Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SE 5dr

What's the used volkswagen polo hatchback like.

The Volkswagen Polo is more about comfort than thrills, and the supple suspension provides a compliant ride in both town and on faster roads. The steering and controls are light and help make low-speed manoeuvring easy. If there is a hole in the Polo's repertoire, then it's the poor body control.

You'll need to work the smaller petrol engines hard to make decent progress, and the diesel engines can sound gruff when pushed. The GTI is a revelation compared with the standard cars, with greatly improved steering, tighter body control and more grip.

There's space for four adults inside, and the boot is a decent size and shape. Access in the three-door model isn't as bad as you'd think, although the five-door is much better for small families. Most of the cabin feels solid, although some of the materials could be better quality.

Ownership cost

What used volkswagen polo hatchback will i get for my budget, how much does it cost to run a volkswagen polo hatchback.

The Polo Bluemotion is head and shoulders above the others, with excellent economy, zero road tax and the best residual values. However, these do cost more to buy, so make sure your mileage justifies the extra outlay. Of the standard diesels, both 1.4s average around 60mpg, with the 1.9 returns 56mpg.

What Car? Buying a car frequently asked questions

What Car? has a buying service

Petrol models are best for those who do a low annual mileage, because their lower purchase price offsets the diesels' better economy. Both 1.2-litre petrols manage 48.7mpg, despite the more powerful version having 10bhp more. The 1.4 petrols aren't far behind at 44.8mpg. The GTI averages just 36.2mpg, but drive it like a hot hatch was designed to be and that will quickly drop.

Servicing costs and insurance are higher than they are for many rivals, but you can save money by using one of the many cheaper independent Volkswagen specialist garages.

Our recommendations

Which used volkswagen polo hatchback should i buy.

With eight petrol and four diesel engines to choose from, you're spoilt for choice.

The 1.2-litre petrol comes with either 59bhp or 69bhp - the second is better thanks to the extra power, although neither is fast. The 75bhp 1.4 (80bhp after '06) is eager and economical, while the rarer 85bhp 1.4 FSI offers the best combination of power and economy. Next up is the 1.4-litre Sport with 100bhp, then the 104bhp 1.6. The GTI is fastest, with a turbocharged 148bhp 1.8-litre engine, plus honed suspension and brakes.

Diesel options are simpler: there's a 69bhp or 79bhp 1.4, or a 100bhp 1.9. In '07, the ultra-frugal Bluemotion version was launched, with its 79bhp 1.4-litre diesel engine delivering 74mpg on average and CO2 emissions of just 99g/km.

The entry-level E model is sparsely equipped, but the Match has alloys, air-con, electric front windows and a CD player. SE models add nice touches including driver's seat-height adjustment, and Sport models have fog lights and lowered suspension.

2008 VW Polo BlueMotion Hits 46 MPG in Real-World Euro Test

this image is not available

LONDON— There was a time in my life when reaching the magic ton (100 mph) in the underpowered junkers of my youth was something of a holy grail. Yet recently, when the needle on one of Britain's most economical cars crept toward that speed on a quiet road near my home, I was more amazed to see 50 mpg (U.S.) flash up on the instant fuel consumption readout than to see 100 mph on the speedometer.

I must be getting old.

This epitome of frugality is Volkswagen's sensible-shoes super-mini, the Polo--a car that makes the Passat seem like a land yacht. But this Polo has a few key differences from the standard, bottom-of-the-range 1.4-liter turbodiesel model. BlueMotion, developed by the German company's special engineering department, denotes the most thermally efficient model in each of VW's model ranges.

The Polo (a notch down from the Rabbit) is a four-door hatchback capable of accommodating four consenting (but not overfed) adults in a modicum of comfort--just not for too long. We wouldn't choose this sort of conveyance to ferry a family across the U.S. from, say, Los Angeles to New York City. It's like a proper car, but much smaller. It's also expensive. The basic Polo BlueMotion 1 model costs £12,125 ($24,150) and £12,935 ($25,800) in up-market BlueMotion 2 spec, with air conditioning, remote central locking, an alarm and ritzier trim.

But it's also very high-tech, with slight aerodynamic changes to the conventional Polo shell (new grille, extended front bumper and rear wing) on top of one serious engine: VW's 79-hp, 1.4-liter three-cylinder turbodiesel, with electronically controlled, high-pressure direct fuel injection and a variable geometry turbocharger to lift mid-range torque. Bumping up fuel efficiency even more is a five-speed manual transmission with taller gear ratios on Third, Fourth and Fifth gears, plus a taller final drive. The narrow, low-rolling-resistance tires are said to be good for CO2 reductions of up to 4 g/km. The car weighs a feathery 2389 pounds—about 16 pounds lighter than the standard 1.4-litre TDI Polo.

But this Polo is far from being a stripped-out special with wooden seats: BlueMotion's specification is plush, with VW's usual quality and fine interior materials. The front seats are comfortable, but anyone over 6 ft. will find the rear ones cramped. The hatchback opens to reveal just enough room for one medium-sized suitcase, so pack light.

The little engine makes a terrific clatter when starting, and when you press the throttle the exhaust-gas recirculation seems like the engineering equivalent of breathing into a grocery bag as the valves open and shut. Once above 20 mph, though, the Polo thrums lustily—albeit with a semi-sluggish performance return at 12.8 seconds for a 0-62 time a top speed 109 mph. The BlueMotion's 12-gallon fuel tank offers a theoretical range of more than 700 miles.

On the road, the gearing is very tall, so you do find some large gaps between ratios. At times, you need to hold on to the lower gears for longer than entirely comfortable. And for many routes, Fourth gear is a more practical proposition than top. And, yes, the low rolling resistance tires give a harsh ride with limited grip. But this also means those skinny tires can be a lot of fun for anyone who can handle a slide--not so fun if you're a learner or cautious driver.

For all that, the Polo BlueMotion imparts a special feeling of engineering integrity and technical virtuosity from VW. In combined European consumption testing, the Polo delivered a claimed 61.8 mpg--and that's no idle boast. We averaged 45.72 mpg on a mix of cold starts and fast runs in freezing temperatures, rain and urban crawls. With me driving (I don't hang about), that's very impressive--and it makes something of a mockery out of the Toyota Prius, which last year delivered just 36.8 mpg in similar conditions and routes with my lead foot behind it.

The Bottom Line

Still, the BlueMotion is a result of some very political tinkering with the rules over what we drive over here across the pond. In Europe, automakers must meet a mandate for corporate average emissions of 120 g/km by 2012, and cars like this 99 g/km Polo should allow VW to keep building vehicles like the mighty Touareg SUV or sleek Passat CC. There are also carbon-based restrictions and taxes springing up all over Europe. In Britain, there are heavy incentives to buy, say, a Polo--including an annual car tax waiver worth about £400 ($800) against a medium-sized SUV, rising to £950 ($1,850) in 2009. There are also suggestions that sub-100-g/km cars like the Polo BlueMotion could get a waiver for city taxes such as London's congestion charge, as well as resident parking charges that penalize cars with large-capacity engines.

The fuel-saving argument is less clear cut, even from over here with diesel prices at about £4.57 ($9.15) per gallon. If you drive like an average owner (covering 8000 miles a year) there are potential savings of about £108 ($216) per year in gas costs over the next most frugal Polo model.

By Glen Waddington

The big news for the new VW Polo was the new 1.2 TSI, with a turbo to push its tiny four-pot to 104bhp. But that’s the range-topper. Volkswagen expects most buyers to opt for the piddling 59bhp naturally aspirated 1.2, closely followed by this better-nourished 84bhp 1.4. In five-door SE spec, the latter is yours for £12,450 – which will only buy you a Fiesta on steel wheels. Does that mean the Polo can shoot to the top of the class?

So, this new VW Polo’s a bargain then?

Well, the equivalent Skoda Fabia falls shy of the £11k mark, which perhaps means that’s the real bargain. However, while the Skoda feels very grown-up, it’s based on the group’s outgoing small-car platform and it can’t match the VW for refinement and finish. The new Polo feels every inch like a shrunken Golf.

The equipment list isn’t bad (air-con, alloys, four electric windows) and all the interior’s upper surfaces are beautifully finished and complimented by chrome highlights for the switchgear and air vents. It’s an extremely classy car that feels upmarket. But it’ll need to be a dynamic storm to wipe out all the competition.

How does it drive?

Not so much a dynamic storm as the calm that ensues. Merely pulling away from a parking space is enough to convince you that this is one extremely smooth, quiet and comfortable supermini. The ride is plush and pliant, the suspension hushed in its actions and the engine is velvety. There’s a decent supply of torque from the 1.4 too, so you don’t need to pile on the revs for progress that’s brisk enough for most circumstances. Keeps the decorum intact.

What if I do pile on the revs?

Give this Polo the full whack on a twisting B-road and the plot begins to unravel, but only slightly. The engine gets coarse and boomy as it winds round the clock, and the ride – gorgeously supple around town – suddenly displays a lack of damping by getting out of control over humps and depressions. In short, the serenity disappears.

You have to be in a tearing hurry for that. VW’s target market is probably rather more demure in its driving, and will be far more interested in the Polo’s immaculate interior, its light controls, logical, high-quality switchgear and easy gearshift. If you’re more into handling, then you’ll be after a Fiesta instead.

The Polo’s a good motorway cruiser, maintaining decent silence and loping along beautifully. And you can have fun in its elsewhere, because it’s quick to change direction and agile with it – just keep it below seven-tenths if the road surface gets lively.

Could it be my only car?

The new Polo has grown a couple of inches over the old, like so many superminis. The result? A competitively spacious car but not a class leader. The boot looks a bit small at first because it has a false floor (to match the level of dropped seatbacks for a through load), and you’ll struggle to get a quartet of six-footers comfortable in the cabin. But it’s practical enough for young families who don’t regularly carry massive loads, and brisk and quiet enough so that they can tackle even long journeys without wishing they’d bought a Golf. Classy enough for you to park it anywhere, too.

If any car can challenge the Ford Fiesta for class leadership, this is it. And this spec shows the Polo in an especially positive light: the engine suits the rest of the car (so much better than the coarse and lurchy 1.6 diesel) and it’s not too expensive.

Yet the roundness of those scores is a double-edged sword: solid fours in every category but utterly outstanding in none. This is a great little car, tops for refinement and finish, the class act if acting classy is what you’re after. But the Fiesta has more zing, a bit more character, mainly because it’s a more entertaining drive. Yet an equivalent Fiesta costs a good grand more – bonkers but true. Remember the battle between the Golf Mk4 and the original Ford Focus? It’s being repeated here. I’d sooner drive the Ford, but I’d rather own the VW.
