The best road trip stops on the Atlanta to Washington DC drive are Greenville SC, Durham NC and Richmond VA. The distance from Atlanta to Washington DC by car is 638 miles, with a 9h30m driving time.

Planning an Atlanta to Washington DC road trip itinerary

The Atlanta to Washington DC drive connects the biggest city in Georgia to the capital of the US.

Atlanta played a massive part in the Civil Rights movement, and a black history and civil rights tour is pretty much a must-do.

For more Atlanta experiences , try a sightseeing trolley tour for orientation and overview. Or a guided bike ride to get a better feel for the neighbourhoods.

Other Atlanta favourites include the World of Coca Cola , Midtown food and cocktail tours and multi-brewery beer tours .

Washington DC has an enormous range of tours, experiences and attractions available. You could happily spend weeks in the Smithsonian Museums alone. Top choices, however, include the nighttime monuments and memorials tour , small group guided visits to the Capitol and National Library of Congress and Lincoln assassination tours that visit Fords Theatre.

Atlanta to Washington DC distance and driving time

Greenville SC is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US. It strikes a nice balance between outdoorsiness, culture and decadence. Falls Park on the Reedy brings cascades near the city center.  The Upcountry History Museum covers regional history. Once the capital of the Confederacy, Richmond VA is not entirely weighed down by its history. The surprisingly wild James River runs through it, and the west end feels energetic and more of the North than the South.

The top attraction, though, is the huge American Civil War Museum at the historic Tredegar Ironworks . After that, walk the suspension bridge to Belle Isle in the middle of the James River, see the dubious Confederate monuments on Monument Avenue, or see the grandiose tombs of the Hollywood Cemetery.

Other good Richmond experiences include food tours of the Arts District or Church Hill , Segway tours of the city landmarks, nighttime ghost walks and guided hikes along the James River.

An Eastern USA Road-Trip route- Atlanta to DC

Forest Wilderness and DC; This was my second road-trip in the USA, after road tripping from Denver to San Francisco, a couple years prior, we decided we wanted to yet again return to America, to explore more of its National Parks. The Great Smoky Mountains were top of the list and the idea developed from there. After extensive research, as there weren't many route ideas out there, for the time we had, we came up with a route. So here’s a breakdown of a 24 day road trip from Atlanta, Georgia to Washington D.C. The route encompasses National Parks and Forests, Waterfalls, American history and DC, navigating through Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Washington D.C.

Day 1: Home to Atlanta, Georgia

Catch a flight to Atlanta!

Day 2: Atlanta, Georgia to Weaverville, North Carolina

Drive time: 4 hours

atlanta to dc road trip

We stopped off in Downtown Atlanta, took a stroll in the centennial Olympic park then got on the road.

Optional: I’d recommend adding 25 mins to your journey to stop off at Tallulah Gorge State Park, to see your first waterfall of the trip, stretch your legs and look out for bears.

For lunch stop in a town called Clayton try out, White Birch Provisions and Grapes & Beans.

Waterfall count: 1

Day 3-6: Weaverville, North Carolina

atlanta to dc road trip

'The is no wifi in the forest but I promise you will find a better connection.'

Weaverville is a quiet place to stay with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Pisgah National Forest, Nantahala National Forest and Cherokee National Forest all on your doorstep it makes an ideal base to explore. Alternatively, stay in Asheville, North Carolina, a much bigger, more vibrant, and bustling city, with history, art galleries, museums, good food, street art and all the parks still on your doorstep.

Visit the town of Cherokee at the heart of the Cherokee Nation on the borders of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway, along the Oconcluftee River Valley and support this indigenous community. The Cherokee Nation has had their land more than halved through forced migration, read about the 'Trail of Tears' and educate yourself on their history, support business' like their living museum to learn more, along with other business' in the reservation, they rely on tourism for most of their income. To the Cherokee this land is known as "sha-cona-ge" the land of the blue mist.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the USA’s few no fee remaining NP’s. It also attracts the most visitors per year of all NP’s, however, don't worry, a large proportion of the trails we were on, there were very few people. Also check out the ziplining, scenic train ride and aerial trams. I don’t think I've ever seen as many trees as the Smoky Mountains, the mountain ridges went as far as the eye can see, as the blue hues give the place its iconic name. The Great Smoky Mountains NP is huge and some of the hikes I recommend in our hiking guide (coming soon!) take you over into Tennessee, ticking another state off the list! It didn't take long before we saw our first bear of the road-trip, in the car on our first day in Weaverville.

Staying in Weaverville try: Glass Onion, Twisted Laurel or Well Bred Bakery

Take a drive to the famous Biltmore Estate making sure to book ahead a table at Sunset Terrace for an unforgettable dinner with a view (try the 7 layer chocolate cake).

Head into the most bustling city of Asheville and head to Bouchon (the best meal we had whilst staying in the Smoky Mountains).

Waterfall count: 4 Wild Bear Count: 1

Day 7: Weaverville, North Carolina to Seven Devils, North Carolina

Drive time: 2 hours

In reality with the amount of stops for photos you’ll make along the way, the 2 hour drive time is much longer, but there’s no rush, put on a good playlist and embrace the views, it takes ‘taking the scenic route’ to a new level. Detour to Linville Falls for one of the most impressive and my favourite waterfall of the whole trip.

For yummy fresh enormous sandwiches stop off in Boone and try out Stickyboy Bread Co

Head to Appalachian cookie co to pick up some (huge) award winning cookies (they are truly deserving of the award).

Waterfall count: 6

Day 8: Seven Devils, North Carolina

Drive time: 30 minutes

atlanta to dc road trip

You must pay a fee to enter Grandfather Mountain State Park, but it was a highlight, when researching I wanted to head there because of their swinging bridge, this is what it is famed for, what I did not realise is that it houses a rescue centre. It has a variety of animals, including bears rescued from entertainment. As this state park is privately owned the entrance fee is quite steep at $20 per adult, on a positive note, this does include a guided audio of the whole park, access to the conservation area and swinging bridge, plus trails and viewpoints. You'll weave your way up walking or in the car, via trailheads, view points, split rock and the conservation area. You then continue further up into the park and reach the famed mile high swinging bridge. The walk across, may be a bit hair raising for some, especially on a crowded or windy day, get across and have a fantastic view of Grandmother mountain below.

The original Cherokee name for the mountain was 'Tanawha' meaning 'a faboulous eagle'.

Day 9: Seven Devils, North Carolina to Durham, North Carolina

Drive time: 3 hours

atlanta to dc road trip

Stop off at Blowing Rock for food as well as cool artists studios and shops. Check out art walk style for some cool pieces even personalise your own number plate art. This American flag in Durham is made up of thousands of toy soldiers!

Blowing Rock; The Backstreet Bakery

Days 10-12: Durham, North Carolina to Port Haywood, Virginia

Drive time: 3.5 hours

atlanta to dc road trip

Time to put our feet up for a couple days, at a beach house overlooking Chesapeake Bay. A simple day of kayaking, swimming and relaxing.

Optional: a day to explore the historical triangle ( Drive time: 1 hour) , Williamsburg, Jamestowne and Yorktown. You can opt to pay to enter the reconstructed buildings in Williamsburg or just opt to explore the area. The living museum is making moves from celebrating colonial legacy to focussing on historical accuracy and cultural reconsideration, something which is extremely important and long overdue.

Day 13: Port Haywood, Virginia to Stanardsville, Virginia

atlanta to dc road trip

Take the opportunity to explore your American History at Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Plantation home, visit and learn more about the plantation and slave trade then opt to explore the grounds. Go on a guided tour of the house, our tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging, and keen to converse with those on the tour, answering an abundance of questions. Despite, the famous line penned by Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence,

'We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal'

he was a slave owner. Only freeing 2 in his lifetime. This fact isn't shied away from during the tour, at least our tour guide didn't. Although, I think it is important to do your own research in addition, to get the least bias information you can. There are various types of ticket; a standard day pass costs $29 for an adult and includes the guided tour of a large proportion of the home.

Stop off in Richmond at Lamplights roasting co or Subrosa Bakery for food on the way.

Day 14-17: Stanardsville, Virginia

We once again opted to stay in the much quieter rural town of Stanardsville, alternatively stay in the much more built up Charlottesville, Virginia, where you’ll find an array of cafes and restaurants. Both are great options for exploring Shenandoah National Park, George Washington and Jefferson National Forest. Shenandoah has an entrance fee of $30 per vehicle, if you are visiting other national parks with entry fees it is worth considering an ‘America the beautiful pass’ for $80 you can get these at https://store.usgs.gov/pass/index.html or enquire at a park, this will save you a lot of money. Check out my hiking guide for more information trails and shedding a light on segregation in Shenandoah, it is coming soon. This is where we saw the most bears (so keep your eyes peeled)! If cars are slowing down or queued up on the road there's probably a bear sighting, don't get out your vehicle to get a closer look be patient and you'll probably get a glimpse for yourself, make sure you know what to do if you encounter a bear on a hike before heading out.

Head into Charlottesville

Downtown Grille.

Waterfall Count: 7 Wild Bear Count: 12

Day 18: Stanardsville, Virginia to Luray, Virginia

Drive time: 1 hour

atlanta to dc road trip

Jump in the car and take in the views of the Skyline drive, and your last chance to spot any bears.

Day 19: Luray, Virginia

Drive time: 5 minutes

atlanta to dc road trip

Luray is a great pitstop if you want to see the caverns. They are the largest caves in Eastern USA, be prepared for the guides to constantly bombard you with rock and cave puns, and look out for the insane reflections within the caves pools. The price of an adult ticket is $26, it may seem a lot but it’s worth it. Then take some time to rest, to prepare for the upcoming jam packed days in D.C.

Range View Overlook

Luray does not have many options for food, head for lunch at Gathering Grounds

Day 20: Luray, Virginia to Washington DC

atlanta to dc road trip

Opt to divert to Mount Vernon taking an extra 30 minutes, to explore George Washington’s Plantation home and delve into American history once again. The tour here, unlike Monticello, was more glorified, upon research, the tours are apparently being rethought and updated, it will be interesting to read reviews on this. The price of an adult ticket is $20. Alternatively opt to see your last waterfall (Great Falls) of the trip on George Washington Memorial Parkway detouring about 20 minutes.

Stop for lunch in Fairfax

True Food Kitchen

Best Road Trip Destinations: Atlanta to D.C.

The entrance to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta.

It’s still not too late to hit the open road and enjoy one last road trip before the winter weather arrives. So whether you make your way down the iconic Route 66 , are touring some of America’s best rest stops , or are cruising down the picturesque Blue Ridge Parkway — there is sure to be a road trip for everyone to enjoy.

For those close to the “Peach State,” taking a trip from the state’s capital to our nation’s capital can offer you a chance to see some of America’s most beautiful landscapes while also being able to dive deeper into our country’s rich history.

To help you plan your next road trip , here are some of the top stops to make between Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

Start with Georgia Aquarium (Pictured Above)

Before getting in your car, truck, or SUV to start your first leg of your road trip, take some time and explore the wonders of the deep sea at the Georgia Aquarium . As one of the largest aquariums in the world, you’ll have a chance to see hundreds of different species of aquatic life in more than 10 million gallons of water!

For a more hands-on visit, be one of the first to get up close and personal at a poolside training session of the aquarium’s beluga whales , or help train a harbor seal . You can even get a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the most popular exhibits. If you have a few nights to spare, you can even spend a night at the aquarium at one of many offered “ Sleep Under the Sea ” experiences!

Stone Mountain Park

The Washington W. King Bridge at Stone Mountain Park, GA.

Located about 20 miles east of Atlanta is what many consider to be Georgia’s “most visited attraction” — Stone Mountain Park . Here, visitors can spend their time in over 3,200 acres of land at the state’s largest family campground , such as hiking 15 miles of trails . We also recommend taking the 1-mile trail up to the top of Stone Mountain where you’ll have picture-perfect views while you’re standing over 1,683 feet above sea level. Be sure to stay on the lookout for some of the native wildlife, as you’ll have the chance to see species such as red foxes, whitetail deer, wild turkeys, and eastern bluebirds.

After your hike, take some time and enjoy some rounds at either of the 2 available golf courses in the area or putt your way through 18 holes of the Great Locomotive Chase Adventure Golf . For the historians in your group, take a stroll to the nearly century-old Washington W. King Bridge , or explore over 5,400 square feet of exhibits at the Historical & Environmental Education Center . No matter what, there is always something to do or see at Stone Mountain Park.

Falls Park on the Reedy

The view of Falls Park in Greenville, SC.

Roughly 145 miles northeast of Stone Mountain Park lies the beautiful Falls Park on the Reedy . Located in the historic West End of downtown Greenville, South Carolina, this incredible park features the scenic Liberty Bridge overlooking a gorgeous waterfall and lush greenery. It’s so picturesque that they even offer visitors a chance to get their portrait taken at the park, but you must reserve your slot 30 days in advance! Film crews also are required to obtain certain permits to shoot in the park.

After spending some time taking in the scenery of the falls, be sure to make your way over to the main downtown area for an array of delicious dining options. You can even work off some of your lunch and dinner at the Swamp Rabbit Trail and its nearly 14-mile path along the Reedy River. Or make your way to the Greenville Zoo where you’ll have a chance to see hundreds of different wildlife species across the 14-acre facility.

NASCAR Hall of Fame

Just 105 miles east of Greenville, SC, is Charlotte, North Carolina. However, despite being famous for the renowned Charlotte Motor Speedway , the next stop on our trip is the NASCAR Hall of Fame ! While the Hall of Fame itself is relatively new, having only opened its doors on May 11, 2010, the sport of NASCAR has been around for decades. In fact, since Red Byron and his Ford crossed the first finish in February of 1948 in Daytona, NASCAR has since become one of the most popular sports in the country.

At the Hall of Fame, you can make your way around various exhibits that honor some of the greatest moments and drivers over the last 7 decades of NASCAR history. Deep dive more into the careers of legendary drivers like Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty or grab some popcorn and learn about the sport’s history in the 278 seat High Octane Theater . You can even get behind the wheel of a full-sized stock car replica and race against a field of 15 competitors with the help of state-of-the-art racing simulators !

Colonial Williamsburg

A row of colonial houses located in Colonial Williamsburg, VA.

Revisit America’s origins in Colonial Williamsburg . Located about 330 miles from Charlotte in Williamsburg, Virginia, visitors can get a first-hand look at what life was like back in the 18th century by exploring over 300 acres of historical sites in what is considered to be the world’s largest living history museum.

From visiting the Anderson blacksmith shop , diving into the world of colonial medicine at the apothecary , checking out the latest fashion of the era at the tailor , or any of the other historical areas to visit — there is plenty to do and experience during your time in Colonial Williamsburg.

If you’re staying the night, be sure to check out the Colonial Houses , where you can spend your evening living in a full replica house of the time. Or, if more modern amenities are more your cup of tea, you can hit the links at the Golden Horse Golf Club or relax and enjoy some time at the spa .

Manassas National Battlefield Park

Located about 150 miles north of Williamsburg lies the Manassas National Battlefield Park . Here you can learn about 2 significant battles of the American Civil War, making it a great educational stop for families and history buffs alike.

Whether you retrace the First Battle of Manassas (referred to as the Battle of Bull Run by Union forces) or the Second Battle of Manassas, guided tours can help you get up close and personal to some of America’s most pivotal battles of the war.

Korean War Veterans Memorial

The last stop on our 620+ mile journey is the Korean War Veterans Memorial . Dedicated in 1995 and honoring those who fought in the Korean War, this memorial is located not far from the Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall.

Here, you can make your way around 19 stainless steel statues of American soldiers representing the diversity of America and the armed forces. Nearby, you will find a 164-foot wall housing over 2,400 historical photographs of the war on 41 different panels, as well as the 128-foot diameter Pool of Remembrance.

I’m driving from Atlanta to DC on Wednesday this month. Google maps suggests I-85 to I-95. I see suggestions on this forum to take I-81, but wouldn’t that be longer? I would time trip to avoid rush hours. I also plan to stop overnight, hopefully before dark and to have dinner in a restaurant. If the I-85 routing is acceptable, can you advise on a city about half way, and a hotel just off the highway?

I appreciate any help you can give me.

7 replies to this topic

You could take I-85 N and I-95 N to Washington DC.

You could stay in or near Greensboro, NC.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you suggest a moderately priced hotel $125-155 with easy on-off access to I-85?

atlanta to dc road trip

Raleigh/ durham area is an option or you look at the northern suburbs of charolette.

I usually stay with Comfort Inn or Quality Inn.

You could consider Quality Inn High Point - Archdale.

I'd pick the better rated Drury Inn Greensboro over Quality Inn Archdale, which doesn't have much going on.  Drury has decent buffet breakfast and dinner and usually a few drinks included in the rate and there are restaurants all along the road there.

The I-81 route is slightly longer on paper but can work out to be quicker since I-95 always has congestion.  You could make a decision the morning of your DC leg after checking Waze or other traffic site, but my preference is always 81.

I agree I 81 is a better route. I 95 is really congested.

Atlanta is home to many public parks, but you won’t want to miss Midtown’s Piedmont Park , 200 acres of green space housing hiking trails, green lawns for a variety of sports, a swimming pool and playgrounds for the little ones.

Located next door, is one of Atlanta’s crown jewels, Atlanta Botanical Garden , which adds another 30-acres of lush foliage, gardens and botanical displays in addition to special events. Of course the natural beauty hardly ends with these two locations. Take a look at favorite parks and gardens for the full offering.

Kid favorites

The youngest visitors would probably love spending time at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta for some hands-on playtime or stopping at Center for Puppetry Arts to view puppets from around the world including the collection of Jim Henson puppets, costumes and props.

Prefer to spend time outside with the kids? We’ve got that covered, too, with these 8 outdoor adventures .

What to Eat

Where to start? Barbecue, Southern, innovative? Atlanta’s Food Story is one that is as down to earth as a Varsity hot dog, as varied like the countless international options on Buford highway and as innovative as the talented, resilient neighborhood locales. Kids and adults love King of Pops (gourmet cold treats on a stick). Grab one at the window on Elizabeth Street or find them all over Atlanta. Atlanta is synonymous with soul food, barbecue, fried chicken, sweet tea and famous and up-and-coming chefs . Foodies may want to dive deeper and tick a few boxes on the 25 iconic Atlanta dishes list or take a cruise down Buford Highway known for its vast array of diverse culinary offerings from Central America, Mexico, Korea and much more.

Searching for a healthy portion of comforting soul food? You’ve come to the right place. Atlanta is home to some famous soul food eateries .

Food halls

ATLANTA (AP) — Mateusz Bogusz scored on a free kick and Hugo Lloris had his third consecutive shutout to help Los Angeles FC beat Atlanta United 1-0 on Saturday night.

LAFC (7-4-3) has won three consecutive games and four of its last five.

Goalkeeper Brad Guzan was shown a red card (denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity) in the 60th minute, was replaced by Josh Cohen and Atlanta played a man down until Eduard Atuesta, who was shown a yellow card in the 10th minute, was shown a red in the 81st.

Bogusz capitalized moments later when he fired a free kick from just outside the area inside the post and under the crossbar to beat the 31-year-old Cohen, making his first MLS appearance, and give LAFC a 1-0 in the 63rd.

Atlanta had 54% possession and outshot LAFC 15-14.

Atlanta (3-7-4) is winless in nine straight since a 3-0 win over the Chicago Fire on March 31.

While Acadia is the United States' smallest national park, it's home to a wealth of wildlife that's simply breathtaking. What's more, on this fantastic road trip, you'll get to travel through iconic cities and to breathtaking mountains on your way to Maine.

The 1,500-mile road trip from Atlanta to Maine takes 27 hours to drive, ending at Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Key stops along the way are Roanoke, Shenandoah National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, New York, Boston and Portland.

Arriving at Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, you'll get to explore the stunning foliage in the park and take a stroll along the waterfront. Read on to discover our favorite routes and find out about the amazing opportunities along the way.

How far are Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park from Atlanta, and how long will the road trip take?

With over 1,300 miles between Atlanta and Acadia National Park, there are many options to choose from when it comes to your road trip route. Luckily, we've set out our two favorite routes here for you to consider. Both routes offer unique activities and experiences with distinct overall vibes.

The most direct route is the Iconic Cities Route, taking you 1,400 miles across America and totalling 22 hours and 30 minutes of travel time. This route can be completed in just three days, but is best enjoyed across five or more, giving you plenty of time to stop at the amazing places to visit en route.

Our other favorite route is the Blue Ridge Parkway Route, which - while longer at 27 hours and 1,500 miles - offers a slower, more relaxed trip with great opportunities to explore. Like with the Iconic Cities Route, travelling across five days (and ideally more) will allow for time to relax, explore and take in the scenery.

Best time to go on a road trip from Atlanta to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

A road trip from Atlanta to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park can be enjoyed all year round, though there is variation between the seasons that you should be aware of.

The region hosts humid subtropical climates and generally mild weather which is perfect for long or short visits. However, to avoid experiencing too much humidity, going during late summer or early fall is best in our opinion.

During winter, snow falls in this area which may disrupt your activities. Temperatures range from 15 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, with colder evenings demanding you wear a coat.

Acadia National Park, blue sky peaceful ocean

Gorgeous flowers bloom during spring, which is definitely advantageous when visiting the beautiful destination of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park - though evenings are often cool during this season too, so bear that in mind when packing for your trip.

Fall welcomes clear blue skies, with temperatures ranging from 50 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Visiting in late fall is not to everyone's taste, as winter-like temperatures and weather may throw a wrench in your plans.

Summer is the best-season to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia, reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit and with minimal wind. However, the season is busy with tourists which may limit the availability of activities - and opportunities to relax if you're not fond of crowds.

In the summer, you'll also get to experience the Bar Harbor Music Festival - an event perfect for simply tapping your feet or dancing the night away! Just make sure you book your accommodation early to avoid disappointment.
