AVENGED SEVENFOLD's first show in 5 years: See videos and setlist

It happened. It finally fucking happened. Avenged Sevenfold played their first show in five years last night (May 12th) in the A-lot of Las Vegas' AREA15, a futuristic venue where the band are hosting their "immersive" listening party this weekend for Life Is but a Dream... , their first album in seven years.

Initially, Avenged Sevenfold were scheduled to make their big return to the stage next weekend at Welcome to Rockville, but they announced this last-minute pop-up show just a couple days back, and last night, a whole gathering of Deathbat die-hards got to experience their glorious live comeback.

The setlist was a spread of old and new, featuring iconic hits like "Bat Country," "Afterlife" and "Nightmare," but also fan favorites such as "Buried Alive," "A Little Piece of Heaven" and "Unholy Confessions," which they sadly had to cut short due to someone in the crowd getting hurt.

However, the most exciting tunes were the ones from the upcoming album that A7X have never played live before. The band opened with a brand new, unreleased song called "Game Over," and later in the night, the previously released singles "Nobody" and "We Love You" got their live debuts. A7X also played a snippet of "Mattel," another song from Life Is but a Dream that isn't out yet.

Avenged Sevenfold Profile

Avenged Sevenfold is a metal band from Huntington Beach, Florida. Avenged Sevenfold is known for its diverse rock sound and dramatic imagery in album covers and merchandise.

Avenged Sevenfold emerged with a metalcore sound on the band’s debut Sounding the Seventh Trumpet and continued this sound through their second album Waking the Fallen. However, Avenged Sevenfold’s style had evolved by the band’s third album and first major label release, City of Evil, into a heavy metal and hard rock style. The band continued to explore new sounds with its self-titled release and enjoyed continued mainstream success before their drummer, James “The Rev” Sullivan, died in 2009. Despite his death, Avenged Sevenfold continued on with the help of drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and released and toured in support of its fifth album Nightmare in 2010, which debuted on the top spot of the Billboard 200, Avenged Sevenfold’s first number one debut.

In 2011 drummer Arin Ilejay joined the band on tours and recording. Avenged Sevenfold’s sixth studio album Hail to the King, which was released in 2013, marked the only Avenged Sevenfold album featuring Arin Ilejay. Hail to the King charted as number 1 on the Billboard 200, the UK Albums chart, as well as the Finnish, Brazilian, Canadian, and Irish charts. In late 2014 Ilejay left the band, and was replaced by former Bad Religion drummer Brooks Wackerman, but wasn’t revealed as his replacement until in 2015 the band announced Ilejay’s departure. The band surprise-released their seventh studio album titled The Stage on October 28, 2016, which debuted as number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart in the US. The Stage is their first conceptual album and it marked another stylistic change for the band, moving towards the progressive metal sound.

The group was mostly quiet throughout the pandemic. In early 2023, they returned with a number of teaser videos, a new single, and a new album.

Setlist, Photos + Video – Avenged Sevenfold Play First Show in Five Years, Debut New Songs + Cover SOAD Classic

This past Friday (May 12), American heavy metal quintet Avenged Sevenfold played their first concert in nearly five years at AREA15 in Las Vegas. In addition to debuting a few new songs, they pulled out several older favorites and even launched into a spontaneous jam of System of a Down ’s “ Chop Suey! ”

Per setlist.fm , the prior Avenged Sevenfold show was on June 30, 2018 (at Lővér Kemping in Sopron, Hungary). Naturally, that means that their latest performance marked the debut of three songs from their upcoming LP, Life Is But a Dream… : “Game Over,” “We Love You” and “Nobody.” Plus, staples such as “Unholy Confessions,” “Afterlife,” “Nightmare” and “Buried Alive” showed up.

What’s more, they preceded “Bat Country” with the aforementioned System of a Down classic.

Last month, the group announced that they’d be playing their entire new record during a  360-degree immersive concert experience at AREA15 from May 11 – 14.

Fantasy Concerts Vol. 3: Avenged Sevenfold – The Eras Set List

So I had this idea:  What if a metal band did the Eras Tour?

You know the one, Taylor Swift has led millions of Swifties across North, South America, Asia and Australia in a 40 song trip through every album in a show full of visuals and costumes that visually and sonically recall past albums and tours.

Which metal bands could do this? What bands had a discography deep and varied enough to make such a show both worthwhile and interesting? I came up with four, the first of which were UK superstars Bring Me The Horizon ( read here ) . Now we head across the Atlantic for modern metal masters Avenged Sevenfold . They certainly have the kind of eclectic songbook and visual presentation that would be cool. 

Wanna know what a AX7 Eras Set List would look, sound and feel like?

It’s a dome shaped stage with a full size LED screen at the back. The stage floor is LED too, shaped like the death bat with the skull coming out from the main stage and the wings going out into the crowd on the sides. There’s an additional LED screen curved at the top of the dome, which displays the band’s name. The band’s usual setup is accompanied by a space for strings and piano. 

Part 1: Nightmare

The stage is covered with gravestones and smoke. The gravestone in front of the drum kit is illuminated to read “ REV ” before filling out to complete the word “ foREVer ”. The band kicks off ‘Nightmare’ , with the stage still dark since only their stage places are illuminated by lights from the floor and pyro on the chorus. They go straight into ‘Welcome to the Family’ and all stage lights come on. There’s a pause for the intro to ‘God Hates Us’ with Gates and Vengeance picking up the riff, covered in red lights and smoke. Gates heads to the centre front of the stage for the intro to ‘Buried Alive ’, accompanied by Vengeance, Christ and Shadows as their parts kick in. The string players take their place as Shadows talks to the crowd before ‘So Far Away’ , acknowledging the fans and The Rev . The song is accompanied by black and white footage of their former drummer on and off stage. 

Part 2: Hail to the King / Self Titled

The gravestones are removed during the intro to ‘Shepherd of Fire’ (except The Rev one). The animatronic King DeathBat emerges from the back of the stage on its throne. There’s an epic pyro for the chorus. Gates kicks off ‘Hail to the King’ with his lead, the screens showing historical kings and queens. The black and white images fade to white as the King DeathBat retreats and the band kicks straight into ‘Almost Easy’ . 

The screen changes to a giant organ for the intro to ‘Critical Acclaim ’, before it’s covered with headlines about the band from over the years. Shadows emerges dressed all in white with a t-shirt that reads “ Fuck Clones ”.  The strings return for the intro to ‘Afterlife’ . Acrobats take the stage as ‘A Little Piece of Heaven’ kicks off, the screens changing to a carnival theme. The band wear hats to suit the song’s mood, with Shadows in a ring masters jacket.

Part 3: The Stage

The skull of the stage raises with Shadows on top, the organ intro to ‘The Stage’ giving the band a breather. Wackerman’s riser also goes up. The band join him on the stage’s wings. The other parts of the stage are taken up by the performers, who now appear as marionettes, who act out some of the violent scenes from the song’s lyrics. They stay there for a brutal ‘Goddamn’ with the screens now zooming out to out of space with various animated galactic images. At animation depicts the end the interstellar DeathBat returns to earth and collides with the stage in a pyro explosion.

Part 4: City of Evil

The stage returns to normal with the screens now depicting neon lights and images of naked men and women, plus rock stars. ‘Beast and the Harlot’ kicks off this section with strobe lights. During the breakdown, the DeathBat emerges with a sword. They go straight into ‘Blinded by Chains’ with the DeathBat now trapped by chains. The DeathBat is dragged off stage by the performers. Shadows takes a seat at the front of the stage, with Vengeance joining him to sing the intro to ‘Seize the Day ’.

For the solo, Gates is lifted on the stage from the previous section. Drones are released with LED lights as the band finishes this part with ‘Bat Country’ . They form the DeathBat behind the band. The rear screen displays a first person perspective of a car driving out of the city and into the desert, eventually it crashes. 

Part 5: Life is But a Dream

The car crash stays on the screen as the words “ GAME OVER ” appear over the scene. It continues to flash as the band kick into ‘Game Over’ , with Shadows now in a grim reaper style cloak. The screens display dystopian images, with the performers taking the stage in similar cloaks and skull masks. They play a sequence from the album, through ‘Mattel’ , ‘Nobody’ and ‘Cosmic’ . Songs are accompanied by lasers, CO2 blasts and smoke, rather than pyro. Matt pauses to thank the crowd for their support when “ shit gets weird ” and the band play ‘We Love You’ .

At the “ Build ” section, random pyro starts to go off. As Matt does the final “ we love you ”, the screen at the top of the dome “collapses ” and flames appear to encase Wackerman’s drum kit as Gates avoids a falling lighting rig. Roadies run onto the stage to put out the flames as band members leave the stage. The centre of the DeathBat stage also appears to fall apart and drops beneath the rest of the stage. Smoke and debris cover the stage.

Part 6: Waking the Fallen

The centre of the stage rises again to reveal Wackerman on a new drum kit. The rest of the band join around him, all playing at the front of the stage. The first song is a secret song, chosen from AX7 rarities: ‘Carry On’ , ‘Mad Hatter’ , ‘Walk (Pantera cover ) , ‘Flash of the Blade ( Iron Maiden cover), ‘Crossroads’ , ‘Paranoid ( Black Sabbath cover)’. 

With the band in a more intimate mode, they play ‘Chapter Four’ and close with ‘Unholy Confessions’ , complete with B Stage confetti cannons. They wave and thank their fans for joining them on the journey so far.

What happened when Avenged Sevenfold headlined Download 2024

Avenged Sevenfold melt minds – and the sound system – at their successfully strange Download headline hat-trick.

It’s precisely 10:16pm, and the members of Avenged Sevenfold are bemusingly walking around the Apex Stage in total darkness, to the sound of a crowd singing DJ Ötzi’s Hey Baby at them. Given the Huntington Beach metallers’ fantastically out-there current streak, these words might not actually come as a massive surprise to you. But tonight, this isn’t part of their grand plan.

No, what’s actually happened is a complete sound system meltdown, right after the guitar solo during 2010 mega-single Nightmare (insert ‘electrifying’ joke of your choice). It’s a hiccup, for sure, but as Download 2024’s most seasoned headliners, it’s nothing that can’t soon be styled out – especially not when the answer to get things back on track is by launching straight into Unholy Confessions a couple of minutes later.

Indeed, Avenged Sevenfold are the biggest band here with the most Donington experience, but that doesn’t mean they’re ready to rest on any laurels just yet. While Friday and Saturday’s closing sets from Queens Of The Stone Age and Fall Out Boy respectively bring their own fresh feel, A7X are determined to out-do everyone and deliver one of the most unique sets of the entire weekend.

And that’s exactly what they do. The band’s hat-trick headliner begins not with your typical metal bang, but rather with frontman M. Shadows casually strolling out in a balaclava and Yeezus jumper, and having a sit-down as the acoustic intro to Game Over from last year’s Life Is But A Dream… album plays out. Intensely surveying those who haven’t bailed in favour of a much-needed hot shower, the singer and his bandmates take fans on the rest of this thrash-meets-Beatles thrill ride, before going straight into Mattel.

From the off, it’s evident this isn’t a setlist for everyone. Though of course peppered with huge singles like Afterlife, Hail To The King and Bat Country, Avenged are all about doing what they want tonight, celebrating 2023’s wild LP and translating their ultra-modern ideas into a live setting.

On that subject, LIBAD… lead single Nobody goes down best of all, sounding crushingly heavy with a brain-boggling light show to match. “We’re gonna play all kinds of shit for you,” M. teases. “We’re not sure yet, but this might be the only time we come here on this album cycle. We’re trying to come in 2025, but we don’t know yet…”

In case that doesn’t happen, Avenged do make sure to hit particular career touchstones elsewhere, from the poignant Fiction in memory of The Rev – “Gone but not forgotten…” says Shadows onstage – to disturbing fan-favourite A Little Piece Of Heaven and a triumphant The Stage.

At only 15 songs (but almost two hours) long, there are naturally some pretty massive omissions – Beast And The Harlot, Almost Easy and Shepherd Of Fire to name just three – but A7X haven’t made it this far by pandering to the masses, and for their hardcore contingent down the front it feels like a risk that pays off.

“We hope you had a beautiful night and a beautiful weekend,” M. grins during spectacularly cinematic closer Cosmic – again, not the conventional choice for some, but at this point, if you’re not all-in then you’ve probably made a dash for the exit to beat the Sunday-night traffic, anyway.

Whether Avenged Sevenfold are able to return to these shores next year remains to be seen, but in the meantime, this has been a total dream in every sense.
