. AXIS TRAVEL CENTRE   was established in July 1978 .We are registered in South Australia, as a business name, under Priority Portfolio Travel Pty Ltd:  ACN 007869123. We believe in our company motto “When professional advice and quality service matter most”  ©

We are proud of our Agency and Staff achievements as bestowed by our Industry peers and the Business community and our accreditations and credentials held since 1978.

Our SECURITY UMBRELLA covers you .

ATIA AFTA MEMO TO THE PUBLIC

Some secrets how we have survived and flourished since 1978? ?

Axis Travel Centre advisors are humans. We care, we listen, we understand , we absorb emotions, we use logic , we use common-sense and we apply empathy which are all assets that no amount of technology can emulate.

We provide realistic, honest, sound and sensible advice via our travel advisors who extract from decades of experience in travel that can easily save you significant expense, time and emotional strain, underscored with security and abiding by strict Australian Consumer Affairs, Fair trading and other Government standards in additional to International regulations and requirements.

WE represent our clients and the wider Travel community of consumers and agents in what we believe in-without fear or favour. Examples lately….

AXIS TRAVEL CENTRE second  submission to ACCC regarding Qantas and Emirates QF-EK merger

AXIS TRAVEL CENTRE first submission  to ACCC regarding Qantas and Emirates QF-EK merger  .

Since 1978 Axis Travel Centre has been assisting many “inbound” clients, but some clients may have received unapproved COVID vaccinations listed by the Australian Government TGA . {Therapeutic Goods Administration}. We will not place at risk our clients, staff, or our suppliers so we will continue to apply our policy of APPOINTMENTS ONLY for physical office visitations.

  • NO MASKS for Australian vaccinated clients.
  • MASKS WILL BE REQUIRED for International “inbound” clients with non-TGA approved vaccinations and any other unvaccinated clients

We protect a client’s most important travel assets, which are time, personal  experiences and money. Each of these asset’s are non-refundable, cannot be credited and are lost forever if dedicated care and travel expertise are not correctly applied .

We will not compromise our professional standards, services or your security.

We prefer to not accept a travel booking by creating a mindset of false promises, unexplained conditions or biased choices. We prefer to under Promise but over Deliver.

We pay our respects to Elders and ancestors who watch over us and guide the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. We also pay respect to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of all nations of our world and the continuation of their cultural, spiritual and educational practices, as we acknowledge their enduring connections to their respective Country, knowledge and stories.

YOUR  INVESTMENT .  OUR CREDENTIALS .OUR SERVICES:

We consider monies paid towards travel as a treasured lifestyle investment and not as only a cost because, if professionally planned, an investment in travel should be a return on your investment via memorable and priceless leisure travel thoughts or the closure of a business deal, creating successful memories and repeatable stories, embellished with friendships, videos, photos, or travel memorabilia.

The journey can start with Axis Travel Centre when you engage our professional services.

There can be a lot at stake in a travel booking, many times influenced by your preferences, your financial budget and your ultimate travel; aims. During the booking process, adjustments may be required because of your change of mind, your family influences or a variety of unforeseen external local or worldwide impacts that may need us to expertly advise, guide, assist, amend or totally revamp your travel components into a revised chronological order or, at worse, to urgently and efficiently evacuate you with your travelling companions.

In such circumstances mature experience and expert guidance absolutely overrides any price cost, with, hopefully, a reliable quality travel insurance claim permitted to cover expenses incurred.

Our agency database statistics have revealed that we receive over 83% of our clients via past loyal clients or new referrals with over 35% of our clients still booking with us for over 40 years, with us now assisting first, 2 nd and 3 rd generation families.

The words “ trust “ and “ wisdom ”  are often commented on by clients. Such qualities cannot be bought or traded and are priceless qualities that no amount of paid advertising or marketing can deliver especially when combined with our Axis CHECKLIST of services provided .

In the past few years, we have deliberately not invested in large-scale advertising or marketing campaigns .We decided to steer investments into direct client communications, assisting referred clients  , updating Agency and staff credentials, adding new client travel services and including free client booking protections .

The difference between a Travel Agency , a Travel Agent + a Travel Advisor ?

The word “travel agency” is the business name that contracts or employs humans. This terminology has changed in the past few years as the contracted or employed human, previously called a “ travel agent” was originally adopted when people went into a travel agency to only have their airline, cruise, bus or tour tickets written out.

The word “agent” creates an image that that person represents the suppliers and is working on their behalf whereas an “advisor” makes it clear that they work on behalf of clients with a dedicated personal passion applied to each booking.

Our travel advisors are curators and designers of travel, delivering compensable professional services, who link high-levels of technology with their advanced levels of travel expertise and experience with the “human-touch”, always acknowledging their required adherence to important legal accountabilities and responsibilities when clients engage their services.

  • Axis Travel Centre travel advisors offer respectful personal attention, applied business safety measures and security backed by our company and advisors’ professional credentials and experience. We do accept that we may not be the travel agency for travelers who are mostly concerned with focusing on the lowest prices and not concerned with our proven benefits or ongoing personalized attention, professional advice and securities. We will not compromise our quality of advice or professional services offered in order to secure a travel sale !

axis global travel

Axis Travel Centre contracts trusted “ travel advisors”  who add priceless value to each travel booking delivering to clients decades of experience, expertise, credentials and relevant travel options when travel arrangements are entrusted to them. They save clients significant expense, time and emotional strain, researching, comparing and booking relevant travel options whilst utilizing their influence via their established global connections with suppliers, which in good times can make special things happen. In tough times, these same contacts can also come to the rescue in many effective ways to navigate the complex and uncharted travel waters that travellers cannot do so by themselves and reduce complex burdens that can be thrown at travellers, especially after COVID19, when travel will become even more complicated in the future.

Travellers can expect new travel protocols, which will involve rulings about vaccinations, quarantine regulations, social distancing and mask wearing that could vary from one country to another. Those regulations can change at short notice and for all those reasons it makes sense to rely upon Axis Travel Centre travel advisors who will guide, advise, assist and deliver solutions if the need to amend, postpone, cancel or re-organize travel into a logical, legally acceptable and chronological order is required. A one-contact professional travel source.

REMEMBER that technology alone is not life. Technology cannot create relationships, listen to you, use empathy or have feelings. Spend your time with people, not with devices.

Things may go wrong with interrupted or cancelled travel components , COVID outbreaks,  weather conditions, strikes, Airline or supplier collapses, wars, pandemics, or other unforeseen incidents or dealing with fallible humans worldwide., all beyond your control or our control. This is when you need to have a contactable human on your side who has a depth of experience and contacts to rely upon.

Examples of some notable travel industry incidents that have affected clients, with Axis Travel Centre required to advise, guide, postpone, cancel, re-route ,rebook or evacuate clients and also negotiate with all suppliers and attending to travel insurance claims. This list does not include thousands of personal client based incidents that we have had to deal with since 1978.

From 1978 to March 2021, ,unfortunately. there has been over 460 Airline, Cruise, Resort ,Tour Company, Travel Supplier and Agency collapses, PLUS

  • 2023-2024 Middle East conflict-assistance, evacuations and humanitarian emergency travel rescues.
  • 2022-2023 Volcano interruptions to travel worldwide.
  • 2021-2022 Ukrainian/Russian conflict assisting Eastern Europe travel changes ad evacuations.

Add to this Government regime collapses in the Middle East ,Asia and South America , with over** 460 Airline, Cruise, Resort ,Tour Company, Travel Supplier and Agency collapses plus a continuous series of online data breaches, travel website rip-offs, Online Travel Booking site scams , we are kept busy assisting clients and other referred travellers, with no signs of abating.  [**As of January 2021]

Price is an intangible item that is long forgotten when consideration is given to clients receiving quality services like better value-added travel components , the security of monies being paid, receiving logical travel options via experienced human advice with the clarity in having booking options and conditions explained clearly. These are some of the important elements to be considered when investing in the overall price equation, especially if unforeseen circumstances occur. It is no good saving a few dollars but to receive substandard services, fake advice or travel arrangements that could have been advised, booked and issued in a better way !

We prefer to underPromise but overDeliver.

TIME and COST TRANSPARENCY: As with other professions, we value and respect both your “time” and our “time”.

Some professionals use their own liberal license to request payments for the time they allegedly spend on your file or their “service calls” or their “fees”  and usually either “ shock” you with the costs they demand or their lack of transparency or  they may even  “ surprise” you with their ongoing Invoices for costs incurred . We do not.

Our travel booking conditions and fees and those of relevant Airlines, Cruises, Hotels, Tours, Car rentals and other travel items are all accessible or pre-advised to you before commitments are made.

This transparency provides clarity and no “surprises” or “shocks”

RESPECTING TIME:

Wasting time , as many do such as waiting for airlines and supplier communications  is evident these days , as they place phone calls “on-hold” or use diverted and sometimes-unclear overseas-Call-Centre’s, asking for your travel details or personal data., paying little respect for your time and privacy .

We adopt internal KPI [Key Performance Indicators] levels that we adhere to in attending to phone calls, emails and texts with required our in-office physical appointment times relying upon communications via our professional human advisors and not handballed to a temporary order-taker, a telemarketer or relegated into cyberspace governed by some foreign software entity.

Examples of past client comments in what we have delivered can be read HERE .

Click TESTIMONIALS .

OUR OPINION, OUR ADVICE, OUR SERVICES but always considered as YOUR INVESTMENT:

There is a difference between us giving an opinion and giving advice.

Our travel advisors’ toolkit contains many quality elements, such as a specific skillset of computer keyboard languages that we use via our privy secured access into various Computer Reservation Systems (CRS) that uses a very specific keyboard language skillset, all-inaccessible to consumers. This skillset is complemented with our mature advice and decades of experience and expertise, with an additional benefit that we can enhance clients’’ travel experiences by sourcing extra advice and guidance from our long-term trusted external travel industry colleagues.

Travel is a very personal experience. No computer, anonymous website or cold-call phone service will ever replace human listening skills, the human touch, human logic, human empathy and human voices.

When to use or not use a Travel Agent? A Media quote, worth considering:

“If a travel agent cannot add “true value” to the travel equation for a client, then the client should reconsider using that travel agency or travel advisor and maybe that agency should not exist. This added “true value” should never be solely price based. This value can include such qualities as being able to deal with a trusted person, relying on that travel advisor to apply their professional expertise and experience to truthfully advise and manage travel arrangements or adding the tangible qualities of monetary securities with the highest levels of credentials and accreditations to deliver the best travel services, before, during and after travel is undertaken. If you also add the realistic savings made in saving time, reducing stress levels and the advisors ability to “deconfuse the confusion” © by offering logical travel options and an ability to explain complex conditions then the combination of all of these benefits are a validation that a professional travel advisor can add “true value” to the overall travel equation and is therefore a worthy investment.” © MN1978

WEBSITES +TOLL FREE NUMBERS + YOUR PRIVACY

We respect and understand that it is a client’s prerogative and own choice to research, trust and book travel where they wish. We can only provide common-sense facts to be considered. Although we have built and control our own Australian-based, secured and unbiased website www.axistravel.com.au we think it is critical that we comment factually on other Airline, Supplier, OTA [Online Travel Agent] websites and their toll-free links.

The Axis Travel Centre website does not accept or contain paid advertising placements. It is built purely as an informative, relevant and secured travel agency website for clients. It is updated weekly.

A.FEW.WEBSITE WARNINGS: Some websites/phone numbers can appear one day and disappear the next . When risking your data via websites or using toll-free phone numbers we suggest that you do all possible to minimize your exposure to risks when inputting data.

On websites , look for the prefix of https://  as a minimum criteria , as letter “s” denotes “secured”, also ensure that the website entity transacts monies into a traceable Australian Bank , also check if that website belongs to a company that is accredited with any professional travel industry association and investigate where the listed phone numbers and emails are geographically located . Their registered business name location is important as overseas-based travel entities need not assist or entertain any traveler complaints, as they do not need to adhere to any Australian Government legality or Consumer Affairs complaints. Check the quality of their response times and the quality of their answers to your questions, hopefully with them offering 24 x 7 English speaking support in case of need.

If negative issues erupt, the engaging of lawyers is usually a worthless option in time, effort, and monies with zero or limited chance of compensation.

They may have your monies and/or personal data, and once misused, the nightmare begins!

Most review sites, including TripAdvisor and blogsites are anonymous or you cannot verify 100% their authenticity or honesty. You could be reading unsubstantiated fake facts or fake news or fake commentary placed by the owners, their competitors, bribed consumers or a series of manipulated comments invented by computer algebraic software that infiltrates such review sites with biased commentary and photo shopped images with an ability to also misuse your data.

  • Consider relying upon the words of your trusted family, friends, travel advisor or other humans before you rely upon electronic media commentary or inexperienced sales staff.
  • Click Print MEDIA to read factual reports and consumer issues and refer to Australian Government https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/ for more info.

“OTA” WEBSITES + TOLLFREE PHONE NUMBERS: An “OTA” is denoted as an O nline T ravel A gent. They are engineered order takers with very limited products, hardly any unbiased choices with  zero human rapport.

  • Axis Travel Centre travel advisors are not order takers.

Most OTA’s have deliberately designed and built their research and booking system platforms to save bricks and mortar , rental and labour costs , able to be devoid of human contacts or responsive communication sources, offering very limited or zero travel-planning flexibilities. They tend to offer and book only what the OTA wants to offer each traveller, whether it is the correct product or not; as many OTA’s need not adhere to specific standards. They use attractive marketing techniques to attract travellers but most of their travel deals can be easily matched and sometimes exceeded when we breakdown and provide other value-added travel options.

  • Many overseas-based OTA operations via websites or toll-free phone numbers employ foreign labour and are not obliged to subscribe to or abide by strict Australian Government legal standards or Travel Industry professional accreditations for staff or their company. Many also divert funds into overseas bank accounts with many travellers unable to obtain detailed explanations of travel component inclusions, booking conditions and fees and possibly an even harder task to amend or add to travel arrangements, secure refunds or receive assistance in case of emergencies or an evacuation. You are on your own.

The Axis Travel Centre Website :   Researching or booking travel via the Axis Travel Centre website or direct with our professional human travel advisors ensures that the highest levels of accreditations and securities required by us via  ATIA (AFTA), ATAS, CLIA, IATA, ETG, ACCC, ASIC and other strict Australian Government regulations are all adhered to , in addition to our unique free benefits of “ SECURITY UMBRELLA © Protection Package

How to Find the Right International Travel Insurance Company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

  • Southeast Asian destinations take top ranks in Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2024

Southeast Asia has once again emerged as the world’s leading Muslim tourist destination in the latest edition of the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), with Indonesia and Malaysia tied for the top spot among 145 destinations in the 2024 study. Meanwhile, Singapore has consistently led among Non-Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC 1 ) destinations for the ninth consecutive year, underscoring its unwavering dedication to cater to Muslim travelers by widespread availability of Halal food, prayer facilities, suitable airport amenities, and Muslim-friendly accommodation.

According to the report, the Muslim travel market is set for a significant uptick this year, with global international arrivals potentially reaching up to 168 million, exceeding pre-pandemic levels by as much as 5 percent. This growth in volume highlights the rising prominence of the segment, driven by demographic and economic expansion, cultural and Halal tourism development, and technological advancements that enable more personalized travel experiences for Muslim travelers, such as apps that locate Halal food outlets, Qibla directions, and prayer timings. The impact of artificial intelligence is also helping further customize travel experiences to simplify travel logistics while adhering to faith traditions.

Retaining their joint top position as the leading OIC 2 destinations for Muslim travelers for the 2 nd consecutive year, Indonesia and Malaysia also scored favorably on ease of entry and quality of tourism infrastructure for both Muslim and non-Muslim travelers.

Thailand maintained its position in the top five non-OIC destinations, owing to efforts towards promoting Halal tourism like increasing Halal food availability, integration of Muslim-friendly amenities at tourist spots, and enhanced accommodation and dining options for Muslim travelers.

Meanwhile, the Philippines recorded an increase in its score on communications compared to 2023. Among non-OIC destinations, the Philippines has steadily increased its appeal to Muslim tourists by strategically developing their Halal Tourism portfolio, enhancing halal accreditation of hotels and restaurants, and conducting Halal awareness orientations. This effort builds on their achievement of winning the Emerging Muslim-friendly Destination of the Year award in last year’s Halal in Travel Global Summit, based on GMTI 2023 results.

GMTI, now in its ninth year, analyzes data across 145 destinations using the ACES framework, built around metrics on Access, Communication, Environment, and Services. Over time, the criteria have evolved to keep pace with the changing needs of Muslim travelers. This year, new metrics on availability of facilities and services for travelers with disabilities were added to the model.

“It is encouraging to see that the travel sectors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore not only maintained their rankings in this year's GMTI, but also improved their individual scores. This reflects a broader trend of increased consideration for Muslim travelers, with average scores across the Index rising by 10 percent,” said Fazal Bahardeen, Founder & CEO, CrescentRating. Mr. Bahardeen also added: “It is also positive to see the Philippines continue to improve its score, which demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Department of Tourism to bolstering Muslim-friendly tourism and advancing the destination's appeal. As Muslim travel continues to gain momentum, the GMTI 2024 report provides invaluable insights for stakeholders across the travel and tourism sector to leverage the growing Muslim travel market.”

Safdar Khan, division president, Southeast Asia, Mastercard, said: “According to the latest report from the Mastercard Economics Institute (MEI) ,  travelers from and to Southeast Asia are becoming increasingly focused on getting the best value from their trips to ensure the most unforgettable experiences, a shift echoed in the rapidly growing global Halal tourism industry. At the same time, technology is helping this demographic to travel in ways that meet their unique needs, from AI-powered hyper-personalized experiences to Mastercard’s own enablement of easy and secure cross-border payments. Together this heralds a new level of convenience for Muslim travelers and unlocks a new era of growth and profitability for travel operators. Mastercard’s long-running collaboration with CrescentRating is both a testament to the strength of the partnership and the ongoing importance of understanding and serving Muslim travelers.”

1 Non-OIC countries are those that are not members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. These countries may have significant Muslim populations or cater to Muslim travelers but are not officially part of the OIC.

2 The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization consisting of 57 member states, which are primarily Muslim-majority countries. The OIC aims to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

After falling by 75 percent in 2020, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. Domestic travel is expected to grow 3 percent annually and reach 19 billion lodging nights per year by 2030. 1 Unless otherwise noted, the source for all data and projections is Oxford Economics. Over the same time frame, international travel should likewise ramp up to its historical average of nine billion nights. Spending on travel is expected to follow a similar trajectory, with an estimated $8.6 trillion in traveler outlays in 2024, representing roughly 9 percent of this year’s global GDP.

About the authors

This article is a collaborative effort by Caroline Tufft , Margaux Constantin , Matteo Pacca , and Ryan Mann , with Ivan Gladstone and Jasperina de Vries, representing views from McKinsey’s Travel, Logistics & Infrastructure Practice.

There’s no doubt people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go? We developed a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030. For the purposes of this report, we have divided the world into four regions—the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa.

Our analysis identifies three major themes for industry stakeholders to consider:

  • The bulk of travel spending is close to home. Stakeholders should ensure they capture the full potential of domestic travel before shifting their focus to international travelers. And they should start with international travelers who visit nearby countries—as intraregional trips represent the largest travel segment after domestic trips.
  • Source markets are shifting. Although established source markets continue to anchor global travel, Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are all becoming fast-growing sources of outbound tourism.
  • The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine. Alongside enduring favorites, places that weren’t on many tourists’ maps are finding clever ways to lure international travelers and establish themselves as desirable destinations.

The bulk of travel spending is close to home

International travel might feel more glamorous, but tourism players should not forget that domestic travel still represents the bulk of the market, accounting for 75 percent of global travel spending (Exhibit 1). Domestic travel recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic faster than international travel, as is typical coming out of downturns. And although there has been a recent boom in “revenge travel,” with travelers prioritizing international trips that were delayed by the pandemic, a return to prepandemic norms, in which domestic travel represents 70 percent of spending, is expected by 2030.

The United States is the world’s largest domestic travel market at $1 trillion in annual spending. Sixty-eight percent of all trips that start in the United States remain within its borders. Domestic demand has softened slightly, as American travelers return abroad. 2 Dawit Habtemariam, “Domestic U.S. tourism growth levels off as Americans head overseas,” Skift, August 18, 2023. But tourism players with the right offerings are still thriving: five national parks broke attendance records in 2023 (including Joshua Tree National Park, which capitalized on growing interest from stargazers indulging in “dark sky” tourism 3 Scott McConkey, “5 national parks set attendance records in 2023, and the reasons may surprise you,” Wealth of Geeks, April 16, 2024. ).

China’s $744 billion domestic travel market is currently the world’s second largest. Chinese travelers spent the pandemic learning to appreciate the diversity of experiences on offer within their own country. Even as borders open back up, Chinese travelers are staying close to home. And domestic destinations are benefiting: for example, Changchun (home to the Changchun Ice and Snow Festival) realized 160 percent year-on-year growth in visitors in 2023. 4 Shi Xiaoji, “Why don’t Chinese people like to travel abroad anymore? The global tourism industry has lost 900 billion yuan. What is the situation?,” NetEase, February 12, 2024. In 2024, domestic travel during Lunar New Year exceeded prepandemic levels by 19 percent.

China’s domestic travel market is expected to grow 12 percent annually and overtake the United States’ to become the world’s largest by 2030. Hotel construction reflects this expectation: 30 percent of the global hotel construction pipeline is currently concentrated in China. The pipeline is heavily skewed toward luxury properties, with more than twice as many luxury hotels under construction in China as in the United States.

India, currently the world’s sixth-largest domestic travel market by spending, is another thriving area for domestic travel. With the subcontinent’s growing middle class powering travel spending growth of roughly 9 percent per year, India’s domestic market could overtake Japan’s and Mexico’s to become the world’s fourth largest by 2030. Domestic air passenger traffic in India is projected to double by 2030, 5 Murali Krishnan, “Can India’s airports cope with rapid passenger growth?,” Deutsche Welle, February 7, 2024. boosted in part by a state-subsidized initiative that aims to connect underserved domestic airports. 6 “India is seeing a massive aviation boom,” Economist , November 23, 2023.

When travelers do go abroad, they often stay close to home (Exhibit 2).

Europe and Asia, in particular, demonstrate strong and growing intraregional travel markets.

Recognizing this general trend, stakeholders have been funneling investment toward regional tourism destinations. An Emirati wealth fund, for instance, has announced its intent to invest roughly $35 billion into established hospitality properties and development opportunities in Egypt. 7 Michael Gunn and Mirette Magdy, “UAE’s $35 billion Egypt deal marks Gulf powers’ buying spree,” Bloomberg, April 27, 2024.

Europe has long played host to a high share of intraregional travel. Seventy percent of its travelers’ international trips stay within the region. Europe’s most popular destinations for intraregional travelers are perennial warm-weather favorites—Spain (18 percent), Italy (10 percent), and France (8 percent)—with limited change to these preferences expected between now and 2030.

Despite longer travel distances between Asian countries, Asia’s intraregional travel market is beginning to resemble Europe’s. Intraregional travel currently accounts for about 60 percent of international trips in Asia—a share expected to climb to 64 percent by 2030. As in Europe in past decades, Asian intraregional travel is benefiting from diminishing visa barriers and the development of a low-cost, regional flight network.

Thailand is projected to enjoy continued, growing popularity with Asian travelers. Thailand waived visa requirements for Chinese tourists in 2023 and plans to do the same for Indian tourists starting in 2024. It has aggressively targeted the fast-growing Indian traveler segment, launching more than 50 marketing campaigns directed at Indians over the past decade. The investment may be paying off: Bangkok recently overtook Dubai as the most popular city destination for Indian tourists. 8 “Bangkok overtakes Dubai as top destination for Indians post visa relaxation, reveals Agoda,” PR Newswire, January 18, 2024.

A McKinsey ConsumerWise survey on consumer sentiment, conducted in February 2024, suggests that Chinese travelers are also exhibiting high interest in international travel, with 36 percent of survey respondents indicating that they intend to spend more on international travel in the next three months. 9 Daniel Zipser, “ China brief: Consumers are spending again (outside of China) ,” McKinsey, April 8, 2024. Much of this interest is directed toward regional destinations such as Southeast Asia and Japan, with interest in travel to Europe down from previous years. 10 Guang Chen, Zi Chen, Steve Saxon, and Jackey Yu, “ Outlook for China tourism 2023: Light at the end of the tunnel ,” McKinsey, May 9, 2023.

Given travelers’ preference for proximity, how can tourism stakeholders further capitalize on domestic and intraregional travel demand? Here are a few strategies:

  • Craft offerings that encourage domestic tourists to rediscover local gems. Destinations, hotels, and transportation providers can encourage domestic tourists to integrate lesser-known cultural landmarks into their trips to visit friends and relatives. In France, the upscale hotel chain Relais & Châteaux markets historic properties that lie far from classic tourist sights—such as Château Saint-Jean in rural Auvergne—as a welcome escape from the bustle of Paris. In Mexico, the Pueblos Mágicos program has successfully boosted domestic tourist visits to a set of “magical towns” that showcase Mexican heritage.
  • Fold one-off domestic destinations into fuller itineraries. Route 66 in the United States is a classic road trip pathway, which spurs visits to attractions all along the highway’s length. Tourism stakeholders can collaborate to create similar types of domestic itineraries around the world. For instance, Mexico has expanded on its Pueblos Mágicos concept by branding coordinated visits to multiple villages as “magical routes.” In France, local tourism boards and vineyards have collaborated to promote bucket list “wine routes” around the country.
  • Make crossing borders into neighboring countries seamless. Removing logistical barriers to travel can nudge tourists to upgrade a one-off trip to a single attraction into a bucket list journey across multiple, less-trodden destinations. In Africa, for example, Ethiopian Airlines is facilitating cross-border travel to major regional tourist sites through improved air connectivity. In Asia, Thailand has announced its intent to create a joint visa easing travel among Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Source markets are shifting

The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, China, and France remain the world’s five largest sources of travelers, in that order. These countries collectively accounted for 38 percent of international travel spending in 2023 and are expected to remain the top five source markets through 2030. But interest in travel is blossoming in other parts of the world—causing a shift in the balance of outbound travel flows (Exhibit 3).

North Americans’ travel spending is projected to hold steady at roughly 3 percent annual growth. US consumers voice growing concerns about inflation, and the most cost-constrained traveler segments are reducing travel, which is affecting ultra-low-cost airlines and budget hotels. Most travelers, however, plan to continue traveling: McKinsey research suggests that American consumers rank international and domestic travel as their highest-priority areas for discretionary spending. Instead of canceling their trips, these consumers are adapting their behavior by traveling during off-peak periods or booking travel further in advance. Travel spending by Europeans paints a slightly rosier picture, with roughly 5 percent projected annual growth. Meanwhile, the projected 12 percent annual growth in Chinese travelers’ spending should anchor substantial increases in travel spending across Northeast Asia.

Alongside these enduring traveler segments, new groups of travelers are emerging. Eastern Europe, India, and Southeast Asia are still comparatively small source markets, but they are developing fast-growing pools of first-time tourists (Exhibit 4).

India’s breakneck GDP growth of 6 percent year over year is bolstering a new generation of travelers, 11 Benjamin Laker, “India will grow to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027,” Forbes , February 23, 2024. resulting in a projected annual growth in travel spending of 9 percent between now and 2030. Indian air carriers and lodging companies are making substantial investments to meet projected demand. Budget airline IndiGo placed the largest aircraft order in commercial aviation history in 2023, when it pledged to buy 500 Airbus A320 planes 12 Anna Cooban, “Biggest plane deal in history: Airbus clinches massive order from India’s IndiGo,” CNN, June 19, 2023. ; that same week, Air India nearly equaled IndiGo’s order size with purchase agreements for 250 Airbus and 220 Boeing jets. IndiGo later added an order for 30 additional Airbus A350 planes, well suited to serving both domestic and international routes. 13 “Airbus confirms IndiGo's A350 aircraft order,” Economic Times , May 6, 2024. The Indian Hotels Company Limited is ramping up its hotel pipeline, aiming to open two new hotels per month in the near future. International players are not sitting on the sidelines: seven hotel chains are launching new brands in India in 2024, 14 Peden Doma Bhutia, “Indian Hotels expansion plans: 2 new brands launching, 2 hotels opening every month,” Skift, February 2, 2024. including Marriott’s first Moxy- and Tribute-branded hotels in India and entrants from Hilton’s Curio and Tapestry brands. 15 Forum Gandhi, “Check-in frenzy: International hotel giants unleash fresh brands in India’s booming hospitality landscape,” Hindu Businessline , February 13, 2024. Development focus has shifted away from major metropolises such as Mumbai and Delhi and toward fast-developing, smaller cities such as Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Southeast Asian travel spending is projected to grow at roughly 7 percent per year. Pockets of particularly high growth exist in Cambodia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. To capitalize on this blossoming source market, neighboring countries are rolling out attractive visa arrangements: for example, China has agreed to reciprocal visa waivers for short-term travelers from Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. 16 Julienna Law, “China launches ‘visa-free era’ with Southeast Asia. Will travel retail boom?,” Jing Daily , January 30, 2024.

Travel spending by Eastern Europeans is expected to grow at 7 percent per year until 2030—two percentage points higher than spending by Western Europeans. Areas of especially high growth include the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland, where middle-class travelers are increasingly venturing farther afield. Major tourism players, including the TUI Group, have tapped into these new source markets by offering charter flights to warm-weather destinations such as Egypt. 17 Hildbrandt von Klaus, “TUI develops Czech Republic as a new source market,” FVW, December 22, 2023.

Although the number of travelers from these new source markets is growing, their purchasing power remains relatively limited. Compared with Western European travelers (who average $159 per night in total travel spending), South Asians spend 20 percent less, Eastern Europeans spend 40 percent less, and Southeast Asians spend 55 percent less. Only 3 percent of the current Asian hotel construction pipeline caters to economy travelers, suggesting a potential supply gap of rooms that could appeal to budget-constrained tourists.

While acknowledging that historical source markets will continue to constitute the bulk of travel spending, tourism players can consider actions such as these to capitalize on growing travel demand from newer markets:

  • Reduce obstacles to travel. Countries can look for ways to strategically invest in simplifying travel for visitors from growing source markets. In 2017, for example, Azerbaijan introduced express processing of electronic visas for Indian visitors; annual arrivals from India increased fivefold in two years. Requirements regarding passport photocopies or in-person check-ins can similarly be assessed with an eye toward reducing red tape for travelers.
  • Use culturally relevant marketing channels to reach new demographics. Unique, thoughtful marketing strategies can help destinations place themselves on first-time travelers’ bucket lists. For example, after the release of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara , a popular Bollywood movie shot in Spain with support from the Spanish Ministry of Tourism, Indian tourism to Spain increased by 65 percent. 18 “ Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara part of syllabus in Spain colleges,” India Today , June 6, 2004.
  • Give new travelers the tech they expect. Travelers from newer source markets often have access to tech-forward travel offerings. For example, Indian travelers can travel anywhere within their country without physical identification, thanks to the Digi Yatra app. The Southeast Asian rideshare app Grab has several helpful travel features that competitors lack, such as automated menu translation and currency conversion. Tourism stakeholders should consider how to adapt to the tech expectations of newer travelers, integrating relevant offerings that ease journeys.
  • Create vibrant experiences tailored to different price points. Crafting lower-budget offerings for more cost-constrained travelers doesn’t need to result in giving them a subpar experience. Capsule hotels, in which guests sleep in small cubbies, began as a response to the high cost of accommodations in Japan, but they have become an attraction in their own right—appearing on many must-do lists. 19 Philip Tang, “24 of the best experiences in Japan,” Lonely Planet, March 23, 2024.

The places you’ll go: The destinations of the future may not be the ones you imagine

The world’s top ten destination countries (the United States, Spain, China, France, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Italy, Thailand, Japan, and India, in that order) currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including for domestic travel. But some new locales are gaining traction (Exhibit 5).

A significant number of travelers are expanding their horizons, booking journeys to less visited countries that are near to old standbys. For instance, Laos and Malaysia, which both border Thailand—an established destination that is home to Bangkok, the world’s most visited city 20 Katherine LaGrave, “This is the world’s most visited city,” AFAR , January 31, 2024. —are up a respective 20 percent and 17 percent, respectively, in year-over-year international travel spending.

The world’s top ten destination countries currently receive 45 percent of all travel spending, including domestic-travel spending. But some new locales are gaining traction.

Several other countries that have crafted thoughtful tourism demand generation strategies—such as Peru, the Philippines, Rwanda, and Vietnam—are also expected to reap benefits in the coming years. Vietnam logged a remarkable 40 percent increase in tourism spending in the five years before the pandemic. Postpandemic, it has rebounded in part by waiving visa requirements for European travelers (while indicating intent to offer similar exemptions in the future for Chinese and Indian travelers). 21 Ashvita Singh, “Vietnam looks to offer visa-free entry to Indians: India report,” Skift, November 20, 2023. The Philippines has made a concerted effort to shift its sun-and-beach branding toward a more well-rounded image, replacing its long-standing “It’s more fun in the Philippines” tourism slogan with “Love the Philippines.” Peru is highlighting less visited archeological sites while also marketing itself as a top-notch culinary destination through the promotion of Peruvian restaurants abroad. Rwanda is investing in infrastructure to become a major African transit hub, facilitated by Qatar Airways’ purchase of a 60 percent stake in the country’s major airport. 22 Dylan Cresswell, “Rwanda plots ambitious tourism recovery,” African Business , July 28, 2022. Rwanda has also successfully capitalized on sustainable tourism: by charging $1,500 per gorilla trekking permit, for instance, it has maximized revenue while reducing environmental impact.

Tourism players might consider taking some of these actions to lure tourists to less familiar destinations:

  • Collaborate across the tourism ecosystem. Promotion is not solely the domain of destination marketing organizations. Accommodation, transportation, and experience providers can also play important roles. In Singapore, for instance, the luxury resort Marina Bay Sands partners extensively with Singapore Airlines and the Singapore Tourism Board to offer compelling tourism offerings. Past collaborations have included flight and stay packages built around culinary festivals and a Lunar New Year drone show. 23 “Singapore Tourism Board, Marina Bay Sands & UOB partner to enliven Marina Bay precinct,” Singapore Tourism Board news release, January 25, 2024.
  • Use infrastructure linkage to promote new destinations. By extending route options, transportation providers can encourage visitors to create itineraries that combine familiar destinations with new attractions. In Asia, Thailand’s tourism authority has attempted to nudge visitors away from the most heavily trafficked parts of the country, such as Bangkok and Phuket, and toward less popular destinations.
  • Deploy social media to reach different demographics. Innovative social media campaigns can help put a destination on the map. Australia launched its “Ruby the kangaroo” campaign in China to coincide with the return of postpandemic air capacity between the two places. A video adapted for Chinese context (with appropriate gestures and a hashtag in Mandarin) garnered more than 20 million views in a single day on one of China’s largest social media platforms. 24 Nicole Gong, “Can Ruby the kangaroo bring Chinese tourists hopping back to Australia?,” SBS, June 5, 2023.
  • Embrace unknown status. “Off the beaten path” messaging can appeal to widely traveled tourists seeking fresh experiences. Saudi Arabia’s “#WhereInTheWorld” campaign promoted the country’s tourist spots by acknowledging that they are less familiar to travelers, using a series of images that compared these spots with better-known destinations.

As tourism stakeholders look to the future, they can take steps to ensure that they continue to delight existing travelers while also embracing new ones. Domestic and intraregional tourism remain major opportunities—catering to local tourists’ preferences while building infrastructure that makes travel more seamless within a region could help capture them. Creative collaboration among tourism stakeholders can help put lesser-known destinations on the map. Travel tides are shifting. Expertly navigating these currents could yield rich rewards.

Taylor Swift catches a lot of heat over jet travel. Here's her actual impact

H ow did Taylor Swift become a lightning rod in the debate over carbon dioxide emissions, and just how much does her private jet contribute to global warming?

The Eras Tour superstar is known for boosting economies, being taught at universities like Harvard , rerecording her music and breaking records with new album releases including "The Tortured Poets Department." She has also gained attention for flying her private jet (she sold her second one) around the world for concert stops, to do business and meet with friends in New York, rehearse in Los Angeles, see her family in Nashville and visit her boyfriend Travis Kelce in Kansas City, Missouri.

Conversation began in 2022

In the summer of 2022, Kylie Jenner posted a photo (that's since been deleted) of her and Travis Scott's private planes with the caption, “You wanna take mine or yours?” The backlash led the Yard , a content and public relations firm, to publish a study of which celebrities produced the most private jet emissions that year. The publication put Miss Americana as the top of the list.

The Yard has added a disclaimer to the top of the study that reads in part: "Following the release of our data, Rolling Stone contacted each of the celebrities' representatives for comment. Taylor Swift's representative said the following: 'Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals. To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect.'"

The jet tracking student

Amid the hype in 2022, a student studying information technology at University of Central Florida (UCF) started to track Swift's two jets. Jack Sweeney set up an automated system that posted updates when the billionaire's private planes departed and landed. His account took off during Swift's trips to NFL games as fans checked to see if she would attend to root on the Kansas City Chiefs .

The increased attention outraged Swifties who said Sweeney invaded the tortured poet's privacy and posed a security threat .

"It's all public record, you have this information at your fingertips," he says over Zoom. "There's an interest by fans, but others are upset. They think I'm stalking (Swift) when I'm just sharing public information."

His fascination with tracking planes began during the coronavirus pandemic in 2021. Sweeney looked into Elon Musk's planes and posted information about his jets. At one point, he says, Musk offered him $5,000 to shut down the X/Twitter account. The UCF student talked to a journalist instead, and the deal was off the table.

Musk, the owner of X/Twitter, banned Sweeney's accounts. With his Instagram account garnering close to 100,000 followers last winter, Meta also pulled the plug.

Swift's team sent Sweeney two cease-and-desist letters saying the tracking was endangering the singer and a "life-or-death matter." The student hired a lawyer and after releasing a public letter and doing some interviews , the back-and-forth grew cold.

When asked about security, the Sweeney says, "Other people have done a similar type of thing where they're posting about her planes. When she flew to Brazil, the news was livestreaming at the airport. If my tracking goes away, there's still going to be stuff like that, and she travels with a security team. The airport is one of the most secure places."

Swift sold one of her two private jets at the beginning of the year. An animation shows the 2023 trips of Swift's two jets that added up to 178,000 miles, emitting 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide. The majority of those flights were to Los Angles, New York, Nashville and concert stops for the 2023 Eras Tour .

If you search for lists of top carbon-emitting celebrities, there are conflicting reports. MyClimate ranked a list of celebrities in 2023 by their carbon emissions and didn't put the Eras Tour singer in the top 20 , giving Travis Scott, Kim Kardashian and Elon Musk the highest ratings.

Swift's impact on the environment

Payless Power did a conservative prediction of Swift's jet travel for 2024 including her 86 shows in 27 Asian, Australian, European and North American cities.

"The goal of the study was to look into renewable energy," says Adi Sachdeva, a project manager with Payless Power. "Her tour is one of the biggest tours that have ever existed."

Using data from the Myclimate Carbon Tracker, the Texas-based company created a report projecting the jet's carbon emissions, not including any detours the singer may make between stops.

They noted Swift will fly an estimated 43,688 kilometers and emit 511,154 kilograms of CO2 for the Eras Tour. To put this into perspective, it's the equivalent of driving 1,307,311 miles in a gasoline-powered passenger vehicle. It's also equivalent to the emissions made from 67 households in an entire year.

Although this may seem like a lot for the singer conducting a record-breaking tour across the world, the report states her 2024 travel still doesn't come close to the top celebrity emitters of 2023: Travis Scott (6.06 million kilograms of CO2), Kim Kardashian (5.86 million) and Elon Musk (4.56 million).

"We wanted to make comparisons to individuals, in general," Sachdeva says. "A lot of times you'll see these large numbers online of a private jet but without seeing what that means, people will go with the numbers that seem very large without knowing their own emissions."

An environmentalist weighs in

Nick Loris, the vice president of public policy for C3 Solutions , a conservative climate coalition looking to improve energy abundance and energy affordability, helps to put Swift's jet-setting impact into perspective.

"While aviation is important and private aviation is a pretty high contributor to the industry, it's still a relatively small percentage of overall global greenhouse gas emissions," he says. "Some of the top emissions are caused by the burning of fossil fuels for electricity, heat and transportation, so coal, oil and to a lesser extent natural gas. Buildings use a lot of energy, and we primarily use gasoline and diesel to get around. Industry and agriculture are other fairly big contributors.”

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, aircraft accounts for 9% of carbon-related emissions in the United States. Private jets produce at least 10 times more emissions than commercial flights per passenger.

Loris notes the reality is Swift can't fly commercial. It would lead to a surfeit of issues with logistics and security; consider the circle of security guards that surround her on red carpets.

So what are the solutions?

Loris says Swift's overall impact to emissions, in 2022, was about 0.000000225% after dividing her emissions, 8,300 metric tons, by global greenhouse gas emissions of 36.8 gigatons. Her percentage for 2023 and 2024 may be slightly higher with her tour travel.

Tree Paine, Swift's publicist, told Bloomberg News in 2023 the singer-songwriter purchased more than double the credits needed to offset all her travel .

"There are a few challenges with carbon credits," Loris says. "There are a lot of good activities that result from carbon offset projects, things like reforestation projects, different types of direct air capture technologies or investments in renewable power. The challenge is there are also a lot of junk carbon offsets where the project may have been built anyway and therefore there was no additional reduction in emissions. It's also important that carbon offset projects are measurable and durable. Let's say you purchased carbon offsets for a reforestation project in California, and then all of those burn up in a forest wildfire. That would release pollution and CO2 into the atmosphere and undo the carbon offset."

Loris says with all the increased attention, the singer could become a vocal advocate for jet-setting solutions and an investor in new and innovative technology such as sustainable aviation fuels or direct air capture (essentially a carbon-sucking vacuum).

Swift is on the European leg of the Eras Tour . She has shows in 15 more cities across the continent before heading to North America in the fall.

U.S. Seeks to Join Forces With Europe to Combat Excess Chinese Goods

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen warned that China’s industrial strategy posed a global threat that requires a united response.

  • Share full article

A close-up shot of Janet Yellen during a hearing.

By Alan Rappeport and Liz Alderman

Alan Rappeport is traveling with Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen in Germany and Italy this week. Liz Alderman is the chief European business correspondent.

Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said on Tuesday that the United States and Europe needed to work together to push back against China’s excess industrial capacity, warning that a wave of cheap Chinese exports represents a grave threat to the global economy.

Ms. Yellen’s remarks, delivered during a speech in Germany, highlighted what is expected to be a central topic of discussion when the Group of 7 finance ministers meet in Italy this week.

“China’s industrial policy may seem remote as we sit here in this room, but if we do not respond strategically and in a united way, the viability of businesses in both our countries and around the world could be at risk,” Ms. Yellen said at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, where she received an honorary doctoral degree.

China’s excessive production of green energy technology has become a pressing trans-Atlantic concern in recent months. Officials in President Biden’s administration have grown increasingly worried that his efforts to finance domestic manufacturing of clean energy and other next-generation technologies will be undercut by China, which is churning out steel, electric cars and solar panels at a rapid clip.

The Biden administration is now looking to Europe to help the developed world prevent the kind of China shock of the early 2000s, which helped decimate manufacturing in exchange for cheap goods. Last week, Mr. Biden increased tariffs on some Chinese imports, including levying a 100 percent tax on electric vehicles. He also formally left in place levies on more than $300 billion worth of Chinese goods that President Donald J. Trump had imposed.

The United States hopes that a united front will convince China that its largest trading partners are prepared to erect trade barriers that will prevent Chinese electric vehicles, batteries and panels from dominating Western markets.

Ms. Yellen emphasized on Tuesday that the United States was not trying to carry out an anti-China policy, but said China’s actions posed a threat to the global economy that warranted a coordinated response.

She pointed to China’s push to dominate clean energy technology and other sectors, saying that ambition “could also prevent countries around the world, including emerging markets, from building the industries that could power their growth.”

The trend toward protectionist policies is likely to become another point of contention between China and the world’s most advanced economies. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, derided Mr. Biden’s decision to impose new tariffs on Chinese goods last week as a “political maneuver.”

“We hope the U.S. can take a positive view of China’s development and stop using overcapacity as an excuse for trade protectionism,” Mr. Liu said.

The new U.S. tariffs could put additional pressure on Europe to erect trade barriers of its own to prevent China from redirecting more of its exports there. Europe’s officials are already considering additional levies on Chinese cars, which pose a particular threat to Germany.

About 37 percent of all electric vehicle imports to Europe are produced in China, including Chinese brands and ones made by Tesla and German automakers with plants there. Europe is the world’s second-biggest E.V. market, and imports there skyrocketed last year to $11.5 billion, from $1.6 billion in 2020.

The European Commission is investigating whether Chinese state subsidies intended to help the country’s companies make cheap cars are damaging Europe’s auto industry. The sector provides nearly 14 million direct and indirect jobs in Europe, and the six million cars that it exported last year generated a trade surplus of more than 100 billion euros.

Europe’s investigation could result in preliminary duties on Chinese electric vehicle imports as soon as July, though any tariffs are likely to be far lower than the 100 percent imposed by the Biden administration. But unlike Europe, which is already importing cars from China, the United States has erected several barriers to prevent Chinese E.V.s from coming to its shores.

Europe’s investigation into China’s subsidies and whether they merit tariffs has aggravated a political divide. Some countries, such as Germany, which is Europe’s biggest maker of electric cars, have been against an investigation. German officials are wary of pressing penalties that might incite Beijing to shut out German carmakers such as BMW and Volkswagen.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a speech in Stockholm last week, “We should not forget: European manufacturers, and also some American ones, are successful on the Chinese market and also sell a lot of vehicles that are produced in Europe to China.” He added that at least half of electric vehicles imported to Europe from China were Western brands.

Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission president, has been pushing for “de-risking” Europe’s relationship with China. Her approach is backed by President Emmanuel Macron of France, who hosted his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, this month and has urged Brussels to step up protection against what his administration sees as unfair Chinese competition.

The Brussels investigation has focused less on whether China is dumping large numbers of cars into Europe and more on how subsidies have allowed E.V.s made by BYD, Geely and SAIC, the three biggest Chinese E.V. makers, to offer cut-rate prices. The Chinese government has criticized the European Union for not investigating Western brands with factories in China — including Tesla, which exports more E.V.s from China to the European Union than any other producer.

The Rhodium Group , an independent think tank that focuses on China, said that to compensate for Chinese state subsidies, the European Commission would have to impose duties of up to 50 percent on Chinese E.V.s. But the group suggested that such a move would be unlikely in Europe unless officials took a more “drastic” review of World Trade Organization rules, and suggested that tariff rates of 15 to 30 percent were more realistic.

In the meantime, Chinese electric vehicle makers, including BYD and Great Wall Motor, are setting up factories in Hungary to build cars that would be viewed as European-made products, which could raise trade issues eventually with the United States.

The Biden administration is watching with similar concern as Chinese car companies invest in factories in Mexico, which could potentially be used to enter the U.S. market.

Following her speech, Ms. Yellen told reporters that the United States and countries in Europe have different concerns when it comes to commerce with China and, as a result, they could use different tools to address them. But she added that because many of the concerns about China’s heavy subsidization of exports are broadly shared, it is “more forceful to communicate to China as a group.”

The approach by the United States and Europe to work together to confront China does pose the risk of retaliation, inflaming trade tensions that could weigh on the world economy. Chinese officials said last week that they would respond to the new trade measures imposed by the United States.

In an interview with The New York Times this week, Ms. Yellen argued that the new U.S. tariffs were targeted and that she did not believe that China wanted to escalate tensions.

“I anticipate some response on China’s part, but my hope is that it’s moderate and proportional,” Ms. Yellen said.
