Gunman and 8 Hostages Dead in the Philippines

2010 tour bus

By Carlos H. Conde

  • Aug. 23, 2010

MANILA —A former police officer took a busload of tourists hostage in downtown Manila on Monday morning, opening a 12-hour standoff that was broadcast live on television, including its end as police commandos stormed the bus before a watching crowd.

Eight tourists, all from Hong Kong, were killed, along with the hostage-taker. He was identified as Rolando Mendoza, a 55-year-old officer who had been accused of robbery and extortion and was fired last year.

There were indications that Mr. Mendoza, who news reports said was armed with an M-16 assault rifle, was watching the live news broadcasts of the scene on a monitor inside the bus as it sat for hours, curtains drawn, at a major public plaza.

Throughout the day, the gunman wrote his demands for the return of his job and benefits on cardboard and pasted them on the windshield of the bus. One message read, “Big mistake to correct a big wrong decision.”

Late in the afternoon, he posted a message saying, “Media now,” apparently telling journalists to come to him. But by then the police prevented reporters from even getting near the bus.

At one point, the gunman’s brother complained to reporters near the scene that the police were threatening him; the cameras then showed him being detained by officers and shoved into a police car, his relatives wailing behind him. Shortly after, shots were heard from inside the bus.

Gunfire also broke out when the police tried to break the windshield and glass windows of the bus with sledgehammers. A bystander was hit in the leg by one of the bullets.

Mr. Mendoza gave an interview to Radio Mindanao Network, a Manila station, in which he admitted shooting two of the hostages and threatened to kill more.

“I shot two Chinese,” he told the station in Tagalog. “I will finish them all if they do not stop.”

The commandos struck after the bus driver jumped through a window and ran from the bus screaming, “Everybody is dead!”

The cameras captured the commandos, armed with rifles, surrounding the bus and opening an emergency exit, as emergency vehicles converged at the scene in heavy rain.

Police officers threw tear gas inside the bus, apparently forcing Mr. Mendoza to go near the bus’s main door, which they had torn down. Shots were heard and in a split second the body of a man — presumably Mr. Mendoza — was seen slumped by the door.

Several of the unharmed hostages, visibly shaken and some crying, were taken off the bus through the emergency exit.

President Benigno Aquino, in a news briefing around midnight, said Mr. Mendoza might have gained some advantage from the coverage. “To a certain extent, he may have had a bird’s eye view of the developments, which might not have helped,” the president said.

The case captivated — and angered — Filipinos, with many blaming the news coverage for the disastrous end.

The chief executive of Hong Kong, Donald Tsang, called the case a “major tragedy,” and criticized the Filipino authorities.

“The way it was handled, particularly the outcome, I find is disappointing,” Mr. Tsang said at a news conference in Hong Kong, Reuters reported.

But Mr. Aquino defended the actions of the authorities: “The idea was to let the ground commanders who are the experts in this field handle the operation with minimal interference from people who are less expert.”

Gunman in the philippines ends standoff by killing 8, wounding 7.

  • NEW: Hong Kong urges no trips to Philippines after killings
  • Manila police say the gunman was a disgruntled ex-cop
  • China condemned the "atrocious behavior of the criminal"
  • The gunman's brother has been accused of conspiring with him

Hong Kong, China (CNN) -- Hong Kong urged its residents to cut short or cancel planned trips to the Philippines on Tuesday in the aftermath of a bloodbath that left eight dead on a Manila tour bus.

Hong Kong's regional government issued its highest level of travel warnings in the aftermath of the killings, urging all residents to avoid traveling to the Philippines.

"Those already there should attend to their personal safety and stay alert," the advisory read. Tour groups were urged to return "as soon as possible," while other groups scheduled to visit were urged to cancel their trips.

Manila police said Rolando Mendoza, a former police officer upset at having lost his job, took hostage a busload of tourists from Hong Kong Monday and killed eight of them before being shot dead. One passenger was critically wounded and six others hospitalized with less serious injuries after the 10-hour standoff erupted into gunfire, Donald Tsang, the chief executive of Hong Kong's semi-autonomous government, told reporters.

And in Beijing, the Chinese government said Tuesday it "severely condemns the atrocious behavior of the criminal" and expressed its "deep sorrow" and "sincerely condolences" to the families of the victims.

"The Chinese government has already decided to send working teams to the Philippines and we will keep close contact with both the Philippine as well as Hong Kong government, putting our best effort into rescuing the injured parties in the aftermath," China's Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement on the killings. China has asked the Philippine government "to take concrete action to secure [and] guarantee the protection and safety of Chinese lives and wealth."

The incident began at 10 a.m. Monday (10 p.m. ET Sunday), when Mendoza -- wearing a uniform and carrying a rifle -- flagged down the tourist bus and asked for a ride, police spokesman Erwin Margarejo told reporters.

A tour guide for Hong Thai Travel tried to stop him from boarding the bus, the company's general manager told reporters.

"The gunman said he wanted to have a free lift. Then the tour guide stopped him," General Manager Susanna Lau said. "Eventually, the gunman got on the coach and then asked the driver to lock the door."

Lau said the gunman did not threaten people on the bus.

Twenty-five people, including 22 foreigners, were on the bus when Mendoza boarded it, Manila District Police Chief Rodolfo Magtibay said.

Mendoza wrote his demand that he get his job back on a board and displayed it in the bus windshield.

Inside, the hostages appeared calm but confused, Margarejo said.

Police cordoned off the area around the bus as they tried to negotiate, and sharpshooters were stationed nearby. Food was delivered to the hostages on board.

Manila police official Leocadio Santiago told CNN that Mendoza's family members spoke with him early in the standoff and that he appeared "very reasonable and very psychologically stable."

The gunman released nine of the hostages, including a mother and her three children, a man with diabetes, and two photographers. The bus driver also escaped.

Around 2 p.m., the Philippine news channel ANC showed images of signs posted on the bus windshield saying, "Big deal will start after 3 p.m. today" and "3 p.m. today dead lock."

But two hours later, there were no signs that the situation had changed.

ANC showed passengers peeking out from behind curtains of the parked bus and a sign posted on the bus door saying, "Big mistake to correct a big wrong decision."

Mendoza was dismissed a year ago, Margarejo said.

Manila Vice Mayor Ikso Moreno told CNNI that Mendoza's dismissal was for extortion and that he wanted his motion for reconsideration to be heard.

"He felt that it was being neglected," Moreno said. "So he went on hostaging a bus full of foreign individuals. So when we talked to him this afternoon, that's what he wanted."

Moreno said that Mendoza's brother was arrested because he was "guilty of conspiring with his brother" and allegedly helped instigate the shooting.

Moreno said when he arrived near the site of the standoff in the company of Mendoza's brother and the chief hostage negotiator, "All of a sudden, he kept on shouting, 'Don't let go until they give my gun back! Don't let go! Don't let go!' He just shout, one moment -- Captain Mendoza just fired his gun."

Mendoza sprayed machine gun fire at the hostages, a police spokesman told CNN. At 8 p.m. Monday, police stormed the bus, which held 15 hostages, killing Mendoza.

In Manila, Philippine President Benigno Aquino III said he had ordered an investigation, and would wait until it is completed before deciding whether anyone should lose his or her job.

"As the president, my opinion might already sway the investigative panel, which might hamper them in ferreting out the truth, so I will not do that at this time," he said.

Aquino said the news media may have worsened the situation by giving the shooter "a bird's-eye view of the entire situation," but said he had little choice but to let it play out the way it did. "If we ordered a news blackout, you would tell us we were guilty of censoring news," he said. "We did vow transparency."

CNN's Sarita Harilela and journalists Constance Cheng, Maria Ressa and Arlene Samson-Espiritu contributed to this report.

Master’s Transportation uses a low-pressure, consultative sales approach. Our goal is to match you with the right bus or buses to suit your needs.   If you would like to learn more about our available inventory, we invite you to browse our online catalog and submit a quote request. You can also contact our sales team by phone for more personalized service.

How much do tour buses cost?

Master’s Transportation’s large inventory allows us to offer extremely competitive pricing on all new and used motor coaches and travel vans. Our prices are some of the lowest in the industry because we receive volume discounts from our long-standing partners in manufacturing.

With that being said, several factors will impact the cost of your bus or van. These factors include the model, age, mileage, equipment package, and financing method you select.

Can I finance a new or used travel bus?

Yes, Master’s Transportation offers several financing and leasing options , including:

  • Operational leases
  • Short-term lease
  • Financed leases
  • Trac leases
  • Purchase financing

Our tour buses can be leased for seasonal or yearly time frames, depending on your needs.

Leasing is an excellent choice due to the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, which has limited the in-stock inventory of our tour buses for sale.

If you are looking for a way to unlock additional savings, take advantage of the Section 179 IRS deduction to reduce your tax obligations.

Do you offer repair services or parts for tour vehicles?

Of course we do! Beyond sales and rentals, we also serve as a reliable partner for tour bus repair and maintenance services, in addition to having access to thousands of parts for commercial vehicles spanning a wide range of makes and models.

How many passengers can a tour bus hold?

The seating capacity of your vehicle will vary greatly depending on which model you choose. For instance, our tour vans typically carry between 10-15 passengers whereas our large motor coaches can accommodate as many as 75 tourists. We also offer intermediate-sized tour buses that can accommodate 15-30 guests.

Do tour bus drivers need a CDL?

Tour bus drivers must possess a CDL if they are operating a vehicle that can accommodate more than 15 passengers. Tour vans or buses that carry 15 passengers or less do not require a CDL to drive.

Can I buy a tour bus that is located in another city or state?

Of course! Master’s Transportation offers nationwide delivery. If you have found the perfect tour bus, but it is located outside of your state of residence, give us a call. We can arrange for the vehicle to be delivered straight to you.

Can I rent one of your tour buses or vans?

Yes! Master’s Transportation is the nation’s largest commercial bus rental company. Whether you need a short-term or long-term rental, we will be glad to assist.

Elvis's TCB Tour Bus Missing?

2010 tour bus

The bus, which was supposed to be one of the eye catchers of the Elvis Heights Museum in Tupelo, was taken from the lot. Bill Kinard, who owns the Heights Museum, stated: we've just been informed yesterday, by the police that Mr. Larry Michael, owner of Transport Trailers and Celebrity Coaches, moved the bus to another location, without asking us and getting permission.

We have filed a missing and/or stolen bus report with the police. I spoke with a Detective yesterday, and he said, "I found the bus and have personally inspected the bus inside and outside". We hope that we'll be "victorious" against the man that is holding our bus illegally, in court. It has been and still is our goal to not only have the bus at "Presley Heights Museum" for all fans to "see and climb aboard and tour Elvis' last tour bus".

To be continued - no doubt

The most dramatic stories involving celebrity tour buses

Some crazy things go down when rock stars hit the road! Wonderwall.com is rounding up some of the wildest stories from celebrity tour buses, starting with this unbelievable tale from 2004. The Dave Matthews Band was driving through Chicago to their next gig when their tour bus driver decided it was time to empty the septic tank — right above an architecture sightseeing cruise boat floating in the Chicago River. More than 100 passengers on board were covered with the contents — people reported that a terrible-smelling "brownish-yellow slurry" fell on them, causing many to get sick. The driver was sentenced to 18 months of probation, 150 hours of community service and a $10,000 fine for his actions after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of reckless conduct and water pollution. Keep reading for even more tales from the road, from drug busts to crashes to robbery and more…

This one's not too shocking: Willie Nelson was busted for having marijuana and narcotic mushrooms on his bus while he was on the road back in 2006. It started with a commercial vehicle inspection in Louisiana and ended with law enforcement smelling marijuana and proceeding to do a search that turned up one and a half pounds of pot and three ounces of narcotic mushrooms — resulting in misdemeanor charges split between the people on board. It wouldn't be Willie's first run-in like this: In 2010, he was arrested after marijuana was found on his bus in Texas.

In the very same spot on the Texas border where Willie Nelson got busted for weed in 2010, Snoop Dogg 's tour bus was busted for having pot on it too in 2012. A drug-sniffing dog discovered a prescription bottle with rolled marijuana cigarettes on board, and after Snoop Dogg admitted it was his, he was arrested.

Metallica tragically lost a band member while out on the road in September 1986. While promoting their album "Master of Puppets," the rock group's tour bus driver lost control while driving in Sweden. Bassist Cliff Burton (left) was thrown from his bunk, went through a window and was crushed by the bus.

The men of Migos were in hot water in April 2018 after cops found drugs on their tour bus in Boone, North Carolina. Cops working security at the concert smelled marijuana coming from the bus after the show, so the vehicle was stopped on its way out of town. It turned out the cops were correct: The rappers and their entourage had 420 grams of marijuana and 26 ounces of codeine and Xanax aboard the bus. One person was taken into police custody and charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to sell or deliver, one person was given a citation for simple possession of marijuana and codeine and another was cited for possession of Xanax.

When Justin Bieber toured in Sweden in 2013, officers smelled a suspicious odor coming from his tour bus at the arena. They decided to raid it and ended up discovering marijuana and a stun gun. No was was arrested — Justin was actually inside the arena during the raid — but it still made headlines around the world.

Gloria Estefan's tour bus was hit by a truck while traveling near Scranton, Pennsylvania, in 1990. The singer suffered a fractured spine that resulted in doctors having to implant two titanium rods to stabilize her vertebral column.

Nelly got arrested in April 2015 after police discovered methamphetamines and marijuana on his tour bus in Tennessee. After his bus was pulled over on the highway for failing to have two required stickers (one for the U.S. Department of Transportation and one for an International Fuel Tax Association), the rapper found himself charged with felony possession of drugs, simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Aside from the drugs, cops also discovered numerous firearms, which got another man in Nelly's entourage, Brian Jones, in trouble for being a felon in possession of a handgun.

The 2015 bust wasn't Nelly's first time in trouble on the road. In October 2012, the rapper's bus was found to be transporting heroin, marijuana and a loaded pistol while crossing a Texas border patrol checkpoint. In that incident, Nelly wasn't charged, but Brian Jones — the man arrested with him in Tennessee — was taken into custody after admitting the drugs and gun were his.

ZZ Top had a buffalo escape from their tour cavalcade. Yep, you read that right — the band traveled with wild animals including a buffalo, vultures, longhorn steer and rattlesnakes during their "Worldwide Texas" tour from 1976 to 1977 and the buffalo escaped not once but twice! Both times, there was plenty of damage involved — the first time in Pittsburgh when multiple animals broke loose and damaged a field, and the second time when a buffalo wrecked limos that were parked by the venue.

Back in 2013, Rihanna 's tour bus had drugs on it while crossing the border from Canada. While on their way to Detroit, Rihanna 's buses were stopped by officials with drug-sniffing dogs that smelled weed. Rihanna herself wasn't implicated — or even on the buses at the time — but someone from her touring entourage was busted.

One of the tour buses in Miley Cyrus 's entourage went off a Virginia highway in 2009, hitting an embankment and overturning. The crash killed the driver and injured nine people.

Miley Cyrus 's tour buses haven't had the best track record. In 2014, a bus carrying her mother, Tish Cyrus, and sister Noah Cyrus went up in flames on the way to a stop in New Orleans. Fortunately, no one was injured.

While on tour with Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz's tour bus was stopped outside of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for a broken taillight in 2013. Police suspected that drugs were aboard, but passengers refused to let police search the bus. This resulted in cops towing the tour bus and getting a warrant to search it, with passengers including 2 Chainz all eventually being arrested for obstruction of a public officer. For his part, 2 Chainz claimed via a tweet that the police ended up finding nothing on the bus, though the standoff still made headlines.

While heading to a tour stop in Boston, Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo and his family were on a tour bus that hit a patch of ice and crashed. Rivers suffered three cracked ribs and internal injuries in the 2009 accident.

After a traffic stop in Florida in 2002, Kid Rock's tour bus was found to be transporting cocaine, marijuana, a glass pipe and rolling papers. Kid Rock's personal assistant was the only passenger on board and was charged with felony and misdemeanor drug possession.

Miranda Cosgrove was out on her "Dancing Crazy" summer tour in 2011 when her tour bus crashed into an overturned tractor-trailer on a highway in Illinois. Though she didn't have any major injuries, the Nickelodeon star had to cancel her remaining tour dates. She lated sued both drivers, claiming the accident resulted in her label dumping her. She also alleged that it caused her to lose a $400,000 Neutrogena contract due to her injuries.

Michael Todd, the bass player for Coheed and Cambria, made quite the splash ahead of a 2011 show in Mansfield, Massachusetts. Hours before his band was slated to open for Soundgarden, police say he went to a Walgreens pharmacy and threatened to bomb it if he wasn't given pain pills. The pharmacist acquiesced, handing over six bottles of oxycodone, and Michael headed back to his tour bus at the venue in a taxi… where police soon arrested him. Needless to say, he didn't join his bandmates on stage that night. He was later arraigned on charges of armed robbery and drug possession.

Frequently asked questions about tour buses, what are the other names for a tour bus.

As the name suggests, tour buses are used to carry passengers over long distances in the course of a tour/trip they have undertaken. Tour buses are of various types, and this is the standard version of a tour bus wherein front-facing seats are occupied the passengers, with certain other amenities like TVs installed. More luxurious tour buses used by performing artists and their crew and other high-profile clients may contain sleeping beds and a whole slew of luxurious facilities embedded within the tour bus to facilitate extensive travel in a most comfortable manner.

Tour buses are also known as sleeper buses, tour coaches, band tour buses, entertainment buses, sightseeing buses, etc. At Nations Bus Sales, we offer you an impressive inventory of new and used tour buses for sale. Drop an inquiry with us at [email protected] or call us directly at +1 800 523 3262.

Inside Celebrity Tour Buses: The Modifications Stars Make to their Mobile Homes

Who isn’t fascinated by celebrity homes? We love seeing the outrageous additions that adorn the mansions of the rich and famous. Couches worth tens of thousands of dollars, gourmet kitchens, and master bedrooms fit for royalty aren’t uncommon inside the homes of our favorite stars.

Not surprisingly, their mobile homes are no different.

For entertainers such as supermodels, singers, and even pro golfers, touring is what pulls in the most cash— a band can take home 35% of one night’s ticket sales plus up to 50% of the merchandise profits over one tour. Tirelessly entertaining dedicated fans from  New York to Chicago to Los Angeles  and every city in between, these celebrities may play up to 180 gigs in one year. When work requires such lengthy stretches of traveling on the road, comfortable mobile living space is a necessity.

While it seems a bit odd at first— why not just fly from one venue to another and save the time difference?— touring with a bus really is the most cost-effective and certainly the most convenient way to move a team around. These modified tour buses take away the stress of living out of a suitcase and provide celebrities with a “home base” where they can relax, unwind, and store all of their things in one consistent spot between appearances. It isn’t just a bus— it’s an office, a bedroom, a living room, a storage area, and a communal area to bond with your band and team, all in one big box on wheels.

Between living rooms, full bedrooms, and full bathrooms, celebrities work closely with companies that specialize in modifying tour buses to make them as homely and as comfortable as possible. These celebrities also tend to put a unique “touch” on their buses, some “touches” more outrageous than others. From leather couches to over-the-top back lounges, state-of-the-art kitchens, and even upstairs (yes, upstairs) lounges, celebrities certainly know how to get creative when it comes to building a unique “home away from home.”

All buses can be divided into four basic sections: a front lounge, which functions as a living room; a kitchen, or more typically, a “kitchenette;” a bunk area, where the band sleeps; and a back lounge, which is a bit of a “wild card” on these buses.

Keep reading to have a look inside the most extravagant celebrity tour buses we could find!

THE FRONT LOUNGE

A front lounge can usually seat about 10 people. They’re very “homey,” and great for socializing with band members and entourages or hosting friends and family. On either side of the lounge are usually couches, one of which is most likely placed on a “slide—” a mechanism that slides out when the bus is parked, adding up to 60 square feet of space and creating a proper living area.

front lounge of a celebrity tour bus

While some celebrities prefer to keep their lounges simple and sweet— as Kenny Rogers says of his humble wheeled abode, “You buy what you need and you fix it up great!” — others like to beef theirs up a bit with luxury couches, oversized TVs, or high-tech controls.

Tommy Lee’s coach features a cozy front lounge with two leather-upholstered couches costing $25,000 each.

The front lounge may also include some sort of “master control” for the entire bus. John Legend has an iPad connected to his bus’s server for controlling light settings, changing the television and music, and adjusting the air temperature. Stored right in the same server are over 1,000 movies so there’s always something good to watch on the road.

TVs are also a must-have for all front lounges, and you’d better believe they come big— Heidi Klum’s front lounge features a 46-inch screen embedded into the wall. Mariah Carey’s mobile castle features THREE 60-inch TVs plus an extra screen hidden behind her makeup mirror!

Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey ended up having two of our favorite mobile homes— we’ll explain why later.

Also included in many front lounges is a killer sound system that would compete with any typical grounded studio. The Eli Young Band’s bus includes a 12-speaker system that’s used for blasting music through after parties and rocking the bus on the road with their favorite albums. “Loud” is the best way to listen to music, right?

THE KITCHEN

After the lounge area comes the kitchen. On a typical RV, kitchens are almost nonexistent— it is, after all, quite difficult not only to store all of the usual kitchen equipment but also to make room for appliances such as a stove, oven, and microwave, not to mention necessary counter space and cabinets. On top of all of that, who even has time to cook for themselves while they’re busy playing shows? Kitchens simply aren’t a priority on the road for most. The usual mobile kitchen features are a coffee maker, an electric tea kettle, and a mini-fridge.

Kitchen on the bus of a celebrity

John Legend’s bus, however, houses a full stove top, a toaster, a microwave that doubles as a convection oven, and extra cabinet space for preparing gourmet meals in between performances.

Despite limited space, though, alcohol is always a priority. For entertaining an entourage and unwinding after big shows, drinks on-demand are a must-have. Gwen Stefani’s coach includes a wine chiller, always stocked with a wide selection of her favorite blends.

Jake Owen’s kitchen even has a beer tap— every time his band stops in a new city, they will make an agreement to trade show tickets with a local brewery in exchange for a local beer on-tap on the bus.

Ron White’s kitchen features a hidden-away humidor with two sides— one for his cigar stash, and one for his scotch.

Brad Pitt’s mobile kitchen takes the cake. His features all of the amenities of any usual kitchen— the stove, the oven, the microwave, the counter, and the cabinet space— plus a built-in full refrigerator and dishwasher, totaling a cost of $60,000 just for the kitchen— more than double what the average person spends on a kitchen remodel in their house!

Past the usual mobile kitchen, you’ll find the bunks. Sleeping on a bus sounds painfully uncomfortable, right? The way most celebrities do it, it doesn’t have to be. Typically, each bunk features its own mini television, a curtain for privacy, individual controls for air conditioning and lighting, and sometimes memory foam mattresses! The average tour bus bunk is just about the size of a regular twin-size bed.

bunk interior of a celebrity tour bus

Lee Brice, however, took it up a notch on his bus with custom oversize bunks, which they call “condo bunks,” that feature all the regular amenities at a slightly larger size for extra comfort.

Many celebrities report that sleeping in mobile bunks isn’t so bad— the movement of the bus has a tendency to rock them to sleep, which is necessary considering the grueling daily schedules they may keep during a tour.

Most buses can accommodate 6-8 bunks, in which everyone can have their defined private space separate from everybody else. You’ll usually see pictures of family, charging outlets, and various other personal belongings inside each bunk.

THE BACK LOUNGE

Back lounges are where we find some of the most unique modifications.

For the most part, celebrities keep the back lounge as their private bed area— everyone needs their own quiet space, right? There’s usually a master bathroom included in the back, too, with a full shower, walk-in closet, and counter space. Tommy Lee’s master bathroom includes a full-size shower with a TV in the wall, and a closet with a fuzzy rail to keep hangers from sliding while the bus is moving.

John Legend’s master suite includes a plush queen-sized bed that slides out just like the couches in the front lounge. Also in his master suite is a 5.1 surround-sound system, with a subwoofer under the bed to make movie-watching in the back even more exciting.

hemphill brothers back lounge on a celebrity tour bus

Back lounges are more than just bedrooms, though. Travis Barker’s master bed folds up into the wall with the push of a button, creating the perfect private space for practicing his drums. He’s also made room for not just one, but two bathrooms on his coach, so there’s never any fighting over who’s getting the coveted bathroom space.

Laura Bell Bundy had a dance studio built in her back lounge, complete with a full-length mirror and a ballet bar, allowing her to practice routines between shows.

Ashley Monroe’s back room has been dubbed a “girls-only zone,” where she and her girlfriends can get ready for shows together and stay secluded from the rest of her band.

However, back lounges also have many more specific uses, such as that of Hunter Hayes— situated in the back of his bus is a full recording studio, in which he makes serious progress on all of his current songs. The studio features a mixing station, multiple monitors, and 5.1 surround sound. In it, he’s finished 20-30 demos while on the road.

Our favorite back room, though, belongs to Jeff Dunham— he has a full workshop in the back of his bus where he can not only construct but also repair his puppets while on the road, ensuring that they remain in pristine condition for shows.

Now, if all of this makes you roll your eyes and say, “of course they have all that, they’re celebrities!” Just wait— we aren’t quite finished yet.

Have a look inside these 3 over-the-top celebrity homes. These coaches are so spectacular that we couldn’t even single out our favorite features above!

Supermodel Heidi Klum is the proud owner of what is possibly the “greenest” mobile home on the planet. Her office on wheels is the world’s only 100% solar-powered RV, packed with countless other “green” modifications throughout the interior and exterior.

The designers of this eco-friendly coach took great care in conserving energy in every way possible when constructing Heidi’s mobile workspace. All throughout the RV are energy-efficient LED bulbs, which draw less power and don’t add heat to the coach; and high-grade eco-friendly fabric, covering the floor and upholstery. Located by the living space is a control panel, at which one staff member is tasked with ensuring that the RV runs exclusively off of solar power for as long as possible (in the event of an emergency, the coach can easily be switched to draw power from a generator).

With a floor plan that more closely resembles a luxury hotel room than a motor home, this coach includes a total of 320 square feet of living space, including a couch, a loveseat, and a 42-inch TV. Without a bunk area like most other buses, the main living space flows into a spacious kitchenette with a full-size refrigerator, a desk made completely out of recycled wood, and a small sink. The back room serves as a makeup area and dressing room, complete with an oversize mirror surrounded by eco-friendly lights, and a professional- grade hair-washing sink.

MARIAH CAREY

2010 tour bus

Just the front lounge and kitchen of Mariah Carey’s mobile mansion cover 600 square feet— bigger than most New York studio apartments! The lounge includes a 15-foot custom couch, a 25-foot slide on one side, and a 30-foot slide on the other. Facing the oversized couch is a 65-inch TV, connected to a 5.1 studio-grade surround-sound system. In the back is a full kitchen with a full stove top, refrigerator, convection oven, and a kangen water machine— a $4000 water ionizer designed to purify tap water by removing alkaline minerals.

Right by the kitchen is Mariah’s makeup station featuring a mirror surrounded by makeup lights, with a TV placed directly behind the surface of the mirror so that Mariah can watch her favorite shows while she’s getting her hair and makeup done.

Fantastic, right? We would expect nothing less from a star of Mariah’s status. But guess what? The top of this bus expands to an entire second story . That’s right— this bus is two stories tall when parked.

The second floor of this skyscraper on wheels is connected to the first by a marble staircase. Upstairs, you’ll find unique lighting with a color wheel, creating the perfect mobile dance club for Mariah and her entourage. Wrapping around the back of the dance floor is a 35-foot rounded couch that can seat up to 30 people, facing two more 60-inch TVs, one placed at either end of the bus.

All of the over-the-top amenities in this luxurious mobile tour home, which includes more than two tons of marble and stone, bring the cost to a staggering $1.8 million.

STEVE ELKINGTON

2010 tour bus

Pro golfer Steve Elkington takes the grand prize for the most insane mobile home modifications. His stunning mobile estate, which he’s nicknamed “The Big Show,” is an astounding 1,130 square feet, spread over two stories just like Mariah Carey’s moving castle. Standing in Steve’s over-the-top estate feels less like being in a bus and more like being in a cozy cottage— the coach is modeled after a golf clubhouse, meant to have that “19th-hole” vibe that all golfers love. Included in this wheeled mansion are a full washer and dryer, a full kitchen, a living room, a pro shop, a shoe rack, and a master suite, all on one massive mobile manor.

The kitchen features a full gas stove, an oven, and high-end appliances, with a restaurant-style booth for dining. The living room features a typical slide on the right side with the couch, adding even more square feet to the home. Just past the living room is Steve’s own putting green and a pro shop, where guests can come in and browse some of his golf gear. Next to the shop is his personal shoe rack and a station for cleaning and polishing his collection of shoes.

Right by the stairs are the full washer and dryer, tucked away in their own closet for when it’s time to take care of a few chores.

The roof lifts 35 feet to reveal a master suite, complete with a queen-size bed and a pop-up tv disguised as a cabinet at the foot of the bed. The TV screen can swivel to face the master bed or the two plush chairs that Steve and his wife often use to read or relax between games.

Finally, the home is completed with a luxurious master bathroom by the bed area.

From leather-upholstered living rooms to walk-in closets to upstairs dance clubs, we can’t say that we aren’t a little jealous of these luxurious buses . With living on these spectacular mobile mansions and simultaneously touring for months at a time year after year, it’s clear that these celebrities know how to work hard and play hard.
