17 Top Tourist Attractions in Belize

By Jamie Gambetta · Last updated on May 4, 2024

With the emerald-hued Caribbean Sea on one side and the vibrant jungles of Central America on the other, Belize is beginning to emerge as a regional jewel. The ancient Mayan ruins and fascinating heritage allow us to explore a bygone era. But on the same day, you can dive into vast reefs where underwater treasures lay in wait.

The natural and the human combine into a rich tapestry in Belize. It proves to be a tantalizing mix that makes every day unique. You’ll have ample opportunities to explore pristine nature preserves where calls of wildlife bounce between the ancient tree trunks.

As you venture into the wilds, you’ll discover the small villages that dot the maps. Cuisine, culture and the beats of Garifuna drums make you want to stick around. But of course, time stands still for no traveler, and there will always be new things to do in Belize and historic attractions to discover.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Facing the southern edge of Ambergris Caye about 4 miles from shore, Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the oldest reserve in Belize. Its name translates to "Little Channel," in reference to a coral-filled gap in Belize's immense barrier reef. Encompassing 3 square miles, this densely populated aquatic zone is a sanctuary for stingrays, eels and nurse sharks, among other creatures.

The reserve is separated into four parts: the mangroves, the reef, the sea-grass beds and Shark Ray Alley , which was designated as part of the reserve in 1999, about 10 years after the reserve was originally established. Because of its diversity, the reserve has flourished as a hot spot for scuba divers and snorkelers. Recent travelers said Hol Chan Marine's crystal-clear waters and abundant sea life make it a prime spot for snorkeling and diving.

Ambergris Caye Ambergris Caye free

With its plentiful outdoor activities, this 25-mile-long island off the coast of northern Belize caters to the snorkeling and diving set. The island was originally inhabited by the Mayas to serve as a far-extending trade route, spanning from present-day  Mexico  to as far south as Honduras. Today, Ambergris Caye ("am-Ber-gris Key") welcomes thousands of visitors seeking easy access to the barrier reef that surrounds the island. Snorkelers and intrepid divers alike will want to explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve . Most of the diving and snorkeling shops and instructors are found in San Pedro, including the Belize Pro Dive Center , Tuff E Nuff Tours and Scuba School Belize , which all offer a variety of daily excursions. Prices vary depending on the type and length of tours, plus any certification fees for diving.

When you're not underwater, explore San Pedro, Ambergris' main town. Here you'll find beachside restaurants, lounges, shops and luxury hotels. You'll notice the difference between this tourist hub and the more urban Belize City as soon as you step onto San Pedro's cobblestone streets, which are filled with golf carts and bicycles, rather than cars.

Caye Caulker Caye Caulker free

Just about 20 miles north of Belize City sits Caye Caulker, a 4-mile-long, sun-soaked island that boasts superb diving and snorkeling spots and a relaxed tropical ambiance. Though the island is mostly uninhabited by locals, visitors flock to the restaurants, shops and hotels perched at the northern tip near the Split (the area where Hurricane Hattie allegedly parted Caye Caulker into two halves in 1961), which is now a popular spot for water sports. Along the beach, you'll also find the Lazy Lizard restaurant, a party spot known for its tropical drinks and loud music.

Like Ambergris Caye , this remote island offers a broad range of snorkeling, scuba, sailing, kayaking and fishing services to nearby sites located along the surrounding barrier reef. There are also some unique attractions like the manatee wildlife sanctuary, Swallow Caye.

Xunantunich Xunantunich

Xunantunich – pronounced shoe-nan-too-nich – is a prominent Maya site sitting above the winding Mopan River that flanks San Jose Succotz village. A mere 15 minutes from San Ignacio Town , the first entrance to the site involves crossing over the river via a hand-cranked ferry before heading uphill to the temples. The ceremonial site boasts six major plazas, with the tallest structure being "El Castillo" (the castle), which has distinctly carved friezes on the east and west sides. Towering at 130 feet, El Castillo invites fit travelers to climb up its steps and admire a bird's-eye view of neighboring Guatemala and the Mopan River below. Occasionally, travelers may spot spider monkeys dangling from tree to tree, often carrying their young on their backs.

If you're on foot, the uphill hike to Xunantunich from where the ferry drops you off can be strenuous, so it's best to take your rental car onto the ferry or join a guided group tour that will provide transportation from the ferry landing to the site. For something more off-the-beaten-path, visitors can book a guided tour to Xunantunich via horseback. The path follows that of the river, so the journey to the site is filled with natural wonders and the sounds of gurgling streams.

ATM Cave Belize-Actun Tunichil Muknal ATM Cave Belize-Actun Tunichil Muknal

The journey through Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) cave, or the "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher," is one so extraordinary that visitors talk about it for years afterward. Venturing into this "underworld" – as the Mayas called it – requires resolve, determination and a passion for the unknown. Human skeletons, ancient Maya pottery and a network of chambers home to memories from centuries past await within the cave walls.

Hidden within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve about 20 miles southeast of San Ignacio Town , the ATM Cave beckons those who enjoy challenging excursions. After trekking through the forest for 45 minutes and crossing a river three times, travelers venture into the gaping mouth of the cave by wading in chest-deep water. Inside, you'll squeeze through cracks and crevices to enter the sacred chamber that houses the "Crystal Maiden." Allegedly a victim of a ritualistic sacrifice by the Mayas, this skeleton has developed a glimmering appearance after its bones were calcified. The human remains are said to be of a young girl, though its origins remain unknown.

Caracol Archaeological Reserve Caracol Archaeological Reserve

Caracol is one of Belize's most stunning pieces of ancient history – the Maya archaeological site is renowned for its impressive size, being the tallest human-made structure in Belize. Spanning roughly 25,000 acres, the ceremonial site houses two ball courts, a central plaza and several smaller structures. Archaeologists estimate that its population once peaked at 120,000 Mayas in the Classic Period, making it one of the largest cities in the Maya world. Its most iconic structure is its massive Caana (Sky Palace) pyramid, which stands at a towering 143 feet.

Visitors often make the hike to Caana's summit to drink in the panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. This makes a visit to Caracol not only one of historical value, but gives travelers a chance to appreciate the natural beauty of Belize's tropical rainforest.

Belize Zoo Belize Zoo

Stroll through this 30-acre zoo and you might think you've trespassed into a jungle. The small zoo houses 43 species: Jaguars roar, keel-billed toucans squawk, colorful scarlet macaws flutter and coral snakes slither across the thick forest floor. Peer through the zoo's leafy canopy trees and you may catch sight of Belize's beloved howler monkeys, or at least one tropical parrot, tapir, Jabiru stork or harpy eagle. And on the zoo's rustic path, especially during the late afternoon, keep your eyes peeled for one of Belize's beautiful native cats, which include margays, ocelots, pumas and jaguarundis.

Started as a rescue facility for animals that were used in a natural history documentary, the Belize Zoo feels like more of a wildlife preserve than a commercial zoo, according to recent visitors. Though reviewers described the zoo as small, they also praise its mission to provide rescued animals a safe place to live. Many recommended stopping here on your way to or from San Ignacio. For a more in-depth visit, heed the advice of past visitors and schedule a guided tour.

Altun Ha Altun Ha

This popular Maya site, speckled with tombs, pyramids and temples, served as a trading nexus during the Maya Empire's Classic Period (A.D. 250 to 900). Altun Ha – meaning "Rockstone Pond" in Yucatec Maya – features a human-made lagoon, which remains intact. During your visit, you'll likely encounter foxes, deer, birds and perhaps crocodiles occupying Rockstone Pond. Visitors also recommended exploring the Temple of the Green Tomb, where elite priest-kings were buried with luxurious items, such as jade, pottery and pearls. It was here that Belize's famous Jade Head, a nearly 10-pound jade carving of the Maya sun god Kinich Ahau, was discovered in 1968. Today, the artifact is referred to as "the crown jewel of Belize."

But keep in mind: If you don't like bugs, Altun Ha may not be for you. Travelers said that while the temples are amazing, the insects can be bothersome. Bring along strong insect repellant to keep the mosquitos away. Others warned that this is a popular stop for cruise shore excursions and that it can get crowded. Still, many travelers recommended making time to see this site, citing the unique opportunity to climb up with temples as a reason to visit.

San Ignacio San Ignacio free

U.S. News Insider Tip : Approximately one mile east of downtown San Ignacio is the Green Iguana Conservation Project at San Ignacio Resort Hotel. Stop by for a tour where you’ll be introduced to rehabilitated green iguanas of all shapes and sizes. – Gisselle Hernandez

Often referred to as the heart of the Cayo District , San Ignacio Town is a central hub where many adventures and activities originate. The town sits a little more than 60 miles southwest of Belize City and is home to historic landmarks that are mere minutes away, like Cahal Pech and Xunantunich Maya sites. San Ignacio is home to a welcoming people, many of whose creative talents are often displayed at the booming Saturday market. Walking down Burns Avenue, visitors will come across musicians, food vendors and artists selling their wares or hoping to trade travelers' stories.

Shark Ray Alley Shark Ray Alley

Located within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve , Shark Ray Alley is one of the most popular attractions southeast of San Pedro. The area, known as "Zone D" within the reserve, was a place where fishermen used to clean their catches of the day, which attracted myriad underwater residents like sting rays, nurse sharks and even the occasional manatee. Since Shark Ray Alley is a mere 15 minutes by boat from San Pedro Town, it's easy to fit in a half-day visit. Visitors can spend the morning snorkeling or diving with underwater wildlife and then return to San Pedro Town for an afternoon of exploration. As a general rule, feeding and touching the creatures is highly discouraged, and a good tour operator will remind visitors of this before allowing them to jump into the turquoise waters.

Past visitors were amazed at the abundance of nurse sharks and stingrays at Shark Ray Alley. They also commented on the clear, shallow waters and the docile sharks. For many, this was a bucket-list experience.

Great Blue Hole Great Blue Hole

Plunge into this deep blue hole and you'll discover imposing ancient stalactites (calcium deposits resembling icicles) and coral fringe. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 – along with six other areas surrounding Belize's barrier reef – the Great Blue Hole remains one of the world's most distinguished scuba sites. Created during the last glacial period approximately 10,000 years ago after a cave roof crumbled in, this blue channel contains underwater tunnels, caverns and rock formations.

You'll likely spot marine life lining the coral wall at the surface of the hole. As you descend about 410 feet below sea level, you'll discover the stalactites, but it's unlikely you'll encounter many underwater creatures (expect the occasional shark!). Even if you're not a diver, recent visitors recommended snorkeling around the hole and the nearby reefs. Make sure to visit in the dry season, with ideal weather conditions most likely in April and May.

Lamanai Lamanai

Perched on the New River Lagoon in northern Belize, this sprawling 960-acre Maya site stands masked in crocodile art. Lamanai means "submerged crocodile" in Yucatec Maya, which should give you a good idea of what you'll encounter here: artifacts depicting representations of the reptile, plus crocodiles (and iguanas) crawling along the banks of the New River to catch some sunlight.

Inhabited from about 1500 B.C. to A.D. 1700, Lamanai is the longest-occupied known Maya site in the world. Its dense compound features three Maya pyramids, the remains of a 16th-century Spanish church and several noteworthy plazas and temples established during Pre-Classic Mayan rule. You won't want to skip climbing the High Temple, and you'll also want to visit the Mask Temple, which includes ancient artifacts linked to Maya, Aztec and Olmec rulers. Just come prepared with sunscreen, light clothing, insect repellant and plenty of water.

Hugging the Caribbean coast and about an hour north of Placencia , Hopkins is a rapidly growing hot spot for visitors wanting all of the beaches and none of the crowds. Visitors can have an immersive experience with the vibrant Garifuna people by learning how to cook authentic dishes, such as hudut, a spice-filled coconut soup complete with fresh fish and mashed plantain.

Visitors can also try their hand at Garifuna drumming – this is a skill passed down from generation to generation within the Garifuna culture as a means of keeping their history alive. Both cooking and drumming lessons can be done at the Lebeha Drumming Center or Warasa Drum School, where for the latter, the half-day experience, including the meal, will range from $75 to $100 per person. Other packages include drum-making and dancing lessons.

Deep within the jungles of Western Belize lies the vast Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, a region spanning about 300,000 acres. Rife with wildlife, travelers hiking – or simply passing through – are rewarded with jaguar, ocelot, cougar sightings and more. The area is peppered with pine trees, a stark contrast with the palm trees dotting its neighboring lowlands. 20 Best Things to Do in Belize, From Barrier Reef Excursions to Cave Tours

Get to know Belize with these suggestions from locals.

belize main tourist attractions

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Comprised of more than 400 islands and nearly 9,000 square miles of mainland, Belize is home to rainforests, jungles, mountains, rivers, an extensive cave system, and many well-preserved ancient Maya ruins. Adventures on both land and sea make Belize a popular destination, and its beaches and resorts are terrific for visitors who simply want to relax and enjoy the tropical climate . To better understand the variety of ways travelers might get to know Belize, we gathered suggestions from local experts, including Patricia Johnson, head of trip design at Absolute Belize (and a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor ); David Benzaquen, general manager at Cayo Espanto ; and multiple team members with Alaia Belize . Anoushka Brandl, commercial director at Matachica Resort & Spa and Gaïa Riverlodge , and Janet Woollam, managing director at Victoria House Resort & Spa , shared their thoughts as well. This list of things to do in Belize features ideas for everyone, from adventurers and history buffs to foodies and travelers looking to chill out on a lounge chair in the sun.

Tour the ancient city of Caracol.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

One of the largest Maya sites in Belize, this ancient city covers about 25,000 acres in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. “You’ll marvel at the massive pyramids, detailed carvings, and remarkably well-preserved ancient artifacts,” says Johnson. “And you’ll learn fascinating details about ancient Maya culture, from daily life and religion to the ingenuity of their buildings.”

Snorkel or dive in the Great Blue Hole.

Located about three hours by boat off Ambergris Caye, the Great Blue Hole is a ring of coral encircling a huge underwater sinkhole. It’s home to colorful fish, shrimp, groupers, black tip and reef sharks, and other Caribbean marine life. Almost 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is accessible by dive boat tours.

Fly over the Great Blue Hole on a helicopter tour.

For a birds-eye view, stunning photos, and a thrilling experience, take flight over the Great Blue Hole. Several of our experts suggested this tour, and Benzaquen pointed out that Cayo Espanto “is home to a helipad and partners with a local service provider” for convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Enjoy traditional Belizean dishes.

“I suggest checking out local eateries like El Fogon in San Pedro’s downtown for traditional Belizean food,” says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. At Matachica Resort, Brandl tells T+L, “The Captain’s Table, a social gathering for eight guests, is a five-course dinner hosted by a different resort team member each time, a true local food experience.”

Explore the underground caves of Belize.

The ancient Maya believed that caves were entrances to the underworld, and in Belize, travelers can explore a number of them by hiking, canoeing, tubing, or swimming. The experience is “an adventure you will never forget,” according to Johnson. “One such sacred cave is Actun Tunichil Muknal , which contains a remarkable collection of artifacts and skeletal remains that have been preserved over the centuries.”

Join a tubing tour through the caves.

Cavan Images/Getty Images

Offered by many local tour companies, cave tubing is a visitor favorite in Belize. After a drive to the rainforest, there’s a short hike before you hop on an inner tube to float along an underground river through the natural caves. A guide navigates the tubes, so no paddling is required. Lunch and transportation from a central meeting point are usually included.

Feast on your own fresh catch.

Heather_Cameron/Getty Images

According to Woollam, “Reef fishing with a beach BBQ is fun and widely popular. The fishing is quick and easy, followed by lunch cooked over an open fire. Fresh seafood with Belizean spices, marinades, and condiments has been called the best lunch ever.” Describing a Cayo Espanto excursion, Benzaquen tells T+L, “After snorkeling, you catch your own fish, conch, or lobster, then you head to an uninhabited island beach where your guide will cook your 'catch of the day.’”

Hang with locals at Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

The secret is out, and it’s the place for all-day music, food, and drinks. “Alaia’s guests often rent a golf cart to visit Secret Beach, where a day of relaxation, paddle boarding, and jet skiing awaits,” says Jesus Oba, concierge with Alaia Belize. Nearby, The Truck Stop features a beer garden, pool with swim-up bar, movie screen, games, and live music.

Learn all about chocolate.

The ancient Maya are said to have invented chocolate, and the annual Chocolate Festival of Belize celebrates that history, local culture, and more. If you can't attend the May event, there are other options. Brandl suggests that visitors “Experience traditional Maya chocolate making at Ajaw in San Ignacio, then try the delectable chocolate brownie at Gaïa Riverlodge's Five Sisters Restaurant as a midday sweet treat.” In San Pedro, visit Belize Chocolate Company or Mahogany Chocolate .

Dive or snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

cinoby/Getty Images

“Our most popular and sought-after tour is snorkeling or diving among the vibrant marine wildlife in Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley," says Oba of Alaia Belize. "Our guests get a thrill out of swimming with nurse sharks, giant jackfish, blue tangs, and sea turtles. Some guests overcome their fear of getting in the water and come out wanting to go back in."

Experience the Belize Barrier Reef.

Joel Sharpe/Getty Images

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and second in size after the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, the Belize Barrier Reef extends more than 180 miles along the coast of Belize. Dive, snorkel, or do as Patricia Johnson suggests: “Hop on a sailing adventure and explore the vibrant marine life, colorful corals, and picture-perfect islands along the Belize Barrier Reef.” Woollam recommends “an easygoing sunset cruise along the reef," noting that most catamarans sail for about two hours.

Browse the shops in San Pedro town on Ambergris Caye.

“As a local, one of my favorite things to do is explore the small shops, restaurants, and bars in San Pedro town," says Eric Porter of Alaia Belize. "If you are an art buff or just looking to take home a souvenir, stroll downtown where small galleries, gift shops, and nifty nooks are in abundance."

Learn about the Garifuna people.

Karen Brodie/Getty Images

“Experience the culture of the Garifuna people by taking part in traditional drumming and dancing celebrations, sampling local dishes, and even staying in a Garifuna village," suggests Johnson of Absolute Belize. "You’ll come away from this experience with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the richness and friendliness of the Belizean people.” ToursByLocals offers a full-day Garifuna culture tour with convenient pick-up and drop-off.

Get dive certified.

“The proximity of the reef to the resorts makes getting dive certified an easy, safe, and fun experience," says Woollam. "If you have the desire to learn how to scuba dive, dive organizations like PADI have made classroom time a thing of the past. The theory portion of the certification is easily accessible online and can be done at home prior to arriving in Belize.”

Explore Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

Located about two hours from San Ignacio in the Cayo District of south central Belize, this reserve is home to natural pools , caves, Maya ruins, and waterfalls, including the highest waterfall in Central America, Thousand Foot Falls. Stay within the reserve and above Five Sisters Falls at Gaïa Riverlodge .

Meet new feathered friends.

Tom Cawthon/Getty Images

Grab your binoculars and try to spot some of the nearly 600 species of birds that live in Belize. The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a great place for birdwatching , and Paradise Expeditions offers a variety of expert guided tours on the mainland and cayes.

Go on a fishing excursion.

On a half-day or full-day deep sea fishing adventure, you’ll be fishing for tuna, mackerel, marlins, and more. For a more casual day of fishing different spots along the reef, you can choose reef fishing in calmer seas. Ideal for families, the latter trip includes rum punch, snacks, sodas, and lunch. Turneffe Atoll is also a favorite fishing destination.

Get active in the Caribbean Sea.

Once you’ve relaxed on the beach and you’re ready to get wet, it’s time for your favorite activity on the water. “While Ambergris Caye is known for its proximity to the reef for snorkeling and diving, our guests also enjoy other adventurous water activities, including parasailing, windsurfing, or jet skiing, which our concierge is able to organize for them,” says Oba of Alaia Belize .

Visit Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center.

JC Cuellar/Getty Images

More than 150 native animals make the 29-acre Belize Zoo their home. Most of the zoo’s residents are rehabilitated or rescued, and they include tapirs, jaguars, spider monkeys, toucans, macaws, coatimundi, and more. The fully accessible zoo offers VIP guided tours.

Browse and shop at San Ignacio Market.

Cyrielle Beaubois/Getty Images

Located in the Cayo District in western Belize, this market is set on the banks of the Macal River in San Ignacio. Open every day until 6 p.m., the market gives visitors a true glimpse into Belizean life, with handmade clothing, handicrafts, fruits, vegetables, and herbs for sale by farmers and local craftsmen. Nearby San Ignacio town offers restaurants, bars, and shops.

If you're in search of natural wonders from treetops to shore, incredible culture and a warm welcome, Belize needs to be on your travel to-do list.

There's great food, incredible nature and wildlife, and vibrant villages, each with its own distinct personality.

And because of the country’s small size and how easy it is to navigate , there’s no need to decide between the beach and the rainforests, the reefs or the caves, the parties or the peace. In Belize, you can have it all. These are the nine places you can't afford to miss when you get there.

1. Ambergris Caye

Belize's unmissable destination

Ambergris Caye is the top place to go for visitors to Belize and the vibrant town of San Pedro is the beating heart of this unique island. This colorful caye has  hotels ranging from budget to luxe and classic Caribbean activities like snorkeling and sailing. Many of Belize’s best restaurants can be found here, as well as excellent nightlife  and shopping.

Just about every kind of traveler comes to Ambergris Caye and it’s a great hub from which to experience Belize’s water-based activities.

While you can make day trips to Maya ruins and the jungle from here, it’s advisable to switch to an inland destination for those – otherwise, you will spend a lot of time traveling.

Must-see spots include driving a golf cart up to Secret Beach, eating fry jacks for breakfast at The Fry Jack House , and grabbing a glass of rum at Havana Cigars .

As for things to do, snorkeling at  Hol Chan Marine Reserve  is one of the most popular activities in the country, but heading up north to Mexico Rocks can provide an equally fish-filled experience with fewer crowds.

Planning tip:  Ambergris Caye has a small airport that’s only a 15-minute flight from Belize’s international airport and it’s easy to rent a golf cart – the island’s quintessential mode of transportation – from there.

2. San Ignacio

Best hub for outdoor adventures

Adventure abounds in San Ignacio , a large town on Belize’s western border that embodies the country's Central American side, trading beaches for waterfalls and snorkeling for cave exploration. Much of Belize’s jungles and land-based wildlife can be found around here.

There are also many Maya ruins nearby, such as  Xunantunich and  Cahal Pech , as well as the famous ATM cave. San Ignacio makes an excellent starting point for excursions, including to other spots down the coast.

The bar and restaurant scene is on the rise and there is plenty to enjoy in the area. Head to Guava Limb Cafe for wood-fired pizza, and don’t miss the breakfast fry jacks at Pop’s Restaurant .

The overall vibe of the town feels very local, with hotels the only spot where tourists stand out among the crowd, making the bars fun for anyone craving connection with Belizeans.

Check out Soul Project below  Old House Hostel on Wednesday and Friday nights to see local musicians and artists in action.

For those craving jungle immersion, book a stay at Chaa Creek to experience the luxurious side of nature, or go further into the wilderness at Black Rock Lodge , where birders feel right at home.

Planning tip:  San Ignacio is the best starting point for travelers looking to cross the border into Guatemala to explore Tikal or continue their travels in Central America.

3. Punta Gorda

Best place for adventures away from the tourist crowds

Punta Gorda is the largest village near Belize’s southern border, a spot largely off the typical tourist track. It’s where the country’s densest jungles are found, as well as a concentrated Maya community.

This is a popular spot for adventure travelers, those who have already been to other parts of Belize, and visitors who prefer to avoid the crowds. Though it’s on the water, it’s not too beachy, so keep yourself busy with excursions out to nearby cayes or visit some of the Maya ruins nearby.

The town of Punta Gorda has a few restaurants and bars, as well as places to stay. Copal Tree Lodge is a favorite among visitors looking for a little luxury, with large rooms built into the hillside and an open restaurant area that’s often visited by howler monkeys in the morning.

There’s also a rum distillery onsite – don’t miss a chance to see how Copalli Rum gets made.

4. Placencia

Best place in Belize for beaches

The coast of Southern Belize feels like what Ambergris Caye was like before Belize became a major tourism destination, but today Placencia gets the honor of being one of the country’s top beach destinations .

This former fishing village has transformed into an upscale retreat with beach bars, top restaurants, and high-end resorts.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn is one of the most desirable spots to stay, with design, decor, and a wine selection straight from the filmmaker’s imagination. Three Iguanas is an excellent, affordable accommodation option that’s right in town.

Popular excursions include taking a boat ride out to the Silk Cayes or booking an inland trip with DTOURZ to explore the nearby Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary  – it even offers overnight trips to maximize the chances of seeing the nocturnal jaguar.

In town, visitors enjoy shopping along the boardwalk, relaxing on the sandy beach, and cooling down with a scoop of gelato from the Italian-owned Tutti Frutti .

5. Ray Caye

Best private island experience

There are hundreds of islands off Belize’s coasts to choose from and Ray Caye is one of the best. The Raye Caye resort  is developed, has modern, clean lodging and an incredible restaurant.

Visitors can either choose to stay overnight or visit for the day, though overnight guests will have access to the entire island while day guests are restricted to certain areas.

It’s worth booking a few days at Ray Caye for travelers who want to get a sense of what it’s like to live on a Caribbean island – it ensures being closer to the reef than staying on shore.

It's very relaxed here, and you can happily hang around the island all day taking soothing soaks in the warm water. If you're in search of an adventure, though, there are excursions and activities to choose from, including sailing trips and snorkeling along the island's reef.

Planning tip: Look out for yoga weekend getaways, when local yoga teacher Brice Dial takes over Ray Caye with a group for a few days of relaxation and mindfulness.

6. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Best spot for nature lovers

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is an area in Cayo near San Ignacio with lots of options for those seeking experiences in nature.

Though it doesn’t have the towering canopies of a rainforest, this unique ecosystem is still home to plenty of species of wildlife, including cougars, jaguars, acorn woodpeckers, eastern bluebirds and small critters of all kinds.

One of the best hotels in the area is another one of Francis Ford Coppola’s properties, Blancaneaux Lodge . This regal resort is perched above a river, though the onsite pool is a great place to cool off, too.

Within the reserve, visitors can soak at Río on Pools , cool off at Big Rock Falls , or book birdwatching trips and horseback riding tours. If you continue to the edge of the border, you’ll find Caracol , a Maya ruin that remains the tallest human-made structure in Belize.

Planning tip:  Though the main road has been paved to improve accessibility into the area, the volatile weather for which the tropics are known makes renting a 4WD the ideal way to reach this spot.

A highway snakes through a gently rolling landscape of green hills and fields

7. Hummingbird Highway

Best route for road trippers

Belize’s most scenic road is the Hummingbird Highway, connecting the capital city of Belmopan with the southern villages. The drive takes you through the forested mountains, between orchards and Mennonite farms, with stops for scenic cenotes and the best tamales you’ve ever had along the way.

Make time to stop at St Herman’s Blue Hole National Park to cool off, and pull over for Ms. Bertha’s Tamales for lunch – the red-and-white structure is located on the side of the highway in Middlesex.

You can't miss it, and every local knows where it is – the multiple cars surrounding it at any time are a testament to its popularity.

Because the Hummingbird Highway is situated between some of Belize’s other top destinations, it can be an ideal spot to base yourself – and the options are excellent.

The Rainforest Lodge at Sleeping Giant  immerses you in the rainforest, with an incredible view of the canopy and beyond. Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch Jungle Lodge is a family-friendly option that helped create Belize as an eco-friendly adventure travel destination and remains one of the best hotels for helping guests plan excursions of a lifetime.

Planning tip:  It’s not necessary to stay on the Hummingbird Highway to enjoy what it has to offer – just be sure to drive slowly and carefully to take in everything as you pass through. It’s a unique part of the country that makes any road trip worthwhile.

Best village for Garifuna culture

Belize is known for being diverse when it comes to culture, and one of the most unique groups in the country is the Garifuna people, who live predominantly in Hopkins , Dangriga , Placencia and areas near those villages.

Hopkins is a small, upbeat village with a long sandy beach that, while lacking in many modern trappings of life, is a unique spot to explore Garifuna culture.

One of the most popular ways to do this is by attending a drumming lesson, which inevitably turns into a dance party. The Lodge at Jaguar Reef is a great place to stay in Hopkins, but there are budget options as well.

9. Caye Caulker

Best place for laid-back travelers

Caye Caulker is an island near Ambergris Caye but with a very different personality. This is a laid-back place for backpackers, younger travelers, and those who like to go slow.

One of the most popular spots on the island is The Split , a hurricane-created channel at the northern end. This is the perfect place to grab a drink, go for a swim, and enjoy Caye Caulker’s relaxed party atmosphere.

Planning tip:  Head to Pasta per Caso , an Italian-owned restaurant with handmade pasta dishes, for a delicious meal.

The Best Places to Visit in Belize

belize main tourist attractions

Belize is small but mighty. The country boasts gorgeous landscapes, fascinating history, incredible biodiversity, and a deep and diverse culture that will attract just about any type of traveler. Whatever your interest might be, Belize is bound to have it. With so much to do and see, it might be overwhelming to know where to go or even where to start. Well, look no further: This is your ultimate guide to Belize's best places to visit.

Ambergris Caye

Courtesy of Alaia Belize

Ambergris Caye is Belize’s buzziest locale. Visitors flock to the main town of San Pedro to relax on the beach by day and party it up by night. It's home to some of the best resorts, such as Alaia Belize .

Alaia is a luxurious resort that offers an inclusive package . This resort provides extra large, family accommodating suites, and an impressive culinary menu, and has the only molecular mixologist in the country. While many might be tempted to not leave the beautiful resort, the town of San Pedro is worth exploring during the day to experience local Belizean food. WTF Food Tours takes guests around the island to the best local spots, ordering for you so you can never go wrong.

Mountain Pine Ridge Forest

Located in Belize’s Cayo District, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest is half pine forest and half jungle covering over 100,000 acres. This area is rich with wildlife, birds, and of course, plants. Only recently did the government begin building the first paved road into the area allowing travelers to explore this beautiful natural reserve. Hidden Valley Wilderness Lodge is a luxury eco-resort covering over 7,000 acres of the park. Guests can hike and explore the surrounding area, as well as nearby sites like the Mayan ruins of Caracol, which are still the largest human-made structures in Belize.

Courtesy of Naia Resort and Spa

This former fishing village is now a resort hot spot that has managed to hold on to its local Belizean flare. For a relaxing getaway stay at Naia Resort , where guests are given their private beachside villa. From delicious local dishes to a luxurious spa-like oasis, Naia has it all. Naia’s location is also ideal for exploring nearby neighborhoods to get a taste of local life.

Speaking of location, Placencia is on a peninsula in southern Belize this locale gives visitors equal opportunity to take tours into the rainforest and mainland Belize as well as to the nearby Silk Caye Marine Reserve. What's more, the nearby village of Hopkins offers opportunities for visitors to experience the unique Garifuna culture.

TripSavvy/Taylor McIntyre

If you want to get off the grid and have a private island experience then book a stay on Ray Caye . You can choose between beach cabanas or villas. The honeymoon suite even boasts a private plunge pool. You can borrow a kayak or snorkel equipment by day and enjoy the island’s blue light that shines at night to attract sea life ashore. The perfect spot for wildlife life lovers as Ray Caye is a sea turtle hatching location as well as attracts large birds of prey. If you can’t spend the night there is a smaller area for daytime visitors to enjoy a pool, a beach, and a restaurant where they grow the majority of the greens on the island.

Caye Caulker

Consider Caye Caulker Ambergris' smaller, chiller neighbor. If you're more interested in a good book by the beach than bar hopping then head to this more laid-back alternative. No cars are allowed on Caye Caulker and everyone gets around on bikes or golf carts. This forces a slower, more relaxed way of life. So lie in a hammock and enjoy an ocean view with a fruity drink. If you’re still looking for a bit of adventure Belize’s barrier reef is still only one mile away!

San Ignacio

San Ignacio is the capital of the Cayo District and is known as the adventure capital of Belize. It has a small-town charm, offering local food markets and an Iguana sanctuary. But San Ignacio’s true appeal is its location. It is the perfect jumping-off point for any in-land adventure Belize has to offer. The Cayo District is famous for rainforest excursions or a day trip to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. There are also several Mayan ruin complexes around San Ignacio including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech. Travelers can enjoy cave tubing or the truly adventurous can venture out to the ATM Cave.

Belize City

Belize City holds the country’s only international airport and services the port for all visiting cruise ships. It’s a shame that the majority of travelers are just passing through as Belize City holds a massive amount of history as well as culture. The Historic Belize City Tour and the Museum of Belize help visitors understand Belize's past and present. Animal lovers will be interested in the Belize Zoo, which focuses on rescued native species and provides them with large open habitats to roam. There are also many nearby attractions like the Altun Ha Ruins or the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Hummingbird Highway

The Hummingbird Highway is one of four highways in Belize. But it is by far the most scenic drive in the country. It stretches 53 miles from the capital Belmopan to the town of Dangriga. The highway cuts through gorgeous views of forested mountains and tries to find what the locals call the “sleeping giant” hidden in the landscape. Along the way, you can also enjoy pit stops at caves, cenotes, and tons of local food options.

Lighthouse Reef

The Great Blue is one of Belize’s most famous attractions. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest sinkhole in the world. Lighthouse Reef is made up of the surrounding cayes that border the sinkhole. You can visit the reef by boat or through a fly-over tour. Snorkelers and scuba divers flock to the great blue hole to see what they can find. The most visited Caye of Lighthouse Reef is Half Moon Caye, which is home to over 4,000 red-footed boobies.

Getting to this cave is not for the faint of heart. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave, better known as the ATM Cave, was discovered in 1989 and offers a unique look into ancient Mayan rituals. Within this cave, visitors will find the remains of several sacrifice victims as well as ancient utensils, pottery, and other artifacts. However, getting to the cave is not a walk in the park. Visitors must go with guides and will have to complete a somewhat strenuous hike, multiple river crossings, swimming through submerged caves, squeezing through very tight spaces within those caves, and traversing up rock faces. And that’s only one way! If you’re physically up for the challenge, this is an incredibly unique experience and look into the past.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Located near Ambergris Caye, Belize’s barrier reef is the second-largest coral reef structure in the world. While The Blue Hole is the most famous attraction in this barrier reef there is so much more to explore. Home to over 100 species of coral and 500 species of fish, you’ll also likely see nurse sharks, sea turtles, and sting rays. How Chan Marine Reserve welcomes visitors looking to snorkel, scuba dive, fish, or swim in sharks in its Shark Ray Alley.

Map of things to do in Belize

For me, Belize was a bit of a surprise. I try to have little to no expectations when I visit countries so that I can simply take in whatever comes my way, but I wasn’t sure that Belize was going to be that exciting. How WRONG I was!

Belize was chock full of epic adventures, beautiful islands, amazing food (seriously, I didn’t have a single bad meal), and truly some of the loveliest people I’ve met in my travels! I was, yet again, putting another country on my list of “loved it, will return!”

I hope your travels through Belize will have you feeling the same. Especially with an epic list like I have here for you. For the most part, I separated everything by area to break it up and show you where you may want to base for certain activities.

Things To Do in Placencia, Belize

Want a relaxing beach getaway? Want to have access to other beautiful cayes just offshore? Ready to let go and enjoy some of the nicest resorts in the country? Placencia is your spot!

Head down the Placencia Peninsula, about 16 miles south, and you’ll hit the charming seaside town of Placencia. You can SUP and kayak just offshore, roam the shops, and explore the eateries.

Colorful buildings on Placencia Pier for things to do in Belize

This is a chill village with some happening beach bars and a looong beach to enjoy.

While most of the beach here seems private because it’s taken up by vacation homes and resorts, you can head to Placencia Beach Club or the pier at the tip of the peninsula to claim your slice of sand.

For a real-life castaway experience, head to the Silk Cayes. Also called the Queen Cayes, these two deserted islands sit off the coast of Placencia and feature 360-degree views of pure ocean. The only way to get here is to book a tour .

Silk Caye is one of the best beaches in Belize

The islands are a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon. You can enjoy the silence from the sugar-soft sand as you lap up the views or dive below the surface to discover an abundance of tropical marine life.

→ Book this Silk Caye Snorkeling Tour

If you’re spending any time along the Placencia peninsula, don’t hesitate to make the trip out to Laughing Bird Caye. This uninhabited island sits about 45 minutes off the coast, and its undeveloped atmosphere affords visitors remarkable tranquility.

Laughing Bird Caye is a national park, so its soft white sand and gorgeous blue waters are lovingly protected and preserved.

Laughing Bird Caye is one of the best beaches in Belize

The island and park were named after the raucous laughing gulls that once nested here. While you won’t find any laughing birds today, plenty of other exciting species inhabit the island, both on land and under the sea.

Many tours out to the island include snorkeling gear to get a closer look at the coral and marine life beneath the surface. Take a tour here while you’re in Placencia, as it’s the easiest caye to reach from here.

→ Book this Snorkeling Tour to Laughing Bird Caye

Those searching for unique things to do in Belize should make a beeline for the Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve. While this spot is a bit over an hour from Placencia, this is one of the best things to do from the peninsula. You can easily book this tour here which leaves from Placencia.

Founded in the 1980s, this wildlife preserve protects some of the country’s endangered species. The main draw to this area is seeing big cats in the wild.

Bens Bluff Waterfall at Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve for things to do in Belize

You might spot pumas, jaguars, ocelots, or the adorable jaguarundi if you’re lucky. Other species that call this area home include tapirs, armadillos, otters, monkeys, and hundreds of native bird species.

Even if you don’t spot any wildlife (I, unfortunately, didn’t), the Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve is a gorgeous place to spend the day.

You can hike the trails through the rainforest as you seek out scenic waterfalls or the summit of Belize’s highest mountain peak. Taking a dip in Ben’s Bluff waterfall was the highlight of my visit here!

— 👉 TOP PICK — Chabil Mar Villas – Where you stay can make or break any vacation. Don’t gamble on your resort in Belize; book your stay at Chabil Mar Villas. A stay at this upmarket resort includes your private villa, access to the beachfront infinity pools, and complimentary kayaks, paddleboards, and bicycles.

Paddleboarding at Chabil Mar Resort one of the things to do in Belize

In addition, you’ll stay close to all the action of Placencia thanks to the resort’s proximity to the village. It seriously does not get much better than this!

Maya Beach Hotel  – Enjoy views of one of the best beaches in Belize from your room or private apartment at this three-star hotel. The grounds feature a year-round swimming pool, hammocks for lounging, and guests can make use of bikes or kayaks.

Things To Do in Hopkins, Belize

I almost skipped this spot, and I’m so glad I didn’t! But if Placencia isn’t your style, you want a bit more of a budget backpacker-y beach town, and aren’t too into resorts— Hopkins is your spot! While the town is small, there is still stuff to do, and you can use it as a base to see other cool things to do in Belize.

What was once a tiny fishing village is now a thriving town in southern Belize. However, Hopkins has maintained its small-town charm and laid-back Caribbean vibe that is usually reserved for the outlying islands.

Hopkins Beach is one of the best things to do in Belize

The village is known for its Garifuna culture. The culture is most apparent in its cuisine (try hudut! ) and its nightlife – you’ll likely hear drums and see dancing if you stick around after sunset.

Hopkins is also known for its large swath of pristine and uncrowded beaches. The incredible nature preserves the surrounding area, including the Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve and the South Water Marine Reserve off the coast.

Encompassing over 7,000 acres of pure wilderness, a visit to the Mayflower Bocawina National Parks is one of the best things to do in Belize for those who want to reconnect with nature. The park is situated at the base of the Maya Mountains in the Stann Creek District.

Woman swimming at Antelope Falls for things to do in Belize

There are endless ways to enjoy the national park, from trekking the short yet rewarding Bocawina Trail through the enchanting forest to ziplining through the area’s lush canopy. There are also several unexcavated Mayan Temple mounds with various structures, artifacts, and even some pyramids.

Antelope Waterfall at Mayflower Bocawina National Park for things to do in Belize

But one of the best things to do in Mayflower Bocawina National Park is chase waterfalls. In addition to the short and sweet Lower Bocawina Trail, there are several other trails—Antelope Falls was our favorite!

Along the way, you may encounter unique wildlife, including howler monkeys, big cats, tapir, and hundreds of different bird species.

→ Book this Zipline Adventure at Bocawina Rainforest

Known as the gem of the Emerald Valley, Billy Barquedier National Park preserves over 1,500 acres of tropical evergreen forest in central Belize. The hilly terrain here makes it a popular spot for hiking.

Head up to the observation tower at the highest point in the park via Jaguar Trail for a challenge. For something a little milder, you can hop on the Waterfall Trail. This easy 15-20 minute hike ends at a waterfall. Feel free to reward yourself with a dip in the pool at the end of the trail!

Things To Do in San Ignacio, Belize

Ruins and epic nature—That’s what you’ll get in San Ignacio, Belize ! There are two main easily accessible Mayan ruins to check out here, with a few others that are more far-reached. If you want to explore the jungles and caves or perhaps chase waterfalls, you’ll want to spend a few days here to see it all.

Consistently voted as the number one most sacred cave in the world by National Geographic , it should come as no surprise that a trip to Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the best things to do in Belize.

Skull at Actun Tunchil Muknal Cave for things to do in Belize

It’s safe to say that ATM (as it is often called) is unlike any other cave you’ve ever been to. It’s actually a Mayan archeological site, complete with ancient ceramics, stoneware, and even skeletons!

Because of its protected status, you must hire a licensed guide to enter ATM . Tours are not cheap (expect to fork out at least $100 per person), but rest assured, the high price point is worth it.

Depending on which guide you go with, you’ll have about eight hours to explore this stunning area, and the insider knowledge makes the whole experience much more interesting.

*Do note cameras are not allowed in the cave. See it as a good thing—You get to enjoy the adventure a bit more!

— 👉 TOP PICK — → Book this Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave Full-Day Tour

Get off the beaten path for a day and visit Caracol – a small swath of Mayan ruins on the border of Guatemala. The site marks the location of a long-since deserted city that was once larger than modern-day Belize City, with a population twice as large.

Caracol Mayan Ruins for things to do in Belize

These ancient ruins may not be as objectively impressive as other famous sites like Tikal or Tulum, but you can bet that they are a whole lot less crowded.

The sparse number of visitors is due mainly to Caracol’s remote location. The site sits inside Chiquibul National Park in the stunning Vaca Plateau, and you’ll need a 4×4 to get there.

One of the most popular ways to experience the ruins is by going on a tour , and prices are comparable to renting your own vehicle. As a bonus, most tours of Caracol also include a stop at the nearby natural pools (Rio On Pools), which are stunning and a must-visit too!

By now, you may have caught onto the fact that one of the best things to do in Belize is to discover the Mayan ruins. Unless you’re an avid ruin explorer or lover of Mayan history, you may not have time (or the desire) to see all of them – there are a LOT.

If you have time for just one, make it Xunantunich (pronounced shoo-nan-too-nitch) .

Xunantunich Mayan Ruins are a popular thing to do in Belize

Situated in the Cayo District of western Belize, Xunantunich is an easy day trip from San Ignacio. It’s also possible to reach the ruins from Belize City if you don’t plan on exploring more of the Cayo District.

Xunantunich is often considered the most impressive ruin site in Belize, with the towering main temple (El Castillo) and the lush rainforest surrounding it.

Often considered the best cave system in the entire country, Rio Frio Cave deserves a spot on every traveler’s Belizean bucket list. Situated in Mountain Pine Ridge in Belize’s Cayo district, this quarter-mile cave is the stuff of legends. You’ll start by entering through the cave’s wide entrance – no need to worry about claustrophobia here!

Rio Frio Cave is one of the best things to do in Belize

As you wander, you’ll see natural pools, soaring 70-foot arches, plenty of impressive stalactites, and even a few mini-falls! If the cave feels a bit divine, there’s a reason. Mayans once used this sanctified space to bury their dead.

Woman at Rio Frio Caves for things to do in Belize

This was one of the coolest caves I’ve been to but be warned that the road here is rough. We actually had to park about a half mile out and walk in because it got so bad for our regular two-wheel drive vehicle. If it’s been raining, either take a tour or avoid visiting.

While in Mountain Pine Ridge, don’t miss your chance to swim beneath the natural pools of a cascading waterfall. Rio On Pools is one of Belize’s most stunning outdoor playgrounds. The area features large granite bounders and tons of flowing water to play in.

The surrounding pine forests add to the idyllic feel, and the river banks make for a great spot to relax or enjoy a picnic after your swim sesh.

You may wonder how one of the country’s biggest waterfalls could still be considered a hidden gem! Big Rock Falls sits inside the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, and after ascending a series of wooden stairs, you will behold the jaw-dropping 150-foot falls.

Adrenaline junkies can jump from the cliff into the pool at the bottom of the waterfall, while those looking for a more relaxing experience can simply wade in. It’s a short hike in, but it’s down some steep rickety wooden steps, then across slippery boulders, so just be aware.

Things To Do in Caye Caulker, Belize

I KNOW this spot is on your list! Many people come with nothing else on their list of things to do in Belize except to visit Caye Caulker. If you want to feel like a castaway on a lost island but that also happens to have everything you need, then Caye Caulker is the place to go!

This is a tiny island, but it packs a lot of punch. In fact, I can see why people get “lost” here and stay for longer than they expected to.

One of the most popular things to do in Belize is to spend a day (at least) at Caye Caulker. And this area is beloved for a good reason.

The sun-soaked island dishes out tropical vibes in spades, with impossibly blue Caribbean waters, sandy shores, and epic bars slinging buckets of Belikins throughout the day and into the evening.

One of the best spots to get rowdy on Caye Caulker is the Split at Lazy Lizard – a popular party spot where you can swim in the warm water, listen to live music, and sip on tasty cocktails. Locals tend to steer clear of this area, but it’s a great place to meet fellow travelers.

Lest you get the wrong idea, Caye Caulker is more than just a party island. You can also rent bikes or golf carts to explore the isle or get on the water and kayak, snorkel, fish, or sail. There’s even a manatee preservation site off the nearby Swallow Caye!

When you hear about beach bars on Caye Caulker, you’ll definitely hear about Sip n Dip! The cute bar is right next door to the popular Lazy Lizard. The dock comes with swings, in-water tables, and an epic beer garden. Need I say more?

Considering there’s no real beach here in Caye Caulker (I know, weird, right?!), this is probably the best place to chill!

Obviously, the massive reef off the coast of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye draws divers in hoards, and the marine life here is truly incredible. There are many places to dive and snorkel across the island , but one of the best spots is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley.

This underwater park is home to a vibrant array of critters, including rays, tons of tropical fish, colorful sponges, and moray eels. Tours of this area are available from Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. Other noteworthy areas for diving include Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos, among others.

Things to Do in Ambergris Caye/San Pedro, Belize

Belize has hundreds of islands sitting just off its coastline, but Ambergris Caye is the largest. The Mayans once inhabited this 25-mile-long islet, but today it serves as a gateway to the incredible barrier reef surrounding it.

If Caye Caulker is too chill and not exciting enough for you, San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is for you.

If you prefer to stay above water, there are plenty of other great ways to experience Ambergris Caye. San Pedro is the island’s main city.

It’s home to gorgeous beaches, luxury hotels, and vibrant bars and restaurants. There are also tons of epic events and markets in San Pedro. No matter what time of year you visit, there’s sure to be something fun going on.

The infamous Chicken Drop, which used to be at Wahoo’s Lounge, is now at Corona del Mar Hotel. And it’s one of the most unique events on the island. Essentially, you are betting on chicken poop. Yes, seriously.

Every Thursday night, crowds gather to place bets (BZD$1 per ticket) on which square the designated chicken will do its business on, and if you guess right, you could win BZD$100!

Even if you couldn’t hypothesize the chosen square, the DJ and the hyped-up crowd make Thursday nights an experience you won’t want to miss.

For souvenirs and trinkets, check out San Pedro’s Artisan Market. Tucked away on Back Street, this unassuming marketplace is so much more than just your average shopping experience. There are hand-crafted items like baskets, wood carvings, art, and conch shell work.

Food options are also nearby, from fresh tortillas to fresh fruit stands and even a cute ramen shop! Take your time perusing this area, treasures are hidden everywhere!

Secret Beach is a not-so-clandestine swatch of sand on the lovely Ambergris Caye. Even though the cat has long since been out of the bag on this one, a visit to Secret Beach is one of the best things to do in Belize.

belize main tourist attractions

In fact, my fav spot to chill was called the Pirate’s Not So Secret Beach Bar—At least they are real about it not being so secret anymore.

Situated about 7 miles north of San Pedro Town, this popular spot is a hub for water sports, drinking and dining, and good old-fashioned beach bumming.

With all this said, it’s still a drive to get here, I recommend renting a golf cart and taking the 30-min bumpy ride out here. So this inevitably keeps the crowds at bay.

TIP: Want to meet locals? Pick them up on your way out here if you’re driving your own golf cart! We picked up two on our way out, Nancy and Pablo. They hitchhike out to the beach every day to sell their trinkets and braid hair. Good convos for you and a ride for them—win win!

After a day at Secret Beach, stop by the Truck Stop on your way back into town. This lively area is the island’s first and only shipping container food park and beer garden, and it is THE place to be on evenings in San Pedro. There are also games, a pool and swim-up bar, and an 18-foot movie screen.

They have events like movie night and comedy night, and it is overall a very fun place to eat, drink, and chill! Check here for their current events.

Divers would be hard-pressed to find a better place to explore the country’s marine life than Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The reserve is a 3-mile outcrop off of Ambergris Caye with access to part of the incredible Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef in the whole world.

Dive below the surface to discover colorful coral gardens and an array of wildlife. This small area is densely populated, so your chances for peeping at unique marine life are good. Common sitings include sea turtles, nurse sharks, sting rays, eels, and schools of colorful fish.

In addition to the reef, snorkelers can also discover the other sections of the reserve, including the mangroves, the seagrass beds, and the most recent addition, Shark Alley. You can even dive into underwater caves if you can hold your breath long enough!

Visiting this marine reserve is often included with any snorkeling trip you book around Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye. In fact, you can do this with the same snorkeling tour I mentioned above . It’s a FULL day of exploring all of the best spots in the area!

— 👉 TOP PICK — → Book this Snorkeling Tour of Shark Alley

Drift Inn San Pedro   – If you’re planning a lot of water-based activities, this is the hotel for you. On-site there’s a large dock stretching over the ocean, plus a tour shop to help you organize everything. For the budget conscious, there are dorms as well as private rooms.

Ramon’s Village Resort   – This hotel is exactly what you envision when you think of an island holiday. Stay in a private thatch roof cabana with direct access to lush tropical gardens and stunning blue waters. This is also a resort that is on one of the best beaches in Belize!

Things To Do in Belize—Anywhere You Go!

Going slow, chilling on the beach, and eating amazing food can be done almost anywhere in the country. Don’t miss the opportunity to have the best seafood you’ve ever had and leave your anxiety at home! You aren’t allowed to go too fast in Belize…

One of the best ways to get a feel for a new place is to taste the local grub. Belizean cuisine is an eclectic mix of fresh seafood, Caribbean flare, and native tradition. This makes for a delicious sampling, so dig in and don’t be shy!

Local food is one of the best things to do in Belize

Some classic Belizean dishes you won’t want to miss include pibil tacos made with pit-roasted pork, tamales, and stewed chicken. Rice and bean meals are also a classic, and you can add Marie Sharps hot sauce if you want to heat things up, you’ll see her bottles of hot sauce on every table in the country!

Of course, seafood is also a popular menu item when you’re this close to the sea. Ceviche, made with lobster, conch, and fish is the perfect accompaniment to an ice-cold Belikin (Belize’s national beer) on a hot day.

Hudut is another popular fish dish made with coconut milk and served with a mashed plantain ball. I literally didn’t have a bad meal in Belize—everything was SO good!

One of the very best things to do in Belize is, well, absolutely nothing! Of course, this activity is best performed on one of the country’s breathtaking beaches.

Other Things to Do in Belize

Here are a few more things to do in Belize, but they didn’t fit under a certain area. The best way to do these activities is to rent a car and get here yourself (more on this soon) or just make life easy and book a tour.

Thanks to its convenient location just 30 miles outside of Belize City, Altun Ha is one of the most popular things to do in Belize. The Mayan site features a collection of well-preserved temples, tombs, and pyramids.

If you can handle the hike up to the top of the tallest temple, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Altun Ha and its vast nature.

Altun Ha sees more visitors than the Caracol Ruins, but it’s also much more accessible.

You’ll likely hear the screech of howler monkeys if you spend any time at Xunantunich. But if you want to get up close and personal with these cute primates, check out the Community Baboon Sanctuary.

Situated just 30 minutes from Belize City, the sanctuary preserves the howler monkeys’ natural habitat and allows visitors to experience them in the wild.

The beautiful rainforest that encompasses the sanctuary is gorgeous in its own right, and you’ll likely see other impressive flora and fauna during your visit, in addition to the baboons. You can book a sanctuary tour or drive there yourself if you rent a car.

Belize’s Blue Hole is one of the country’s most iconic attractions. As the name suggests, this site is literally a giant blue hole. It might not sound like much, but this massive void is so large and deep that it’s visible all the way from space!

Aerial view of Blue Hole one of the best things to do in Belize

Situated off the barrier reef, the Blue Hole was created around 10,000 years ago when the roof of a limestone cave collapsed. Today, it’s both a bucket-list dive site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Unlike the other popular scuba diving spots around Belize, the Blue Hole offers little marine life. While you will likely see your fair share of sharks, diving here is all about the stalactites and stalagmites. This was once a cave, after all!

Diving at Blue Hole is one of the best things to do in Belize

Diving here is not for novices and is extremely dangerous, even for seasoned scuba divers. To descend the depth of the hole, you’ll need your PADI Advanced Open Water certification.

If you lack the proper training for scuba diving, you can always snorkel near the surface of the Blue Hole. You won’t see the remnants of the cave, but you claim you swam here! For those with deep pockets and a fear of open water, helicopter tours take you above the Blue Hole for a bird’s eye view.

Not to be confused with the Blue Hole dive site, St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park sits just outside the capital city (Belmopan) in the center of Belize.

belize main tourist attractions

The park is a masterclass on Belizean biodiversity. The lush jungle is filled with hundreds of species of birds and other exotic creatures like tapir, jaguars, armadillos, ocelots, and more.

There are also ancient caves once used by the Mayans for ceremonies and rituals. But the biggest draw to the park is the big blue sinkhole for which the area was named. The sinkhole is connected to a river, making the park popular for tubing and swimming on warm days.

This is one of the few places in Belize’s wild interior where you don’t need a guide. The trails are easy to follow, and there are changing rooms next to the Blue Hole if you want to take a dip.

For a hefty dose of Mayan history and culture, there’s no better place than Lamanai . Mayans inhabited this abandoned city for over 3,000 years, making it the longest-inhabited Mayan city worldwide.

Jaguar Temple at Lamanai Archaelogical Reserve one of the best things to do in Belize

In addition to the large temples and structures, you’ll also see ancient artifacts at this archaeological reserve, including petroglyphs, pottery, and ancient figurines.

If that wasn’t enough to entice you to visit, then the incredible scenery surrounding it should do the trick. To access the reserve, you’ll need to take an hour-long ride up the New River, where you’ll likely encounter crocodiles and sun-basking iguanas.

The site is surrounded by dense jungle and a lagoon, making a beautiful backdrop for the abandoned city.

So, with all these things to do in Belize, you might be wondering what you can do within a certain time frame. Here are some sample itineraries I’ve made for you to give you a good idea of what you can fit in during your time.

Best Beaches in Belize

  • One week in Belize – I’d take a couple of days to visit the San Ignacio area, where you can explore ruins and the caves, then spend the rest of the time in either Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye.
  • Two weeks in Belize – Do the above and then add on a few days basking on the beaches of a resort in Placencia, spend a day in Hopkins, and throw in some waterfalls at Bocawina and Cockscomb.
  • Three weeks + in Belize – It would be a bit busy, but you could get through pretty much everything on this list!

For reference, I went in November! But here’s a quick overview of the different seasons to help you plan your visit:

  • Dry Season (November to April): This is generally considered the best time to visit Belize. The weather is pleasant, with lower humidity and little rainfall. The temperatures are comfortable, ranging from the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (24-29°C). But this is the peak tourist season, so accommodations and activities may be pricier. This is the best time for diving or snorkeling.
  • Green Season (May to October): Also known as the “rainy season.” While it does see more rainfall and higher humidity, it can still be a good time to visit if you want to take advantage of lower prices and fewer tourists. The rainforest is lush and vibrant during this time. Just be prepared for occasional heavy rain showers, especially in June and July. Keep in mind diving and snorkeling won’t be at their best, and boat rides could be unpleasant.
  • Hurricane Season (June to November): Belize falls within the hurricane-prone area of the Caribbean, with the highest risk of hurricanes occurring between August and October.

Here are some reminders on what to pack for your trip to Belize!

  • Dry Bag : Protect your belongings from unexpected rain or water activities by bringing a dry bag. It’s also useful for keeping your essentials dry during boat trips or rainy hikes! I never travel without one.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Reduce plastic waste and bring a water bottle you can refill or, better yet, a water bottle that can filter water! Don’t drink the tap water.
  • Insect Repellent : Insect repellent is a must. Warning: horror story below on WHY!
  • Sarong : Save space in your luggage with a compact and quick-drying sarong. It’s perfect for beach days, cover up, skirt etc. I never travel without a sarong.
  • Headlamp or Compact Flashlight: Exploring caves or taking a stroll after dinner back to your hotel, these always come in handy!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch or GoPro : There are too many boat, snorkeling, and diving opportunities to not get pictures underwater.
  • Travel Insurance : Not a physical item, but crucial nonetheless. Ensure you have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and unexpected incidents. Here’s what I use .
  • Sunscreen : This one is a given but definitely don’t forget, it will be more expensive in Belize plus you should get reefsafe sunscreen!

Belize Travel Tips

Before you head off on your Central American getaway, check out these Belizean travel tips to make the most out of your vacay.

Most travelers do not need a visa to enter Belize, so long as your trip is 30 days or shorter.

Belize requires visitors to pay a departure tax when leaving the country. Fees range between US$20-50. Check your airline ticket to see if this tax is included in your trip.

The exchange rate is straightforward to remember if you’re coming from the US. The Belizean Dollar and the USD are fixed currencies. So, no matter what, every US dollar will equal almost 2 Belizean dollars. No need to whip out the calculator or guestimate how much you’re truly spending!

Belizean dollars for things to do in Belize

Belize boasts balmy conditions year-round thanks to the subtropical climate, but warm weather doesn’t always mean sunny skies. If you want great weather as you explore the jungles or bum on the beach, book your trip for the dry season – between December and May.

Sunloungers on Secret Beach one of the beaches in Belize

With that said, this is the tropics, and checking the weather is almost pointless. Before heading to San Pedro, I was checking the weather, and it was 100% raining all three days we were there according to the weather.

Every day we were there was bright and sunny. It rained for all of 5 minutes at night each night, that was it! So don’t trust the weather predictions too much.

Almost every national park or reserve will cost you about 10 Belizian dollars (US$5) to enter, and they will likely only accept cash.

If you’re chasing waterfalls, heading into the jungle, or even just going for a beach stroll at sunset, you’ll need GOOD bug spray . The bugs were pretty vicious, especially on our hikes, and I had bite marks for over a week. It’s not just mosquitos either, sand fly and botfly bites are brutal!

No, seriously, Garrett had to get LARVE removed from his leg after Belize. He got really bad botfly bites that left a larve worm in the bites. It went unknown for a week or two, and a doctor had to surgically cut them out of his leg. It was horrifying. Bring all the spray!

Belizean cuisine is highly influenced by its native roots and the natural resources available. This means your tastebuds will be in heaven for your trip.

Plate of local food is one of the best things to do in Belize

Fresh seafood dishes like lobster and conch ceviche or the coconut fish stew ( hudut ) are must-tries, while meat lovers can indulge in classics like stewed chicken and conchita pibil – a slow-roasted pork dish served on fresh flour tortillas.

Tipping culture in Belize isn’t as hardcore as stateside, but it’s encouraged! Depending on the type of place you’re dining (or drinking), a tip of 10-20% is standard. Some establishments automatically charge a 10% service fee and add it to your bill, so check your receipt carefully.

Big Titty Rum Bar one of the things to do in Belize

Surprisingly, Belize was way more “card-friendly” than I had thought. Even the lady serving us our hudut in the small Belizian town of Hopkins that only had 2 tables at her restaurant on the beach accepted cards as payment! Make sure you’re using the right travel card .

With this said, always have cash on you because you will inevitably visit a store and restaurant that’s cash only.

I “dared” to walk away from Garrett a few times and was cat-called almost endlessly. They continued even as I was down and across the street. It was—annoying. To say the least. Street harassment isn’t new to me, but I got used to not dealing with it since I’m with Garrett often.

How to Get Around Belize

belize main tourist attractions

TRANSPORTATION TIP

If you’re looking for bus or boat tickets around Central America and Mexico, you can easily book them online! Check Availability

There’s no one size fits all solution to getting around Belize. It all depends on where you are, where you’re going, and how comfortable you want to be.

Bicycles at Caye Caulker Beach one of the best beaches in Belize

Taxi drivers are always available if you prefer to leave the driving to the professionals. Drivers will drive you virtually anywhere in the country where their vehicle can go for a price. There are no meters in Belizean taxis, so agree on a price with your driver ahead of time.

You will have to use a service, perhaps through your hotel, as there aren’t taxis just roaming around with the exception of maybe Belize City, but you don’t really want to spend any time there. It’s not the safest, nor is there anything to do.

Driving around Belize is a great way to get around the country if you’re sticking to the main areas. If you want to journey off-trail a bit, though, things can get a bit tricky.

Undeveloped roads abound, and potholes and unannounced speed bumps are also common. You’ll likely need a vehicle with 4-wheel drive to go to far-to-reach places, which can be expensive to rent and fill up.

Driving on dirt road to things to do in Belize

We rented a regular vehicle, and while we were able to do a lot of dirt-road sections, we couldn’t make it out to Caracol and even had to park and hike in to a few of the attractions because the road simply got too rough to continue.

With that said, renting a car was 100% the way to go and offered us tons of freedom to explore!

We rented our car from Crystal Auto Rental, and they were probably the nicest and easiest car rental company we have ever used. No hassle, no pushy insurance spiel, no headaches returning the car… You can also check here for current car rental deals .

Driving was also very easy and chill throughout our time in Belize. The main roads were all paved and what you’d be used to at home, except with many speedbumps everywhere.

Once you’re off the main road, you’re in the dirt! Potholes and rocks, but our regular vehicle made it through just fine. Be careful after it rains, though! Those dirt roads become almost impassable.

Belize has tons of cayes off the coast; to access them, you’ll need to hop on a ferry – also known as a water taxi. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are the most popular spots off the mainland.

belize main tourist attractions

A few large ferries operate between the islands and Belize City multiple times a day. Prices are reasonable, and the journey isn’t too bad. Here’s how to get from Belize City to San Pedro or Caye Caulker. You can also search and book your tickets here .

You can even get to Mexico from San Pedro via a ferry which is what we did. It saved us a whole day and many hours on boats, taxis, and buses!

Once you get to the islands, you’ll need a way to get around. Cars aren’t really a thing on either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, so golf carts have the lion’s share of the transportation market on both cayes. Taxi service via a golf cart is also available on both islands if you don’t plan on renting one yourself.

Using your own two feet or renting a bike on the islands is just fine too! We walked everywhere on Caye Caulker and San Pedro, except for renting a golf cart for one day just to head to Secret Beach.

Golf cart rental for things to do in Belize

Bus travel is also an option; this is a great way to get around if you’re on a budget. This is one for the more adventurous travelers.

Re-purposed US school buses are the norm, and don’t get re-purposed confused with refurbished. The technology and comforts are as basic as they come, but hey, it’s all part of the experience. Most major cities have bus terminals, and even small villages have bus stops.

Rather than paying when you get on, a conductor will come around and ask where you’re going and provide you with a ticket. Fares are cheap and only cash is accepted, so have small change ready.

Alternatively, if you want more comfort, fewer stops, and even a pick up and drop off from your hotel, just book a shuttle! Find shuttles around Belize here .

13 best Things To Do On Belize’s Mainland

Belize has some things you can’t do anywhere else in the world. Not only does it have beautiful beaches but it also has some of the most incredible culture, adventures and of course neature.

belize main tourist attractions

Belize is one of those places that can click all boxes of reasons to travel and if you go please stay on the mainland.  A lot of people land in Belize and travel directly to Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker but don’t visit the much of the mainland as they want the beaches, ocean and bars.

However, those people miss out on 50%+ of all the incredible things Belize has to offer so if you want a truly memorable time vs. just laying on a beach… get excited.

You can go to a beach and drink in many places in the world… but Belize offers so much more culture and adventure that not everyone knows about and you absolutely have to see! Belize is arguably one of the best places to see out of anywhere in the Caribbean or Central America.

Visit Mayan Ruins

belize main tourist attractions

It’s not often you can hike to the top of ruins or get so close immersing yourself in rich incredible history.  With a multitude of ruins there are plenty of options for you scattered throughout the country all offering something unique.

Mayan ruins are some of my favorite things on earth, you walk into the area and often are just hit with this feeling of history and mystique that take you back in time like not many things can. If you have never seen Apocalypto then it is a MUST watch before you go to Belize or Mexico.

Anyways… for ruins to visit, Caracol and Xunantunich are probably the more prolific of the ruins but Lubaantun, Altun Ha and Cahal Pech all have their charm and mystique.

See as many as you can if you are staying in the area for a while. San Ignacio can be a great hub to stay in to see a few of the great ones!.

Cahal Pech Archaeological Preserve is within the town of San Ignacio and a great walk from downtown. Xunantunich is one of the more amazing Mayan Ruins on earth with your ability to walk to the top and see 360 views of the jungle.

Lubaantun is in the SouthWest, Altun Ha is North of Belize City and Caracol is on the West tip of the country.

If you really want to go crazy, and I would if you have time, go across the border into Guatemala to Tikal, which is one of the best Mayan Ruins on earth.

The distance from San Ignacio to Tikal is only 2 hours, so definitely try to get there if you have time and check another country visit off your list!

Placencia Peninsula

belize main tourist attractions

Placencia is arguably the beach lovers gem in maybe all of Belize. With large white sand beaches for miles and gorgeous water it is no wonder people skip the Caye’s and stay in Placencia.

The town itself is a quaint little village with plenty of charm, restaurants, bars and opportunities for excursions.

The beaches on some of the main tourist islands don’t have the width or length Placencia has so if you are worried that you might miss out on beaches by staying on the mainland, don’t worry, they are great there too!

Furthermore, per another tip coming, you can take excursions to some great beaches for a day of relaxation on white sand beaches. For top things to do in Placencia see here.

Actun Tunichil Muknal

belize main tourist attractions

One of the more unique things I have ever done and it is even ranked as the most sacred cave in the world with skeletons intact from around 700-900 AD.

Wade through water-filled caves, go spelunking see century old skeletons and artifacts all while learning about the incredible history of the region.

The walk to the cave through the jungle is also beautiful, not to mention the cave itself is unreal beaming with crystalline stalactites and stalagmites.

While it is unique I have to say I did find it a little busy with tons of groups going through it non-stop. With a $120+ per person cost I was hoping it would be a touch more private vs. seeing over 100 people and it being a lot of hurry up and wait.

If I could go solo or with a friend and breeze through it then it is a 10/10 experience but add in the busy factor and I give it a 8/10. With that said, if you have never done anything like this than you absolutely have to go as it is once in a lifetime.

A ton of people have described the ATM Cave as one of the best experiences they have ever done so definitely don’t let me hold you back! I already feel like a taking things for granted asshole for even writing what I just wrote… so don’t listen to me, go check it out.

You purchase tours through any of the licensed guides who take you and your group throughout the 8 hour adventure. Cameras are not allowed as a tourist broke an artifact dropping a camera on it thus phones and cameras are now banned.

Ocean Excursions – Sail, Deep Sea Fish or Snorkel With Sharks, Manatees, Stingrays & Turtles

belize main tourist attractions

I have snorkeled in 15+ countries and never been surrounded by all of these majestic animals! Shark & Ray alley was one of my favorite water locations on earth!   If you love to fish then be sure to get out there with some pretty affordable fishing trips.

I went snorkeling and it was definitely the most amazing snorkeling excursion I have ever done. I saw multiple different enormous stingrays, including one giant like I have never seen before and a spotted eagle ray!

On top of that there were nurse sharks, huge sea turtles, tons of beautiful fish and giant starfish. If snorkeling isn’t your thing then just take a nice relaxing sailing trip out to the beautiful islands, some of which I still see to this date on my TV screen saver.

The excursions themselves are normally under $100, however be sure to check what type of boat you will be on as 1 hour on a tin speedboat isn’t the most comfortable.

Go Tubing Through Caves

belize main tourist attractions

Not many countries offer a tubing trip through caves so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity!   There are many options near San Ignacio or on the way to the city from Belize City or Placencia.  Nohoch Che’en is just outside of Belmopan.

Barton Creek Cave and Rio Frio Cave are close to San Ignacio. It is a great time and you can sneakily bring some drinks for your trip along the way. What could be better, beautiful views, water, the jungle and in a tube with a drink in your hand in the middle of Belize!

Day Trip To Caye’s (Islands)

belize main tourist attractions

There are plenty of stunning options to be whisked away to a picture perfect island in the middle of nowhere. Whether you want to snorkel, play beach volleyball, kayak or just relax you should definitely take a day to enjoy the islands.

As mentioned above Shark & Ray Alley was one of the coolest places I have seen with so much marine life. However, you don’t have to snorkel if you don’t want to as there are multiple excursions that will take you to a deserted island somewhere in paradise!

Tip: Make sure you check what kind of boat you are taking as a sailboat is a lot more relaxing than a speed boat.

Stay In One Of the Best Hotels I Have Ever Come Across

belize main tourist attractions

Naia Resort and Spa was one of the best values of any hotels I have ever seen.  For the price compared to competitors it was hands down the best hotel experience I have had. It wasn’t cheap but it was worth spending for your own bungalow hut with private pool and outdoor shower.

The grounds were amazing and the staff was perfect, they even got you coconuts or set up hammocks whenever you’d like.  If you are spending $150-200 USD on a hotel it is hands down worth spending a touch more to stay here to make your vacation one of the most memorable you’ll have.

If I was the hotel I would increase rates 50-100% compared to other hotels in the area and their cost to benefit. I always mention that spending a little extra for an experience is always worth it.

Yes, you may spend $200-400 more than you wanted on a hotel… however you will make $200-400 surely tens of thousands of times in your life… you may never be back in Belize or have an opportunity for a hotel like this again to make your vacation once in a lifetime.

Hike, Visit A National Park Or Jaguar Preserve

belize main tourist attractions

Belize offers a ton of nature opportunities for adventure lovers and hikers. There is amazing wildlife to see, nature to experience and waterfalls to checkout as you find your way in this incredible country.

Cocksbomb Basin is a great place to visit and is the world’s only jaguar preserve.

It also has the best jungle hiking trails in the country. Cockscomb is a nature lover’s haven set into the jungle with a plethora of wildlife housing pumas, vultures ocelots, tapirs, armadillos, otters along with countless birds.

Explore San Ignacio

belize main tourist attractions

San Ignacio is one of my favorite cities in Central America.  It is an adventurers paradise with over a weeks worth of things to do and see. The town itself is a cultural hot spot making you feel like you definitely have found yourself somewhere unique and mysterious.

If you have ever been to Asia it reminds me of Chiang Mai. While maybe not as amazing as Chiang Mai I meant it has the same idea of being a hub for so much culture and adventure.

San Ignacio is not just the gateway to the infamous ATM caves as it offers a ton of things to do for all vacationers.

There is cave tubing, waterfall seeking, jungle treks, village visits, cooking classes, kayaking, zip-lining, paintball, horseback riding and you can even go to Guatemala!

The San Ignacio market is a fun bustling market to get all sorts of goodies and purchase some cheap amazing local fruit. One of my favorite things about Latin America or Asia is that you can buy exotic fruit for 1/10th the price that it is in the USA.

belize main tourist attractions

It has a nice little downtown with all the shops, restaurants and bars on the street to enjoy your time. There are some amazing restaurants to try as like Guava Limb Cafe, Ko-Ox Han-nah or Cahal Pech Village Resort for the sweeping views alone.

By chance we decided to walk to Cahal Pech to see the ruins that are just about a 30 minute walk from the city center. On the way there was an amazing little park with people playing all sorts of sports and games.

There also was this amazing wall stretching for 100 yards with inspirational art.

belize main tourist attractions

There are tons of good hotel options for all price ranges. Cahal Pech Village Resort is absolutely stunning on the hillside with amazing views and pools.

Other good options are Midas Belize, San Ignacio Resort Hotel, Sweet Songs Jungle Lodge, Ka’ana Resort and Tia Maria Guesthouse.  Surely you will have an amazing time in San Ignacio with the plethora of options to do, it truly is one of the best cities to visit.

Chase Waterfalls

belize main tourist attractions

There are a plethora of amazing waterfalls throughout the country. If you want to hike then this country is a great place to get a little exercise chasing waterfalls and seeing nature in all of its glory.

A couple that you must see if you have time are Thousand Foot Falls and Mayan King Falls. There are also a ton of little hikes or walks off the roads such as the aforementioned Maya King waterfall. For Maya King we rented a car and had this pretty place all to ourselves!

Visit the Belize Zoo / Conservatory

The closest I have ever been to some incredible predators. If this place was in the USA there would be an accident a day by an ignorant person getting too close to a cage.

It only takes 30-60 minutes to go through it if you want to quickly. I wouldn’t go out of your way to see it but it is on the way to San Ignacio and Placencia so if you can pull over then definitely do it.

I would give the zoo a 3/5 and it is borderline worth $20 a person.  It’s worth to check out the Jaguar and some other neat animals like pumas and ocelots.

I would give the zoo a smaller ranking but it is the only zoo you can get incredibly close to the animals and they are very easy to see, not hidden in a cave or far away.

belize main tourist attractions

All animals were saved so it is truly a conservation center with all animals being native to Belize and unable to survive in the wild. If you have some time… I think you should stop by it.

Plus they have beer and a homemade restaurant where I had some of the best Caribbean Brown Stew Chicken I have ever had! I loved it so much I started making it back at home, per this recipe here!

Eat & Drink

belize main tourist attractions

Belize is a foodie and drinkie paradise with tons of things to try that are unique to the area.  Summer is lobster season, and the Belizean have their versions of brown stew chicken as well as curry that is to die for. With a large Carribean and Jamaican influence the food you will get here is incredible.

I loved Belizean Food So Much I Brought Back Their Jamaican Inspired Brown Stewed Chicken Recipe

Furthermore, when in Rome… you need to drink rum always as well as their local beer Belikan. I am not a huge rum drinker but the price is right along with the taste and different methods they can prepare the drink to please the masses.

Belikan kinda grinds my gears as the bottle is 50% glass vs. beer but I digress.

Fly Over the Blue Hole

belize main tourist attractions

I never did this on my trip and have heard mixed reviews. While it is gorgeous it also is a pretty penny to just fly over something you don’t get to experience up close.

Apparently diving in the hole isn’t great either as it is quite dark. It looks breathtaking but for the cost it truly is up to what you are into. If you are in Belize City with some time then do it as it looks stunning.

Must-See Tourist Attractions in Belize

Belize is a tropical country tucked on the eastern coast of Central America and is known for its majestic mountains, exquisitely clear beaches, and sunny weather. Like many other countries around the world, Belize is a bucket list destination that has several popular tourist attractions that are a must-see when traveling to the coastal country.

The Great Blue Hole

If you are fascinated by mysterious natural phenomena, you should have a look at the Great Blue Hole situated a few miles from the coast of Belize. This massive underwater sink water hole is one of the largest of its kind. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with its surrounding areas on the coast in 1996. The Hole is so remarkable that it remains one of the world’s most distinguished scuba sites.

If you are a tourist that enjoys experiencing zoos from various countries, the Belize zoo is a must-visit. The zoo is 29 acres, making it relatively small compared to its counterparts, however, it boasts numerous animals of which some are only native to central America. The Belize zoo is a perfect outing for families with children because it’s filled with great activities especially created for the young. The zoo also consists of numerous accommodations ranging from cabanas, dorms, guest houses, and cabins. Other zoo activities include Sibun river canoe trips, savanna nature trails, and nocturnal zoo tours.

Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Jaguars are the largest cats native to the Americas and in Belize, these magnificent creatures have a monopoly over their land. The best place to catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures is at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary was founded in the 1980s with the aim of protecting endangered species native to Belize. The sanctuary has also welcomed a number of other species including pumas, otters, and native birds. If you happen to be an avid hiker, the sanctuary has some trails to explore too.

Located along the west bank of the New River Lagoon, Lamanai is one of the oldest inhabited archaeological zones in the Mayan World. The archaeological park is the second largest site in Belize, covering about 860 acres/384 hectares. The word Lamanai means submerged crocodile in Mayan and the name is fitting because what you will encounter at the site are some artifacts depicting representations of crocodiles along with some other interesting pieces of history to marvel at.

Caye Caulker

About 20 miles north of Belize City, lies Caye Caulker, a 4-mile island with sunny beaches that are known for its hidden snorkeling and scuba diving spots. The island remains mostly unoccupied by the locals, and as for tourists, they prefer to visit the restaurants and shops located at the northern tip of the island. Other water activities available at the Caye Caulker Island include sailing, kayaking, and fishing.

Belize has many other amazing tourist attractions that will resonate with different types of people who love everything from seeing the sights to playing at grandrush.com . Whether you enjoy nature, water, shopping, eating, or site-seeing, Belize offers everything and more. Spoil yourself on your next holiday trip and visit Belize to experience a thrilling tropical adventure.

12 Best Belize Tourist Attractions

The best Belize tourist attractions include a large number of Mayan ruins in addition to its famous cave tubing.

Belize is both an ecotourism destination as well as a popular cruise destination at Belize City on the Caribbean coast. It also is one of the few Caribbean destinations to promote caving as a major tourist attraction.

Another famous thing to do is the barrier reef, which is 185 miles long. Islands lie between the reef and the mainland, creating many opportunities for watersports, especially diving and snorkeling.

1) Cave Tubing

Cave tubing is a unique tourist attraction in Belize and one of the top excursions in the Caribbean . Cruise and resort visitors will take a somewhat lengthy ride into the countryside, followed by a hike through the rainforest to reach the Sibun River Cave Branch.

Once there, they jump into uniquely beautiful lime green water, pop through a tube and float down the river and through dark caves for about 1.5 hours. The caves include the location of Mayan rituals and cave drawings. Excursion prices range from $50 to $100 or more depending on amenities.

We found it was one of our favorite attractions in the Caribbean and a great family experience.

2) Belize Zoo

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center sits on 29 acres of tropical savanna and displays more than 170 animals. The animals represent 45 species that are native to Belize. The zoo acquires animals that are rescued, orphaned, rehabilitated, born there or sent there. The zoo is 31 miles from Belize City and attracts nearly 70,000 visitors a year.

3) Altun Ha

The Maya site is near Rockstone Pond Village in the Belize District. It is about 55 minutes north of the Belize City cruise port .

Altun Ha is the most excavated Mayan site in Belize . It was a major ceremonial center and a trade center that connected the Caribbean coastline with other Maya centers in the interior of the country. The site has two main plazas with some thirteen temple and residential structures. Excursion prices start at $95.

The Mayan ruins of Lamanai, more than two hours northwest of Belize City, are among the most famous and easily visited archeological sites in Belize. Most tourists experience the “place of the crocodile” by taking a guided boat trip up the New River to where Lamanai is located on the New River lagoon.

Its situation near an abundant and stable water source may explain why this city was inhabited longer than any other Mayan site (up until the 18th century).

Crocodiles are a prominent subject of sculptures and carvings from Lamanai and were considered sacred by the city’s inhabitants. Although they were undoubtedly more common during Mayan times, they are still occasionally seen on New River boat trips.

Excursion prices of $130 are common.

5) Actun Tunichil Muknal

Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the most popular Mayan burial sites in western Belize.

It is a cave system several kilometers long that consists of several large chambers. It contains four skeletons, stoneware and ceramics left by the Maya. One famous skeleton of a young girl has a sparkling appearance as a result of the cave’s natural processes.

Visitors will hike about 45 minutes to reach the cave and spend several hours exploring and wading through waters inside and outside of the cave. The site is an hour and 45 minutes southwest of Belize City.

6) Crooked Tree Lagoon

A pleasant, tropical lake with prominent birdlife, the Crooked Tree Lagoon is an excellent site in Belize for folks interested in birding and wildlife viewing during a pleasant boat ride. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded in the area of the lagoon and animals such as caimans and iguanas are also frequently seen.

It’s close enough to Belize City (a 40 minute drive from the airport) to visit as a day trip but far enough from the city to experience friendly, relaxed and rural Belize. Most tour operators can arrange boat tours of the lagoon or visitors can simply show up in the village of Crooked Tree and arrange one on their own.

7) The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary or Jaguar Preserve

Jaguars are the largest wild cat in the Americas and have become rare in many parts of their range. Belize has always been fortunate to have a dense population of these shy, big cats but during the 1970s and 1980s hunting was reducing their numbers.

After field studies by Alan Rabinowitz showed that jaguars did not present a threat to people or livestock in Belize and that their numbers were declining, the Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the jungles of the Maya Mountains to help protect these beautiful cats. Although jaguars occur in the preserve, visitors will be lucky to see one because of their timid nature.

They will certainly come across a wide variety of other rainforest animals, however, especially so if visiting with a local guide. The preserve can be a bit hard to get to but will be well worth it for people interested in experiencing one of the most remote and wildest rainforests in Belize.

8) Canoeing, rafting, and kayaking the Mopan River

The Mopan River flows out of the northern part of the Maya Mountains in Belize and eventually runs into the Belize River. As it rushes out of the mountains, this scenic, tropical waterway becomes dotted with class two and three rapids.

Various tour operators run guided rafting and kayaking trips to experience these quick and exciting stretches of the Mopan, but canoes are also available for folks looking for a more relaxing time on the river.

They can be rented in the nearby town of San Ignacio to float and paddle easily accessible and calmer sections of the Mopan. Although this river doesn’t pass through pristine jungle, the scenery includes quaint, riverside farms, big Green Iguanas in the trees, and screeching flocks of parakeets.

9) Belize City

Museum of Belize, built as a colonial prison in the mid-1800s, has a permanent exhibit of ancient Maya pottery as well as displays on the history of Belize City and Belize’s Maya history.

Baron Bliss Lighthouse Monument at Fort George Point, standing over the harbor entrance, was built from money donated to the country by the 5th baron of Portugal. Baron Bliss was entombed in front of the lighthouse, which he designed himself before his death.

St John’s Cathedral is the oldest building in Belize as well as the oldest Anglican Church in Central America. Slaves built the cathedral in the 1800s from bricks brought to Belize as ballast in the hulls of ships sailing from Europe. After the church was the site for coronation of several Indian Kings of the Mosquito Coast.

10) The Blue Hole

The most famous dive site in Belize is The Blue Hole in the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, about fifty miles east of Belize City. The hole is a nearly perfect circle 1,000 feet wide and 412 feet deep that was formed when the roof of a cave fell in about 10,000 years ago. The Blue Hole is so large it is visible from outer space.

11) Caracol

Caracol is the largest-known Maya center in Belize. The largest pyramid in Caracol is 143 feet high and the tallest man-made structure in the entire country. The site is located in the Chiquibul Rainforest.

12) Xunantunich

This major ceremonial center has six large plazas and is surrounded by more than 25 temples and palaces. The most prominent structure located at the south end of the site is a pyramid 130 feet tall. “El Castillo” was the tallest man-made structure in Belize until the discovery of “Caana” at Caracol. “El Castillo” also is noteworthy for the reconstructed frieze on the temple. The site is more than two hours west of Belize City.

Tourist Attractions in Belize

Belize main attractions.

Belize is a gorgeous country in Central America with an astoundingly diverse landscape that includes tropical islands, UNESCO World Heritage coral reefs , misty mountains, thick jungle, primeval rainforests, majestic waterfalls, and dozens of ancient Maya ruins.

Below are 6 amazing tourists attractions you can enjoy in Belize:

Tourist Attractions in Belize

One of the country’s most iconic ancient Maya ruins, Altun Ha is located about 30 miles north of Belize City. The distinct architecture of the biggest pyramid in Altun Ha is featured on the logo of Belize’s biggest beer brand, Belikin Beer.

Crystal Cave

belize main tourist attractions

After a trek through the lush jungle of the Broad Loaf Forest, visitors enter the enormous Crystal Caves, voted as one of the top 10 crystal caves in the world. Inside, a dazzling array of stalactites and geological formations await visitors.

The Belize Zoo

belize main tourist attractions

More of an educational center than a traditional zoo, the Belize Zoo began life in the 1980s as a rescue center for abandoned and orphaned animals. Today, the Belize Zoo is home to more than 100 indigenous species, including jaguars, harpy eagles, crocodiles, and tapirs (Belize’s national animal). The Belize Zoo is the country’s first completely handicap-accessible facility of its kind and is located just west of Belize City.

Ambergris Caye

belize main tourist attractions

The largest island in Belize, Ambergris Caye (pronounced “amBURgis key”) is home to some of the country’s top seafood restaurants, beach resorts, and water sports. Popular activities include sea kayaking, windsurfing, and kite surfing as well as trips to the nearby Hol Chan Marine Reserve to enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving. The colorful capital of San Pedro is home to lively street parties and karaoke bars.

Caye Caulker

belize main tourist attractions

Long a mecca for backpackers and budget travelers, Caye Caulker is, in many ways, the mirror of Ambergris Caye. Located just offshore from Belize City, Caye Caulker is a gorgeous island ideal for beach barbecues, snorkeling, and drinking in the 360-degree view of the sparkling waters of the Caribbean.

Lamanai Mayan Site

The only ancient Maya site in Belize using its original name, Lamanai has been continuously occupied for more than 3,000 years. Putting up fierce resistance to the Spanish, the city of Lamanai is home to both ancient Maya temples and plazas as well as the remains of two burned-out Spanish churches.

All of the above attractions are located just a short distance from the Black Orchid Resort .

The Ultimate Belize 7 Day Itinerary: How To Spend A Perfect Week In Belize

' src=

Bordering Mexico and Guatemala is the second smallest country in Central America, Belize. Don’t be fooled by its size, this tiny country packs a serious punch. It’s diverse with lush jungles and Mayan ruins to the west and sunny Caribbean islands to the east.

With its close proximity to Mexico and the United States, and the fact that most Belizean’s are fluent in both English and Spanish, it’s one of the easiest Central American destinations to visit.

Below is my 7 day Belize itinerary which includes time on the islands and inland Belize. This very closely follows a trip I took in February with a few girlfriends.

Table of Contents

Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Our visit to Belize included time on the islands of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, plus the inland town of San Ignacio.

Day 1 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Travel day & san ignacio, belize .

San Ignacio is an excellent base for exploring inland Belize, therefore it’ll be our first stop during this Belize itinerary!

After the flight and drive into San Ignacio, it’ll probably be late in the day. We spent our evening eating, relaxing, and walking along the quiet Macal River.

Where To Stay In San Ignacio, Belize

Downtown San Ignacio has small hotels and guest houses catering to low and mid-budget travelers. Just outside of town there’s a variety of eco-friendly luxury resorts, we stayed at The Lodge at Chaa Creek .

Chaa Creek’s accommodations, amenities, and customer service set them far apart from your average resort. They offer a wide range of options from cottage-style rooms with airy, palm-thatched roofs to a stunning villa with private pool overlooking the jungle.

No matter which of the beautiful choices you select, you’ll have access to the property’s unmatched amenities.

Day 2 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

There’s nothing like waking up to the sound of rustling palms and howler monkey’s in San Ignacio. On our first full day in Belize we chose to explore our beautiful resort and the town of San Ignacio.

Canoe The Macal River

This gentle waterway was once an ancient highway and a vital part of the Maya Empire. The river linked urban centers, making it essential for trade, communication, and connection to ceremonial sites.

Today most traffic on the Macal is canoes paddled by visitors taking in Belize’s pristine forest and wildlife. Keep an eye out for green iguanas and the many colorful birds that call this area home.

After utilizing the resort’s free canoe rentals we spent about 2 hours on the river and never saw another person.

If your hotel doesn’t offer rentals, check out Tony’s Canoe Rental in town.

Explore The Town Of San Ignacio

San Ignacio’s center point is Burns Avenue, or The Strip. This main street is lined with colorful shops, markets, restaurants, and lively bars.

Enjoy beverages from a sidewalk cafe and soak in the sun while people watching. San Ignacio is a popular stopping point for backpackers, so you’ll have no trouble finding casual hangouts to kick back and relax.

While you’re in town definitely check out San Ignacio’s local markets. This region is made up of many groups of people, including Mayan and Creole. This creates excellent diversity in the marketplace goods.

Tip: Saturday and Tuesday are the best days to visit the market.

Enjoy Chaa Creek’s Extensive Amenities

In addition to canoeing the Macal and exploring town we joined an early morning birdwatch tour offered by The Lodge at Chaa Creek. Plus took a guided tour of the property’s Butterfly Farm, Natural History Center, and Maya Medicinal Plant Trail.

We then spent the afternoon swimming in the infinity pool.

Day 3 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Day 3 of our Belize 7 day itinerary was another full day in San Ignacio. This time we spent our day among ancient Mayan ruins and rushing waterfalls.

Caracol Natural Monument Reservation

Caracol, located near the boarder of Guatemala, is Belize’s largest Mayan archaeological site. The Mayan ruins here are 2,000 – 3,000 years old and were only discovered in the last 100 years.

Caracol houses 24 alters, two ball courts, reservoirs, causeways, 5 plazas, an astronomic observatory, and over 35,000 known buildings. This is  significantly  larger than the highly popular nearby site, Tikal.

The best part about Caracol? You can climb the ruins, something you can’t to do at more sought-after and heavily trafficked Mayan sites and there’s howler monkeys here!

Fun Fact: Caracol’s most prominent feature, Sky Palace, stands at 136 feet tall. Making this 2,000+ year old building the tallest in Belize to this day.

The ruins are very remote and surrounded by dense jungle, so visiting will require a full day trip from San Ignacio. I recommend hiring a tour guide, but it’s possible to see them on your own. We booked this tour through our resort, The Lodge at Chaa Creek, and couldn’t have been happier with our guide. I was blown away by his expertise of Caracol, Mayan history, and Belize in general.

This tour very closely follows our itinerary and is highly rated: Caracol Maya Ruins + Rio On Pools .

Big Rock Falls

Following our long morning at Caracol we quickly cooled off at Big Rock Falls.

Visiting the falls requires a short, but laborious climb down a winding wood staircase into the forest. From here you’ll arrive near the base of a stunning 150-foot waterfall. Big Rock stands tall with a small pool at its base, this pool eventually flows into a large body of water which is safe to swim in.

The falls attract both adrenaline-junkies seeking cliff-diving and relaxation lovers who prefer wading in the water and laying out on the rocks.

Since this gem is hidden deep within the Mountain Pine Reserve you’re likely to find few people here.

Additional Things To Do In San Ignacio, Belize:

Have extra time in San Ignacio and looking for more ideas? Lucky you! Consider the following:

  • Tour Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave (ATM Cave).
  • Relax at Rio on Pools.
  • Visit The Belize Botanical Gardens.
  • Go cave tubing or explore the extensive cave systems of Western Belize.
  • Visit popular Mayan archeological sites such as Xunantunich, Cahal, or Tikal.

Be sure to also check out The Best Things To Do In San Ignacio, Belize for more ideas.

Day 4 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Day 4 is a travel day, we’ll head from San Ignacio to the islands which make Belize so famous. The most popular island destinations are Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, we chose to visit Caye Caulker first.

Navigating between San Ignacio and the island requires stopping in Belize City for bit. If you’re up for it consider a trip to the Belize Zoo in the morning. This is the city’s most popular attraction.

Where To Stay In Caye Caulker, Belize

Considering how compact the island is there are a ton of hotels and hostels, most of which prioritize low and mid-budget travelers. We stayed at the Iguana Reef Inn . It’s one of the nicest hotels on the island and it did not disappoint. I especially loved their huge outdoor deck, it’s a great spot for catching the sunset.

Spend The Afternoon Relaxing In Caye Caulker

Upon arriving in Caye Caulker you’ll be greeted with swaying palm trees, dirt roads, and the sound of gentle waves. The motto here is “Go Slow” and it’s hard not to follow the locals on this one.

The island is very small so it’ll be easy to acquaint yourself on the first afternoon. Rent bikes and check out the town’s shops, restaurants, and bars. You’ll be amazed by how many spots offer incredible views of the stunning Caribbean coast.

Day 5 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Day 5 of our Belize 7 day itinerary is our first full day in Caye Caulker and will primarily be spent snorkeling.

Snorkel The Belize Barrier Reef

Caye Caulker is about 1.5 hours from Belize Barrier Reef by boat. The coral reef is 185 miles long and the 2nd largest in the world. The popular dive site is home to over 500 known species of fish and many yet undiscovered, you may even get lucky and spot a manatee or sea turtles!

This is a full day excursion and requires a guide. There are a number of reputable tour guides on the island, Ragga Sailing Adventures (formerly Raggamuffin Tours) – Hol Chan Marine Reserve Tour is one of the most popular options. You can book in person or online through Ragga Sailing Adventures .

In addition to snorkeling our tour included lots of information from our friendly guides, lunch, and rum punch on our way home. During this excursion we met a handful of fellow travelers and a few locals who ended up being our friends for the remainder of the trip.

Shop & Barhop Around Caye Caulker

Despite the island’s small size you’ll find a surprising variety of delicious foods, lively bars, and countless places to take an epic photo of the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Additionally, there’s plenty of beach shacks selling tourist goodies and island necessities.

Come nightfall enjoy the town’s casual bars for a night of cold beers and dancing. Check out Barrier Reef Sports Bar & Grill and I&I Reggae Bar. We had a great time dancing the night away with the new friends we made on the snorkeling tour.

Day 6 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

Day 6 is split between Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. We spent the first half of the day in Caye Caulker then headed to Ambergris Caye. It takes about 30 minutes to navigate between the two islands.

Note: San Pedro is Ambergris Caye’s only town, the two names are used interchangeably.

Relax at The Split In Caye Caulker

The Split is the place to be in Caye Caulker. It’s where the already tiny island was literally split in two in 1961 when Hurricane Hattie tore through.

Following the catastrophe locals realized the shallow waters were the perfect place for swimming and water sports, eventually turning it in to the island’s go-to tourist spot. This is one of the most relaxing spots on the Belize 7 day itinerary.

Grab a bucket of Belikin’s from The Lazy Lizard — the island’s most popular beach bar — and make yourself cozy on a wooden beach chair while reggae music plays in the background.

Additional Things To Do In Caye Caulker, Belize:

  • Dive The Blue Hole
  • Visit The Caye Caulker Forest Reserve

Be sure to also check out these Fun Things To Do In Caye Caulker for more ideas.

Enjoy Ambergris Caye’s Loud Music & Lively Bars

After making our way to Ambergris Caye from Caye Caulker it was late in the day so we decided to check out some of the overwater beach bars.

There are tons of spots to enjoy a tropical drink, loud music, even swimming and games! You’ll find Ambergris Caye loves to have a good time on the water.

Tip:  Many beach bars also offer water sports and inner tubes for floating.

Ambergris Caye’s Nightlife

Most watering holes have nightly events such as live music, bingo, and trivia, there’s even a hermit crab race and chicken drop game.

Wayo’s and Sandy Toes are some of the most loved beach bars. Crocs Sunset Sports Bar is a popular sports bar and Jaguar’s Temple Night Club is where you’ll find everyone come late night, it’s the island’s only bar open past midnight.

Day 7 – Belize 7 Day Itinerary

For our final full day in Belize we explored the town of San Pedro and visited Secret Beach.

Where To Stay In Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the country’s most popular destinations and therefore has a huge variety of accommodation options. Luxury resorts, guesthouses, hostels, whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find.

If you want to be within close proximity of bars and restaurants you’ll need to stay somewhere in San Pedro, the island’s only town. If a quieter experience sounds better consider resorts to the north.

We stayed at the  Hotel Del Rio . It’s on the northern side of San Pedro but within walking distance to many popular attractions. It was a great mid-range budget option, plus the staff and amenities were lovely.

There are so many lodging options in Ambergris Caye, for more ideas also check out my Where To Stay In Belize guide.

See Ambergris Caye By Golf Cart

Golf carts are the main source of transportation around Ambergris Caye! Ride around and check out the town’s many shops, restaurants, and bars, find your own quiet section of beach or simply enjoy the satisfaction that comes with driving a golf cart.

Golf carts cost about $50 – $75 USD a day depending on how long you rent.

For something less expensive consider exploring the island by bike, this will help avoid parking issues and cart traffic. Most hotels and resorts offer bike rentals or you can easily find a company around town.

Secret Beach

Don’t be fooled by the name, Secret Beach is far from that. It’s actually one of the most popular destinations on Ambergris Caye. The beach is located in a once quiet area on the island’s west side and has great sandy beaches and calm, clear water.

Here you’ll find a handful of bars and restaurants, loud music, and locals selling tourist necessities and renting out water toys. This is easily one of the nicest beaches in Ambergris Caye, it’s no wonder it’s so popular!

Secret Beach is a bit of a ways from San Pedro so you’ll need to hire a taxi or use your golf cart.

Additional Things To Do In Ambergris Caye, Belize:

  • Visit the Truck Stop, a shipping container food park with entertainment.
  • Stop by the Belize Chocolate Company.
  • Join a sunset cruise.
  • Snorkel the coral reefs of the Hol Chan Marine Reserve or scuba dive the Great Blue Hole.

For more ideas be sure to check out the Top Things To Do In Ambergris Caye .

Itinerary Note: From my experience, splitting time between Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker felt very rushed. I’d recommend choosing just one island and focusing your time there. Otherwise, cut San Ignacio and split time between the two islands.

Not sure which island to choose? This is why I preferred Caye Caulker over Ambergris Caye . When planning my trip I could not decide which island to visit, which is why we split time between both! So, if you’re indecisive like me and up for a lot of moving around, go for both!

Getting Around Belize

How to get to san ignacio from belize city.

Arriving from the United States we flew into Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport in Belize City. From there we drove to San Ignacio, Belize. Travel distance is 110 miles, which takes about 1.75 – 2.5 hours of driving.

There’s a few ways to get from Belize City to San Ignacio:

Take The Bus

This is the least expensive option and takes about 2.5 hours.

The price will vary. Driving directly to San Ignacio from the airport takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Use A Shuttle

Booking a private shuttle will cost about $100 – $150, split this between the number of people you’re traveling with. Since a private shuttle will be a direct trip it’s about a 1 hour and 45 minute drive, this is the option we went with.

Our hotel had shuttle services which could be arranged in advance, it was painless and very convenient.

Booking a public shuttle costs about $20 – $35/ person. Expect the shuttle to take 2 – 2.5 hours depending on total stops required.

Belize City To Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye

In order to get from San Ignacio to the islands a stopover in Belize City is required.

Fly To Caye Caulker Or Ambergris Caye

If flying from Belize City to Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye you’ll use Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. The flight is only a few minutes on a small seaplane. Cost varies but is around $150 – 200 each way.

Take A Boat To Caye Caulker Or Ambergris Caye

If you’d rather not fly, plan to arrive on boat through Ocean Ferry Belize or the Belize Water Taxi. The one way fee is roughly $25/ person by boat and the trip is about 45 minutes to Caye Caulker and 1 hour and 30 minutes to Ambergris Caye.

Navigating between Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye? You’ll also utilize the above options or plan to hire a boat.

When To Visit Belize

Winter through early spring is the best time to visit Belize, this is their dry season and temperatures are warm but not stifling.

Late spring through fall is the warmest time of year. The sun here can be very intense making it feel warmer than the thermometer indicates. Inland will be even warmer than the islands.

If visiting summer or fall, the rainy season, expect an average of 10 – 15 days of rain per month plus high humidity. Fall is hurricane season.

Of course weather will vary throughout the country, but below are average temperatures to provide a general idea:

  • January – 83° / 68° (High/ Low F°)
  • February – 84° / 70°
  • March – 86° / 72°
  • April – 88° / 75°
  • May – 89° / 77°
  • June – 89° / 78°
  • July – 89° / 77°
  • August – 89° / 77°

What To Pack For Your Belize Vacation

Belize is a laid-back country where simplicity and practicality win out over more exciting fashion choices. It’s quite hot here, especially in summer. Look for light, breathable clothes made of either linen, cotton, or rayon.

Also remember, excursions require specific gear, especially cave tours and snorkeling.

Check out What To Wear In Belize for lots more information on what to bring. This guide includes my exact packing list for this 7 day trip to Belize.

13 Top-Rated Things to Do in San Pedro, Belize

Written by Lavanya Sunkara and Joni Sweet Updated May 26, 2022

The town of San Pedro, gracing the southern end of the largest island in Belize – the 25-mile-long Ambergris Caye – buzzes with action, with many adventurous and cultural things to do. The minute you step off that small plane from mainland cities, you will be whisked to your resort on a golf cart. The narrow streets of the only town on the island pulsate with locals in golf carts (the city's main mode of transportation) running errands and meeting friends. Travelers in rental carts join the parade in search of seafood restaurants and Caribbean beach pursuits.

There's a good reason San Pedro attracts so many travelers. From diving tours to the Great Blue Hole and snorkeling with nurse sharks at Hol Chan Marine Reserve to sunset sailings and day trips to islands like Caye Caulker and Half Moon Caye , San Pedro has many attractions that make it a great launching pad for an incredible eco-friendly adventure. You can spend your day relaxing on a hammock or choose from a number of water activities, from parasailing to kayaking.

During the high season, from November to April, the weather is pleasant, with mild-temperatures and cool breezes. The town boasts top-notch beachside lodgings. Hotels and resorts offer guests wonderful accommodations and access to activities like diving, snorkeling, fishing, and sailing. Ambergris Caye is located less than 40 miles from Belize City and can be reached by air and sea. The flight from Belize City takes just 15 minutes. A water taxi from Belize City takes about 90 minutes.

Plan your trip to Ambergris Caye with our list of the top things to do in San Pedro, Belize.

1. Snorkel Hol Chan Marine Reserve

2. swim with sharks at shark ray alley, 3. dive the great blue hole, 4. sail to caye caulker, 5. ride the streets on a golf cart, 6. dine at the truck stop, 7. discover bacalar chico national park, 8. tour the belize chocolate company, 9. rendezvous at the secret beach, 10. bring the kids to boca del rio park, 11. marco gonzalez archaeological reserve, 12. go gallery hopping, 13. experience local culture, map of things to do in san pedro, belize.

Turtle in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve, located four miles from San Pedro, gets its name from a coral-filled little gap in the protective reef near Ambergris Caye, and makes it a popular snorkeling and dive destination. The reserve, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System , can be reached only by boat. Thanks to the efforts made by the Belize government to protect the reef system, it was taken off the UNESCO endangered site list in 2018.

You can embark on a day tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve right from your resort in San Pedro. Marvel at the vibrant coral-lined walls of the channel and the cornucopia of marine life that inhabit these clear waters at depths of no more than six to nine meters. See sea turtles, southern rays, several species of fish, and even a few sharks. Even if you have never snorkeled before, you can still experience the underwater world with help from a knowledgeable guide.

Nurse sharks at Shark Ray Alley

Shark Ray Alley in Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of Belize's top attractions , and rightfully so. It provides a unique opportunity to swim with nurse sharks and stingrays that swarm the area upon hearing approaching boats.

Nurse sharks are fairly harmless to humans and use their small mouths to suck in small fish, shrimp, and squid. These medium-sized, bottom-feeding sharks approach the boats for food, as guides generally throw fish for them to consume. Often, you'll find stingrays joining the frenzy, hence the name of the destination. When you are in the water, it's best to observe these amazing creatures from a safe distance.

Aerial view of the Great Blue Hole

Jacques Cousteau once called the Great Blue Hole one of the best diving sites in the world, and it remains true still. Part of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll , accessible by boat, this giant submarine sinkhole provides experienced divers unparalleled views of a collapsed cave's massive stalagmites and stalactites and the creatures that inhabit it. Expect to find at least a few species of sharks here, from hammerheads to bull sharks.

The sinkhole is roughly 125 meters deep and 300 meters across. From above, you can see the dark blue water encircled by turquoise shallow waters. You can arrange for a dive tour from your resort or a dive shop right in San Pedro. Some dive shops even offer night dives.

Visit towards the end of the dry season, between April and May, for favorable weather conditions. Combine a trip to the Great Blue Hole with a tour of Half Moon Caye . Located in the southwest corner of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, this World Heritage Site offers up close sightings of colonies of frigate birds and red-footed booby birds from an elevated observation platform.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker, located a ferry ride away from San Pedro, is a much more laid-back alternative, full of seaside eateries, boutique stores, gorgeous beaches , and plenty of fun at the Split.

If you've got a big group, consider chartering a catamaran boat from an operator like SEAduced by Belize for a day full of underwater activities at Hol Chan Marine Reserve and a stopover for lunch in Caye Caulker. Equipped with comfortable bean bags, overwater nets, restrooms, and plenty of food and drink, the boat will take you on a journey to the area's main attractions.

The Split, which came to be when Hurricane Hattie divided the island into two in 1961, is now a happening place to visit with music, lounging tourists, and water-lovers taking advantage of the calm waters.

If you are staying overnight, Caye Caulker has several budget-friendly accommodations and also offers snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, and other water activities. The Caye Caulker Marine Reserve , running parallel to the island, is rich with sea life (including manatees) and colorful coral reefs worth exploring on a snorkeling tour.

Golf carts parked in San Pedro

At first you may find it a bit jarring to see everyone on golf carts whizzing past you. But the narrow streets and laid-back attitude perfectly explains the mode of transportation in San Pedro. It becomes exciting taking in the vibrant town from an open-air vehicle, as you make your way to various shops and restaurants.

You can rent a cart from your hotel or from a cart rental in town with a valid driver's license for the duration of your stay. Ride the cart to the northern part of Ambergris Caye for the Secret Beach and other attractions. Keep in mind that when riding a golf cart, the same driving rules apply.

The Truck Stop in San Pedro

The Truck Stop is San Pedro's de facto entertainment hub, offering everything from delicious food to live entertainment, in a shipping-container park. Get New Haven-style pizza and Asian and Latin food, all made from local ingredients, and cool off with some ice-cream.

Owned by expats, this entertaining park has a 5.4-meter movie screen with stadium seating, a swimming pool, a large stage for bands, outdoor games, and themed events daily. Any given day, chances are you'll find a farmers market, movie night, a cornhole tournament, trivia games, or live music. You can even choose to have your wedding or a special event at the pavilion.

Ocelot in Belize

Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve , a UNESCO World Heritage Site spanning 106 square kilometers of land and sea, is situated on the northern part of Ambergris Caye overlooking Mexico and the Bay of Chetumal. The protected site also encompasses the Chac Balam Mayan ruins. The area is accessible by an hour-long boat ride from San Pedro.

Once here, take advantage of the 11 miles of nature trails. Although rare, you may find sightings of ocelots, pumas, and jaguars. Snorkeling in the marine reserve will bring you up close to colorful corals, fish, turtles, and manatees.

The small museum at the San Juan Ranger station, located among the ruins of Chac Balam, showcases Mayan artifacts. Take a boat ride through a channel created by the Mayans separating Ambergris Caye from mainland Mexico for trading purposes. SEAduced by Belize and Searious Adventures are among the two main tour operators in San Pedro offering tours to Bacalar Chico.

Did you know that the Mayans enjoyed a chocolate beverage daily? Thousands of years ago, Mayans would grind cacao beans with corn and spices and create a concoction that they drank daily for sustenance. While the drink is not the same as the hot chocolate we enjoy today, we have the Mayans to thank for using cacao beans.

Belize claims to be the source of some of the best chocolate in the world, and you can be the judge of that on a tour of the Belize Chocolate Company in San Pedro. The company uses beans produced by small farmers in Southern Belize; the Toledo District there is one of the largest producers of chocolate in the country. You can take a chocolate-making class to learn about the bean-to-bar process, and have delicious tastings (the chocolate-covered caramel is a fan favorite).

Secret Beach

The Secret Beach seems to no longer be a secret, as you'll find many beach goers enjoying its turquoise waters and lounging on the soft sand. Located seven miles north of San Pedro on the western side of Ambergris Caye, Secret Beach has miles of clear waters, free of seaweed, and a peaceful vibe.

The easiest way to get to the Secret Beach is by golf cart, although you can get there by Jet Ski or a boat. If you are driving, keep in mind that it will take about 45 minutes each way, and the road gets a bit bumpy as you start heading west.

Go early to enjoy a lazy day on the beach overlooking mangrove islands in the distance, swimming in the warm waters, and refueling with delicious local food from beachside restaurants. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available on-site.

If you are traveling with kids, the beach area of Boca del Rio Park, which has recently undergone a remodel, is the place to visit. Located in northeastern San Pedro, the playground has a jungle gym, swings, and waterslides that kids can ride into the shallow part of the bay. The park also features a basketball court, volleyball court, BBQ grills, and picnic tables. Food vendors are on-site if you didn't bring your own snacks.

Located at the tip of Ambergris Caye, Marco Gonzalez Archaeological Reserve is surrounded by dense jungle and red and black mangroves. It was only officially discovered archaeologically in 1984, although locals knew about it long before that. The place received reserve status in 2011 and was believed to have been used by the Mayans as a trading post to move goods all the way through Central America. The area consists of at least 49 known structures.

The pottery found strewn around the site is made of clay and quartz, which aren't found on the island, indicating that the Mayans brought them from overseas.

Carvings for sale in Belize

Belizean culture brims with creativity, and the many galleries scattered throughout San Pedro can get you up close to local works. One of the best places to visit is Belizean Arts , a gallery that's been showcasing pieces by leading artists for more than 30 years. Tucked inside Fido's Courtyard , the gallery features a range of visual art and colorful objects that you can take home. It's a great spot to pick up one-of-a-kind souvenirs, or simply find some artistic inspiration on your vacation.

For another great art spot, head to The Gallery of San Pedro inside Georgie's Crust & Crumbs Pie Shop. It's reputed to have the largest selection of local art in the country, with more than 2,500 paintings, along with hundreds of masks and carvings. You can also shop for handmade hammocks and blankets.

San Pedro's Black & White Cultural Entertainment Center is the go-to spot in Belize to celebrate the culture of ethnic groups found throughout the country, including the Garifuna, Mestizo, Creole, Maya, Kekchi, and more. Live drumming recitals are especially popular at this attraction, which hosts a diverse range of regular events. You can also taste diverse cuisines at its buffet and attend a full-blown cultural presentation upon request.
