in Bardstown Kentucky. However it was not continuously operating as it was shut down during prohibition. The distillery has a complicated history and was originally named the Tom Moore Distillery, after it’s founder, although it might not have had that name when it first opened, when it was probably the Mattingly & Moore distillery (which was prior to that the Willett and Frenke Distillery) which was located near to the current distillery site. The flagship brands produces are Very Old Barton and 1792 (formerly known as Ridgemont Reserve 1792). They are definitely worth a visit, so be sure to check them out!

BIG NEWS: Barton 1792 Distillery is CLOSING its Public Tours Permanently Soon
BARDSTOWN, KY – Big news just splashed in the Bourbon Capital of The World. Sazerac owned 1792 Barton Distillery just announced yesterday via social media that effective June 30th, 2022 , it will NO longer offer public tours.
Noted in their Facebook post,” If you’ve ALREADY booked a tour prior to June 30th, it will be honored. “
Here is the entire passage from yesterday’s FB post:
Today we’re sharing an important update regarding tour operations at Barton 1792 Distillery: after careful review of our brand needs, plant capacity, safety, and practicality we have made the decision to no longer offer public tours at the Distillery effective June 30. Instead, we’ll concentrate Barton 1792 Distillery on what it does best: producing the world’s best whiskey. If you’ve already booked a tour or visit prior to June 30, 2022, it will happen as planned.
We thank you for your support over the years and hope to welcome you to one of our other homeplaces in the future.
Can’t help to note we’re a bit sad to see this from the public view. Barton 1792 was a gritty “real” tour experience. Not the country club scene. No fancy horse farms in sight. As they noted for reasons of shutting down the public tours, just a core focus on making damn good whiskey. Hard to argue against that at the end of the day.
Now, if Buffalo Trace Distillery decided to follow suit, well, that would be a different story:)
