A fuel pressure regulator is responsible for providing a consistent fuel supply while driving. Located inside the fuel tank or elsewhere on the frame, the fuel pressure regulator monitors and controls the pressure of the fuel being supplied by the fuel pump to the engine's fuel injectors. Without a pressure regulator, the fuel pump can run constantly and over-pressurize the fuel system, leading to performance issues and fuel waste. While the fuel pump supplies a consistent fuel pressure resulting in more fuel than the engine needs, the fuel pressure regulator alters the pressure as needed to ensure the right amount of fuel is reaching the engine in varying driving conditions. Because your vehicle can not run properly without a functioning fuel pressure regulator, regulator failure could result in rough idle, black smoke or unburned fuel in the exhaust, or engine stalling. You may also notice misfires or smell fuel on your spark plugs, dipstick, or when decelerating. This may require not only fuel pressure regulator replacement, but also an oil change if excessive fuel has contaminated the oil supply. Fuel pressure regulators are not typically regular maintenance items but may require routine service as instructed in your vehicle's owners manual. If you notice any fuel system issues, it may be time to inspect or replace the regulator, fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel injectors, but be sure to complete a thorough diagnosis before beginning your repair. 2002 Safari hard starting

Recently my 2002 Safari has developed an issue starting. Normally I turn the key....let the fuel pump run a little.....then turn the key further and it starts immediately. Now I have to hold the starter for 5-10 seconds before it starts. I checked fuel pressure and found the following - 1). After 1/2 hour the pressure was at zero 2). Turned the key to let the fuel pump run (before starting) jumps to 60psi 3). Start engine (runs after 5 seconds of cranking) now at 53psi 4). Step on the gas a little and pressure momentary hits 60psi than goes back to 53. 5). Once the engine is off the psi starts dropping from 50 to 30 in about a minute. Ideas? Thanks

Yeah, that doesn't seem right with the fuel pressure. 53 PSI is kinda low for a running engine. I think it should be like 59 or 60 PSI when idling. And it shouldn't leakdown like that when you turn it off. Does it seem to be running rich? Your fuel pressure regulator might be the issue. Maybe...

Mine used to start just hit the key. I mean tap it. I switched mufflers. Now it cranks a few seconds. If I clear the computer. First few times it starts like that again. So the point is how temperamental the computers are. What your describing is lower than normal fuel pressure. It is leaking down to fast. Fuel pump getting weak. Or its check valve in the pump leaking. Or the pressure regulator for the fuel injector is getting weak. On the bright side. My friend/customers blazer I rebuild periodically because his wife like blowing up things. His does the exact same thing. It is his fuel pump. It has been like that for 2 years always starts and runs great. Just cranks a few seconds. So there is the list of hard to check things. And encouragement that it may last forever that way.  

So I'm standing outside of the van while my wife starts it - after 10 seconds it finally starts and has a strong odor of raw gas out of the tailpipe. Where is the fuel pressure regulator located? Any pictures? I believe it's the type without the vacuum line on it. I suspect it may be draining into the intake plenum when the engine is shut off. When it starts back up it runs sort of crappy for a little bit....... Or it could just be dumping gas while trying to start.........

Yup, thats it. Mine was doing that some exact thing, leaking right out. The van was hard to start, got really bad MPG, and smelled like raw fuel.  

All in all, once it starts it still runs & idles pretty good. Just noticing it now takes longer to start along with the gas smell. These look to be a real pain to work on with the limited space available.  

Yeah, if it was leaking, the van would act like it was flooding. Thats why it would be hard to start. But yes, they are a pain to work on. My 93 has a dog house, which made it alot easier to work on. Does the '02 have a dog house?

Yes, it has the mini injectors that attach to the central metering body. Each can be replaced separately; you have to get the correct injector for cylinder that needs a new one.  

Glad you got it fixed! I'm going to guess nothing's terribly robust with ethanol in gas...  

Yup. Thats EXACTLY what mine was doing. Changed the pressure regulator and it ran great after that. Glad you got it fixed! :thumbup:

Rosatom Starts Production of Rare-Earth Magnets for Wind Power Generation

TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom has started gradual localization of rare-earth magnets manufacturing for wind power plants generators. The first sets of magnets have been manufactured and shipped to the customer.

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. These technologies will be undoubtedly in demand in other areas as well,” noted Alexander Korchagin, Director General of NovaWind JSC.
