The brainchild of Ben Bridwell, Band of Horses have gradually formed, under Ben’s careful guide, into one of the finest contemporary Rock and Roll bands in America.

Formed out of the ashes of former band Carissa's Wierd, Ben Bridwell led other former members in forming Band Of Horses in 2004. Like every band in Seattle they dreamed of signing to legendary label Sub Pop, former home of Nirvana and one of the most prestigious indie labels in the world. After opening for label act ‘Iron & Wine’, Sub Pop’s attention was captured and when it came to releasing their Debut EP in 2005 it was sold at shows and on Sub Pop’s website.

This was the start of a fruitful partnership and in 2006 Sub Pop’s released ‘Everything All the Time’, the band’s debut album. The album was critically acclaimed and spawned a surprising anthem in ‘The Funeral’. The song has been synced with a number of TV shows, adverts and games and the band were able to reach a wider audience than ever before when they played the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’.

Their second album ‘Cease To Begin’ showed signs of this new found success when it reached 35 on the Billboard album charts and appeared in numerous ‘best of year’ lists.

The success continued for the band as they began to play huge festival stages and even got major label distribution for their next two albums. They accomplished all this while staying true to Ben’s vision for the band and it’s that artistic integrity that really resonates with their fan base and will make sure they remain a rock and roll staple for years to come.

Live reviews

Friday 21st June, the Forum, London, Band of Horses. It’s best to get this out of the way first. BoH are probably my favourite contemporary band. They probably have about a dozen stone wall classic songs. It’s been ten years since I first saw them at Lollapalooza in Chicago where they took on Janes Addiction on an adjourning main stage and blew them away. Tonight’s show is a dilemma as its clashes with an electric Ryan Bingham and band in Islington but Ben Bridwell and his compadres get the nod.

It’s rare we get to The Forum these days unlike the nineties heydays when we seemed to be there every other week. It’s a big room and tonight the sound is very off from the outset. This isn’t helped initially by an under the weather Bridwell who has been nursing his throat for a few days. I am happy to say that both the overall sound and Bridwell’s voice warmed up during the night and although you could still barely make out his between song chat it didn’t detract from the great music.

Band of Horses have had a bit of an upheaval in the past two years with two long standing members, bassist Bill Reynolds and guitarist and harmonist Tyler Ramsey both quitting the band in 2017. Ramsey especially is a huge gap to fill both musically and vocally who I think acted as an important file for the band’s rough edges.

Back to tonight and it’s a big set with large spotlights surrounding the sound which I guess they are needing for their Black Deer festival appearance on Saturday. These are used to great effect and really add to the musical spectacle.

The set tonight kicks off with a new songs and then leans heavily to the first two albums and last long player ‘Why are you OK’. All the classics are here ‘Laredo’, ‘Ode to LRC’, ‘Great Salt Lake’, ‘Ghost’ but it is obviously set closer ‘The Funeral’ that makes the hairs on your arms stand up. It’s a truly spiritual moment, beginning with a simple hushed guitar and just Bridwell’s fragile voice building and building to that spectacular crescendo when the band and audience kick in and take over before we are taken right back down to basics of one man and guitar and then repeat. Stunning.

How do you follow that in the encore, well with a shambolic but enjoyable version of ‘Throw my Mess’ and finally a superb ‘The General Specific’. Despite sound and voice problems another standout show from one of the best live bands out there.

Till the next time keep on rockin y’all

Thursday 23rd February. The Troxy. Band of Horses. So a trip into deepest East London at the lesser used Troxy. My only other experience of the venue is a few years ago to the short lived supergroup Monsters of Folk. It’s a nice size but get there in good time to get into the pit at the front.

Taking our own advice we get there early for the excellent support of Israel Nash. It’s just an acoustic guitar and pedal steel for this short taster set for those who don’t know him. It works really well and arguably highlighted the songs and his superb falsetto voice better than the full band show from last year.

Next up is Band of Horses. Confession time. These are in my top three favourite contemporary bands so this review is somewhat biased. But in summary they f@ckin rocked. To describe BoH as purely a country rock band is doing them a massive disservice. Every time I have seen them they have offered the lighter contrast of an acoustic segment be it lead singer Ben Bridwell on his own on stage, up in the circle at the Hammersmith Odeon or by turning a Lollapalooza set in 09 into an intimate club gig. Tonight’s acoustic section is Bridwell, joined by guitarist Tyler Ramsey, and on mandolin Ryan Monroe surrounding a single mic ‘bluegrass’ style. Beautiful stuff.

Band of Horses are five albums into their career and they already have probably a dozen stone wall classic songs and to my delight they perform most of them tonight along with some assorted cuts from their new album ‘Why are you OK’ neatly skipping tracks from the below par Mirage Rock.

Bridwell advises the audience that the evening has not got off to a great night after severely cutting his finger and treading in shit, possibly human outside the venue (welcome to East London). Bleeding all night on guitars, jeans and towels he doesn’t let it affect his performance and he leads the band through a storming set.

Highlights too many to mention. ‘Laredo’ is a great singalong as is ‘NW Apartment’ and the encore of ‘Funeral’ and ‘General Specific’ ensures the pace doesn’t let up and there’s even time for a spot of Powderfinger’ for good measure.

It will take a lot to beat this from a purely rock concert perspective and joins Mandolin Orange as my favourite gig of the year so far of the ten I have been to

A great rocking night and keep on country rockin y’all

I saw the southern/Indie, country rock band Band of Horses live at the Lincoln Theatre, a huge concert venue in Washington, D.C., in February 2014. I've been a fan of Band of Horses ever since they first hit the music scene in Seattle a good decade ago, so I suspected it would be a good show. The four person band, led by singer Ben Bridwell, sure knows how to entertain an audience. Short on talk and long on music, the show was enjoyed by me and everyone I could see in the distance.

They began by singing "Is There a Ghost" and that made the audience go crazy. After that, they did songs from each of their albums, including Cease to Begin, which is my favorite. The best song, in my opinion, was "Heartbreak On The 101," a soulful and dramatic song that tells a heart-wrenching story. The show concluded with "No One's Gonna Love You," which probably would have resulted in a standing ovation if everyone wasn't already on their feet.

It's not hard to understand why Band Of Horses has such a huge fan base and worldwide recognition. Quite simply, they're good, and so was their show. If you have the chance to see them perform, do it because it's pure, soulful entertainment.

Something of a slow burner to the UK markets, Seattle rock outfit Band of Horses have gained serious momentum over the past few years following the release of their acclaimed album 'Mirage Rock' which appeared to open them up to a brand new untapped British audience who attended their shows in force to view what was seemingly America's best indie rock secret.

The crowds were not disappointed by the warm mannerisms of the quintet as well as the traditional, well tuned instrumental methods. There is no show element to Band of Horses' tour yet what keeps the audience thoroughly engaged is the brilliant musicianship and instrumental richness of the members onstage. They really do dissect their discography and build it back adding numerous layers of percussion or stripping some of the grander tracks back to their acoustic skeletons. In whatever way they are performed, the audience are fantastically responsive and cheer intently at the closing bars of every track. The band looks thoroughly pleased with the support and thank them sincerely before wrapping up with the stomping 'Ode to LRC'.

Band of Horses, the brainchild of legend and genius Brad Bridwell, have evolved into one of the most iconic contemporary cult American rock bands. The indie band was astonishing on stage, captivating the crowd with their soul, with Brad’s soft vocals and with Tyler Ramsey’s incredible guitar skills. From the moment that the chords for arguably their greatest hit, ‘Funeral’, were struck, the crowd was putty in their hands. An ethereal, beautiful and brilliant atmosphere was created as the crowd went silent to hear every note played, every string and every tone of Brad’s voice. The mood was both melancholy and rapturous. Everyone was very aware that they were in the midst of real musicians playing real music, music that meant something and that was beautiful and powerful all at once. ‘No One’s Gonna Love You’ opened the show and ‘Funeral’ closed it, but the songs in between were just as magical, displaying the band’s impressive repertoire. From ‘Is There a Ghost’ to ‘Infinite Arms’, the band put on one hell of a performance and left the crowd awe-struck.

There is something about this band that is both beautiful, and haunting at the same time. I've seen them live several times (both acoustic and full sound) and they have never disappointed me. They are very personable on stage, and look like they are having the best time up there. This sets a good tone with the audience, and helps the room to feel more relaxed to dance, laugh, and enjoy the show.

Throughout the night the band tossed candy into the audience, and people seemed to really enjoy the whole festive atmosphere. About half-way through the set I remember saying to my wife, "They have so many good songs." And they do; i just sometimes forget how fantastic their sets can be.

I'm looking forward to the next show.

To this 60 year old man, Band of Horses on Sunday night sounded excellent. Although their two and sometimes three guitar assault was thrilling, my favorite moment was when the Bridwell and Ramsey boned it down to just the two of them on stage and sang "No One's Going to Love You". It was heart breakingly simple and beautiful. The whole show was just a great night of music, including the opening act The Shelters. That's a new band that I'd only heard in the car on the way up, but I enjoyed live. Their guitar work was great too. Reminded me of the groups from the 60s and 70s I used to listen to. My daughter says they were to her the best opening band she's ever heard. I agreed.

It was a magnificent night. Despite my unfamiliarity with their new album, I still enjoyed the whole experience. Pleased to be able to sing together the hit songs, such as The Funeral, No One's Gonna Love You, and Laredo. Although I am a little disappointed that they didn't sing Blue Beard, For Annabelle, and Infinite Arms, but I realise that 1.5 hours is not enough to sing that many songs from the older albums.

A little highlight of the night is the fact that Ben cut his finger 30 minutes before the show. After performing mere 2-3 songs, it started bleeding again but he kept it cool and kept playing the guitar. Such a great dedication on showmanship!

WOW! 10/10! I have been a fan of Band of Horses for 8 years now and I knew they were great, but the live performance was outstanding. The energy and professionalism of the band was amazing! Ben's vocals were PERFECT! He sounds exactly as he does in the studio when he is live. I was also so surprised at not only the amount of energy that he had, but his stage presence and confidence was captivating! He has swagger! They played a non-stop action packed set and I would definitely recommend seeing them live. Worth every dollar. Keep up the good work guys!

You really should see these guys live. What a pleasant surprise. To be honest, I've never been into Band of Horses. They're one of those bands that Spotify is always throwing at me, but their music never hooked me. But I had heard they were a good show so I figured I've give it a shot. Man, I am glad I did. They are GREAT live. The crowd was clearly full of die hard fans, and the energy in the club was palpable. The sounded great, had a lot of fun with the crowd, and built their set list perfectly. For the money it may be the best show I've ever seen.

Band of Horses with special guest CARRIERS to perform live in concert at Rock the Ruins at Holliday Park in Indianapolis on Sunday, June 30, 2024!

Band of Horses Listen |  Watch

There might be no other band that was able to channel the generational anxiety in those early millennial years and turn it into such powerful and inclusive art quite like Band ofHorses. Band of Horses fashioned gorgeously ragged epics, Ben Bridwell’s high-flying vocals and eccentric enunciation floating like a specter that felt like a prelude to a dream. Full of profundity, truth, and sometimes just homespun advice on how to live, Band of Horses songs have becomeanthemsand touchstones for fans. Emotionally intense, both on a personal and elemental level, the songs for Band of Horses’ sixth album, Things Are Great, finds Bridwell more autobiographical than he’s ever been on record, detailing the nebulous frustrations and quiet indignities of relationship changes and what a person will do to make things right. And what you do when you can’t. Band of Horses is composed of Bridwell, longtime members Ryan Monroe and Creighton Barrett and new members Matt Gentling (ofArchers of Loaf) on bass, and guitarist Brett Nash. This fresh chapter finds the band recapturing the raw emotion and unpolished punk-rock spirit of its early days. The songs on Things Are Great document the connections in Bridwell’s life that have shifted, or remained. An epic album, Things Are Great is not an exercise in nostalgia or regret. It’s closer to the classic pattern of the hero’s journey, one where Bridwell doesn’t locate those elusive answers but does find himself in the end, providing hope that all of us can do the same.

Australian tour august 2008.

band of horses tour australia

Riding high on the freewheeling success of their recently released Cease To Begin album, Band of Horses return to Australia this August for a series of east coast shows. Having deservedly experienced a somewhat rapid ascent via their raggedly epic 2006 record, Everything All The Time, Band of Horses have delivered a passionate & confident follow-up in Cease To Begin, this time embracing flourishes of country & southern rock (they are South Carolina natives after all!) into their sparkling, dreamy and evocative songs.

Cease To Begin has also very much allowed the band to shed all the obvious comparisons that were made around the first album (The Shins, My Morning Jacket, The Flaming Lips) & what we have now is a very self-assured group making some of the most cathartic, exuberant & exciting rock music anywhere in the world. Don’t miss Band of Horses when they play in Australia this August, including an appearance at Splendour In The Grass.

The Whitlams Announce 2024 ‘Love This City’ 25th Anniversary Tour For Australia

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Australia Indie-rock band The Whitlams will mark the 25th Anniversary of their fourth album, “Love This City,” with a special tour of Australia. The album was released in 1999 and includes the hit single “Blow Up The Pokies,” peaking at #3 on the ARIA Albums Chart.

The band will play the album in full along with a number of their biggest hits from October to December. To make things even more exciting, they will be backed by a brass section, adding the “oomph” and “glitz” to their classic songs. The band will be joined by special guests Charm Of Finches on all dates except Melbourne, where Kim Salmon & Ashley Naylor’s Tag Team Classic will open the shows.

The tour will begin in Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on Friday, 3rd October, followed by Swansea’s Craigie Knowe on Saturday, 19th October, and will conclude the tour with a finals show at Adelaide’s The Gov on Saturday, 7th December.

Fans can sign up for presale tickets and also go into the running to win one of 10 prizes, from VIP soundcheck experiences, to “Love This City” vinyl test pressings, or hand-written lyrics by Tim Freedman . Freedman went as far as to declare his staunch stance on “blowing up the pokies” last year, in sympathy with the song’s anti-gambling message.

So far, ‘Stung!’ has been previewed by three singles: ‘(I’m) Stung’, ‘Neon River’ and ‘So Lo’.

The album follows their 2021 record ‘9’. In a four-star review of the album, Rhys Buchanan wrote for NME : “It’s can be a risky game to thrown yourself into so many different styles on a record, let alone within individual songs. Yet – from Bowie to Kurt Cobain and William Burroughs – artists of all kinds have found joy in such surrealist methods of cutting up their work and putting it back together. Having perhaps taken their psych-pop to the edges of what’s possible, Pond deserve this moment. Hopefully, it proves a gateway to a new era for the band that keeps on giving.”

Punk legends The Saints have reformed with an awesome and surprising new line-up

Ed Kuepper, a man with a light brown beard, stares into the distance

Mark Arm is sitting in the warehouse at Sub Pop records in Seattle. He's just clocked off from his day job at the label but his mind is elsewhere.

This November, the founder of grunge legends Mudhoney will have a new gig. He'll become the new frontman of The Saints, one of the most iconic bands in punk history.

"I'm kind of overwhelmed and super excited," he says. "I just hope to God that I do everyone proud. It's kind of frightening. It's a lot to take on. I don't want to f*** this up."

Return of the original punks

Punk rock history is hotly debated among music fans. While there are plenty of claims about who released the first punk record, there's no denying The Saints were pioneers.

The band formed in Brisbane's outer suburbs in 1973 and released their searing debut single '(I'm) Stranded' in 1976, months before the first releases from bands including Sex Pistols and The Clash. Their debut album followed in early 1977.

After being largely ignored in Australia, the band decamped to the UK where they made two more incredible albums before the band's classic line-up fell to pieces.

Frontman Chris Bailey kept the band going with different personnel until his death in 2022. Kuepper rejoined the band for limited but unforgettable shows in 2007 and 2009.

The call for Mark Arm to join the legendary Brisbane-bred punk rock band came through earlier this year. It took Arm by surprise. Like most red-blooded rock 'n' roll fans, he loves The Saints, but he has no personal relationship with the band's members.

"I've been in bit of contact with Ed, a couple emails, but I'm yet to meet him in person," Arm admits.

They might not yet be friends, but they are certainly mutual fans.

"I just think he's just got a fantastic voice," Kuepper says of his decision to ask Arm to front the band. "I just really like his singing. I wanted a vocalist that had a certain kind of power and vocal presence, and Mark has that."

Arm is not the only new face in this iteration of the band. Sunnyboys bassist Peter Oxley, who has accompanied Kuepper in The Aints and his recent solo work, will hold down the lower end with original Saints drummer Ivor Hay.

The great Mick Harvey — founding member of The Boys Next Door, The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, and an esteemed solo artist — joins Kuepper on guitar.

"I'd rehearsed with Ivor and Peter a couple of times, and I was thinking, 'I sort of miss my double-track guitar-playing, playing these songs,'" Kuepper explains of choosing to enlist a new guitarist.

"We considered a few people, and then Mick came up in the conversation, and I just thought, 'Yeah, f***, that is obvious.' He has the history. He's a really strong rhythm guitar player. I think I'm a fairly strong rhythm guitar player, and the combination of the two, the electric and the acoustic, will work really well."

Arm won't be in Australia to rehearse for some time. For now, he's practising every day by singing along to Saints songs on his daily commute to the Sub Pop warehouse.

And while his lips have mostly remained sealed so far, he couldn't resist letting a visiting Australian in on the secret.

"I saw the Cosmic Psychos two nights ago and, in between talks of new hips and hearing aids and whatnot, I told Ross [Knight, frontman and bassist] about this," Arm says.

"He was starting to get a little giddy."

The reformation tour will see the band play Saints songs from 1973-78 – the years Kuepper was in the band – and coincides with a long-awaited reissue of the band's classic 1977 debut album, (I'm) Stranded.

"This reissue of the first album, this box set, has been a work in progress for about four, maybe five years," Kuepper explains.

"It all started before Chris [Bailey, original frontman] died and then kind of got paused for a little bit. It's just been this really long, ongoing process."

The band's fervent fans will be beside themselves with excitement about this unexpected development in The Saints' long and complicated story. The good news is Kuepper – for whom The Saints is just one of many musical projects across his long career – is genuinely very excited as well.

"When we started the rehearsals – we've only done two – it was just really great going through that material again," he says.

"I've played some of those songs over the years, but always differently. Now doing them differently again, by sort of sticking fairly closely to the original arrangements, it was energising.

"I found it inspiring in a way that I didn't think that I would. I thought I'd enjoy this, but I'm actually thinking, 'This is going to be really great.'

"You can never relive the past, it's going to be of the now, but there's going to be an atmospheric aesthetic, which harkens to that earlier material.

"I'm excited about it. Which is a great feeling."

Mark Arm wears a green shirt as he sings on stage out the front of grunge band Mudhoney

As far as Mark Arm is concerned, he just wants to do the right thing by the band and the fans. He's a rock legend in his own right but has no interest in letting ego get in the way of a celebration of such a special band.

"I want to be true to Chris and try to honour him," he says. "I'm not going to just scream my way through Saints songs: That doesn't make sense. I'm focusing on trying to get the attitude and the delivery… I want to do it right.

"It's not about me. This isn't about me at all. I just get to participate in it."

The Saints' national tour kicks off at Hindley Street Music Hall, Adelaide, on November 13, before heading to Castlemaine, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane.
