Rapper B Young to perform live at London’s newest super-venue HERE

B Young’s reputation as one of the UK’s most gifted singer-songwriters continues to grow with a slew of hit songs including Jumanji, Been Wavey, 079Me, Gucci Demon and Wine.

Last year he dropped his debut album Differences, which reflects the melodic rapper’s signature blend of Dancehall, R&B, Hip Hop, Afrobeat and Bashment with his unforgettable hooks. Standout tracks include Come Alive, Lightwork and Justin Bieber.

Of Turkish Cypriot heritage and hailing from Hackney, in multi-cultural East London, the 27-year-old has chalked up over 200 million streams, and more than 2 million single sales.

As fans in Britain and abroad are increasingly finding out, B Young remains as captivating on stage as he is in the studio.

To date, he has performed over 400 live shows, including festivals such as Wireless, Kultureland in Toronto, Afronation, Fresh Island, Asian Network live and the One Africa Show in Wembley Arena. He sold out his first UK tour in 2021 and will be headlining the Tokyo World Festival later this month.

He returns to London at the end of September, where he will be playing at the capital’s hippest new venue HERE, which is located four stories beneath Soho’s world-famous Denmark Street in Central London.

Part of Outernet London, a commercial and residential development project more than ten years in the making, HERE describes itself as the “first venue to be purpose built in Central London since the 1940s.”

The 2,000 capacity, 25,000-square-foot space will host live gigs and club nights. You can be among the first to sample HERE by going to see B Young, who plays there on 28 September – full details below.

B Young is a singer, rapper and songwriter hailing from an area called Hackney in East London. Before becoming a music artist, B Young spent several years self teaching his way around a studio, from learning to mix and master his own records to video editing. With his self taught skills, he was able to experiment with different sounds to craft his melodic rap and afrobeat/bashment crossover sounds.

In his teens and much like today, B Young split his musical tastes between his Caribbean friends’ Dancehall music and his friends of African heritage Afrobeats/Afrowave tastes. 2017 saw B Young’s explosive run with tracks Cash Flow, Wanna Know (Remix), London Boy, Been Wavey and Jumanji, which became the hit that would dominate the Official Charts, spending over 8 weeks in the top 20. With a back to back style approach B Young responded with his 079Me track also making it’s successful way straight to the charts.

Since then, B Young has still stuck to his DIY methods and continues to record, mix and edit his own videos in his bedroom studio. Through his own label, he has released singles such as Gucci Demon, Wine and Want2 which have accumulated over 30 million streams and views in the space of a year. He has performed in over 400 shows during his career so far including festivals such as Wireless, Afronation, Fresh Island, Asian Network live and the One Africa Show in Wembley Arena. B Young has also amassed over 2 million single sales and over 300 million accumulated streams and views. Letting the music speak first, B Young has quickly become known for his unforgettable hooks, melodies and for his ‘quality over quantity approach’.

About B Young

UK rapper and singer B Young draws from hip-hop and Afroswing on songs like his infectious 2017 hit “Jumanji”. • The rapper hails from Hackney, East London. He’s of Turkish-Cypriot heritage. • Infatuated by melody, he recorded his first song when he was 12 or 13. He later found work as a sound engineer before taking his own music seriously. • After a string of early singles, his 2017 track “Been Wavey” racked up millions of streams, paving the way for future chart success. • B Young’s true breakthrough came with 2017’s “Jumanji”, which spent 24 weeks on the UK charts, peaking at No. 13. • He spent the next few years releasing singles and scored another Top 20 by featuring on “808” by Da Beatfreakz.

Will Young has reflected on the moment he stood up to Simon Cowell while competing on Pop Idol .

Appearing on Elizabeth Day’s How To Fail podcast, Young was quizzed about the moment he called out Cowell for the judge’s scathing remarks during a performance on the show in 2002.

Young, then 22, performed a rendition of The Doors’s “Light My Fire” on the first ever series of the singing competition.

Cowell called the performance “distinctly average”, and Young took the opportunity to call out the judge’s track record of giving aspiring singers brutal feedback.

Reflecting on that moment, Young said he knew he wanted to stand up to Cowell.

“I thought if you get a moment then people will remember you,” he said. “And then I also knew that I really disliked that man. And I’d met him before on the This Morning boy band competition.”

“And I remember thinking I really don’t like that man, and I went to a school where I was surrounded by … quite unpleasant men. So, my radar for people who I perceive as unpleasant is quite on. And I just want to be careful.

“I’m not saying that he’s abusive, but my radar is pretty good. So my reaction was on live TV when I came across him.

Young added that he thought Cowell needed to be “put in his place”.

“Because I had to sit and watch him make people cry for weeks, building up to my live performance in front of him,” he continued. “And I just thought, ‘no one’s telling this man. Why is no one telling him?’ And so I was like, ‘I’m going to tell him.’”

“I think people in the music industry, entertainment industry… play on people’s desire. Your desire is going to make you do anything,” he added.

Young recalled that he had “already had my first bout of depression” by the time of the incident, which affected his handling of the situation.

“I’d lost someone close to me. I knew a bit of life. It wasn’t the be all and end all,” he said. “And so. I didn’t care about letting someone like him get away with it. Whereas I think lots of people in subsequent programs, I think there has been some awful behaviour actually, which is pretty well documented.”

At the time, Cowell watched Young’s performance and told him: “I’ve got a vision of Sunday lunch and after Sunday lunch you say in front of your family ‘I’m now going to sing a song for you’… Distinctly average, I’m afraid.”

Young told Cowell that he often “projected insults” onto contestants.

“All of us have been dying to say things to you – I’ve written about ten things to say to you,” the singer said. “I think it’s nice that you have given opinions on this show. I think in previous shows you haven’t, you’ve just projected insults and it has been terrible to watch. I think, this show, I think you have been better, and I think you have given opinions and you’ve backed up your opinions.”

“It is your opinion. I don’t agree with it. I don’t think it was average. I don’t think you could ever call that average. But it is your opinion and I respect that.”

Cowell backed down and replied: "You are a gentleman, sir."

The West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra will conclude this year's season with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (April 25) at the Canady Creative Arts Center, Lyell B. Clay Concert Theatre. 

The concert concludes a busy, successful season for the students and Director Rotem Weinberg, who picked up the orchestra’s baton last fall. 

The concert features Villa Lobos Sinfonietta No. 1 “A Memoria de Mozart;” Beethoven's Concerto No. 5 “Emperor,” featuring pianist Wenjun Xia; and Brahms’s “Variations on a Theme by Haydn.” 

“Villa Lobos and Brahms are both tributes to the classical masters Haydn and Mozart,” Weinberg said. “Each of the composers makes the material their own and gives it special treatment. The beloved Beethoven ‘Emperor’ concerto combines a sublime lyrical movement with a powerful and whimsical rondo.” 

Both Weinberg and Xia, a Canady Scholar and Young Artist Competition winner with the School of Music doctoral program, said working with the musicians on each piece is a joy. 

“I enjoy collaborating with these talented musicians. It’s exciting to interact with the orchestra, blending my solo voice with the ensemble’s sound to create a rich musical experience,” Xia said. “This collaboration can lead to dynamic and nuanced interpretations of the music that may not be possible in solo performances.

EU proposes youth mobility agreement with UK to help youngsters travel, work and live in both areas

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Commission proposed Thursday to start negotiations with the United Kingdom to allow young people to move freely, work and study in both regions after Brexit — the U.K.'s departure from the EU four years ago.

According to the EU, the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU following a referendum in 2016 has damaged mobility between the two areas.

“This situation has particularly affected the opportunities for young people to experience life on the other side of the Channel and to benefit from youth, cultural, educational, research and training exchanges,” the Commission said.

When the U.K. was still a member of the economic and political bloc, its nationals had the right to live and work freely in the EU, with reciprocity for EU nationals in the U.K. Under the agreement proposed by the EU’s executive arm, EU and UK citizens between 18 and 30 years old would be eligible to stay up to four years in the destination country.

The deal would also allow equal treatment of EU and UK students in the field of university tuition fees. Most EU students must now pay international tuition fees if they want to study in the U.K. The Commission says these vary between 11,400 and 38,000 pounds ($14,200-$47,300) per year and are a strong deterrent for EU students who generally don’t have to pay as much within the bloc.

The Commission’s recommendation will be discussed by EU member countries who must give the green light before the executive arm can start negotiations with the UK.

“We have successful Youth Mobility Schemes with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand, and remain open to agreeing them with our international partners, including EU member states,” the British government said in a statement.

The U.K. has its own Youth Mobility Scheme, which it has offered to some EU member states. The Commission believes the British plan is less ambitious than its own proposal.

“Our agreements provide a valuable route for cultural exchanges providing partner countries are also willing to offer the same opportunities for young British people,” the British government added.

'I really disliked that man': Will Young on standing up to Simon Cowell

Will Young has recalled the moment he stood up to Simon Cowell after the talent show judge described his performance as “average” while competing on Pop Idol.

The Leave Right Now singer, 45, famously clashed with acid-tongued Cowell , 64, before going on to win the ITV show, along with a recording contract back in 2002.

Prior to this, he entered a This Morning competition in 1999 to find members for a new boy band which Cowell was also the judge for.

Appearing on podcast How to Fail with Elizabeth Day , the Wokingham-born star - who recently released new single Falling Deep - admitted he took an instant dislike to Cowell when he met him.

“I knew I was going to stand up to him.… I think I knew that I needed a moment because I thought if you get a moment then people will remember you.

“I also knew that I really disliked that man,” he recalled.

“I'd met him before on the This Morning boy band competition…and I remember thinking I really don't like that man, and I went to a school where I was surrounded by quite unpleasant men. So, my radar for people who I perceive as unpleasant is quite on.

“And I just want to be careful,” he continued. “I'm not saying that he's abusive, but my radar is pretty good. So my reaction was on live TV when I came across him.

“So it was, give myself a moment, but also I'm not going to stand, he needs to be put in his place. Because I had to sit and watch him make people cry for weeks, building up to my live performance in front of him.

“And I just thought, ‘no one's telling this man. Why is no one telling him?’ And so I was like, ‘I'm going to tell him’.

“I think people in the music industry, entertainment industry play on people's desire. Your desire is going to make you do anything.

“By that stage, I'd already had my first bout of depression. I'd lost someone close to me. I knew a bit of life. It wasn't the be all and end all. And so I didn't care about letting someone like him get away with it.

“Whereas I think lots of people in subsequent programs, I think there has been some awful behaviour actually, which is pretty well documented.”
